Welcome to our kitchen at Hopkins Community Education. Whether you’re entertaining with friends, sharing meals with family, or exploring global cooking techniques — expand your recipe repertoire, and kick your cooking skills up a notch.

Meet Instructor

Jana Mora

Jana Mora is a professional dancer, dance coach, teacher, and choreographer with over 35 years of teaching and performing experience.

She and has taught in colleges, universities, and performing art schools throughout the country, as well as at her own studio, Gypsy Fire Dance Studio, at Indian River Charter High School Schumann School for the Visual and Performing Arts.

Specializing in Flamenco, Zambra Mora, and Flamenco Fusion, Jana has appeared nationwide in theatres, concerts, television, commercials, and films. Jana is passionate about dance and sharing her knowledge with students.

Jim Clark

Jim Clark, an award-winning painter, has a passion for art and teaching. He received his art degree at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. He has also studied through the Cours de Civilisation Franรงaise de la Sorbonne and at the Academie de Port-Royal in Paris.

His belief in the communicative powers of art shapes his teaching philosophy. He is an enthusiastic instructor who excels at helping students discover their artistic potential.

A Minnetonka native, he lived in Alaska for over a decade, and returned to Minnesota to enjoy the warm winters. He is active as a member of the Hopkins Center for the Arts and the Glen Lake Optimists club.

Lisa Galbraith Heyl

Lisa Galbraith Heyl is a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique and a teaching member of the American Society of the Alexander Technique (AmSAT); and has been teaching for over 26 years. She teaches private and group classes and workshops.

Lisa's background lies in choreography, dance, musical performance, and competitive sports.

She teaches through community education programs, fitness centers, and corporations.

She enjoys working with anyone who wants to enhance their well-being and reduce stress.

Greetings and best wishes as we prepare to enter a new year ripe with possibility. I hope you have great plans and lofty goals for the year ahead.

Did you know that Forbes magazine has named Minnesota one of the top five happiest states in the nation, while a recent Gallup survey puts us in the top three? Perhaps that’s not all that surprising, but it is great news for those of us lucky to call this place our home.

Why are we in our ‘happy place?' Because we understand that happiness is a deep state of meaningfulness and purpose, rather than a passing mood — that happiness is rooted in strong social ties, meaningful work and engagement, and an active culture. These things are true for us in our local neighborhoods, and Community Education is an intentional partner in your happiness. We are here to provide you with social ties that lead to enduring bonds with neighbors and friends. We bring you meaningful ways to get involved and engaged. We strive to provide you with outlets to live an active life.

Sharpie markers are everywhere! Create beautiful silk painted effects on scarves or T-shirts using Sharpies and alcohol paints. Optional silk scarves will be available for purchase in class for $12 each in limited quantities.

Japanese Shibori Karen Rognsvoog

Shibori is a Japanese term that means to bind, wrap, fold, twist, stitch, or clamp to create a design on fabric. By manipulating the fabric, the dye only partially penetrates into tightly compressed cloth, creating intricate color patterns within the folds. The effects are often surprising, and each piece of Shibori is a work of art. Learn this easy and popular mosaic glass technique! Create a colorful mosaic mirror, or make a vibrant address sign for your home. Discover resources and supplies, and explore cutting techniques. Re-purpose and recycle a thrift store lamp into a one-of-akind birdbath, or use hangers to make a swinging spa for your feathered friends. Pointed Pen Calligraphy Kris MacDonald

Copperplate is a beautiful script style of calligraphy that gets its unique look from the use of a flexible, pointed pen nib.

Indicative of Victorian times or business correspondence (before the typewriter), this small, elegant script is fun to write and looks lovely when used for addressing envelopes or place cards. Begin by learning traditional copperplate letter forms, and then push them into the 21st century by altering the letter shapes to make them funky and current. Create a ceramic bowl for the 17th annual Empty Bowls event on March 24 at the Hopkins Center for the Arts. Empty Bowls is an international event to fight hunger. Communities make ceramic bowls, which are sold at fund-raising events in exchange for a simple meal of soup and bread. The funds raised support our community food shelves. Participate in the Empty Bowls event by enrolling in this class — no pottery experience is necessary. Each participant will build two bowls by hand — one to donate to the Empty Bowls event and one to keep. Satisfying dinners to make and savor Tuscany Winter Menu

Just for the Halibut

Prepare a rustic Tuscan winter meal that is sure to please the palate. We'll make five separate dishes using authentic Tuscan recipes: Bruschetta with White Beans, Penne with Porcini Mushroom Sauce, Pork Loin with Balsamic Vinegar and Soffritto accompanied by Roasted Vegetables, and for dessert, an Almond and Orange Biscotti. This class will include a discussion of wine options to serve with the meal.

