Local community pull together to support people of Ukraine SINCE reports broke of the war in Ukraine the local community have rallied to do what they can to support the people impacted.

One of these is Mark Gleaves from Hornsea who set up Hornsea Help for Ukraine and has been in Hornsea Tesco car park every weekend in March collecting donations. Mark said: “Everyone has been so kind and generous. It's been amazing seeing how wonderful people have been. I needed to do something to help otherwise I felt so helpless just standing by and seeing everything that was happening.

“I've managed to fill five transit vans with essential supplies of food, toiletries and medical supplies. I've worked in close coordination with The Living Hope Church in Hull who have coordinated the logistics of sending lorries out to the border and also deep into Ukraine.

“Some businesses and individuals have given cash donations which have then been converted into essential supplies. Hornsea District Lions have kindly supported me with transport assistance.”

Mark will continue to collect in Hornsea Tesco car park on a Friday and Saturday from 12 noon to 4pm while the donations keep coming. He said that although items that are needed change on a weekly basis the main items now required include nonperishable food items, medicines and

medical supplies.

Kirsty Lamming from Hornsea created crochet blue and yellow ribbons which she told outside of Robinsons Newsagents raising £175. She used this to buy urgently needed medical supplies which were donated to Mark in Tesco car park. Kirsty said: “A special thanks to Richard and Tracey Metcalfe at Whittles chemist for supplying well over £175 worth of medical supplies, and their kind donation of three first aid kits. Once again thank you to everyone who bought a ribbon or donated.”

Meanwhile Jude and Stan at Coastal Connections Hornsea are creating fused glass brooches in the form of the Ukraine flag. Wanting to give help to the Ukrainian people in this terrible crisis, Stan realised that by investing their time and energy in making they would be able to generate far more in donations. The brooches are available

at The Townhouse shop in Hornsea for £4 each with £3 from each brooch being donated to the Red Cross to support their work in the Ukraine region. Jude commented: “People have expressed their thanks that a purchase enables them to show their support and also to contribute to the cause in some way.” So far the sale of the brooches has raised £500 with new stock of the brooches being produced weekly.

Hornsea Community Primary School pupil Robyn Harper has also created blue and yellow beaded bracelets to raise money for the Red Cross raising over £150 – these can be ordered from Robyn’s Rainbows Hornsea on Facebook.

the Chief Fire Officer and all Directors that the support for the people of Ukraine was so forthcoming. It has been organised by the charity Fire Aid UK together with Fire Authorities across England. This charity has been in existence for 25 years and has provided emergency services to over 50 countries in the past. The first convoy left from Ashford in Kent on March 19 followed shortly by a second convoy because so much equipment had been donated including many fire appliances one of which was from Humberside plus PPE and 2,000 sets of fire kit and a great deal of other decommissioned equipment. It was driven to Poland by fire brigade volunteers. The volunteers also gave training to 120 fire fighters when they arrived on how to use the engines. I am very proud of Humberside Fire Authority staff who have all worked so hard to help and support everyone.”

Local schools and businesses are also collecting donations and fundraising for Ukraine as the war continues. Meanwhile a Facebook group has been set up for those who have registered with the UK Government to host Ukrainian refugees in Hornsea to help create a support network, this can be found by searching on Facebook for: Hornsea Host Collective.

The Survivor is coming to Hornsea, will you welcome her?

THE ODYSSEY may have started in Greece, but it has found its home on the Yorkshire Coast! Yorkshire Coast BID have partnered with renowned Scarborough theatre company Animated Objects, to deliver the next instalment of ‘The Odyssey – An Epic Adventure on the Yorkshire Coast’. This next part of the adventure sees a giant puppet known as The Survivor tour iconic destinations along the Yorkshire coast this April and May. The Survivor project follows the success of The Trojan Wars exhibition.

The Odyssey project has been brought to life on film and as an audio app featuring over 500 members of the resident and business community. It showcases the people and voices of the Yorkshire Coast which positions The Odyssey as one of the biggest event series taking place in a coastal area.

Animated Objects, known for large scale events with larger than life puppets and lantern parades, unveiled the true scale of the next instalment ‘The Survivor’. When completed it will stand at a towering five meters tall. It will bring to life the story of a survivor of conflict in the Trojan Wars. She starts her journey washed up on a shore unfamiliar to her. She is lost; frightened and alone. The project will welcome her in each town with artworks, music, and spoken word as she arrives. She will then be taken on a tour through coastal towns to explore her surroundings and offered shelter along the journey. Her name will be revealed as part of the live events.

Animated Objects explain: “This incredible visual performance, tells the tale of ‘The Survivor’, a teenage girl displaced by war and conflict. From the moment she washes up on the shore; is rescued; and treated with kindness; to her being paraded along the coast, and receiving a warm welcome from residents, the performance tells every inch of her story.”

The Survivor will be visiting Hornsea beach in front of

the Coastwatch station and the promenade by the Floral Hall on Saturday, April 30. She will also tour the Yorkshire Coast BID area on an open topped bus, passing through rural locations between Spurn Point and Staithes on Sunday, May 8 coming through Hornsea in the morning and afternoon follow Animated Objects on social media for timings: @animatedobjects.

Speaking of the Yorkshire Coast BID’s involvement in the project, Kerry Carruthers, Chief Executive said: “The scale of this project and the public involvement led by Animated Objects, is what brings this to life. This event series would not have been possible without the many hundreds of residents, businesses and community organisations taking this to their hearts. It makes Homer’s Odyssey feel as if it always had the Yorkshire Coast in mind.

“It has been fantastic to be involved with such a creative project and see it come to life over the last three years. We’re going to be documenting the journey with behind-the-scenes footage and filming snippets of the activity to show the scale and hard work that has gone into this project.”

Dawn Dyson-Threadgold from Animated Objects said: “We have such an incredible coastline and countryside and that’s why we’ve chosen to set such an epic tale in this unique and dramatic landscape. The tale of ‘The Survivor’ is beautiful, relevant and important, which shows the kindness all people should be treated with. Yorkshire Water invests £2m in nature-based solutions for Hornsea Mere YORKSHIRE Water has announced a £2m contribution to improving nutrient infiltration into watercourses upstream of Hornsea Mere.

Impacts from agriculture, businesses and wastewater treatment works can result in phosphorus and other nutrients in rivers. By working with farmers and other stakeholders to review land management practices and deliver nature-based solutions, Yorkshire Water hopes to improve water quality in the area.

The investment comes as the government and Natural England announced new rules limiting the approval of new homes in areas where nutrient levels are high, one of which is Hornsea Mere.

Chris Offer, director of strategy and regulation at Yorkshire Water, said: “We know how important new housing is for economic development and believe it’s vital that local stakeholders come together to address any issues that might prevent the development of new homes.

“Using the expertise we’ve developed in our Sustainable Landscapes partnership; we will bring people and organisations together to reduce nutrients in watercourses.”

COLOUR CHANGING MURMURATION TAKES FLIGHT THE MURMURATION on Hull Road and Southgate roundabout has caused some confusion in recent weeks. The murmuration forms part of the Hornsea Pottery trail in the town and is usually an iconic Hornsea Pottery orange however over recent weeks it started to change colour with blue and white painted over the orange. East Riding Ward Councillor Barbara Jefferson said: “The graffiti done to the murmuration has created quite a stir as it changed overnight from orange to blue and some of the birds turning white. East Riding Council has had to remove it so that it can return to the original orange and then it will be back on the roundabout in the future as this is part of the Pottery Trail in the town and residents are concerned about its disappearance.” The murmuration needs blasting before being repainted so has to be removed to keep vehicles safe and the road open while this is carried out.

Free debt advice service opens in Hornsea By Stuart Kemp HORNSEA Community Money Advice has recently opened the doors to the public offering local residents free professional advice. This can be helping to budget their finances, negotiate with creditors chasing payments or any other debt problem.

Crochet fundraiser receives wool prize KIRSTY Lamming from Hornsea has received a wool prize after winning a Stylecraft competition after being nominated as a crafting charity champion for her work raising money and lifting spirits through crochet.

Kirsty first began crocheting little gifts to leave around the town to lift spirits during the

pandemic. Most recently she has made and sold handmade love heart badges in aid of the Teenage Cancer Unit at Castle Hill Hospital and made blue and yellow crochet ribbons to raise money for the Ukraine appeal.

CROSS COUNTRY COMPETITION FOR COMIC RELIEF PUPILS at Hornsea Community Primary school took part in a cross country competition on Thursday, March 10 for Comic Relief. Each year group came together in turn to complete the event with the top three from each year group receiving a certificate and the winner of first place also getting a medal. The event was inspired by this year's theme ‘Keep Fit’.

Then on Red Nose Day itself on Friday, March 18 pupils came into school in sportswear, anything red or spotty or comic relief t-shirts.

Fairy door donations and Easter door competition in memory of Men in Sheds member 1 HORNSEA Men in Sheds have presented Hornsea Burton School with some concrete fairy doors, gingerbread men and butterflies. They have been made by the talented Brian Amhurst in memory of past shed member Sue Graham known as ‘Curly Sue’.

In the lockdown last year Curly Sue would randomly hide fairy doors she had made on her dog walk ,with the message on the back: “Take me home and paint me”. It became very popular with the community and children would look out for the doors to take home.

Sue was a talented member of the shed with lots of ideas for crafting and promoting the Shed.

She also made a number of fairy houses carved out of logs. Sadly she passed away last year after a short illness. The ‘Shed’ wanted to do something in her memory and made the doors which were presented to the school for the children to paint. We hope they enjoy painting them.

Another of Sue’s ideas was to encourage residents to decorate their front doors for Easter. We are continuing with this theme again this year, so please join in and decorate your front door and send a picture of it to Hornseameninsheds@gmail.com. We will display them at our open day on April 19. The deadline for photos to be submitted is Thursday, April 14.

They will be judged by the local community with three prizes for the best decorated doors.

Residents in the East Riding are being encouraged to complete an online survey about fast food litter THE WASTE and recycling team at East Riding of Yorkshire Council is asking people to take part in the consultation to air their views on how the littering of packaging from fast food outlets affects the area.

The team is looking to gather the opinions of residents, local businesses, visitors, and parish and town councils on the impact of this particular problem.

Councillor Chris Matthews, the council’s portfolio holder for environment and climate change, said: “We would really appreciate residents helping us by filling out the survey.

Litter is a major issue for every local authority. At East Riding of Yorkshire Council, we spend around £3.9million per year cleaning up litter, and many residents feel strongly about this problem, with several volunteer litter picking groups active in areas including Bridlington, Beverley and Hessle.

“A major contributor to the amount of litter on our streets, our roadsides and in parks and play areas, is packaging waste dropped by customers using fast food outlets. This is often waste which could otherwise be easily recycled if it was disposed of properly. It’s often difficult to identify

the people who dropped it, and can be very unsightly in communities where the outlets are based. So we need people to help us try to get on top of the issue” The survey takes less than five minutes to complete and asks for views about the area you live, what your opinions are of litter and some suggested solutions to the problem.

Hornsea Pantry appealing for help as cost of living crisis sees demand soar THREE years after opening The Hornsea Pantry is busier than ever as the cost of living continues to soar. They are urgently appealing for donations of both their popular items and monetary donations to help them continue to operate.

Christine Parkinson from the Pantry said: “We do have wonderful supporters who help us weekly but the need is so much greater now.” Like many organisations The Pantry has been unable to fundraise during the pandemic which has had a knock on impact on reserves. As well as paying a monthly rent The Pantry

does a top up shop twice a week at supermarkets, butchers and other sundries stores spending between £80 - £110 per week to top up food, a figure that is growing.

The Pantry is open from 9am – 10.30am at Hornsea Parish Church Hall on a Wednesday and Friday. Although the Pantry provides food support it is not a foodbank. The main difference being that users choose their own food and groceries as they would in a shop. These are priced at ten items of your choice for £4 or five items for £2, well below the retail

price. The food is predominantly purchased by The Pantry with all age groups in mind and includes items for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. There is also a good selection of meat, fish, vegan and vegetarian options. The Pantry also receives a small amount of end of date food from Co-op which Christine who runs the Pantry collects and is provided free to Pantry customers. The HUG Allotment and Angus Robinson donate many of their homegrown fruit and vegetables to The Pantry which are free of charge for their customers too.

