The American Legion Department of Indiana now has a dedicated service officer, Jennifer Tyler, stationed at its state headquarters in Fort Benjamin Harrison, on Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This has brought significant convenience and efficiency to veterans and their families who need assistance with benefits, claims, and other veteran services.
Previously, many veterans and their families had to navigate the traffic and parking challenges of downtown Indianapolis to access these critical services. Now, with the service office located at Fort Benjamin, accessing support is easier and more accessible than ever. The new location offers a quieter, more relaxed environment for veterans to receive the help they need.
Tyler, who brings years of experience in veteran services, is focused on enhancing the efficiency of the support offered by the American Legion. One of her primary goals is to shorten the call list, which has been a source of frustration for many seeking timely assistance. By streamlining the process, she aims to significantly reduce response times, ensuring that veterans receive the attention and support they deserve more quickly.
This addition is part of the American Legion's ongoing commitment to serving those who have served our nation. With Jen now on-site at Fort Benjamin, the Department of Indiana is better equipped than ever to meet the needs of Indiana’s veterans and their

A LEGACY OF SERVICE
The Albright family's journey from Hoosier Boys State to the Space Force
BY JOSH MARSHALL
In a small town in Indiana, the Albright family has always believed in the power of service and giving back to the community. This ethos has shaped their lives and careers in ways they could never have imagined. The story of Dexter and Conner Albright is a testament to the impact of programs like Hoosier Boys State and the enduring value of commitment and duty.

on the role of first vice commander. "I didn't have the time, but there was a sense of duty," Dexter explains. "I wanted to help veterans and ensure the post was wellorganized."
Dexter's involvement deepened, driven by his belief in giving back to those who had helped him in his life. "When I joined the National Guard at 20, I was lost. The military gave me direction and purpose. Helping others is my way of paying that forward," he says.
The Call to Serve It began when Conner Albright was selected to attend Hoosier Boys State by the dean of Whiteland High School. Post 1919 in Greenwood sponsored his attendance, setting the stage for a life-changing experience.
Dexter recounts their first visit to Post 1919, where they met Dave Everett, the then-commander of the newly formed post. Dave's enthusiasm and dedication was infectious, and despite Dexter's initial reluctance to get involved, he decided to support the post by becoming a member, out of gratitude for sponsoring Conner.
A Father's Unexpected Journey What started as a simple act of support quickly evolved into something much more. Dexter, with his background in information technology, found himself creating the website for the post, setting up social media accounts, and eventually taking
Conner's Path to the Space Force For Conner, Hoosier Boys State was a pivotal moment. "I remember thinking I was in trouble when I got called to the dean's office," Conner laughs. "But it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. Once I realized I was selected for Hoosier Boys State, I was thrilled, and the program taught me about government, leadership, and the importance of civic duty.”
Conner's journey didn't stop there. Inspired by his father's service and his experiences at Hoosier Boys State, he pursued a degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering at Purdue University. His hard work and dedication paid off when he received a full ride from the Air Force and later got selected for the Space Force.

Reflecting on his decision to join the military, Conner says, "It was more than just a career choice. It was about giving back and serving a greater purpose. Hoosier Boys State played a significant role in shaping that mindset."
Continuing the Legacy Today, Conner is set to embark on an exciting career in the Space Force, while Dexter continues to support Post 1919 and other veterans' organizations. Their story is a powerful reminder of the ripple effect of service and the lasting impact of programs like Hoosier Boys State.
As Dexter proudly states, "We live to serve. That's what it's all about." For the Albright family, service is not just a duty; it's a legacy that continues to inspire and uplift their community.
The Albright family's journey from a small town to the heights of the Space Force is a testament to the power of service, dedication, and the impact of The American Legion, Department of Indiana programs.

