WEAVING VOICES THROUGH THE THREADS OF MEMORY

Chris Baker’s Transformative Journey from Empathy to Advocacy

In a world captivated by storytelling, some narratives rise above the ordinary, touching hearts and leaving unforgettable footprints in the traces of human experience. History that transgresses through time, stories that stay untouched through generations. Precisely in essence by Legacy Videos by Visuals by Momo, a tribute to resilience owes to the impassioned commitment of Chris Baker, co-owner of the company. Empathy to advocacy, a cause that began as a parable for transformation into the beginning of a platform that seeks to preserve and capsule stories Alzheimer’s and Dementia aim to take away.

A story that begins with partners of different backgrounds, Chris and Momo. While Chris carried no prior experience with Alzheimer’s or Dementia, Momo bore a unique perspective from personal experience. Momo’s gentle nature stood in contrast to Chris’s more outgoing demeanor. This characteristic motivated Chris to rise to the occasion, assuming a role that would amplify Momo’s voice and manifest his pain of witnessing a loved one’s journey through dementia, which sooner rather than later fueled their collective mission.

An unexpected turn in Chris’s path came when he joined the 2023 Longest Day committee as the Recruitment Committee Chair. This seemingly unrelated role soon connected with the genesis of Legacy Videos, which motioned Chris to the forefront of advocacy for those silenced by Alzheimer’s and Dementia. He pursued relentless learning, understanding the diseases and their impact on lives. His genuine interest in their stories became the link between his world and the world overshadowed by memory loss.

His involvement in the Longest Day committee was transformative, and therefore, Legacy Videos was framed — as a tool to safeguard the fleeting memories of those contending with these conditions. A space where life-defining moments could be remembered, loved, and shared.

With Momo’s unwavering support and a committed team behind him, Chris turned his compassion into tangible action. Legacy Videos by Visuals by Momo became not just a venture but a symbol of hope, a vessel for memories, and a shining example of the strength of advocacy.

By embracing the unknown, Chris and Momo’s journey became vessels of empathy, transformation, and action towards an advocacy that captures moments, so nothing is left unsaid or unheard. Legacy Videos by Visuals by Momo is a reminder that within each individual’s journey lies the power to create ripples of impact, weaving together the threads of memory into a tapestry that defies the passage of time.

FINDING THE RIGHT HOME CARE SERVICES

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A PROVIDER

Caring for a loved one in need of home care services is a significant responsibility. As family members, it’s essential to ensure that your loved ones receive the best possible care and support. With numerous providers offering home care and medical staffing services, how do you choose the right one that aligns with your family’s needs and values? Here are some key factors to consider when selecting a home care agency:

1. Compassionate and Caring Approach: Compassion forms the heart of any exceptional home care service. Look for a provider that prioritizes empathy and genuine care for your loved ones. The right agency will go beyond routine tasks, forming meaningful connections with your family members to enhance their well-being.

2. Registered Nurse Oversight: Having Registered Nurses involved in the caregiving process is crucial for delivering top-notch medical attention. Agencies with RN oversight, like BrightStar Care Delray Beach, ensure that your loved ones’ health is in safe hands. RNs conduct full initial nursing assessments and create personalized care plans for caregivers to follow, ensuring comprehensive and specialized care.

3. Transparent Communication: Effective communication is vital in caregiving partnerships. Seek an agency that values transparent and open channels of communication. This ensures that you, as family members, can stay informed, voice preferences, and collaborate with the care team to ensure the best outcomes for your loved ones.

4. Licensing, Bonding, and Insurance: Trust and safety are paramount when choosing a home care provider. Look for a licensed home care agency like BrightStar Care Delray Beach, where all W-2 employees are licensed, bonded, and insured, including Workers Compensation. This guarantees that your family’s well-being and financial security are protected.

5. Availability and Flexibility: Caring for your loved

ones might require round-the-clock support. Ensure that the agency you choose offers 24/7 availability to meet the diverse and evolving needs of your family members. Flexibility in service options is also essential, as care requirements may change over time.

6. Comprehensive Services: Your loved ones’ needs may range from assistance with daily activities to specialized medical care. Look for an agency like BrightStar Care Delray Beach, which offers both home health aide services and skilled nursing care, like Medication Management. This comprehensive approach ensures that your family members receive all the support they require.

