PRESERVING THE PAST

The Artist Kevin Travers of American Revolution Design is an artist by circumstance, who has a knack for crafting charming, oneof-a-kind pieces of furniture and quirky characters from almost forgotten junk. He personifies the adage of one man’s trash being another’s treasure. Travers worked fulltime on remodeling and restoration projects before suffering an injury that prevented him from working for more than a year. While out of action, he began making furniture out of everything from salvaged tool boxes to old farm equipment. Travers collected bits and pieces for his cache from restoration projects, his grandfather’s garage and from the estate of a late Rehoboth toymaker. One Easter, having already started making furniture, Travers decided he wanted to make something for his kids. Along came Travers’ first character, the Bunny Bot, an object made of materials salvaged from a scrap heap. “My wife said ‘I didn’t know you could make toys.’ Neither did I. She said, ‘go make something else,’ and it turned into cars and spaceships and robots.” Today Travers continues his remodeling and renovation work, but he’d

Kreatelier actively supports sustainable practices, local designers and artisans. In the living room, a throw blanket by In2green, a New York company that uses recycled T-shirt fabric to make yarn, adds a finishing touch. houldn’t design be fun? pernilla frazier and Line Daems, co-owners of Kreatelier, think so. Their decorating philosophy speaks for itself (go ahead — browse their Hope Street shop or a home they’ve styled and try not to smile). In addition to color, modern textiles and bold patterns, Kreatelier also has a soft spot for repurposing (why waste or buy new?) and all things local. This cozy fixer-upper in Barrington is the perfect paradigm.

Kreatelier brightens up an East Bay home with its signature style. BY JENNIFER STEFFY SWANSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY NAT REA

The young family who chose to make this home their labor of love met its match in Kreatelier. Not intimidated by color or outside-the-lines patterns, the couple embraced Frazier and Daems’s punchy style and — room-by-room — set about transforming the house into their home. The living room began with a bold, floral print rug the clients found (read: scored) on their own. Working with the rug’s vibrant palette, Kreatelier made throw pillows to give

the neutral sectional a bit of pop and pull the rug colors deeper in the space. The Roman blinds, also made by Kreatelier, play off of the more subtle blues and greens in the rug and tie into turquoise hues in an adjacent room. Kreatelier used colorful striped fabric by Les Toiles Du Soleil to cover bar stools in the kitchen, and coordinating placemats and napkins carry the color from the kitchen to the dining room table. Upstairs, windows in the master bedroom were dressed with Roman blinds in fabric by Oliveira Textiles — a Bristol company owned by Rhode Island designer Dawn Oliveira, who specializes in sustainable materials. Kreatelier saw promise in this old chair’s curvy lines and sturdy construction. It was saved from the side of the road, recovered and given new life as a one-of-a-kind piece. A quilt, made by Frazier, tops the bed. The lesson: With the right fabric, anything can become something fun. HD

Ocean State Style

Have saltwater running through your veins? Show pride in your home turf with sea-inspired decor. BY MICHAEL COLBERT

1 Teresa Mowery of Patina Studios unites Mother Nature and chemistry to produce stunning works of original art. In fact, Mowery’s art is based on science. She uses metals, acids and salts to create decorative pieces for the home. She masterfully coaxes patinas from copper and other metals to produce gorgeous weathered blue-greens and bronze. Many of her pieces pay homage to the sea — waves, sand dollars and nautiluses adorn her work, as do compass roses — enabling admirers to feature classic Rhode Island decor in unexpected ways. Tiverton Four Corners, 8 Neck Rd., Tiverton, 862-1060, patinastudio.com.

2 Whales, fish, octopi — sea creatures of all shapes and sizes, really — artist Ashley Van Etten captures them in nautical themed serigraphs at Willywaw, the Narragansett studio and workspace she shares with her husband. Willywaw goods run the gamut from prints to notecards, tote bags and throw pillows, but all of it has that perfectly weathered, quintessentially Rhode Island look. Her work isn’t limited to tea towels and linens either: Her T-shirts make great gifts for friends outside of the Ocean State. 31 Sextant Ln., Narragansett, 742-9641, willywaw.com.

3 Ed McAloon is a modern Renaissance man who makes stained art glass, jewelry and sculptures out of his home studio in Warren. An interest in salvaging architecture and antique glass led him to begin collecting and later restoring, constructing and designing his own stained glass pieces. He incorporates Rhode Island into his work by depicting coastal scenes, creatures and maps and by using locally found sea glass and driftwood. 595-8405, mcadesignstudio.net.

4 Think stained glass only belongs in churches? Think again. Jennifer Weeden-Black designs custom stained glass art at Islandesign Glass in Jamestown. With a background in painting, Weeden-Black’s color expertise is at the forefront of her glass designs. Her work features fresh images of local scenes and icons including the Newport Pell Bridge, Block Island and even the Boston Red Sox logo. Weeden-Black also crafts glass windows from sea glass found in Rhode Island. The deep colors in her palette make for beautiful variations in her natural scenes. islandesignglass.com.

Past Presents

The only thing you should expect to find at Rē: the unexpected. From vintage ladies’ accessories and antique furniture to framed art and home accents, you’ll find something on every visit that you didn’t know you needed until you saw it. The best part? There are always a handful of specially priced bargain buys somewhere on the floor. Go ahead — happy hunting.

About Rē Heidi Stevens is a modern day treasure hunter and, luckily for the collectors among us, she likes to share. Stevens is founder of Rē (pronounce it as you do redesign, repurpose or rediscover), an eclectic South County shop where a fabulous mix of old and new scavenged treasures await their next owner. Much of the inventory comes from estates, while other scores are made during Stevens’s frequent travels to Manhattan and beyond. A former wallpaper and fabric designer, her artistic eye is an asset while she’s on the prowl for stock. “The uniqueness of pieces you’ll find here sets us apart,” she says. Photo: Chris Vacarro

How does she decide what would make a worthwhile addition to Rē’s cache? “It may not be something I’d put in my own house, but it has to have integrity,” Stevens says.

Enjoy a beautiful piece of nostalgia in your home and preserve the past for future generations.