"I thought I knew what I was doing..."
BY DAVID RING, PRESIDENT, OWNER, INDIANA FUNERAL CARE

Mom and hospice provided excellent care for Dad before he died in 2009. Then mom got sick, cancer. She was determined and courageous. My brother came home to take care of her, and, with the help of hospice, she, too, received excellent care. Mom died in December, 2012. I knew what I was doing... we had been through this before. I’m in the funeral business. WRONG!
I have been advising people for years to plan their funerals in advance. But, “do as I say, not as I do!” certainly described. Until you go through it, you don’t understand how debilitating it is. You just don’t think clearly. Sometimes, you feel like you are in a fog. Other times you feel like you are watching from a far away hilltop. Decisions are hard, even simple decisions. I am in the funeral business and I see this all the time, I know what to do. WRONG!
Fortunately, my wonderful co-workers softly took me by the arm numerous times and said, “David, you really don’t want to do that, you always said you wanted to do this.” or, “David, your mother would have much preferred this, not what you selected.” They knew me, they knew and loved my mother and father. What if they had not been there to help me? What if I was not in the business and went to one of those corporate funeral homes that claim to be lower price, but sell you up?
People that plan funerals in advance achieve three important goals: they make wiser decisions; they spend less money; the survivors are much more satisfied with the funeral or memorial service because they know that is what their loved one and friend wanted.
Pre-arranged funeral plans are portable and can be revised. If you move to a warmer climate or closer to the kids, plans can easily be transferred to another funeral home. If you change your mind about something a couple of years from now, you can make that change.
I thought I knew what I was doing...

Post 355 donates $50,000 to support veterans and disaster relief again

A year ago, American Legion Atkins Saw Post 355 in Indianapolis donated $55,000 to The American Legion National Emergency Fund (NEF). Post 355 Commander Dwayne Sloan explained the support was due to NEF’s direct benefit to veterans and their families.
On June 3, Sloan, on behalf of Post 355’s Legion Family, donated another $50,000 to NEF, presented to American Legion National Adjutant Rodney Rolland. Sloan emphasized the post’s commitment to helping veterans and posts affected by natural disasters, stating the unanimous support from
their Legion Family.
The NEF provides financial aid to Legionnaires, posts, and Sons of The American Legion affected by natural disasters, offering up to $3,000 for individuals and $10,000 for posts. This donation is timely given recent and upcoming destructive weather.
Post 355 received a certificate of appreciation and other honors from American Legion National Commander Daniel Seehafer. Rolland commended their generosity, highlighting their true representation of the Legion Family’s values.

Post 355 Commander Dwayne Sloan and post members accept a certificate of appreciation from National Adjutant Rodney Rolland at Atkins Saw Post 355 on June 3, 2024.

Greetings Hoosier Legionnaires.
I would like to thank the Department of Indiana for the opportunity to serve you as your commander. I am grateful and extremely honored.
My motto this year is from former NBA coach Phil Jackson who said, “The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.” Every team is made up of individuals, each with their unique talents, skills, and perspectives. It is that diversity that brings a multitude of ideas, creativity, and problem-solving abilities to the table. Each team member possesses their own strengths and expertise contributing to the team’s overall capabilities. It will be the Department of Indiana as a team that will keep the momentum going and continue to build our membership and make our department stronger.
I have selected Judy Pearson from the 6th District as my
membership chair for the 20242025 year. Judy has proven herself in membership repeatedly, finishing in first place at close of books this year. Judy and I sat down about a year ago and over dinner we talked about how to help districts succeed at recruiting new members. Stand by for an interesting approach to recruiting; I am not going to steal her thunder.
While recruiting is a great way to build our department back up, it will only work if we retain our current members. Recruiting a new member this year to have them not renew their membership next year defeats the purpose of recruiting them. Many times, the new recruits know nothing about the American Legion and after a year they still know nothing about the American Legion. There is a great “Welcome to The American Legion” video on YouTube created by our national organization. It is a straightforward way to introduce a new member to what our great organization stands for.
This year started out with a directive from the membership at the mid-winter emergency
convention for us to balance our budget, and we did just that. We presented a budget to the DEC in July that was balanced based on a projected membership, but with that comes change.
We must change the way we do things. My goal is to operate within that budget and try to maintain as much of our traditions as possible.
My slogan is “Moving Forward,” a lot of things are going to happen that you can’t necessarily control, but you can control what you do after it happens.
Keep your head up, keep moving forward, and stay positive. We can do anything we set our minds to as a team. I look forward to seeing you all out there at the district meetings, post meetings and post functions.
If you have an event you would like myself or one of my officers to attend please put in a request at indianalegion.org/commandervisit-request and I will do my best to be there or one of my Vice Commanders will represent me.
Thank you again for your support, God bless the American Legion, and God bless America.

