CELEBRATIONS | VANESSA WONG & BARING LINGGI

My Big Fat Iban Wedding Vanessa Wong and Baring Linggi celebrated their marriage with a month of sunny wedding festivities in Sarawak

v

anessa wong and Baring Linggi had known each other for a long period of time before becoming a couple, as Baring was a close friend of Vanessa’s siblings. After dating for a year and a half, Baring planned a romantic proposal with the help of his sister, Sereni Linggi. “I already had an inkling of an impending proposal but was still clueless when Sereni invited us to join her for a dinner at the villa we ran, Cove 55. Walking in and seeing the candles, I still had no idea until he went down on one knee! I was in utter shock that it did not sink in till a week later,” Vanessa tells us. A month after the couple got engaged, Vanessa’s mother arranged an intimate engagement party in Bangkok and a week before the couple’s nuptials in Kuching, they

registered in the town’s city hall. After the registration, there was a private brunch of delicious homemade Sarawak laksa at Baring’s family home. Following the nuptials and wedding reception at Cove 55, the couple had an Iban ceremony in Baring’s father’s hometown, Kapit. “It was a whole affair on its own, you could call it our very own Big Fat Iban Wedding!” Vanessa exclaims. With the help of Baring’s sisters, the Kapit affair was a well-executed and memorable celebration which will be remembered in years to come. The reception at Cove 55 on the other hand, was inspired by a midsummer’s day and night dream as well as the groom’s love for grey. Both the concepts tied in perfectly with the venue, which resembled the couple’s

The wedding day was split into two parts, the first being the nuptials and tea ceremony in the morning followed by a cocktail and dinner reception later in the evening. Wedding highlights at the evening reception included a special singing performance by Baring’s favourite singer, Samantha James from OM Records, who flew down from Los Angeles to perform at the wedding. Although the couple didn’t want a first dance, the bridal party succeeded in surprising them with a classic rendition of Thriller where the groom broke out his famous Michael Jackson moves. The celebration continued on till the wee hours of the morning. ELIZABETH LEE & BENJAMIN YONG | CELEBRATIONS

Carnival Love

Elizabeth Lee and Benjamin Yong tied the knot in a series of beautiful ceremonies that reflected their respective beliefs and personalities

F

rom the first day they met each other, the chemistry between them has been quite strong as they possessed the same fun-loving persona and sense of humour. Their years of courtship culminated in a carefully planned proposal on the grounds of the Ciragan Palace Kempinski in Istanbul. A true romantic moment, Benjamin Yong got down on one knee and asked Elizabeth Lee to marry him after she found her engagement ring in a gumball machine he had installed onlocation just for her. As she said yes, fireworks exploded in the skies. The same festive atmosphere was carried over to the couple’s wedding celebrations. The party kick-started in Sydney where the bride was born and bred, with a tear-jerking

ceremony when the couple exchanged their vows in the beautiful interiors of the Sydney Opera House. The entire bridal party and guests then flew back to Kuala Lumpur for the second leg of the wedding celebrations. The traditional Chinese tea ceremony held at the Ritz-Carlton KL hotel did not fall short of being extravagant as well. But before that, Benjamin and his team of groomsmen had to perform a typical Chinese wedding activity. Their manly attempt to take the bride with them was ‘hampered’ by Elizabeth’s bridesmaids, headed by her sister Shen-Tel Lee who was also the maid of honour, with a series of difficult games that included putting the men to a flexibility test and egging the groom in declaring 10 reasons why he loved his bride. His sincerity ultimately prevailed and he was able to claim his blushing bride, who was clad in a Kwa by Michael Ong that’s elaborately stitched with golden phoenixes and dragons. Once the fun activities were over, the tea ceremony took place. Here Elizabeth received a hand-painted wedding basket filled with essential sewing items she would need as a wife, which was a tradition passed down from 38 malaysia tatler weddings

her mother’s side. Next, her mother-in-law Helen Read and her mother Betty Lee placed the custom-piece bridal tiara on her head. Helen also placed red paper flowers in the bride’s hair to symbolise her union with the family. Then, lion dancers escorted the couple to a traditional Chinese banquet dinner where 250 close friends and family enjoyed a lavish meal set amidst an Oriental-themed decor with red silk lanterns hanging around. After the formalities were wrapped up, the wedding took on a livelier note with a multitude of festivities at the couple’s carnival-themed dinner reception the next day, held at Chin Woo Stadium, KL. Keeping in mind Elizabeth’s love for carnivals and Cirque du Soleil, the vintage stadium was converted into a funhouse in lieu of a conventional sit-down dinner. There were gourmet food stalls, photo booths and various carnival games such as lucky ducks, spin the wheel and slam dunk to entertain the guests. The crown jewel of the entire event was a carousel in the centre of the hall where the couple and their bridal party were introduced as they made their grand entrance. It was truly a grand wedding that had the entire town buzzing with excitement.

ELAINE DALY & NICK BODEN | CELEBRATIONS

Two Halves of aWhole The moment they met, Elaine Daly and Nick Boden knew there was something special in store for them

W

hen asked what song would best represent her and Nick Boden, Elaine Daly picked out Al Green’s Let’s Get Together. The lyric goes, “I’m so in love with you, whatever you want to do is all right with me ’cause you make me feel so brand new,” and we found the laid-back, soulful vibe of the song to match the couple’s DNA perfectly. Love often comes knocking when you least expect it. For former beauty queen Daly, she was focused on her work as a TV personality, model and actress when a mutual friend introduced her to Boden, a chiropractor originating from South Africa. They clicked right from the beginning despite their seemingly different backgrounds. “Nick is everything I could ask for and more. He is intelligent, caring, kind and has a great sense of humour,” says Daly. It was a relatively short courtship before the two decided to tie the knot. Daly pointed out the moment when she knew she had found the one, “I was very sick shortly into our relationship. I have never had someone genuinely care for me and show such compassion like he did. I know it’s probably because he is such a great doctor but it was more than that. He truly showed me what I thought I would never be able to find, unconditional love.”

Elaine Daly & Nick Boden WEDDING RECEPTION December 6, 2014 Puncak Dani, Genting Highlands

WHEN WHERE

Everything fell into place within the span of a few months. A sudden change in holiday plans with friends saw Daly and Boden making a trip to Maldives by themselves. They were standing at the end of a long jetty watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean when Boden got down on one knee and popped the question. Time never became a worry when planning for the big day even though Daly described herself as a perfectionist and would never do anything half-heartedly. It took the couple about three months, with the help of their wedding planners, to plan three weddings in three separate locations. “We were both super relaxed in the lead-up to the wedding, which was surprising as I thought I would be more stressed out. I guess it is probably because we knew that this was something we had planned well for and we were so ready for the moment, Daly reveals. Puncak Dani, a private bungalow settled amidst the lush greenery of Genting Highlands, set the stage for an intimate garden-themed wedding. Daly and Boden malaysia tatler weddings 45

invited 150 of their closest friends and relatives for round two of their wedding celebrations, complete with ‘get the bride’ obstacles set by Daly’s entourage who called themselves Elaine’s Army and a traditional tea ceremony in honour of her mother’s Straits Chinese heritage. Shades of pink, fluttering ribbons and fairy lights created a romantic and whimsical atmosphere on the grounds. Even the usual monsoon rain gave way to a beautiful rainbow, making the day even more special and magical. As the sky darkened and the stars came out to play, Daly changed into a shimmery gown by Sonny San to match the twinkles all around. The newlyweds then had a simple cake-cutting ceremony before proceeding to dance the night away to their favourite songs played by a DJ and live band. Daly described the experience as magical, relaxed and beautiful. “Marriage is sacred to me. It has to be with someone who loves you even when you are at your worst. It is a relationship between two people who have decided they are only whole when they are together.”