“Whatever genre it comes from, it has to have a bit of drama. I love drama in a room.” HD Rē, 7512 Post Rd., North Kingstown, 667-5996, rerhodeisland.com.

housands of frames — and even more works of art to place in them — line the walls of Providence Picture Frame, the local mainstay that’s been in the business since the 1800s. The company is widely recognized as the oldest and largest frame store in New England but during the last year-and-a-half, it has also become an important addition to New England’s high-end fine arts community. During that time, owner Geoff Gaunt has supported regional artists by showcasing their works in the company’s two Dryden spaces: the intimate first floor Red Gallery and the appropriately

named third floor Grand Gallery. Gaunt’s mission is to provide area artists, some of whom aren’t well known, with an accessible showcase in which to display and sell their works. The galleries shouldn’t be thought of as platforms for amateurs; from paintings in all styles and media to photography and sculpture, the pieces featured at the Dryden galleries are the works of gifted artists worthy of very serious attention. 1 Who knew that bamboo, steel and leather could be so cool? Studio Endo, founded by designer Miles Endo, designs and fabricates custom furniture that’s functional and beautiful. Located in the historical Dyerville Mill in Providence, the shop creates an array of products from furniture and Japanese taiko drums to everyday serving boards. Studio Endo furniture, much of which juxtaposes metal and wood, would look right at home in a chic, urban loft or mill (go figure). 808-271-8137, studioendo.com.

4 Rhode Island School of Design grad Scot Bailey is a West Coast transplant with an academic background in architecture and furniture design. Whether he’s working in steel, wood or polypropylene, Bailey’s reverence for geometry and proportion is at the forefront of his designs, which include furniture, lighting and cabinetry. He has collaborated on furniture for use in the RISD Museum and the Brown University Center for the Creative Arts. scotbailey.com.

2, 3 David Kiernan’s contemporary furniture designs are as fresh and relevant today as they were more than twenty years ago when he first established his Cranston studio. His primary medium is wood but, as evidenced by these stacking tables, his creations often include metal accents. From tables to chairs to beds, Kiernan’s modern furniture designs showcase the beauty of simple shapes and precise execution. 573-8259, davidkiernan.com.

he makings of a beautiful partnership have been planted on Main Street in Wakefield. That’s where DiStefano Brothers Construction and Fresh Nest Color and Design have opened a joint office to serve as a home base for their burgeoning design-build venture. DiStefano Brothers is no stranger to South County. The family owned company, which specializes in remodeling projects, has been rooted here for more than a decade. The move to align with Fresh Nest, led by principal Janelle Photopoulos, comes after a year of successful collaborations on joint projects. Although the two businesses will offer services independently of one another, the new working arrangement facilitates collaborations for clients who are interested in a streamlined designbuild experience. “The goal is increased value for the customer,” says Peter J. DiStefano of the partnership. “It’s one cohesive team working toward the same goal.” Proof of what is possible when the two combine talents is evident in a recently completed home in North Kingstown. Living Art These are not fish tanks, they’re aquarium exhibits, and they can influence the environment in your home. BY JENNIFER STEFFY SWANSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY NAT REA

Something Fishy creates saltwater and freshwater aquarium exhibits in a range of sizes.

O

wner kurt harrington says something Fishy doesn’t work on fish tanks. Instead, says Harrington, the company he’s built over the past twenty years creates aquarium exhibit experiences for clients in both residential and commercial spaces. Harrington’s vision for what his company has become began in 1993 when, at age fifteen, he started cleaning his dentist’s fish tank. Today, Something Fishy’s clients include Mystic Aquarium and YaleNew Haven Hospital in Connecticut, Google’s Boston headquarters and, yes, his dentist. Harrington equates aquarium exhibits to living art for the home. “Aquariums move people,” says Harrington. “The placement of water and fish in the heart of a home, without question, contributes to its atmosphere.” As mesmerizing as they are, he says that aquariums can also promote relaxation, which makes them ideal for master suites, study areas and libraries. There are designs (and sizes) to suit any interior style, so regardless of your taste, there’s an aquarium fit to move you in your space. HD

Something Fishy Philosophy

“Whether you are looking to energize, simplicity in focus, aquarium ownership… motivate, calm, or educate, we can create an exhibit that speaks to you.”

Kurt Harrington (known to some as the “Fish Guy”) is seriously passionate about his company and what he does. He says the Something Fishy philosophy is based on five basic principles and beliefs: 1. Aquariums move people in amazing ways. 2. Harrington’s vision is to share the energy and influence of aquarium exhibits with people everywhere. 3. In a sea of resources, Harrington says it’s important not to confuse information with knowledge. Something Fishy provides clients with the education to get it done right the first time. 4. Simplicity is the key to happiness. Something Fishy aims to simplify aquarium ownership with its customers or for its customers, depending on their needs. 5. Aquarium exhibits are a natural component of any space. Whether you are looking to energize, motivate, calm, focus, or educate Something Fishy can create the environment you’re looking to foster.

Pattern Play

Ho-hum accents become topics of conversation when there’s a pattern (or two) in the mix. BY MICHAEL COLBERT

1 The intricate low-relief patterns of Roseberry-Winn Pottery and Tile are truly distinct. The handcrafted line includes choice pieces of pottery and a growing selection of decorative tiles. A thoughtfully developed color palette enables the high fire vitreous porcelain to complement a variety of interior styles, from country home to beach house. Although the patterns are delicate, the pieces are meant to be used and are dishwasher- and microwave-safe. 816-0010, roseberrywinn.com.

2 With a penchant for patterns inspired by her travels throughout the Middle East, Providence artist Jenna Goldberg crafts one-of-a-kind furniture with colorful, graphic designs that pop. At Jenna Goldberg Studio, she makes furniture including cabinets, tables, dressers and jewelry boxes that she then adorns with silkscreened animals, shapes, waves and flowers. All painted by hand, every piece is unique. Her work is eye-catching, and her use of color is masterful. 339-1448, jennagoldbergstudio.com.

