Meet Instructor

Carmen’s drumming passion began in college where she performed regularly at Truman University Jazz Coffee House with drum and guitar sets.

Carmen found her passion for Congas and Latin percussion through her family travels to Mexico, Puerto RIco, and the Caribbean islands. She studied with Latin Jazz “conguero” Dave (Izzy) Isreal, a performer in the Twin Cities music scene.

Carmen is excited to invite beginning and experienced drummers to check out a new hobby in a fun, accepting environment. Learn to express yourself in a new way and see where the journey takes you.

Sharon worked for more than 20 years in the social work field for residential treatment and nonprofit agencies. While she loved her work, in her fifties, she wanted to find a new path. After much research, she found a way to use her experience and natural abilities to connect with people — she completed rigorous training and certification to become a Certified Professional Life Coach.

Sharon’s style of compassion and knowledge, with fun and humor thrown in, allow her workshop participants to find the skills and drive to make life changes. She strongly believes that everyone deserves to live a life they love, and that they have the power to make change happen.

Teri is a holistic nutrition consultant and healthy lifestyle coach, inspiring clients to tap into the secrets of nature and the power of real food to feel better, look younger, and live longer. She is passionate about healthy living and knows that looking good and feeling great start on the inside.

Teri’s clients come to her for help with many challenges including weight loss, stress reduction, digestive issues, and overall wellness.

She has a B.S. in holistic nutrition and is a Certified Natural Health Professional. Teri also creates and conducts healthy living workshops for groups and companies.

From the Coordinator Learn to embrace change in your work and personal life and make the transition to a better you.” — unknown I’ve personally experienced many changes these past few months — some exciting and some painful. On a positive note, the youngest of our four sons graduated from college in December — hard to believe that we reached that milestone when it seems like just yesterday that I was attending Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) classes at Harley Hopkins Family Center. On the other hand, I had some significant losses that threw my life into disarray, a little like a wild roller coaster ride!

Times like these always help me think about how we can resist change, or do our best to embrace it and try to draw strength from the belief that change can transform us into a stronger, better person.

Many of us think about changing our lives as we approach the New Year. I always feel motivated hearing your stories about how a Community Education class inspired you to make changes and helped transform your life. Check out our stories of students who have made changes in their weight and overall health through classes like Community Weight Loss Challenge and fitness classes like Kettlebells. Think about transforming your wardrobe with one of Deb Vick’s classes (page 23), or change your peace of mind by finally getting a will written or plan for your financial future (see page 27).

One exciting change in our department is the addition of our new Adult Programs Assistant, Leah (pictured above left), to our Adult Enrichment team. Leah and I look forward to your participation in our classes in 2013!

Bring the color of the world to your palette Drawing From Observation

New! Painting with Pastels

Develop techniques for drawing what you see in exciting and expressive ways! Gain confidence as you learn or enhance your drawing skills with Jim as your guide. Explore the endless possibilities of different media ­— charcoal, graphite, and ink, and how to use them on different surfaces. You will create drawings and learn how to evaluate and talk about art in a positive environment. Take your drawings to a new level, painting with vibrant color in oil or dry (soft) pastels. Pastels are a great, inexpensive way to experiment with color! This class will study techniques used by Impressionist, Modern, and Contemporary artists to achieve glowing results on white or tinted paper. Learn the art of seamless 3-D wet felting using wool roving and a variety of other natural fibers. Choose bright or natural colors, then “sculpt” your vessel into any shape from organic to contemporary.

Discover the mystery of Raku pottery as you learn about this beautiful Japanese clay firing technique. Raku creates wonderful, unique colors and luster, unlike any other type of pottery. This class will give you a taste of what Raku firing is like. Students who have at least a basic knowledge of pottery, either wheel- or hand-building, will enjoy this class. Hand-build your pieces in the first two sessions, glaze the third session, and fire your piece outside in the final session. This class will help you develop and expand your creativity using acrylic paint. Learn about design and color principles while building skills and confidence. Explore a variety of painting techniques with the brush and other tools. Instructor will demonstrate how to display your finished artwork as well. **

Calligraphy II – Italic

Digital grounds are materials you apply to any surface you can run through an inkjet printer and make a print of your own photograph, drawing, or collage. Students will work with a variety of surfaces to run through an inkjet printer (provided) and explore ideas for incorporating these printed images into mixed media artwork. $10 supply fee paid to instructor at class. **

Take your calligraphy to the next level. We will review and refine the letter shapes, learn double stroke capitals, use color, and create small projects that showcase your skills. Dream of spending a day devoted to creativity? Let your creative self out in this day-long workshop designed to transform the way you express yourself. Creative art journaling is what happens when you take a journal combined with a sketchbook, throw in a dash of scrapbooking, add photos, and then paint, draw, or doodle (or all three)!

