Cognitivebehavioraltherapy(CBT)focusesonexploringrelationshipsamongaperson’sthoughts,feelings,and behaviors.DuringCBT,atherapistwillactivelyworkwithapersontouncoverunhealthypatternsofthoughtandhow theymaybecausingself-destructivebehaviorsandbeliefs.Byaddressingthesepatterns,thepersonandtherapist canworktogethertodevelopconstructivewaysofthinkingthatwillproducehealthierbehaviorsandbeliefs.
DBTisheavilybasedonCBTwithonebigexception:itemphasizesvalidation,oracceptinguncomfortablethoughts, feelings,andbehaviorsinsteadofstrugglingwiththem.Byhavinganindividualcometotermswiththetroubling thoughts,emotions,orbehaviorsthattheystrugglewith,changenolongerappearsimpossible,andtheycanwork withtheirtherapisttocreateagradualplanforrecovery.
Theprimaryassumptionofpsychoanalysisisthebeliefthatallpeoplepossessunconsciousthoughts,feelings, desires,andmemories.Psychoanalytictherapyaimstocreatetherightsortofconditionssothatthepatientcan bringtheseconflictsintotheconsciousmind,wheretheycanbeaddressedanddealtwith.
