It is hard to believe that it’s been 50 years since we last walked up the hill. Much water has since flown under the bridge since then taking with it my hair and depositing body fat. Actually that didn’t work too badly since I now weigh what I should have in high school!

Upon retiring, my wife and I built our dream home on the intracoastal waterway in Swansboro, North Carolina. I retrained in Diagnostic Radiology and have been working as a contract radiologist at Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune for the last six years. The ability to still care for our brave Marines and Sailors gives me great I entered the Navy upon graduation from Harvard satisfaction. grandsons and live only a couple of hours away in Cary, North Carolina. Therefore, we get ample opportunity to visit with the grandsons at their soccer and basketball games. They reciprocate in the summer, spending several weeks at our “Beach House.”

Sue, who attended our senior Prom, has been a superb wife and mother. She, unfortunately, contracted Parkinson’s Disease about 15 years ago, and we are both learning to cope with a chronic, debilitating disease.

It frustrates her not to be able to fully participate in her grandsons’ activities. However, she is indeed a trooper taking her walker up to 6,000 feet in the Swiss Alps last October and we are going on a European riverboat cruise this spring.

Let me put my experience at Hopkins in the context of the 50 years since I graduated in 1965. I was certainly not the best student at HGS, though I had a knack for doing well on standardized tests and an aptitude for mathematics. In my senior year, I applied to some of the Ivies and as a backup school, I chose a Junior University. Leland Stanford Junior University accepted me despite my flaws, and soon I was on my way to the West Coast.

Hopkins prepared me well for College – again I was nowhere near the best student in my class, but I did well in my mathematics courses and discovered the new field of computer science. The intellectual freedom and responsibility that Hopkins expected of its students prepared me well for the graduate courses in physics, mathematics, and essentially, all first year graduate courses in computer

Personally, I married Ellen Abelson at Stanford University. We had two lovely children, John and Neva, who are both computer scientists. One is in Silicon Valley (John) and one is in Boston (Neva). John has two daughters and Neva, one daughter so I have three grandchildren. I got divorced in 1996 and married Maria Zemankova the same year. We have a 16-year-old son, Peter, who also has interests in computer science.

The two major faculty influences at HGS were two mathematics teachers. The first was Harold Harrison, who was a Yale graduate student in Mathematics teaching part time (I believe) at HGS. He was teaching the “new math” – e.g. mathematics using set theory – and I loved it. The second was Mr. Heath, who taught me Calculus and prepared me well for Stanford.

and Monsieur DeNoyon. Several years later, Mr. Sherk, who always seemed so serious, surprisingly shared in one of his assembly talks how he had hijacked a locomotive engine when he was an adolescent.

It was around that time that I flipped our farm tractor – a nearly fatal accident. It’s amazing to me that any of us survives adolescence, given our impaired judgement at that age. I’m sure my chances of surviving and subsequently thriving were greatly enhanced by both the family in which I was raised and the schools that I attended.

It’s hard to believe that we’re now on the other side of adulthood relative to our time at Hopkins. Life for me, as I’m sure for many, has been kind of a Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.

Having been involved in the antiwar and civil rights movements in college, followed by getting a master of divinity degree, I’ve been a bit of a crusader throughout my psychiatric career. In my various medical director capacities, I have championed quality of patient care when confronted by shortsighted directives during financial crises.

As a result, I have been demoted twice and fired twice. But the sorts of systemic challenges I’ve faced that are commonly encountered in public psychiatry (e.g., having medico-legal responsibility without commensurate authority, serving in isolated situations without adequate support) inspired me to found the American Association of Community Psychiatrists. This organization,

comprised of like-minded flaming idealists, has significantly impacted psychiatry and the treatment of the seriously mentally ill in our communities. A prominent colleague once reassured me that one hasn’t earned one’s stripes as an administrative psychiatrist until he or she has been fired at least once. By this standard, I’m a four-star general, doing my best to keep up with Admiral Burkhardt! Coincidentally, Tom and I happened to be in the same group being tested to become Certified Physician Executives in La Jolla a number of years ago.