Fairy-tale Ending Sonya Davison and Judd Sanchez celebrate their union with a dream wedding in Bali

S

een in commercials as well as television shows like The Apartment, model and television host Sonya Davison has a deep appreciation for all things artistic. However, just like any other young lady, she has had her fair share of ups and downs when it came to finding Mr Right. Her luck changed for the better when she met her husband at the VIP preview party for the grand opening of Ku Dé Ta in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. “I attended his birthday party a few months later and we became great friends the following year. We would workout, meet for drinks, and have many lunches and dinners together, but we were always seeing other people,” Sonya recalls. 48 malaysia tatler weddings

One special day, after a night of endless conversation until the sun came up, the two finally expressed their feelings for each other. “I guess our feelings have always been there, but it took that special moment for us both to realise it... falling in love with your best friend is truly the best kind of relationship in my opinion,” Sonya reveals with a content smile. After getting to know each other for more than a year, Judd decided to pop the question. His romantic proposal involved a trip to Bali where he proposed at sunset on an isolated beach trailed with lanterns. He went all out with butlers and a seven-course meal set out on a four-poster bed. “I hardly ate a thing; I felt like my world was spinning in such an amazing way. When he dropped down on one knee, I was surprised, dizzy and absolutely elated! Of course, I said yes, immediately,” Sonya tells us. The couple enjoyed being engaged for a year before actively planning the wedding. They decided on having it in Bali as they have many romantic moments there and wanted to share the location with loved ones. venue. With Judd’s support and his only request was to have an open bar, Sonya planned her dream wedding over the span of two years. She designed every detail from the wedding ceremony floral arch and the sixtier wedding cake down to the napkins and custom logos on the goodie bags. The classic, timeless and elegant white theme ensured that the ambience of the wedding reception was nothing short of a fairy-tale. Sonya walked down the aisle with her father to Time to Say Goodbye by Andrea Bocelli and then walked out with her husband to Viva la Vida by Coldplay. The ceremony included the release of two white doves and personalised vows which brought the couple to tears. This was followed by a two-hour free flow cocktail session which really got the party going. Thanks to the amazing DJ, guests were dancing in between courses and had to be ushered back to their tables so they could be served. There were fire dancers and pyrotechnics during the cake-cutting ceremony, followed by the bouquet toss and a special garter toss containing a flask of whisky to ensure that the guys participated. malaysia tatler weddings 53

Simply Unforgettable It was all laughter and joy for both the Tan and Helfman families when Gabrielle Tan and Michael Helfman tied the knot

W

hat happens when two creative and happygo-lucky souls come together as one? Mischief, of course, and definitely not boring. Longtime lovebirds Gabrielle Tan and Michael Helfman are known in town for their quirky sense of humour and fun-loving spirit, so it should come as no surprise that their wedding celebration should reflect their personalities. The intimate and exclusive affair, which is spread out in a time frame of a month, consisted of four celebrations that were carefully and meticulously planned and executed from the heart. Their love story began when they met each other at an event at The Gardens Mall. Their mutual friends tried to set them up together one night and Michael, aware of what his friends were up to, casually asked her on a date. Their first date was spent at a bowling alley and eventually more dinners ensued after that. As they got to know each other, over time Mike and Gabby—as they are fondly known as—started to let their guard down and fall in love. Their relationship culminated in Mike popping the question to her at KLCC Park, with the glittering lights of the Twin Towers as a witness. After malaysia tatler weddings 55

months of deliberating and planning for the big day, everything came together quite nicely. This was evident from their touching church ceremony which took place at the St George’s Church in Penang, the church Gabby attended while growing up. The couple was surrounded by beloved friends and both sides of the families. Gabby walked down the aisle arm-inarm with her father Datuk Seri Robert Tan, accompanied by the song To Make You Feel My Love, sung by her sisters Liz and Nikki with her brother Timmy on the piano. Around 80 guests witnessed this beautiful moment. The wedding reception in Penang was held at the Parkroyal Hotel. Aligned with

ZAIREEN ISKANDAR AND RAZMAN RAZALI | CELEBRATIONS

You’re All I Need Longtime friends Zaireen Iskandar and Razman Razali’s special bond inevitably led to their joyous union as husband and wife

I

t was a relaxing Saturday afternoon at The Social in Bangsar. Many, including Zaireen Iskandar and Razman Razali had flocked to the venue to unwind and enjoy the weekend. Introduced by a friend, Zaireen instantly fell for Razman’s charm after playing a few rounds of pool with him. “I remember laughing at his jokes (can’t remember if they were poor), he laughed at some of mine and simultaneously made fun of my lack of pool skills even though he was being supportive,” Zaireen recalls the first time the two met. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Over a decade later and after officially going out for a year, Razman finally popped the question. “Shall we do this, baby?” he asked a smiling Zaireen who replied with a simple “Sure.” She continues to explain, “I suppose I can say it was an unprepared

proposal. We always spoke about marriage and our future together with children. There was no doubt that we both wanted it to happen. There was no ‘down on his knees’ moment, there was no ring prepared but there was that pivotal moment together where we both knew that this was ‘it’ and it was time.” The couple celebrated their nuptials with two high-spirited wedding events. The traditional akad nikah ceremony was held at the stunning Cove 55 in Kuching. The weather was perfect for a lunch gathering followed by a simple barbeque-themed wedding reception in the evening. Sunlight bathed close friends and members of both the families as they dug into the couple’s favourite barbeque dishes including lamb and beef hotdogs with jalapeno and red onion relish, cheeseburger slides and delicious carne asada sliced sirloin steak catered by the couple’s good friends Noreen Ramli and Awangku Irawan from Cantina Moderna. My Sugar Bakes on the other hand prepared a delicious dessert spread for the evening. Twinkling fairy lights adorned a transparent marquee while fresh flowers, candles, mismatched bottles, Belian wood and quotes from the couple’s favourite songs were the main decor on each long table. The soiree continued till late with catchy beats from DJs Tunku Nadia & Arabyrd of The Twinkies.

The KL wedding reception held at Hilton Kuala Lumpur hotel, which was put together by Zaireen’s sister-in-law Dr Aida RazaliMonaghan and Pak Abu, was a glamorous and classy affair. It was graced by a handful of very important people in society who couldn’t be any happier for the couple. Guests were ushered into the hall by the harmonious tunes of the three-piece acoustic band while the talented Az Samad Trio band performed throughout the reception. According to the bride, the highlight of the wedding receptions for her was simply being there, marrying the man of her dreams and having a few events that represented them and celebrated their union. What made it special was the fact that all their friends and family who attended the wedding events have witnessed their relationship develop over the last decade. A lot of them even thought, “geez, finally!” malaysia tatler weddings 65

Pop with Colour Not only do dazzling coloured gems create an attractive personalised look but according to ancient culture, they also contain individual healing properties and symbolic meaning

J

ewellery is a universal form of adornment used even before the written language or spoken word, and although diamonds are known to be a girl’s best friend, coloured gemstones have always been among the most popular and expressive forms of jewellery. Shining bright in various shapes and sizes, coloured gems create a vibrant and captivating look while lifting your spirits

by allowing you to express your individual personality through a range of colours and design. Long before diamonds were found worthy of jewellery, precious gems like sapphire, ruby and emerald were revered by many while semi-precious gems such as the garnet, peridot, amethyst, citrine and blue topaz were just as popular. Gems were also believed to have special powers including being able to cure specific illnesses and

relieve insomnia. The purple amethyst for example, can be seen in Chopard’s Imperiale lace pendant and cocktail earrings and is known as a spiritual stone often used for general healing and meditation. It has also been said that sleeping with a piece of amethyst beneath one’s pillow can promote intuitive dreams and inspired thoughts. Besides the amethyst, rubies such as the 7-carat beauty featured in Piaget’s high jewellery white gold necklace, have been said to increase levels of energy and divine creativity as well as improve one’s confidence, intuition and spiritual wisdom. The yellow diamond showcased in one of Tiffany & Co’s stunning rings, also has its own unique characteristics and meaning. The yellow colour symbolises happiness, joy and friendship while the diamond, which is also categorised as a gemstone, is known to increase the power of the emerald and the amethyst. This is why healers often have rings or necklaces set with diamonds surrounding these gems. The semi-precious carnelian gem found in Van Cleef & Arpels’ Perlée ring, is a member of the quartz family and is a zodiac birthstone for the signs Leo and Virgo. According to folklore, carnelians aid in protecting the traveller after death and guard against evil. They are also thought to help purify the blood, relieve menstrual cramps, improve fertility and enhance passion. Known as one of the most valuable semi-opaque stones, lapis lazuli is among the gorgeous semi-precious stones used in the Amulette de Cartier collection. A fragment of sky captured in a deep-blue gem for eternity, lapis lazuli is a dark blue microcrystalline rock that often sparkles with golden pyrite inclusions and is reminiscent of the stars scattered across the midnight sky. According to ancient culture, working or meditating with the stone is said to bring matters more clearly to the mind. Besides that, it was also commonly used to keep the limbs healthy and free the soul from error, envy and fear. When it comes to appreciating the beauty and mystique of vibrant gemstones, Bulgari does not fall short. The rubies, turquoises and mesmerising emeralds featured in Bulgari’s Odissi necklace from its MVSA collection will add a pop of colour to any look as it captivates all with its enchanting beauty.