Rob Burkhart Department Commander

Roger Clark Southern Vice Commander
Greeting fellow Legionnaires, With the 105th department convention in the rearview it is time to focus on the 2024-2025 membership year. As always, membership will be an important topic as we strive for new members but let us not forget about retaining our current members. Also important are our Legion

My fellow Legionnaires, I trust this finds you well and in good health. It has been an exciting first couple of months; just settling into this new role. The people that I have been fortunate to meet thus far have been very supportive and encouraging. Training has been wonderful, due in part because of great and informed instructors. As we look forward towards this Legion year our focus will continue to be on the “Be the One” campaign.
Taking care of our veterans and their families through our programs and community involvement gets our brand out into the public view.
programs. Let us make this another successful year supporting all programs. Working together with the rest of the Legion Family we can achieve great things. I look forward to attending your district meetings and visiting as many posts as possible this year.
I also look forward to attending the National Convention in New Orleans later this month where I will meet new Legionnaires from across the country, forging new friendships and learning what other departments are doing
I believe that the strength of our organization is our membership, so post commanders and adjutants, continue to do a good job in your endeavors. Retention is the key and asking fellow veterans you know to participate in activities at your post and utilizing the Buddy Check program is an important tool we can use to keep our membership strong. Another aspect to consider is our programs such as Oratorical and Flag Education. As our children return to school, we need to get the word out about the wonderful opportunities The American Legion has to offer.
While I am out visiting the districts and posts, I will be supporting the Department Commanders agenda. Since we all are a part of the membership team, we have been encouraged to
successfully to attract and retain members.
I want to thank the 10th District for trusting me with this important position. I will not let you down. I also want to thank all the districts in the south who gave me their support as well. Finally, my home post, Victory Post 70, and all my traveling partners for all they did to help while I sought this high office.
Lastly, I look forward to working closely with Commander Burkhart and his elected and appointed officers this year.

Hello Fellow Veterans,
A little something about myself, I am a Veteran of the United States Navy serving from 1978-1982 and a 34 year member of Angola Post 31, Past Department Commander Max Julian got me started on my path in the American Legion serving as Post Commander for the first

I hope everyone had a wonderful Department convention; we had some great awards to present to very deserving winners and was an overall great ending to Commander Oeth’s year. National convention is quickly approaching and Fall conference will be right behind it. We have received an email from the Indiana Alcohol Tobacco Commission I have added it below, and we will also send it out in the quarterly mailer. Please read it and share with your post leadership.

In 2010 I started my journey into the 4th District as Chaplain, then serving Historian, Public Relations, Finance, Membership, Adjutant, Vice Commander and then 4th District Commander in 2017-2018, I look forward to my next job as one of your Northern Vice Commanders and working closely with all the District Commanders in keeping the growth we have seen in the Department of Indiana.

Facility Alcohol Permits:
We continue to receive this duplicative question from a variety of American Legion chapters about whether they can utilize drink token/drinks for alcoholic beverages. We felt it would be helpful to contact your state organization so that you can uniformly communicate with your chapters about the subject.
If a drink token/chip does not have a cash value, it could easily lead to committing price discrimination. IC 7.1-5-10-12 makes it, “…unlawful for a permittee to sell, offer to sell, purchase or receive, an alcoholic beverage for anything other than cash”.
If a drink token/chip has an actual cash value, like a gift card,
will be discussing during my visits in each district, and we must keep up our momentum and make 20242025 an even better year. I look forward to working with the other Northern Vice Richie King Sr as we travel across the Northern part of the state and looking forward to meeting new people and making new friends, remember to work the programs of the American Legion and recruiting new members in all of our Legion Family.
that can be accepted. An example would be a $5 token/chip being sold for $5. Token/chips that change in price do not have a cash value.
We cannot offer business or legal advice, but use of a drink token/ chip could very easily result in price discrimination. For legal or business advice, you would need to seek the advice of an attorney. In the future, ATC may send something out on this topic. Clifton Morlan Department Historian
Calling all district and post historians: The new year is already in full swing, with Commander Rob Burkhart stepping into his leadership role following Past Department Commander Bob Oeth. Our newly installed eleven district commanders and post officers signal a new chapter for our organization.
As we look to the future while honoring our past, we must collectively build on the solid foundation laid by those who came before us. By drawing on their experiences and wisdom, we can continue to strengthen and expand our Legion family. The initiatives of our past department commanders
have left a legacy, and I am confident that this year will bring forth new initiatives that will similarly benefit our department.
As your newly appointed Department Historian, I am enthusiastic about documenting the exceptional efforts and achievements of our posts and districts across the state. Your support is crucial in this endeavor, as it is impossible for me to cover every district and post activity alone.
Therefore, I am calling on all posts and districts to share information, photographs, and write-ups about your events and activities involving the American Legion, Sons of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and the American Legion Riders. Your contributions are vital in chronicling the outstanding
work our department is doing to enhance the well-being of our community, state, and nation for the 2024-2025 membership year. By publicizing and highlighting the achievements of our Legion family at the department level, we can instill pride and joy among our members, posts, and districts, showcasing the remarkable initiatives happening statewide. This recognition might even inspire other posts to undertake even greater projects.
Please send your stories, pictures, or links to historian@ indianalegion.org. Together, we can ensure that our members, posts, district, and department receive the recognition they deserve for their exceptional contributions. Let us collaborate to celebrate and document the history we are making.

