Roos Primary School pupil wins competition to send her card to the Queen ROOS Primary School pupil Rosie Jackson, 11, has won a competition ran by the East Riding Lieutenancy to send a card on behalf of the region to the Queen for the Platinum Jubilee.

Rosie was surprised with the announcement her design had been chosen at school on Friday, May 27. She was presented with her picture in a frame by HM Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire Mr Jim Dick OBE. Rosie’s picture will now be sent to the Queen

on a card to congratulate her.

There were two age categories in the competition and 50 schools in East Yorkshire entered. Rosie won the category for school years four to six. Rosie’s design includes the Union Flag in the background with a Queen silhouette containing rolling fields.

Pupils at the school all designed a card and each school could send one to be part of the competition which Roos Primary School chose to

be Rosie’s.

Talking about the Queen receiving a card designed by her Rosie commented: “I’m really excited it was a complete surprise.”

Withernsea has received a Seaside Award KEEP Britain Tidy have announced the winners of the prestigious Blue Flag and Seaside Awards for 2022 with Withernsea being one of the seaside destinations to receive a Seaside Award.

Withernsea Credit Union receives Big Local funding to secure its future THE FUTURE of Withernsea Credit Union has been secured for at least the next two years thanks to a funding boost from Withernsea Big Local. A spokesperson for The Big Local said: “After having worked very successfully with HEY Credit Union over the past three years of their funding from us we are very happy to announce that we have just funded another two years for

their continued presence here in Withernsea.

“Before our funding HEY Credit Union did have a small presence in Withernsea with a few hours a week staffed by volunteers. We were able to fund a development officer for three years, giving the residents of Withernsea and surrounding area access to the HEYCU on three days of the week in a fully staffed office. The

plan was that HEYCU would be fully selffinanced at the end of that time.

“Due to Covid things had stalled a bit, but due to the tenacity of the Development Officer Matt Lloyd it never came to a standstill. The next two years will give HEYCU a chance of reaching their goal of being selffinanced and making them a permanent presence in Withernsea.”

Cup final win for Withernsea High School THERE WERE celebrations all round for Withernsea High School’s Year 10 football team as they ended a successful season with a cup final win. The team recently travelled to Glanford Park, home of Scunthorpe United, to take on the town’s St Lawrence Academy in the Humberside Small Schools Cup Final and winning the game 5-4.

Cheering the team on to victory were a number of staff and over 30 away day supporters from Years 7, 8 and 10 who had travelled to show their support.

Among the staff who attended the game was Headteacher Mark Crofts who commented: “This was a fantastic achievement for the team and for the school. The boys have played together since Year 7, and this showed in a fantastic team performance at Glanford Park. They played with confidence and were composed under pressure. Their victory, against tough opposition, was deserved and went a long way to making up for opportunities lost during the pandemic.

Staff and students will be proud of their achievements on the pitch and for how they acted as ambassadors for our school. It was a delight to have travelling supporters who made for a great atmosphere at the game and represented the school well. Well done to the team and many thanks to our PE staff who have coached and supported the team to this level.”

Commenting on the experience from a players’ perspective, Year 10 student Daniel Buttle said: “The stadium was fantastic and it was an amazing feeling to get the chance to play at a proper football ground.” While fellow Year 10 student Thomas Pindar, one of the game’s goal scorers, added: “It was a great feeling to score at the ground. The crowd were on fire and helped keep us going during the game.”

Transport on the day came courtesy of Wren Kitchens and one of their ‘Wren Flyer’ coaches. Primarily used by the company for staff transfers, these coaches are also occasionally offered for complimentary use to local schools.

Withernsea High School are grateful to Wren for their support which enabled not only the team, but also many of their supporters to experience a great occasion.

TRACTOR RUN FOR MARIE CURIE

SUNDAY, May 1 saw a charity tractor run across Holderness in aid of Marie Curie. The tractor run started from JM Conner & Son at England Hill Farm on the outskirts of Withernsea. A total of 38 tractors took to the roads running via Rimswell, Tunstall, Roos, Halsham, Winestead before heading back to the farm.

With bacon and sausage sandwiches to get the drivers moving in the morning and a fabulous buffet lunch once they returned to the farm the event was well supported by participants and spectators alike. The local Fire Brigade also arrived at the farm to show their support across lunchtime.

Great credit should go to the organising committee of Graham Conner, Kerr Conner, Angela Conner, Harry Conner, Glen Smith, Helen Smith and Kathryn Townsley for putting together the event. The day was arranged in memory of Kathryn and Helen’s father David Townsley and the team were delighted to raise a total of £1675 for a great cause in Marie Curie.

The organisers said “We would like to thank everyone who made the event a great success and look forward to bringing back a bigger and better run next year on Sunday April 30, 2023”

The Survivor visits Withernsea AS PART of The Odyssey a giant puppet known as The Survivor visited Withernsea on Friday, April 29.

Yorkshire Coast BID partnered with renowned Scarborough theatre company Animated Objects, to deliver this next instalment of ‘The Odyssey – An Epic Adventure on the Yorkshire Coast’ The Survivor was pulled from the sea in the morning. In the afternoon she walked along the beach standing at a towering five meters tall. The walk brought to life the story of a survivor of conflict in the Trojan Wars. She starts her journey washed up on a shore unfamiliar to her. She is lost; frightened and alone. She is welcomed with artworks, music, and spoken word. After the walk ‘The Survivor’ was presented with a blanket made up of squares hand made by crafters up and down the Yorkshire Coast including many from Withernsea.

Withernsea's new Mayor AT THE 2022 Annual Town Council meeting Councillor Jacqui Blackburn stepped up to become Mayor of Withernsea Town Council for the coming year.

At the meeting on Monday, May 9 the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Felicity Walmsley, formally handed over the Mayoral chains to Councillor Blackburn, the former Deputy Mayor, and wished her well for what may be another challenging year for the town.

Councillor Walmsley, navigated the postpandemic year in office with conviction and panache. The year began with a depleted Council, but with a firm hand on the reins, skillfully guided council business representing the town on many committees and promoted Withernsea at civic events.

Councillor Walmsley commented: "My Mayoral year was busy and productive but well worth the energy and commitment to represent Withernsea. The year had its ups and downs; with new friends and old who supported me and the work of the Town Council during the year."

Councillr Blackburn’s first duty as the new Mayor was to welcome her newly elected Deputy Mayor, Councillor Lyn Healing. Councillor Blackburn then spoke briefly about her hopes for the coming year and named two Mayoral charities, the RNLI and Withernsea Lighthouse.

"I will be proud to continue serving Withernsea's townspeople as I have done this past year as Deputy Mayor. Being Mayor of Withernsea is about being available to all, to serve my community, quietly, effectively, and to the best of my ability." Said the Mayor, Councillor Jacqui Blackburn.

