DREAM BOATS DEFINED In recent months, we have delivered many yachts to both the U.S. and Australia, including a one-of-a-kind custom FD100, a classic FD90, and an FD80 with one of the most luxurious interiors we have created to date. The FD110 features a five-stateroom layout with an on-deck master suite, enclosed skylounge, beach club and spacious crew quarters for up to six. It’s the series that has become synonymous with Horizon Yachts. The striking exterior appearance that draws the gaze of onlookers. The imposing profile dominated by expansive swaths of glass. The vast deck areas inviting the ready yachtsman. It is the FD Series—a line of voluminous, semi-displacement yachts that has pioneered and inspired a generation of high-volume designs from every major yacht builder. THESE PHOTOS The FD87 Skyline arose from owner Travis Fox’s request for an enclosed skylounge design—a challenge that Horizon and renowned yacht designer Cor D. Rover (pictured) were willing to meet.

With the advent of volume-driven designs generated by the introduction of the FD Series, new and existing Horizon clients recognized the potential for even more innovative designs for the interior and exterior layouts of their new builds. Enter experienced yacht owner and engineer Travis Fox, who was taken with the FD85's design at its U.S. debut during the 2016 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Travis, whose previous boat was a Cor D. Rover design, sat down with Cor and Horizon CEO John Lu during the show to discuss an FD build. In contrast to the Open Bridge design of the FD85, Travis inquired about the possibility of an FD yacht with an enclosed skylounge—a design request that led to his FD87 Skyline and eventually to what became the FD90 Skyline model. While the original FD85 featured a raised pilothouse, Travis’s FD87 Skyline was designed with an uninterrupted main-deck level and enclosed bridge with a Portuguese bridge forward and a

After enjoying his custom FD92, this client decided to build bigger and ordered a new FD110 Tri-Deck yacht. (Read the full feature on page 34.) “My first build exceeded every expectation I had for the project, ” he says. “The Horizon team were very professional and extended every courtesy to make sure our new yacht was designed and built to our dreams. Every part of the process, from design, to build, and through warranty was a pleasurable experience.” Pioneering the high-volume trend that is now permeating the yachting industry, the Horizon FD Series range now includes six distinct models of Open Bridge or Tri-Deck variations and spans from an FD75 to the FD125, with an FD140 superyacht design concept in the works. What distinguishes the FD Series yacht from other high-volume builds, however, is its advanced composite construction technology and innovative and proprietary High Performance Piercing Bow (HPPB) and hull design. Not only are the Horizon FD Series yachts packed with amenities and plenty of space, they provide under-the-waterline performance and stability that guarantees comfortable and safe cruising. “Traditional yacht design wouldn’t accommodate the layouts and features we wanted, so advanced engineering and careful planning has been a necessity for many of the FD models,” says John Lu. “This is exactly what sets Horizon apart from other builders—our drive for innovation and our willingness to push the proverbial envelope.” THIS PAGE Spanning from the FD75 to the FD125, the Horizon FD Series range includes six distinct models of Open Bridge or Tri-Deck variations.

The introduction of SLA 3D printing is an important step in THESE PHOTOS From scale models to custom exterior and deck sections, Horizon’s new 3D printing facility helps translate design ideas into a tangible form for clients to review.

Horizon’s design and yacht building process, which is based upon a strong collaboration between designer, builder and client. Each Horizon yacht build allows for a broad scope of customization, so having the ability to create a perfect scale model of a new yacht’s design allows Horizon’s design and engineering teams to accurately evaluate the overall space and workability of a concept. With SLA 3D printing, a scale prototype can be completed in just three days, which expedites the design—and build—process and streamlines costs and efficiencies tremendously. “By utilizing 3D printing, we are able to shorten the design discussion period considerably,” says Horizon’s Tooling Center Supervisor Andy Tsai. “When our clients can hold and feel a scale model of their new yacht, they are able to comprehend the design, flow and functionality much better than what we can see from a GA or rendering. Our design and engineering teams can then be innovative and optimize the yacht’s design, and overall we have more flexibility to modify the model and special features.” At Horizon Yachts, design and product development is a “hands on” process. The 3D printing provides a real-time design that can be assessed for proportional relationships, lines, practical spaces and overall style. In addition to the scale models and the build-out of small custom parts, the 3D printing technology is currently being used for exterior areas of a yacht, such as the hull, superstructure and deck sections. In the future, Horizon plans to use this process to aid in the design of shaft struts and engineering parts, which will help standardize the parts production and engineering designs.

THIS PHOTO Horizon continues to keep an eye on the future, with plans to utilize its 3D printing technology to aid in the design of shaft struts and engineering parts.