Interesting E-mail Responses from the Service Director
As the director of rehabilitation and services, I answer hundreds of emails monthly. Since many of them would benefit others, I have decided to replace my Hoosier Legionnaire column with copies of the more interesting emails. If necessary and when the occasion warrants, I may still provide a column. Until then, however, you may find copies of our emails even more interesting and informative. The following is such an e-mail: Question: As a county veterans service officer, I’m assisting a veteran who conducted parachute jumps in service but has recently been denied service connection for his back condition and disabilities involving his feet, ankles, knees, and hips. I believe all these conditions were caused by the parachute jumps, but VA decision seems to only focus on if these disabilities were caused by the veteran’s Toxic Exposure Risk Activity (TERA) in service. What can we do to help?
Answer: All the issues decided on the last exam included only musculoskeletal impairments that would be unusual for them to be associated with a TERA. It would not, however, be unusual for them to be associated with the veteran’s parachute jumps in service. Of course, the three elements of a successful claim for service connection are: an incident in service, a current medical condition, and a medical link.
VA has conceded that the veteran does have the claimed medical conditions and he did have the traumatic incidents in service (parachute jumps), but VA has not conceded the medical link.
Although no one can argue against it is very possible that parachute jumps could cause back and other musculoskeletal conditions, it is not simply presumed by VA that all who did parachute jumps in service can be service connected for back and other musculoskeletal conditions no matter how long after service they first developed.
I suggest the veteran attempt to find information for helping VA establish the medical link. Of course, the best evidence would be medical records showing he
has had continual back and other musculoskeletal problems ever since his service discharge with evidence of these conditions existing as soon after service as possible. If he can’t get medical records for establishing this continuity of symptomatology, he might want to obtain statements from others (lay statements) noting they have observed him having and/or complaining of back and musculoskeletal problems ever since his service discharge. He could then use that information as new and relevant evidence for filing a supplemental claim.
When VA makes rating decisions, they are required to consider all theories of service connection even if they were not claimed by the veteran. Although the rating decision talks a lot about TERA, it did also reference VA’s belief that the condition neither occurred in nor was caused by service.
If the veteran could obtain a medical statement explaining why the doctor believes the veteran’s back and other musculoskeletal conditions are related to the vet’s parachute jumps in service, he could also use that statement as “new and relevant evidence” for filing a supplemental claim.

Judy Pearson Membership Chair
First of all, I want to thank Commander Burkhart for having faith in me for appointing me to be your Membership Chair for 2024-2025. I look forward to working with you if this is your first year, or you have been part of our Legion family for nearly your entire life. Our Legion Family is at a tipping point that requires all of us to contribute to creating membership.
Each member of The American Legion is bound by their individual sense of duty to ensure our overall success. You and I can no longer allow others to carry the responsibility of recruiting new members or maintaining existing members.
So, I ask you, “Let’s Fight from our hearts for our fellow Veterans!” Are you ready to share your story? Why you are a member of the American Legion? Are you ready to reach out to another veteran and build a new, greater American Legion… a place where your family is welcome, and all veterans feel safe? Are you ready to let the doors to another Post close and
let our message of Americanism, Children and Youth, Veterans Rehabilitation and National Defense die?
I am imploring all of you to invite up to five new members over the next 12 months. That is my challenge to you. Make a difference, know your “why” and be willing to share from your heart. I love our American Legion and I feel safe among our brothers and sisters. Our programs are important to my family and critical for the future of our country.
You can go to indianalegion. org/forms-files and under Membership Forms and Schedules find my 2024-2025 Awards Manual. There you will find, for example:
An award for the district this year that has the highest percentage retention will receive an Edmund A. Ball (1923-24 PDC) Retention Plaque.
A drawing for any post that meets the target percentages on the first of each month will be entered into a drawing at fall conference/convention ($270 qty 1), Mid-Winter ($270 qty 2), Spring ($270 qty 3,) and Convention ($270 qty 4).
All members that recruit five Legion new members or three
Legion new members with combination of two new SAL/AUX new members will earn a 5X buddy recruiter challenge coin.
Members that earn a 5X buddy recruiter challenge coin by 2025 mid-winter conference, will be entered in a drawing for five members to be included in a trip to the Lincoln Pilgrimage. Must be first time pilgramigee attendee to win.
One project I am trying to get off the ground for each quarter is to start a new post at a university. I am looking for two or more staff members belonging to a university that would be willing to be charter members of a new post located on or near the campus of the university. If you are such a person, please email me at jpearson@ indianalegion.org
Thank you, and I look forward to meeting and speaking with as many of you as possible as I travel the many districts and posts of Indiana thorough out the remainder of 2024 and into 2025. Are you ready to make a difference in your communities, state and nation? I am ready to say i am always fighting from the heart for our fellow veterans! Please join me!

