CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW GOLD MEDAL WIN

Horden Together caught up with John Peace, from Horden, following his success at the recent Chelsea Flower Show after achieving a Gold Medal for an exhibit of chrysanthemums.

The impressive ten-foot-high display featured over 15,000 chrysanthemums and took two days to put together with the help of John’s wife, Allyson, and friend, Terry.

John said “It was a proud day for me and the Peace family, four generations of gardeners from Ronnie doing his veg in Greenside Avenue to buying the first greenhouse and setting my Dad off on this long journey to where we are now winning a Gold at Chelsea Flower Show, the highest achievement in the horticulture world. The gold medal will be treasured and passed down to future generations”.

Congratulations to John Peace!

Welcome

Welcome to the fourth issue of Horden Together News. This edition is being introduced by Angela Denton, Community Mission Facilitator for The Salvation Army based on Dene Street. Horden Salvation Army have played an active part in the community for 114 years.

Angela said: Horden Salvation Army is a church and community centre which provides a weekly programme of activities for people of all ages. As part of our ethos to Love God and Love Others, we offer practical and spiritual support to people struggling with poverty, homelessness or who are isolated and lonely.

A big part of what we do is using music and creative arts to reach people in the community. We run a twice weekly parent and toddler group, a weekly youth group and messy church, Sunday Worship and much more.

One of the things I really love here at Dene Street is our community garden, which has become a real hub for local residents and groups.

Through our partnership with Horden Together, we have been able to make better connections with people in our community increasing the number of people who attend our church and community centre, which in turn has led to us increasing our volunteers! Please feel free to pop in for a £1 bacon butty on a Friday morning or even just to say hello, you will aways receive a warm welcome.

EAST DURHAM TRUST UPDATE

CONNECTIONS CAFÉ

East Durham Trust have been working in partnership with South Durham Health CIC to deliver a range of accessible activities in Wheatley Hill, Blackhall and Peterlee. Peterlee’s ‘Connections Café’ is held in the Arts Café at Community House on Yoden Road and offers a relaxed space where anyone can drop in, have a cuppa and take part in social activities. These include board games, gardening and arts and crafts. Funded by County Durham Community Foundation these free sessions focus on people’s wellbeing and builds on the successful ‘Warm Welcome’ activity delivered over the autumn and winter. Residents from across Peterlee have been attending and have really enjoyed the opportunity to get out of the house and spend time with others. One person said “I would be lost without it. I live alone and there is nothing else to do in my area” another shared that “Companionship and friendliness” is what they value the most. The ‘Connections Café’ is open on a Wednesday morning from 10am till 12pm. It is free to access and anyone can drop in at any time.

ARTS CAFÉ UPDATE

The Arts Café has had a busy and exciting programme with lots of workshops, events and exhibitions. ‘Recipes for Change’ was a huge success with a range of activities such as printing, sculpting and origami lunch boxes. Residents worked with artist Lady Kitt to produce a ‘larder’ full of recipes for change for Peterlee. The project will be touring the county and will appear as part of this year’s Durham Miners Gala.

Most recently the Arts Café hosted the ‘DIY Cabaret’ night. This was an inclusive evening of cabaret performances, including comedy, music, spoken word and open mic. The evening even included a poem created on the spot using an edition of Peterlee Magazine. The cabaret marked the opening of local artist, Mack Sproates, new “Zineexhibition” on display during June. For those that may not know a ‘zine’ is a DIY handmade, or selfpublished, booklet or magazine. Anyone can make a zine about anything. They are often a way of helping marginalised voices be heard.

The exhibition includes opportunities to make a Zine so why not pop by and have a go at making your own? The Arts Café have zine kits for people to use and these can be found at the Arts Café.

If you’d like to find out more about what is happening at the Arts Café follow @eastdurhamcreates on Facebook or @edcreates on Instagram.

You can also email Ellen at ellen.ranson@eastdurhamcreates.co.uk or call 0191 569 3511

COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR COST OF LIVING

New Partnership Project Supports People in Horden and beyond.

Supported with funding from Durham County Council East Durham Trust, Durham Christian Partnership, Citizens Advice County Durham and Age UK are working together, alongside other key partners, in taking a collective approach to ensuring that people in need across County Durham can access a range of advice, guidance and support. In a huge step forward these key voluntary sector providers are working in partnership for the first time. This will see better connected support for those facing fuel and food crisis, advice for debt and benefits support and opportunities for households to learn more about household budgets through the volunteer ‘Budget Buddies’ scheme connected to Durham Foodbank, including the site in Peterlee. The joint project has already supported nearly 10,000 people with emergency food and nearly 5000 facing energy crisis.