A new Horizon yacht has hit the water, once again demonstrating the world class builder’s strength in customized yacht designs and builds. The new RP125 springs from the Raised Pilothouse (RP) platform but features an FD Series High Performance Piercing Bow for enhanced performance. Named Vin Xan, the new RP125 was visualized by and built for a repeat Australian owner, who previously owned an RP100. At 125 feet in length, she is the largest Horizon yacht sold in Australia. The first notable layout variation of the RP125 is the absence of a raised pilothouse, which was removed to allow for a spacious salon and an exceptional galley area with high ceilings and large windows on the main deck. The wheelhouse is instead situated on the bridge deck and features a state-of-the-art console with twin helm chairs and a desk area, as well as Captain’s quarters and a dayhead with shower just forward of the enclosed skylounge and bridge deck dining area aft. Set off by a sophisticated interior style highlighted by rich South American walnut and ebony accents, Vin Xan’s main salon features an L-shaped sofa with a dayhead that faces a fold-down television and lift-up wet bar with sink, refrigerator and ice maker on the starboard side. An onyx panel with LED lighting surrounds the bar—this stone is echoed in the design of the aft deck dining table as well as the wall of the master suite. A raised overhead design sets off the salon space and extends forward into the interior dining area where it is punctuated by Swarovski crystal lights over a custom ebony dining table for ten. Similar to the FD Series layout, this RP125 is designed with an on-deck master stateroom with walk-in closets, a vanity and a sunken ensuite with dual washbasins.

The foredeck offers a sunpad and U-shaped seating area as well as a custom drum winch designed for reef anchoring. As the largest Horizon yacht sold in the Australian market to date, Vin Xan is the new flagship of the Horizon RP Series of yachts.

ANOTHER EAGLE CROWNED

After enjoying their custom FD92, the owners of Crowned Eagle decided to expand their Horizon…and build an FD110 Tri-Deck.

The opportunity to customize a new build often draws experienced owners to the Horizon yard, and once they’ve built their first yacht, they are likely to repeat the experience with subsequent builds. Such was the case for one avid boater, whose desire for both an open flybridge and an enclosed skylounge led to the design and development of the first tri-deck FD Series model—the FD92. After actively cruising aboard and enjoying their FD92 Tri-Deck, Crowned Eagle, the owners decided to step into something a bit larger. They selected the FD110 Tri-Deck platform upon which they could customize a layout to suit their lifestyle.

THIS PAGE The FD Series' signature floor-to-ceiling windows feature prominently on the main deck, which is outfitted in light oak with walnut accents; the aft deck features a starburst design in the ceiling (above).

Boasting a five-stateroom layout with an on-deck master suite, enclosed skylounge, beach club and crew quarters for up to six, the FD110 Tri-Deck’s list of amenities is suitable for a high-volume yacht of this length. What is remarkable, however, is the space given to each area. Once again, Horizon has introduced a new model that outranks traditional yachts of the same length and the experienced owners were well aware of what the FD110 could offer them—and their crew.

Highlighted by a round dining table for ten, the main deck aft features a wet bar and built-in U-shaped seating as well as plentiful storage. The mark of experienced owners, storage is considerable throughout, and every space appears to have been carefully designed for maximum efficiency. Sliding glass doors lead into the main salon, where a dayhead and comfortable seating area is positioned aft and a large formal dining table with a sunburst inlay is situated amidships. The FD Series’ signature floor-to-ceiling windows feature prominently in this space, which is outfitted in light oak with walnut accents. An etched Hi/Lo partition separates the large galley from the guest space. The galley itself is well equipped to accommodate the owners’ cruising and entertaining plans, and features a large center island as well as a seating nook with a fold-down table for the chef or crew—who enjoy a private staircase from the galley to their spacious quarters forward on the lower deck. Doors to port and starboard access the side decks—the port door somewhat out of sight from the guest areas and easily facilitating crew flow without interrupting dining or relaxation in the salon areas.

“Our favorite part of the boat? The crew quarters!” say the owners. Indeed, the crew quarters aboard the new FD110 are nothing short of exceptional. Positioned forward on the lower deck instead of the traditional aft location, the crew area aboard Crowned Eagle includes a large mess and three ensuite cabins—one double and two bunk. In addition to the private crew staircase that accesses the galley directly above, a companionway leads to the guest accommodations foyer aft for ease of service. While the crew have their own laundry, the owners also specified a large laundry and storage room for the lower deck guest area, allowing for efficient laundry service akin to that found aboard 150ft+ charter yachts. The ensuite guest staterooms on this level are spacious in their own right, with three queen and one convertible twin branching off of a wide hallway highlighted by a backlit feather etching in the aft bulkhead—a special touch created by the yard for the owners. A small drinks refrigerator is positioned in the lower foyer, and additional storage is found behind hidden cabinets.