The Pantry is open on a Wednesday and Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am. You can collect a membership card at the door and then come and shop.

The Pantry doesn't choose shoppers' items, these are chosen by shoppers themselves.

There is no age limit to using The Pantry, it is there to support anyone who needs it and everyone can expect a friendly welcome.

The Pantry are appealing for donations both financial and any unwanted items and gifts for their fundraising tombola’s and as raffle prizes.

Hornsea resident produces fundraising book to support refugee charity MONICA Chapman from Hornsea has recently produced a book “A pause for Thought” to raise funds for the Welcome House Charity in Hull. After relocating to Hornsea from London last year Monica was inspired by the Sacred Heart Church to help with their fundraising for the charity.

The charity was set up in 2020 to support Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Hull and East Riding. This felt like a good fit for Monica whose mother was a Polish refugee. The book was completed just three weeks before the war in Ukraine started.

One of Monica’s hobbies is journaling something which she felt inspired to do daily during the pandemic. She has combined some of the reflective journal entries with quotes from books she has also read together in the book. Between the writing are photographs taken by Monica and drawings and paintings done by both herself and her adult children Julian Chapman and Ruth Chapman.

Prior to retirement Monica worked as a head of art in a high school. She had done a similar money raising book with students after one of their year nine pupils sadly died of cancer. That book

contained messages of hope and raised £5000 for the Royal Marsden Hospital where the pupil received treatment.

Although Monica’s journal entries at the time were done as a private project as opposed to for an audience she has taken the relevant ones from her daily updates to help inspire. She explained: “It was a good companion through lockdown and helped me make something from it.”

Monica is now settled in Hornsea where her best friend lives and fulfils a retirement dream to live by the sea. She added: “I like the unpretentious, friendly nature of the town. My neighbours have all been so supportive too.”

Monica’s A4 sized book ‘A Pause for Thought’ has been printed by Signs and Graphics on Seaton Road with Monica saying: “Mark has been a fantastic help.”

Work starts on the La Grande Motte Garden MONDAY, March 21 saw the start of the upgrade of the La Grande Motte Garden also known as Cross of Lorraine on the Hornsea south sea front.

East Riding Ward and Town Councillor Barbara Jefferson updated Hornsea Town Council at their meeting on March 21 that the work had started and would be done in two phases as the cost was greater than the funding allowed currently.

She added: “The work was first muted about 11 years ago when it was beginning to need some care, however over the following years when funding became available it was never enough. At one time East Riding Council had looked at the area to develop for housing, but this was never followed through.

“It is envisaged that it will be a like for like replacement to the top area and retaining walls with a gentler slope for wheelchair users and more substantial steps. This will

make this area more of a destination for the public to enjoy. The central four sided pyramid of cobbles with paths leading to it in the shape of the Cross of Lorraine will also be maintained to make it safe.” The contractor carrying out the work asked Cllr Jefferson for help in obtaining additional cobbles for the pyramid.

She has contacted a local builder who has been able to help with this request.

The original plaque dated May 9, 1981 which refers to when the towns of Hornsea and La Grande Motte in France were twinned is no longer in situ. Councillor Jefferson has however said: “As I was one of the party who visited France for the treaty to be signed I will make every effort to have it remade and replaced in the future.”

Phase two of this development is already being discussed and Councillor Jefferson has assured residents this will be actioned in due course.

Magnificent Fundraising initiative by 1st Hornsea Brownies By Ian Worsdale HORNSEA Inshore Rescue received a boost to their funds on Monday, March 28 when they were presented with £262 by the First Hornsea Brownies. Last year a number of the Brownies visited the headquarters of Hornsea Inshore Rescue and following this visit decided they would pick them as their fundraising charity. Five food hampers were made available to raffle and the Brownies sold tickets to friends and family at £1 each. A terrific £525 was raised and half of this was to go towards the Brownie’s funds and half to Hornsea Inshore Rescue. The girls also made thank you cards and a poster saying:

“We chose you because you save people from the sea”.

This was all part of the Brownie charities badge which all of the fifteen unit members received. It entailed learning about charities and then choosing a charity to support.

The donation was gratefully received by Coxswain Steve Hall who gave the Brownies a short talk on sea safety and the work of Hornsea Inshore Rescue. He also spoke of the rescue at the weekend of a broken down jet ski with two

people aboard. As guest of honour Steve, assisted by the Brownies, then drew the winning raffle tickets. Steve

thanked the Brownies for their cards and super poster which will be displayed at the Boathouse.

RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS SEES 94 YEAR OLD HORNSEA RESIDENT GIFTED A BIRTHDAY CAKE HORNSEA resident Edith Scarth has recently celebrated her 94th birthday.

She had gone into the Hornsea Cooplands shop to order herself a birthday cake a

few weeks earlier so it was delivered to her home in time for her birthday.

When Edith went in and asked to settle the bill she was told that a lady customer who

had been in the shop when the cake was ordered had waited for her to leave and then paid for the cake. This single act of kindness has made Edith’s year - so much so that it brought

tears of joy to her eyes.

Edith’s relatives and friends join her in thanking this stranger for her kindness and generosity and making her 94th Birthday such a special one.

We all need to balance the books, Hornsea is a seasonal town to trade in.

In the last two years many of us have experienced unpresidential changes that have been out of our control. We are now trading with

‘new normal’ business trends influencing our businesses. Some of our shops have decided to temporarily close on Mondays as lack of footfall and income generated out of season on a Monday is not covering running costs of the business.

Many hours are spent behind the scenes organising our business requirements for our daily operations. Owners work long

hours, this seasonal change gives them an opportunity to recharge their batteries creating an improved life work balance, while respecting the requirements of their customers and business demands.

We have seen a welcome change as some new customers, rather than making a trip out of Hornsea, are supporting our local businesses. This is appreciated

Helen describes herself as an expressive painter whose work celebrates the freedom and joy that she draws from the landscape. Her love and understanding of colour are evident in her art. With her bold palette and expressive marks she aims to share the

Hornsea pebble boats 50th anniversary By Stuart Kemp THIS YEAR marks the 50th anniversary of Hornsea Pebble Boats, the first pebble boats were designed by Hornsea Boat Builder Joe Gelsthorpe and followed the traditional lines of a coble boat.

The first boats were made out of fibreglass and were 16 feet long, with the advent of the metric system in 1972 this became five metres (16’4). Joe and his team of boat builders were building 10 boats a week from their workshops at Hornsea and Barmston and this demand kept going into the mid 1990’s. Overall it is thought Joe and his team built 30 Coble boats and about 2000 fibreglass pebble boats. Demand declined largely due to the fact the boats lasted so well compared to their wooden

predecessors. There are many of Joe’s boats still working today from the west coast of Scotland to several lochs in Scotland where they are used for salmon fishing. They also still operate out of Bridlington for commercial use and a small number are used out of Hornsea for crabs etc.. Joe still has the moulds so could if asked still build the boats to the same specification.

A coble can hold around six people for fishing trips and commercial trips. Over the years other companies tried to build cobles but could not compete with Joe’s design and craftsmanship and many cobles in use today were built

by Joe. When first built a Coble would cost about £230 but today a similar one would cost in the region

of £3000. Generally small boats are not in demand these days due to the large number of them still being used on a regular basis. Joe is quite rightly proud that so many of these boats are still in use across the United Kingdom and that cobles built by him will be around for many more years. Joe is a well-known character in Hornsea, he was a Coastguard for many years and his knowledge of pebble boats is second to none.

Hornsea Foundation events update HORNSEA Foundation are once again doing the bunny run on Easter Sunday. They will have bunnies riding around on motorbikes from 11am to 4pm. If people can get a snap of one of them on their phone and bring it along to Med Mex on Newbegin they will be exchanging for a free Easter Egg. There will also be an Easter hunt with 12 Easter pictures in shops around Hornsea from April 8 until Easter Sunday.

Entry forms will be available in shops or you can print one from the Hornsea Foundation Facebook page. These again need taking to Med Mex where the Foundation will be

drawing three winners to win an Easter chocolate basket.

There are still some tickets available for Little Mix at the Barn on Saturday, May 14 but be quick as tickets are selling fast.

The pillow fight registration forms are now available from Our House Estate Agents, Quick and Clarke, and Hunters Home Improvements. These can also be printed from the Foundation Facebook page and they can either be dropped back at the shops or brought with you on the day.

Recent donations include a donation of £200 to the Hornsea Walking Netball Team earlier in March and a donation to the National Coastwatch institution of £546.00 which was raised from the weekly quiz and some of the raffle ticket sales from the sofa set. The quiz fundraising for the Hornsea First Aid Centre has now come to an end with the total raised in next month's paper. The weekly quizzes will now be raising money for Lucky Hedgehog Rescue. The quiz is on a Tuesday at The New Inn in Hornsea Market Place and starts at 8 pm.

Hornsea Lions update By Lion Mel Watson WE WERE delighted to induct two new members into the club recently Gerry Woolfenden and Shaun Leggett.

We are always on the lookout for suitable potential members.

We suffered a big blow at the beginning of March when 14 Lions contracted Covid 19 . It was ‘touch and go’ whether we would be able to keep the shop open.

Fortunately, healthy volunteers and Lions stepped up to the plate and did several extra shifts to ensure that we didn't let our customers down.

Many of you will remember that we had a fantastic response from Hornsea School and Language College with hundreds of children taking part in the Lions Peace Poster competition last year. Layla White was selected as our candidate to go forward into the District Finals which she won.. It was a fantastic achievement as there are 86 clubs in the District. A presentation of the trophy, a collection of art materials and her painting nicely framed, took place in the School.

We recently made one of our largest individual donations to Hornsea Burton/Skipsea Schools Federation. £10,000 was given to them for the purchase of interactive white boards. The £10,000 was made up of £5000 from Hornsea Lion Past President Michael Parry's outgoing Presidential grant and £5000 voted from our activities account. Radio Humberside Presenter Amanda White came to the School to do an interview for broadcast on local radio.

Several other local donations have been made this month: ● HATS Kids: £1000 to help with the costs of Matilda ● Hornsea Coastwatch: £600 for new noticeboards ● Aldborough baby & toddler group: £1200 to pay for a year’s rent for their premises ● Long Riston and Sigglesthorne Primary Schools: £1065 for coach hire for the annual trip The big news is that the Lions annual picnic trip for senior citizens will go ahead this year on Sunday, May 8. As usual, there will be a £2 charge to reserve a seat on one of the five coaches. In order to avoid chaos in the shop, arrangements have been made for an alternate venue for the sale of tickets. Tickets will be available on Monday, April 25 in Hornsea Methodist Church from 9.30am, using the Cinema Street entrance.

Hornsea Rotary Club update

By Sidney Fox MOVED by the recent pictures of the war in Ukraine, Hornsea and East Riding Rotary Club donated a further ‘Shelter Box’ to assist the displaced victims of the war. A shelter box is tailored to the local need and typically contains items needed for everyday living. In addition it was decided to contribute £500 to the Disaster Emergency Committee to

help refugees.

The date for the ever popular ‘Last Night of the Proms’ will be October 1 this year.

The next fundraising event for the club will be the golf AM-AM to be held at Hainsworth Park Golf Club on Friday, April 29. Rotarian Tony Chappel was pleased to report that 30 teams had entered at the time of writing this article.

Hornsea Inshore Rescue fundraisers donate over £5000 By Ian Worsdale OVER the last few weeks Hornsea Inshore Rescue has received three very much needed donations towards the £40,000 plus yearly running costs.

This includes £300 from the Ladies of the Swan in Seaton (in adjacent story). The recently formed group Hornsea Inshore Lifeboat Supporters (HILS), based at Skirlington, donated £5,000 raised by car boot sales, an indoor mini-market, craft stalls, an auction for a trip on the lifeboat and a Christmas Market which alone raised £600. The group’s initiator and organiser, Elayne Greenhough, started the group in September 2021 due to an interest in things nautical as her grandfather had been in the merchant navy, saved many lives and was always a strong supporter of the lifeboats.