If you are struggling with your household, finances there are a range of local organisations who can help reach the support you need. There is a monthly drop in at 10am on a Wednesday at the Social Welfare Centre. This can assist with non-urgent support such as benefits, housing, household finances and debt. There are also a range of options for grants to support household items for those who qualify.

East Durham Trust are also working with the Salvation Army, Horden who have joined other community groups in the village in being able to make referrals for crisis support, including food and energy. Look out for more information on when the Salvation Army are open for support.

CREATIVE YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES HAVE A NEW HOME IN HORDEN

Creative Youth Opportunities are thrilled to announce they have a new home in Park House, Horden Welfare Park and can report that renovation work is underway. With funding from Horden County Councillors Isabel Roberts and Ian McLean and support from Horden Parish Council the house, which once stood empty, is soon to be transformed into a colourful, creative safe haven for the children and young people of Horden.

Plans for the house include moving some of the youth provision that Creative Youth Opportunities currently delivers to the house, whilst looking at ways to secure more funding so they can offer the young people of Horden even more.

At present Creative Youth Opportunities have funding from Children in Need’s Social Action fund and from Ballinger Trust which supports the five youth sessions, including one detached session, that takes place each week.

Young people from the Young Volunteers group at Creative Youth Opportunities, which has now been running since 2015, are currently working on a social action project called ‘The Horden Kindness Movement’. On the back of Project Kindness and Hearts and Hopes of Horden the young people have an impressive 10-month plan to spread kindness across the village so watch this space!

As well as projects and youth sessions, Creative Youth Opportunities have applied to Durham County Council Fun & Food programme in the hope they can deliver a number of sessions and activities throughout the six week summer holidays.

If you would like to find out more about what Creative Youth Opportunities do you can follow us on facebook and Instagram… or pop by the house once our notice board is up to see what we have on offer.

IN PRAISE OF LIBRARIES

Growing up, I was lucky enough to live near the library and visiting it inspired and encouraged me to use my imagination. Through the stories I read I was taken to far off destinations, it gave me a taste for, and a wider understanding, of the world and its people.

The library and the books contained within gave me a chance to dream and inspired me to go out into the world and seek adventure.

As well as allowing us free access to physical books, libraries provide us with many other valuable resources including internet services, toddler groups, reading/other creative groups, a point of access to other council amenities and a link to the history and local culture of the village.

By providing these services our library offers us freedom to read, be educated, have ideas, be together in a safe space and have access to important information, fostering a sense of community and promoting social togetherness.

A gateway for knowledge and understanding, far from being outdated in the digital age, libraries can help to protect us and our children

got a great idea, then we want to hear from you!

To find out more information and how to apply, please contact Gemma Rowe at Horden Together via email Gemma.Rowe@durham.gov.uk or telephone 03000 263 387.

Grants of any size will be considered up to a maximum of £500.

Applications can be made at any time until 18 September 2023

from misinformation online by offering us access to a broader range of research including books, local papers, and historical information, helping us view things with a more critical eye.

If the library is the gateway to knowledge, then our librarians are the gatekeepers. The wonderful, warm and friendly staff at Horden library are always ready to help you find the best way to use the library services, depending on your individual interests and needs.

I’m calling on all the wonderful people of Horden, young and old to come along and support our library, by joining and taking advantage of the great range of books and other materials, or just by stopping by for a cuppa and a chat.

We have been sent this article from Horden resident Paula Wood. If you would like to share your memories, submit an article or send us some images you can do so by emailing Horden.together@durham.gov.uk

ASB IS DOWN 57.4% IN HORDEN!

Police stats will state Anti-Social Behaviour is down over 50% in the last calendar year. Would you agree? Your local Neighbourhood Team are keen to delve into the issues that are affecting you, and although the statistics will state Anti-Social Behaviour has fallen, we are very conscious that it doesn’t feel that way locally. We would urge the community to continue to report incidents via telephone on 101, in person or online via Durham Constabulary’s website. To go hand in hand with our drive to understand and tackle local issues better we are also engaging in a community engagement exercise in partnership with Horden Together, that will be launched soon. Please look out for our questionnaire and take the time to let us know your thoughts and experiences.