Another unique layout request was accommodated on the bridge deck, where an asymmetrical enclosed skylounge with a dayhead is positioned aft of the wheelhouse. The wheelhouse itself features dual wing doors as well as a desk for the captain and a raised settee for guests and can be partitioned off from the aft skylounge with a door as well as a Hi/Lo partition behind the settee. This area can be open to the boat deck aft, which features a dinette as well as a bar with fixed bar stools. When the aft tender is deployed, the deck area offers additional space for lounging or entertainment. A side deck runs the full length of the port side on this level and leads past the bridge door to the spacious foredeck area. This space can be shaded with sun awnings and offers sunpads, a Jacuzzi tub and built-in dinettes.

As if the deck areas aren’t enough on this FD110, the uppermost “Tri-Deck” does not disappoint. Accessed via stairs from the bridge deck aft, this large space is yet another piece de resistance, as it is fitted with plentiful settees, a bar area and sunpads for a truly relaxing space. Soon after taking delivery of their latest Crowned Eagle, the owners set out for a maiden voyage to the Florida Keys after which they returned to The Bahamas, one of their favorite cruising areas. “We loved our FD92,” they say, “but the new Crowned Eagle is even better!”

Building a yacht for the first time can be a daunting task, and sage advice and guidance is necessary for a smooth process. Horizon’s proven FD platform, decades of yacht building experience, engineering prowess, and dedicated, knowledgeable team form the pillars that support clients throughout the project. This support and the option for customization attracted experienced American boaters to Horizon for their first yacht build, which would be based on a mid-size FD model in terms of interior volume and layout options.

Christened Issimo, which is an Italian suffix that punctuates a love for the very best in life, this custom FD Series yacht commemorates her owners’ Italian heritage with an owner-specific design throughout. On the main deck aft, the owners opted to remove the standard staircase on the starboard side to allow for a wet bar. Private access to the crew quarters and engine room is situated to port while dual stairs to either side of the freestanding dining/lounge area lead to the large Hi/Lo swim platform and fully equipped beach club with multi-functional seating behind a hydraulic transom door. Accessible through the beach club or the dedicated stairway on the aft deck, the crew quarters are well-planned and comprise a double cabin, bunk cabin and full en suite. Beyond the sliding glass doors on the aft deck, the main salon showcases the Mid-Century Modern furniture sourced by the owners, which immediately conveys a sophisticated feel. The lounging space with a liquor and glassware cabinet are situated to port, while a dayhead and entertainment area with built-in television are found to starboard. V O L U M E 6 2 // 2 0 2 3

MYSTIC

The Mark Twain quote: “If you don't like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes,” is as true today as ever. Over the four June days of the Horizon Yacht USA Owners’ Rendezvous in Mystic, Connecticut, owners and guests were treated to the quintessential blend of sun, rain, fog, wind and more sun.

On Day One, attendees checked in at the Schaefer’s Spouter Tavern in the heart of Mystic, where they received their overstuffed Horizon gift bag. The branded sail bags contained Helly Hansen vests, t-shirts, blankets, koozies, custom oyster shuckers and a bottle of The Real McCoy rum. Warm greetings were followed by a welcome bar, where guests sampled the finest The Real McCoy 12-year single-blended rum amidst a background of authentic sea chanteys. It’s said that namesake Bill McCoy was a legendary rum runner, thus a fitting tribute and kick off of the 10th Rendezvous in good company with other adventurous sailors.

Debbie Lou, Sweet Sarah, Andiamo and Ceviche attended as guests. In all, 14 groups of Horizon yacht owners were present including a special guest—Cor D. Rover, designer of the Horizon FD Series—making a total of 80 people in attendance.

Meanwhile, down at the Boat Shed, preparations were underway for an authentic New England clam bake with all the fixings. The Boat Shed is a historic open-sided structure with a commanding view of the Seaport docks and the Mystic River. As guests filtered in, they were treated to the sounds of Northern Fried, a fabulous and entertaining band set up at the water's edge. Director of Horizon Yacht USA Roger Sowerbutts gave a welcome speech, followed by Events Coordinator Danett Utecht reviewing the schedule of events as the sun set over the river. It often takes a bit of time and a few cocktails to get folks up to dance but when Northern Fried piped up with the Gloria Gaynor tune, I Will Survive, there was a virtual stampede to the dance floor.