The instructor will have demonstrations of many different techniques and a variety of collage materials for you to use. Natural Dyes from Plants Workshop Karen Rognsvoog

Discover the range of colors that can be achieved by learning some of the subtleties of nature’s palette. Students will explore how to extract colors from plant materials, and how to use mordants. Capture the light with mosaics and glass

Stained Glass – Lead

New! Mosaic Glass Window or Table Lamp

Learn the luminous art of stained glass as you build your own small window panel in this one-day workshop. Explore the fundamentals of stained glass window construction – from cutting glass to assembling and soldering your window panel. Bring to class: a ¾" x 11-¼" x 12" soft wood board, hammer, 80- or 100-watt soldering iron (not gun), an empty pop can, and a bag lunch. $55 materials fee payable to instructor at first class.

Add some color to your world with stained glass. Brighten your day with an 8.5" x 11" window, or light the night with a classic 9" tall square cylinder tabletop light. The first week, complete the prep work, select your design, and start the mosaic process. Week two is a messy grouting night, so dress for mess and bring some old terry towels.

Select your project and register for that section. The materials fees, payable to instructor at class, are $15 (window) or $25 (lamp).

We’ll also make: Egg Rolls stuffed with pork, shrimp, and vegetables, served with Hot Mustard and Sweet and Sour Sauce for dipping, traditional Fried Rice – an excellent accompaniment to Beef and Pea Pods stir-fried with mushrooms in a rich sauce.

Prepare a rustic Tuscan winter meal that is sure to please the palate. We’ll make five separate dishes using authentic Tuscan recipes: Bruschetta with White Beans, Penne with Porcini Mushroom Sauce, Pork Loin with Balsamic Vinegar and Soffritto accompanied by Roasted Vegetables, and for dessert, an Almond and Orange Biscotti. Monday Night Yoga

Hatha-Vinyasa Fusion is a fun, active class blending gentle vinyasa and hatha yoga styles. The class combines static postures with gentle vinyasa flow and is a great implement to a healthy lifestyle. It includes warm-up, stretching, balancing and strengthening poses. The sequence moves at a moderate pace and encourages the cultivation of breath and body awareness, mindfulness, and relaxation. We are the outdoor health club. We meet Monday and Thursday evenings at a variety of parks, parkways, and wildlife sanctuaries to help you do your fitness walking on one of more than 100 local trails around the Twin Cities. Then, join us for a healthy picnic or potluck. On weekends we venture farther away to places like Red Wing’s Barn Bluff, White Water State Park and Jay Cooke State Park. We have nearly 170 events per year. We will walk at the first meeting.

At this level, emphasis will be on learning to project the weight rather than performing a lift. No matter what your age, give your loved ones an important gift by creating two legal documents – a Health Care Directive and a Power of Attorney – these documents are vitally important in the event you become incapacitated and cannot make decisions for yourself. A Health Care Directive (akin to the old “Living Will”) is a legal document that communicates your health care wishes and allows you to name someone to make health care decisions for you when you cannot speak for yourself. A Power of Attorney allows you to choose someone to handle your finances and property, and is effective immediately upon signing. Are you planning travel to a Spanish-speaking country or would you simply like to converse with Spanish-speaking friends, co-workers, or clients? Packed with interactive, lively activities, the class emphasizes oral communication, along with basic reading and writing skills. You will gain the tools and confidence to communicate in Spanish.

Workbook is included in the class fee.

Do you need to know some Chinese for business or pleasure? Learn the essentials of Mandarin Chinese by listening, speaking, reading, and writing interactively. Topics include the “pinyin” pronunciation system, common greetings, directions, daily activities, food, and more. You will be able to carry on simple conversations by the end of the class. The instructor teaches Mandarin in a variety of settings and is the author of a series of books on Chinese.

You may send a friend in your place if, at the last minute, you find you are unable to attend your class.

Residents of Hopkins School Districts, 62 years and older, and Hopkins Public Schools employees are eligible for some discounts as follows: • For cooking classes, may reduce fee by $5.

• For pottery classes, may reduce fee by $25.

• For most other classes, the discount is one-half the regular fee not including materials or textbook fees. Exceptions include all computer classes, trips and other courses as noted in the description.

and having a lot of fun! Inspired, they decided to try another of Carol’s classes, Artisan Breads. Along with Dianne and John, fifteen other eager community education students joined Carol to learn the secrets of how to make savory breads using an easy dough recipe that’s mixed up in minutes and can be stored in the refrigerator.