In other news, the first half of 2023 has been both busy and challenging with some high profile and complex investigations which have resulted in several lengthy custodial sentences for local criminals.

We continue to try and tackle the issues around the illegal use of our roads, we have had no fewer than three off-road bikes and four motor vehicles seized in the last month. Several persons have been reported to court for these offences. Please keep reporting these incidents.

In May 2023 we have seen higher levels of crime than usual that we are working hard to address.

• Shopliftings make up the majority of our theft offences

• The targeting of our unoccupied properties is an issue when it comes to burglary and criminal damage offences.

Horden Community Welfare Football Club are absolutely delighted to announce the brand-new modular seating system arrived at the football ground on Tuesday 23 May. This has been 2-3 years in the planning but it is now here and it looks brilliant.

The covered seating system comprises of 102 seats and a raised ramp with access for 2 wheelchair users, offering an elevated view of the pitch.

With the addition of the new covered seating HCWFC will now be able to offer improved match-day facilities and resources for our supporters and visitors. Hopefully, it will not be too long before the new covered standing terraced areas are in place.

As a grassroots community-based football club and charity HCWFC warmly welcome all visitors and supporters who attend and watch football matches at the home of the Marra’s at Welfare Park.

COMMUNITY BEACH CLEAN

A team of volunteers including residents, Horden Together staff, and representatives from Seascapes got together to tackle the rubbish at Horden Beach Friday 23rd June.

We managed to collect 15 bags of rubbish, including a large plastic fish box and pieces of old mining conveyor belt. This is now off the beach, so it won’t end up in the sea

HCWFC are extremely grateful to the Football Foundation and Horden Parish Council for ensuring the facilities and resources within the football ground at Welfare Park are to the highest standard, and once the covered standing areas are in place, suitable for meeting Northern League and FA Ground Regulation Standards for Tier 6 of the National Pyramid System.

The Clerk of Horden Parish Council added “Horden Parish Council as Trustee of Horden Recreation Ground registered Charity is pleased to be able to continue to support grassroots football in our community. We would also like to acknowledge the continued support of our Durham County Councillors Isabel Roberts and Ian Mclean who have contributed funding to the scheme. We are sure residents have noticed the change to the football stand and hope that many will use the facility in coming seasons”.

Thank you to all the volunteers who took part.

STOP LOAN SHARKS

Illegal lenders are preying on vulnerable members of our communities, but you can help put an end to this crime.

People in the community who loan money out to individuals and then charge massive rates to pay it back are LOAN SHARKS – NOT FRIENDS.

Today, in Horden, many people who borrow money from a Loan Shark are now being threatened and trapped into endless repayments.

DURHAM DEAFENED SUPPORT

Jane Atkinson lost her hearing suddenly over 25 years ago. She lost contact with family, friends and neighbours. She describes herself as a ‘hearing person without hearing’. Realising very little support was available to her she started looking to what she could do to help other people as well as herself, and so Durham Deafened Support was born. First registered as a charity under the name EDDHIS in 1998 and only covering East Durham. The charity now supports deafened adults and their families throughout the whole of County Durham and Darlington.

At the very beginning, the charity was run from Jane’s own sitting room and financed mostly by small funding pots. She instigated the first lip reading support group in Peterlee for local deafened and acquired funding for this. Durham Deafened Support now runs 11 such groups across the County with qualified lip-reading teachers.

Now Durham Deafened Support employs a proactive team, everyone they meet with hearing difficulties they are dedicated to help and have the respect of many other support organisations. Audiologists, Doctors and Social Services all refer people to Durham Deafened Support. It is a very unique service DDS offers. Sometimes the deafened people the team at DDS have met have not had a decent conversation for years. Communication tactic training can also be given to families to help them too, trying to stop family conflict.

They are a small team at DDS, having an administrator/ finance person, funding/finance person and 4 outreach workers, trustees and volunteers who help support Dealing with Deafness non-residential weeks. They have crafts for deafened and deaf/blind, tinnitus support, 1:1 support in people’s homes, tai chi, yoga and more. Always looking for other ways to encourage deafened people out of their comfort zones and out of the isolation associated with deafness, always looking for other support networks and information to help deafened people.

