NOVEL NOOK

KANSAS CITY, KS

PROFESSOR, YEAR

DILSHAN OSSEN, SPRING 2024

SUMMARY

Novel Nook is a library located on the corner of West 39th Street and McGee Street in Kansas City, Kansas, creating a hub for the community to engage and interact with each other. This building features a series of public and private spaces that connect with each other, creating a space that the community wants to gather and connect with each other. Incorporating design ideas from the surrounding historically preserved buildings nearby, this brick building separates floors by noise level and extended hours for places like the cafe, auditorium, conference room and childcare center. Novel Nook creates a sense of connectivity for the community giving them a place to gather with each other, all while keeping the essence of a library at its core.

CRESCENDO COVE CABIN

LAWRENCE, KS

PROFESSOR, YEAR

DILSHAN OSSEN, SPRING 2024

SUMMARY

Crescendo Cove Cabin is a retreat home for a musician and his spouse. It is located right off of Clinton Lake in Lawrence, Kansas, allowing for a private yet scenic escape for this couple and their dog. Inspired by the musician this building was designed to imitate the crescendo symbol. The crescendo is a symbol that signals musicians to gradually increase the intensity and mood of the music throughout the piece. Coinciding with the idea of using natural light throughout the building to influence the mood of the building.

ARCHITECTURE ACADEMY

LAWRENCE, KS

PROFESSOR, YEAR

HUGO SHEWARD, FALL 2023

SUMMARY

The Architecture Academy is an architecture school located on Massachusetts St. in Lawrence, Kansas. Massachusetts St. is the main street that runs through downtown Lawrence and is home to a diverse range of shopping opportunities, making it a popular tourist attraction. In contrast to places like Chicago or New York City, the community thrives in the alleyways. Using the power lines as an inspiration, I created a frame around the building that mimics the way that alleyways capture the attention of the community.

Form Development

In contrast to places like New York City and Chicago the alleyways in Downtown Lawrence are a safe and efficient way to travel from place to place. With back entrances to buildings and no cars the alleyways hold a significance to the community. Wanting to draw in that community to this building, I mimicked the design of the power lines that flow throughout the alleyways. This creates a framework that captures the attention of the community.

Third Floor Plan

Cafe

The cafe sits along the intersection of Massachusetts St. and 11th Street to draw the community into the building and create an interactave enviornment for the architecture students. The idea stems from the Sunflower cafe and bike shop just a mile down the road, which hosts a place for the community to enjoy a meal or a cup of coffee while engaging in the bike community.

Makerspace

The Makerspace in this Architecture Academy is a place for students to be creative, messy and collaborative. Students are able to connect with the community due to the open windows yet still have a private environment to stay productive. The makerspace includes desktops with printers along with storage shelves while the desks and chairs move to create a free environment.

LAWRENCE, KS THE GREENHOUSE TRANSFORMATION

PROFESSOR, YEAR

NILS GORE, FALL 2024

SUMMARY

The Greenhouse Transformation, located in Lawrence, Kansas, was a DesignBuild experiance at the University of Kansas. Working with HomeWorks USA, an affordable rental housing for emerging adults aging out of foster care, a team of fourteen students completely designed and transformed a shed into a greenhouse, while also designing and constructing access stairs.

Project Goals

Our client, Frankie Foster, wanted to create a space where residents could engage with the community while also having the opportunity to grow their own food and save on expenses. She requested a greenhouse and a gathering space. Due to budget constraints, we were able to transform the shed into a greenhouse, build access stairs, and install a water collection system to ensure easier access to water for the greenhouse.

Rotation

Over time, this shed had shifted and collided with the garage behind it. One of our goals was to straighten and align the shed so that it was perpendicular to the garage. To achieve this, we jacked up the shed, slid two bars and rollers underneath it, and, as a class, pushed the shed until it was properly aligned. Pictured to the right is me jacking up the shed.

Foundation Correction

While the shed was already on jacks, we created molds to pour foundation footings with concrete at all four corners of the building. We then aligned the joists underneath the shed so that they were parallel to each other. This was crucial because the floor had previously been bowing, and realigning the joists helped even out the floor and prevent further bowing in the future. I assisted a team in pouring the concrete and straightening the joists.

Window

Window Installation

Windows Summary

Using the six panes of glass, each measuring 92”x46”, donated to the class, we were able to construct windows designed to withstand the snow and rain loads typical in Lawrence, Kansas. After cutting the wood to the correct dimensions, priming and painting it, we built the frames and installed the glass. The windows were then loaded into a truck for transport to the site. Once there, we cut holes into the shed and devised a method for safely transferring the windows. Working as a team, we carried them to the designated locations on the west, east, and south sides of the building, where the sun would provide the best light for the plants, and installed them.

THE GREENHOUSE TRANSFORMATION

Stairs

To provide access to the greenhouse, we designed stairs that resembled those typically found on a trail. This design was important because it ensured the stairs would remain functional, even as they settled over time. My role in this project was to create shop documents and determine the materials needed for the successful construction of the stairs. I also conducted research on the best installation methods. By using concrete blocks, wood beams, and gravel, we created a durable and timeless access point to the greenhouse.

Accounting

Throughout this project, I oversaw the finances. Our budget was $2,000. At the beginning, I predicted the cost for each category to help us realistically communicate with Frankie about what we could complete for her. Then, throughout the construction process, I tracked receipts and monitored overall expenses.

PERSONAL COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Certificate in Architectural Acoustics

SUMMARY

Being active in the community is something that brings me true joy. I enjoy being a part of music ensembles, whether that be through drumming, timpani, marimba or choir. Having a musical community has taught me to learn about more cultures, grow closer with a team, and have fun while engaging in the community. I have spent time learning about Drum cultures from all over the world and spent time developing my West African Drumming to play in concert. I have also been a part of the Faith and Music Team at my church since high school, playing the timpani, marimba, drums and participating in choir. My musical interests led me to start an undergraduate Certificate in Architectural Acoustics, blending my passions.

Faith & Music Team

Joining the Faith and Music team at my church gave me a way to get involved and impact the community. Since 2018 I have played timpani, marimba and the drums, and have fallen in love with community involvement. Learning how to use a pastime of mine to get involved in the community has truly been impactful teaching me how to search for new opportunities and impact people through my passions.

West African Drumming

After learning about drum cultures around the world, I became a part of the West African Drum Ensemble through the University of Kansas. I spent a semester diving into the Djembe drum and the Kenkeni drum. This led me to play in concert with Mario Pam from Brazil. This experience was eye opening, exposing me to a whole new culture of drumming. Drumming not from sheet music but from feeling.