He had a soft spot for Hornsea and was a regular visitor along with a young Elayne. Elayne told me she was thrilled that the HILS group was now being officially sponsored

by Aquashield Plumbers and Gas Engineers of Hull. Since January 1, the group have already raised £570 which will be added to during the coming months activities with a presentation being made later in the year.

Long term supporters of Hornsea Inshore Rescue, Hedon Insurers, have also made a significant contribution. Manager, Anne Walters, commented: “We have always supported Hornsea Inshore Rescue who go above and beyond to save lives, they are brilliant. We were so inspired by the work of HILS that we decided to add to the funds by £500.”

On behalf of Hornsea Inshore Rescue, Sue Hickson –Marsay thanked all the contributors saying: “It is through the magnificent work of all our local supporters that we can continue with our truly local life saving operations. We do also raise funds by offering RYA training courses and subsequent provision of RYA licences of competence in Off Shore Power Boating, Jet Ski and use of VHF radio. We also do the very popular Fish and Ships lunches and suppers giving an intimate view of Hornsea Inshore Rescue’s history and present operation.”

LADIES OF THE SWAN SEATON DONATE £600 TO LOCAL CHARITIES 1

A GROUP of ladies in the village of Seaton have formed a group back in October after the Covid lockdowns.

Meeting in The Swan Inn in the village every Monday the friends and neighbours chat, knit and enjoy drinks and cake. The cakes are donated by the ladies who enjoy baking and everyone makes a donation towards them as well as having a tombola each week. This has seen the group raise £600 since October. Helen Foster from the group said: “As well as providing a lovely afternoon and raising money for charity it also helps to support our village pub on one of their quieter days of the week. The ladies all buy a drink or two so thanks to John from The Swan for his support.”

Marsey Chair of Hornsea Inshore Rescue received a cheque on behalf of the Hornsea independent lifeboat charity for £300. She thanked the ladies and talked about the importance of the lifeboat and the continued running costs they face. Michaela Ward from Hornsea First Aid Centre received a cheque on behalf of the free community first aid centre in Hornsea Tesco carpark for £100. At a later date HART community transport also received a cheque for £100 from the group of ladies towards the service they provide. The remaining £100 has been donated to the Ukraine appeal.

Reduced cost insulation in the East Riding RESIDENTS in the East Riding are being offered the opportunity to install cavity wall and loft insulation for just £99 to homeowners and private sector tenants.

Heat Insulation Ltd, a family owned, and local company established for 30 years, have gained access to funding to install the cavity wall insulation and loft insulation for just £99 each insulation installed. The funding is via a partnership between ScottishPower, Heat Insulation and East Riding of Yorkshire Council and is limited to a first come, first served basis.

Heat Insulation Ltd deliver insulation measures to thousands of homes in the Hull and East Riding area on behalf of the council, Hull City Council and various housing associations and landlords.

During winter it is essential to keep warm and healthy and making your home more energy-efficient and insulated will help you achieve this.

Due to further partnership working, they are now also able to access funding to insulate rooms in roof spaces

and internal wall insulation providing they fit specific criteria set out in Ofgem guidance. However, this service is NOT eligible for the £99 scheme and is subject to the property and occupant qualifying for this funding.

The first step would be to carry out a technical survey and if your home is suitable then the works are then booked in for install at a mutually convenient time.

Upon completion of cavity wall insulation, you will receive a 25-year CIGA Guarantee.

Oil tank crime prevention advice Whilst cases of oil theft are still low in our area, it is a trend Humberside police officers are monitoring due to rising prices across the country.

Their Rural Task Force have been offering advice to residents who rely on oil as their means of heating and powering their properties.

PC Kevin Jones of the Rural Task Force said: “There have been five reported offences across our region since the start of the year but, as this could be an emerging issue, we are taking a proactive approach by offering advice and support to our rural communities – many of whom will be vulnerable due to either age or reliance on oil.”

Below is some crime prevention advice, but please note that any security measures must be done in consultation with your

heating oil tank supplier.

• Regularly check your fuel levels.

• Speak to your supplier with regards to a more frequent but smaller delivery to keep your levels low.

• Consider installing a sensor that is monitored from inside the home.

• Consider installing a remote electronic oil level gauge that can set off an alarm if the oil level in the tank suddenly drops below a specific level.

• Consider the boundary security around your property – additional fencing; defensive planting of shrubs and bushes provides an effective and decorative barrier; secure your gates • Hide your oil: Conceal your tank with fencing, camouflage with plants and hedges to reduce the visibility from the roadside

• Consider dusk to dawn security lighting to increase the visibility around your property • Consider CCTV installation around your property and oil tank as a crime prevention and detection measure.

• If you have a steel tank, consider fitting a highsecurity padlock.

• Report any suspicious vehicles or persons to police on 101, on 999 for incidents in progress, together with vehicle registration, make, model, person descriptions and What 3 Words location if possible.

Households urged to set up council tax direct debit to receive £150 energy rebate THE GOVERNMENT has announced a package of support to help households with rising energy bills, worth £9.1 billion in 2022-23. This includes a £150 council tax rebate payment for most households that are liable for council tax in bands A to D in England.

For households who pay their council tax by direct debit where East Riding of Yorkshire Council has received a recent payment by this method, the £150 can be paid directly into their bank accounts. Approximately 100,000 East Riding residents pay by direct debit so payment will be made to those residents in April.

Councillor John Holtby, deputy leader of East Riding

of Yorkshire Council with responsibility for corporate services, said: “We are urging households who do not pay by direct debit to set one up today, this is the simplest and easiest way to allow the council to pay your £150 council tax energy rebate. To set up a direct debit online you will need your council tax account number. If you do not have this to hand you will receive your new 2022/23 bill shortly which contains this information. Set up your direct debit at www.eastriding.gov.uk/ctdd.

“If you do not set up a direct debit, the council will contact you in April requesting that you complete an application form.”

Councils will also be provided with funding to help households who need support but are not eligible for the council tax rebate.

The details of this scheme will be published once the council has received detailed guidance from the government.

Please note that due to increased demand on the council tax service due to administering many government grants and annual billing, the team are unable to take calls at present relating to this matter.

Hornsea choir sings again By June Barton THE HORNSEA Choir has been silent for far too long and so with spring now well and truly sprung, the choir has decided to emerge from hibernation and fill the air with song once again. To get things off on the right

footing their Annual General Meeting will take place on Saturday, April 2 at 2pm in the Hornsea United Reformed Church to elect new officials. Once the business is concluded refreshments will be served

Diary of a Hornsea girl

By Rob Andrew WITHOUT doubt this column may on the odd occasion mention that as children, three of them to be fair, they were all introduced to the joys of eating out from what I consider to be a particularly young age. Usually from the age of two when venturing abroad and certainly from the age of three when at home. Luigi's/Carlo's was our dining experience of choice when in Hornsea, whereas New Garden Chinese restaurant on Anlaby Road was normally where we would enjoy our lunch out when in Hull. Now as we know the idea of this column is to follow the early life of Granddaughter Alexandra provided I'm still around when she reaches the ripe old age of 18, when she may quite rightly ask us not to follow her progress any longer. Sometimes, quite unavoidably, we need to mention mother Deb, who by the way is happily expecting a little girl as a playmate for her first.

Anyway the scene seems to be set for Alexandra's first family meal out at Med Mex. For the purpose of this I must remind everyone that one of Debbie's earliest memories is of

having to share a full three course adult meal at the ripe old age of three. Strops were the order of the day, 'why can't I have my own' I'm reminded of this frequently to this day!

So as is Grandad's prerogative the decision was made for our not so little one to enjoy her first 'Mocktail', a delightful looking and tasty strawberry daiquiri in an adult glass all pink and girly with sugar to lick from around the rim. I don't know if we should have expected anything different, but somehow she found that a piece of artificial plastic fruit, a pear, provided the ideal drinking vessel, squeezing it first before putting it into the sugary concoction to suck it up into the aforementioned receptacle and squirting, not always too accurately, into her mouth. This is whilst enjoying her very own bowl of spaghetti bolognaise, obviously eaten by hand, without the benefit of cutlery.

So it is the preference at the young Fox household not for toddler cups or bottles but a piece of artificial fruit!

By Adrian Moran Hornsea Museum is very pleased to announce that it will be opening again for the 2022 season on Saturday, April 2.

The museum includes a Victorian house, farming items and workshops, a scale model of the former station and moving trains, a historic schoolroom and the largest collection of Hornsea pottery. It has a large garden with play areas and where people can bring their picnics. The shop sells a range of items, including replica old toys.

The museum will be open every weekday from 10am to 4pm, and 1pm to 4pm on Sundays, with the last entry being one hour before closing.

Prices this year are £5 for adults, £3 for children (under 5s are free), and £15 for a family of two adults and up to three children.

Tours for groups and school children can be arranged.

Photo Exhibition Over four days over the Easter Bank Holiday from Friday, April 15 to Monday, April 18 visitors to the museum will also be able to view an amazing art and wildlife photographic exhibition and sale by museum volunteer and local photographer David Hobson. The exhibition includes stunning photographs of wildlife and landscapes taken around East Yorkshire along with some exotic wildlife and artistic compositions.

There will also be some of David's remarkable action shots of the

local Hornsea surfers.

As well as the Stitch in Time needlecraft group that meets every Tuesday in the Museum, events will be organised for various dates over the summer. This will include one for the Jubilee. More details will be published soon. There will also be children’s craft workshops on Thursdays during the school holidays, but more volunteers to help with these are needed, so if you can help with any craft, please get in touch.

The Museum also needs more volunteers for various aspects of running the museum, both for admission and in the shop as well as behind the scenes.

WORLD Book Day was celebrated in March on a day that is marked in more than 100 countries around the world, with 2022 being the 25th year of celebrations.

Locally children from primary schools took part in the literary event designed to encourage a love of books. Here are some of the pictures of them celebrating.

Hello and welcome to and from all members of Hornsea and District u3a By Chairman, Jane Hardman It’s April again already. It’s two years since I became Chair of Hornsea and District u3a and what a strange two years that has been. It is nearly two years since I began writing this column in the Community News and from having not-a-lot to write about because nothing much was going on, we are now back to being as busy as we were before.

The members of the u3a are taking full advantage again of all our organisation has to offer. We have a meeting on the first Tuesday of each month with a speaker and, of course, refreshments. All members can attend this meeting in the Floral Hall. We open our doors at 10am and start the meeting proper at 10.30am.

Not only do members have the opportunity to come to this meeting, there are a variety of groups run by members to explore their interests more fully. Some are held in people’s homes, others in cafes and halls, depending on the size of the group and the members’ preferences. Always care is taken to keep each other safe and to be inclusive.

If you no longer work full time or are retired, please come along to the Floral Hall on Tuesday April 5th at 10am we are having a social meeting for all members and to enable them to see what all the groups have to offer. There is no fee for your first visit.

This is the start of our new year and our subs of £15 are due, for those who are already members. This covers the whole year and includes the monthly meeting for which there is no charge, the opportunity to meet other like-minded people, and to take up a new hobby or interest. You may be an enthusiast about something yourself and would like to share your expertise with others, or you may just want to participate in what is already on offer. It would be great to see you.

At the meeting in March the speaker was Dr David Smith who talked about Yorkshire Butterflies and Climate Change. The latter is a particularly “hot” topic at the moment but who would have thought that Yorkshire butterflies could be an indicator?

Dr Smith is a senior lecturer in Psychology at Hull University.

Previously he has worked at the universities of California, San Diego (UCSD), Sussex and Cambridge. His research interests include visual and auditory perception and he has a keen interest in philosophy, history and artificial intelligence.

David has a keen interest in butterflies and was Butterfly Conservation County Recorder for Yorkshire from 2013-2021 as well as co-ordinating other lepidopterist groups. With the aid of graphs and statistics, David showed how butterflies demonstrate the effects of climate change: some butterflies flourished as temperatures rose, whereas there has been a decline in those that prefer a more temperate climate. Other facts emerged such as some butterflies actually hibernate for the winter, emerging as the weather gets warmer.

It would be interesting to see what butterflies appear in your garden this year We ought to have a competition to see who spots the first butterfly of the year!

The meeting at The Floral Hall in May is called The Gong Space: what? I hear you say. Come along and find out what it’s all about, having first come on April 5th to join us or renew membership.