I never look at anything in my life with regret, because I figure it’s all propelled me to where I am now, which is a satisfactory place. Two notions that have sustained me through challenging times are 1)

crisis is opportunity (it’s largely a matter of determining to seize upon the crisis and make good things happen out of it), and 2) persistence is the parent of success (if you stick with it, you can move mountains, particularly if you team up with other like-minded people). None of us gets through life without adversity. What helps, and can even be growthful, is to face such times as constructively and optimistically as possible.

I am very much looking forward to our reunion and, I hope, many more to come! I anticipate retiring in a couple of years, and am interested to learn how this transition is going for others. I am also looking forward to reminiscing about old times and sharing new good ones. Once again, it’s time to rock ’n’ roll!

I married Linda Atkinson in 1979 and have one son, Crockett, who is a film editor (Beasts of the Southern Wild). I graduated from Yale in 1970, and spent time on the Navajo reservation in Arizona and in Latin America before going to Graduate School at Cornell in Agricultural Economics and International Agriculture. After I got my PhD, I worked for the International Potato Center, an international research organization focused on improvement of potatoes and sweet potatoes in developing countries, first at their headquarters in Lima, Peru and then in the regional office for Africa in Nairobi, Kenya. I then worked for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), also in Nairobi. I had lived and worked in Africa for 25 years when I retired in 2013.

My wife Helga is from Germany. She is also an agriculturalist, and has focused particularly on strengthening My wife’s name is Helga Recke. Our children are Chris- career opportunities for African women scientists. Our topher (20), a Junior at New York University, and Hanna children were both born in Africa, and graduated from (19) a Sophomore at Colorado College. I attended HGS high school at the International School of Kenya. Helga for my Junior and Senior years, and really enjoyed it. It seems like just yesterday we were sharing experiences on the Hill ... growing up and learning from, and with, each other.

Like many of us, I can reflect on those of us who have gathered together over the years, but I want to take a moment to thank the heart and soul of what Hopkins has always been – the faculty and staff. To this day, I am amazed at how, in just one year, my life was changed by men like Bud Erich, Bill Brown, Bill MacDermott and others. Yes, they coached us, but more importantly they talked to us about life and I still carry that with me today.

There is no one who influenced me more than our history teacher, Karl Crawford. He combined a passion for academics, education and excellence with a devotion to his students to give us all a blueprint for success in the classroom and in life.

Since leaving Hopkins and graduating from the University of Southern California, I have been blessed to marry my wife JoAnne and to have two wonderful children, Geoff and Jaime, who have given us three great grandchildren. My professional life has been in sports and broadcasting and I continue to enjoy working in that field today. Many of the lessons I learned at Hopkins and in my high school years have stayed with me throughout my professional life.

Like so many of our teachers, Karl Crawford never quit on us.

He kept hammering away, never letting us settle for mediocre, so we could be the best that we could be. For me, he made history come alive. He exposed us to real life stories and examples that encouraged you to explore on your own and learn more and more. Even after graduation from Hopkins, you never graduated from Crawford University. much about life from my coaches and those coaches I have covered — great leaders like John Wooden, Mike Krzyzewski, Tommy Lasorda, Joe Torre, Joe Paterno, Carm Cozza and many more. None of them had anything that Karl Crawford didn’t have. He ranks right up there with all of them as a leader, motivator and friend. For 30 years, I was blessed to be the master of ceremonies for the National Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Cooperstown, New York – the home of the greatest players of all time. You know, we had our own Hall of Famers right here on the Hill in the faculty and staff that helped us mold our lives. For me, at the top of that list is Karl Crawford. Thanks again Karl! God bless you and our other mentors. You will always have a special place in our hearts.

A week after our graduation, I headed out to Marble, CO, in the heart of the high Rockies, to meet up with John Braman. We had been chosen to be “Sherpas” (junior mountaineering instructors) at the Colorado Outward Bound School for the Summer. So,

riage a week after this reunion. Then came Harvard Business School and, thereafter, I joined Morgan Stanley for a career in finance.