Councillor Lyn Healing said “I would like to say thank you to all the councillors that voted for me to become Deputy Mayor and congratulations to Jacqui Blackburn on becoming Mayor and I look forward to us both working together on issues that are of importance to our residents and businesses.”

What a Wonderful Expo!

By Withernsea Town Council WITHERNSEA Town Council would like to thank everyone who attended the second Hobby Expo at the Meridian Centre on Saturday, May 14.

Our local groups and organisations did the town proud, and the event saw approximately 400 people come through the doors. It was beautiful to see those who attended the first Hobby Expo return and to see new faces.

The Town Council hopes that this event will become a regular showcase, demonstrating just how much is offered here in Withernsea. Many took the opportunity to visit the Expo, with the town attracting visitors from as far as Manchester, Barnsley and Durham.

The Mayor’s Charities for the forthcoming year, Royal British Legion and Withernsea Lighthouse, benefited from the first fundraising activity of the year, reaping £37.50 from cake sales on the day.

Children’s entertainment confirmed for Withernsea’s Acoustic & Chill event thanks to grant funding THE WITHSTOCK Working Group in Withernsea has been successful in securing a £500 Withernsea Big Local Community Grant. The grant is for children’s entertainment for the Acoustic & Chill event on August 13 in Valley Gardens. Jayne Moxon,

spokesperson for the group said: “we are delighted to have the support from Withernsea Big Local to help us grow this event. We always aim to have something for everyone and we felt that there was perhaps something missing for the

children. This grant has enabled us to book the Aba Daba circus skills workshop which will keep our young guests happy whilst their parents enjoy the music and refreshments close by. The Acoustic & Chill event was included as part of the larger

Local scouting district get together for the first time since the pandemic THE SOUTH Holderness Scouting District have enjoyed their first get together in over two years.

Pre Covid the district got together around two to three times a year to do activities and socialise as a larger group. This was curtailed due to the pandemic and in May they held a Jamboree on the Trail (JOTT) which is an annual day for the World Scout Movement to walk together. The South Holderness District walked seven miles starting at the P&O terminal in Hull and finishing at the stage area near The Deep for dinner, games and singing and they also invested a couple of Explorers.

The JOTT included over 100 from the district Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers ranging from age six to 18 and with adult helpers. Within the district there are groups from Withernsea, Patrington, Burstwick, Keyingham and Hedon.

Paul Whittaker, Assistant District Commissioner, commented: “You could tell by the kids faces they enjoyed it. We were blessed with a hot sunny day too. The Adults enjoyed catching up with each other in real life and the kids enjoyed meeting with the other sections too.”

The scout groups will also be involved in the Jubilee weekend activities including attending the beacon lighting.

Armed Forces Breakfast Club outing to Bomber Command WITHERNSEA Armed Forces Breakfast Club had an outing to the International Bomber Command Centre and memorial at Lincoln on May 22. A total of 31 of the members attended. The club are now planning more events in the future including a Jubilee lunch and Christmas hampers. The club has now been running over a year and Darren England from the club commented: “I am amazed how it has taken off. I only expected about six attending but we are regularly getting 40.” You can read more about the last month at the club over the page on page 8.

GRAHAM STUART MP HONOURED TO MOVE THE HUMBLE ADDRESS BEVERLEY and Holderness MP, Graham Stuart, was honoured to move the Humble Address to Parliament on Tuesday, May 10 to mark the beginning of the new Parliamentary session.

The State Opening of Parliament took place on Tuesday, May 10 to mark the

formal start of the new Parliamentary session, which gave the government the opportunity to outline its legislative agenda for the 2022-23 session through the reading of the Queen’s Speech.

Following the Speech, it is customary for there to be several days of debates to

discuss its contents in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. This starts with a speech which is delivered by an experienced backbench MP, known as moving the Humble Address, and this year Mr Stuart had the honour of being chosen to do this.

The Queen’s Speech unveiled a substantial legislative agenda

focusing on four key areas in particular: boosting economic growth and helping with the cost of living, making our streets safer, funding the NHS and tackling the backlog, and providing leadership in troubled times. Mr Stuart was particularly supportive of the Energy Bill, which will give the Humber the opportunity to be a global leader in the development of hydrogen and CCUS as part of the UK’s mission to achieve net zero and improve its energy security.

Following the Queen’s Speech, Mr Stuart moved the Humble Address in which he expressed his support for the government’s

legislative agenda and gave advice to recently elected MPs and those considering a career in politics, including “never stop campaigning for what you believe in… and enjoy and value every department you work in, rather than seeing it as a stepping stone to the next thing…” He also spoke about his campaign to keep community hospitals in Beverley and Holderness open when he was first elected as the MP for the constituency, and the continued importance of supporting the people of Ukraine.

After moving the Humble Address, Mr Stuart said: “It was a great honour for my constituents and I to move the Humble Address at the start of this new Parliamentary session. The Government has unveiled an ambitious list of priorities for the months ahead and I look forward to scrutinising it and supporting it as these Bills go through Parliament.”

Advice Column I love live music and now that restrictions have lifted, I’m keen to start going to events again. I’ve booked tickets for some gigs over the next few months, but I’m still a little worried. I can’t quite believe things are fully back to normal.

What will happen if restrictions come back in?

It’s understandable to be feeling apprehensive when there’s been so much change, and knowing your rights will help you deal with anything unexpected. If you’ve got tickets to an event which goes ahead, but you change your mind about going or realise you’re no longer able to go, you have no legal right to a refund. However, if the event is cancelled, your right to a refund will depend on how you bought the ticket.

If you booked through an official seller and the organiser cancels, moves, reschedules, or makes the event behind closed doors, you should get a refund. This is true even if it’s cancelled due to a government ban on large events. If this happens, contact the official seller to find out how you can get a refund. If you bought your ticket from a ticket-reselling website, your refund will depend on the site's terms and conditions.

If you’re worried about the event being cancelled, it’s a good idea to look at the terms and conditions before booking. If you bought from a private seller, unfortunately it’s unlikely you’ll be able to recover your money, even if the event is cancelled or rescheduled. We recommend contacting the

seller to see what they can do.

Ahead of any events you’ve booked, keep checking the information from the official seller or organiser to make sure you know straight away about any updates, like changes to the date or cancellations.

Another thing to be aware of is that scammers exploit these situations for their own benefit. If your event is cancelled and anyone - whether it’s a person or a company - offers their services to try to recover money on your behalf, be suspicious. Make sure that you're aware of the signs of a potential scam and always be on the lookout. Cost effective recipes of the month

By Councillor Lyn Healing Another month has passed and the warmer weather is just around the corner and if you are like me you don’t want to be stuck in a hot stuffy kitchen for hours preparing a meal, so this month I have decided to add a couple of very quick meals which I hope you enjoy. The added bonus is the recipes won’t break the bank either.

