Spr ing 2011 Domestic Violence Counts 2010 A 24-Hour Census of Domestic Violence Shelters and Services

On September 15, 2010, 70,648 adults and children in the United States found safety and support from local domestic violence programs and shelters. For the fifth consecutive year, the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) conducted its annual National Census of Domestic Violence Services, a one-day snapshot of services requested and provided on that day, as well as a count of requests for services that were unmet. In this 24-hour period, programs provided advocacy, support and shelter for 43,650 adults and 26,998 children across the United States. In addition to providing in-person assistance, victim advocates answered 22,292 hotline calls. Unfortunately, despite helping more than 70,000 people, domestic violence programs were unable to meet 9,541 requests for services, largely due to a lack of resources. The economic recession has forced many domestic violence programs to scale back to providing only basic, rather than comprehensive, services.

In the state of Missouri, 2,114 people were served during this 24-hour period. 630 hotline calls were answered, which is more than 26 calls every hour. However, 286 people requested services and were unable to access them. Your support and generosity are what enable Hope House to continue to offer comprehensive services to more than 10,000 victims of domestic violence every year. (The above information was reproduced from the NNEDV Census 2010 Report, www.nnedv.org/census)

Capital Campaign Update

One of the most exciting pieces of completing our Capital Campaign is the construction of a Community Partnership Center on our Independence campus. This building will house stations for stylists, a medical and dental room, and offices for attorneys. Offering these basic services on-site allows our clients to take care of their every day needs without having to leave the security of our campus. A perfect example of how the new Community Partnership Center will be used is illustrated by Josh Brassfield of Beauty Brands. Josh, who works at Beauty Brands’ Independence location, rallied a group of his fellow stylists to visit our Independence location in October and perform makeovers for over 30 of our shelter clients. The makeovers included haircuts and styles, styling tips, makeup application, and manicures. Josh tells us there were tears of happiness and the ladies absolutely loved their new looks. In fact, two of the ladies had job interviews the next day, and both were offered the job! When asked if he would do this again, Josh said, “It felt great to me because I was giving back. I believe the more good you give, the more good you get back.” Josh has already agreed to make a once monthly trip to make over any of our new clients. Thank you, Josh, for making our clients feel wonderful and look beautiful! The makeovers had to take place in a makeshift salon in the daycare center. But when the construction on our new Community Partnership Center is complete, there will be a dedicated space for our volunteer stylists.

Justin Madsen, a 15 year old sophomore at Truman High School, decided he wanted to help Hope House for his Troop 347 Eagle Scout project. He visited our Independence campus and saw the remnants of a playground. It would take a lot of time, energy, and money to rebuild the playground, but Justin was ready to take on the task.

Justin planned the renovation of the 30 foot x 40 foot playground, including the pouring of concrete, mulching, and building the tower that houses the slide. For supplies, he reached out to the community for donations, then raised another $3,000. He even rallied his whole Scout troup together on numerous occassions to help execute this labor-intensive job. Sometimes Justin was leading 20 people, but many times it was just Justin and one of his granfathers out there working. It took 200 hours to complete the project. When asked what effect he thought the playground will have at Hope House, Justin stated, “I hope that it makes those who’ve been put into a situation which they shouldn’t be put in to find some hope and some happiness.” Excerpted from story by Adrianne DeWeese in The Examiner.