The highlight of my tenure at the firm was the period 1986-1992, when my family and I moved to London, where I assumed responsibility for our investment banking activities throughout Europe. Our business was built on privatizations, cross-border mergers and international capital-raising, each of which presented fascinating challenges, both cultural and financial. It was a very rewarding time from both a professional and personal perspective. On returning to the U.S. in 1992, I took over leadership of our Global Equity Capital Markets business, which I ran until I retired years later.

At the time we returned from London to Greenwich, CT, I became very engaged, once again, at Hopkins, first as a Trustee, then as Chairman of the Continued on page 21

Finance Committee, and later as President of the Board. During over 20 years of service, I was deeply involved in two successful capital campaigns (thanks significantly to John Malone), and worked with an extremely talented group of trustees, educators and administrators. Collectively, we were able to help Hopkins become much stronger in terms of finances, facilities and academic program. The School grew throughout this period in terms of enrollment, endowment, financial accessibility, diversity and geographic footprint.

Overall, by many measures of academic and institutional achievement, Hopkins thrived.

Because of Hopkins, and specifically former Trustee David Swensen (Yale’s Chief Investment Officer), I became involved with Makena Capi-

tal Management, an endowment management firm based in Menlo Park, CA, and I serve now as a Director.

My interest in classical music is fulfilled, in part, through my role as Chairman of the Rockport (MA) Chamber Music Festival Advisory Council. My long-time interest in the outdoors, particularly skiing and fishing, is often realized, today, in the company of our two sons and their four boys. Indeed, our sons, their spouses and children are vital aspects of our everyday lives.

I attended Hopkins Grammar School for three years from 1959-1962, Forms I-III, but I did not graduate with my class, as we moved to New Jersey in the summer of 1962. I remember commuting to Hopkins with Ib Jorgensen and Greg Cook and the MacArthur twins, Hugh and John. I didn’t keep up with classmates, although looking at the list, I see a lot of names that look familiar and bring back good memories.

In early 1989, we decided to move our family to Cleveland, where I became General Counsel and a senior executive with Sudbury, a diversified industrial manufacturing company. My wife was a partner at Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, doing complex intellectual property and commercial litigation.

Sudbury turned out to be too leveraged in the economic downtown of 1990-1991. I was put in charge of leading Sudbury through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding in 1991-1992. Not wanting to take a governmentsponsored trip to Viet Nam, I decided to accept a design engineer position with Avco Lycoming, designing a prototype, military turbine engine, which also provided a draft deferment while I decided what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. It didn’t take long to realize that designing turbine engines was definitely not it, so I joined the National Guard and went off for six months of Army basic and advanced training. After returning, I married my wife of 44 years, Deena, and decided to join the family printing business, where I felt I could make a far greater impact than at a large corporation.

to experience a long, substantial decline, and eventually I chose to sell my company. I then decided to pursue a second career as a corporate executive recruiter, first with a local company, and now on my own for the past four years.

Most recently, my greatest pleasure is spending time with my children and five grandchildren and enjoying their personal growth and accomplishments.

I had never heard of Hopkins at the age of 13, when my father brought me to Forest Road to be interviewed and tested. My memories of that visit are regrettably vague, because some kind folds there saw something in a discomfited working class kid. One of them, I believe, was Alan Sherk. Coming from parochial school in Fair Haven, I simply assumed I would go on to high school at Notre Dame. Even the seminary recruiters had had their eye on me, though fortunately I demurred. My father worked as a substation specialist for the United Illuminating Company, but on the side he ran a little business with my mother, Jay-Mor Electric, repairing small appliances, irons, toasters, and the like — a profession now vanished. I got to HGS because dad actu-

Professionally, in both my Army and civilian careers, my country has honored me with the opportunity to serve in units whose mission was to make contact with the enemy first. For a soldier, there is no higher honor.

