Did You Know?

Grand Lake's Monkey Island got its name as a result of a visit to the zoo. There are lots of legendary (and entertaining) stories about how Monkey Island got its name, but this is the real one.

A family who owned much of the land that is now Monkey Island was on a trip to the Tulsa Zoo with friends. The Pensacola Dam was just completed, providing for the back-up of river flows to create Grand Lake.

As the friends contemplated the future, they gazed at the Monkeys on their little island at the zoo. As they discussed changes to the landscape once Grand Lake was filled, a friend commented, "You'll be like those Monkeys out on their little Monkey Island."

A reporter overheard the conversation, wrote a story - and the name stuck. Monkey Island looks a little different than it did in those days!

A Letter from the CEO

To our valued Shangri-La members and guests

It’s our favorite time of the year at Shangri-La Summer has arrived! Eddy’s Lakeside Bar is open, The Summit Restaurant has added Thursday-Monday lunch service, the Pool Bar is open, new menus at The Summit, Doc’s, Eddy’s, and The Galley have received rave reviews, membership numbers continue to rise, and the golf courses are filled with players enjoying two of the premier courses in the United States

I want to remind our members and neighbors that the golf courses have a single purpose for a single group of individuals – golfers! Monkey Island may very well have more golf carts than automobiles, but golf carts are NOT allowed on the Shangri-La courses for any purpose other than playing golf. Our cart paths are not a shortcut to other venues. Nor are they a place for sightseeing and joyriding We offer trail passes for our members who wish to use their own carts for golf, but the trail passes only allow course access while playing golf – and no carts without trail passes are allowed on the courses under any circumstances I am disappointed that abuse of the cart paths on the golf courses has reached the point that drastic action is necessary, but that time has arrived If a private cart is being used on the course to play golf and does not have a current trail pass, a trail pass will be issued for that cart and placed on the members’ bill. The only exception to this is the use of the convenience path that connects the Estates neighborhood

to Shangri-La Clubhouse/Summit

This path was put in place as direct access from the Estates to the Clubhouse as a matter of convenience and does not require a trail pass to be on the cart Any deviation off of this direct access path will be in violation of ShangriLa Policy related to unauthorized golf carts being on the course If you have already paid for a trail pass, but have not placed it on your windshield, the pre-paid passes are available at the Golf Shop If you do not have a trail pass, but would like to have one, contact Laura Barnes, Membership Manager, at 918-2577790 or email laura barnes@shangrilaok com Trail pass prices for the year (including tax) are $743 40 I appreciate your support of ShangriLa, related to this matter, in maintaining the value of your membership

We have a tremendous variety of entertainment options including live music at Doc’s Bar & Grill every Friday night and at Eddy’s Lakeside Bar every Saturday night The sports bar and arcade at The Anchor are fun for all ages and, of course, pickleball, tennis, basketball, Wiffle® Ball, sand volleyball, and cornhole are always popular for outdoor enthusiasts Boat rentals, yacht charters are available at the marina along with the only parasailing adventures in this part of the United States There’s fun for everyone at ShangriLa!

The biggest single day of the year is, of course, our Independence Day

celebration which will be celebrated this year with a Family Fun Festival and the awesome Monkey Island Fireworks Show on Saturday, July 5 This incredible show can only be possible with your assistance and support. If you would like to join the dedicated supporters of the fireworks, please make your check payable to Monkey Island Fireworks and mail it to Monkey Island Fireworks, 30397 South 567 Road, Unit #63, Monkey Island, OK 74331 We couldn’t be more grateful for Fireworks Committee members Peggy Howard-Burgess, Doug Smith, and Mike Williams for their hard work raising money for this tremendous show each year I hope you will participate

As I complete six years as President and CEO, I am constantly reminded that I am so privileged to be associated with such an outstanding team and the best group of members in the world. Thank you for your support, your input, and for being such an important part of the Shangri-La Family! The entire Shangri-La team is excited about a fabulous season that is already well underway!