Norris Keirn Department Chaplain
I am reading and hearing about a greater emphasis on caring in the Legion family. Caring about new members and what we have to offer them is essential in recruitment. Welcoming new and potential members is essential. Following up on contact, introducing them to comrades and getting them involved is essential to retention. New members must know that there is an open path to leadership rather than a long term hovering until someone has passed on to the Great Commander of the Universe, or is too impaired to continue.
I was thrilled to see the growing number of female comrades at our new officer’s training. I have found women who strive for leadership to be very capable and
diligent, often surpassing their predecessors. When my daughter graduated from Marine Corps boot camp, I noticed that she went through the same obstacle course that I had years before and qualified on the same rifle range earning the same title as her father and older brother. When we see these comrades in our top leadership, we will know that the department is open to all.
We are a service organization and our attitude must be about caring for others. Recently, I was appalled when a leader personally took the credit, rather than honor all who worked hard to achieve the accomplishment. I do not feel that self-promotion or self-acclaim has a place in the Legion. Years ago, I had the extreme honor of serving as National Chaplain. But before I was appointed to this position, I was thoroughly examined in quite an intimidating way. I was told upon passing
the exam with a finger pointed at my face, “The only reason you have this job, is because you did not seek it!” I was carried to that privileged position by many comrades in the department. This is a very humbling experience. Our “Be the One” campaign now on each membership card, email, text, and printing is a great emphasis on lifting up members not membership. If we do not care about our members they will drift out and fall away. If we do not promote people outside the inner circle they will find a place to serve that will. I believe we are making some great strides for the future. We are here to serve and to care! Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Kimberly Pulsifer 2nd District Commander
Greetings from the 2nd District.
As I step into the role of 2nd District Commander, I am both honored and excited to serve our esteemed members and continue the remarkable work that defines our district. I am grateful for the trust you have placed in me and am eager to contribute to our collective mission. I want to acknowledge the exceptional leadership and accomplishments of those who have served before me. Their dedication has set a high standard, and it is my goal to build upon their successes while bringing fresh perspectives and energy to our district.
Coming fresh out of Department Convention it is my honor to say welcome to the 2024-2025 membership year. Looking forward to this year we will have our challenges, but if we all work together as one family it will be a great year.
My vision for our team is centered around strengthening
our community engagement, expanding our outreach programs, and ensuring that the needs of our veterans and their families remain a top priority. We have a strong foundation, but there is always room for growth and innovation. I am committed to working closely with each of you to explore new ideas and enhance our initiatives.
Looking at the programs our organization has to offer, if each post could concentrate on one or two programs and does them well, every program will be a success this year.
As we embark on this journey together, I encourage open communication and collaboration. Please feel free to reach out with your thoughts, suggestions, or concerns. Your feedback is invaluable, and I am here to listen and support you in any way I can.
In the coming months, we will be organizing various trainings to advance our vice commanders abilities to trouble shoot issues. I look forward to engaging with you and witnessing the positive impact we can achieve as a united district.
Posts within the 2nd District, be watching for contact from

district vice commanders, they will be reaching out and contacting post commanders and adjutants. The vice commanders are your first level of communication for questions and guidance. District