The next monthly meeting is on Tuesday, April 5 at 10am in the Floral Hall.

Hornsea NCI update By Andrew Garvey BRITISH Summertime approaches, which hales the arrival of the warmth of spring and summer. NCI Hornsea will be introducing a revised watch schedule effective from Monday, April 4. From that date the hours the station is operational will be extended to 9.30am until 5.30pm daily.

Over the winter period, we have been successful in recruiting new watchkeepers and their training programme is now in full swing and progressing very well. Thanks to those who have volunteered, but we continue to recruit so if you have an interest in volunteering, please pop into the station to obtain more information about this interesting and challenging role.

I am sure that everyone is looking forward to a busy summer, and to

remind readers that following a “safety first” approach when visiting the coast is essential. This includes being aware of the sea state and the important time of high tides.

This is especially so if you are walking the beaches both north and south of the town if you are to avoid being cut off and stranded by incoming tides.

On Thursday, March 10, we were privileged to meet up with Justin Kenna as he passed the station on his charity walk on behalf of the DEC appeal for the Ukraine. He was walking along the Yorkshire coastline from Spurn to Ravenscar in six days. He has embarked on the walk not having undertaken any training!! So he said it may take a little longer!! NCI Hornsea recently received a further contribution from the Hornsea Foundation. The funds were raised throughout February from their weekly quiz night held at the New Inn in Hornsea Market Place. This recent donation also includes funds raised in the Foundations recent prize draw. The cheque to the value of £546 was presented to our fundraising team on Tuesday, March 1. This is the second occasion that we have been the beneficiaries from the Foundation and we are grateful for their valued support. A very big thanks to Sid and his team, and to all those who join in the quiz.

Hornsea WI welcome Times bestselling author HORNSEA WI welcomed Sunday Times bestselling author David Mark as the March speaker. The group opened this meeting to the public and had excellent attendance to hear David’s talk about his life in journalism followed by his journey to become an author and his mental health battles along the way.

The next meeting takes place on Monday, April 11 at Hornsea Methodist Church with arrival from 7.15pm to start at 7.30pm. We welcome Women’s Aid Hull talking about being the sole provider of safe and secure refuge accommodation on the north bank of the Humber for women and children fleeing domestic abuse. Also their work to raise awareness of all forms of domestic abuse.

New members are welcome to come alomg to the meeting – annual subscriptions are £44 or you can come and see if the WI is right for you by paying £3 to be a visitor. It’s a special year for Hornsea WI as we celebrate our Ruby anniversary in October with a members only evening with costume historian Meredith Towne as well as a fun filled programme for the year.

The Hornsea WI yard sale will this year take place on Saturday April 30. This year the profit from stall fees and the tombola will be split with Hornsea Amateur Theatrical Society (HATS). Forms to book a stall are available by e-mailing Hornsea WI (e-mail below) or by calling in for one

Where have all the supporters gone?

By June Barton BACK IN 2016 when our Cottage Hospital Minor Injuries Unit was threatened with closure, hundreds of people came out to demonstrate their support in opposition to the plans.

Although we did not win, it is the League of Friends who constantly badger the Health Authority as to the needs for our community. A group of volunteers was soon formed to open and equip the First Aid Centre in Hornsea Tesco’s car park. These volunteers are wonderful and we, the League, support them; but we also feel it is disgraceful that a town the size of Hornsea and ever expanding, should have to rely on a group of volunteers as our first port of call with regard to minor injuries. Surely we deserve better? Who will come and join us?

This is just one item on our agenda along with improved

services and clinics. The League’s committee has dwindled lately, mainly due to age and infirmity so we are in need of fresh blood with fresh ideas. If you are really keen to help retain vital health services in our town we would love to meet you.

Our Annual General Meeting will be on Thursday, May 26 in Hornsea Town Hall at 7pm, but you don’t have to wait until then to join, please contact the Secretary on 01964 534039. The town motto is Happy Healthy Hornsea. Let’s keep it that way!

Hornsea Mermaids sea swimming group celebrate first birthday ON MARCH 8 Hornsea Mermaids sea swimming group celebrated their first birthday with a dip in the sea on what turned out to be one of the coldest days of the month. Claire Keable set up the Hornsea Mermaids group on Facebook after putting out a message to see if anyone would be interested in sea swimming. Claire received over 50 messages of interest and the Hornsea Mermaids were created. A year on the group has over 900 members all swimming at various times in the day throughout the week.

It was apt that the group celebrated their birthday on International Women’s Day. They were joined by Hornsea Inshore Rescue who they regularly raise money for. The birthday event was no different raising over £300 for the local lifeboat charity.

HART resumes its day trips and celebrates the Platinum Jubilee! HUG update – snowdrops for the Queen and plant thefts

By Councillor June Greensmith, Chair of HUG AT THE end of February HUG (Hornsea Urban Gardeners) volunteers planted over 2000 ‘in the green snowdrops’ to the Southgate entrance of the Hornsea to Southport Trans Pennine Trail, lead by myself.

The snowdrop’s have been planted as a lasting memory of Queen Elizabeth’s 70 years as a British Monarch and as part of Hornsea’s Jubilee celebrations.

Six volunteers helped with the digging and planting and it didn’t take too long to establish what will be a beautiful carpet of white popping up year after year as a constant reminder of our Queen.

Hornsea Mayor Councillor Tim Bunch and Deputy Mayor Councillor Steve Prescott kindly gave a very generous donation towards the cost of the bulbs.

Local resident, Catherine Harman wrote this Lovely analogy: “Snowdrops are such delicate looking little flowers with their thin stems and soft heads, yet year after year they push up through snow and ice in order to put on their stunning display.

Now that takes real strength “.

Just like our Queen.

On a sadder note ‘The Hornsea Plant Thief’ is back. A beautiful three year old Lace Cap Hydrangea has been taken from the Newbegin Bus Shelter. All HUG shrubs are either grown from cuttings or donated by residents, so these thefts are directly from the local community.

It saddens me that this is happening season after season.

The person/persons who is doing this, knows their stuff and are clearly targeting specific plants.

As we move towards this year’s bedding planting season I’m asking everyone in Hornsea to keep watch on all plots, both Hornsea Town Council, ERYC and HUG. If you see any suspicious activity please contact me on 07713 476608. The last thing we need this year is gaps in displays, especially those that are being put together in celebration and recognition of our Queen’s 70 years of service to her Country.

General maintenance continues month after month with constant updating and improving of plots for the enjoyment of all who love Hornsea.

CHARITY EVENT IN HATFIELD A CHARITY event is taking place called ‘Fred Fest’ on Saturday, April 9 at Clapham Holme Granary Barn in Hatfield, near Hornsea.

‘Hoedown’ at Hornsea’s Floral Hall this June TICKETS are now on sale for Hornsea Ceilidh Band’s first public Ceilidh – a traditional dance party with live music and a caller.

The dance is set to take place on Saturday, June 11 at the Hornsea Floral Hall. Doors open at 7pm and dancing starts at 7.30pm, with the bar open from 7pm to 10.30pm. Tickets are £10 each (no concessions) and include a pie and pea supper.

All proceeds, after costs, will go to our local independent lifeboat charity, Hornsea Inshore Rescue.

Hornsea Ceilidh Band leader Alison Riley says: “Ceilidhs are great fun – the music is lively and gets your feet tapping. It’s traditional British dance music so the tunes are jigs, polkas, reels and waltzes.

“The caller explains the steps before each dance, so if it’s your first time at a Ceilidh there’s no need to panic, the dances are easy to pick up.

“Ceilidhs are social dances so whether you come on your own, in a couple or a group, we will get you dancing in groups of squares, lines and circles!”

There’s no dress code but flat shoes are recommended for dancing in.

By Graeme Appleton THESE last two years have been really difficult for everyone and for understandable reasons it has meant that we have not been able to run Hornsea Music Festival in 2020 and 2021.

This year, we are thrilled to announce the return of the Festival!

For those unfamiliar, this is not the next instalment in a Hollywood blockbuster, (though there will no doubt be tension, drama and joy involved), but the return of the Hornsea Music Festival running from Wednesday, July 6 to Saturday, July 9.

It takes place at locations across Hornsea including the United Reformed Church on the corner of Cliff Road and New Road.

Although there is a competitive element, there is so much for budding and experienced performers alike to gain from giving their best to an audience. Everyone who does get up to sing and play is already a winner.

Amongst the audiences will be our two wonderful and experienced adjudicators, who whilst marking performances, are there to offer guidance and encouragement. We look forward to welcoming back Stanley Roocroft MBE, who has 45 years experience in adjudicating music festivals around the country, and nearly 30 years experience conducting choral groups in North Yorkshire. This experience shows itself in supportive words to every performer he hears, each of whom benefits from his knowledge and skill.

We are also very excited to be welcoming Iona Zuiderwijk for the first time. Iona is a violin and harpsichord graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, who has coached the National Children’s Orchestra and is a teacher trainer and Trinity Music Examiner. She also brings a wealth of experience to our Festival and I am sure performers will learn a great deal from her.

But, having said all that, what kinds of performers am I talking about? It may be easier to list the performers I’m not talking about such is the breadth

of musical groups, (or classes), welcomed.

If you are a singer of any age, you take part in solo or choir classes from operatic solos to songs from musicals to Gospel choirs and Barber Shop Quartets.

All manner of string instruments and ensembles are catered for along with pianos, brass, woodwind, guitar and percussion and even orchestras! Harps and double basses are also welcome, the more the merrier.

All ages and experience levels are accommodated, individuals or groups and teachers can enter pupils and school ensembles, a fantastic opportunity for young musicians.

We would love to have as many and as varied entries as possible.

Nobody who wants to get up and perform on their own or in a group should feel as though they are too young, too old, or not good enough, we just want to hear you and for you to enjoy performing.

The syllabus which shows the different categories of singers and instrumentalists can be found at our revamped website www.hornseamusicfestival .org.uk.

Most importantly for entrants, the last date for entries is Saturday 16th April 2022.

We will look forward to seeing you between Wednesday, July 6 and Saturday, July 9 for a feast of musical treats at the return of the Festival.

(Though not a Hollywood sequel, musical caped crusaders are also welcome!)

THE TECHNICAL issues that blighted the selection process in this year’s Ferens Open have thankfully receded, and now that the dust has settled and elation has given way to disappointment and vice versa, it is perhaps time to evaluate the successes of Hornsea Art Society members in this year’s exhibition.

Nine members have had work selected this year, amounting to a total of 14 pieces of artwork, in what is generally recognised as being the most prestigious open exhibition in the area

at the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull.

Two of our best exponents of watercolours, Pam Williams and Peter Robinson, each had two pieces chosen: Peter’s distinctive ‘Salt’s Mill, Saltaire’ and ‘Urban Hull’; and Pam’s ‘Race to the finish’ and ‘High tide, Hornsea’, both of which have been sold. No change there then! Steve Truelove got off to a flying start when one of his two accepted entries, ‘La Donna Alta’, a wire and mixed media sculpture, sold at the preview evening for £450.

Also selected was ‘The Watcher’, a mixed media wall-mounted assemblage.

Weighing in with two impressive entries of an entirely different nature was Jude Howe with her beautiful fused glass creations ‘New Wave’ and ‘Precious Heritage’. Three more artists impressed the judges with their acrylic offerings: Kate Gendle with her strikingly graphic ‘Still life with potted plant’; Blanche Lee’s tongue-in-cheek ‘Holiday venue 2021’; and Phil Hargreaves with his Dalby forest inspired semiabstract ‘Logpile’. Hornsea Music Society half season draws to a close: Now the fundraisers begin!

It isn’t long since we were talking about whether it was safe to hold concerts, and now the Hornsea Music Society half season is over. Two favourite performers, Hana Drábková on oboe and Graziana Presicce on piano rounded things off nicely with a varied programme of works by familiar composers like Elgar and Schumann, with a good smattering of lesser known works. A highlight was a selection of songs by local composer Dawn Walters. Dawn’s settings of Shakespeare’s sonnets transferred very nicely to the oboe, and provided an elegant link into the beginning of the summer fundraising season.