SPEEDY CHICKEN STIR-FRY serves 4

CHILLI BEEF AND SPINACH serves 4

500g chicken thighs, remove skin and slice thinly into long thin strips.

1 tbls oil 3 sticks celery, sliced diagonally 2 small carrots, sliced diagonally 1 small red pepper, sliced diagonally 250g broccoli, broken down into small florets 1/3 cup of unsalted cashew or peanutsOptional 1 pkt or ½ bottle stir-fry sweet and sour sauce Heat oil in a wok or heavy based pan, add chicken and stir fry over high heat for approximately two minutes. Add celery, carrots, pepper, broccoli and nuts and stir fry for around 3 minutes. Stir in sauce and stir fry until everything is coated and hot.

Remove from heat and serve with rice or noodles.

WITHERNSEA TOWN COUNCIL NEWS Withernsea Elects New Mayor The new Withernsea Town Mayor is Cllr Jacqui Blackburn, last year’s Deputy Mayor. Her Consort will be her husband Cllr Ian Blackburn. Withernsea Town Council voted for Cllr Lyn Healing to become Deputy Mayor, alongside her duties as an ERYC Councillor. They will work hard together to promote Withernsea.

Taking on the position of Mayor or Deputy Mayor is an act of service to the town. It means putting aside personal life to represent Withernsea at various events, both local and throughout East Riding, and representing Withernsea Town Council by attending A LOT of meetings. It can be fun, but also tiring BUT it is also an honour to be chosen to fulfil the role and work hard to engage and support the community of Withernsea and find out what other towns and councillors do, and even borrow their ideas to fit in with Withernsea.

In her acceptance speech the new Mayor Cllr.

Jacqui Blackburn, a wheelchair user herself, stated: “I have aims and ambitions to make this town more disabled friendly than it already is, working with others, as I have already started to do, will try to achieve at least some progress in the coming year.” She also stated: “I hope to hold a ‘Meet the Mayor’ session outside the Meridian Centre soon. I will be available, not only to answer, or try to answer, any questions Withernsea people may have, but perhaps ask a few of my own too.”

The Mayor said she will serve Withernsea, quietly, effectively and to the best of her ability. Her charities are to be the local RNLI and the Withernsea Lighthouse.

Town Award 2022 The 2022 Town Award and certificate was presented to John Patchett the ‘Carnival Man’ of Withernsea at the Annual Parish Meeting at the Meridian Centre on Monday 23rd May 2022.

As one of the people who nominated John Patchett stated “He is a quiet, unassuming man who has a dry wit…and doesn’t trumpet what he has achieved.” Another nominee mentioned his carbon footprint within the town, “Regardless of how much shopping, luggage and carnival flags he has on him, he still gets on his familiar pushbike to go about his business.”

He is a gentle gentleman fully deserving of the Town Award for not only his 25 years of working to make the Withernsea Carnival a success, but all the other things that he is involved in for the good of the people of Withernsea and surrounding areas. In this Jubilee Year it’s not surprising to learn that John Patchett has quietly, but efficiently worked with his fantastic team to help Withernsea Town Council achieve a good Jubilee weekend. It is amazing that he’s never been presented with the Town Award before.

Council Surgeries We held a Council Surgery on the last Saturday of April, as we do every last Saturday of the month, 12pm to 2pm, to meet the councillors for a casual chat. We sit outside The Meridian, and people stop and talk to us about all sorts of things from life in general to the fountains and the on-off situation we have with them, the lack of Drs appointments and many other things.

We started having the meetings monthly so that anyone with problems about fuel, food and the cost of living or all of the above can just talk to us, we are not qualified to help but we know people who can and can point them towards those people.

We also get many, many people complaining about the Doctors, not just on Saturdays but every day and it’s getting worse. We are working with the Drs and management team to try and get it sorted but lack of staff and money doesn’t help.

So, if you are passing on the last Saturday of the month and fancy a chat we’re very friendly and don’t bite.

The vulnerability of landline communications to nuclear attack was recognised, and action was taken to extend the radio network was unfinished at the time of stand-down in 1992. Royal Observer Corps Royal Review 1991 The Royal Review of the Royal Observer Corps 25th July 1991 at RAF Bentley Priory resulted in the ROC being stood down on 30th September 1991 following a long history of service to the nation. Two thousand members of the Corps attended the Review, when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II presented the Corps' new colours. Bear in mind the context of history at the time, as the “Cold War” was deemed to have ended with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and the resultant agreement on reduction of nuclear-weapon stockpiles and numbers. Also to be remembered is that in the event of a threat of nuclear attack, members of the Royal Observer Corps would leave their homes to man their stations, monitoring the blast, fallout and effect

of nuclear warheads impacting in their area. They would be inside their posts for quite a while, possibly up to three or four weeks. Just imagine what they may have had to resurface to. A sobering thought. It would be interesting to hear from any local surviving members of the Royal Observer Corps.

These occasionally come up for sale, most are on private land, and many of the remainder have been infilled. The Tunstall post was still stocked with maps, battery boxes and equipment after stand-down, till vandals broke in and smashed almost everything.

Property conversion paused as owners open doors to Puffins Galore!

WORK on converting a former radio studio into high-end office space and apartments has been placed on hold after the arrival in the building of a colony of puffins.

The birds may be fibre glass rather than flesh and feathers, but they appealed to Rachel and James Murray’s passion for culture and have brought work to a standstill at their site, The Boathouse offices, next to Hull marina.

The 42 puffin sculptures, which stand 1.5 metres high, have been brought in from manufacturers in Poland to play a starring role in the Puffins Galore! animal trail.

They are now being decorated by professional artists who responded to the brief of telling a story of the East Coast, its local wildlife, green energy and climate change.

The painted puffins will be unveiled on Saturday, July 2 at a series of coastal sites throughout East Yorkshire stretching from Flamborough

down to Kilnsea, as well as some inland locations including Hull, Beverley, Cottingham and Patrington.

Rachel and James, who have owned the dockside property for more than 20 years, will then resume their renovation work, buoyed by the interest generated in the site by the puffins.

James, an architect, said: “I come from a creative industry and I think art and culture is very important so we were happy to pause our project to accommodate the puffins.

“We remember the Larkin toads and the moths which were created for the Amy Johnson Festival and we have also seen other animal sculpture trails around the country.”

Rachel added: “We are helping to redevelop the marina by renovating the building to create high-quality office and residential space and we wanted to take the opportunity to also support the cultural side of the city and help to

promote Hull as a destination.