Hello to all the American Legion Family. My name is Jesse R. Booker, and I am extremely humbled and honored to serve as the next 4th District Commander in our great state of Indiana. I served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War Era as a Military Policeman with the 3rd Infantry Division Europe. My father also was an Army veteran and served in the Infantry division during WWII. Currently, I am a 36-year continuous member of American Legion Post 148 in Fort Wayne, holding several offices including commander for 10 consecutive years. I grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana with eight brothers and sisters. After graduating high school, I attended the Universities of Harding, Maryland, Indiana, and received a MSBA at St. Francis. I am married to Annie, and we have two children (Jesse Jr. and Adrienne). I am retired from Slater Steels Corporation as Accounting Manager and Dana Incorporated as group leader after a combined
total of 54 years of service. I became a district officer in 2015-2016 as Membership Chairman under Past Commander Jay Hilliard. That particular year, the 4th District was first in the state for membership, a task we are hoping to duplicate in 20242025. I’ve held numerous positions in 4th District, and I sincerely thank the District Advisory Committee and past district commanders for having the faith and trust in me to be the proud Commander of the 4th District.
The month of July was full of excitement and extremely rewarding. First, I attended Department Convention in Indianapolis, whereby the 4th District was well represented. Our district finished third place in state for membership, receiving numerous awards for posts and individuals achieving: 100%105% of membership; recruiting new members; Post 47 as third largest in the state; Post 148 sponsoring Adam Colone the state’s Disable Veteran Outreach Program Specialist for State and National recognition; my being on stage taking the oath of district commander. Secondly, I attended
the National Membership Workshop in Indianapolis, July 2627. The general session was very informational, and the breakout workshops were amazing. I learned a lot and met lots of new people from all the American Legion departments.
This fiscal year, our work will be challenging in the 4th District. Our membership goals for the 4th District are the second highest in the state. Already, we are starting in the opposite direction. We need to change immediately! It all borders on relationships as was stressed in the General Session at the National Membership Workshops: with the Veterans, the American Legion; the communities; Buddy Checks; and the incorporation of the three “C’s” (Competence, Character, and Commitment) that National Commander Seehafer expressed at the 2023 National Convention during the membership session in Charlotte. As we all know, dues have increased. We need to focus on lifetime memberships (three years, ten years, and PUFL). Let’s all work together on membership and programs and we will have a very exciting year.

Michelle Amick 5th District Commander
Greetings from the Mighty Fifth! I would like to thank the 5th District for entrusting me to serve as your 2024-2025 District Commander. It is an honor to serve, and I very proudly call Roanoke Post 160 my home for all 18 years as a Legionnaire and am thankful for their continuous support as well. This year is sure to be a great one for us with Department Commander Rob Burkhart from our district leading the way for the state of Indiana. Over the next few months myself, membership chair Andy Henderson and my vice commanders will be out visiting your posts. We look forward to

The 6th District sends a warm welcome to all Hoosier Legionnaires. We just got out of the last session of the 2024 National Membership Workshop. This workshop covers all areas of membership, from how to conduct a buddy check, how to work with MyLegion, to the new IT apps that should be out this year to help recruit new members. This workshop is great, and I always learn something new each year I attend.
The 105th Department of Indiana State Convention was held July 1114. Rob Burkhart of Alexandria, was elected Commander of the over 60,000 member Indiana American Legion by acclimation in the
meeting everyone, sharing useful and important information and educating individuals throughout the district on membership and programs. Please don't hesitate to reach out to a district officer for any assistance and questions.
Legion programs and post education will be at the forefront of our efforts this year within the district. We plan to host training sessions at local posts on these topics throughout the year and look forward to sharing our knowledge with you. I urge each post to participate and bring awareness to at least one additional program than you did in the previous year. These programs are vital to our organization. For more information on these programs, visit indianalegion.org.
I encourage our posts to continue the momentum we have established in the 2024 membership year and make those connections with veterans so our organization can continue to grow, and our voices be heard. Members that recruit five new legionnaires or three new legionnaires with a combination of two new SAL/ AUX members will earn a recruiter challenge coin this year. The district has a tent available for any events in your community to assist in support your recruiting efforts. Please reach out to a district officer to reserve the tent. Let's make it a great membership year!
I hope to see you all at 5th District meetings. Thank you and I am looking forward to a great 2024-2025 year!
closing session of the 105th annual Department Convention on July 13. I was installed as one of the new District Commanders and looking at the new officers we will have a great year in Indiana.
On Sunday July 21, at the Lebanon American Legion Post 113 the new 6th District Auxiliary officers were installed. The American Legion 6th District Officers were installed after the Auxiliary. After the installation we said our farewell to Judy Pearson as our most recent past commander. Then we welcomed her to her new appointment as the Department of Indiana Membership Chair. The 6th District has another state officer serving as a Southern Vice Commander, John Klepfer. We look forward to the 20242025 membership year. The 6th District ended the 2023-2024 membership year in first place, and
we will continue to work this year to be in first place again. Judy, the Membership Chair, has inspired us to get five new members to receive a buddy recruiter coin. Her last hurrah was to have karaoke, after the commander party Saturday night out in the courtyard. This went over great as we had all districts participate.
I would like to invite you to one of our Department of Indiana Conferences or the Convention. The mid-winter conference is held in January and is a lot of training. Gaming and Excise is here to teach us how to deal with gaming and the bar side and not get in trouble. We have Service Officer training for everyone to learn how to help veterans in need. To learn more, you may contact me or any of the 6th District officers or members.
Thank you for letting me serve as your 6th District Commander.
Tim McMahon 6th District Commander

