A classically trained pianist, Judy Wolman received her degree in music from Washington University in St. Louis and taught vocal music and music appreciation in public and private schools. In Los Angeles, she joined the Gregg Smith Singers, a professional, classical choral group, and spent ten years touring and recording with them.

As a studio singer, Judy has made numerous recordings and sung in films and television, including Empire of the Sun, Jurassic Park, and The Incredible Hulk. She also accompanies singers and choral groups, teaches piano and voice, and directs group workshops in harmony singing and solo performance.

The inspired piano accompaniments which Judy provides add a sensitive musical quality to the Sing! Sing! Sing! Performances, evoking the beauty and emotion of each song while complementing the voice and melody line.

Judy Wolman is founder and artistic director of Sing! Sing! Sing! a non-profit organization. Sing!

Sing! Sing! Is an original concept featuring a small group of rehearsed singers who joyfully ease the audience into singing “all the songs you love to sing”. Complete lyric sheets are provided, and each song is introduced with a brief and entertaining commentary.

The American Composer Series, presented monthly at the Jazz Bakery, literally sings the praises of the songwriters of the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s. Other programs reach back to include Stephen Foster (the “Spirit of America”) and forward to the present (“Academy Award Winning Songs”).

Other venues have included the Falcon Theatre in Burbank, the Stars Theatre in Bakersfield and the Masquers Cabaret in West Hollywood. The present sing-along programs for private parties, club gatherings and churches, and have travelled to other states, including New York, Connecticut, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Missouri. There is now an East Coast branch of Sing! Sing! Sing!, and they are working toward branches in the Midwest.

The talented members of Sing! Sing! Sing! share their love and knowledge of the American Songbook and help others relate personally and aesthetically to this art form. The result is a musical bonding in a beautiful and relaxed singing experience.

Judy has been a member of the Horace Heidt community for just a couple of months. She feels that living in such a musical environment is the perfect fit for what she is currently doing in her life.

HIGH-SPEED RAIL BENEFITS CALIFORNIA’S ECONOMY California’s high-speed rail will do more than reduce air pollution and traffic congestion and provide us with a safe and easy way to travel. As the largest public infrastructure project in the nation, this $43 billion effort will also spark economic growth and create jobs.

Looking at the big picture here are eight reasons why high-speed rail is a wise investment for Californians.

1) High-speed rail will create 600,000 full-time construction jobs over the course of building the project. Over the next 25 years, 450,000 permanent jobs will be created.

2) The high-speed train represents the state’s commitment to environmental responsibility and better mobility. The rail will by-pass traffic saving annually 8 billion fewer vehicle miles traveled.

3) The high-speed train will be a legacy to California’s future.

4) Because of the low friction of steel wheels running on steel rails, railroads are inherently more energy efficient, less polluting and less expensive to operate than any vehicle carrying the same load using rubber wheels.

5) The High-Speed Rail Authority is collaborating with local, state and federal agency partners to identify solutions that deliver the most public benefit with least negative impacts.

6) Railroads are much faster than buses. It will take three hours to ride the rail from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

7) People are becoming engaged in this project in a completely new way. Public dialogue is welcome and the timing is perfect.

8) High-speed rail is a cleaner, safer and a more environmentally sound approach than building thousands of freeway miles or a series of new airports, and that is why California voters supported high-speed rail.

LEGAL NEWS YOU CAN USE

By Stephen Holzer AB 22 signed by Governor Labor unions and the ACLU won, and the business community lost, a big one when on October 9 Governor Brown signed Assembly Bill 22 (Assemblyman Tony Mendoza, D-Artesia). This legislation prohibits (with certain exceptions) employers from using credit reports as a criterion in deciding hiring decisions.

There are some exceptions to the prohibition. These exceptions include employment for a managerial position, for a position where the prospective employee would have signing authority on the bank or credit-card account of the employer and for a position where the prospective employee has regular access to cash totaling $10,000 or more during the workday.

Proponents of the new law argue, among other things, that (especially in this economy) many job applicants have credit problems caused by circumstances beyond their control, such as loss of a job because of company downsizing. Thus, per the argument, a poor credit report may have nothing to do with the prospective employee’s ability to make prudent decisions or ability diligently to handle a job.