On Day Two, owners and guests ambled into a leisurely traditional New England breakfast accompanied by mimosas and Bloody Marys at Greenmans’ Landing within the Museum. Afterwards, small groups set out to explore the museum with various tours of the shipyard projects, where old and new technologies are employed side-by-side to maintain the fleet. Owners and guests visited watercraft halls with endless displays and the Figure Head room with its dramatic presentation of carved and painted ship figureheads. A narrated tour above and below on deck of the Charles W. Morgan revealed where the term “know the ropes” originated. Young museum sailors in training high above the deck learned to work the myriad lines, each with its own name that controls the sails. Other extraordinary exhibits were the model boat shop and the enormous scale model of the entire Shipyard as it looked in the 1800s. By day’s end, everyone was decked out and ready for an upscale evening. All aboard the trolley! As the champagne flowed, owners and guests were transported to the famed Ocean House, an iconic oceanfront resort in Watch Hill, RI. This five-star luxury resort sits on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic. As “the first and only AAA 5-Diamond and Forbes 5-Star resort in the state and one of only 14 in the world,” this beautifully classic yellow New England-style resort was the perfect venue for an evening of this caliber.

THESE PHOTOS After a fabulous dinner in the oceanfront ballroom, the dance floor became crowded—and never let up—as Sugar rocked the house well into the evening hours.

THESE PHOTOS On Day Two, guests enjoyed an upscale evening at the five-star luxury resort Ocean House, which offered an idyllic spot to watch the sunset (and snap a few photos too).

With the New England weather doing what it does best, the cocktail hour was spent on the ocean-view terrace despite the squall, which eventually gave way to a glorious sunset and multiple photo ops. A fabulous dinner was served buffet-style in the private oceanfront ballroom as the evening musical entertainment, Sugar, began to rock. Within a short time, there was a crowded dance floor that continued for the remainder of the evening.

Mystic Seaport Museum

THE MYSTIC SEAPORT MUSEUM The largest maritime museum in the United States, the Mystic Seaport Museum brings the history of an 18th century New England seafaring village to life complete with all its maritime trades. Established in 1929, this living history museum now comprises over 60 historic buildings on a waterfront campus of nearly 20 acres. Exhibits and demonstrations in the shipyard employing traditional tools and techniques are used to maintain the ever-growing collection of historic boats and ships. The jewel in the Seaport crown, the Charles W. Morgan, is the last remaining New England whaling ship of the 2,700 built. Preserved by the shipyard, the Charles W. Morgan was launched in 1841 and completed 37 voyages in her 80-year career before being acquired by the Seaport in 1941. Preserved by the shipyard, she was completely rebuilt and returned to sailing condition in 2008. She is now open to museum guests as are many other historic vessels, including the 1882 iron-hulled sailing ship, Joseph Conrad, which also serves as the dormitory for the Mystic Overnight Sailing Camp.

THESE PHOTOS Owners tapped into their creative side with the Boatbuilding Contest judged by designer Cor D. Rover (pictured middle); Valiant (pictured right) took home second place.

Mystic Seaport's history and charm, combined with an array of exciting

events planned for our guests, made this year's rendezvous a very special and fun-filled four days, both on and off the water.

Day Three dawned wet and wild, the New England weather living up to its reputation again. Undeterred, guests ventured out to visit many of the Seaport's indoor displays until it was time for lunch and the judging of the Boatbuilding Contest. Each of the attending owners had been given an identical pouch of wooden pieces, paper, string and glue with which to construct a water-worthy vessel. With no instructions, the boats could be configured in many ways, guaranteeing the originality of design. Lined up together, these creative entries made for a very difficult decision for the contest judge: the renowned yacht designer Cor D. Rover. Ultimately, First Place was awarded to young Branson from Crowned Eagle with second place going to Valiant. The sun was beginning to peek in and out as the Yacht Hop and Aft-Deck Décor competition began. The introduction of the Horizon signature cocktail— presented by the dread pirates, Captain Carnivorous Karl and his Sea Wench, Fanciful Phyllis aboard their pirate ship Inflatable—kicked off the Whale of a Time Yacht Hop. THESE PHOTOS Sunny Day Four brought a sailing trip aboard the traditional schooner Argia, down the Mystic River to the open waters of Fishers Island Sound.

Day Four dawned sunny and beautiful. Just after breakfast, owners and guests headed into town for a sail down the Mystic River. All aboard the Argia, the traditional schooner, to the open water of Fishers Island Sound. Those choosing to stay ashore were afforded additional time to continue exploring the Seaport Museum and the town of Mystic. That evening, more champagne was joyfully consumed, accompanied by lively conversations on the trolley ride to the Farewell Dinner hosted at the Jonathan Edwards Winery in North Stonington, CT. The concept of the Edwards family was simple, “Make great wine and enjoy life more often,” and perfectly exemplified during the Farewell Dinner. Guests gathered for the cocktail reception on the brick patio, complete with an oyster bar, fabulous hors d'oeuvres, a jazz trio and a welcome introduction to Jonathan Edwards wine at a full bar.