“I think it’s amazing. You could not have a better creature in this location at the side of Railway Dock. Everybody wants to see leisure projects taking shape – they like to do something creative and they love events.”

Puffins Galore! was launched with funding from Yorkshire Coast BID and East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of their drive to boost tourism and increase visitor numbers.

That investment has already enabled the organisers to secure additional sponsorship from more than 40 businesses across the region including the Bonus Group, Cranswick, The Deep, Designs Signage, HETA, KCOM, Sewell on the go, the University of Hull, Wykeland and Strata Holdings, who will deliver the puffins to their new homes.

Clare Huby, a director of Puffins Galore Ltd, said: “The sculptures were due for delivery in March but they are made at a factory in Poland and a lot of

the work had to stop because some of the workers are from Ukraine or have family there.

“Our first concern was for the safety of the people. All we could do was be patient and wait until their colleagues could catch up with the work. Our artists and sponsors have been very understanding and sympathetic and we are grateful for that.

“We’re now at the point where I am really looking forward to seeing the puffins in their new homes. Having previously delivered Larkin with Toads and A Moth for Amy we know it will be challenging and

tiring but we have a great team working on it.

“The best bit is once everything is out there… just wandering round, watching people and seeing their reaction. I remember with toads when I was having a bad day in the office and feeling like I was banging my head against a brick wall it was great to just go out and see the crowds of people enjoying the trail.”

Puffins Galore! will run for six months after which all the sculptures will be sold, either to their sponsors or at a grand charity auction. The proceeds will be donated to four charities

selected for their important role in the protection of the wildlife of the seas and coasts or for their essential work saving lives at sea.

The charities are the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, RNLI, RSPB and Hornsea Inshore Rescue.

By Josie Briggs RECENTLY some of our group started planting edibles in the raised bed at the Hut. So far we have tomatoes, onions and rhubarb. During our first session some very keen children came to see what we were doing, and they soon joined in with planting

and watering. It would be great to see them again, and other interested children perhaps with their families. We’re there most Tuesdays, 4pm - 5pm during term time (unless it's raining).

We held a stall at the recent Hobbies Expo in the Meridian

Centre, giving away free plants and seeds. Some children enjoyed sowing vegetable seeds in little pots to take away with them. We had a great time chatting to people interested to know more about our group.

AT THE beginning of May it was all go to repair the shed on the new plot.

Colin worked very hard rebuilding most of it and putting in new windows. Then we creosoted most of it, but a small part was still to do, which I did the following Saturday. This was keeping me from worrying about Colin, as he was in hospital having an operation to repair carpal tunnel and elbow impingement . He had to be careful with it for four weeks.(fat chance of that). He has made a brilliant job of the shed, its really smart now.

Colin had shown me how to use the rotovator before his op, and I got the big plot done and ready for planting, and I could get on with that while Colin was taking it easy. So I have put in more peas next to the broad bean plants, then I planted out half a row of dwarf bean plants and finished the row

with dwarf bean seeds. The first peas have had netting for them to climb up, held in place with posts for support, which my grandson, Kian, helped with one Weekend . He also planted out lettuce and drilled holes in the bottom of buckets ready for more plants.

My early tomatoes got hit by the April frosts, so I lost my Gardeners Delight, one of my favourites, so I have had to sow some more seed, they are coming along nicely, almost catching up with the others.

This month has been a very busy time with lots of plants being planted out or potted on into bigger pots. Also weeding, feeding and watering plants and seedlings with it being so dry and warm. The cucumbers and gherkins are shooting up and now have tiny fruits, they are all planted up in the poly tunnel, we have just had two gherkins

with our salad for dinner.

After planting the seed and pricking out the seedlings and nurturing them on, it's now time to plant the tomatoes out into the greenhouse in buckets that I sink into the ground, I then support them with a bamboo cane and a string that is suspended from a straining wire attached to the greenhouse roof and then tied around the rim of the bucket.

I hope that I have left enough space for the Gardeners Delight.

It's nice to see the plants on the plots doing well, sweet corn, pumpkins, beetroot, squash, peas, beans etc. It's good to know that all of the hard work is starting to pay off. And at last we have had some rain. It's also nice to see all of the regular plot holders busy with planting and weeding, and there are a few new people on site, finding out what the soil and a few seeds can

produce and with some care and attention they should harvest some lovely healthy veg.

Colin has made seed blocks from compost and has sown autumn, cauliflower, sprouts and winter cabbage and sprouting broccoli seeds.

We will now make a nice fine seed bed to sow more winter and spring vegetable seeds. We will also sow carrot seeds in the position that they will grow, as we can not transplant them.

I have started to put sweet peppers into the poly tunnel and I am now running out of space, I need to use every inch of space that I can to squeeze in an extra plant or two. The peppers go along the sides and the cucumbers and gherkins go down the middle, supported with posts and netting.

The new potatoes from Colin's greenhouse have gone down a treat, he now has a mix of tomatoes and chilli peppers in their place. We have also had a first picking from his beetroot that he planted in blocks back in January, very nice too. With the daylight hours getting longer it is no wonder that we sleep well at night.

Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Withernsea JUBILEE PROGRAMMES AND COMPETITIONS The Jubilee Celebrations Committee which is a sub-committee of Withernsea Carnival are selling programmes priced at 50p from various retail outlets in the town. A programme will be needed to enter some competitions and take part in some activities.

There is an Art and Photography competition. Entries must be submitted to the Meridian Centre on Wednesday, June 1 between 10am to 12 noon and 4pm to 6pm. Viewing and voting for your favourites will take place at various times over the four days.

Entries for the short story and poetry competitions can be handed in at any event up to 3pm on Saturday, June 4.

JEAN Carter from Withernsea has knitted Jubilee post box toppers for six of the town’s post boxes. The post box Jubilee decorations were put in place on Friday, May 27 with the help of Darren and Marie England.

They will adorn the town over the Jubilee period.

Bikers hope to give beach wheelchair appeal a boost A CHARITY motorbike ride has been organised from Withernsea to Hornsea supporting the appeal to get a beach wheelchair for the Hornsea community.

Brent Smith a biker from Hollym said: “a local resident was wanting to raise money so I said I would ask if there would be any interest. It soon became apparent that there would be opportunity.”

The event ran in conjunction with the Hornsea Foundation will see bikers riding from Castle Café in Withernsea down the coast road and arriving at The New Inn in Hornsea Market place on Sunday, June 19. There will be a free curry and chilli for the participants.

There will also be a family fun day with live music for those attending The New Inn to support the appeal. The event at The New Inn will run from 1pm to around 6pm.

First meeting of Food, friendship and fun at Withernsea Methodist Church A NEW free monthly lunchtime event for the community launched at Withernsea Methodist Church on Hull Road on Thursday, April 28.