As is the case anywhere you travel, local laws are different I want to remind our members and guests about the uniqueness of Oklahoma’s liquor laws and regulations. No outside alcohol may be brought onto Shangri-La properties unless those beverages are kept and consumed exclusively in your rented hotel room Golfers may not bring their own alcoholic beverages for consumption on the golf course Beverages are available for legal purchase and consumption at Shangri-La while you are on property It’s not our rule It is the law – and violations could threaten the liquor license at the resort Similarly, no open containers of alcoholic beverages purchased on resort property are allowed to be taken off the property The only exception is partially consumed bottles of wine which can be recorked and taken off the property Beer may be purchased at the Ship Store and the Golf Shops for offpremises consumption as long as

they are not opened on property I cannot over-emphasize the importance of abiding by these laws for the protection of both our members and the resort.

We feature multiple dining & drinking options on property throughout the resort – Doc’s Bar & Grill, Eddy’s Lakeside Bar, The Monkey Grind, The Galley at the Anchor, the Pool Bar, the Turn House at the main clubhouse, the Canteen at The Battlefield, and the Summit Restaurant Each has a different menu to provide a variety of menu choices Shangri-La also offers several different membership options, each of which provides exclusive access to some amenities and member discounts at others I sincerely hope one of them is a perfect fit for you If you are not already a member, I look forward to having you as a member of the Shangri-La family.

For our valued members and welcomed guests, we are always here for you, anytime you have the urge to “Escape the Ordinary!”

There’s a New Chef in Town Terrell Miller takes over as Doc’s lead chef

Shangri-La opened the 2025 season with some big changes in the Food and Beverage department

The Summit got a facelift with new flooring and chairs, the menus at all venues have been updated, and one of Monkey Island’s most familiar faces has taken over operations at the newly redesigned Doc’s Bar and Grill

Chef Terrell Miller has spent over three decades in the food and beverage industry around Grand Lake

“I ran the Roadhouse for 13 years, ” said Miller “Some of the people that have been here for several years worked for me back in the day.”

Miller, a Grand Lake native said most of the clientele at Shangri-La recognize him either from the Roadhouse or the time he spent as a chef at Cherokee or Arrowhead Yacht Clubs.

Miller said his passion for cooking was developed at an early age “I have a brother and two sisters who all live in the area, ” Miller said

“I was the youngest, and there’s a big age difference between me and my brother”

Being the youngest, Miller had the opportunity to spend a lot of time in the kitchen with his mother growing up

“I guess you could say I just always had a knack for cooking ”

Director of Culinary & Beverage Experience John Havens II said he is happy to have Miller on staff and expects great improvements under

Shangri-La Director of Culinary & Beverage Experience John Havens II proved he was a seasoned pro at roasting oysters at Shangri-La’s inaugural Oyster Roast

his direction

“He’s bringing a lot of the Island with him,” said Chef Havens II. In addition to his sibling, Miller has three grown children who all live fairly close

He is excited for the opportunity to oversee operations at Doc’s Bar & Grill.

“I don’t want Doc’s to be a stop on someone ’ s destination, I want Doc’s to be the destination,” Miller said “I don’t want people to just come here to eat I want them to come here for the experience ”

Under the direction of Chef John Havens II, the dining experiences have changed throughout the resort Doc’s Bar & Grill is a local favorite, serving American Classic handhelds and live entertainment every Friday night - karaoke on Thursdays. The Galley at The Anchor is more geared towards the sports fans with an Italian flair

The Summit remains a fine dining experience exclusive to Shangri-La Members, except on Sunday when it’s open to the public

“Shuck

2 Absolutely NO outside beverages or food is allowed at the pool No ice chests No freezer bags Complimentary water is available and the pool bar is open daily from 11:00 a m -10:00 p m

3 Leave the towels! You may bring your own towels, of course, but complimentary towel service is available at the pool However, when you leave, please be sure you leave the Shangri-La towels in the dispenser at the pool

4 Children using the water slides and splash pad need to be monitored by an adult Please use common sense to ensure everyone’s safety

5 Pool hours: weather permitting, the pool is open for your enjoyment seven days a week from 8:00 a m -11:00 p m

Enjoy the summer – but please remember the few rules we have. They are important!

The Old Bulldog Band performs at Grand Lake once a year. This year it was at Shangri-La’s “Back to the Boats” Food & Wine Festival – and they did not disappoint!
Sometimes the music is just so great you MUST dance! That’s what happened at Shangri-La’s Food & Wine Festival when the Old Bulldog Band took the stage.