Made with natural materials and produced locally, her fabric, pillows, rugs and totes use simple shapes and bold colors to take the drab out of environmentally friendly materials and add a pinch of whimsicality. 1 When it comes to closets, size isn’t everything. Large, poorly planned spaces become black holes for clutter, and small closets without rhyme or reason are equally useless. The key to happy, functional closets is organization and if you’re not a professional, this is one area where hiring one is money well spent. Custom Closet Geeks, a local company with showrooms in West Greenwich and Acushnet, Massachusetts, transforms all-consuming pits into useful, efficient spaces regardless of size. Plus — from consultation to fabrication and installation — they do it all themselves. Custom Closet Geeks, 685 Orchard St., New Bedford, Massachusetts, 508-858-5282, customclosetgeek.com.

Located in one of historic Wakefield’s nineteenth century buildings, Dove and Distaff has been a family owned custom upholstery and drapery shop for more than fifty years. Fun, one-of-a-kind glass lighting fixtures you’ll want to have on all the time. BY MICHAEL COLBERT

1 Rebecca Zhukov of Providence Art Glass has a way with her medium. Upcycled glass lamps? Check. Hand-blown lighting fixtures? Check. Zhukov customizes each handblown lamp to suit its intended space, creating modern and colorful orbs which are enhanced even further when turned on. In addition to her lamps, Zhukov makes elegant glass bird nest sculptures with a rich core color surrounded by twigs, suggested by lines of frosted glass wrapped around the exterior. 316-8276, providenceartglass.com.

Founded by Felicia Hwang Bishop, the line of customizable lighting and accent furniture features modern forms and a mostly muted palette. Produced in Warren, Hwang Bishop’s high-end designs are used in residences and commercial spaces throughout the world. Lamps are made of the highest quality ceramics and custom colors are always an option. 245-9557, hwangbishop.net.

2 Customizability and sophistication typify the work of Tracy Glover Objects and Lighting. Glover left her studies of architecture in order to learn about glass at RISD and has since been crafting blown-glass lighting fixtures, hardware and decor. She employs understated colors so that her work is versatile and can suit myriad decors. From beautiful clusters of orbs in warm and cool hues to singular pendant fixtures that tout sophistication, Glover does a little bit of everything. As exhibited in this Orbital pendant, she celebrates small bubbles and imperfections in the final product as these mark each piece as unique. In addition to lamps and lighting, Glover makes finials and doorknobs. 724-1100, tracygloverstudio.com.

With their bright colors, stripes and lines, their wares can energize any space. 331-7889, peandoubulyu.com.

Luxury Style Low Prices

Lighting Design The Premier Apartments, a luxury residential building in Providence, may be new, but owner/developer Kenneth Dulgarian wanted to keep it in line with the neighborhood. “The property is on the historic East Side, and he wanted to keep that gilded look and feel inside the building,” says Abby Leavitt, lighting specialist at the Lighting Shoppe at Crown Supply. “He wanted the best.” To create the elegance Dulgarian envisioned for the building’s common areas, Leavitt recommended sconces by Framburg, the oldest light manufacturer in the country. “All of their products are manufactured in the United States, and they’re expertly crafted. Everything can be customized from the finishes to the crystals.” Jim Cunningham, Crown Supply’s commercial account sales and marketing manager who partners with Leavitt on many projects, says her suggestion was spot on. “Abby has a showroom in her head,” he says. Beyond the way a light looks, lighting specialists can help you choose products that will perform as you need them to. The goal, says Cunningham, is to make the selection process simple for their clients. “We take the technicalities and turn them into plain terms so customers get the look and feel that they want.” The staff works with architects, designers, homeowners, contractors and real estate agents. “It’s important to have clients’ trust. I don’t want anyone to walk out of here unhappy,” Leavitt says. —Jennifer Steffy Swanson

The arrival of several new retailers over the past few years — including Anthropologie, Pottery Barn and the Container Store — have bulked up Garden City’s cache of home goods stores. ometimes all it takes is a new duvet for the master bedroom, a splash of unexpected color to perk up the kitchen (a Le Creset tea kettle in brilliant red, perhaps?) or a new dining table and chairs to replace the tired hand-me-downs from Aunt Ethyl: Freshening up the look of your home doesn’t have to entail anything as dramatic as demolition. When you’re feeling particularly uninspired in your space, Garden City Center is a great place to shake that funky feeling with some new fresh ideas. The outdoor shopping area has been on the radar of every newlywed and home gourmand ever since Williams-Sonoma, the grand dame of all things kitchen, first set up shop there twenty-plus years ago. Today, in addition to a recently expanded Williams-Sonoma, Garden City features a handful of other top home retailers, the newest arrivals being Pottery Barn and the

Container Store, which — if you haven’t checked it out yet — needs to be on your to-do list. However imposing your organization or storage conundrum may be, the Container Store has a solution for it. The variety of stores ensures that there’s one with a style to match your own, whether your taste is traditional (hello, Country Curtains) or a little more of the hipster ilk (Anthropologie, your wallpaper and inlay mirrors make me swoon). On an even smaller scale, mark the changing of the seasons with one of Yankee Candle’s popular signature scents or quirky candlelit knickknacks. With an interest in recycled and reclaimed materials, Johnson restored antiques for ten years and built metal furniture for five before pursuing his true passion of creating reclaimed art, available for purchase on his Etsy shop. His materials vary from piece to piece but his creativity, ingenuity and quality remain consistent. Johnson seamlessly integrates unusual items into useful objects. For instance, he offers items such as lamps constructed of mixing bowls or baseball bats, wall sconces made of carburetors, bookshelves made of pistons and more. Each item is unique, polished and fully functional. Aside from his one-of-a-kind furnishings, Johnson also offers retro-style prints of iconic Rhode Island landmarks. 219-1850, etsy.com/shop/ mattjohnsondesigns.

5, 6, 7, 8 Before she even knew what her company would do, co-owner Beth Scanlon Melfi dreamt it would be called Silver Hippopotamus. Months later she and her sister, Kathy Scanlon McGovern, were at a salvage yard sifting through old industrial doodads and machine parts when they made the connection that their finds were as strong as a silver hippopotamus. From there, they started integrating these pieces into reworked furniture. Their work has

Previously, the pair’s work could only be found in pop-up galleries, but now they’ve settled into a permanent studio at the Mad Dog Artist Studios in Pawtucket. 65 Blackstone Ave., Pawtucket, 258-2745, facebook.com/silverhippopotamus.