Opponents, including the California Chamber of Commerce (which designated AB 22 as a “Job Killer” bill), argue that a credit report often provides important information reflecting on a prospective employee’s sense of responsibility and that a person who has been financially irresponsible runs a greater risk of exhibiting irresponsibility on the job, including being more likely to commit theft. According to an article appearing in the Sacramento Bee, “[e]mployee theft accounted for 40 percent of retailers’ losses nationwide, or some $15.9 billion….” See http://www.sacbee.com/2011/10/12/3975456/credit-check-law-has-fans-foes.html (although the article did not specify the time period for these figures, presumably this was on an annual basis).

Another point questioning the legislation is the argument that California can ill-afford further to hamper employees when they are apparently already fleeing the State in droves. However, supporters can in response point to the fact that similar legislation has already been implemented or is proposed in about 28 States and that California is therefore not really placing itself at a competitive disadvantage in adopting AB 22.

Pension reform—well, maybe one day Public employee pension reform has long been a topic. A study cited last year by the Los Angeles Times pegged unfunded public-pension debt in the State at $500 billion.

However, the Legislature has found very little willpower with which to address the issue. Senate Bill 827 (Senator Simitian, D-Palo Alto/Santa Cruz) addresses the issue but provides merely that "This bill would declare the intent of the Legislature to convene a conference committee to craft responsible, comprehensive legislation to reform state and local pension systems in a manner that reflects both the legitimate needs of public employees and the fiscal circumstances of state and local governments."

Governor signs bill limiting car seizures Up until now under State law, if the police set up a sobriety checkpoint and found that the driver were intoxicated, police could (in addition to arresting the driver) impound the car. That was, up until now.

With the passage and signature by Governor Brown of Assembly Bill 1389 (Assembly Member Michael Allen, D-Santa Rosa), this is no longer the case. Under 1389, if the police do not find impairment, then the driver will be allowed to leave even if the driver lacks a driver’s license. Additionally, any driver making a legal turn to avoid the checkpoint cannot be stopped unless the police have at least a reasonable suspicion that the driver has done something wrong.

Proponents of the new law say that up until now, low-income people and people in the country illegally (who by law cannot get licenses) have been unfairly disadvantaged by police checkpoints which end up taking these drivers’ cars to impound. Opponents argue that safety-enforcement measures are best left to officer discretion and local conditions rather than to a “one size fits all” State uniform policy.

Los Angeles already adopted a rule similar to 1389; but this legislation, as indicated, now enforces the new standards Statewide.

Aunt Anna’s Struffoli

Ingredients Dough: 2 cups flour, plus extra for dusting 1 large lemon, zested (about 2 teaspoons) 1/2 large orange, zested (about 2 teaspoons) 3 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 stick (2 ounces) unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces, at room temperature 3 large eggs 1 tablespoon white wine, such as pinot grigio 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Canola oil, for frying 1 cup honey 1/2 cup sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 1/2 cups hazelnuts, toasted (see Cook's Note) Vegetable oil cooking spray Sugar sprinkles, for decoration Powdered sugar, for dusting, optional

Directions For the dough: In the bowl of a food processor, pulse together 2 cups of flour, lemon zest, orange zest, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Add the butter and pulse until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Add the eggs, wine, and vanilla. Pulse until the mixture forms into a ball. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Cut the dough into 4 equal-sized pieces. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each piece of dough until 1/4-inch thick. Cut each piece of dough into 1/2-inch wide strips. Cut each strip of pastry into 1/2-inch pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a small ball about the size of a hazelnut. Lightly dredge the dough balls in flour, shaking off any excess. In a large heavy-bottomed saucepan, pour enough oil to fill the pan about a third of the way. Heat over medium heat until a deep-frying thermometer inserted in the oil reaches 375 degrees F. (If you don't have a thermometer a cube of bread will brown in about 3 minutes.). In batches, fry the dough until lightly golden, about 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.

(The rested and quartered dough can also be rolled on a floured work surface into 1/2-inch thick logs and cut into equal-sized 1/2-inch pieces.

The dough pieces can then be rolled into small balls and fried as above).

In a large saucepan, combine the honey, sugar, and lemon juice over medium heat. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved, about 3 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat. Add the fried dough and hazelnuts and stir until coated in the honey mixture. Allow the mixture to cool in the pan for 2 minutes.

Spray the outside of a small, straight-sided water glass with vegetable oil cooking spray and place in the center of a round platter. Using a large spoon or damp hands, arrange the struffoli and hazelnuts around the glass to form a wreath shape. Drizzle any remaining honey mixture over the struffoli. Allow to set for 2 hours (can be made 1 day in advance).