The first of these concerts takes place on Shakespeare’s birthday, and takes Shakespeare’s works as the theme. Music will be performed by Pam Waddington Muse (mezzo soprano) and Peter Sproston (piano),

and there will be some readings performed by Fiona Skerrow and Theodore Loades. The proceeds will go towards subsidising next winter’s season of concerts.

The concert will be at the United Reformed Church Saturday, April 23 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 each, and are available from The Town House, Newbegin, Hornsea, or from Roberta Loades on 07816 863222.

Accompanied children are admitted free.

pleased to welcome Larry Malkin to our ranks at the end of last year and it is no surprise to see his ‘Green Spurn’ along with ‘Arctic Corsair on Fishbox Handle’ the former having already sold. Last but by no means least, Phil Ramsdale made the frame with what must be one of his smallest creations, his etching ‘Beverley Town Hall NSW’.

I have to say that I think this year’s exhibition is one of the best ever.

Hornsea Art Society launch Art Festival programme HORNSEA Art Society have launched the Hornsea Art Festival 2022 programme.

Chairman of Hornsea Art Society, Phil Hargreaves, said: “We have another exciting programme of events for you this year and I must make special mention of Ed Harker, our urban sketcher, who is making the trip all the way from Bath to be with us. He is joined by a number of awardwinning artists, and local favourite Phil White will be leading the Four Hour Challenge this year. Everything from fused glass and sculpture, to portraits, landscapes and textile art.”

Programme: James McGairy - The Yorkshire Coast , Saturday 9th April, Catholic Church Hall, Hornsea 10am - 3pm, £30 James has worked as an artist in Guisborough, since 1991, responding to his environment, creating paintings to celebrate our landscape. James aims to convey a sense of place, by conjuring with paint. A workshop exploring acrylic paint, a forgiving and versatile medium. There will be some demonstrations, but mostly a ’hands on’ painting experience. Focusing on the coastal landscape and considering depth, tonal range and texture. Numbers limited to 15.

Tom Wood – Birds from figurative to abstract, Saturday 30th April, Catholic Church Hall, Hornsea 10am - 3pm, £30 During the session Tom will demonstrate the way he constructs his incredibly colourful and imaginative paintings.

Beginning with collage, applying random areas of colour and textures with various brushes, rollers and stencils he builds up multiple layers to reveal the final image.

This workshop will coincide with his one man show of new work at Gallery 49 in Bridlington which begins in April. Numbers limited to 15.

Jude Howe – Fused glass, Saturdays 7th & 14th May, Catholic Church Hall, Hornsea 10am - 1pm, £35 Two identical workshops, six participants to each session, that will give a short introduction to the principles of glass fusing and instruction in glass cutting. The ‘tack fusing’ method is used. A range of glass is provided for participants to design and build their own hanging and/or flat pieces in geometric or abstract designs.

Work is taken to be fired in Jude’s kiln and arrangements made for collection at a later date. Numbers limited to six for each session.

Belinda Hazlerigg - Atmospheric Landscapes, Saturday 21st May, Catholic Church Hall, Hornsea 10am 3pm £35 In this workshop, you will be exploring a range of mark making processes with acrylic paint and mixed media applied with palette knife, brush and rag. After a short illustrated talk, supported by sketchbooks and paintings, and a demonstration, you will produce a range of expressive visual compositions on paper which will support your final piece of semi-abstract work on canvas. Numbers limited to 15.

Block 1 will print a monoprint background.

Block 2 will be cut away to produce our main image. Artwork can be either black and white or full colour. Two lino blocks will be supplied to each participant, who will create a 4 x 6 inch image which will finally be printed onto 10x8 inch paper.

Unlike normal linocut printing this will achieve results more akin to monoprinting, making each print unique. All materials will be supplied. Numbers limited to12.

Primary school pupils focus on peace through art 1

PUPILS at Hornsea 4 Community Primary School have created a peace wall. This was an idea by head teacher Mrs Whitehead after some children had asked questions about the war in the Ukraine.

The school decided to focus on the concept of peace and each class has created a piece of artwork to represent this for the display. It was left to teachers to decide how their class could contribute resulting in a addition of some handwriting quotes to be added. Art with a Heart ART with a Heart are a group of local artists who meet each Tuesday morning at the Catholic Church Hall on Football Green in Hornsea to practice their craft in a social atmosphere and hopefully learn a little each week.

Recently we were delighted to welcome back Theresa Halls who was a founder member of our group and helped set us up many years ago and is always helpful and encouraging in her manner.

Starting soon we are pleased to have Phil Hargreaves returning and this time we will be trying out oil painting, a new venture for most of us.

During January we had a successful exhibition at the Seagull Gallery at Hornsea Bowling Club and currently have a new exhibition at Hornsea Freeport in the Pottery Painting Studio. We hope to have lots of visitors to view and possibly buy some of our paintings while enjoying refreshments in the Pottery Painting Studio tea rooms and maybe trying a hand at painting a piece of pottery from the large selection available.

There will be clues to find, tokens to receive and an activity to collect at each part of the story - which makes this an ideal family activity.

Each participating 'family' will be given a bag in which to collect their 'treasures', along with a gift from Christian's Together in Hornsea.

All the churches will be open during the Trail - offering more interest to the morning.

Reflection of the month – Christian’s Together Hornsea

By Reverend Tina Minett Stevens WHEN I was asked to write the Easter reflection for this paper, little did any of us know that there would be a war in Ukraine. As I write, we are in the fourth week of hostilities.

I have no idea what will be happening when the paper is published. My hope and prayer is that peace and diplomacy will have replaced the bombing and fighting.

And there are already those who are suggesting that it is God’s judgment of the people of Ukraine.

Yes, there are church leaders in Russia saying that the war is just because some Christians in Ukraine have adopted a ‘western’ lifestyle – by which they mean they are not the right kind of Christians – and the war is God’s judgement on them. It is, frankly, an appalling lie. It is no reason for war. No reason to kill children, women or men. No reason to bring chaos and fear to millions of people.

So although they – and I – believe in the same God, share the same

Bible and so much more, the Christians in Ukraine are being condemned, judged, for living differently than other Christians nearby.

But this is sadly nothing new.

Jesus was born and raised within the Jewish faith. We know that he was criticised by the religious leaders of his day for doing things differently: his friends did not fast, or keep other rules set down for righteous living – it was scandalous!

Jesus himself healed people on the Sabbath - how very dare he!

We can see the same logic at work amongst those who are shaming, judging, the Ukrainian Christians for being different in how they live out their faith.

We see it too, sadly, to some extent here in the UK. There are some who stand in judgement on any Christian denomination or church that is not their own. They declare some to be not ‘proper’ Christians because they either do or

do not do something. Be it christening babies, singing modern songs, the length of the sermon or wearing odd clothing (vestments) these are just a few of the things Christians use to judge one another.

But then I look to the cross on which Jesus died to save all humanity from our sins. The cross that makes no distinction: Christ died once for all, for everyone, as it says in the Bible.

In dying, Jesus makes it possible for human beings to enjoy a close relationship with God now and live a full life with others. Jesus died because of God’s love for us all.

I read of the empty tomb on Easter Day, and see that death itself has been defeated: it was never God’s intention for his good creation.

In rising from the dead, Jesus shows us that like him, we all continue to exist beyond our mortal life. Death is not a full stop, just a

pause in our journey: so where are you going?

After living on earth for some days, meeting his friends and eating with them, Jesus finally left the earth, for now at least. In returning to God, Jesus shows us that we too have a home as God’s adopted children.

The promise is that one day Jesus will return and re-create the earth as the place where they all can live in love and peace with one another and with God. In this world there are really only two kinds of people: those who trust in God, in all that Jesus has done, and those who do not. And it is those who seek to live life without God who often condemn those of us who do trust in God. And yes, it is true: we are an easy target. Since we live by faith, there are times our lives fail to live up to the perfect life of Jesus. But that is the point: we do not claim to be morally good or perfectly virtuous:

we know we are not! We acknowledge our weakness and trust in God to help us grow to be more like Jesus. Being a Christian is a journey, not a destination.

Again it is easy to blame God for all that is wrong in the world: for wars, the changing weather patterns causing floods and famines and so on. But can we honestly say we are doing what we can to help our world be more sustainable? Or are we blaming God to deflect us from our own responsibility to do the right thing?

This Eastertime, the Christians of Hornsea, Ukraine, Russia and worldwide will all be celebrating the good news that Jesus is risen, and you are invited to join us.

We, the churches in Hornsea and the villages all celebrate differently: some of us are more formal, others less so: but you can be sure of a warm welcome in Christ’s name whichever you choose.

Plastic Free Hornsea Group and friends - update

by Beachcomber “March winds and April showers Bring forth May flowers” ….. … so says the 16th century poem of indeterminate origin. As you read this, the clocks will be going forward to British Summer time and lighter nights will draw us outside.

This is a good time of year to be thinking about building a bug hotel (or hostel, or mansion, depending on your ambition!). As the daytime temperature rises consistently to over 10°C the overwintering bugs will have emerged.

When you are clearing your garden, you can set aside any suitable dead and dry twigs for use in the construction.

Old bamboo canes can be cut into shorter lengths for little creatures to crawl into. Other hollow-stemmed plants, such as Himalayan Honeysuckle (Leycesteria Formosa) provide ideal material too. Broken terracotta pots, bricks with holes or part bricks, in fact anything that can provide a safe, secure space in the winter can be utilised. A simple construction could just be an empty food can with its lid removed. Stuff it with cut lengths of bamboo or plant stems bundled together so it is tightly packed, and then wrap some stout string around the can and hang it

horizontally in a sheltered place in the garden. You could group multiple cans together filled with different materials, such as wood shavings (no glue or paint on them), pine cones or moss.

Different materials will attract different species. And if you’re feeling really ambitious and have the space, a stack of small sized pallets could be built up, layer by layer using the aforementioned materials plus terracotta pieces, brick bits and plumbing pipe off cuts if you can scrounge any. Gaps can be filled with moss from the lawn, pine cones and any other dried natural plant material. The completed construction should be secured together as a unit using stout string or rope. Children and grandchildren will love to get involved in this project. Lots of different ideas are available on the internet to suit differing skill levels and what available space you have, so take a look and the environment will love you for it!

The Eco Hub beach hut will be open for two additional sessions in the Easter school holidays.

Save the dates: Wednesday, April 13 and Wednesday, April 20, both 10am 2pm. We are open each Sunday as usual between those hours. We have had some fantastic sessions recently,

too many to mention but the children are loving the litter picking/beach cleaning and the grown-ups like the adventure too. And it’s free!

The collection of used and empty tablet blister packs continues to be very successful. Can we just, however, issue a gentle reminder that it is only these items (pictured) that are accepted by the recycling company.

CLiPS - Community and Litter Picking Services We have done two major roadside cleans outside of Hornsea this month removing over 20kg of rubbish in the

process. This is in addition to the regular daily local litter picks that are good for removing little and often. A difficult supermarket trolley extraction from Stream Dyke was successfully executed, and the trolley was returned to the owners undamaged but in need of a wash.

We still have some unclaimed items that have been found. If you recognise any of these as yours, please message our Facebook page or contact this newspaper.

Some gardening work has begun in the little areas we care for, and by the time you read this some seasonal tidying will have started on the Hornsea Rail Trail once the hibernation period is over.

NICE, BUT NAUGHTY (The miseducation of Bo)

by Karen Whitchurch aIn recent months, I have developed impressive superpowers such as pin-sharp hearing, enhanced peripheral vision and lightning reflexes.

Like my fearsome year one teacher, I can pick up on rebellion, villainy and illicit chewing without turning around, all thanks to Bo, my force of nature puppy, whose energy could power the whole of Yorkshire.

Despite three hours of daily exercise, he’s a one-dog demolition force. Put it down and he’ll have it. Leave it dangling, it’ll be gone (no more the tea-towels, ovengloves, scourers, washing-up brushes and dishcloths.) If it’s not nailed down, it’s fair game, and if it is, he’ll pinch the nails. There is nothing he won’t eat, shred or mangle.

Wave a lemon or an onion at a normal dog, and he’ll run for the hills. Not so Bo, for whom everything is either a gastronomic possibility or a potential plaything.

