ou created a chore chart for your child, but he resists completing them. You have reviewed the chore chart with your child and the chores are reasonable, given his current schedule. It may seem easier to just finish the chores yourself than to have to remind your child to complete them. However, research has shown that requiring your child to do chores is not just giving them busy work and can help them achieve academic success and build self-esteem. Performing daily household chores provides an excellent opportunity for kids to develop executive function skills.

R Remember the sequence of instructions for

Executive function is the essential management skills of the brain such as planning, the ability to stay focused, remembering the steps of a process and resisting distractions and following through on a task until completion. Executive function is just like muscles, you have to exercise it to build and strengthen it.

R Completion and feeling of self-confidence –

Start assigning a few age-appropriate chores at an early age. You need to teach each step of a chore at first but resist the urge to just do the chore yourself because it would be faster. Start out by making the chore a team effort, so that you can teach him the steps as you go. For example, ask your child to help you pick up toys and show him the proper place for the toys he cleans up. The chores can be simple, like sweeping the floor and helping to put away laundry but they are essential to keeping the household running and are not just useless ‘busy work.’ Even kids that have a full calendar of activities should be able to finish a few chores each day and exercise the essential life skills involved in executive function.

Here is an example of how a simple chore engages the use of executive function: R Organize and plan - When should I get started on this chore? The table has to be clean before I can go and play after lunch, so I better go ahead and get it done.

the task and adjust when needed – I have to first get all the dishes off the table and then go and get the rag to wipe it down. Then I start at one side and move towards the other side. If there are still dirty spots, I need to go back and take care of those.

R Resist distractions - It would be much more fun to just go ahead and play, but I am going to stick with the task as planned and get this done.

I made a difference and helped keep the house clean. I did this, so I know I can do other, more difficult tasks also.

When your child consistently exercises his executive function skills, you may notice he is better at completing his homework without being reminded and managing his time. He plans ahead for the time for the chores assigned to him and gets them completed. When he uses executive function to successfully master simple chores, your child will approach learning new tasks with confidence and seek opportunities to learn about more complex tasks such as cooking.

If at first your child has trouble getting started on his chore checklist: R Make sure the chore list is specific enough.

R Give purpose to the tasks. Talk to your child about how everyone in the family needs to work together and how much he is helping the family when he does the chores.

R Make a chore into a fun game and work on it together.

R Remove distractions during chore time.

Highlight On At Clement Arts, we believe the arts can be a means of mercy. Our mission is to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable, foster, and adoptive families through gospelcentered support and creative experiences. One of the most beautiful expressions of that mission is The Clement Arts Studio—a place where anyone in the community can learn, grow, and create with purpose.

Each year, more than 500 students participate in our Studio classes in fine art, dance, cooking, martial arts, and music.

About 95% of our students are members of the wider community who simply love the excellence, encouragement, and creativity they find here. The remaining students are children currently in foster care—they attend classes tuition-free thanks to the generosity of our supporters.

The Studio is open to everyone, and classes are offered for a fee. We also provide tuition assistance for families who need help covering the cost, ensuring that all children can participate regardless of their circumstances.

Supporting the arts at Clement Arts goes far beyond the classroom. Events like our upcoming family-friendly illusionist show—featuring internationally recognized performers who have appeared on the TEDx stage—allow us to serve children before, during, and after foster care.

The show includes a pre-show meet & greet and a hands-on workshop where students can learn basic illusions. (See the ad in this issue for more details!) Attending events like this is a fun and meaningful way to support the families we serve.

For many, the Studio is the first step into deeper involvement with Clement Arts. Whether it’s enrolling a child, volunteering at an event, joining a support team for a foster family, or contributing toward tuition for a child in care, the Studio creates meaningful pathways for connection.

Outdoor Play

In the winter months, the reduced number of hours of daylight and chilly temperatures can make it more difficult to ensure kids get at least an hour to play outside each day. However, there are multiple ways in which kids benefit from playing outdoors in the winter that make it worth putting aside time for play and bundling everyone up for an outdoor adventure.

Playtime outdoors in the winter keeps kids healthy Spending time outdoors provides an opportunity for everyone in the family to get some fresh air and provides a break from the recycled, heated air indoors. The recycled air indoors can contain germs and allergens like dust and pet dander. Spending time outdoors reduces the amount of time kids are exposed to the germs and allergens in the air indoors, actually making it less likely they will get sick or have allergy trouble.

Outdoor play provides an opportunity for kids to exercise large muscle groups while they play games and explore the outdoors. Your child continues to grow during the winter months and daily exercise helps support her muscle development and gives her a chance to practice her motor skills. Also, research studies suggest that exercise can help give a boost to the immune system, which may help the body fight germs.