Decorate with sprinkles and dust with powdered sugar, if using. Remove the glass from the center of the platter and serve.

Cook's Note: To toast the hazelnuts, arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake in a preheated 350 degrees F oven until lightly toasted, 8 to 10 minutes. Cool completely before using.

Beryl Davis dies at 87; British-born singer became a star in America The daughter of English band leader Harry Davis, she made her U.S. debut after World War II, singing on Bob Hop’s radio program. She later performed with Frank Sinatra and Benny Goodman during the big-band era.

Beryl Davis, a British-born singer who became a star in America performing with Frank Sinatra and Benny Goodman during the big-band era, died Friday 10/28, in Los Angeles. She was 87.

The cause of death was complications from Alzheimer’s disease, according to the family spokesperson Greg Purdy.

The daughter of English band leader Harry Davis, she was born in Plymouth, England, on March 17, 1924 and began performing with her father at the age of 3. At 12 she was appearing with Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt in their all-string jazz band, Quintette du Hot Club de France.

During World War II she sang with Grappelli and pianist George Shearing in a group who performed in London clubs throughout the Blitz. Toward the end of the war, she began singing with Glenn Miller’s Army Air Force Band.

She made her American debut after the war, singing on Bob Hope’s radio program. She later joined Frank Sinatra on the radio show “Your Hit Parade,” which led to engagements with Goodman and other prominent orchestra leaders, including Vaughn Monroe and David Rose.

In the 1950’s she formed a vocal quartet with Jane Russell, Connie Haines and Della Russell that recorded the hit gospel song “Do Lord.” Rhonda Fleming later replaced Della Russell.

In 1974, Davis joined the cruise ship circuit, performing mostly on the Princess Line for the next three decades. During this time she continued to appear in nightclubs, singing standards such as “When the World Was Young,” “Here’s That Rainy Day,” “Baby Baby All The Time,” and “I’ll Be Seeing You.” In a 1975 review, Times music critic Leonard Feather wrote that she “reminds you of the days when nightclub singers of a certain special quality were called chanteuses.”

Davis’ 1948 marriage to Hollywood radio and television personality Peter Potter ended in divorce in 1965. Her companion of 35 years, Buck Stapelton, died in 2003. She is survived by three children, Bill Moore, Merry Moore and Melinda Moore Garber; a sister; and two grandchildren.

Guitarist Al Vescovo has died following lingering pulmonary difficulties in Van Nuys, at the age of 75.

Al was widely respected within the community of musicians and and is fondly remembered as a willing tutor and mentor to those getting started in his field. He primarily worked as a studio musician and his name is found as a contributing guitarist on the backs of dozens of albums by the major entertainers entertainers of our time. He contributed to scores of movies and TV soundtracks and also released several albums of his own featuring featuring original compositions.

Al Vescovo was born February 27, 1936 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Tennessee. Before he was old enough to learn the word “depression” depression” it was over and the boom of WW II paid off for him in the form of a Gene Autry guitar for his 7th birthday.

His fingers were too small to make chords against the frets so he he learned to use a short metal bar to slide along the neck. Thus was born what would eventually become his first love in music making: the pedal steel guitar.

It was a different time in America but even in 1949 it was unusual for a youngster of 13 to enter the world of grown men the way Al Vescovo did. His childhood ended as his teen years years were beginning. Al became part of a small band playing at various “hamburger and beer” regulars on a beer” joints around Memphis. Soon he and his adult friends were regulars couple of radio stations. After high school he left Memphis to see see a bit of the world and landed in Denver. There was plenty of work there for a goodgood-looking young man with talent so he put down some roots. He met and married the lovely Norma Jean Martines. Soon came a daughter they named Frankie, Frankie, then a son named John.

