WELCOME! Where has the year gone? It is hard to believe that our October allocation has come around again, and I’d like to start off by thanking you all for your unwavering support throughout 2023. We have some very exciting plans on the horizon coming into the new year, and I am eager to share them with you.

October promises to be a month of incredible entertainment with the ever-popular Big 80s Party on October 7, followed by Australia’s beloved wine and music pairing festival, Grapevine Gathering on October 21 featuring UK band The Wombats and home-grown music heavyweights Spacey Jane and Hayden James.

As a prelude to Hope at Honeysuckle, I am thrilled to announce the grand opening of our newest venue, Hope Estate at The Landing, on the Honeysuckle boardwalk.

A true taste of things to come, Hope Estate at The Landing is operating as a bar and restaurant showcasing our range of wine, beer and spirits complemented by a tapas menu curated by our recently appointed Group Executive Chef, Anthony Fullerton.

Anthony brings with him a wealth of culinary expertise, as well as ambitious plans for a signature steakhouse experience in the Hunter Valley and Newcastle.

It has been a great addition since the doors opened in early August, and we are looking forward to hosting some exciting events soon including Melbourne Cup on November 7 and New Year’s Eve on December 31.

Hope at Honeysuckle has had some very exciting developments over the last month with the approval of our Modified Development Application. We are eagerly looking forward to commencing construction in early 2024. The Honeysuckle location promises to be a vibrant hub encompassing our “Eat - Taste - Learn” philosophy, reflecting our commitment to creating unforgettable experiences.

On a personal note, our hearts doubled in size earlier this year with the safe arrival of our second grandchild, Hannah. A beautiful daughter for Jonno and Tia, and little sister for Harrison, who absolutely adores her.

With more projects in the pipeline, including Tower Whiskey Distillery in Pokolbin, I’m looking forward to sharing more exciting developments in the next edition. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy your club pack, and we look forward to seeing you at one of our venues or events soon. Here’s to the remarkable year that’s been and the even brighter future that awaits us.

THERE’S A FAMILIAR VOICE IN THE MAN CAVE Did you know… Michael Hope is on radio!

Yes, that’s right, Michael can now add radio Talk-show regular to his list of accomplishments. What started out as a two-hour guest appearance on Triple M network’s “Man Cave” has turned into a regular four-hour gig! Alongside Night Shift host, Luke Bona, and other regular guests like Adam McDonald from TV Series “Aussie Pickers” and James Lawson from Lawson’s Auctioneers the boys talk about everything from vintage Matchbox cars to pill-testing.

“Hopey”, as he’s known on the show says “I don’t mind having a yarn, we’re not always politically correct and I’ve got a head for radio so the Man Cave is perfect.” He goes on to say “being an early morning show we get an interesting mix listeners from truckies to shift workers to serious insomniacs and it’s broadcast nationally so you’re also catching people at different stages of their day. I really enjoy it”.

HOPE ESTATE AT THE LANDING...A TASTE OF THINGS TO COME It’s here Newcastle! As a prelude to Hope at Honeysuckle, Hope Estate has created a tasting bar at “The Landing” site on Honeysuckle’s boardwalk, Hope Estate at The Landing.

A true taste of things to come, Hope Estate at The Landing will operate as a bar and restaurant serving fantastic food under the direction of Hope’s Group Executive Chef and The AHA 2022 Regional Chef of the Year, Anthony Fullerton. Along with drinks from Hope’s vast array of products plus some extras, signature cocktails as well as wine, beer & spirit tastings. If you’re looking for a venue for your next celebration or work event, group bookings and functions are also available.

“We’re really excited to be able to bring our products and experiences into the city” says owner Michael Hope who goes on to say “this is a taster bar in more ways than one. DUSTY QUE TAKE OUT THE ABA CHAMPIONSHIP AT BEER & BBQ 2023 The third annual Hunter Valley Beer & BBQ Festival was fired up over the weekend, 22nd & 23rd April, at Hope Estate. Despite mother nature throwing some curveballs, patrons made the most of the festival and the 40+ Hope Brewery beers and ciders available on tasting.

The festival was host to the Steak Cookoff and Australian Barbeque Alliance Championship rounds. On Saturday 22nd April, Phil Thompson took out first place in the coveted Steak Category, and took home $1000 in prize money. A great effort for a newcomer to the SCA Comp, being only his third time competing.

On Sunday 23rd April, twelve of Australia’s elite teams competed in the ABA Championship across five categories. Dusty Que, from South Australia, took out the 2023 Grand Championship for the festival, taking home $1500 in prize money for the top spot. Butter Beard BBQ took out Reserve Grand Champions, with Triple B BBQ taking out 3rd Overall, as well as a tie-first place for a perfect 300 in the brisket category alongside Rob and Randi Thraves of Smokin’ Hot N’ Saucy.

Owner Michael Hope said, “It was great to see the patrons coming out to support the festival, the competitors and local producers. We are looking forward to amping it up in 2024.”

There is a feeling across Victoria region that 2013 may go down as the vintage of the decade. Low rainfall and plenty of heat from December onwards meant winemakers could obtain beautifully ripe fruit, which can be a challenge in parts of this very cool region.