The delicate flavor of halibut is a perfect fish for creating delicious dishes. Mozzarella Cheese & Yogurt for Beginners

Learn to make savory, healthy breads using dough mixed in minutes and stored for up to two weeks in your refrigerator. Discover the basic theory of artisan breads using wet dough. Bake a loaf in class to take home, plus mix a batch of dough to make more bread at home. Receive recipes for various artisan breads. Taste-test rye bread and multigrain in class. Beginning Flamenco Dancing

Dance to ancient and modern rhythms. Tone your body with graceful and beautiful dance moves! Learn the basic moves, combinations, and finger cymbals. Finger cymbals are available for use. Please bring a hip scarf. This class is level 1-2. No previous dance experience necessary. Prerequisite to intermediate-level class.

Learn the passionate, expressive dance of the Gypsies of Andalusia Spain. This beginner class will cover the basics of Flamenco dance: arm work, hand work, posture, palmas (rhythmic clapping), skirt work, poses, and footwork. Class begins with a 15 minute warm-up, followed

by Flamenco technique, Flamenco dancing, cool down, and stretching. This class is aerobic in nature. Kids & Company & L.E.A.D.

Kids & Company is Hopkins Public Schools’ premiere before- and after-school care program for children in kindergarten through grade 6. A fee-based program, Kids & Company is offered in each of the school district’s elementary schools and is open M-F, 6:30 a.m.–6:15 p.m.

Kids & Company offers flexible scheduling, non-school days, and summer options. Kids & Company is accredited through the Minnesota After School Accreditation Project.

L.E.A.D. for Junior High Students Designed for 7-8 graders, L.E.A.D. will encourage leadership, making a difference, positive social interaction, and most of all, lots of fun! Junior High L.E.A.D. is a student-driven, fee-based afterschool program for 7th and 8th graders. L.E.A.D. is located at North Junior High this school year. West Junior High students can ride the activity bus to North Junior High after school for L.E.A.D.

JazzMN Orchestra presents Pete Christlieb In the Hopkins High School Auditorium Pete Christlieb is a jazz bebop, West Coast jazz and hard bop tenor saxophonist. He is most memorable as the longtime jazz tenor for the Tonight Show Band led by Doc Severinsen. Christlieb has worked alongside artists such as Tom Waits, Chet Baker, Count Basie, Bill Holman, and Natalie Cole, and he performed the legendary sax solos on the Steely Dan tunes "Deacon Blues" and "FM".

Residents of Hopkins School Districts, 62 years and older, and Hopkins Public Schools employees are eligible for some discounts as follows: • For cooking classes, may reduce fee by $5.

• For pottery classes, may reduce fee by $25.

• For most other classes, the discount is one-half the regular fee not including materials or textbook fees. Exceptions include all computer classes, trips and other courses as noted in the description.

• Hopkins Public Schools employees are limited to one discounted class per session.

• No discounts for classes at Hopkins Activity Center or Minnetonka Senior Center In addition, there are occasional “promotional discounts” that are available to individuals subscribed to Hopkins Community Education’s E-Club. You can subscribe to E-Club (to receive e-newsletters and special discounts) at www.HopkinsCommunityEd.org.

Health Plan Discounts

All UCare Minnesota or Metropolitan Health Plan (MHP) members may take up to a $15 discount per class on most classes. Members must be on Ucare or MHP at the time of registration and through the duration of the class. Indicate ID number(s) on the registration form.

Community Education has limited fee assistance available to School District residents who qualify and are unable to pay the full registration fee. For information and application, please call 952-988-4070.

Inclement Weather Information

• If the Hopkins School District is closed due to bad weather, then Community Education classes and activities are cancelled.