9, 10 After more than twenty-five years building furniture, Steven Sabella opened his own shop, Sabella Studio, in 2013. With an emphasis on sustainability, Sabella works out of a restored eighteenth century barn in Westerly and uses reclaimed wood as much as possible, his favorite being American chestnut. Sabella also uses cherry, tiger maple, ash and oak. In addition to wood, he uses recovered items in his work, such as the bow pulpit from an old boat used in one of his tables. Throughout Sabella’s pieces, the properties of different species of wood — including texture and grain — are highlighted greatly, making the details the focal point. Sabella’s work is functional art, sharing both a striking aesthetic and craftsmanship. Accepting contract work, Sabella invites prospective clients to bring him old objects to incorporate into commissioned pieces. 439-0564, sabellastudio.com.

ith every home renovation or new build, it’s important to use high-quality materials that are made to last. These can range from big ticket items, like appliances, to subtle details, like cabinet hardware. However, no room is complete without appropriate flooring, and Factory Carpet Outlet is a premier destination for it. As its name implies, the Pawtucket-based company has a huge selection of carpet, but it also offers top brands of hardwood, area rugs, tile, stone, laminate and more. In addition to some of the more conventional options, the choices at Factory Carpet Outlet also include bamboo, cork and vinyl. Each of these flooring options has its own benefits and characteristics, such as carpet, which is soft and traps allergens and dander from the air that can easily be vacuumed. While the traits for each floor may be difficult to navigate on your own (did you know there are four categories of carpet and two types of hardwood?), the expert staff at Factory Carpet Outlet is primed to help you make the right decision. And their expertise is not over once you’ve made a selection; they’ll also help you once you’ve picked your ideal floor. Other services include interior design services, on-site measurement, removal of old flooring and professional installation. After remodeling and redecorating this home with a coastal theme evident through elegant blue walls and new furnishings, the owners were eager to protect their investment. Well designed islands give this kitchen the look the homeowner wanted and the function he needed. BY JOSHUA AROMIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY NAT REA

A

n amazing waterfront view was this home’s main selling point, and its new owner was intent on a complete remodel that would transform it into a house fit for its surroundings. In addition to an entertainment center and bathrooms, Kitchen Views — the home design division of materials supplier National Building Products

— was challenged to design an open concept kitchen, where designer Lisa Zompa was given free rein. Such freedom requires experienced, intuitive creativity and detailed planning, so Zompa began where she does with all her clients: the homeowner’s lifestyle. As a single dad who enjoys entertaining guests, he wanted a kitchen

This island acts as a service station for entertaining, with a built-in wine rack on its outfacing side and a beverage fridge on the kitchen side.

that was easy to live in and accommodating for visitors. Zompa’s layout aligns with the ceiling support beams, which she used to determine the kitchen space. The kitchen is defined by three islands: a service island with wine rack; a prep island near the stove; and an oversized L-shaped island containing the sink, two dishwashers and ample counter space. Silestone quartz was used because it has greater scratch and stain resistance than natural stone. The outside of the L-island includes a raised level for casual seating, and the living area side features glass door cabinets and shelving to

display personal items. Appliances are concealed with matching panels of Greenfield Cabinetry — cherry with ginger stain on the largest island and eucalyptus-colored panels that match the stovewall cabinets mask the refrigerator. For a project to be successful, Zompa says it’s important to have trust between the designer, builder and client. In this case, proof of that trust is in the kitchen. k i t c h e n o r b at h r e m o d e l i n v o lv e s m a n y c h o i c e s a n d decisions. Is your style modern or traditional or maybe transitional? And that’s just the beginning. “That’s what we’re here for,” says Rita Beck. Beck is owner of Cumberland Kitchen and Bath Design Center, where she leads a team of experienced interior designers and installation pros. “We help from start to finish — layout, color coordination, material choices — and you’ll see everything put together in a computer schematic.”

1. Make sure you’re comfortable with the designer you choose. You’ll be spending four to six weeks with them in an intensive project, so you need to feel free to ask questions, explore options and feel heard. “One thing we do that puts customers at ease is offer a single point of contact for the entire project who listens to your needs. You get the same person from initial meeting to measuring and designing, through coordinating the installation.”

2. Get a sense of your budget. Sure, prices can vary widely depending on materials, but if you start with a dollar range in mind, the designer can work with you to fit your choices into your budget. Beck suggests a little Google research — or even watching a few home renovation shows on television — to get an idea of average costs before you visit designers. 3. Think about how you use your room. How many cooks are in the family? Do you want an island for prep work? What are morning bathroom schedules like? When Cumberland Kitchen and Bath pros come out to measure

your space, they’ll also sit with you and ask lots of questions to get a sense of how you use your space and what you need to make it work for your family, your schedules and traffic patterns. Together you’ll work up a wish list and then add and subtract items in the design process to fit your needs and budget. 4. Know what you’re buying. When it comes to materials, quality and craftsmanship are important. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about cabinet construction and where they are made. For countertops, check out the pros and cons of different materials. Cumberland Kitchen and Bath Design Center sells American-made cabinetry, and Beck likes quartz countertops for their durability and National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) certification. Designer Dana Breggia turns a client’s vision into a working kitchen. BY JOSHUA AROMIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS VACCARO

h e n t h i s h o m e ow n e r f i r st a p p r oac h e d Supply New England about remodeling her kitchen, she presented designer Dana Breggia with a collection of clippings that clearly outlined what she had in mind for her space. Breggia and the client worked collaboratively, swapping ideas, thinking and rethinking different aspects of the kitchen throughout the entire process. The result is an elegant, classically designed kitchen and exactly what the client envisioned. The perimeter is lined with marshmallow cream custom Fieldstone Cabinetry, while the contrasting island features dark cherry peppercorn-colored semi-custom Kraftmaid cabinets. To match the cabinets along the walls, a custom hood was installed over the range, as was paneling over the dishwasher and refrigerator. A light coffered ceiling and dark hardwood floors carry the dark-to-light color contrast throughout the room, and a farm-style sink in hammered copper complements the island. In addition to an oversized island, the client’s goals included having a baking area for her daughter, a large prep space and ample storage.