The church ran monthly food, friendship and fun event takes place in the community room at 12 noon. The launch event saw visitors enjoying soup and roll followed by a choice of homemade cakes,

scones and trifle. This is all free but donations can be made. Entertainment on the opening session was music and songs from Gordon and Rachel Beastall. At the next session as we go to print on May 26 there was a game of Beetle Drive. The June pop up community café will be on Thursday, June 30 with local poet Richard Harries entertaining. After the

entertainment there will be a choice of coffee, tea or squash, and an opportunity to offer a donation before finishing around 2.30pm.

Withernsea Ladies' Choir Patrington Church concert THE NIGHT of Friday May 20 was very special, a wonderful concert in the hallowed precincts of the magnificent St. Patrick's Church in Patrington. Patrick Pearson was conducting the esteemed Withernsea Ladies' Choir, accompanied by Paul Pike on the piano.

A fairly large and receptive

congregation was treated to an amazingly varied programme of song: old favourites like "Bring Me Sunshine! " or "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"; ballads like "Boats Sail on the Rivers" or "Those were the Days, my Friend" ; also sacred renditions like "St. Patrick's Prayer" or "The Lord Bless You & Keep You."

The food industry businesses can stop losing unrecoverable costs and help stop food waste with a simple registration on an app.

You need a mobile, and access Google Play (Android users) and Apple Store (iPhone users). Search for the free apps listed then download them to your device. The purpose is for market research and you are rewarded with cash or vouchers in exchange for receipts relating to your

MP launches Parliamentary Coronavirus memorial quilt competition for Beverley and Holderness 99 1 BEVERLEY and Holderness MP, Graham Stuart, is launching a Parliamentary Coronavirus Memorial Quilt Competition for his constituents.

The Parliamentary Coronavirus Memorial Quilt is a cross-party project that is being led by Dawn Butler MP to encourage the Parliamentary community to come together in a sign of unity in memory of all those loved and lost during the pandemic. Each MP has been asked to provide a square patchwork block measuring 6 inches square to the quilt to represent what the experience of the pandemic has meant to them. These blocks will then be pieced together to form a quilt that represents the multitude of experiences during this time whilst also demonstrating unity through a single quilt.

Mr Stuart is asking his constituents to take up the opportunity to create the patchwork block that will represent Beverley and Holderness on this quilt, and his favourite one will be included in this historic cross-party project.

To enter this competition, please make a patchwork block measuring sixinch square either by knitting, crocheting or using felt. This block should represent you and your experiences of this time. You may wish to choose a soft fabric because it has brought you comfort, or a colour that has meaning to you during this time, or a logo that represents your experiences. This is an opportunity for you to be creative, learn a new skill and to commemorate your experiences.

Although not compulsory Mr Stuart would like you to write something down on a piece of paper to explain a bit about your block. This might be why you’ve chosen that fabric, how you felt stitching it, what you stitched, how this past year has been for you and/or any other information. East Yorkshire announces changes to bus fares and ticket range BUS company East Yorkshire introduced new tickets and fares on May 22 that make travelling by bus easier than ever before.

In their first review of fares and tickets since September 2019, East Yorkshire has said that the changes will make travelling across the region simpler for customers. The changes will introduce five new app only zones: Beverley, York City, Driffield, York Country and Bridlington Country as well as changes to the existing York Zone. These zones will replace pointto-point weekly tickets, which will no

longer be available to buy on the bus.

Additionally, those who travel within the City of Hull can take advantage of the new and improved Hull Zone which combines the previous Hull & Hull Plus zone areas. This builds on the introduction of their Flexi5 and Flexi20 tickets in 2020 which provides additional flexibility for customers who no longer need to travel every day.

Tickets for the new zones will be available on the East Yorkshire Buses app only, and customers can purchase them in advance to allow for

a quicker, more convenient commute.

Those who frequently travel around Hull can also take advantage of cheaper weekly tickets on app rather than in person.

East Yorkshire’s Area Director, Ben Gilligan, has said: “We’re introducing new ticket zones to help our customers enjoy a simpler journey.

We’ve improved our range of tickets available online and via our app to give customers more choice and flexibility and reduce the need to pay on the bus.

“We recognise that costs for many

people are going up at the moment and we are not insulated from this, so we’re keen to help our customers get the tickets that are most suitable for them. Bus travel is still excellent value with costs from as little as £2 per day which is far cheaper than owning and running a car.”

Customers who already have tickets in their app wallets will still be able to use them as normal until their expiry date, at which point they’ll be able to choose from a new, simplified range.

This change also comes as good

news to furry friends everywhere as dogs now travel for free on any East Yorkshire bus, although customers are encouraged to seat their pets on the floor and not on the seats.

WITHERNSEA used to be blessed with tennis courts. As long ago as 1911 there was a grass court just off the promenade behind what is now the library. Some years later there was a tennis club in Lascelles Avenue with a number of grass courts and what appears to be the remnants of an all weather court. When the bowls club moved from Valley Gardens to their current site in Lascelles Avenue they resurfaced several of what were by then unused tennis courts to make a suitable area flat enough for bowls, the remaining tennis courts becoming somewhat overgrown. Apart from an all weather court with a steel net and decidedly unlevel surface at the area outside the High School on Hull Road there are now no facilities for outdoor tennis in Withernsea, a situation that we would like very much to change.

What we would like to do is provide at least 2 all weather courts, accessible to the public and a club membership, with coaching, mainly for children initially, but possibly for adults at a later stage. So far a survey conducted by Carolyn Sumner has proved that there is sufficient interest locally to make the project worthwhile, and the short tennis sessions held at The Leisure Centre are being well supported.

These sessions are

held on Wednesdays, 5.00 - 6.30 for families and 7.30-9.00pm for adults. There is also table tennis available to try. The group is in the process of agreeing a constitution which is necessary to access funding, has looked at two prospective sites for the courts and has started talking to coaches for future sessions. We now have a secretary, treasurer and chairman and other members of the group who are providing useful experience. Further developments will be reported, hopefully in the very near future.

Snooker Chat with Maverick Mike April 25th I was really looking forward to getting back to my snooker on Saturday, having not played for over a week. I do miss it!

April 26th Overall, it was another great win for the Olympic Outlaws tonight against a great team, Springhead by 8-6.

Again there were some very hard fought battles tonight so well done lads. Kyle Fellows, Alex Fellows, Simon Longstaff, Gareth Fellows, Tom Cunningham, all take a bow.