7. Accreditation and Reputation: Accreditation from trusted organizations, like Joint Commission Accreditation, signifies the agency’s commitment to delivering A Higher Standard of Care. Additionally, read reviews and seek recommendations from others who have experience with the provider to gauge their reputation.

Choosing the right home care agency is a vital decision that can significantly impact your loved ones’ well-being. BrightStar Care Delray Beach offers exclusive and compassionate home care and medical staffing services, setting the standard for excellence in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Boynton Beach.

As family members, you play a pivotal role in selecting the best care for your loved ones. By considering factors like compassion, RN oversight, transparent communication, licensing, and comprehensive services, you can make an informed decision that ensures your family members receive the care and support they truly deserve. Let BrightStar Care Delray Beach be your trusted partner in this journey, providing unparalleled care and making a positive difference in your loved ones’ lives.

WHY A REVERSE MORTGAGE NOW

A reverse mortgage is a type of loan that allows homeowners who are typically aged 62 or older to convert a portion of their home equity into cash. Unlike a traditional mortgage, where the homeowner makes monthly payments to the lender, a reverse mortgage enables the homeowner to receive payments from the lender instead.

Here’s how a reverse mortgage generally works:

1. Eligibility: To qualify for a reverse mortgage, you must be a homeowner aged 62 or older with significant home equity. The home should be your primary residence.

2. Loan Types: There are three main types of reverse mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM), which is insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA); proprietary reverse mortgages, which are private loans; and singlepurpose reverse mortgages, which are typically offered by state or local government agencies.

3. Loan Amount: The amount you can borrow through a reverse mortgage depends on factors such as your age, the value of your home, current interest rates, and the specific terms of the loan. Generally, the older you are and the higher the value of your home, the more you can borrow.

4. Payments: With a reverse mortgage, you have options for receiving payments. You can receive a lump sum, a line of credit, fixed monthly payments for a specific period or as long as you live in the home, or a combination of these methods. The payments are typically tax-free, as they are considered loan advances rather than income.

5. Repayment: Unlike a traditional mortgage, a reverse mortgage does not require monthly repayments. The loan becomes due when the homeowner moves out of the home, sells the property, or passes away. At that point, the loan must be repaid, usually from the proceeds of selling the home. If the home’s value exceeds the loan balance, the homeowner or their heirs may keep the remaining equity. However, if the

loan balance exceeds the home’s value, the homeowner or heirs are generally not responsible for the difference.

Benefits of a reverse mortgage:

1. Access to Funds: A reverse mortgage provides homeowners with a way to tap into their home equity and receive cash payments, which can be beneficial for covering living expenses, medical costs, home improvements, or other financial needs.

2. No Monthly Payments: Unlike traditional mortgages, reverse mortgages do not require monthly repayments. This feature can be particularly helpful for retirees on fixed incomes who may have difficulty meeting regular mortgage payments.

3. Retain Home Ownership: With a reverse mortgage, you can continue to own and live in your home as long as you meet the loan requirements, such as paying property taxes and insurance and maintaining the property.

4. Loan Protections: The FHA-insured HECM reverse mortgages come with certain borrower protections, such as non-recourse loans, which means that neither you nor your heirs will be personally liable if the loan balance exceeds the home’s value.

5. Flexibility in Payment Options: Reverse mortgages offer various payment options, allowing you to choose the method that best suits your financial needs, whether it’s receiving a lump sum, regular payments, or having a line of credit for future use.

It’s important to note that while reverse mortgages can be beneficial for some homeowners, they are not suitable for everyone. It’s recommended to carefully consider the terms, costs, and potential impact on your financial situation before deciding to proceed with a reverse mortgage. Consulting with a qualified financial advisor is also advised to ensure it aligns with your overall retirement plan.

Prayer is a very powerful force. It reminds us that Hashem (G-d) is in charge of every aspect of our existence, both when things go well for us and when we have troubles.

We use prayer to express to Hashem (G-d) our gratitude, as well as to supplicate.

Prayer draws us closer to our Creator when we speak to Him.

Prayer is your vehicle in times of joy, sadness and gratitude.

I got up early one morning rushed right into the day. I had so much to accomplish, that I didn’t have time to pray.

Problems just tumbled about me and heavier came each task. Why doesn’t G-d help me? I wondered. He answered, “You didn’t ask”.

I wanted to see joy and beauty; but the day tolled on gray and bleak.

I wondered why G-d didn’t show me: He said, “But you didn’t seek”.