2012 was an early budburst, fruit set and veraison season.

The wines produced are above average and have good fruit flavour with higher natural acidity than usual. In general, yields were lower than the norm.

Quality for the 2010 vintage is expected to be the best in a few years. Macedon Ranges had issues with rain during flowering, rain that came and went through the growing season, although generally to the advantage of the vines.

Yields were down 50% but what remained was good. A mild, indeed cool, growing season punctuated by between 4 - 10 days of extreme heat from the end of January into the first week of February.

The dramatic 2007 vintage recorded a 35% drop in red wine grapes across the nation. The red wine grape intake suffered the combined effects of drought, frost and bushfires during the growing and harvest seasons. Virgin Hills vines suffered through this diabolical season, yields were down 50% on average.

For 2006, vintage was 2-3 weeks ahead of normal because of the hot summer.

Yields varied across the region and in some locations were below average due to heat stress at flowering and a return of the early 2000’s drought conditions reduced fruit quantity and increased intensity and flavours.

Good Winter rainfall with average temperatures through budburst and flowering. Dry conditions through fruitset and veraison. Heavy rainfall in January and February and a cooler ripening period led to slow ripening and a later harvest.

During spring, flowering and fruitset was excellent. March and April were practically perfect. Quality was very good and in some cases excellent. Winemakers describe wines with good acid, bright deep colour and very spicy Shiraz.

2003 VIRGIN HILLS Following fairly good spring weather for budburst and flowering, summer came on hot and fast. The hot and dry weather caused some concern that the fruit would sweeten rapidly and result in a significantly early harvest.

Harvesting of Shiraz occurred from late March through April.

Sugar levels were generally high for most varieties, pH and acidity levels were excellent.

Picked April to early May. A warm season with ambient temperatures and blue skies ripening the fruit relatively early for Virgin Hills. Fruit was harvested in the early hours of the morning to optimise flavour and avoid the early autumn frosts that defoliate vines and expose the crop to unnecessary sunburn.

Picked late April to mid May. Severe frost (-7 deg) on 28th October reduced the crop severely and then two late frosts in April killed remaining leaves off. A warm and dry season with only 100mm of rainfall.

The Macedon Ranges region recorded a 50% increase in yield, as a result of good weather during the flowering period and lack of early frost damage.

1998 was the driest year in recorded history up to vintage and produced some of the best reds in history.

The 1997 vintage was described as ‘the best in 10 years’. Wines showed wonderful complexity and potential for great longevity.

Yields were down by about 30% due to low fruitfulness from the cold 1996 vintage.

Small bunches resulted in higher than normal sugars.

Weather during the vintage was fine and mild.

NEW ENGLAND / HAZY IPA A New England IPA (NEIPA) is a style of American IPA that features an intense, tropical fruit centric, hop aroma and flavour. New England IPA is a relatively new style originally brewed out of Vermont, New England in the United States. It’s heavily dry hopped to the point of being hazy and has a fuller body, smoother flavour and less perceived bitterness than typical IPA’s.

BARREL AGED QUAD NEIPA 2022 (ABV 16.9% | IBU 28 | EBC 25) A single barrel of a super strong New England IPA was aged for 9 months in a Damy French Oak, medium grain, light toast Hogshead. A very unique and interesting beer, hazy and dark orange in colour, candied citrus aromas, compote of stewed fruits, honey and coconut flavours.

Hand bottled and crown sealed, an all natural beer both unfiltered with zero carbonation added.

CRAFTY IPA - INDIA PALE ALE The modern day India Pale Ale (IPA) is hoppy, strong and bitter. They also have malt undertones and many boast a pleasant citrus flavour. It gained its name thanks to its huge popularity in British India and other outposts of the British Empire throughout the 19th century, as the abundance of hops and higher alcohol acted as a natural preservative for their long sea voyages.

CRAFTY PORTER / STOUT Porter, a type of dark beer, introduced in the 1700’s, that is well balanced and aromatic, with predominant notes of rich chocolate as well as hints of coffee, caramel, nuts, and sometimes a faint smokiness, combined with an often dry finish.

Stouts, as we know them, evolved from the Stout Porter, which was a very popular style in London in the 1800s. Stouts are a category of warm-fermented ale styles that are distinguished by their dark colour, generally an opaque deep brown or black, as well as a distinct roasted character that is often perceived as dark chocolate or coffee.

CHOCOLATE MILK PORTER (ABV 5.0% | IBU 35 | EBC 100) Milk Stout is a traditional sweet style of stout - our Choc Milk Porter is a modern version of that classic beer. Infused with milk sugar, cocoa and vanilla, this velvety smooth porter offers authentic chocolate flavours and a tempered bittersweet taste.

PUCKER Pucker are the sour treats in the Hope Brewery line up, discover three levels of sourness. Berliner Weisse is a beer style originating from the region around Berlin, Germany, in the 17th Century. This long forgotten style has been revived in recent years through modern craft brewing. Its main characteristic is a mild sourness and tartness with a light and fruity character. Hope Brewery uses kettle souring of the wort to produce their Berliner Weisse inspired beers.