The necklace evokes the traditional Indian dance with its delicate yet sinuous movements, while the gems themselves are sourced from all over the world. A prominent highlight in the necklace, the emerald is a gem of spring and rebirth and it offers protection at sea. It is also the sacred stone of the goddess Venus which was thought to preserve love, hope and faith. Lastly, the calming blue of the turquoise complements the colour of the emerald in the necklace and as one of the oldest protection gems, it is a symbol of peace and friendship.

The

Dream Maker Designer Oscar de la Renta’s innate understanding of what brides want translates into exquisite bridal gowns fit for a fairytale BY ELISABETH GALVIN

A

merica’s great and good from Hillary Clinton to Ralph Lauren queued up to attend the funeral of Oscar de la Renta, who died in October at age 82 after a long battle with cancer. One of the world’s most celebrated fashion designers, De la Renta is known for his romantic, feminine and glamorous designs. But he will perhaps be most acutely missed for the exquisite bridal wear he created over just eight years that was based on an intuitive grasp of the significance of the wedding day. “Any girl from any walk of life dreams of that special dress, and I try to make that dream a reality for her,” De la Renta once said. “I have always felt that my role as a designer is to make a woman feel her very best. A wedding gown will live for generations in photographs.”

Astounding artistry

“Oscar de la Renta understood that it is the bride who makes the dress beautiful. His gowns are designed to enhance the female features and form,” says Cecile Chen, managing director of Hong Kong’s exclusive stockist, Trinity Bridal Hong Kong. De la Renta diversified into bridal wear in 2006 and his collection also includes veils, shoes, fashion jewellery and bags. To ensure a perfect fit, each gown has a built-in corset that is handmade by seamstresses at De la Renta’s New York studio—some of whom have worked for him for more than 40 years. “Embroidery and appliqués are hand sewn and each gown is thrice quality checked,” says Chen, adding that embroidered gowns are the most popular. “His thread work and beading are so masterfully put together and wonderfully unique.” Perennial favourite

Actress Kate Bosworth wore an Oscar de la Renta gown for her wedding day. But perhaps the designer’s most famous dress was to be his last. Less than a month before he died, one of the world’s most anticipated brides, Amal Alamuddin, became Mrs George Clooney wearing a cream bespoke gown with a spectacular, sweeping circular train. The romantic creation featured two layers of tulle with 14 yards of Chantilly lace that had been especially flown in from France. The bodice was hand-embroidered with pearls and diamantes and the slightly off-the-shoulder straps gave the A-line style a demure look. The life of Oscar de la Renta Born: July 22, 1932 in the Dominican Republic, died October 20, 2014 at his home in Connecticut. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2006 and had been in treatment since that time. As a student he studied painting in Madrid. First job was as a fashion illustrator at Cristóbal Balenciaga. Launched his label in New York in 1965 and was one of the first American designers to create a fragrance. A philanthropist, he established an orphanage in the Dominican Republic, La Casa del Nino, in 1982. Walked down the aisle twice: His first wife was a former editor of Vogue and died in 1983. He is survived by his second wife, Annette. Family values: His stepdaughter Eliza and son-in-law Alex Bolsen both work at his label. Has an adopted son, Moises, from the Dominican Republic. John Galliano was given a second chance by De la Renta, who took the sacked Dior designer on for a three-week residency in 2013. The world’s most famous women adored his designs, including Jackie Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Beyoncé and Naomi Campbell. His funeral in New York was attended by Henry Kissinger, Hillary Clinton, Diane von Furstenberg, Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang, Donna Karan, Anna Wintour and Annie Leibovitz, among others.

and frilly bridesmaids frocks. But there was only one designer she cared to wear for her own wedding to Josh Kelley at Christmas in 2007. Heigl’s gown was stunning and unique: a formal, fitted style contrasted with oversized ruffle detail at the neck and shoulders. This sort of original touch is what makes De la Renta’s gowns stand out and the magic of Oscar de la Renta will live forever through the happiness he gave to brides around the world, on one of the most important days of their lives. Latest looks

Oscar de la Renta’s Bridal 2015 collection, the last to be shown before his death, is full of variety. The collection stood out for its imaginative detail at the neckline. The Charlotte gown features gossamer-light fabric swathed across the shoulders to form barely-there full-length gloves. Another gown stood out for its boa-like feathers that formed striking off-the-shoulder straps. The delicate pearlised

print and bead embroidery of the Camilla gown decorate the shoulders beautifully. The neckline of the Cornelia is given a formal look by tulle caraco embroidered with white threadwork, while the Chantilly lace of the Colette gown highlights the décolletage. In a clever use of accessories, a sleeveless, ivory duchess satin trumpet gown is decorated at the bust with a crystal and white pearl bow broach, and complementing crystal and pearl earrings. In contrast to the long pieces, the Catherine gown is cut above the knee and is described as a white silk faille dress with embroidered organza bodice and sleeves. In sync, a white crinkle tulle veil is worn very short at the back of the head. Two gowns in particular encapsulate De la Renta’s romantic vision. The Clara is a white silk ball gown with taffeta origami embroidery that showcases the designer’s elegant style, while the Constance is stunning in its simplicity: an ivory radzimir trumpet gown with a dramatic bustle at the back. malaysia tatler weddings 125

Bridesmaid Beauty Designer Celest Thoi shares advice on picking the right bridesmaids dresses and reveals the inspiration for her latest collection, the Celest Thoi Entourage WORDS SANGEETA DEVI

ARRESTING ALLURE Celest Thoi Entourage ensures that bridesmaids complement the beauty of the bride with charm and elegance

W

hen it comes to selecting the right bridesmaids dress, the last thing you would want to do is force your best friends to wear unflattering dresses that do not suit them. “Brides have to understand that bridesmaids also want to look good and comfortable at the same time, especially if they are tasked with things to do at the wedding ceremony,” says leading bridal gown designer Celest Thoi. As your bridesmaids may vary in size and shape, Thoi advises to dress them in the same

126 malaysia tatler weddings

colour with different silhouettes or necklines. Sweetheart necklines for example are popular as they suit all figures, shapes and busts while the V-neckline creates the illusion of an elongated neck. “I think it’s always nice to look sort of uniform in a group, especially since it will stand out in the wedding photos,” Thoi tells us. According to her, the latest trend in bridesmaids dresses is to either have the same shade of colour with different materials and styles or have dresses that also differ in shades but still relate to each other somehow.

It is also important to shop wisely when selecting a bridesmaids dress because not all bridesmaids would have the same budget for the dress. Keeping that in mind, gowns that your bridesmaids could wear to other occassions, such as formal dinners, are definitely ideal. Due to constant requests by bridal parties, Thoi has finally launched a bridesmaids collection called Celest Thoi Entourage. Inspired by the soft colours and texture of the hydrangea flower, each gown from the collection is made with delicate tulle and chiffon to create a flowing ethereal impression. “I love hydrangeas and admire how the colours are perfectly contrasted in soft pastel tones,” Thoi reveals. Besides incorporating soft romantic shades, Thoi has made the bold move of introducing the colour black into the collection. Not only are the black dresses seductively striking, but they add an air of mystery and exclusivity to a chic wedding. “I am waiting for a brave bride to have a full black entourage,” says Thoi, adding that every black dress is only a single unique piece. In Celest Thoi Entourage, comfort and practicality is combined with the designer’s trademark timeless, elegant strokes to produce the perfect bridesmaids collection using only fine materials embellished with Swarovski crystals.