I tried to come into G-d’s presence; I used all my keys at the lock;

G-d gently chided, “My child you didn’t knock”.

I woke up early this morning and paused before entering the day; I had so much to accomplish, that I had to take time to pray.

Torah commands us to: “serve Him with your whole heart” (Devarim 11:13).

Our Sages explain: “What is the service of the heart? Prayer” (Ta’anis 2a).

DO YOU NEED AN ELDER LAW ATTORNEY?

LONG-TERM CARE PLANNING AS PART OF YOUR ESTATE PLAN

Elder Law is a sub-specialty of estate planning. We help families preserve their assets and qualify for government assistance to help pay for long-term care at home, in assisted living, and in skilled nursing.

A Case Study

Let me introduce you to Sarah and Nathan—avatars of my typical clients.  Married for over 50 years, they have three children: Harold, Eileen, and Samuel.  Sarah and Nathan moved to Florida in 1989 after selling their home in Brooklyn.  Nathan comes to my office with his daughter, Eileen.  He can no longer take care of Sarah by himself and is afraid of putting her in danger but is worried about running out of money.  Sarah cannot walk and needs help with her activities of daily living.  She has fallen and they called the paramedics to help her up.  Though she hasn’t gotten hurt, the paramedics called Eileen, and told her that her parents need help.

As soon as we sit down, Nathan tells me he has a Will, and he doesn’t see how I can help, unless I give him a winning lottery ticket. I explain that general estate planning involves planning for assets after death.  Long-term care planning involves planning for what happens while you are living and unable to physically and/or mentally care for yourself independently.  The specialized estate and incapacity plans that we prepare allow our clients to maximize their savings while living to afford the best possible care.

Nathan then tells me that he has $400,000 in savings and retirement plus their home, which he is afraid will be depleted, because Sarah needs a lot of help.  I explain that to qualify for Medicaid, an applicant must have no more than $2,000 in assets, and no more than $2,523 per month in income, an amount that increases annually.  Elder Law Attorneys help people shelter their assets using our “Elder Law Toolbox” so that they can legally qualify for government benefits from Medicaid, while also benefiting from their own savings, without needing to sell their home.

Eileen said, “My parents have different needs. Can they get help at home?”  Medicaid will pay for (1) a small amount of home care (typically 4-5 hours per day), or (2) up to $1,500 toward assisted living, or (3) the difference between an individual’s income and full cost of a skilled nursing facility, the average cost of which is between $13,000 and $15,000 in South Florida.

Nathan tells me that he heard there a 5-year look back.  Medicaid penalizes applicants for making improper transfers of assets. While it is advantageous to pre-plan, we can also help people obtain Medicaid benefits in a crisis, while preserving their savings so they can afford more and better care.

What happened to Nathan and Sarah? By the end of the meeting, the tension has disappeared from Nathan’s face. Nathan and Sarah hire us to redo their estate plan to allow for long-term care planning—I meet with Nathan and Sarah privately, and both are very sharp. Nathan is a dedicated caregiver to Sarah, but eventually relents to the family hiring Daisy, a caregiver in their home for a few hours daily. Two years later, Nathan passed away after a brief illness. Sarah calls the office, explains she is lonely and is ready to move into a nursing home, and apply for Medicaid. She will still have Daisy come a few hours per day, which she can afford, thanks to our asset protection planning.

C.A.R.E. IS WHO WE ARE

Heart2Heart Outreach of South Florida is a non-profit organization that carries out its mission to provide C.A.R.E. to aging adults who experience loneliness and isolation. The acronym ‘C.A.R.E’ stands for connect, advocate, respond, and engage, and the approach is person-centered in reaching isolated seniors.

C.A.R.E. is mobilized through Heart2Heart’s annual volunteer base of over 700 individuals, of which 155 volunteers are considered active on a weekly basis.

Heart2Heart’s vision is to provide hope, share love, and restore purpose. Their volunteers act on the vision through C.A.R.E. in a variety of ways like performing home-based projects. Examples include creating thoughtful cards, cozy blankets, and crocheted dolls which are then placed into care packages and delivered to isolated residents. They can deliver food to those who have need and minister to seniors through weekly bible studies and Sunday services through local churches.

Volunteers also connect in person with seniors living in care centers or those living independently in their own homes. They can also connect digitally, through weekly video calls and phone calls using iPads provided to centers by Heart2Heart.