I had an incredible snooker match against Springhead. Alf Mulligan is scored as a minus 9 player, I'm minus 15, so I gave 6 points start to him. Both of us were missing chances early on and easy balls, until we got down to the coloureds. I was 21 points behind, but managed to clear up all the colours to take the win by 45 points to 39! I potted a super pink, and the final black down the cushion with the rest. It was a great win, but I did feel pressure and nerves. I was shaking, down on shots, and I don’t know how I pulled it off, but I did. I think the encouragement and support from my team mates helped me a lot and made me believe I could win it.

I'd just like to truly thank Alex Fellows and Tom Cunningham for their encouragement and support during my snooker match, it was just what I needed, and much appreciated. I can honestly say when it comes to nerves and being tense, that's the worst I've ever felt.

When I got chances, I couldn’t pot balls if they were in a line! But on the colours I retained my focus, and managed to clear up to win by 6 points. Still not sure how I held myself together, maybe call it raw determination. I think with me loving the sport of snooker, trying my best and wanting the best out of myself, it goes deep. That's why I really appreciate how great special support and times like this are.

Williams next month. I'm very overwhelmed and appreciate it! One bloke came out and said “Well done young man” gave me a fist pump then said “I'm just going to give Ronnie O’Sullivan a ring to get a match with him for you!” If he ever comes to Hull to do an exhibition match, he is one player I would really like to be up against! To all the customers on my rounds, thank you – your support and comments really do mean such a lot to me!

May 14th I had a good talk with my mum on the phone this morning. When I do lose at snooker, I always reflect on my dad. The last text message he ever sent me was “Sounds as although you lost, it was still great snooker. Well enjoyed and well done keep it up” Win or lose he was proud of my efforts

May 3rd Very happy with my play today. I had a new tip fitted to my cue, and now seem to have it bedded in just right. I gave a twenty seven point start, and won my snooker match 70 points to 45. I felt really confident with my new tip striking the ball well and smooth. I kept my head still, and just potted some great long balls. I thought my safety play was pretty good too. Many thanks to Danny West for my new free tip. I felt like a new player tonight, no nerves, I just felt confident with my all round game.

May 10th Had a great snooker match tonight, against Simon Neadley from the Deaf Centre Snooker Club. I gave him maximum 50 points start. I started with a 20 break on my first visit, and felt confident, striking the cue ball well, pulling off some great pots. But he fluked a red, then got a black off it. He could also pot some good balls off his handicap, so I was under the hammer! We got onto the colours, I needed two snookers, getting a cracking snooker on the pink behind the black.

The match went to the wire, but I ended up losing the frame by a single point, 70 to 69. A bit disappointing but it was a great frame of snooker. We both enjoyed it. He was a nice respectful bloke and appreciated the effort of the match so I couldn’t have asked for much more. I certainly don’t mind getting beat if I play to the best of my ability against a player like this.

That’s just the way snooker goes at times.

May 6th A lovely day today, a good day on my bin round in Roos.

I've got incredible respect for him, I know he respects me too. I know

but really enjoying the great snooker I knocked in a 54 break when I was losing 5-2, pure mental torture, but somehow I love it. It’s not always all about winning, it’s how you feel when you’re playing, and knowing you’re playing someone really good.

In the end I lost 6-2 but it was honestly a great match, I really enjoyed it. I was pleased with the 54 break, but to be honest, Alex is an unbelievable player. He deserved the win, a superb pot-fest match.

Patrington Cricket Club monthly update By Danny Collinson PATRINGTON’S first eleven have made an unbeaten start (when sent to press) to the 2022 league campaign with 5 wins from 5 after an excellent month which saw them register some impressive victories. A club record 295 run victory at home to Pickering came on the 30th of April as Patrington registered their highest ever total of 380 for 7 on a beautiful day down at Southside. The batsmen having some fun in the sun with Matthew Dixon (80), Ian Buss (88) and Connor McKinley (57) all hitting half centuries in the formidable total.

The firsts hit an impressive 12 sixes, with 5 of those coming from the bat of Curtis McElwee who treated the crowd to 35 from just 16 balls. The Patrington bowlers then blew away their opponents for just 85 with Grant Van Es (4 for 8) leading the way. This win was then followed up by two excellent run chases, with 5 and 6 wicket wins coming against Yapham and Pocklington respectively. Billy Ineson (3-31) and Grant Van Es (3-41) lead the way with the ball when restricting Yapham to 159 all out. The batsmen then racing to victory inside 30 overs, Ian Buss (55*) and Curtis McElwee (45) carrying on their excellent form, the latter once again delighting the fans hitting 5 towering sixes in his 30 ball stay at the crease.

Despite this fine start, Patrington had still failed to set a high standard in the field with numerous chances going to ground together with some poor ground fielding meant there was still plenty of room for improvement for McKinley’s side. Travelling to Pocklington on another beautiful Saturday afternoon on a belting cricket surface, the first eleven felt they was in for their toughest test to date. This certainly looked to be the case when Pocklington batted first and raced to 120 without loss in the baking sun, once again poor fielding and catching threatened to cost the visitors, but an inspirational spell of fast bowling from Billy Ineson turned the tide. The right arm pace bowler would take 4 wickets for just 28 runs in an excellent 10 over spell, ably supported by Danny Collinson (3-63) Pocklington fell to 169 all out. The run chase followed a similar suit to the previous week, this time it was Wicket keeper batsmen Connor McKinley (60) who led the way with a half century.

Earlier in the innings Ben Butler (27) and Ashley (34) failed to convert starts but had laid a solid foundation.

When Bob Eldon-Smith (23*) joined Connor, Patrington still needed 65 runs for victory, but the pair cruised along as adding an unbeaten 68 to see their side to a convincing 6 wicket win. Confidence now high after an impressive start to the campaign, the first eleven then put in arguably their best performance to date when they blew away Sacarborough’s second eleven at Southside. Batting first, Patrington’s batsmen showed good application and kept up their impressive run of scores when batting first as they posted 288 for 8. Butler (38), Ash McKinley (36), Jacob Duffill (35), Connor McKinley (41) all making telling contributions. (Connor (234) sits top of the division one run scoring charts, just 5 ahead of South

Holderness’ Luke Ingram.) Then came an excellent 86 partnership between Eldon-Smith (23) and that man Curtis McElwee (57) whose explosive half century again delighted the crowd, 3 sixes for the Northern Irish all-rounder as he registered his 13th league six in just 4 innings. The bowlers then blew away the visitors, a return to the first eleven for Liam Murrey (4-31) saw him the destroyer in chief, aided by Van Es (3-7) who now sits top of the divisional wicket takers and skipper McKinley (2-30) the first team registered a fifth straight league success in a ruthless display as they join Driffield 2nd XI at the top of the Division One Table. The firsts will go into a tough looking June full of confidence.

