Pond at the entrance to HopeWay

The way we do anything at HopeWay is the way we do everything: from the welcoming embrace of the lobby, to the serene beauty throughout the campus. Our medical and clinical teams are extraordinary, leading programs that save and heal. Our integrative therapies enrich and empower: art, nutrition, horticulture, music and more. Our way means treating the whole person, caring for caregivers, educating and advocating, creating a stigma-free culture. Along with treating mental illness, we’re a model of mental wellness. This is the HopeWay Way.

2018 IMPACT REPORT

There are many ways to tell the HopeWay story. Here are just a few.

HopeWay gave me a platform on which to base my life. i ended up here completely broken in soul and spirit after several years of mental health struggles following the death of my teenage son. my journey included an experience in a hospital psychiatric ward that was very traumatic and not transformative in any way. When it opened a few years later, my doctor referred me to HopeWay. the moment i got here i saw a light at the end of my tunnel. it was Hope.

i toured HopeWay as a community mental health professional and fell in love with the environment and the approach to treating mental illness. the setting itself is healing, utilizing a holistic approach to treating mental health.

As a psychiatrist, it is a unique experience to walk down the hall and meet as a team with a client, therapists, nurses and other specialists. this collaboration is key, as it provides a full picture of the individual and envelopes them in care and resources. our initial contact is a very thorough consultation which typically lasts for a few hours. this is the HopeWay Way.

As a hospital psychiatric social worker, my responsibilities include assessments, family meetings, discharge planning and referrals. Before HopeWay, i tended to refer patients to South Carolina, tennessee, georgia, Florida and beyond. the admissions department does a terrific job working with providers, so helpful and quick to respond. At times i almost feel a little spoiled!

Here in this comforting physical setting, everyone is in one place, interfacing with each other. there is one evaluation and a team of people working a totally individualized plan. i completed the 30-day intensive outpatient day program, returning home at night. i gained so many new tools through the integrative therapies, particularly mindfulness meditation which has helped me the most.

i am thrilled that HopeWay offers iop in both the day and the evening. the integrative therapies are particularly great: music, art, nutrition, horticulture, etc. these are different outlets and ways to process that i haven’t encountered anywhere else. this is an extremely supportive environment where we all work together to achieve goals. there’s not one particular way to treat mental illness, it’s what’s best for the individual.

As co-founder of Carolina Youth Coalition, i try to know as much as possible about community resources. i toured HopeWay and was so inspired that i immediately became a donor. i view it as an investment in the mental health of our community. HopeWay’s model is accessible and dignified, with progressive, integrated therapies, best-in-class therapists and programs. the setting is lovely and welcoming. i am deeply grateful to those who had the foresight to create this tremendous asset in Charlotte.

i entered the residential program at HopeWay and stayed five weeks before stepping down to a partial program for three more weeks. To me, the “HopeWay Way” means restoring hope and finding a sense of self worth. this happens throughout the HopeWay journey. it starts with the incredible admissions staff and continues with nurses, technicians, psychiatrists, therapists and the cafe staff. Yes, the cafe staff! From day one, everyone knows your name and has a great interest in getting to know you and guiding you through this tough journey. every single person here has your best interest in mind and helps in every way possible.

it seems like society is trying to play major catch-up with mental health care. Charlotte is on the leading edge of medical services yet we were neglecting the mind. HopeWay has changed that. today i come back as a volunteer to share my story with families and caregivers. i’m the person who has experienced what your loved one might be going through.

the HopeWay Way is client-centered, taking into consideration the whole person and specific needs. The client matters most and they are at the center of their care team.

my HopeWay connection grew much deeper when our college-age son entered a program to address his mental health struggles which were exacerbated by the suicide of a close friend. He is proud to talk about his experience and committed to helping his peers. the focus at HopeWay is about accepting what you’re dealing with and developing a care plan for the longterm. So many young adults are struggling, and the whole family is affected. i get a call every few weeks from a parent inquiring about our experience, hoping to find resources to help someone they love. HopeWay gives clients tools to recognize their internal conversations and learn how to help themselves. It is an empowerment model.

Clients and families are often very anxious upon arrival, so i’ll take them on a tour of HopeWay which helps them relax. it is such a dignified and uplifting atmosphere for mental health care, designed in a way that gives comfort. i felt like i had walked into Architectural Digest when i first visited and quickly sensed how important the light, layout and overall space is to the mission. it has a critical role. i see great excitement within the medical community that HopeWay exists. It has created a vibrancy among the whole mental health community. through guest speakers, education and social media, HopeWay has created greater awareness and vibrant conversation around the importance of taking care of our mental health.

i first heard great things about HopeWay by word of mouth, then took a tour and was so impressed by the library, the fitness facility, the landscape and all of the programming. HopeWay offers a comprehensive, eclectic approach to therapeutic processes. they are very involved with clients and their families. As a society, we have not made mental health a priority. there are so many people who are in mental health crisis and need help. it affects bankers, teachers, engineers and counselors people trying to hold down jobs and raise families. With awareness, education and places like HopeWay, I am hopeful. i recently received a thank you note from a former patient who said HopeWay changed her life and that she could not believe how good she felt.

my HopeWay therapist had me write letters to certain people. one was to my father who took his life in 2015. through writing the letter to him, which took me 3 weeks, i was able to tell him certain things i had done as well as things he has missed out on since his passing. i was able to release a lot of guilt and shame that i was holding on to. i was able to express true feelings. i realized that my life is worth living. i regained hope and self-worth through writing these letters and discussing them with the therapists and other members of my group.