Spending time playing outdoors ensures your child is exposed to sunlight. Getting enough exposure to sunlight during the day helps regulate your child’s sleep pattern. Also, research studies

may have found a link between exposure to sunlight and mood.

Sunlight may stimulate the brain to release a hormone called serotonin. Researchers suggest that low serotonin levels may be associated with an increased risk of depression.

Winter outdoor play encourages kids to explore and use their imagination Playing outdoors encourages kids to take a break from screen time and explore their surroundings. Take your kids on a nature walk and help them compare the way the plants and wildlife look in the winter versus the way they looked during summer.

Bring along some binoculars and use a picture guide of birds found in your area to help identify the birds your kids see.

Even if ice and snow are a rarity where you live, your family can still have some winter fun. When the overnight temperatures drop below freezing, create ‘ice jewels’ by filling ice trays with water, adding food coloring and leaving them outside overnight. On the days when it does snow, after ensuring kids are dressed for the weather, give them plenty of time outdoors to enjoy the transformed winter landscape with all its new opportunities for imaginative play.

Dressing The Part

As long as kids are bundled properly, stay dry and occasionally go inside to warm up, outdoor play in the winter can be extremely beneficial.

Dress your kids in layers to keep them warm. The layers help prevent the loss of body heat. Also, layers make it easy to adjust for outdoor temperatures rising as the day goes on or your child becoming warm from exercising.  Select a base layer made of a wicking material, not cotton.  The next layer should be made of an insulating material like wool or fleece.  The outer layer should be a waterproof jacket that will help protect your child from wind and repel moisture.  A hat, gloves and scarf protect skin from the cold winter air and help keep your child warm.  Keep feet warm with heavy socks made from a non-cotton material.

A

s your child moves through different developmental stages, her mind continues the quest to process and understand new experiences and the world around her. It is normal for these new experiences to often trigger feelings of worry and fear. Here is an overview of what commonly causes worry at each developmental stage and what you can do to help your child confront and cope with worries.

AGES 3 - 5 Your child is learning about the world around her. She does not fully understand it yet and therefore her imagination and creativity are free to explore all sorts of possibilities. She may worry that a monster is in her closet at night or be terrified if she sees a small bug. It is a time of big ‘firsts,’ such as the first day of preschool, the first dance lesson, being away from home or trying something new.

What you can do: Talk to your preschooler about her feelings so you can understand what may be causing the worry or fear. Validate your child’s feelings and help her find a way to ease the fear. You could say, ‘It sounds like you are worried there is a monster in the closet. Let’s talk about it.’ Reassure her that you are there to keep her safe. You could perform an inspection of the closet with the flashlight together to show her there is nothing in there. Spark a discussion about using bravery to confront a fear by reading a book about courage together.

When it comes to experiencing a ‘first,’ help your child slowly ease into the new experience. For example, make multiple visits to her new preschool before her first day to help her become familiar with her new surroundings and new routine.

fears and worries. Making friends and feeling accepted is very important to kids this age. They may worry about making a mistake and their friends finding out about it. Fear of monsters and of the dark may have faded but during this stage a child may still have a fear of insects or animals.

What you can do: If your child seems worried about school, talk with her about her worry or fear. Also talk with your child’s teacher to see if you can find out what may be causing your child to worry. The teacher may be able to provide insight into any social difficulties your child is having. Setting a daily routine for your child can give a comforting feeling of predictability to each day. Teach your child coping techniques to help her calm herself when she feels worried during the day, such as breathing exercises. Remind her that you learn by practicing and should not let fear of making a mistake keep you from trying something new.

AGES 9 - 11 The ability for critical thinking has developed even further. A child this age has started to analyze situations and come up with numerous possibilities about what will happen. She may worry about what everybody thinks of her and about changes coming in the future.

What you can do: Support your child by listening to her concerns. If her worries are keeping her from social situations, help her start to face her fears and encourage her to take steps towards trying new social situations.

If the steps you take to help your child cope with worries do not seem to help and they are interfering with her daily life, consult her pediatrician.

HOO’s HEALTHY Orbital cellulitis is a severe bacterial infection of the skin, fat and muscle tissues behind the eye, inside the eye socket.

The eye itself is not infected but it can damage the nerves and blood vessels around the eye, potentially leading to long term damage and vision loss if treatment is not sought urgently.

Additional serious complications, such as an infection of the brain or an infection of the blood stream throughout the body (sepsis), can occur when orbital cellulitis affects the blood vessels around the eye and then spreads.