Durham Deafened Support are based in Horden Social Welfare Centre, Seventh Street, Horden. Hearing aid batteries are available during office hours. You can contact us by telephone: 0191 5183358 or email: admin@ddsupport.org.uk

HORDEN WELCOMES A NEW MEN’S GROUP

Horden Together caught up with Malcolm, known locally as Mally, to discuss his new Men’s Group ‘Mally’s Man Club’

Mally explained “I got the idea of forming the group from an old poster advertising a men’s group that had ceased due to Covid-19 and saw an opportunity to start my own. Initially the group was scheduled to run fortnightly to see how it went but attendance steadily grew so we changed the group to a weekly session”.

Mally continued “establishing the group has given me a real sense of empowerment and I’m grateful to give something back to the community, as a regular at Horden Salvation Army it seemed a no brainer to host the group there and they have been extremely supportive in helping me establish the group. The hardest part is taking that initial step through the door but once you do there is a community ready to welcome you. As the logo says, “Talking is a Victory””.

The group meet every Wednesday 6:30pm8:30pm at Horden Salvation Army the group is for men aged over 18 years. If you would like an informal chat with Mally you can contact him on 07496 828 136

HORDEN TOGETHER WELCOME NEW STAFF MEMBER

Hello readers, I’m Gemma Rowe and I’m delighted to introduce myself as the new Community Engagement Coordinator for Horden Together. Some of you may recognise me as a resident of Horden and having worked at Horden Parish Council for a number of years.

I started my role with the Horden Together team in April this year and I’m excited to bring all my knowledge of all things Horden to the role.

When I’m not at work I like walking to the beach (weather permitting!), going to gym, volunteering, and spending time with my very spoiled cat.

If you’re interested in learning more about Horden Together and their work or would like a conversation about volunteering, the Horden Together Newspaper or collaborating on a project or activity then please get in touch at Gemma.Rowe@durham.gov.uk

Whilst you’re reading the Newspaper why not check out the weekly activities and pop along to a group or activity, I look forward to seeing you at a group soon!

REFURBISHMENT & UPGRADE THORPE ROAD CEMETERY WALL & FENCING

11
Horden Parish Council has completed a refurbishment and upgrade of the boundary wall and fencing at Thorpe Road Cemetery after the wall was damaged in the 2021/22 storms. The familiar curve has been removed, new coping stones attached to the lowered wall and replacement metal railings installed in a £70k project which has been partly funded by the Durham County Council Area Action Partnership.

HEARTS AND HOPES OF HORDEN

‘Hearts & Hopes of Horden’ was part of the Partnership for People and Place project Horden Together have been working on in collaboration with East Durham Trust, East Durham Creates, Healthy Happy Places and Creative Youth Opportunities supported by Horden Parish Council. The project aimed to explore what residents of Horden think and feel about the place they live.

These conversations used prompts including a place that you like to visit, a place that needs hope and care and a place you feel safe that is not your home. The ‘Place’ that we exist in is an important part of our lives. It is the places in which we live, work and play.

Over February and March East Durham Creates supported pop up arts and cultural interventions happening across the village. All aimed at lifting the hearts of Horden. This included:

A workshop programme exploring the prompts and mapping these places using online platform ‘Placechangers’.

‘Lift Up Your Hearts’ a showing of works made by children and young people of Horden in the windows of the Park House in the Welfare Park.

‘Love IRL’ an illuminated sculpture that literally forms the heart of the work. This work by artist Stu Langley popped up in Warren Street and the Welfare Park.

‘Hearts & Hopes of Horden’ a pop-up day of art activity and a trail through the Welfare Park including new work created by young people about the place they live. There was also a series of projections onto buildings that played with the idea of place by bringing natural landscapes like the sea into the centre of the village.

‘I Come From…’ a new film poem created by Creative Youth Opportunities’ Young People together with filmmaker Carl Joyce and Katharine Goda. Visit youtu.be/ELoXO0SFMGo or scan the QR Code above.

Hundreds of local people connected in with the ‘Hearts and Hopes of Horden project and used the opportunity to celebrate what they love about their place as well as highlight what they would like to change or improve. Once again, Horden showed how culture could connect the community and bring them together in a unique and place-based way.

The Community Champion Facebook Group is a space for community minded people to support each other to make good things happen, report issues and intel and generally talk and share all things Horden!

Join like-minded community do-ers, projects, groups and people with a passion for Horden. Champions will use their own social networks to share information and improve connections between services, groups and the community.