OPPOSITE: Storage topped this homeowner’s must-

have list. Cabinets are abundant in the kitchen (top) and a nearby laundry room (bottom left); an adjacent mudroom features a multi-functional bench with cabinets overhead and underneath. ABOVE: The farmstyle sink, which features a hammered copper apron, sits atop Fieldstone Cabinetry in marshmallow cream, further emphasizing the contrast of light and dark colors seen throughout the kitchen.

Breggia has been designing for more than eighteen years and realizes everyone has different needs and tastes, and it’s her job to meet every client’s objectives. While some — like the owner of this kitchen — have a strong idea of what they’re looking for, others don’t. For both types of clients, Breggia provides guidance through the project’s entirety and makes sure there’s a balance between aesthetics and functionality. With the help of Supply New England, a vision that started with many different ideas was encapsulated into one forward-moving plan and ultimately brought to life as a beautiful, yet very usable living space. here can you learn how to shuck oysters properly and see gourmet kitchen appliances in use? Or discover the best wine and chocolate pairings while checking out interesting kitchen design? The Rhode Island Kitchen and Bath showroom, of course. The showroom features a gourmet working kitchen where RIKB hosts cooking demonstrations by local and celebrity chefs such as Frank Terranova of Johnson and Wales and Linkie Marais from the Food Network. It also hosts community events such as a monthly Gloria Gemma cancer survivors’ cooking class.

“Having a live kitchen sets us apart. It brings new people into the showroom and enables them to think about us as something other than a kitchen and bath showroom,” says Prudence Stoddard, certified kitchen designer and director of design at RIKB. Along with discovering hidden culinary talent, you may get inspired by the opportunity to see how a well-designed kitchen can function. “We may have a few more cooktops than the typical home, but this helps people understand flow and traffic patterns, the idea of not putting appliances too close together, and how much space you do need

if you have more than one person in the cooking area at one time,” Stoddard says. Another way RIKB helps inspire homeowners is through its “Ten Steps to a Successful Kitchen or Bath Remodeling Project” seminars. Whether you’re just beginning to think about a remodel or you’re ready to start demolition, the seminars offer helpful information and design experts to answer all your questions. They cover the latest design trends, how to budget your project, what to expect during construction and different levels of remodeling from cosmetic facelifts to down-tothe-studs do-overs. “Remodeling can be overwhelming. The seminars break it down into manageable topics, helping people understand the process, the costs and all the steps involved,” Stoddard says. “And you don’t have to work with us on your design to come to the seminar. This is a free resource open to all in a no-pressure setting.” Seminars are held monthly (except during the summer) in the showroom, and dates, times and registration for all RIKB events are listed online. Rustic design with a modern industrial edge? Yes, please. BY MICHAEL COLBERT

1, 2 Tables inspired by nineteenth-century France, rustic bookcases and modern picnic tables are all part of Nicolas Esposito’s oeuvre at the Pawtucketbased NICO Workshop. Drawing inspiration from his time as a student in Colorado and as the first full-time American fellow to work and study with the Compagnons du Devoir in France, Esposito purveys fine, handmade furniture for both commercial and private purposes. He strives to emulate the first American craftspeople, whom he believes set a model for incredible craftsmanship and sustainability in their work. His aesthetic is varied and his versatile furniture fits both modern apartments and rural cottages. This table, made of locally forested red cedar and a custom welded metal base, is suitable for indoor and outdoor use. thenicoworkshop.com.

3 David Ellison left a career in corporate America to build wooden tables by hand, and those who have seen or own a creation of his understand why. At the Lorimer Workshop, Ellison and his team build tables for a variety of purposes and their work embodies modernist, rustic, industrial and urban aesthetics. Ellison uses aged lumber when possible and applauds the unique knots and imperfections of this wood, as it gives each table its own distinct character. As the type of wood available varies over time, each table is unique, and clients discuss with Ellison and his crew what they would like to see in their custom table. Hammered steel legs give this classic farm table an industrial edge. The table and its two coordinating farm benches are finished in a medium walnut stain. 610 Manton Ave., Providence, 714-0014, lorimerworkshop.com.

Aqua Pool’s pools and hot tubs can transform a backyard.

Private Retreat

Aqua Pool and Patio can transform your backyard into a luxurious resort setting.

O

BY JOSHUA AROMIN p e n s i n c e 1 9 7 0, t h e f a m i l y - r u n Aqua Pool and Patio is an industry leader in the construction of custom designed in-ground gunite pools. Serving all of southern New England, the Connecticut-based company can design pools of all sizes and for virtually any setting. Their pools transform the backyards of homes into oases for entertaining friends and family. Aqua Pool’s work is masterful, combining stunning aesthetics with state-of-the-art mechanics, ensuring their pools look great and function flaw-

lessly. Mike Grabon, controller and accountant at Aqua Pool, says pool owners traditionally open their pools during Memorial Day weekend and close them on Labor Day weekend. However, hot tubs are a standard accompaniment for most of Aqua Pool’s projects, allowing clients to alternate between warmer and cooler water. As a result, Grabon says more and more pools are now being opened in March and closed in November. Grabon says some of his clients have even thrown pool parties on Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve.

The Diving Board Debate Before Aqua Pool and Patio starts the design and construction of a new project, they have an in-depth discussion with every homeowner. While it’s common for clients to want a diving board, Aqua Pool is quick to remind them that the launch pads can increase home insurance. Also, if a diving board is omitted, the need for an eight-foot deep end is omitted, too. With that, the ends of the pool are about three-to three-anda-half feet deep with the middle reaching about five feet. This approach requires less water, and therefore reduces the amount of chemicals and labor needed to clean and heat the pool, respectively, lessening maintenance costs over time.

In addition, Aqua Pool offers lots of other bells and whistles including built-in cleaning systems and electronics that control the pool’s settings remotely, either from a smartphone or panel in the home. Aqua Pool’s designs can also incorporate waterfalls, fountains, patios and complementary landscape lighting. Post construction, the company offers a variety of maintenance and service packages. Not so. “Your policy should reflect how much it would cost to reconstruct your home and replace your personal assets,” Gibb explains. A home is — by definition — a personal space, which is why truly comprehensive policies are equally as personal.