After graduating from West Point in 1969 and serving as a platoon leader with the 4th Infantry Division in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, I made the decision to branch transfer to Military Intelligence, where I specialized in counterespionage operations and investigations. As the Director of the Army Surveillance Team, I was privileged to lead or take part in investigations that resulted in the arrest and conviction of 12 people for espionage against the United States and NATO. As a counterespionage team leader, I was the lead agent in an operation that resulted in the identification of a recruited enemy intelligence agent who was specifically tasked to penetrate the US Intelligence Community through the Army, and

orchestrated the “turn” of this enemy operative back against his enemy intelligence handlers. I have been told that this was the only operation of this type and sensitivity conducted by the Defense Department (DOD) during the Cold War. agents in operations to penetrate and neutralize the efforts of the enemy intelligence services arrayed against us at the end of the Cold War.

During my career, I have also taught advanced counterintelligence operations at the DOD Joint Counterintelligence Training Academy and at the National HUMINT Collaboration Development Center.

After retiring from military service, I was recruited as a covert action operations officer by the US Government Counterterrorism Center, where I spent 12 years supporting operations against high value terrorist targets in the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa.

As I approach retirement, I hope to play a more active role in “Hopkins Life,” where I would like to mentor those students who indicate that they are interested in a career in government service.

After a long, entrepreneurial career in advertising and PR, my wife Joanne went back to school for graduate training and now works as an addictions counselor in Baltimore.

I recently took a new position in DC as Director of Finance & Operations-North America for Dalberg Global Development Advisors, a strategy and policy consulting firm dedicated to improving living standards and opportunities for disadvantaged populations worldwide.

Among the activities that bring me pleasure each winter and spring are working with the Princeton Alumni Schools Committee, interviewing candidates for admission to Princeton. I am continually amazed at the accomplishments of these young people, and grateful that I didn’t have to compete with them when I was a senior at Hopkins!

I retired in 2005 after working for the Defense Department for my entire career, mostly with the Corps of Engineers.

I now live with my wife, Wendy, at Smith Mountain Lake in the Blue Ridge foothills of Virginia where we enjoy boating, hiking, wine tasting and Virginia Tech football. I am an avid snow skier and wakeboarder and try to stay fit by going to the gym several days a week. We also like to travel, and usually take a cruise each year.

So I dug in, working two jobs – one as a runner at First National Bank, the second as a dishwasher and went to night school. That summer, Mr. Sherk called, we had a sit-down and he invited me back. I was the poster boy that next senior year: I played on the first untied undefeated football team, made Dean’s list, etc.

I managed to stay out of trouble for the entire three years of Junior School. I guess the interview had scared the dickens out of me, or perhaps it was due to being the youngest member of the class, d.o.b. 3/24/48.

Either way, my streak came to an end in the 10th grade, when I learned what the word “deportment” meant. Apparently mine was not so good. This was not my fault, though. Cmdr. If you believe Headmaster Sherk, there was a serious “error in judgment” on my part during the spring of 11th grade. I had English class with Mr. Kittredge in Hopkins House. One day he did not show up, so a few classmates and I decided to go to study hall in the basement of Baldwin Hall.

We got as far as the inviting park bench between the two buildings before sitting down to enjoy the nice weather. Shortly, along came Mr. Sherk, channeling Sgt. Joe Friday of television’s “Dragnet” fame. We were told to go to his office to cool our heels and think about what we had done. This was difficult for me, because I was not clear what the serious offense actually was. Apparently, being outside while in 11th grade bordered on the criminal. The punishment was the loss of our 12th grade privileges for part of the next year and, of course, another entry in my permanent file. As on the television show, I omit the names of my coconspirators to protect the innocent.

I wonder if this is true for anyone else: the teacher who made the greatest lifelong impression on me is definitely Miss Barton, English Composition, First

Form (I believe). She conveyed that English has form and that, in the hands of masters, there could be elegance in that form; what a discovery. Next, maybe, an Englishman (I have no memory of his name), a history teacher visiting Hopkins and America for a year; of all things, he taught Connecticut Colonial history (probably 1st Form, too), and his wife taught Latin.

Both were great teachers, but he made the bigger impression – we started with the geological bedrock of the state, then the French and Indian Wars and the colonists throwing out the English. One cold day with the windows wide open, a poor student complained about the wintery conditions in the classroom and he had us stand by our desks to do jumping jacks.