Meanwhile in the Voneus National Village Cup, Patrington got the better of Alne in the second round before receiving a home walkover in round three when Addingham couldn’t raise a side. Entertaining Alne and despite 5 changes to the side they dismissed their opponents for 139. Josh Ratcliffe (2-30) impressing with the new ball before spinners Van Es and Collinson recorded identical figures of 2 for 28 from 8 overs as both bowled excellent spells, before James McGinty (3-16) and Lucas Sneddon (15) wrapped up the innings. A reshuffle in the batting order, saw Bob EldonSmith (36) partner Ben Butler (20) at the top of the innings. These would be the only two top five batsmen to reach double figures as Patrington stumbled to 79 for 4. Captain Ash McKinley came in at number six and took the game away from the visitors, scoring 43 from just 27 balls as Patrington got over the line with 4 wickets in hand and 8 overs to spare. The first eleven have progressed to round four and the regional finals of the Village Cup where they will face Carlton Towers on Sunday 5th June at Southside in what is sure to be a tough tie against a side who ply their trade in the league above, the winners of the North Yorkshire (South) region will then travel to Scotland in round five of the competition to play the winners of the Scottish section. Whilst in the Readman Trophy the first team will play Beverley Seconds at Norwood in Round Two after both sides received a first-round bye. The fixture is scheduled for Wednesday 1st June at 6pm at the ground where the firsts suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of Scarborough in last year’s final.

The Second team have faced a tough start to life in division two but have managed to record a couple of valuable wins as they sit in mid table.

The month started well with a fine 9 wicket win away to Cottingham, wicket keeper batsmen Daniel Fincham the shining light. First of all, the gloveman put in an exceptional display behind the stumps before hitting an unbeaten 87 as the stiffs cruised to victory.

Bowling first the seconds bowled out Cottingham for 156, wickets shared around as Jamie McKinley (2-20), Glenn Ratcliffe (3-39), Jack Eggett (236) and Bob Metcalf (3-24) capped off a fine display with the ball and in the field. Opener Jack Eggett (42*) then added an unbeaten 114 with the

aforementioned Fincham for the second wicket as Patrington cruised to victory. The following week the seconds were well and truly humbled when they travelled to Hessle, despite restricting the home side to 147 all out thanks in large to Craig Foster’s 5 wickets in his first appearance of the season, Patrington were then dismissed for a paltry 67 all out. The margin of defeat could have been larger and far more embarrassing as the visitors found themselves 3 for 7 before Brian Butler (31) and Lucas Sneddon added 49 for the eighth wicket to restore some pride for their side. The seconds then put in a muchimproved display when they entertained Driffield Thirds, falling agonisingly short of victory in a Southside thriller. Batting first the home side registered 192 with Captain McKinley hitting a season high 90 from just 72 deliveries, hitting 6 fours and 7 sixes in a fine knock.

Despite a good effort with the ball and two wickets a piece for Foster, Marc Pollard, Jack Eggett and Chris Blanchard the seconds couldn’t quite force the win as Driffield got over the line with 9 balls to spare. But the performances had improved, and the seconds got rewarded the following week on their travels to Beverley.

Again, captain McKinley (66) leading the way with the bat with a second half century, and he was well supported by Lucas Sneddon with the pair adding 68 for the ninth wicket in a match defining partnership as the visitors posted a competitive 158 all out. Craig Foster again amongst the wickets, he led from the front taking 4 for 33 to make it 11 wickets in three games as a polished bowling and fielding performance saw Patrington dismiss Beverley for 96 marking a second win of the season. An encouraging month for the stiffs with two wins from four games, but three good performances mean they go into June in a good frame of mind in what is a more than competitive league, sitting in mid-table, but with a tough June ahead, including a trip to league leaders Hornsea the ambition of staying in the league remains.

The thirds have had a tough start to their start in the Sunday East Division.

Bowled out for just 53 in their first game of the season at home to Pelican, they at least showed some fight with the ball taking 6 Pelican wickets, skipper James McGinty (3-16) helping reduce the visitors to 32-6 as Patrington sensed an unlikely victory, but an assured 21 not out from Elugeti saw Pelican home with no further alarms. The thirds then failed to raise a side for the away trip to Kirk Ella meaning they had to concede the game. They then picked up a first win of the season at home to Welton. The

thirds aided by the Sunday morning call up of Ben Butler who scored a half century after good contributions from Liam Murrey (19), James Medcalf (21), McGinty (22) and Lucas Sneddon (27*) saw the thirds post 169 for 9. With the ball, the returning Murrey (4-21) blew away the Welton top order, assisted by the spin of Sneddon (3-30) the pair bowled their side to a 43-run victory. That was then followed by a disappointing 87 run defeat on the road to Hull Strikers.

The home side batting first managed to post 191 despite having been 81-7 thanks to the bowling efforts of Bob Metcalf (2-41), Harry Newton (2-37) and McElwee (3-16). It was always going to be a tough chase and after a positive start from Ratcliffe (30) and Mike Ward as the visitors added 44 for the first wicket, Patrington failed to get to grip with the hosts spinners and fell for 104 all out to make it a third defeat in four games. It has been tough for the thirds and certainly for captain McGinty, the constant lack of availability and players meaning it’s a tough ask just to fulfil fixtures and field a full side. The club could certainly benefit from some new additions to the club as a whole and not just the third eleven. Withernsea AFC Under 9s at Butlins By Andrew Neal WHAT A weekend for our young seasiders, an action packed weekend including football, fun fairs, swimming, team bonding, night time entertainment and making memories.

It had finally come round for the Withernsea under 9’s to attend the ESF Butlins football tournament in Skegness. In total there were 150 teams on site for the weekend with teams travelling from as far as Scotland, Cumbria, Newcastle, Essex and even Spain. In the under 9 section there were 28 teams split into four groups. The young seasiders were grouped with Dunscroft JFC, Killingworth YPC, Shifnal town, Whitehaven Yellows, Rufforth Utd , Moultan Magpies and Skegness.

Day 1 of the tournament started with a goalless draw v’s group winners Killingworth YPC, and then followed with a loss to second placed Dunscroft JFC. The boys then got their win when Josh and Louie both finished well to get the victory over Moulton Magpies. The boys were in with a chance of qualifying from the group at the end of day one.

Day two was soon upon us and I think the late night and hours of swimming the previous day had a part to

play. The boys narrowly went down by a single goal to Whitehaven Yellows, and then got a draw v Rufforth Rangers. The last game of the day was the best of the entire weekend although it was a goalless draw v Shifnal Town, the boys played their best football.

We had numerous chances to kill the game off, but the Shifnal Town keeper was on fire. The highlight of the weekend was the presentation evening, it was a prefect finale designed to make the young footballers

feel like a professional and just to be at a special event.