His career opportunities expanded with a move to Los Angeles Angeles in 1962. His precision and professionalism made him a soughtsought-after studio musician. But when his friend Johnny Burnette offered offered him a working tour of Europe he couldn’ couldn’t say no. Then came a year’ year’s work in Hawaii. His third child, Gina was born. Another tour… tour… this time with Spike Jones and his novelty band. Then came a three year stint at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas. When the Vegas gig ended Al returned to Los Angeles where he made his home in Van Nuys. He played played in numerous musical shows such as “Fiddler on the Roof” Roof”, “Hair” Hair”, and the “Will Rogers Follies” Follies”. When he wasn’ wasn’t on the road , Vescovo remained a much sought after studio musician. He worked for CBS, NBC, Warner Bros., and Fox; and with many top names including The Beach Boys, Johnny Mathis, Lawrence Welk, Stan Kenton, Frank Sinatra, Sinatra, Pat Boone. Al also played for movie soundtracks and television programs such as the Johnny Carson Show, The Smothers Brothers Show, The Sonny and Cher Show, and appeared on the unit. He also enjoyed the occasional occasional small acting job that would come his way.

He became a member of SAG and was always delighted to go on auditions auditions for small movie rolls.

After working as a professional guitarist for more than 65 years, Al’ Al’s major concern for his profession was the encroachment of electronics and computers replacing musical instruments instruments and jobs in the industry. He saw the fading of opportunities for musicians and feared the loss of high level musicianship that would no doubt follow.

Over the past two years, Al suffered medical problems with both his heart and lungs. Despite this he continued to play with his friends each Thursday evening at Casey’ Casey’s in Sherman Oaks. But things took a bad turn in late summer and his condition worsened. Last Tuesday October 11, 2011 while in the company of his three children and his wife of 53 years Al Vescovo died.

Al is survived by his wife Norma Jean, his daughters Frankie Frankie Sims and Gina Piscitello and Maya Piscitello.

Pianist played with jazz greats!

Marty Harris, 77, a pianist who performed with such jazz and and pop greats as Benny Goodman and Diana Ross, died of colon cancer Thursday at his Toluca Lake home, said his wife, Bonnie.

Born Dec. 9, 1933 in New Jersey, Harris was reared in Florida Florida and studied the piano in high school. He served in the Navy in the early 1950’ 1950’s and moved to the San Fernando Valley in 1961.

Since the 50’ 50’s, he had played with such jazz names as Woody Herman, Clark Terry, Terry, Bob Cooper and Anita O’ O’Day. Harris also accompanied singer Tom Jones and frequently performed performed locally with trumpeter and singer Jack Shelton.

Drawn to the rhythms of jazz from a young age, Harris told told the Times in 1977: “I liked the beat; it just felt good.

Then someone showed me how to play a little bit, and I got to be pretty good.” good.”

IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT Drinking and Driving Costs More Than You Think (Article thanks to AAA "Westways") The holiday season brings many festive occasions with friends and families; unfortunately, it also brings increased risk on our roadways. Nearly 18,000 people were killed or injured in alcoholrelated crashes in California in November and December from 2005 through 2009, according to Auto Club research.

The Auto Club estimates that a first-offense arrest can cost a driver more than $12,000 in fines, vehicle storage, alcohol-education classes, the victim restitution fund, DMV license re-issue fees, attorney fees, and insurance costs. Add to that booking and fingerprinting fees and interlockdevice costs, which vary around the state. If you're under age 21, you're in even more financial trouble; your total cost can easily reach $17,000, largely because increases to insurance premiums are typically greater than for older drivers.

Also, calculate the cost of time spent in jail or the hospital, having to take off work for court or other related appointments, repairing or replacing a vehicle, the hassle of living without a driver's license, and other legal liabilities if you're sued. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that drinking and driving costs society more than $45 billion per year.

Of course, drinking and driving exacts an even more important toll that can't be measured in monetary terms -- the cost of people injured or killed, perhaps the driver's loved ones. Do your part this holiday season by participating in the AAA Take the Pledge Campaign and commit to not drinking and driving. Visit takethepledge.aaa.com.

Here are some tips on how to celebrate safely. ● Plan ahead and designate a non-drinking driver before any holiday party or celebration begins. ● If you're hosting a party, be a responsible host and offer alcohol-free beverages and food. ● If possible, use public transportation to get to and from holiday gatherings. ● Reserve a hotel room near your party or stay at a local friend's house rather than trying to make it home. ● Take advantage of the Auto Club's free Tipsy Tow program, available to members and nonmembers.

Tipsy Tow Statistics show that deaths from car crashes increase significantly around the time of New Year's Eve festivities. That's why the Auto Club will again sponsor the New Year's Eve Tipsy Tow program, which offers free rides to drivers who have been drinking. The service, which is available to non-members as well as members, will transport an impaired driver to his or her home up to seven miles from the point of pick-up.