C.A.R.E TECH - iPads for Seniors

A total of 250 iPads have been programmed especially for seniors living in care centers across Broward County, as part of Heart2Heart’s expanded C.A.R.E. Tech program.

So far, 29 care centers have claimed a total of 185 iPads for their residents.

The iPad program is the second time Heart2Heart has helped seniors connect to their loved ones with

technology. In 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, Heart2Heart used a grant to donate Amazon Fire tablets to seniors at care centers and isolated at home.  Since then, a total of 39 Heart2Heart volunteers have signed up to be digital volunteers, committed to video calling at least two seniors per week from their own devices. Digital volunteers will be paired with residents whom the centers have identified as lonely or without regular visitors. Already, digital volunteers have begun making connections to their assigned residents with weekly phone calls.

One volunteer, Yvonne was connected with a resident named Julie, from a nearby center. This connection was made in hopes to distract Julie from feeling worried about her significant other, who had recently been admitted to the hospital. Yvonne would call Julie and try and help take her mind off the situation. They would speak several times a week and sure enough, became good friends. Sadly, Julie’s significant other passed away, but the connection she made with the volunteer has helped her through her grief of losing a loved one.

The iPads allow care center residents to do more than make video calls to friends, family or Heart2Heart volunteers. Heart2Heart has partnered with Nova Southeastern University to bring library access, book, magazines, and more at their fingertips. Seniors can learn and watch religious media from the Lumo Project, housed in the Bible App downloaded on each iPad.

This year, Heart2Heart has recently partnered with The Apple Store at the Galleria Mall, where community seniors can come gather and learn and they’ve also recently started teaching iPad classes for local community members at Chen Medical, using a senior space to provide much-needed assistance.

providers. The C.A.R.E. Teach is where we received grant money to purchase 250 iPads to take into different nursing homes. These iPads are loaded with a data management system that allows us to. Connect with seniors simplistically and load the iPads with constructive mind games that challenge their motor skills and cognitive thinking.

In 2019, I came to Heart2Heart with a vision. To serve seniors in the local community. Before Heart2Heart, I spent many years working with long term care Medicaid organizations, leading several state contracts and leading the state contract for the Department of Health in North Carolina for a private company that offered self-directed services.

I received the phone call in 2019 from a friend and the board chair at the time, looking for someone who understood the senior space. Someone who could navigate the complexities and lack of services, and a person who understood the church culture. I’ve been a bi-vocational pastor for about 15 years.

What led to the formation of Heart 2 Heart Outreach of South Florida?

Heart2Heart was founded in 2010 by a gentleman named Sean Stepelton of the Stacy Foundation. Sean had a heart for seniors and understood that over 60% of people who live in nursing homes will never receive a visitor ever again from a friend or a loved one. For over 9 years, Heart2Heart had a flagship program that was based off a social and emotional model of care. Care is our acronym for the way we serve people. It stands for Connect, Advocate, Respond, and Engage.

Shortly after I arrived at Heart2Heart, we were hit with the pandemic and we knew we needed to pivot into different areas of service, not only looking to serve seniors who were isolated, but looking to bring services to seniors who were locked in their own home. We started to deliver meals. We started to come up with technology solutions so that seniors would not be isolated, as well as several other programs. That are listed throughout our website.

Since you have been with Heart 2 Heart, what is one of your proudest accomplishments?

Since I’ve been at Heart2Heart two of my proudest accomplishments have been: the initiation of our iPad program and the winning the bid for home delivery meals for ADRC Broward under two restaurant

The Second great accomplishment is the Home Delivery Meals program through the Older Americans Act. This means that every week we could be potentially reaching 700 seniors. By giving them access to nutritious meals through the ADRC Broward contract in partnership with Offerdahl’s Off the Grill, and Sushi Maki.

Are there any new initiatives on the horizon that you would like to share?

I think our biggest initiative on the horizon right now is initiating the home delivery meals contract. Through a ADRC Broward and Department of Elder Affairs. This program will initiate July 1st and a lot of our focus will be on making sure that not only could we serve the seniors in that program well, but that we can connect those same seniors into our other programs.

Our vision at Heart2Heart is to provide hope, share love, and restore purpose to the aging population by training our volunteers to connect, advocate, respond and engage. We believe that the best way to serve our senior population is by asking them first how we can best serve them.

“ARE YOU ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS?”