Having the right insurance coverage for your home starts with an accurate appraisal. BY JENNIFER STEFFY SWANSON Starkweather and Shepley is one of the few brokers in the state that can write policies with Privilege Underwriters Reciprocal Exchange — or PURE — a policyholder-owned property and casualty insurer designed for high net worth individuals and families. PURE offers a concierge-level service called PURE360 Risk Management Consultation, which increases transparency around the appraisal process. “The home appraisal process is a critical part of obtaining adequate insurance limits, something that is important to policyholders and insurers alike. is also complicated and has long been a source of friction in our industry,” says Gary Stephen, senior vice president of claims and risk management of the PURE Group of Insurance Companies. “The PURE360 was designed by standing in the shoes of our members and their agents and focuses on ways to eliminate that friction.” After a risk manager concludes a PURE360 visit, if the cost to rebuild is found to be significantly higher than what was submitted, he or she will call the member to discuss the results and make sure all the information captured in the initial visit is accurate. In the event that the member still has questions, or they disagree with the information provided in their risk management report, PURE also offers a formal independent appeals process, during which their valuation will be reviewed by a panel of independent experts. Gibb says that while not every homeowner feels such personalization is necessary, many Starkweather and Shepley clients have high-value assets — be it fine art, antiques, heirloom furniture or highly customized homes — which necessitate comprehensive coverage. He also encourages clients to revisit their policies regularly — just as you would check smoke detector batteries every equinox — but absolutely when renovating or remodeling your home. “There isn’t a one-size-fits-all, especially for high-end clients,” says Gibb. “What we create for our clients are customized risk management programs, a personal approach to risk protection.” HD Starkweather and Shepley, 60 Catamore Blvd. (home office), East Providence, 435-3600, stark weathershepley.com.

When power is lost, automatic standby generators run on natural gas, propane or diesel.

In addition to fuel, the company offers installation and maintenance services for heating, cooling, air quality and standby generator systems. George Fantacone, service manager for the Santoro Oil family of companies, explains a few generator basics.

Honeywell generators feature mobile monitoring, which means owners can check their status from virtually anywhere.

What’s the benefit of automatic standby generators over portable generators? An automatic standby generator is a backup electrical system that operates whether you are at home or away. Unlike portable generators that have to be started manually, standby units automatically supply power to circuits of your home or business within seconds of an outage. After utility power returns, they shut themselves off. They operate on natural gas, propane or diesel and are installed outside your home like central air conditioning (AC) units. What does a standby unit consist of? A standby generator system has three parts: the generator, the automatic transfer switch (ATS) and the fuel source. Santoro Oil delivers, installs and maintains the generator and the ATS. Santoro Propane, a

Standby generators will start by themselves in the event of a power outage.

Generator Installation & Service division of our oil company, delivers fuel to our generator customers. What will a standby unit power? Size matters. Generators supply electricity to the electrical panel circuits of your home or office through a load center. You select the circuits you want to protect and everything on that circuit will be powered. Our technicians will inspect the electrical service, discuss your needs and prepare a free written proposal outlining the specific equipment suitable for your home. Why can’t I buy a generator from a local home center? You can and some do, only to discover that if you have a problem you must contact the manufacturer and not the home center for warranty or service work. You may have to ship the entire unit back to the factory at your expense in order to have repairs made or exchange a faulty unit. You will also have to pay an electrician to disconnect and reconnect the unit. When you buy a Honeywell generator from Santoro Oil, which is the only brand we sell, we stand behind it. We, not the homeowner, are responsible for the warranty and repair work.

Protect Your Home’s Comfort 24/7! Together Santoro Propane and Gas Doctor will maintain your level of comfort even during the most severe weather conditions.

Why Honeywell? Honeywell standby generators offer superior performance and reliability. Their aluminum enclosures are corrosion resistant, which prolongs the life of your generator, particularly in salt air locations such as Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts. Honeywell generators also feature mobile monitoring so you can check your generator’s status wherever you are. Plus, every standby Honeywell generator is backed by a fiveyear warranty. What do I need to know before I decide to purchase a standby generator? You need to know the code requirements for your specific location. Building codes require set backs from lot lines, roads, windows, doors, soffits and AC (HVAC) units. We employ consultants and technicians who can inspect your property at your convenience, free of charge, to determine where to best locate your generator and its fuel source. What kind of maintenance do they require? We set your generator to exercise weekly to prevent oil seal drying and damage between outages but, just like your car’s engine, your generator will need oil and filter changes. We can perform the required annual maintenance, as well as emergency service, if needed. HD Santoro Oil, 101 Corliss St., Providence, 942-5000, santorooil.com.

home renovation can be really exciting, but with building permits, design plans and construction, it can also bring added stress and anxiety. One of the less obvious, yet still important, things to consider during a renovation is what to do with existing furniture and items. Keeping everything on-site can create cramped living space and you run the risk of damaging your belongings. Astro of New England provides the solution. Their professional movers can properly wrap and pack your possessions and then transport them for storage in their climate-controlled facility with twenty-four-hour video surveillance. The family owned company understands how difficult it can be to entrust someone with your personal items, which is why they treat clients and their belongings with the utmost care and respect. “It was our house,” says Diana.“It was our family house.”

AF TER SANDY

Anyone who has grown up in Rhode Island or spent time in its southern coastal neighborhoods can picture it. It was a true Rhode Island beach shack: Cramped, yellow, without insulation and, say sisters Trudy and Diana of the Misquamicut vacation home, perfect. The sisters didn’t grow up in Rhode Island, but their parents had. As is so often the case when you’re born here, it became a difficult place to shake. Rather than fight it, their parents spread the love and vacationed regularly in Rhode Island with their three daughters, instilling them with the same affinity for the great little Ocean State they once called home. It wasn’t until the sisters were grown with children of their own that their parents bought the little yellow house on Atlantic Avenue, where, for fifteen summers, three generations of their family gathered to enjoy one another’s company and that pristine patch of sand. Then came October of 2012 and Hurricane Sandy. ➳

A small shelf built into the deck railing gives family and guests a place to set a drink as they mingle and enjoy the view. Horizontal cable railing rather than wooden balusters was chosen to keep the view open.

A twelve-foot folding Andersen door in the kitchen opens to a covered, screened-in porch — ideal for warm summer nights dampened by passing showers or August afternoons when the midday sun is too much. With the folding door open, the exterior space functions as part of the house, making it easy to entertain large groups.