BLACK

CONNECTION Soon to be grooms should heed the advice of five master tailors before deciding on a perfect wedding suit WORDS TIEN CHEW PHOTOGRAPHY MOHAMMAD ISMADI STYLING M PRAMALATHA

STY LING TIPS

LORD’S TAILOR 1. SHOES

“Shoes define a man,” says Loh. He advises that if you’re looking for versatility, opt for black capped toe lace-ups, as they are able to suit any occasion ranging from a boardroom meeting to a ballroom function.

2. FITTED FORM

“In this time and age, many tend to go for more form fitting suits,” says Loh. This is the current trend in menswear. However, those with a bigger body frame are advised not to choose a suit that is very form fitting.

3. FABRICS

The material of a suit plays a vital role in ensuring that the suit drapes well on the groom and also complements the weather.

“E

veryone should own a tuxedo, for a good tux would last you a lifetime,” says Kenny Loh, creative director of Lord’s Tailor. A tuxedo typically signifies a formal affair, especially for those who wish to make their weddings official and conventional. His general rule of thumb is that if the reception is at night then a dark coloured suit will be a safe bet. If it takes place in the day and the occasion is less formal in nature, light colours should be the go-to choice. Vests or cummerbund should also be incorporated in the style as they help the wearer to maintain a straight posture. He suggests that the groom plays around with stylish accessories to keep the look fresh and that includes pocket squares, self-tied bowties, lapel pins and most importantly a matching pair of shoes.

“Everyone should own a tuxedo, for a good tux would last you a lifetime” malaysia tatler weddings 129

STY LING TIPS

DE-CATANO 1. THE PHOTOGRAPHER

“A good photographer makes a lot of difference in ensuring that the groom wears his suit in the best possible manner,” advises Chong.

2. THE THREE-PIECE

According to Chong, a three-piece suit is more formal than a double breasted jacket as it gives the wearer a greater sense of strength.

3. THE TAILOR

A tailor’s skill plays a huge role in determining the fitting and styling of your tuxedo or dress suit. However, the decision about your suit of choice is also equally important.

“The most important aspect of a wedding suit is to match the environment” 130 malaysia tatler weddings

F

uture grooms should always try to get advice from master tailors when making a wedding suit. Ultimately, a perfect suit requires good measurements that go well with the chosen fabric. This is to ensure that it drapes well on the wearer. Speaking on recent trends for wedding suits, Alan Chong, founder of de-Catano, says that the most important aspect of a wedding suit is to match the environment. A well-fitted suit will not look good on a man if it does not suit the occasion. For example, if the reception is on the beach, then a breathable material like linen is recommended. Nevertheless, a good tailor would be more than happy to design something to your liking while maintaining the core element of a tuxedo, such as the versatile grey tuxedo pictured above which can suit many occasions.

STY LING TIPS

WARDROBE “Go for a classic. Why? Because a classic look is timeless”

1. THE FIT

The fit is important to make sure a suit is an extension of the man. Shoulders cannot be too wide or too narrow. The suit should fall nicely on your chest, waist and hips. It cannot be too body hugging or loose at the same time.

T

he three things that a man should show off when making an impeccable statement with his tuxedo is the right fit, proper fabric and most of all, a perfect design. “Go for a classic. Why? Because a classic look is timeless,” says Lim Fang Heng, CEO of Wardrobe. If you are not into a black traditional tuxedo, you can choose to get a navy blue or maroon one, as they are modern and stylish to be worn for a night reception as well. Another simple rule to take note of when selecting a suit is that a groom with a bigger body build should not try to fit himself into a double breasted jacket as it will make his frame look larger and someone with a smaller frame should also avoid a suit that is too tight. If you are not in the market for anything classic, then opt for something classy and distinguished.

2. THE OCCASION

To see what type of suit best fits you, first determine the venue and the dress code of the function. For a daytime celebration, opt for a lounge suit. A tuxedo will suffice for a night dinner as it suits our cultural environment.

3. THE TREND

“The trend has gone back to the fitted look,” says Lim. He advises to play with colour to mix things up. malaysia tatler weddings 131

STY LING TIPS

BINWANI’S “A proper wedding suit should appear modern and stylish”

1. FABRICS

“When choosing the right fabric for a suit one must consider the occasion in which it is worn, along with his height and weight. We recommend nothing less then a Super 100s pure merino wool or even a wool and silk composition to give the suit more lustre,” advises Ravin.

2. ESSENTIAL ACCESSORIES

Bowtie, vest, cummerbund, cufflinks— these are the few essential accessories you should have and the usability depends on the type of suit and style. 132 malaysia tatler weddings

A

proper wedding suit should appear modern and stylish. You can do this by accessorising the suit in a non-traditional way with different shades of colours, together with vests, bowties, silk brocades, belts and shoes. Proper fitting is the most crucial aspect when it comes to dressing the groom. Ravin Binwani, director of Binwani’s, advises that the hem of the jacket should be no longer than the middle finger, the sleeve should grace the top of the hand and the shirt cuff should peek out from the jacket sleeve no more than half an inch. Trousers on the other hand should skim the heel of the shoes and break slightly over the top of the front of the shoes. The four essential parts that the groom should pay attention to are the shoulders, chest, waist and hip areas. Follow these rules of thumb and you should look your best on your big day.

STY LING TIPS

BESPOKED 1. PERFECT PAIR

To make an ideal suit, Chang advises that both the bride and groom be present at the boutique to ensure that the right suit is picked to match the bride’s wedding dress.

2. TAILOR TALES

Both the groom and tailor should work hand in hand in choosing the right suit. Essential information like the venue, purpose and theme of the celebration should be made known in order to make the process of designing easy.

3. WHITE WEDDING

Chang also thinks that the groom would look more dapper, clean and pure if he wears a white tuxedo for the church wedding.

T

o ensure that a groom looks his very best on his wedding day, he needs a suit that is nothing short of perfection. Such is the stance Ian Chang of Bespoked holds on to for the quality of a good suit. A perfect suit requires many facets and cooperation from both the bride and groom to ensure that their choice of clothes gel harmoniously. Every criterion such as the venue, theme or even purpose of the celebration has to match. Getting married is a holy act and Chang recommends a white tuxedo if possible, as it makes you look clean and pure. He also notes that if you are afraid of looking too traditional in a tuxedo, play around with the fabric and colour to keep the look chic and modern, such as his creation in the picture above. Go for contrasting coloured or playful patterned accessories to stand out further.

Stay on top of this year’s bridal trends with five different makeup looks, while we give you some extra tips on how to look even more fabulous on your big day WORDS CHIN POH NEE

T

hey say a bride looks most beautiful on her wedding day. Little do they know that plenty of preparation comes into play weeks or even months leading up to the big day. With a lot of arrangements going on, the final call comes from the makeup that you put on on the day of the wedding. Since you will be assisted by your makeup artist, it is very important that both you and your makeup artist have a clear idea of the type of makeup that would suit you and one that is in line with the wedding theme. Thus, to

14 2 malaysia tatler weddings

make it easier for you, we spoke to five makeup artists who specialise in wedding makeup and found out what you should look out for and the questions you should ask when you are with your makeup artist. Also, we have you covered with five of the year’s trendy makeup styles for that blushing look you have always wanted. From a glowing, fresh day look to a dramatic night look, each of these makeup styles have one thing in common—to accentuate your best features while looking fabulous on one of the most important days of your life where you should shine like a star.

tips

DOWN TO EARTH “Brown and earthy colours are best used as eye shadow colours on your wedding day.” IT’S IN THE EYES “Natural style false lashes are the best. I prefer to play more with mascara. As for coloured contact lenses, I would advise against wearing them. If the bride insists, I would suggest that the colour should not be too bright.” LIGHT KISSES “It’s best to go for light lip colours on your big day. I would prefer it to be more glossy than matte.” SKIN TYPES “If you have oily skin, avoid foundations with a creamy texture and never ever use glittery powder. Likewise, if you have dry skin, avoid using matte textured foundations.”