The internet is filled with endless information about a person with diminished capacity, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinsonian dementia, the telltale signs, the dos, and don’ts and so on. Books, booklets, pamphlets are dedicated to this disease. However, very little is written from the perspective of the actual person struggling with the disease itself. What does that look like? How do we help that person have “the conversation?”

My client is 77 years old. She is a clinical psychologist and was on staff at one of the most prestigious teaching institutions in the world. She has been in private practice for close to 50-years and helped countless numbers of patients with all kinds of challenges including the issue of coping with dementia. Now she finds herself the patient learning to cope with having dementia of the Alzheimer’s type. She struggles with anxiety daily as she attempts to recall words and phrases, maintain a day-to-day routine that is familiar, keep up with friends and colleagues, maintain her social calendar and most important, stay in control of her finances as she has always done. She requests her statements from her Financial Adviser. After all, she has always worked very closely with him, and this has been a normal part of her routine. The statements are delivered to her apartment for her review. I happened to be there when the package arrived. She looks through the documents and quickly becomes anxious. She knows she does not understand any of it. She becomes frantic. I looked at her and very quietly asked her the following question, “What are you the most afraid of?” She looked at me with relief in her eyes and simply stated, “I am afraid I will no longer be able to manage my money and other people will take advantage of me.” She paused and then said, “I don’t want people to think I am crazy.”

Luckily provisions have been made so that she cannot be exploited by anyone. However, she does not always recall that fact nor can she always process what that means because her executive function is compromised. It is essential to understand how people feel about the changes happening in their lives and equally as important, to the best we can, it is essential to imagine what it feels like to walk in that person’s shoes. I venture to say, it is vital to the success of the relationship in the role as a trusted adviser.

1. Are you familiar with the early signs and symptoms of dementia?

2. Have you ever spoken with your loved one about what happens if he or she is diagnosed with dementia?

3. Do you have the skills to communicate with your loved one who is exhibiting loss of executive function?

4. Do you know if your loved one prefers to age-in-place?

5. Do you know if your loved one can afford to age-in-place?

These are some of the vital questions and information you must ask or include as you start walking into a new normal because it is most unlikely that your loved one struggling with cognitive decline will come to you and share these types of thoughts. It is so important in your role as that trusted person, if you will, to be certain your loved one is heard and honored and his or her concerns and fears are supported.

“REMEMBER ME”

This story begins in Philadelphia, the “City of Brotherly Love” and you will see how true that statement really applies.

It started nearly 50 years ago with a group of childhood friends cementing their lifetime friendship in Philadelphia. It went on through high school, college, marriages, children, divorces, and sadly death. No matter where everyone was living across our Country the bond was never broken.

One friend, Joe, had great trials and tribulations along the way. He eventually found himself without close family and financial resources by the age of 50. He was struggling but nobody knew why...was it drugs, gambling, alcohol, or something else.

A large portion of the friends had moved to Florida and most living in the Palm Beach County area there was one answer, move Joe to Florida. It was the time for the friends to try and help both financially and support.

All of our lives have their own ups and downs, but this was different, it continued to get worse even when living near his closest friends. He seemed confused, forgetful and lethargic thus began a long journey of doctors’ visits and tests.

Finally at the age of 57 they figured out what it was, he was officially diagnosed with Early Onset Dementia. Faced with no financial resources and without the ability to drive, work and care for himself, where was he to turn?

Soon we learned Joe is one of hundreds of thousands of young people in America facing this debilitating disease and not knowing what to do. What resources were available? Was it possible to obtain government assistance, living assistance, and face this disease without help?

The gang painfully realized that the answer was no. This problem was much bigger than their friend Joe. After many phone calls, emails, long forms, tests, and doctors’ appointments, they finally got Joe settled in assisted living So that he may live with proper care and dignity.

Now faced with a new problem, how can they help not just Joe, but others as well? The goal was to start a foundation, offering annual scholarships to other people in need. Try to get resources available to people throughout the area.

Realizing that a nonprofit foundation would take a long time to set up, a member of the group reached out to Gardens Jewish Experience and spoke to Rabbi Moshe and Bruchy Cheplowitz. They quickly stepped into action, as their mission is to help the community and they felt strongly this was a perfect match.

A foundation committee was formed to help those suffering with this debilitating disease in our community specifically for those who are under the age of 65, clinically diagnosed with EOD and without financial resources.

In just under 3 months the foundation has raised over 40k and had a very successful first fundraiser raising 25k on its own. We had enough finances to give our first scholarship to Joe and our goal is to give out 2-3 scholarships in 2023.