ABOVE: Working with Kitchen

Design by Coventry Lumber, designer Lorine Foley helped guide the family’s decision on cabinets and finishes. Because this is a family house that often hosts sizeable groups, a large open kitchen is a must. Engineered maple floors were chosen for the first floor because they’re easy to keep clean (hello, sand) and they handle moisture well.

The storm left parts of Atlantic Avenue unrecognizable — buried in sand, rocks and strewn with debris. Trudy, who like her sisters and parents lives outside of Rhode Island, remembers watching post-storm coverage of Misquamicut on television and seeing the skeletal remains of a building flash on the screen. Eventually she realized the decimated structure was their house. From their homes out of state, the family descended on the property to salvage what they could — a cribbage board made by their grandfather was found; some dishes were

recovered, a bean pot that had belonged to their grandmother was not. After inventory was taken it was decision time. What to do: rebuild or cut their losses? If they did rebuild, they wanted to resurrect a comfortable home where their beach shack had been — nothing ostentatious, but something designed to be what its predecessor had become: a family gathering place, and one that wouldn’t fall so easily. “The question wasn’t only do we, it was can we do what we want to do,” says Diana.

Building on waterfront property is complicated, particularly when said property is thousands of miles and several states away from your home base. Coastal regulations, environmental zoning, town and planning permits — the regulatory angst is unrelenting when you’re dealing with waterfront property. In order to make the project happen, they needed a builder with the knowledge and resources to assume total responsibility for the project, from permits to finish work. ➳ 2015 HOME DESIGN | 75

A deck above the screened-in porch is accessible to two upstairs bedrooms and provides incredible views of the Atlantic. INSET RIGHT: Photovoltaic shingles on the roof are inconspicuous but enable the home to generate much of its own electricity.

INSET LEFT: Caldwell and Johnson took what was left of the old house down to the sand. New concrete footing and pilings, reinforced with rebar, were erected for the new house. Breakaway walls at ground level will enable the house to be untouched in the event of another Sandy-like storm surge.

“The goal was for the homeowner to be able to sit in the new home and watch the next category five hurricane blow through,” says Dave Caldwell, the second generation owner of the full-service design-build firm Caldwell and Johnson, which was hired for the project in November of 2012. He says the agreed-upon approach was straightforward: “Mother Nature took us down. Let’s go back up and be a little less invasive, accommodate the sea level rise and the location a bit better.” Eighteen months after Caldwell was engaged for design, engineering and permitting, the house was done, and the family was in for Memorial Day. The permitting stage for coastal projects like this often takes longer than the construction itself. In this case, the regulatory rigmarole was completed in just nine months. The new home was one of the first on the beach to be back up and, although Caldwell and his team hustled, the house is solid

and is designed to be resilient to the environment. A firm believer in sustainable building materials and practices, Caldwell and his signature are evident throughout: the envelope is tight with energy efficient Andersen windows and doors, the home well insulated and the roof is lined with photovoltaic shingles, which enables it to generate much of its own electricity. The house meets the National Green Building Standard and is Energy Star certified. “The quality of his work is outstanding, and it’s important to him,” says Diana of Dave Caldwell, which is something that shows in the finished product. “We have all these great memories of being here with our kids,” says Trudy. “We’re going to rebuild those memories and make more.” “What has been built there has been built to last,” says Caldwell, which is exactly what the clients wanted all along. e ry l a n d g e o f f r ey k a r d o n k n ew the house had potential, but getting there? That would take some work. For years the couple had made Rhode Island their home away from home (a.k.a. the heart of Beantown). Both successful veterinarians, they enjoy the hustle of the city — its pace and its people — but everyone has to unwind sometime. For the Kardons, relaxation was found aboard a boat they kept in Wickford. And, while trading the city for the sea is certainly a change of pace, after fifteen years Meryl was ready to trade their floating getaway for a piece of solid ground. That’s where this house came in. It was nearly sixty years old, dated and it was sliced into a handful of cramped rooms, which made its modest size feel even more cramped. But, it was in Narragansett and within walking distance to a beach where their dog could walk and play in the surf. The pair was in the market for an affordable second home, and this — if done right — could be perfect. Before the Kardons closed on the property, they met with a handful of builders to talk vision and logistics. One of those builders was Justin Zeller of Red House Custom Building, a design-build firm out of Barrington. “There was a connection that day,” says Meryl. “I was immediately drawn to his vision to work out of the box. Other builders were looking at this as a typical new construction, and that’s not what I wanted.”

What she had in mind was an open floor plan that would make the house feel as though it had taken a deep breath. She envisioned a clean, crisp interior with lots of windows and a beach-inspired palette. The little Cape didn’t have dormers, and the upstairs space was mostly ignored by its previous owners. The Kardons hoped to locate a master bedroom on the second floor, leaving the downstairs wide open for living space. Zeller was intrigued by Meryl’s vision, and believed it was a project suited to Red House’s design-build philosophy. The Kardons closed on

the Bonnet Shores property in November of 2013 and, ten months later, construction was complete. The Red House team began by gutting the interior. A small addition off the back proved just enough to get rid of that cramped feeling. The wide open format the Kardons wanted required the installation of a vertical support post and a steel beam across half of the ceiling. The decision to continue the steel across the whole ceiling was an aesthetic call that works well with the home’s clean, retro-industrial vibe. The kitchen is anchored by a gorgeous custom island, which is a compilation of several pieces that were manipulated to work as a single unit. The kitchen opens freely to a dining space, which is separated from a sitting area by the steel stairs. The open staircase keeps the room from feeling closed or disjointed. The house has great flow, which is so important in a smaller space. In addition to fluidity, the house is beautifully minimalistic — not overdone, it’s the perfect balance of style and simplicity. Upstairs, adding a shed dormer made it possible to realize the Kardons’ vision of a second-floor master bedroom, and pocket doors are a thoughtful use of limited space. “It was an intriguing project from the beginning,” says Zeller, “and it embodies the beauty of the design-build process: matching the client’s dream with Red House vision and craftsmanship.” HD Architectural Design, Concept and Construction: Red House Custom Building, LLC, 337-5634, redhousecb.com, see ad opposite page. Constructing or renovating any home involves long lists of permits and code requirements, and building on coastal properties presents even more challenges. This stunning bay-front home, which underwent a complete renovation by Davitt Design Build, was no exception. Over the years, Davitt has earned its reputation as a highly skilled and knowledgeable design-build firm specializing in projects just like this one. The company acts as a navigator for its clients from start to finish, providing much needed guidance for coastal projects and maximizing what clients can get on a case by case basis. This Jamestown residence looks nothing like its former self. The now four-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bathroom home sits on three acres of land and has been reinvented for entertaining. Inside the house, the client wanted as many open ocean views as possible, and Davitt obliged by incorporating five custom Andersen door units with the largest single-pane impactresistant windows on the market. Although the original home’s footprint was kept, a new tower was constructed, and the garage was rebuilt at an angle to maximize the pool’s exposure to the sun. The client also wanted uninterrupted views of the bay from the pool, a request met by surrounding the pool with