Lancôme “Typically for wedding makeup, I prefer a look that’s fresh and not so thick. I focus more on the complexion, making it flawless and glowing. This year’s bridal makeup trend focuses on a joyful, fresh and sweet look. It makes the eyes look bigger and fresher, and the complexion lighter and more natural. The key words we’re looking at here are ‘French effortless chic’—less is more.” — Zamri B Zainol, makeup artist from Lancôme

THE FOCAL POINT “Usually, I’d pick the focal point of the makeup based on the bride’s facial contours. Different people have different angles, so it really depends on which feature I should highlight.” WHAT SHOULD I TELL MY MAKEUP ARTIST? “First of all, discuss about your wedding concepts like what you’re planning to wear. For me, I prefer an open discussion with the bride so she can get the result she wants and we’ll both be happy.” malaysia tatler weddings 143

tips

Clé de Peau Beauté “Brides will look romantic with warm russet and copper eye shadow colours, especially if there’s an added bit of dark brown for a soft and smoky effect. Pair your romantic eye makeup with a pretty pink shade of blusher on the apples of the cheeks and cherry red lips for a flirty and feminine final outcome.” — Cheah Ee Ee, makeup artist from Clé de Peau Beauté

CORALINE “Coral blushers are the best for weddings... they will help brides avoid the dreaded ‘doll’ look.” BRONZE GODDESS “Use bronzer as one of your powders to bring warmth to the face. The combination of bronzer, blush and a highlighting powder will add more dimension to your face.” FLUTTERY EYES “When it comes to false lashes, get fuller corner lashes, individual lashes or semi permanent lashes... they really open up the eyes as opposed to the strip lash.” BITE SIZED “The ‘bitted lips’ look is gorgeous on brides as it adds a pop of colour to the lips without being too defined. For fair skin, use shades like Extra Rich Lipstick 301, 311 and 310 from Clé de Peau Beauté. For tanned skin, the Extra Rich Lipstick in shades 106, 211, 303 and 313 would be great. For dark skin, shades 306 and 307 are the best.” WHAT SHOULD I ASK MY MAKEUP ARTIST? “Try to do a trial run before the wedding day. Ask them if they work on location, and what should you do if they are unable to make it on that day. Also ask them if they’re familiar with your particular skin and hair type.” 144 malaysia tatler weddings

tips

LIGHT OF THE DAY “For a day look, you want to bring out the best of your features with earthy or natural toned colours. Emphasise on rosy lips and blusher for a timeless look.” HYDRATE “For oily skin, use a hydration gel and foundation primer like Dior’s Hydralife Essence Gel and Diorskin Radiant Base. The gel minimises the pores and brightens the skin while keeping it smooth. Diorskin Radiant Base gives the skin a luminous effect and complements your foundation.” BE YOURSELF “The key is to look like yourself, but better. It’s important to know what sort of makeup matches and brings out your personality. For example, if you are demure but opt to go for a dramatic look, do you think you would still look good when you look back at your wedding photos years later?”

Dior “This is an evening bridal look suitable for all skin tones and complements every eye shape. Evening wedding looks can be slightly more glamorous and dramatic with sultry eyes and bold shadows. I use the Dior trend and go all-out on the eye makeup while keeping the lips shiny and glossy with a soft pink colour.” — Matt Ng, chief makeup artist from Dior

WHAT SHOULD I ASK MY MAKEUP ARTIST? “Think about the environment of your wedding venue and discuss your makeup concerns. If you do an outdoor wedding, you might want to make sure that your makeup lasts and doesn’t melt under the sun. Share your facial skin condition with your makeup artist so the right products are used on your skin to ensure that your makeup lasts.” malaysia tatler weddings 145

BIG DAY BEAUTY | MAKEUP

tips

COLOUR PALETTE “For fair skin, go for sheer eye shadow colours. Soft taupes and cool pinks will be flattering. For tanned skin— brown, dark brown, copper brown, light brown and gold will be nice. For dark skin, go deep. Soft shades will fade away on darker skin tone. To make your eye shadow stand out, stick to warm shades rich in pigment like metallic golds and purple berries.” TO FAKE, OR NOT TO FAKE? “For a more natural look, use individual false lashes. They blend with your natural lashes, look more subtle and make your eyes stand out compared to a full strip. Go for differing lengths to create a natural fluttery look. Nestle them between the natural lashes rather than on top.” POP LIPS “Neutral, brown and pale lip colours tend to look washed out in photographs, so pick a lip colour that’s one or two shades brighter than what you would normally wear.” WHAT SHOULD I TELL MY MAKEUP ARTIST? “Have your makeup trial at least three weeks before your wedding. Wear a white T-shirt if you’re having your makeup tested so that you can see how it looks against a pale colour and take a picture of yourself in natural light to see how it looks.” 146 malaysia tatler weddings

Estée Lauder “This look is all about soft pops of colour on the cheeks, eyes and lips. It embraces romance so it’s soft and natural. It’s all about having a fresh base and glowing complexion. The overall look feels romantic, feminine, enchanting and sophisticated.” — Joyce Lee San San, chief makeup artist from Estée Lauder

Shiseido

tips

“This look is for those who prefer a clean and feminine appearance. The focal point would definitely be the lips. I used Shiseido Veiled Rouge OR303 and Shiseido Lacquer Gloss OR303. The bright lip colour sets a natural yet understated bridal makeup look which is very popular currently. It gives the lips a sheer and defined gloss look. The effect is not too heavy and the colour is evenly toned out.” — Delvin Tan, makeup artisan from Shiseido

COLOURS OF THE EYE “For fair skin, I would suggest using the Shiseido Satin Eye Color Trio RD299 as it gives a clean and natural effect. Fairly tanned brides, I would propose the Shiseido Satin Eye Color Trio BR209 because it does not only give a natural look but it maintains a healthy skin colour. For dark skin, Shiseido Satin Eye Color Trio BR214 would be the best as it creates a glowing effect around the eyes and makes the skin look brighter.” BIGGER AND BRIGHTER “False lashes really depend on the shape of the eyes. I usually prefer using false lashes to bring out the natural beauty in brides and an additional full volume mascara on top.” SHADES OF ROUGE “I would suggest using Shiseido Veiled Rouge OR303 for fair skin, Shiseido Perfect Rouge RD346 for tanned skin and Shiseido Lacquer Rouge OR508 for dark skin.” WHAT SHOULD I TELL MY MAKEUP ARTIST? “The most important thing is to communicate beforehand. It is important to let them know what look you want and at the same time get them to suggest something suitable for you. Be comfortable in voicing out your opinion and needs so that you will have confidence in them. You need to know that you are in good hands on your big day.” malaysia tatler weddings 147

Breathlessly in Love A little bit of romance and girlish playfulness is what this style is all about. Attain the ethereal Earth goddess look by intertwining your hair with fresh flowers like baby’s breath in haphazard places. The messy waves and uneven braids will give it a breathlessly flushed look, swept in the waves of romance. malaysia tatler weddings 149

The Grecian Style Every woman wants to look like a goddess on her big day. Emulate the winsome beauty of mythical Greek goddesses with this all-around braid while keeping the hair in place. It allows you to look regal and composed, just like a queen. 150 malaysia tatler weddings

Tousled Beauty Flowers are a running favourite in bridal hair trends, and it’s not difďŹ cult to see why. They add ounces of romance to your overall look, and which bride would not want to look like a princess on her big day. Go for a halved faux-ponytail by twisting the hair at the sides and securing it into a ponytail. The result, a feminine and elegant look. malaysia tatler weddings 151

Mermaid Mane At first glance, it may seem like an ordinary fishtail braided hairstyle. However, upon closer inspection, the hair can be seen sectioned into three parts to join in the fishtail braid. Hair is purposefully left slightly undone, while fresh flowers are weaved into parts of the hair giving it the extra touch of romance. 152 malaysia tatler weddings