He is the embodiment of puppyhood: mischievous, curious, adventurous and spirited. If I were a better person, I would love to add… ’and I wouldn’t change a thing.’ However!... nothing is beyond his reach: shopping bags (of which, more later) sinks, cupboards, drawers, worktops, windowsills, curtains, even light switches.

We recently spent a tense twenty minutes searching for the kitchen dimmer-knob, only to find it buried in his bed, an inedible trophy. Deprive him of one thing and he’ll seek out another. Following the cookery-books debaclé,, of which we don’t speak, he moved on to skirting boards, doors and the dining suite.(NOTE TO READERS: honourable mention here for the manufacturers of Chew Stopper, whatever’s in it, for saving our woodwork, and possibly our marriage.)

However, following Bo’s timely revenge raid, RIP the deterrent water-pistol that wasn’t.

Persistent little sod! That’s him. And it’s taken me a while to realise that his studied innocence is anything but: he is actually busy mind-mapping potential targets and saving them for later. Hence: ‘ooh, newspaper get dat.’ Twenty minutes later (rubbing paws

together) ‘still dere, heehee’.

One hour later: ‘wheee!whooo!gottit!shreddie s!’

I can sort of understand Bo’s obsession with accessible food. Bred as a gun-dog, growing up in a farmyard and warring with nine litter-mates has taught him essential life-skills.

Etiquette and considerate behaviour won’t win the battle for survival, but speed and stealth just might.

Back to those shoppingbags, there they are, parked on the worktop while I go in to greet the husband and take my coat off. Two minutes is all it takes for a potentially deadly rummage. Just two minutes to root out (without disturbing the carriers or their other contents) the three small packets of sultanas, rip them open, and gobble down 300g. Could he have chosen anything more lethal? Dried fruit is incredibly toxic to

dogs’ kidneys, hence an emergency trip for an emetic injection. The vet did say that the result was quite spectacular, like an explosion in a Christmas cake factory.

As for Bo, was he bothered?

Still, it wasn’t my finest hour, entirely my fault for putting him through it, and a lesson was learned.

So for now, I’m taking no chances until my little sneakthief mends his ways. Maybe he never will, in which case it will be my job to protect him.

But one day, when he’s too old and stiff to misbehave, I know I will wish that mischievous puppy back in a heartbeat..

Alberta Canada – Part 5 An RAF Ghost Story by David Everard David lives in Hornsea with his wife Noelle. We will share a chapter of the book he has written each month so please save this page, there are five chapters in total. This is chapter two which is split into two.

Although the story is fictitious a large percentage is based on fact including the area, dates and times of where the aircraft and crew were stationed. The destination of their mission, the crash site, statistics of the raid on Leipzig are also true and can be seen and verified at The Yorkshire Air Museum in Elvington near York.

Names, nationalities and aircraft numbers have been changed to protect those who feel they may need it.

CHAPTER THREE - I KNEW THAT FACE (part 1) I arrived home to total darkness and found the house key in its usual hiding place. I let myself in and sat in the kitchen. The silence of the house allowed me to digest the true horrors these poor young men had had to endure. I found it so difficult to understand and believe that a pact sworn on the Bible could be taken so literally. That God Himself had left them in damnation for Over fifty years on account of it. I didn't know if I believed in God. The truth was I hadn't given it much thought. Yes, like everyone, I had my own beliefs. We all have at some stage in our lives asked for His help and guidance. To be honest, how many of us truly believe He really listens. I am sure that if we were all absolutely certain that God not only listened, but also requested a day of reckoning of our lives’ accounts, we would be very different people.

I knew from that moment, I was…

I retired to my bed and tried to sleep only to be kept awake by the horrific stories I had been told. Question after question rattled through my brain. I should have asked this, I should have asked that. I buried my head further into my pillow trying to rid their faces from my mind. At some stage I must have slept as I was woken by the telephone at 7am by a customer who had a broken-down compressor. I really wasn't interested and passed it over to my brother. I had more important things to do. I asked Noelle to say to anyone else who rang that i was ill. I tried to explain to Noelle what had happened, but kept it to the bare minimum, as she wasn't that sure of my sanity as it was. I believed this would have really topped it.

I made numerous telephone calls to the radio station before being able to convince anyone there to talk to me. Eventually our local DJ agreed to help, which I have to say he did whole-heartedly. He must have asked the public over the air at least twice a day for nearly a week. But, unfortunately, there was no response. During that same week, I'd contacted the Air Ministry and after a long conversation with a clerk, who had no interest at all in my story. finally agreed to look through their records. He would send me anything they had on Flight Sergeant Fitzpatrick. He didn't sound very convincing, I certainly wasn't going to hold my breath. I decided to take the drive out to the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington, near York, and ask if they had any information on him. They were very helpful and had all the details about the aircrew and the aircraft. Unfortunately, they only told me what I already knew. Their records showed all the crew had been killed.

The statistics of the 19th/20th February raid over Germany made heavy reading indeed. 78 (9.5%) of the 823 aircraft that had gone on the raid to Leipzig were either shot down or had collided en route. 546 airmen were either killed or became prisoners of war.

Some crews I found had crashed just after take off, never even reaching the East Coast of England. As I sat reading these terrible statistics a silent echo of the past seemed to breathe life into the war relics that were housed within the museum room. There was a life size manikin dressed in a full airman's Irvine suit complete with a Mae West and headgear. For a moment I was sure his eyes were watching me. Then I noticed the photographs of airmen that lined the walls. Again, all seemed to be staring at me with faces so young, so full of life and expectations. It was as though they were all trying to help me find Fitz. As l studied the walls lined with these photographs a realisation came to me that most of these young faces were never to reach their twenty-first birthday. I guess that's all I have to say about that. I was starting to feel very desperate as I left the Museum. The memory of Flight Sergeant Fitzpatrick's description was fading into all the other young faces I had seen on the interior walls of the museum. I really needed something positive to take back to the airmen. Something that could give them hope, for that matter, give me hope. Then I remembered the little girl. If I could find her, she might have information.

Hornsea Photography Club report Compiled by Arnold Underwood HORNSEA Photography Club has, in its various guises (Hornsea Camera Club, Leven & Hornsea Photo Group, Hornsea Photo Group, etc), been a member of the Yorkshire Coastal Photographic Group (YCPG) which currently comprises six local Photography Club/Societies from Beverley, Pocklington, Driffield, Bridlington and Hornsea. Several photography competitions, along with other events, are organised annually and the most recent was for the Norman Trophy. This competition is unusual in that it is in two parts with entries being both as prints or DPIs (Digitally Projected Images). Member Clubs are invited to submit five prints and five DPIs to be independently judged.

This year, the judging of the YCPG Norman Trophy was hosted by Wolds Photographic Society in Pocklington on February 15 and HPC was represented there by Arnold Underwood and Scott Senior.

The judge was Grahame Mellanby FRSA, a professional photographer currently based at Frost Studios in Pocklington. He has many years experience working from York, Hessle, and elsewhere, including high-profile commissions such as the photography for a virtual walkthrough tour of the Houses of Parliament. He began the evening by outlining his criteria for judging. He complimented the Clubs on the overall high standard of their entries and as a result he had been stricter with his judging! His five criteria were Impact, image quality, technical ability, and composition.

The final results were very close (just 9 1 points between 1st and 6th place) with F.ocus Photography Group (Bridlington) putting in a strong finish to beat the host club Wolds, by just one point.

The Annual General Meeting of Hornsea Photography Club was scheduled for Thursday, March 3. However for various reasons, only seven members were in attendance. There was discussion of what to include on next year's programme. Suggestions included photographing Emma’s reptiles (postponed from last year), a Back to Basics talk about camera settings, and inviting the Steam Punk people to a photo shoot. However, nothing was set due to the lack of committee members

present. It was decided to arrange a zoom meeting later this month as the Club's AGM. Watch for information on our Facebook page.

New members are always very welcome to our club meetings irrespective of experience or the type of photography you are interested in. Our club Facebook page: HornseaPhotography gives information about our future monthly meetings, member's images and other photo-related discussions. We are a very social club not taking ourselves too seriously and simply enjoy exploring together how we might take better photos. We hope to see you there soon.

1. FROSTY RIVERBANK: Well done Chris Wilkinson for two 19s in the DPI section. The judge's comments on his entries were that a point was lost on Frosty Riverbank on composition - "too much sky".

2. DEER DEER: Scott Senior scored two 18s for his DPIs - the judge said the image of the Four Deer "was gorgeous", but lost points on composition because "the deer at the back was too central".

3. REDSHANK: Our highest scoring print, 18/20, was Redshank by Gregg Simpson. The judge described this print as having "great impact, but for distracting bright spots on the far left which could have been toned down or removed before printing".

Grinding or cracking neck – what is it? Spring Into Fitness with East Riding Leisure

By Graham Janes CREPITUS includes hearing one or a series of noises from our joints when making certain movements; they can include cracking, popping, snapping or grinding. These sounds and sensations can also happen in our necks and are commonly experienced when turning our heads.

Neck Crepitus is usually painless and not classified as serious as long as we do not have any other symptoms (see below).

In our necks we have Facet joints which is where our Vertebrae join together. The smooth surface on the end of each bone is Cartilage and inside each Facet joint we have Synovial fluid which lubricates these joints.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES? Articular Pressure Changes – our Cervical Facet joints contain Synovial fluid which lubricates and protects the smooth cartilage of our adjacent bones. As the joint moves and the adjacent bones rub and articulate with each other, pressure within the joint changes and can cause tiny gas bubbles to form before they collapse back into the fluid. These changes in pressure play a role in some of the cracking noises we hear.

There have been various studies conducted on the purposeful cracking of the synovial joints of our fingers (‘knuckles’) but conclusions in medical literature have been mixed – some believe that the cracking is due to the bubble collapsing (or being popped) whilst others conclude that it is from the bubbles forming.

Moving Tendons – another factor in neck Crepitus is the snapping sound that a ligament makes and/or that of the tendons as they move over our bones and other tissues located in our neck region. Ligaments and tendons have the strong elasticity similar to that of a rubber band but are soft tissue that attach to our bones (ligament = bone to bone and tendon = muscle to bone).

A strong theory supports that as we age, our joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments weaken which will in turn cause a change in their functionality. Other factors that influence how our tendons and ligament’s function and the possible cause of Crepitus are: • Swelling and stiffness • Injury • Overstretching • Spinal degeneration • An unusual or sudden movement • Changes following a surgical procedure Bone on Bone As our bones age, we may start to experience Osteoarthritis (OA) which is when our cartilage wears down and the bone will grind on bone. We stand a higher or accelerated risk of OA if we have been subject to a traumatic injury such as whiplash or a sports-related injury.

Neck Crepitus is then caused by the bones grinding against another bone which can be typically accompanied by pain and limited range of motion. Unlike our knuckles which usually cannot be cracked again for 20 minutes, the grinding and cracking in our necks can usually be repeated

with every movement.

It is very common when we experience Neck Crepitus for the cause of the sounds not to be determined especially if we are not experiencing any pain with them. In most cases the focus will be on finding and treating the cause of the pain rather than finding which mechanism is making it.

IS IT SERIOUS? It is normal for most of us to think that something serious is going on with our Cervical spine when we hear grinding noises in our necks but generally, we do not need to consult a doctor unless it is accompanied by any of the following listed below. That said, if you are worried or unsure about this or any issue, you should consult with your GP at the earliest opportunity.

• Pain or swelling – this could indicate Osteoarthritis or another type of inflammatory process in the joints of our neck • Recent trauma – if you have been involved in a recent traumatic accident such as a car collision or a fall and you start to get new cracking or grinding noises in your neck • Frequent and/or constant – if your Crepitus is constant and you can recreate the same sound with the same movement every time, this may be due to a joint function, especially if accompanied by pain • Recent surgery – it is common to get a new sound that happens after surgery but if these sounds appear a few weeks later it is advisable to get them checked HOW CAN I TREAT IT? The majority of Neck Crepitus cases tend to come from a stiff neck so it is worth treating yourself or getting treatment that is aimed at reducing the tension in the muscles of the neck and shoulders and restore your range of motion of your cervical spine. The most common treatments are: • Heat - use this to help relieve the tension • Massage – at the clinic we use a range of techniques and equipment to relieve the tension usually found in the upper back and neck • Stretching – as part of your treatment, you will also receive a bespoke rehabilitation plan to allow you to regain your range of motion • Strengthening – by making the correct muscles stronger, you will give your neck the support it needs. Again, these will be given on your plan at the clinic • Improve your posture – this is very important especially if you spend a lot of hours at a desk, using a phone or tablet, knit, sew, read, nod off or have rounded shoulders and/or your head goes forward Advice on this or any injury can be discussed by simply getting in touch via phone, email etc with me or Eleanor at the clinic where we will be more than happy to help.

