Part 1 THE STORYBOARD

Part 1 THE STORYBOARD

How to use this diary This diary is part of a series of creative diaries that develops storytelling in 3 to 6 year olds using the story, language and characters from The Vegetable Plot Season 1 CD. This diary features Aspara Gus, or “Gus”, the fearless leader of The Vegetable Plot who accompanies us through this storytelling adventure! The goal of this diary is to give your child the basic structure and tools to develop his/ her own narrative thinking, an extremely important skill to develop as the foundation for expressing what we know about ourselves and other people. Storytelling has been around for thousands of years yet almost all plots follow a similar structure with a beginning, middle and an end. Our story has been divided into 6 parts or frames represented by 6 symbols found on the top right corner of every activity page. These symbols serve as a visual guide to help your child build the story using the storyboard at the end of this diary. Visit www.HooplaEducation.com/myveggiediary to watch Gus tell the story of what happened on that starry night! The use of two different fonts identifies the information that is meant for you, standard font, and for your child, cursive. By the end of this diary, your child will bring his/her “Little Green Heads” finger puppets to life. The tutorial video can also be found on: www.HooplaEducation.com/myveggiediary Pedagogy You will also notice that there are 5 key logos at the start of each activity. These represent the 5 disciplines found in S.T.E.A.M. education: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math indicating the multidisciplinary aspect of this storytelling project.

You are the hero or “protagonist” of your story. Draw a picture or stick a photo of yourself in a garden!

The setting of a story is where it takes place.

Complete our setting, a vegetable plot, by adding your favourite vegetables from A to C and colouring it in.

Add the vegetable names below

The main character (protagonist) of our story is Aspara Gus, also known as Gus. He is a green asparagus rich in vitamins B6 and C. Gus is a fearless vegetable leader campaigning for healthier diets!

Draw a full picture of how you imagine Gus below

Full Name: Asparagus Officinalis

Age: 3 years old

Expressive eyes

A deep and commanding voice Tall and skinny

Likes: Roots music, fresh ideas and vegetable jokes Dislikes: Plastic bags, fake food and rotten people

Music and sounds can help tell a story without using words.

In the middle of the night With a shuffling sound In the pale moonlight We come up from the ground

Write down the night sounds you hear in “The Vegetable Plot” theme song on your drawing. How do they make you feel?

One night under the soil Gus hears music playing.

One night under the soil We heard music playing We poked our heads up to try and find the source

Help Gus find the source of music by making a musical pathway towards the instrument that accompanies Gus’ story of what happened one night under the soil.

It was aliens from a place called Wambamboobaloo In a spaceship on a transgalactic course

Complete the aliens from Wambamboobaloo, using vegetable shapes. Don’t forget to draw their laserbeans turning the veggies into super beings!

Send your aliens back to space with a Balloon Rocket! In this experiment, we will use the force from air to make our spaceship (balloon) move along a string. As the balloon deflates the air flowing out pushes the balloon along the string in the opposite direction. This is called “jet propulsion”.

Materials Set-up & Materials: » Long, oblong black balloons (experiment with different shaped balloons) » Paper clips » Black permanent marker (Sharpie) » Tape » String » 2 chairs

Instructions • Cut a length of string approx. 3-5 meters long.

• Tape the balloon to the straw in several places (3-4).

• Thread the string through a straw and secure one end to a chair, tying the other end to another chair.

• Move the balloon(s) to the start of the string with the neck facing towards you.

• Inflate a long, oblong balloon and hold the neck closed with a paperclip.

• Remove the paperclip and watch what happens!

• Draw the images of the aliens on the inflated balloon with the marker.

Try This! - What path would the balloon take if it were not attached to the string? - If you used a shorter rod, approximately 1 meter in length, what would happen to the balloon after it left the end of the rod? - What would happen if you used different shaped balloons?

The vegetables have been turned into super beings in possession of the human voice. They have returned to earth as heroes on a mission of love and peas.

How do you feel when kids eat vegetables, doesn’t the thought of getting eaten frighten you?