Jesse Brown 7th District Commander
Greetings, Fighting Seventh. I would like to introduce myself. I am this year’s new Fighting 7th District Commander Jesse Brown from Greenwood Legion Post 252. What a great department convention we had and now it is time to keep the momentum up and keep renewing and
recruiting new members. I hope that we can have a great 20242025 year just like we did last year. I want to thank Past District Commander Dale McDonald for all his great work and look forward to working with him and all my district officers, new and old, this year as we strive in keeping the Fighting 7th in a forward moving direction. I cannot wait to get out and visit the posts in District 7 this coming year.
I’m looking forward to going to the National Convention in New Orleans this year and bringing back great ideas to share with the posts and the district. This year, with the increase in our dues, we must really push our programs and recruit new membership, so we are able to make this year a great year for all. I look forward to meeting you at some point this year as I get around visiting the district. Let’s keep moving forward.

Greetings from the 9th District and our American Legion Family. As I have entered my first year as 9th District Commander, I have set goals for myself and the district. My priority is to promote “Be The One.” As most of us know there is a veteran that takes their life daily in our country, and one is too many in my book. So, we need to continue to work on this problem daily. My second priority is membership which should be everyone’s to increase membership throughout the State of Indiana. As a department we came in 18th in the Nation this past year there is no reason we can’t be number 1 this year and show the nation that Indiana is the strongest; after all, National Headquarters is in Indiana. As most of you know our new Department Membership Chair Judy Pearson has already hit the floor running and with all the districts helping her, I think we can
make Indiana proud.
I am proud to say that the 9th District had a good representation at the Department Convention this year with Nominees in Firefighter, EMT, Law Officer, Boy Scouts, Military, Elementary Educator, Middle School Educator and High School Educator of the year. With top honors going to Military active duty of the year, Elementary Educator and Middle School Educator of the year awards.
Also, the A.L.R announced their rider of the year, Mary Lou Milton from Cecil C. Martin Post 250, is also out of the 9th District. They also announced Noah O’Bannion Post 59 in Rising Sun as Chapter of the Year, which is also in the 9th District.
I would like to thank our past 9th District Commander Lonny Barnett for all he has done for the district over the last two years and the mentorship he has given me over that period. He has done a tremendous job with Oratorical where I had the opportunity to attend at the zone level. Also, with Boys State where I had the
opportunity to go to the closing ceremony with Department Finance Officer Milton Howard where it was announced that 9th District had 100% participation. This past week, I had the opportunity to attend the 61st National Membership Training in Indianapolis. It was a wonderful experience and would recommend it to anyone. I met a lot of great people from all over the country and got to spend time with our new Department Commander Rob Burkhart, Membership Chair Judy Pearson and other District Commanders.
In closing I would like to thank all the posts and the heads of the 9th District for believing in me and putting me into this position. I know that with all the help I have behind me from post commanders, past district and department commanders and even a past national vice commander our district will grow and become one of the best in the State.
Thank you for all you do for the American Legion Family.
Kevin Thomasson 9th District Commander
District Commander Letters

