YOUR FUTURE, it’s our priority. It doesn’t have to be daunting. We will help you every step of the way to get the most out of your time at Hopwood Hall College. Everything we do at College ties in to how we can help you to get where you want to be, whether that is going to university or moving into employment.

We’re there for you

Your day

It is very important to us that you feel happy and supported throughout your time at college. You will have a Progress Tutor (PT) who will help you to succeed, both in your studies and personally. Your PT will be a really important contact for you throughout your time at College. PT’s are committed to your progress and development and are on hand to help you at all times.

Life at college may be a little different from what you’re used to at school. Classes are usually smaller and you’ll have the freedom and flexibility to choose from a range of study programmes which will allow you to focus on what you really enjoy.

You’ll attend regular development sessions with your PT, this is your chance to talk about any welfare or personal issues you may have. No question is too small and no problem too big – confidential advice and support is what they do best. Your PT will act as the linchpin between your studies and the wider college community network of support. They will help develop your personal, social, academic and employability skills.

Exceptional staff, exceptional students We believe that exceptional teaching and learning begins with exceptional staff. Together with our talented and hard-working students they make up our successful and thriving college community.

You’ll be given responsibility for your own learning and studies, but don’t let that worry you - you’ll have Academic Tutors and Progress Tutors to help keep you on track every step of the way. Your day will be full with a timetable that will be made up of classes, tutorials, enrichment options, work experience and private study time. There are iLearn Centres on both campuses which you can use to complete assignments on site, cafes to catch up with friends and enrichment activities to fill your free time. You won’t be short of things to keep you busy and help you to live college life to the full.

Investing in you We continue to invest in our facilities across both college sites to ensure that all students have access to the very best equipment and resources to help them succeed. We keep our facilities and equipment up to date to reflect the developments in industry and business.

Your course, our facilities, our wide range of enrichment opportunities and extra curricular activities are all designed to develop you academically & personally. 6

Join the technical skills revolution and take your learning to the next level

13

Please note that all details are correct at time of printing.

Introducing T-Levels T-Levels have been described as the biggest overhaul in post-school education for 70 years. Hopwood Hall was selected to introduce T-levels from September 2021. These pioneering programmes represent a brilliant opportunity for school leavers. T-Levels are shaped by employers and benefit from the unique insights of industry leaders. This means learners are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to get a head start in the modern jobs market.

What is a T-Level? Delivered over a two-year period, T-Levels provide an excellent alternative to A-Levels and are aimed at 16 to 19-year-olds who would rather study work-related courses than traditional academic subjects.

They have been launched to counter the long-held assumption that only A-Levels can lead to a degree and a fulfilling job. It’s worth noting that as a T-Level student you will still be able to progress to university or higher-level technical qualifications. T-Levels have been created by national panels made up of expert employers. They are designed to deliver the necessary skills required to strengthen and grow the UK economy.

OF THE FU URE MEET THE WORKFORCE OF THE FU URE They provide a mix of industry-specific technical knowledge and practical skills; relevant maths, English and digital skills as well as a work placement of at least 45 days.

MEET THE WORKFORCE

These two-year, level 3 technical education courses follow GCSEs and are revolutionising technical education in the UK. Developed in close collaboration with employers, this means that content directly meets the needs of industry and prepares students for work or university. T-Levels are ideal if you have finished your GCSEs and want the knowledge and experience to give your career a head start and get straight into employment, an apprenticeship or higher education. T-Levels components include: employability skills, numeracy, literacy and digital skills, concepts and theories, and occupational specialisms.

As an integral part of the T-Level, learners complete a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days) in an industry placement, where your focus will be on developing practical and technical skills. The placement will be with an employer in a real life working environment. You’ll spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% on industry placement giving you the chance to experience a real workplace setting while continuing your studies.

Industry Placements High quality industry placements are an integral part of the new T-Level programmes. Industry placements are crucially important in enabling you to gain the valuable skills needed to progress onto employment. Industry placements will be a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days). Placements can be undertaken as a block, over college holidays for example, or as individual days. This arrangement depends on what works best for the student and employer. Industry placements give you the opportunity to develop your practical and technical skills in a role directly relevant to your vocational course. At Hopwood Hall College we believe that science has something to offer every student, and that everyone needs some level of relevant scientific understanding. That’s why ‘Science at Hopwood’ has developed a suite of qualifications at Level 2 which facilitates the transition to BTEC Level 3 Applied Science Foundation and Extended Diploma. Students of all abilities can realise their full potential and progress to Higher Education or scientific apprenticeships. What will the course involve? From the start of the course you will work towards AQA, GCSE Combined Science: Synergy, whilst studying GCSE Maths and English (currently Linear, Edexcel). Theory based lessons and practical investigations are an integral part of the study program. The remainder of the program is dedicated to developing your skills, knowledge and building your confidence in different scientific disciplines, digital media and interpersonal skills in preparation for the level 3 science route or other level 3 study. What will I learn? The content has been divided into two main sections, which contain connections between areas of biology, physics and chemistry that sit together as part of good science.

Life and environmental sciences (4.1 - 4.4) • 4.1 Building blocks: from atoms to cells, behaviour and transport on the small scale. • 4.2 Transport over larger distances: systems in animals and plants and how these systems interact. • 4.3 Interactions with the environment: the effects of factors in the environment on organisms, how our choices affect our health. • 4.4 Explaining change: how organisms, species, living and non-living systems change over time.

Physical sciences (4.5 - 4.8) • 4.5 Building blocks for understanding: organising, patterns, properties and analysis. • 4.6 Interactions over small and large distances: strong and weak forces between atoms, molecules and larger structures and how they interact. • 4.7 Movement and interactions: rates of change of motion and direction of large and small objects, and chemical changes. • 4.8 Guiding Spaceship Earth towards a sustainable future: resources of materials and energy. The GCSE Synergy Science is for school leavers aged 16-18. If you are over 18 an Access Level 2 would be the more suitable study programme for you.