ExPEriENCE

Beyond providing extraordinary mental health care, we model mental wellness in every way at HopeWay, even embedding it into the overall design. There is a sense of calm and a prevailing attitude of hope. From the peaceful pond at the entrance to the overall aesthetic, every detail has been thoughtfully considered. The staff is now more than a hundred strong. Here an entire professional team works with each client to create a custom treatment plan based on best practices that is delivered with respect and compassion. In a space like HopeWay, clients are given the time it takes to fully invest in learning about their diagnosis and practice the skills that will allow them to return to a healthy life. All that we do, and the way we do it, uplifts our clients and their families. While HopeWay has only been open since 2016, we see positive outcomes and significant success every day.

ACCESS

Improving access to mental health care is key to the HopeWay mission. Milestones in 2018 include securing in-network contracts with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of NC, Carolina Behavioral Health Alliance, Cigna Behavioral Health & Cigna Healthcare of NC and providing a third of our clients with financial assistance. This includes $500,000 given, bringing the total to date to over $1 million. Financial assistance not only helps people access treatment but also provides bridge funding when insurance denies care that is necessary for recovery. We are grateful to the therapists, psychiatrists, primary care doctors and others who comprise our growing referral base. Treatment options are expanding and we are exploring growth opportunities based on the needs of our community.

Sometimes, when a family comes to HopeWay, they are discouraged due to past experiences and the lack of mental health services available. i appreciate being able to restore faith by working with the family to explore ways HopeWay can help financially to make treatment possible.

EDUCATION

Our community is becoming healthier because we're talking about and learning about mental illness together.

Dr. Kuroski-Mazzei and Dr. Marra have been interviewed on multiple news outlets and we’ve extended our reach further through events like Hoops for HopeWay, the HopeWay Ball and the Covington Educational Program. Our goal? We want HopeWay to be a household name and mental wellness to be nurtured in every household.

,,

community

We are proud that a leg of our mission is helping stimulate community conversation around mental illness. Less stigma and more hope around mental illness in the Charlotte region and beyond allows for a healthier society. We’ve presented at hospitals, churches and schools throughout this year, as well as numerous conferences, health fairs and community events.

other diseases, mental health is not seen or talked about and we wanted to create a safe place for men to start this dialogue after the passing of a beloved community member.

2018 IMPACT REPORT

Letter from the CEO/Chief Medical Officer and the Chairman of the Board The HopeWay Way. This phrase and our values of hope, excellence, trust and compassion speak to the standard we set in service to our clients and community. The HopeWay Way is about delivering excellence in all things and seizing every opportunity to learn and improve as we grow, always with the mindset that our clients’ safety and mental wellbeing come first. The HopeWay Way means to be extraordinary, and we are able to strive for this standard in everything we do because of those who stand behind us and support this work. Because of you. The Board of Directors and the Senior Leadership Team share immense gratitude for so many people who believe in HopeWay. For the providers who see us among the best options for mental health treatment. For the families who find the door of hope through our admissions office. For the staff who give at the highest level of expertise and compassion every day. For the clients who trust us to shepherd them through a difficult time in their lives. And for the HopeWay community of support that extends across this country - thank you for pushing us to be extraordinary. 2018 was another banner year in paving The HopeWay Way. In only our second full calendar year of operations, we continued to celebrate important milestones while supporting clients as they surpassed theirs.

May 1st was one of the most significant days, as we became in-network with Blue Cross & Blue Shield, the insurance company that covers the largest portion of the market in the Carolinas. Opening this tremendous door for people to access care more affordably through the use of insurance speaks directly to the mission and vision on which HopeWay was founded. We had community members who had been waiting by their phones for this day to arrive, and the announcement welcomed a flood of people in need through our doors. We also partnered with Magellan, CBHA and Cigna over the year, expanding our healthcare net even further. (We went in-network with United Behavioral Health on June 1, 2019!) In 2018, we saw clients come from all over the Carolinas, across the U.S., and we expanded our reach internationally! Today, we are happy to say that 97% of our clients accessed HopeWay’s premier mental health treatment through their insurance plans. This is The HopeWay Way. At the same time, thirty-two percent of our clients received financial assistance and in 2018 we surpassed $1 million in aid, a milestone made possible by our generous donors. Financial assistance is important for those who pay out of pocket or for those whose insurance is denied before they are ready to move to a different level of care. Every client’s journey is unique and access to our financial assistance program

Alyson R. Kuroski-Mazzei, DO, MRO, FAPA CEO and Chief Medical Officer

allows each person to travel that journey in the safest way possible. This is The HopeWay Way. As the client census grew to meet our set goals for financial solvency, we doubled our team to meet the ratios required for excellent care. We are so proud of our people and happy that we can recruit and retain employees at the highest level in this industry. Every client deserves the best in the team that cares for them each day. This is the HopeWay Way. Some people in our community needed other options, so we opened an Evening Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for those who work, go to school or have other obligations during the day. The HopeWay Way means being limber enough to make crucial decisions to improve care, and the Evening IOP addition helped fill another hole in our mental health care system. The HopeWay Way continues to evolve and we are excited about new opportunities that lie before us and pleased to share this journey with our extraordinary donors. Please enjoy this snapshot of the many ways your support allowed us to provide extraordinary mental health treatment and spread mental wellness throughout our community. Thank you for being extraordinary and promoting The HopeWay Way.