The trophies were presented to every child by Liverpool and England legend Kevin Keegan. He gave a great speech and all the boys have hopefully taken onboard his tips and advice. Kevin Keegan also brought his first ever England cap for the presentation and every team captain from each team got to wear the cap for the photo shoot.

The winning team was Northampton Jnrs who beat Killingworth in the final. The

whole weekend cannot be put in to words but we hope the pictures show how the boys enjoyed their trip. The Withernsea under 9’s are not just a team, we are a footballing family. If any junior side was looking to attend this event, we fully recommend it. We want to thank every parent, family member, friend or club member who donated to our fundraising page to help this trip happen. Roll on 2024 when we are looking to organise a football tournament to Barcelona.

Withernsea AFC – Senior presentation night and round-up THE CLUB held their senior presentation night at the Willows Club on Saturday, May 14. Hull City Legend Dean Windass was on hand to provide the entertainment as the club celebrated a good season on the pitch. The evenings winners were:

Withernsea Bowling Club Results

Walking Football coming to Withernsea DANNY Henderson is hoping to use his passion for Walking Football to get a group set up in Withernsea.

He has received help and support from Active Withernsea to help get the venture going.

Initially a 10 week free trial has been set up to see if there is the demand locally. This starts on Friday, July 1 from 6pm to 7pm at Withernsea Leisure Centre and the sessions are tailored to suit all abilities.

Talking about the inspiration behind trying to get a group started locally Danny said: “I was passionate about starting walking Football sessions in the area after coming across them a few years ago and found them to be really beneficial to my mental and physical health.

“After I suffered a back injury that has left me with nerve pain issues I didn't think football was an option for me anymore due to the competitive nature and physical demand of the sport. By chance I was attending mental health sessions at the charity Mind and was introduced to the

opportunity to play at a few sessions locally to me. At these sessions there was a mixture of ages and abilities, even a young guy with cerebral palsy. We all enjoyed the activity despite our range of limitations, it helped me with my anxiety especially when meeting people. I thought if it helped me it could help others who may be in similar situations.

Unfortunately the sessions were only temporary and then Covid put a stop to any plans I had due to restrictions regarding group activities. Now that restrictions aren’t an issue I am able to try and get a similar activity going in the local area so that others have the same opportunity I had.

“I hope to see people of all ages, abilities and genders participate and can hopefully for it to become something done on a permanent basis depending on the popularity of course. Hopefully we may reach out to other areas around the East riding in the future.”

A season to forget for Easington

EASINGTON United’s season was set to end on Tuesday, 31 May when the Awd Ezzies hosted title hopefuls Northern Wanderers in Hull Veterans League Division 5.

Although the locals’ own promotion hopes disappeared some time back, it has still been their most successful season since entering the competition.

Sadly the same cannot be said of the Saturday teams’ campaigns, which ended a fortnight ago with the first team’s defeat by Hedon Rangers in the final of the annual South Holderness Cup competition.

It’s fair to say that the game, which resulted in a 6-2 win for the holders (and newly crowned Humber Premier League champions) somewhat typified the locals’ season as a whole.

For while player withdrawals and some awful defensive slips again contributed to yet another defeat in a season of many, there was also plenty of encouragement to be had too, which is also pretty much a summary of the past nine months!

Frustrating as it must have been (again) for management duo Craig Foster and Craig Smalley to see the same negative factors come into play, they will certainly take plenty of heart from the commendable spirit shown by their side, which at times was combined with some lovely football and earned them some welldeserved plaudits afterwards.

Given the youthful nature of the current squad (which included six teenagers and only five players aged 25 or over) there is no reason why there can’t be realistic hopes for a much better time of things in the not-too-distant future.

Before then, the players and management will get the chance to come together one more time when the club holds its annual presentation evening. That is scheduled to take place on 11 June in the Marquis of Granby, by which time club members will already be enjoying a wellearned rest after a season that has had more than its fair share of sadness and setbacks.

In particular, the passing of vice-chairman and former manager Mike Wilson in January rocked everybody given his stature within the club.

Sadly, he was just one of several ‘Eastenders’ we have said goodbye to over the course of the season.

Mickey Bo’s death further accentuated the

sombre mood that appeared almost ever present during a season in which fortunes on the field were never great – at least as far as the Saturday sides were concerned.

All four Easington teams finished in the bottom two places of their respective divisions, which perhaps isn’t surprising given the constant struggle for numbers. It’s a situation that has prompted the scrapping of a fourth team in 2022/23 – just a year after the club fielded four teams for the first time in its history.

Hopefully, the reduction in quantity can be accompanied by an improvement in quality, certainly in terms of commitment.

Technically, the First Team haven’t yet completed their Humber Premier League Division 1 schedule, with the home game against Driffield Evening Institute still outstanding. A decision on the outcome of this is still awaited.

Of the games that were played, the locals were beaten 1-2 at home by Hutton Cranswick SRA in their final HPL fixture; Billy Symes scoring the locals’ leveller before a late Cranny winner consigned United to a 13th league defeat.

Liam Murrey then bagged an excellent brace in the 4-1 win over Withernsea that took Easington to the South Holderness Cup Final.

Jack Wright and Harvey Clarke were also on target.

The locals then responded well in the final, cancelling out an early Dan Clancy goal for Hedon when Wright equalised on 39 minutes, only to fall behind again immediately from the restart; Joe Wood the scorer.

Wood’s goal was the first of four in a tenminute spell either side of half-time, Nick Sison and the completion of Clancy’s hat-trick effectively settling the tie with over half-an-hour to go.

Wright pulled one back for 5-2 before Rob Petch rounded off the scoring with Hedon’s sixth goal late on.

In contrast to results on the field of play, club members can look back with much satisfaction at their efforts away from the action. In particular, the two-year association with Hull4Heroes yielded a total of £1,500 towards the local veterans’ charity. The final instalment

of this will be formally handed over at the aforementioned presentation night.

The Eastenders will now 2 look to forge a similarly successful partnership with the independent Hull Hospitals charity, WISHH, which is to be our chosen good cause for 2022/23. Our fundraising efforts will be organised in memory of Mike Wilson and, as such, specifically targeted towards Wards 30 and 32 at the Queen’s Centre, Castle Hill Hospital.

Also, looking forward, the club will look to mark two milestones later this year, when both the club’s 75th anniversary and chairman Doug Clubley’s 60 years’ involvement are set to be marked by the club. Meanwhile, the chairman and his wife Rosie also celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary on 3 June. Congratulations go to them from all at Low Farm!

The official 75th Anniversary Sporting Dinner takes place in the Circle Restaurant at the MKM Stadium on Saturday, 24 September, with guest speaker being the former Newcastle, Liverpool and England star Peter Beardsley MBE, along with MC/comedian John Gillan.