From time-to-time, we’ll give you updates on Joe’s journey. Right now, he is in the right place with the best medical care and lots of faithful friends. Although he has dementia, he is blessed with the best friends a man could ever have.

We’ll try to help you navigate that maze of red tape in future newsletters. In addition to other “free care” 800 numbers, seminars, etc.

Imagine waking up and starting your day but forgetting what you are supposed to be doing.

Imagine waking up and not knowing what pills you are supposed to take.

Imagine waking up and forgetting your spouse’s name.

Imagine this happening in your 40’s or 50’s.

It is happening every day to people suffering from Early Onset Dementia (EOD) . You don’t hear about it very often because it is misdiagnosed, and people believe it only happens to older people. Well, that is not true, and it is more than likely impacting people you know and associate with everyday.

To some of you he is Joe, to others he is nameless. We started this charity to help raise funds directly used to house and provide proper care to those suffering from EOD. Please consider making a donation to help “Joe” and all the others that have fallen through the cracks. A small monthly contribution or a onetime donation will greatly help.

CAREGIVER BURNOUT

Nowadays, it is common to feel pulled in many directions as you juggle family responsibilities, your job and caring for an older loved one. According to the Administration for Community Living, nearly 80% of aging adults receive care from an “unpaid caregiver” or someone who is a family member, friend or neighbor. An unpaid caregiver averages about 20 hours per week of giving financial, emotional, social, physical and other forms of support including personal care help like feeding or hygiene assistance.

Caregiving is rewarding but can be challenging, especially over time. As much as it brings joy to help a loved one, it can take a toll emotionally and physically. It is important to know the signs of caregiver burnout. Early signs of caregiver burnout can include:

• Changes in appetite and sleep patterns

• Feelings of depression or hopelessness

• A sense of fatigue or lack of energy

• Mood swings, impatience, irritability or argumentative behavior

• Lowered resistance to illness

• Withdrawing from friends, family and other loved ones

• Lack of interest in favorite activities

• Everyday things feel challenging to accomplish

• Not taking care of your own emotional or physical needs

• Emotional and physical exhaustion

• Difficulty in focusing

• Growing sense of feeling resentful

There are ways to mitigate caregiver burnout. If you are considering senior care solutions but feel overwhelmed by the many options, CarePatrol of Boca Raton and North Broward can help. Founded in 1993 by a medical social worker who observed the trauma of a family whose loved one moved into the wrong type of community, CarePatrol’s mission has always been to provide families with a less stressful and simplified way to find senior care options. As a pioneer of senior care advisory services, CarePatrol is the nation’s largest and most trusted organization of its kind in senior care.

With over 20,000 pre-screened communities across the country, a CarePatrol Senior Care Advisor matches a senior with possibilities in assisted living, independent living, memory care, nursing homes or more. Your Senior Care Advisor is part of your team, scheduling and accompanying you on community tours and minimizing stress during move-in day. If needs change in the future, CarePatrol helps you explore new options. Best of all, CarePatrol’s services are at no cost to the senior and their family.

For anyone looking to understand more about aging, CarePatrol has launched an educational podcast called My Care Advisors. Episodes feature experts in the fields of health, financial planning, care options and more, giving seniors as well as caregivers and family members information to help them live their best lives.

When someone is affected by Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, it impacts their whole family. Family members often care for their loved one at home and are closely involved through all stages of the illness. Sinai Residences is dedicated to

reconnecting loved ones with peace and purpose.

It is important to recognize the distinction between dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia is the loss of cognitive function (thinking, reasoning, remembering) severe enough to interfere with daily functioning. Dementia itself isn’t a disease, though it’s associated with diseases like Alzheimer’s, and is irreversible when caused by illness or certain injuries. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, degenerative brain disease that is a major cause of dementia. It affects the part of the brain that controls thought, memory and language. One in eight people over age 65 suffer from dementia, with women more commonly afflicted than men.

A Memory Care neighborhood such as Sinai Residences – from dining to staffing to activities –is designed for individuals at all stages of memory loss. At Sinai Residences, each private suite is set in a safe and secure Memory Care neighborhood. Rooms are equipped with an emergency call system and monitored 24 hours a day. Indoor spaces are designed to reduce confusion and wandering. Residents can safely enjoy the outdoors in our secure courtyard and memory garden.