What are the symptoms and what causes orbital cellulitis?

Orbital cellulitis causes pain, swelling and discoloration in the area around the eye that can extend from the eyebrow to the cheekbone. Someone with orbital cellulitis may also have difficulty moving the affected eye, have impaired vision and also may have a fever. Orbital cellulitis is most common in children under the age of seven, and the most common cause is a bacterial infection of the sinus closest to the eye socket, called the ethmoid sinus. Orbital cellulitis may also be caused by other types of infections, such as: tooth or oral infections,

W h a t is : ORBITAL CELLULITIS ear infections, infection of the tear duct, infections of the eyelids, or infections of the flesh of the face (necrotizing fasciitis). Trauma to the eye or to the area around the eye may also cause orbital cellulitis.

How is orbital cellulitis diagnosed and treated?

Orbital cellulitis symptoms can start suddenly, and the infection may then worsen rapidly. If your child has symptoms of orbital cellulitis, immediately seek emergency medical care for your child.

A physical examination, information on symptoms and medical history and imaging tests such as a CT scan or MRI are used by the doctor to determine if a patient has orbital cellulitis. Let the doctor know if your child has recently experienced a recent eye trauma.

Treatment for orbital cellulitis involves IV antibiotics. This treatment requires hospitalization. When the symptoms start to improve, which usually happens after a few days of treatment, the patient is sent home to take oral antibiotics for a few weeks.

this breakfast casserole is such a perfect way to use up all types of bread you may have and that you can customize the fruits you add according to the season or personal preferences.

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and grease an 8×8-inch baking pan (metal works best here) with nonstick spray or butter. Add the eggs, milk or cream, vanilla, and cinnamon to a bowl. Whisk to combine thoroughly. Add the bread to the pan. Pour the egg mixture over the bread and stir very well to coat the bread. You want it to all look very moist. Add the fruit to the top of the bread, pressing down a little. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake for another 20 minutes. Serve warm with maple syrup, yogurt, whipped cream, or other desired toppings. Store leftovers wrapped in foil or transfer to an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days. Warm to serve. Serve warm topped with maple syrup, yogurt, or whipped cream.

didn’t understand how much children study us, truly study us, until the day my niece watched me snap at my younger sister. My sister had been needling me all afternoon the way only sisters can, poking at old buttons she knew still worked. I finally lost my patience.

The words came out sharp, irritated, louder than they needed to be.

And when the echo of my voice settled, what I remembered most was not the argument. It was my niece standing silently at the doorway, watching everything.

Her little face wasn’t scared. It was studying. Absorbing.

Recording. In that moment, something inside me went cold. Because I suddenly understood: children don’t learn manners from instruction, they learn them from exposure. And that realization sat with me the entire time I read Manners Begin at Breakfast.

A Child Learns Emotional Safety From the Adults’ Reactions, Not the Adults’ Rules

When my niece saw me snap at my sister, she didn’t know the content of the argument, but she learned what tension looks like. She learned how conflict enters a room. She learned whether emotions are safe or dangerous, whether people can disagree without becoming harmful.

This book taught me that manners begin long before “please” and “thank you.” They begin in the way we regulate ourselves. Winter Sunshine MUFFIN CUPS January is the perfect time to bring a little warmth and color into the kitchen, and these kid-friendly Winter Sunshine Muffins do just that. Packed with sweet carrots and bright citrus, they’re a cheerful way to start the year on a healthy note.

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tray with paper liners. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, granulated sugar, brown sugar, oil, yogurt, and vanilla until smooth. Add the grated carrots, orange zest, and orange juice. Stir to combine. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients just until the flour disappears.

ne of the most powerful things a parent can do is listen. Not just hearing the words, but really paying attention to what a child is trying to say. When kids feel listened to, they grow into confident adults who trust themselves and speak up in healthy ways.

Boundaries help children feel safe and supported.

They work best when parents stick to them, even when kids push back.

As a father of six grown children, I learned early on that kids have strong thoughts and big feelings—long before they know how to explain them. I also learned that parents don’t have to agree with everything their child says. But showing that you care about their point of view makes all the difference.

The challenge for many parents is this:

When kids understand why a rule exists, they’re more likely to respect it—even if they don’t love it.

How do you listen to your child while still being the parent—setting rules, limits, and expectations?

The good news is you can do both.

Ask Questions Before Giving Answers When your child is upset or wants to tell you something, try starting with curiosity.

“What happened?”

“How did that make you feel?”

“Help me understand.”

You can explain the reason behind a rule: “This helps keep you safe.”

Be the Example They Learn From Children pay more attention to what we do than what we say.