The Intricate Knot This look is perfect for an outdoor-themed wedding, where mother nature remains unpredictable. Whether the wind blows a little stronger or the humidity and sweltering heat gets to your hair that day, this tight and intricate bun will keep every strand of hair in place. You can still look good while withstanding the elements. malaysia tatler weddings 153

TATLER FOCUS | A CUT ABOVE

The Complete Beauty Package As its name implies, A Cut Above goes the extra mile to pamper a modern-day bride from head to toe before her big day at any one of its luxurious salons

M A CUT ABOVE THE REST At its core, A Cut Above is all about a drive to excel and to be the best

ention A Cut Above and two things immediately spring to mind—having your hair done and also the name Datin Winnie Loo who is the creative director of the prestigious brand. Founded in 1979 by Datin Winnie and her enterprising husband Dato’ Richard Teo, A Cut Above might have its roots firmly entrenched in the hair salon business but the past three decades have motivated the brand to spread its wings into newer frontiers. Similarly, modern brides in today’s day and age look for more than just having their hair cut and styled for their wedding. They seek for a haven of sorts to retreat to in order to beautify

themselves before the big day. A busy bride juggling her day-to-day activities while planning for her wedding will not be able to make pitstops at different locations to get herself ready for the wedding. By visiting A Cut Above, a bride-to-be is able to have her beauty concerns addressed, all in one location. From the moment you walk into any of its salon, be it the tucked-away one at Pavilion KL or the bustling MidValley Megamall branch, be prepared to be treated like a VIP. You will be ushered to a plush chair and offered a cup of coffee, tea or water as well as a menu of experiences to choose from.

A Grooming Guide Marcus Teo, the current second-generation force at A Cut Above, shares some grooming tips for the bridegroom and his entourage. Who said only girls should have all the fun? • Plan wisely so that you have your hair cut a few weeks earlier. That way, there’s time for the hair to grow propery before the wedding.

Aside from the standard hair cut, styling and colouring by experienced hairstylists (and even from Datin Winnie Loo herself), you could also opt for hair treatments that will ensure your locks look fabulous. Popular favourites at the moment at every A Cut Above salon are the Brazilian Keratin treatment to eliminate frizz in the hair and also the extensive Kérastase hair rituals that target different hair concerns. Brides with short hair can always get hair extensions done at the salon as well. Other beautifying services to choose from include having your bridal makeup done by the salon’s stylists, who you will be impressed to learn are well-versed in the art of makeup and hairstyling. There are also skilled manicurists and masseurs available, should you decide to further pamper yourself. It is also highly recommended that you go for a reflexology massage while you have your hair cut and your nails polished, all at one time. In fact, the salon’s front desk is able to order food and drinks from various cafes in the mall so you can have your meal while waiting for your hair to be done. If you do not have the time to go to any of the salons, you can always request for an out-

of-salon service in which the team at the salon will come to you instead. This option will give you a chance to arrange for your entire bridal party including your bridesmaids, mother and motherin-law to be prepped up for the wedding. Last but not least, it is not only brides and their entourage who are welcome to visit A Cut Above. Guests who wish to look their best for a special occasion can be rest assured that they will be rendered an A-class service at any of the A Cut Above salons be it for a hair, makeup or manicure treatment. After all, that is what the salon stands for—an all-in-one beauty centre for anyone and everyone. ■

For more information on the services provided, call A Cut Above at: Bangsar Shopping Center – 03-2094 9555 Bangsar Village II – 03-2283 2233 Mid Valley Megamall – 03-2938 3131 Parkson Pavilion KL – 03-2141 3232 Sunway Pyramid – 03-5635 2222 or email A Cut Above at customercare@ acutabove.com.my.

• Similarly, check if you have any strands of grey hair so you could immediately fix them with a hair colour. • I highly recommend that you and your groomsmen give our Scalp Renew treatment a try. It will leave your scalp feeling clean and energised. • Pamper yourself with a reflexology massage while indulging in any of the treatments provided at the salon. • If you are up for it, do have your nails manicured. Go for clean nail plates and trust me, your bride will definitely thank you for that! • Do not be afraid to use styling products on your hair to get the right look you have always wanted.

✓ Silky Tresses

What: Kérastase Chronologiste

hair treatment Where: Centro W Salon, The Gardens Mall and A Cut Above, Pavilion Why go: To nourish scalp and hair Duration: 90 minutes To restore your hair to its former crowning glory, the latest Kérastase Chronologiste in-salon hair treatment is certainly one to try out. The Chronologiste Ritual, described as the

finest hair care treatment ever created by Kérastase, calls upon the time-stopping and age-defying power of the Mimetic Caviar Concentrate to restore dull hair back to life. Nestled inside the posh glossy black walls of the private room in Centro W Salon, we got to try out the new treatment, which began with an invigorating scalp wash with the Le Bain Revitalisant to cleanse scalp impurities and smoothen hair fibre. Once the hair is towelled dry, the Caviar Concentrate is mixed with the La Crème de Régénération hair masque and applied on the hair and scalp. Then, the specially trained hair stylist will perform a series of head massages that will not only relax the senses, but work with the masque to transform hair fibre and rejuvenate the scalp. When the masque is washed off, the hair stylist will give the hair a simple blow dry with no styling; the rejuvenated hair will fall perfectly into place, smooth and supple to the touch. The treatment is finished off with a touch of the lovely scented Le Parfum en Huile serum.

Leading hair salon A Cut Above also offers the Kérastase Chronologiste treatment as it is the ultimate indulgence every brideto-be deserves. Containing a combination of the most precious essential active ingredients, the regenerating properties of the caviar in the Kérastase Chronologiste treatment is maximised at the hands of the salon’s professional yet friendly stylists who are well trained in their craft. From special treatment customisation depending on the type of hair you have, to unique massage techniques, the entire process at the salon is an unforgettable pampering, multisensory experience that will see you leaving the salon relaxed, beautiful and all ready for the big day.

✓ Flawless Face What: Triniti skin series treatment Where: Nara MediSpa Why go: For total facial renewal Duration: Three visits

To significantly even out your skin tone, reduce wrinkles, and increase collagen production so you can look fabulous on your big day, an ordinary facial will not suffice. Fortunately, Nara MediSpa’s revolutionary Triniti non-surgical photo rejuvenation treatment can do the job in just three sessions. The Triniti skin series begins with the FotoFacial RF Color Correction treatment which will reduce uneven skin tone, sun damage and age spots. During your second visit, you will proceed with the Refirme treatment to firm the skin. Your final visit will include the Matrix IR Fractional treatment to reduce wrinkles and smoothen the skin. The treatments use significantly less light energy compared to conventional IPL or laser treatments, making it safe, effective and virtually painless.

What: Intensive skin detox & refining facial Where: Energy Day Spa, Great Eastern Mall Why go: For a clearer, renewed complexion Duration: 90 minutes

To achieve a flawless acne-free complexion before your pre-wedding photo session, a skin detox facial is the way to go. In search of the best detox facial, we decided to try one out at Energy Day Spa. We loved the spacious premises of the spa and the calming red date tea served before the start of the treatment. Another thoughtful gesture was tucking a bolster under our knees for better posture as we settled comfortably on the bed. Since one of us was suffering from a bad bout of breakouts, the beautician avoided using the usual scrub cleanser during the double cleansing process. She performed an allergy test on our neck before gently applying AHA onto the entire face and left it on for 10 minutes to exfoliate and detox the skin. The tingling sensation was minimal and we did

158 malaysia tatler weddings

not feel any discomfort. We loved the brief pressure point massage which used an oil that smelled wonderfully like a forest. Cleansing, toning, extracting and massaging were all done with the gentlest of touches and care. We could feel our face breathe anew after the treatment, with a more refined complexion that is baby soft to the touch. The skin remained supple the morning after, too.

✓ Toned Body

What: Slimming treatment Where: Meng Beauty & Slimming, Bangsar

Shopping Centre Why go: For a trim body Duration: 120 minutes The slimming treatment begins with the use of an electrostimulation machine that wields an infra-red light to activate microcirculation and break down fats. After stimulating

the body, the G5 cellutec machine is used to massage the lower body to eliminate toxins and uid around the adipose clusters responsible for cellulite storage. Another machine is then used on the arms and upper body to stimulate the skin as the motorised palpating rolling action releases localised fats. Results can be seen after one session, however, clients are recommended the 10-session course for better results.