On the bank – Tansterne Fishery

By Ron Bulless BEFORE we move on to match 10 results and league table standings – I thought I would take you through what you should be doing if you have put your gear away for the winter and are looking at fishing again come the spring.

A lot of anglers and this applies to pole anglers as well as those on the rod and reel, put their gear away in the shed for the winter season and then just get it out when the new season starts and this is where the problems start. Line deteriorates as does pole elastics and it is worthwhile spending a couple of hours before the season starts in cleaning your equipment and also replacing various parts.

For those on rod and line – firstly clean the sections of your rod – debris will build up especially around the eyes on the rod and these should not only be cleaned but be checked for breakages and if any eyes are loose and need rebinding and varnishing.

Clean the parts where the sections slot into each other and make sure that all sections will align when put together. Next the line and for me do not mess about just replace it and get decent line that is not too heavy.

The times we go around the pond and see pig tailed line that is too old and will only sit on the water and be dragged all over by the wind.

When putting new line on the spool – put some water with fairy liquid in a bucket and drop the spool into the bucket after attaching it to the reel and threaded through the eyes. Then wind the line onto the spool from the bucket – this will lubricate and help your line sink when fishing – which is what you want – then you are fishing where you want, not where the wind takes you.

On casting your float – as it hits the water drop your rod end to the water and give the reel two quick turns – this will tighten your line and cause it to drop below the surface.

Take time to understand the shot that each of your floats need and weighted wagglers are good as very little shot is needed in addition to the float.

Check your reel to see if it needs oiling or greasing – unwind the handle – grease it and tighten it back up – check the clutch and other parts and oil and grease where necessary.

On the Pole – a soapy water gentle clean especially the top twos and number 3 and 4 sections. I like to candle wax all the ends so they fit together and come apart easily and the section that slots into your top twos needs checking for wear and tear and I add a bit of tape on mine where the carbon has started to show a slight damage – so as to protect it for another season.

Elastics will perish as they have been in and out of the pond water and stretched in all directions – for me it is new elastics into all sections and 11-15 will cover everything but margins for the big fish – so I will have anything up to a 20 for the margin in one top two section.

Hook links again these are very cheap and you will have many rigs on your banders but if these have been wound too tight you will find they have bends and do not sit right in the water – just check them and at least replace the hook links.

Preparation Prevents Poor Performance – those few hours will result in less breakages and more successful catches on the bank and in your net.

Charity Match In remembrance of the anglers who have passed away: Mel, Barry, Arthur, Tom and Big Pete, we will hold a match on their honour We are having a triples drawn charity match on June 12 for anyone who is interested.

You will draw your peg but be married up with two other pegs. Each team will decide who fished for carp, who fishes for silvers and who fishes for both. The combined weight will decide the winners and there will be prizes for biggest individual weights in each category.

The raffle monies and surplus entry money will go to the Friends of Hornsea Hospital who do fantastic work on behalf of people in our community.

New ground maintenance tractor for Hornsea Town AFC

By Stuart Kemp HORNSEA Town AFC have recently taken delivery of a John Deere tractor specifically made for ground maintenance. This was made possible thanks to grants from the East Riding and National Football Associations. Hornsea Town are one of very few clubs in the area who have use of one of these unique tractors. Thanks to the club treasurer and former player Steve Ward, a partner in Coast to Coast Financial Services, who spent a lot of time and effort sorting and finalising grant applications until they were approved. Steve is also busy applying for more machinery grants for a top dresser and a disc oval feeder which would complete the equipment needed to get the clubs football pitch at the Hornsea Recreation Ground usable for all of the playing season.

The club currently play some of the

season’s games at Hornsea School when pitches at ‘The Rec’ are unfit to play on.

Geoff Whitehead is in charge of the recently acquired tractor and spends many hours on it on the pitch. Geoff said: “I can already see the benefits it brings as it spikes, rolls, combs and brushes the pitch all in one movement and this state-of-the-art machinery also has a 60-inch deck mounted under it which enables the grass to be cut at the same time.” Geoff is immensely proud of it and is hoping in the near future to train John and David Topham on how to use it, maintain it and make the pitches at the Hollis Recreation Ground something the town can be proud of. For security purposes the tractor is kept away from the ground although if more secure premises nearer the ground could be found it would be more beneficial.

Both men’s and women’s walking footballer teams in tournament action

By Chris Smith AS THE Community News goes to press both the men’s and women’s teams at the Hornsea Town Walking Football Club are in tournament action.

A mix of under and over sixty year-old male players are in Hull at the Pace Maker’s Spring Tournament 2022. The squad’s entry fee has been generously met by a sponsor who has requested to remain anonymous. The club is immensely grateful for such a kind gesture.

Whereas the women travel to South Yorkshire to play in Sheffield United Striders’ Tournament. The significant development is in securing a sponsor to also meet the squad’s entry fee. The club is extremely grateful to Charlotte Webster, the owner of Top to Toe Nail and Beauty Parlour, for generously sponsoring the women’s tournament. Charlotte commented: “I was very pleased to be approached for the opportunity to sponsor the women’s squad’s entry in such a prestigious walking football tournament.”

Hornsea Cricket Club update SUMMER is on its way and Cricket is back! Saturday, April 23 sees a return to the league fixture programme with 1st and 2nd team matches scheduled to run through to mid-September 2022. There are many exciting developments for the Hornsea Junior Cricket programme too with All Stars, Dynamos and competitive fixtures running alongside weekly coaching sessions - see below details. We look forward to welcoming you all back to the Hollis Recreation Ground for Cricket and refreshments.

Seniors The club has been fortunate enough to arrange a pre-season friendly on April 16, away to near neighbour Brandesburton CC. The 1st X1 are scheduled to commence their Division 2 Holderness campaign on April 23 with an away fixture against Middleton and North Dalton CC. The club remains under the continued leadership of Jon Fisher.

The 2nd team under new leader Mark Brightmore will play in Division 4 Holderness, playing their first game at home to Hull Zingari CC 3rd X1.

Additionally the club will field a team on Thursdays in Division 1 of the Bridlington Evening League under the stewardship of Taylor Wallace.

adults and juniors leading into the Summer season will be organised nearer the end date once outdoor conditions have been determined.

ECB All Stars Programme After four successful years of running All Stars Cricket, Hornsea Cricket Club will be hosting another eight week course this summer for 5-8 year olds.

Entering its second year will be the Dynamos Cricket for 8-11 year olds which will run directly after All Stars on Friday evenings.

Hornsea Sporting Under 8s HORNSEA Sporting Under 8s Blacks began their training in Summer 2021 and came together as strangers but have gelled together in a way that only great teammates could. The team boasts seven regular players, as pictured, who train together with some recent new additions every Tuesday night 5.30pm-6.30pm on the Hornsea 3G pitch.

As they gear up for the new season, the team would like to see some new faces to add to their lively group and join them in regular games, coached by Simon Toovey and Scott Voase. The team are supportive, encouraging and welcoming to players, whether it’s their first-time playing football or they’re already bursting with ball-skills. Although the day was very windy, it was perfectly clear and the cliffs and caves could be seen at their best. Lockington, including St Mary’s church, a grade 1 listed building built by the Normans in 1150 and later extended in the 14th and 18th Century. The walk finished by following the Minster Way across pastures to the road and past Rockingham House, previously The Rockingham Arms inn, named after a racehorse that won the St Leger and whose owner lived at nearby Bishop Burton. After the walk, most of the group enjoyed tea and fat rascals in the tearoom at nearby Hutton Cranswick Garden Centre.

Nine walkers gathered in the village of Melbourne on Sunday, March 13 for a nine and a half mile walk.

Setting off at 10am, their route followed the Pocklington Canal to Bielby passing Thornton and Walbut locks. The sun came out for an elevenses 'pit stop' at Bielby Beck then it was on through the pretty village of Bielby, with its historic little St Giles's Church. A feature of the area is Sundials and the walkers stopped at the Chapel in Bielby to admire the beautiful Sundial made by John Smith in 1838. They reached Everingham at lunchtime and after admiring the lovely properties on the main street, sat near St Everilda's Church for their lunch break. After lunch they reached yet another picturesque village, Seaton Ross, with yet more sundials. The sundial on the wall of Dial Cottage is the largest in the country at 12 feet in diameter.

There is a smaller one above the door on St Edmunds church and a third one at Dial Hall Farm. These are all the work of William Watson in the early 1800s. He was a surveyor, map maker, and landowner who lived at Dial Hall Farm. And so on into Melbourne and the end of the walk with clean boots, which was a pleasant change! On the drive home some members called at the Allerthorpe Lakeside Park cafe for the customary tea and cakes.

Other walks by Club Members: On Saturday, February 26, David and Dave explored the fringes of Dalby Forest around Troutsdale.

David, Margaret walked from Huggate via North Dalton on 12th Feb; and around Holmfirth in 'Last of the Summer Wine Country' on March 7, during a stop-off on their return from a weekend in Blackpool.

February 27 turned out to be a glorious day so Arnold and Caroline took this opportunity to walk from Goodmanham to Londesborough for the snowdrops in the grounds of the original Londesborough Hall, which had been demolished in 1819. By 1800 the Hall was just one of many in the hands of the Dukes of Devonshire. The 6th Duke, having inherited a large debt from his father, and having other expensive interests including the reconstruction of Chatsworth House, had Londesborough Hall demolished. To compensate for this loss, a hunting lodge was built on the estate at a different site.

However in 1845 the Duke sold the entire Londesborough Estate to George Hudson. Hudson was a railway financier and politician known as "The Railway King", and he had his own private station built on the Beverley to York railway line.

But soon, following Hudson's downfall, the Estate was sold again, to politician Albert Denison who enlarged the Hunting Lodge to create a Victorian style country house - the present-day Londesborough Hall.

March 6 was another fine day so the pair ventured further afield to Sinnington on the southern boundary of the North York Moors National Park for a walk via Appleton-le-Moors. Sinnington is a pretty village with some interesting historic buildings, including a 12th century barn that was once part of a Benedictine Nunnery. The banks of the River Seven in Sinnington are adorned with daffodils in the spring.

Hornsea Indoor Bowls Club big wins for a small club HORNSEA Indoor Bowls Club has once again showed that you do not need to be big to be successful.

Over the 2021 / 22 winter season the club has fielded four teams in various men’s county leagues where they played against teams from all over Yorkshire. Two play in the County Over 55’s league where the A team won all its games to triumph in the first division. Two teams also play in the main county (open age). The B team enjoys games in the third division but for the second year in a row the A team won all its games to triumph in the first division.

Hence Hornsea have won Division 1 of both leagues.

This year Hornsea also provided a quarter of the players for the Yorkshire County Over 55’s team which also won all of its matches against neighbouring county teams to win the Midland Counties League. Cliff Holmes, Pete Oliver, Paul Footit. Nick Cleveley, Simon Wright and Mike Watson played in all five games in the series with the latter two earning their County Caps with debut appearances in the team.

National Finals The club also has several members who have won through

regional rounds to gain places at the England Indoor Bowls Association Finals. Holly Chaytor hopes to retain her two ball singles national title and also plays in the Ladies Four Ball Singles. Dave Tooley represents the club in the men’s over singles championship which he won in 2019 and was won by the clubs own Paul Footit in the delayed 2020 finals. Paul meanwhile plays in the Men’s Four’s championship with teammates Cliff Holmes, Pete Oliver and Simon Wright. In the men’s triples Jack Bird, Edward Wright and Matthew Bell play for the club after winning the Hornsea regional final against Cliff Holmes, Pete Oliver and Ian Paddy.