Finish Gus’ special message from his latest interview with emojis, to universally transmit his message to all your friends!

Vegetables love to be eaten. The more kids eat us, the more they will want to plant us. Our goal is for children to love us so they will keep growing us their whole lives and even teach their own children to grow us. That way we can live on forever.

Now it’s your turn to bring these seedlings to life with your super powers. Turn your fingers into “Little Green Heads” and make your story come alive!

fig. 3

Materials » 3 shades of green “EVA foam” (or green felt from light to dark green) » Fine-tip permanent pen (or very fine paint brush and acrylic paint) » Glue gun and hot glue, alternatively, white all-purpose craft and wood glue » Scissors » Sewing needle and thread » Pencil and paper All gluing steps using a hot glue-gun must be done by an adult. » Time: 30mins for 4 finger puppets The instructions in green can be done by children 4 years and above.

Instructions For each finger puppet you will need: • one fig.1 in “eva foam” • one fig.2 in green felt • three fig.3 for the leaves in green felt You can choose to make the leaves in different shades of green or all the same. • Trace the finger puppet shape templates onto a piece of paper and cut them out. Now draw the cut-out shapes onto the eva foam. • Pin the paper pattern onto the fabric and cut around it. • Use the fine tip permanent pen to draw the eyes, eyebrows and mouth of the face. You could paint the mouth green if you prefer. (Drawing A)

• When your glue gun is hot, glue the strips of the puppet’s body together, overlapping them in order to make a ring that comfortably fits over your child’s finger. (Drawing B)

Now fold the strip downwards and glue over to join the ring of the puppet’s body. (Drawing C-b)

C-b B

• Once dry, take the strip of felt from fig. 2 and put a small amount of glue on one end. Stick it to the back of the puppet’s face in an upward direction. (Drawing C-a)

• Take each felt leaf and fold it in half, lengthwise. Sew a small, slightly crescent shaped seam along the fold. Then open the leaf and stretch the felt into shape. (Drawing D)

D • Glue the upper leaf into place first and then the other two leaves on each side. (Drawing E)

Let’s place our seedlings in their plot of land, their Vegetable Plot Puppet Box Age Range » 3yrs+ Materials » A large shoe box » Brown Felt » Pale brown colored “EVA foam” or cartridge paper (optional) » Some sackcloth or straw or similar for decoration (optional) » Wooden skewers (optional)

» Masking tape » Paint and brushes (optional) » Hot glue and glue gun (or white all purpose craft and wood glue) » Scissors » Marker pen and ruler

Instructions • Mark the holes for the hands with a large plastic mug placed on the edge of the box and mark a little over half the diameter of the mug in 2 places equally separated along one side of the base of the box. Repeat this on the base of the box using less than half of the diameter of the cup. (Drawing A)

A

• Reinforce the edges of the holes with masking tape. This will protect your child’s hands from being scratched by the cardboard.

• Mark and cut a rectangular hole out of the lid of the box about 1.5cm from the edge all around. • Cut out a rectangle of brown felt using the lid of the box to get the right shape and size so that it completely covers the lid of the box.

• Cut out the holes carefully. • Turn the box upside down. Now mark the half-way point on each side of the opening of the box and make a small hole, just big enough for the skewer to go through. Cut the skewers to length and glue into the holes forming a cross over the top of the box. One skewer will be slightly higher than the other. (Drawing B)

• Make 6-8 small cuts in crosses at regular intervals in the felt for the finger puppets to poke through. Glue this on top of the outside of the lid. (Drawing C)

C

B

• Now you can decorate the box as desired. Add little pieces of sacking fabric or straw around the top of the lid to look like dry grass and then cut pieces of EVA foam into strips and glue them all around the box with a slight overlap. Remember to leave the holes for the hands at the back.

Color and cut out these vegetables and props and add them to your Vegetable Plot Box to complete your set

Our brains think in pictures. The Storyboard allows children to organize images into a sequence so children can pre-visualize the story. Visit www.HooplaEducation.com/myveggiediary to watch a video of our story in action.