What: Coolsculpting treatment Where: Beverly Wilshire Medical Centre Why go: To get rid of stubborn fats Duration: 60 minutes per body part

The Coolsculpting treatment at Beverly Wilshire Medical Centre is a nonsurgical fat reduction procedure that can get rid of stubborn fats on your body gently and effectively. It uses a unique, focused cooling technology to freeze and kill fat cells without destroying other tissues in the skin. The treatment requires no downtime and it is the only FDA-approved procedure that is safe and effective enough to rid the body of fats especially around the tummy, arms, inner thighs and love handles.

✓ Smooth Skin What: Tropical Rainforest spa experience Where: The Spa at Mandarin Oriental

Kuala Lumpur Why go: For silky smooth skin Duration: 140 minutes Recently refurbished, The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur has got a hot new treatment inspired by the tropical climate of Southeast Asia. The exotic spa journey will start off with a rejuvenating foot ritual followed by tropical spa body treatments including a body polish, body wrap and the Asli massage, which embodies healing traditions originating from many corners of Malaysia. Guests can customise their spa journey by choosing from a delicious selection of wraps and body polishes such as the hibiscus and rose body polish or the Mococa Borneo wrap which uses the natural antioxidants in cocoa to nourish the skin.

What: Furless waxing Where: Block B, Jaya One Why go: For smooth, hair-free skin Duration: Varies according to waxing area

It’s a fact that waxing is a better hair removal method than shaving as waxed hair takes longer to grow back. Besides that, waxing also removes dead skin cells while shaving could cause cuts and razor burn. However, when it comes to finding the right waxing salon, it is important to find a place that makes you feel comfortable and where good hygiene principles are practised. The Furless waxing salon does just that by ensuring they never double dip. This means that a new spatula is used for every scoop of wax applied. For Brazilian waxes, you are given antiseptic wipes to clean your intimate area before the waxing begins. Staying true to the salon’s motto of ‘being fearless’, the waxing therapists ensure that you are relaxed and unafraid throughout the process. Quality is also very important to Furless. Believing that every customer should receive only the best, the salon carries three types of imported

160 malaysia tatler weddings

waxes for sensitive skin, long coarse hair, and short hair to make sure even the shortest stubble is removed. Immediately after each area is waxed, a slight hand pressure is placed to stop the pain from lingering. Then, a cooling gel is applied to the waxed areas and a special ultrasound machine is used to further reduce any pain.

✓ Relaxed Mind

What: Pre-wedding treatment package Where: The Spa, Hilton Kuala Lumpur Why go: To de-stress Duration: 120 minutes

CONTRIBUTORS: JACQUELINE WONG; CHIN POH NEE; TAN XI VOON

Having tried this treatment ourselves, we must admit that it is pretty exceptional. As we entered the luxurious spa, we were greeted by friendly staff and given a form to fill out so that we could customise the experience

according to our desires. The treatment began with a Nepalese tea scrub made of bamboo powder, apricot oil and shea butter to remove dead skin cells while leaving skin hydrated. This was followed by a Fitness Refresh oil massage to release tension in the body. Lastly, our worries were caressed away as we experienced the hydrating facial using Ridokis massage tools. Just as that was done, we were lulled into a deep sleep with a relaxing Shiatsu massage.

What: Timeless Relaxation Journey package Where: CHI, The Spa, Shangri-La Rasa Sayang

Resort & Spa Penang Why go: To refresh the mind and body Duration: 150 minutes Set within a secluded corner of the resort enclosed by soaring centuries-old rain trees and a tranquil seashore, CHI offers 11 spa villas and a yoga pavilion. The Timeless Relaxation Journey package begins with a pampering aroma bath followed by a CHI Balance signature massage where acupressure and pure oriental element oils are used to harmonise ch’i flow. The soul-nourishing journey ends with a customised facial to address specific skin conditions.

Love Comes Softly Bride-to-be Kim Raymond dishes out about her romance with fiancé and soulmate Keith Foo and her exciting countdown to her big day at the end of the year WORDS LILY ONG PHOTOGRAPHY ISMADI MOHAMMAD

I

f you are browsing through Kim Raymond’s Instagram profile, chances are you will encounter cute pictures of her and her fiancé, actor Keith Foo. From affectionate shots during shared car rides to snaps of their workouts together in matching outfits, their love for each other is evident for all to see. Yet, when I mentioned what a lovely couple they made in their pictures together, Kim blushed. “Despite what people think, we are both not romantic in nature,” says this sweet, slender fashion plate. According to Kim, there was no formal proposal. The couple chose to get married when they realised they were ready to take the next step together. “We just talked things over and decided we should get engaged. That was that!” In the age of dramatic gestures, their down-to-earth approach to tying the knot was like a breath of fresh air. Tell me about your first meeting with Keith. Please share how and when this fateful moment came about. We have actually been friends for 12 years now. We were close friends before and he moved to Indonesia for work in between, so we lost contact. When he came back two years ago, we crossed paths again and that’s how we started dating. Why is he special? He is a down-to-earth and kind-hearted person. We have learnt to be more patient and grounded after we got together and we do so by reminding each other of where we were 10 years ago.

CONCEPT: M PRAMALATHA; HAIR: KAY TUAN FROM CENTRO W SALON; MAKEUP: JOYCE LEE FROM ESTÉE LAUDER; OUTFITS: ALIA BASTAMAM

How long have you been together? We have been together for two years now. How did you know Keith was the one for you? I think, for me it happened on the day I realised that Keith was the exact person that my father has always said he had envisioned me marrying.

So when will the big day be? Is there any significance to the date in particular? It will be somewhere at the end of December this year. There was no particular reason for us to pick the date. We are both quite busy this year and we thought that the end of the year would best suit both our schedules. What are the events we can look forward to for the wedding celebrations? We plan to have a joint bachelor and bachelorette party since we are already registered and legally married (laughs). We definitely will have a church and tea ceremony but the dates have not been decided. One wedding will be in Gemas, Negeri Sembilan, which is where Keith is from where else the other will be at the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur.

From your experience, what is the key to a happy, healthy and fulfilling relationship? We try not to make a big deal about things because when we do, often things become what they are not. Another important factor is trust, of course.

How do you and Keith split the decisionmaking between yourselves? So far, Keith has left the decision-making to me but I share with him my ideas and ask for his opinion because I want it to be our day and not just mine!

How are the wedding preparations getting on at this stage? To be honest, we have not been rushing into making any decisions; we are just taking it one day at a time. I think eventually, things will come together beautifully. We are still deciding on wedding planners. Wedding planning involves so much decision making! It really leaves my mind boggled all the time.

How are the designs of the wedding dresses coming along? I haven’t decided on everything yet but I know I want Alia Bastamam to design one of my dresses. She is one of my closest friends so it has been easy and relaxing working with her. Whenever we meet for drinks, we share our ideas on the wedding. It’s only recently that I finally decided what I want so it is now in the works!