Finally a six man team of younger players have reached the semi-finals of the David Cornwell Under 30’s two rink triples. The team consists of Jack Bird, Holly Chaytor, Matthew Bell, Katy Baxter, Lydia Cutmore and James Baxter with Luke Watson subbing in the qualifying quarter finals.

Jack, Holly, Katy and Matthew were part of the Mixed Fours team that reached the National Finals but were knocked out in the quarter finals stage earlier this month. We wish all the players luck and hope to report some success next month.

However reaching the National Finals is a big achievement in the first place.

Hornsea Promenade Bowls Club 2022 season preview

By Peter Barker WITH THE days getting longer and the weather improving, the club and its members are preparing for the new season on the green down at the Promenade. Members are working on the green, sprucing up the lawns and flower beds and tidying up the clubhouse in preparation for opening of the green on April 16. We will be playing up until early September The last couple of years have seen the Club affected by Covid with a reduced number of games and activities but throughout this Members have managed to keep the club going and enjoyed playing amongst themselves and against other teams when the Leagues were reinstated last year. We had a mixed set of results in the Leagues which saw some teams promoted and others relegated but will be starting this season with a renewed vigour. We have managed to maintain a healthy number of members, and indeed managed to attract several new players. We have met regularly on Wednesday mornings at the Indoor Bowls Club in the closed season and had a couple of well attended Friendly games against other clubs there.

2022 should see us return to some sort of normality with a full agenda of League games, Club

Competitions, Friendly matches and social games. We enter several teams in both the Humberside and Driffield leagues with games on 3 evenings and one afternoon per week throughout the season. We have several internal Club competitions which are enthusiastically contested and enjoyed by the members and suited to all levels of ability. These will start in May. There will also be a few Friendly matches against other clubs, that have not been held in the last couple of years. We are also aiming to trial games of Aussie pairs on Saturday mornings In June we will be holding our Whistle-stop competition, not held for the last two years, where teams of three players from other clubs are invited to play, along with some of our members. This is usually well contested and is a useful fund raiser for the Club, with prize money for the winners.

The club holds an enviable location on the Promenade next to the Floral Hall, and nothing can be more enjoyable on a warm sunny day than to play on the green, or to sit and relax and watch others. The location often attracts people who just want to sit and watch and those who are tempted to play.

Although we cannot manage the

green to be always open to the public, we do have our weekly rollups on Tuesday mornings where those interested are welcome to come along to give the game a try, and indeed many come back and join or just play regularly on these days. These sessions will start on Tuesday, April 19 and are held between 10.30am and 12 noon. To play just turn up around 10.15am, woods will be provided and please wear flat soled shoes. You will be made welcome, and coaching will be provided by Club members The club is wholly run by its members and aims to be fun, social and competitive. We will be holding a coffee morning and signing on day on Saturday, April 2 between 10am and 12 noon in the clubhouse for new and existing members to join, but if you cannot make it do not worry you will be able to join at any other time. Fees are £50 for full members or £10 for social members who will be asked to pay £3 when they play.

Mark Loudon memorial fishing match THE TWELFTH annual Mark Loudon memorial fishing match took place on Sunday, February 27. The event raised £800 which will be split between The Teenage Cancer Unit and Cancer Research Centre both at

Sheffield Weston park hospital in memory of Mark. The competition is organised by Mark’s widow Sonia and her parents Wes and Melanie Lindsay. Sonia said: “Thank you for the kind contributions from shops,

businesses and individuals.”

Fishing took place from 10am to 4pm with scales down at 5pm with the competition boundaries from Sewerby Steps to Paull Lighthouse, 90 people fished.

Brewer Wallace Spring Triples at Hornsea Indoor Bowls Club By Ron Bulless HORNSEA Indoor Bowls Club will be holding the Brewer Wallace Spring Triples Competition on April 3 at the indoor bowls club on Atwick Road.

Brewer Wallace Solicitors has been established in East Yorkshire since July 2012 with the two principals, Dennis Brewer and Bob Wallace, having collectively over 50 years’ experience in a broad range of legal services.

clubs to take part. Players are drawn out of a hat for partners but then we have a twist – each team member must play lead then second, then skip in different games. In game four they can play in any order they wish.

Teams go on the rink for four 40 minute sessions with two points for a win and one point for a draw. The team with the most points after four games is deemed the winner.

We also have a shot count that can prove critical as it did in the Christmas Pairs Cup which resulted in a one end shoot-out. To test the skills of the bowlers we also have mat to mat and corner to corner challenges.

All are welcome to come along and put their name forward, volunteers will be on hand to serve refreshments.

The event is 9am – 9.30am registration for the draw at 9.30am

and first games away at 10am. With eight sessions of 40 minutes and the other challenges, the day comes to an end with prize giving around 4.30pm.

Hornsea Indoor Bowls club has suffered the same as many clubs post pandemic with lower membership. By holding such events we can raise funds to keep the club as healthy as possible and this cannot be done with local firms like Brewer Wallace.

Sandra and Margaret volunteer to run the kitchen, Graham Watson is chief scorer, time-keeper and all round general helper, Alan Hardaker opens up the club and Sylvia Dunn runs the raffle. I have the simplest of jobs in finding a sponsor, advertising the event, and saying a few words. I just want to go on record in expressing my thanks to everyone who supports these events.

Hornsea Outdoor Bowls Club (Atwick Road) By Neil Gabriel WITH the season quickly approaching Atwick Road Bowls Club have been actively planning for the new season.

The green is looking excellent and in great condition, the pavilion has been overhauled and captain's planning for the forthcoming season is underway.

New members are more than welcome and the registration day will be taking place on Saturday, April 2 at 10am so come along and join us.

Hornsea Indoor Bowls Club Marking & Umpiring Awareness Day By Ron Bulless On February 12 HIBC threw open the doors to invite bowlers from across the region to introduce those that had an interest in officiating at bowls matches to becoming markers and perhaps moving on to becoming umpires.

23 attendees came from Ryedale, Filey, Scalby & Newby, Holderness, Flamborough, Cottingham, Doncaster, Walkington and our own club.

I have been involved in the game since I was 15 and even qualified as a coach in my late twenties, thinking that I was fully aware of the rules and etiquette of the game. Having attended the day, I can only say that my respect for the umpires/markers and the job they do has only increased along with my knowledge of rules and procedures.

The course was run by the English Bowls Umpires Association (EBUA). Leading the course was EBUA Secretary and National Tutor Bernie Hill, who is regularly seen officiating at Potters and will be umpiring at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this year.

Also Maxine Groce the Northern Area Co-ordinator and Greg Brown an International Umpire who is also EBUA Vice Chair and National Umpire Examiner – quality people with quality knowledge.

The day started in the morning with multiple questions on

different aspects of the game with attendees working in groups to come up with the correct answers.

I was surprised as to the differing opinions put forward but we worked well to answer as many as we could. At the end of the session all answer sheets were scrutinised by the umpires with prizes awarded to the winning table (which I was delighted to be on!).

We then broke for lunch with Sandra producing a lovely plate of food to each person attending followed by teas and coffees before heading onto the rinks for the practical.

Knowing where to position yourself when getting down to measure, which wood to measure first, how to place wedges on woods when the woods are leaning on each other, what do you do if someone bowls out of order, what if they send an opponent’s wood instead of their own – the questions and solutions were endless.

Here are a few teasers if you think you are sure of the rules: 1. How far must a wood travel in metres to be legal?

2. If a jack rebounds up the rink off a wood – how far from the mat must it be to be legal?

3. If a toucher moves a jack that is already at rest in the ditch, what should happen?

4. How long do you have after the game to object to the result?

5. What do you do if your opponent removes woods before you have agreed the result of that end?

If you don’t know the answers to the above then you might benefit from attending such a course. We ran the course with a small discount for Hornsea members but it included lunch tea/coffee for all attendees Enormous thanks must go to club members Alan Hardaker who recently qualified as a Regional Umpire and Lis Watson (qualified County Level Marker who has her practical stage Umpires exams next month) for helping to arrange and publicise the event – especially Alan as he ended up assisting the umpires in aspects of the practical elements of the course.

Certificates will follow to all attending and who knows one day we might see one of them on the telly umpiring at Potters or a Commonwealth Games.

PS Congratulations to Maxine Groce on winning the Official of the Year Award at the English Bowl’s Associations Awards Dinner for her exceptional work as an Umpire and everything else she does behind the scenes as a volunteer.

50 mph winds it made the race very challenging. Lap six and to my amazement I was still keeping up, then the final straight with the wind behind and helping us on the last leg Stephen left me for dust.

Mile 26 turned out to be my fastest mile of the marathon but it wasn’t enough. I was very happy to settle for second place with my 56th marathon.

It’s Grim up North (IGUN) events - Saturday, February 26

This week’s marathon was a lovely ride out to Scar House Reservoir with the wonderful Grim up North. It was a mid week marathon in preparation for the Hardmoors’ 55. With not many runners turning out I fancied my chances of a podium finish. Then the Hardmoors’s legend Stephen Kirk, winner of the marathon series 2021, turned up…so second place would be my aim.

It was six loop’s round the reservoir with absolutely stunning scenery. Running outwards was a technical trail section and back on the dirt track.

We set off and I managed to keep up with Stephen for two laps chatting away in the glorious sunshine, lap three and we could see a beautiful rainbow over the reservoir which meant one thing we were going to get wet. Sure enough we certainly did and with

Poppy attempted her first IGUN 5k race after supporting many of her fellow harriers she wanted to tackle one for herself. The weather conditions were perfect and she was full of enthusiasm ready for the start. She started out well following the canal towpath with lots of support and cheers from the other runners taking part to keep her going, she took the first steep lock in hand and carried on to the second lock which was a bit of an uphill struggle to the halfway point to turn back, with legs like jelly and lungs out of puff she pushed hard and made her way to finish line where she was proudly presented with a giant medal and a giant slab of IGUN cake to top it off.

Hornsea Peloton club update

By Club Chairman, Roger Storry FIRSTLY I would like to thank all the riders who came on rides during the winter. We had little in the way of snow and ice but plenty of wind and rain! Also many riders chose to use the zwift platform to train and keep fit over the winter months with many joining teams and racing and enjoying social rides in the world of Watopia - well done to everyone.

On April 1 membership renews at £5 for all members and those who would like to join.

Rides began from the first week in April after the clocks move forward.

If a ride cannot be led or has to be cancelled for some reason then it will be posted up on the event or in the discussion page to let riders know. The evening rides will begin at 6pm for the time being moving to 6.30pm as the nights become longer.

Sunday social ride Low intensity paced ride. Meeting at 9am at Brewers Kitchen at Hornsea Freeport. Around two hours riding time with a cafe stop on return to Hornsea. Non drop ride. Route to be decided by ride leader.

Tuesday Evening social ride Low intensity paced ride. Meeting at Woods roundabout at 6pm. Around an hour and half. Non drop ride. Route to be decided by the ride leader.

Lights required for safety.

Wednesday evening ride Mid to high intensity paced ride. Meeting at Woods roundabout at 6pm. Around an hour and a half. Non drop ride. Route to be decided by the ride leader. Lights required for safety.

Sportive 2023 Unfortunately it is too late to plan a sportive now for this year and with the uncertainty of Covid last year, early into this year. However we are looking into planning one for 2023 using the popular WFK falling leaves Route. We are hoping to contact the Rotary club to ask for their support in running the event.

Carnival 2022 After two years being absent due to the pandemic the Carnival is back and the town will be looking to celebrate its return. We think it would be great if the Peloton and Flab ride and Hornsea Breeze got together to ride in the parade to promote the Hornsea area cycling community.

Sundown 60 sportive Would be great to see some more riders join us one this fantastic sportive.

Xmas party 2022 I know it’s a bit early as we move into summer, but we are already hopefully have a date and venue for a Xmas party on December 9 at Hornsea Golf club with the Hornsea Harriers. One for the diary.

Lastly we have all been impressed with Kirstie Drakeford’s start to her first racing season and as a club would like to help her advance. Racing is expensive with travel costs ,entry fees and equipment all adding up. So as a club we have decided to contribute to those costs where we can to help her. We wish her every success in her upcoming races.

Also a general shout out to everyone training for challenges and fundraising or just simply getting out on their bikes however big or small the ride. Just enjoy it and ride on!
