Feeding Therapy: The Best Option for Autistic Children that Suffer from Feeding Challenges Children who suffer from ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) face feeding challenges while food is presented to them. This problem, known as Dysphagia, starts with a few picky-eating habits. This disorder then takes a toll with time into severe selective eating or even a feeding or swallowing disorders. Here are some of the major behaviors of feeding disorders, after which a child should undergo feeding therapy: •

The child eats only when specific utensils are used or the food should be

presented in only a particular type. •

If the child eats only a few foods, it raises a big concern among his or her

parents. This may lead to weight-loss and growth issues in the child. •

If he or she is provided with food or some food which they do not favor, the

child becomes violent or in some cases melts down. •

The child eats food in an improper manner, which may lead to them getting

sick. •

Severe cases, where the child completely refuses to have food.

In such situations, a child undergoes feeding therapy. The feeding therapy helps a child with feeding and swallowing disorders, if they refuse food, accept only a restricted variety or quantity of foods and liquids, or display abnormal behaviors while eating that are inappropriate for his or her age. There are many reputed pediatric clinics near you that offer feeding therapies. These clinics have experienced speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists that specialize in treating the feeding and swallowing difficulties of children, with the help of feeding therapy. After undergoing such feeding therapies, your child will be able to have all types of food and drinks, and also have food on their own.