hree years ago, debra torres and her husband, Bob, were driving around Common Fence Point in Portsmouth when they spotted a worn down summer cottage by the water that looked like the perfect downsizer home once the kids were off to college. After realizing renovations to the existing home wouldn’t be possible, the couple chose to buy and rebuild, wanting a lasting home for themselves and future generations. For thirty years, Torres has worked at Horner Millwork, and this project allowed her to use the very products the company offers, including windows, interior doors and mouldings, custom cabinetry, stairways, entrance units and built-in storage spaces, most of which are made locally in Somerset, Massachusetts. “It was kind of like giving a kid a fresh box of Crayola crayons — and I didn’t get the eight colors — I got the big box. With the help of her team and all of Horner’s crayons at the ready, Torres and her husband have their Portsmouth dream home to share with their children and grandchildren for many years to come. Warming Meridian Design Build offers an inside look at their new family-friendly neighborhood of custom homes in Rehoboth.

The service island (above) in the kitchen features a built-in breakfast bar, and ceiling-high cabinetry offers extra display space for favorite showpieces. Spacious backyard decks (below) will take advantage of each lot’s views that can include mature trees, stone walls and plenty of peace and quiet.

T

he preserve at brook street is a neighborhood of forty lots tucked into an expansive wooded site with a pretty view around every corner and easy access to routes 6, 195 and 44. Lots range from one-and-a-half to three acres, with one eight-acre lot available. Eleven custom homes have been sold, and the construction process has begun. Many of the homes have been purchased by young families with children. “It’s a nice young family neighborhood. Rehoboth has a good school system, a high quality of life and low taxes,” says Alex Mitchell, co-owner of Meridian Design Build. And there’s plenty to do with three soccer fields in the development and numerous golf courses and pool clubs nearby including the Hillside Country Club, which features a pool, dining, day spa and other amenities. The natural beauty of the subdivision sets a high benchmark and as it builds, Meridian has been careful to keep as many trees as possible. “Each house will be nestled among mature trees and extraordinary rolling topography, so as you drive the meandering roads you have a nice view of forty-to fifty-foot trees,” says Rod Mitchell, Meridian’s co-owner. And unlike developments of yesteryear, the homes do not all look the same. There will be some traditional grand Colonials, some Craftsman and some New England shingle-style houses. ➳

Custom details, such as a Mason jar chandelier in the dining room (above) and a custom fireplace surround (below) have a modern farmhouse feel. Solid oak wide-plank hardwoods in a beach sand hue create a relaxed vibe throughout the first floor, and abundant windows bring in outdoor views. A flex room at the bottom of the stairs (right) is just the size for a casual workspace.

Soothing is the name of the game in the model’s master bath (below), starting with radiant heat in the floor and soft neutrals on the walls. Designed with a free-standing deep soaking tub, oversized glassed-in tile shower, great natural light and Bianco Carrera marble floors and countertops, the room is clean and sophisticated. The master bedroom (left) features cathedral ceilings, walk-in closets and large windows with wooded views. The two rooms combined make for a spacious, peaceful retreat.

A custom standing-seam metal roof over the farmer’s porch keeps the entry dry and adds an interesting exterior detail. The two-car garage features an interior door that opens into a mudroom. Each home at the Preserve will be personalized for its buyer, and Meridian is finding that mudrooms (left) top the request list. Meridian customizes mudrooms to fit each family, making them both functional and beautiful. Buyers can also choose how to use the bonus room (below left) with shed dormer over the garage — think oversized bedroom, rumpus room, office/library or kid’s TV room.

“We feel strongly that neighborhoods are most interesting when homes honor each other but also integrate people’s individual choices so you get a nice variety, not only of colors but also design aesthetic. The result is an interesting streetscape,” explains Rod. “We’ll spend energy on what might seem like small details, such as trim around the front door, or a special window or architectural detail, such as sill accents, that elevate the exterior of the house and make it that much more special.” Interiors are personalized and varied as well and incorporate features that today’s families want, including open concept family rooms connected

to showplace kitchens large enough for the whole family and guests to gather, personality-filled mud rooms, plus an office or flex room. Worth a visit, the completed model shows many of the features Meridian knows its clients enjoy. One example: nine-foot ceilings that make it possible to use larger windows and transoms, which let in more natural light while adding architectural interest both inside and out. “One of the nice things about the Meridian design experience is that we have a broad palette of what we can achieve, and clients get to see that in our many homes under construction as well as in our website gallery. That way they can react to the details they like,” says Chris Kelley, director of custom homes. Building a custom home involves choices in style, details and color. Meridian has developed a team to guide buyers through the design process and comfortably make decisions they feel good about, making the process less stressful. “Our goal is always to make the end result superb, but also to make the process enjoyable for the client,” Kelley says. Meridian utilizes proven environmentally friendly practices including high efficiency heating and cooling systems, high-performance insulated building envelopes and working with low-maintenance sustainable products. “With thirty years of building experience to fall back on, we offer value engineering during the design process. We are careful reviewers of new technology, and customers can inquire about Design and Construction: anything, from a variety of energy systems to Meridian Design Build, finish products,” Rod explains. 866-455-6806, The model is located at the entrance to the meridiancustomhomes.com, development and is open most Sundays and see ad inside back cover. by appointment.