DOWN-TO-EARTH Kim is taking things one day at a time when it comes to planning her wedding. She is pictured here with friend and designer Alia Bastamam

xotic locations and breathtaking scenery spice up the milestone occasion that is an engagement or marriage and add to the sentiment value of the special moment. For many couples, having a prewedding photo shoot in a foreign land or organising an overseas wedding has in fact become a norm. There are many destination wedding photography packages on offer but if you are looking for something truly wonderful that will last you a lifetime, hiring a photographer with destination wedding know-how will prove invaluable. We talk to two photographers with a wealth of experience in documenting your special day away from Malaysian shores. Zung of The Photoz has led his team to more than 1,000 wedding photo shoots to date. He has travelled far and wide, six continents to be exact, in his countless commercial and private photography jobs. However, Zung explains the significance of shooting a wedding, “It is the most important day of their lives and they have chosen me to document it in pictures. It is truly an honour and I want to present them with photos that are real and accurately portray their love story.” For Mun Keat from MunKeat Photography, he enjoys taking up the role similar to that of a movie director when shooting at an exotic location. Everything from determining the theme and treatment to the venue and attire is carefully planned to produce the most memorable set of photos. This begs the question of how involved the photographer is with the planning of a couple’s destination wedding. According to Zung, the photographer can act as an

I have learned and picked up many tips and tricks throughout the years of covering overseas wedding shoots. Things like choosing the best time for portraits and the actual ceremony will affect how the photos turn out.” Mun Keat says that looking for and hiring a photographer for the big day is half the work, “It requires some effort on your part in determining which photographer to work with. In this case, packages are more stressfree. But if you want personalisation and control, hiring your own photographer is the way to go.” According to him, personal photographers are willing to go the extra mile, covering post-wedding gatherings or candid moments without extra charge. Zung adds, “It is important to not only get a photographer who takes great pictures, but also one who is well-travelled. Little details 200 malaysia tatler weddings

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DESTINATION WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY THE PROS Mun Keat (MK): Unlike Malaysia, which is located on the equator, foreign countries experience softer lighting and a longer golden hour that helps create beautiful photos. Zung (Z): Scenic locations make for gorgeous backdrops straight from the camera. DO NOT BE OVER AMBITIOUS MK: Keep things simple and be realistic with what you have and what you can achieve. KNOW YOUR COMFORT LEVEL Z: To help them feel confident, I would hold a fun demonstration with the couple 10 days before the actual shoot and go through some tips on how to hide their flaws and look good. BE PREPARED TO START THE DAY EARLY MK: If you are shooting at tourist spots, you need to get there before the crowd does for more space and privacy. FIND THE RIGHT SEASON/TIMING MK: Research the best dates for the look you want. Spring and autumn are popular for their mild weather but winter can be something quite special if you are up for it. LESS EXPECTATION, MORE APPRECIATION Z: Things don’t always go according to plan. Keep an open mind and you might be pleasantly surprised.

TRY THE PATH LESS TRAVELLED MK: The Eiffel Tower has been photographed to death at this point. Suss out different locations that help tell your story instead.

like knowing which airlines to avoid, which airports to transit and what to pack will make the whole experience a lot smoother.” A solid portfolio makes deciding easier. Couples are more inclined to choose someone who has been to the country of choice. Zung and Mun Keat reveal that many of their clients are results of secondary connections and word-of-mouth recommendations. When in doubt, go with the images that speak to your heart. “My photography can be described as simple, classic and timeless. I think people are appreciative of this evergreen style,” says Mun Keat. Similarly, Zung’s popularity is largely due to his ‘go for it’ attitude and enthusiasm, which has earned him the moniker, Ninja Photographer. “I don’t experiment when it comes to weddings. I always deliver 100 per cent of what I promise. On top of that, I put in an extra 50 per cent to try and execute different things,” says Zung.

SECURITY AND ACCESS MK: Budget for customs clearance if you plan to bring in your own props, equipment and decorations. Bear in mind that certain venues would require a permit to shoot. ENGAGE THE HELP OF WEDDING PLANNERS MK: Don’t sweat it. Hire someone reputable to help you with the planning. HAVING SOMEONE LOCAL ALWAYS HELPS MK: Locals know the hidden gems and it is usually easier to get permission to shoot when you speak the same language. PLAN EARLY Z: Get in touch with your photographer well in advance to allow for more meetings and discussions. The more he knows about you, the easier it would be for him to tell your story. BE CLEAR ABOUT WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU Z: Profile shots? The scenery? The ambience? Communicate what matters to you most so both you and the photographer are on the same page.

The to of Exotic Honeymoon Destinations

Whether you’re planning a long trip or a brief escapade, Vanessa Tai recommends 26 unique destinations for you to choose from.

a is for Aruba

PHOTO: (AMANRESORTS) AMANRESORTS.COM/AMANKORA

If you thought Aruba sounded vaguely familiar, that’s because it was popularised by the Beach Boys in the hit song, Kokomo. Apart from the usual beach activities, this Carribbean island also offers plenty of other attractions such as the mysterious Guadirkiri Caves, and Arikok National Park, which consists of a diverse array of lava formations and limestone formations.

b is for Bhutan

A kingdom famed for its remote and pristine beauty, and its emphasis on its citizens’ wellbeing—they were the ones who pioneered the Gross National Happiness index—Bhutan is one of those fabled places you have to visit in this lifetime. For a truly unforgettable experience, book your stay at Amankora, a series of award-winning lodges spread across the central and western valleys of Bhutan. Because of its historically isolated topography—think 7,000-metre high peaks in the north and low-lying plains in the south—you and your beloved will certainly get a sense 208 malaysia tatler weddings

of being cocooned away from the rest of the world. During your stay in Bhutan, you can opt to stay at just one of the lodges and explore the surrounding areas. However, if you’ll like to better experience what else the country has to offer, the team at Amankora is able to customise a journey for you that includes its various lodges located in Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey, or Bumthang. Amankora Paro, which is situated 30 minutes from Paro International Airport, is where most travellers usually start their journey. The 24-suite compound features beautiful natural elements such as rammed-earth walls and wood-panelled interiors. While there, be sure to trek up the breathtaking Tiger’s Nest Monastery, located along the cliff-side of the upper Paro valley. From Paro, you can venture towards the other lodges located several hours away. Amankora Gangtey is nestled in the scenic but little-visited Phobjikha Valley, and offers panoramic views of the broad valley and the 16th-century monastery, Gangtey Goemba. For a

c is for Christmas Island

Christmas Island is a territory of Australia located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, south of Indonesia. Because of its strategic position, Christmas Island culture is a melting pot of influences from Asia, to Europe, and of course, Australia. Also, because of its relative isolation from the rest of the world—the entire island only has a population of 1,402—you and your love will definitely feel like you’re in your own little world here. One of the best places to stay on the island would be the luxurious Christmas Island Resort. Its clean and contemporary facilities integrate seamlessly with the surrounding natural beauty—calm, azure waters and lush greenery. If you consider yourself a nature lover, Christmas Island will be a veritable treasure trove. Sign yourselves up for a guided Rainforest Walk through the island’s national park. At 135 sq km, it takes up 63 per cent of the entire island and you’ll get to see rare flora and fauna species such as the famous migrating Red Crabs and the endangered Abbott’s Booby. Or, take to the waters and explore some of the world’s best scuba-diving and snorkelling spots. From a vast array of tropical fish species to turtles, sharks, and even whalesharks and mantas (between November and April), there’s plenty to see beneath the deep blue. For something a little more slow-paced, the various beaches are perfect for going on those long, romantic walks.

d is for Denver, Colorado

Denver may not be the first city you think of when it comes to romantic cities but the capital of Colorado actually has quite a few options when it comes to a romantic holiday. The Brown Palace Hotel & Spa used to be a favourite of former US president Dwight D. Eisenhower, and is also popular among honeymooners because of its old-world charm. Hokkaido is Japan’s northernmost island prefecture and is renowned for its rugged beauty and spectacular cuisine, especially its seafood. One of the best ways to immerse yourselves in Japanese culture would be to stay at a traditional ryokan (Japanese inn). For over 1,300 years, the ryokan tradition has developed and maintained the Japanese spirit of omotenashi, which is a form of respect and admiration for Nature and its four seasons. This is why whenever you visit a ryokan, you can expect the cuisine, floral decorations, and even the staff ’s uniforms to reflect the current season. There are plenty of beautiful ryokan in Hokkaido to choose from, but for a truly luxurious escapade, Takinoya Ryokan is second to none. During your stay at Takinoya, you and your sweetheart can spend idyllic days exploring the many natural attractions in the area. One such attraction is Jigokudani, also known as ‘Hell Valley’, which is an aptly-named valley located just above the town of Noboribetsu Onsen. This is the main source of Noboribetsu’s hot spring waters and here, you’ll find hot steam vents, sulfurous streams, and other forms of volcanic activity. From the valley, you can follow the various walking trails through the wooded hills to reach other sulfurous ponds or mud ponds. Just be sure to hold on tight to each other!