Chris Helms 10th District Commander
Greetings to all the 10th District Legion Family. I would personally like to thank every one of you for your confidence and trust in electing me as your 10th District Commander for 2024-2025.
As we prepare for the 2025 membership year, there is new life to push growth in the Department of Indiana. The goals this year are very attainable if we all work together as a team. Please reach out if you have ideas or even want

Greetings to my fellow Legionnaires from the geographic center of the Department!
I want to thank my 11th District members for the confidence they have placed in me to serve as their commander as we tackle the large job ahead of us to reverse the downward membership trend in most posts. My objective is to do this by showing our members and prospective members the value of pursuing American Legion programs in each of our communities. We will have fun doing this together.
District 11 got off to a favorable start achieving 39% of our membership goal prior to the August 1 deadline. Congratulations to the 2nd, 6th, 7th, and 10th Districts for also exceeding the 30% goal. Now, let’s get to the October 1, 60% goal! We can do this by making “renewal reminder
to discuss strategies. Membership will always be the main goal, but our programs stand as a testament to growth. If we don’t instill programs into our posts and communities, we will struggle long term. In the upcoming months, I will be visiting several posts to inform them about what is going on and learn what is going on in your community and learn from you. Each post/member has a story to tell to help the incoming generation to start a new story or tradition.
This year we need to focus on increasing participation in our youth programs more so than ever.
My program for the quarter is Flag Education. Flag education is for 4th grade students. Schools need to be contacted to get permission to hand out the literature and give the tests. The booklets will need to be ordered before Fall conference so the tests can be picked up at the conference. Testing will conduct in November with the Department awarding two scholarships.
I’m excited and look forward to having a great year and working with all of you and to grow the American Legion Family. I hope to see you all soon as I travel the post of the 10th District.
calls” this month. Membership Chair Paul Norton is contacting each post with programs to provide direct membership assistance.
The “Be The One” program remains a Legion priority. In addition to talking about the critical importance of ending veteran suicide, we need to equip Legionnaires and community members to act. The American Legion has joined forces with Columbia University to develop training for those who want to learn more about interacting and responding with veterans who may be in crisis. This year we will create training opportunities for the Columbia Protocol. You do not need to be a healthcare professional to prevent suicide. After the training, participants will be able to:
• Use the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale to determine at-risk individuals.
• Identify risk factors and warning signs
• Outline the types of suicidal
ideation and four behaviors that indicate imminent risk.
• Communicate effectively with an individual who may be at risk of hurting themselves.
Dates and times for individual training will be listed at legion. org/betheone/training.
To get immediate assistance for a veteran call the Veterans Crisis Line by dialing 988 and pressing 1.
Let’s help save lives.
Involvement in our community is another opportunity that we have again as schools return to session. The first ones are Flag Education and Americanism & Government testing programs. We need to reach out to schools, now, to get involved with them again. We also need to publicize the Oratorical Contest. The first district competition begins in January and participants need to refine their presentations well before then. I invite you to contact me if you have any questions about getting started.
Let’s have some fun this year!
Dan Cunningham 11th District Commander
Legion Family Letters

Roxy Stoner Auxiliary President
What an honor it is to be your American Legion Auxiliary President for the 2024-2025 year. I am looking forward to working alongside American Legion Commander Rob Burkhart and Sons of the American Legion Detachment Commander Andy Byers this year.
Our Auxiliary Slogan this year is “Ringing Bells for Our Veterans.” We ring bells to bring people together for various reasons, this year we are ringing bells to let our veterans know we are here for them no matter the circumstances or the need.
One of my Presidents projects this year is the Otis R. Bowen Center for Human Services, known as The Vets House, located in Indianapolis. It offers a safe, comfortable homelike environment for veterans receiving extended outpatient medical care and for family members of hospitalized veteran patients. If it were located closer to the hospital it would be called a Fisher House.
My other project is the Indiana Veterans Home (IVH) in West Lafayette. A home for honorably discharged veterans, their spouses and Gold Star Parents. I met with them recently, they have several wants and needs, and we will be meeting again soon, and I will then announce what my
project will be for the coming year.
Our Membership Chairman, Sherri McGee has some good ideas, incentives and rewards this year. She has been working on plans for the year for us to all work together with our current members and recruit new members.
Let us all spread the word of who we are, what we do and why we belong to the greatest and oldest patriotic membership organization in the USA.
Thank you to all our veterans and those currently serving. It is an honor to be a part of the American Legion Family as your Department President for the 2024-2025 year.