Why did I attend Hopkins? Good question; my parents told me to apply; my older brother went there. He wasn’t a terrifically good student; I wanted to do better than him. The first years of Hopkins were the most magical to me. I had lived in Athens, Greece, a few years before, an intense time – the bitter civil wars were hardly in the rear-view mirror, the Greeks were trying to throw the Brits out of Cyprus; the country was still largely rural; we visited remote ancient sites; memorable hikes in the mountains, I could clamber all over the Acropolis whenever I wanted, but Hopkins was just as interesting.

In those first years there, I loved the new worlds that were opening up before me. It was the first time I had individual teachers for each subject:

English, Latin, History, Science and Math – many of them year-long studies. Also, my parents had just split up the summer before I entered school.

Graduate Program in my department (a job I love). Next year, I’ll be Chair for the second time; we’ll see how it goes. Hunter Avenue Bloomington, IN 47401 (812) 332-9600 wintsch@indiana.edu I still remember my shoulders collapsing from around my ears when I heard from Mr. Heath, as I stood in the library, that I had been admitted to Beloit College. I hadn’t been aware of how stressed over college admissions I had been. Beloit was my first choice. I wanted out of New England, but didn't want to go south. With all their troubles at the time, I didn't think I wanted that much education. The west was too far away, and that left the Midwest. I enjoyed the small size of Hopkins, and Beloit offered that, as well as a terrific geology program.

I left for college in early June, so I could go via Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. This was my first geology internship: a field assistant to a graduate student at Yale chasing a little Cretaceous clam called ‘Lingula,” especially well preserved in concretions in the arid country of SW Saskatchewan. So before I arrived at college, I had already OD-ed on Paleontology; dead clams were not a turn-on. Living up to this level of passion, I later got a C in my required Paleontology class.

Beloit had a trimester system, with three equal terms beginning in September, January, and May. I think that they wanted to reap the financial benefits of filling their domes continuously. To do so, they made all freshmen stay on campus for three terms in a row, and encouraged everyone to take their first summer vacation in the fall to make room for the next freshman class. I took my next summer internship in in the fall in central Florida, digging phosphates out of the sand.

By the time it was over in December, my parents had retired to Elmira, Ontario, where I had been born. I was a dual citizen, but did not understand that well at all. So when, in December, 1966 on my way home for Christmas, and as Johnson was heating up the Viet Nam war, I was not prepared for the questions I got from the border guard at Niagara Falls. Where were you born? Elmira, Ontario. Where do you live? Elmira, Ontario. What’s your citizenship? USA. Did you immigrate to Canada? I don't think so.

Let me see your drivers’ license: I handed him my Connecticut license. Then he noticed the Florida plates on the ’57 Chevy I had purchased in Bartow. Do you have a draft card? I handed him my card pointing out the 2S –student deferment. What were you doing in Florida? I had a job as a phosphate miner, I said proudly.

How long were you there? I started in September. But your 2S status requires you to be a full-time student. Oh, I am, I just took my summer vacation in the fall. He was not entertained. How can that be? Oh, this is the marvelous Beloit Plan! They can fill the dorms this way. He was not amused. How is it that you have a Connecticut driver’s

license if you live in Canada? Well, you see, I used to live in Connecticut.

When did you move there? 1948. And now you are going to Canada? Yes, I’m going home for Christmas. Do you have anything that documents your Canadian residency? I scoured my wallet, but all I could find was my New Haven Library card. He concluded that had dropped out of school, and was fleeing the draft. So are you taking your next summer vacation this winter? This time I was not amused. I showed him the Beloit catalogue with its calendar described, and he finally and reluctantly let me in.

Those were the days.

I graduated in 1969, started graduate work at Brown and DID get drafted, so I joined the Coast Guard. Went back to Brown, Ph.D.ed in 1975, and landed a teaching job at Indiana University, where I am still actively teaching.

There are more details in between, but they will have to wait for another allotment of words at our 75th reunion.
