I have a sluggish bowel and my GP has suggested a change in diet which has helped a bit but what else could I be doing to help it along?

As you are already aware diet is crucial as is stress management. Ensure you are getting enough water-soluble fibre in your diet and if necessary take a fibre supplement such as LEPICOL or PSYLLIUM HUSKS mixed with plenty of water twice a day. Preheat oven to 180C / Gas 4 Put the milled chia seeds, flour, oats and baking powder into a bowl.

In another bowl blend together the banana, egg, dates, honey, and water.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix well, to a thick batter-like consistency.

Drop dessertspoons of the mixture on to a greased baking tray.

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until lightly browned.

Place on a baking rack and allow to cool.

The main active ingredient of antiperspirants is Aluminium. Aluminium compounds close the pores in the underarms, stopping them from sweating and thus preventing wetness. There are several reasons why we shouldn’t use antiperspirants. Firstly, it’s not very healthy to not sweat, as this is one mechanism your body uses to get rid of waste from the body.

Secondly, aluminium compounds such as aluminium chloride can cause an array of health problems in the body such as Alzheimer’s, breast cancer, kidney problems, dermatitis, bone deformations and seizures. Finally, it is also a known water pollutant, if we use products with aluminium in they can enter the water cycle, damaging wildlife.

Non-natural deodorants also contain some undesirable ingredients, such as parabens and propylene glycol. Parabens in deodorants are another chemical that have been linked to breast cancer. The presence of this in deodorants is concerning firstly because deodorant is applied so close to the breasts and secondly because parabens are what is known as an estrogenic compound. This means that it mimics estrogen and has the ability to send the same messages in the body as estrogen. One of estrogen’s roles in the body is to promote the growth of breast tissue, so an excess might lead to cancerous overgrowth.

There are also several other estrogenic compounds used in non-natural deodorants. Propylene Glycol is a neurotoxin that has been known to cause contact dermatitis, kidney and liver damage.

The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for

propylene glycol by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety warns workers to avoid skin contact with the toxic chemical “May cause eye irritation, skin irritation. Chronic exposure can cause gastro-intestinal disturbances, nausea, headache, vomiting, and central nervous depression.”

Arthritis is by far the most common joint related health issue today. Arthritis is a form of joint disorder that involves inflammation in one or more joints that causes pain and immobility, ranging from mild to severe.

Dietary Factors to Consider: Good Fats: Getting the right balance of Essential Fatty Acids is vital in managing inflammation. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are considered essential as our bodies cannot produce these fats, so we must obtain them from a healthy diet or through supplementation. Omega-6 mostly sends pro-inflammatory messages, whereas omega-3 helps calm inflammation by sending anti-inflammatory messages. To manage inflammation, I would recommend 2-3 portions of oily fish weekly (salmon, sardines, anchovies, mackerel, tuna) or taking a high quality omega-3 fish oil daily.

Make sure the fish oil you choose is 100% pure, natural and stable.

Lessen Bad Fats: Too much foods rich in Omega-6 ALA (the bad omega-6) can contribute to inflammation - so its best to lessen your intake of red meats, processed meats, vegetable oils highly refined foods (prepackaged buns, biscuits, cakes, pastries, doughnuts etc), deep fried foods, and fast food.
