School opens as it always has

This year’s ColtFest and Homecoming were filled with school spiritandfunactivities, reminding everyoneof life before COVID-19.

From Spirit Week to the Homecoming dance, hundreds of students proudly celebrated being a Colt. Students participated in vari-

ous fun activities, which were organizedby StudentGovernment.

The main event was the annual Homecoming game; students and alumni dressed in school colors andwereabletowatchthefootball teamdefeatHerricks, 28-6.

“I was thrilled for the team,” said Principal Nicole Hollings. “They work really hard like all of our athletic teams, and the win

was great forthem.”

As part ofthe game’sfestivities, the Homecoming Court was presented to the supportive crowd. The court was made up of seniors Bryce Gould-Anderson, Gavin Giordano, Julianna Belbol, Julia Parente, andSophia Trippicione.

Gould-Anderson and Parente were then crowned as king and queen.

ColtFest was held before the game, inviting students and families to fun activities and food trucks. Groups set up tables and offeredinformationandfunthings along the way.

Not only was the Homecoming game a success, but the Fall Ball was alsoan enjoyable celebration.

“The Homecoming dance was my favorite school spirit event. Seeing so many kids enjoying the night was fantastic,” Ms. Hollings said.

The dance was put together by Student Government, who beautifully decorated the gym and the courtyard. Students enjoyed getting dressed up, hi ing the dance floor and having their pictures taken by photographers.

It was a rare occasion for the courtyard to be open and enjoyed. When students weren’t dancing, theyenjoyedge ingsomefreshair in the courtyard

“I had a really good time with my friends dancing to the music the DJ played and cooling off outside in the courtyard,” said sophomore Mia Cavero. “Definitely the dancing and singing to the music was my favorite part ofthe night.”

As part of the week, students in each grade took part in the hallway decorating contest. Each group came up with creative and fun decorations to stand out among the others. The group that stood out the most was the junior class, whotookfirstplaceandwon the competition.

New AP in Guidance

With the new school year comesnewfaces in new places.

Ms. Danielle Amato has taken over as one of the building’s three assistant principals. Her office can be found in the corner of the Guidance and Wellness Center.

Having been in the education field for quite some time, this is not her first stop.

“I started in education as a school counselor in 2000 in the Sewanhaka Central High School District,” Ms. Amato said. “After three years as a school counselor at Floral Park Memorial High School, I became the PPS Chairperson at H. Frank Carey High School. I loved my time within the Sewanhaka Central HighSchoolDistrict,butafter20 years, I wanted a new challenge, whichledmetobecominganassistant principal,”she said.

Change and growth is something that the Calhoun administration has advocated for, and what be er way to learn it than to see it in the leaders of school. At Calhoun, she is in charge of the Wellness Center, a spot for students to go to when seeking any kind of help or simply to catchup with their counselors.

With her past as a counselor, itseemsthereisnobe erperson to be in charge of the Wellness Center than MsAmato.

“I firmly believe it is essential to help students build resiliency and provide an essential foundation for academic, social, and emotional success,” she said.

Ms.Amatosaidshewantsstudents to make the most of their time inthe building.

“Iwantstudentstohaveapositiveandmemorablehighschool experiencefilledwithwonderful memories,” she said.

Her eagerness to add to the Calhounwayoflifeissomething students willappreciate.

“While at Calhoun, I hope to assist in continuing to create an excitement for learning, shaping a vision for both academic and social and emotional success while being a source of support forboth facultyand students.”

Toget to know Ms.Amatoon a personal level, she is a mother and a dog mom. She enjoys watching her daughter play soccer, being supportive and cheering her daughter on.

dance and the game was Spirit Week. Student Government and its adviser, Mrs. Catherine Arresto, came up with fun and iconic themesforeachday, suchasAdam Sandler Day, Pajama Day, Blue & Gray Day, Anything but a Backpack Day, and Country versus Country ClubDay.

Whether it was dressing down and mismatched like Adam Sandler, wearing a cowboy hat, or findingcreativewaystocarrytheir books, studentsandteachersmade the most ofeachday.

“Ithinkitwasgreatforstudents to have fun and show their school spirit. Mrs. Arresto and Student Government did a great job,” Ms. Hollingssaid.

Another ColtFest event was the pep rally. Students who are a part of a fall sports team were celebratedduringthepeprally, embracing their school spirit and being announced to take the field.

Each team picked a song and cameupwithfunnychoreography or a routine that represented their team. Other students and teachers in the stands had as much fun watching the creative entrances each ofthe teams came upwith.

Unlike the last few years of schoolthathaveseen funactivities andsportscancelledbecauseofthe pandemic, the 2022-2023 school year started like most years before it. The school spirit of ColtFest

and homecoming came through with the work of student leaders and the support of fellow Colts.

“It was great to have Homecoming early in the year. I feel like it brought the student body together and set a great tone for the year,” Ms.Hollings said.

Students interested in a future in medicine and healthcare have a clubto call theirown.

TheMedicalClubgivesstudents insight and experience into their potentialfieldandachancetoconnect with their peers.

“I’ve always wanted to work in the medical field, so Med Club reallyappealedtomeasIbeganto figure out what I wanted to do in life,” said senior Sofia Mescolo o, theclub’svicepresident.“It’ssuch a beneficial club for anyone who wants to end up in the medical field, and it’s helped me hone in on the specific job I aspire to have, whichis a physician’sassistant.”

Members take part in fundraising activities, such as the “Pink Out” football game and the senior footballgame.

Following last year’s success, the members sold pink shirts again this year to raise awareness for breast cancer. All the proceeds earned for the “Pink Out” will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

“Wenowhaveabout60students in the club, and we have raised over $700 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in just two months of being in school this year,” said senior Athena Silver, clubpresident.

The club was also extremely successful in raising hundreds of dollars for the Multiple Sclerosis Society by selling Goldfish crackers.

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease thataffectsthecentralnervoussystem, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. When communication signals from the brain are disrupted, unpredictable symptoms such as fatigue, memory problems, pain, blindness, and/ orparalysis result.

In addition, during the holiday season last year, the Medical Club donatedmanygiftsto teenagersin the pediatric unit at Mount Sinai South Nassau.

“One of the best parts of this club is being able to raise awareness, learn, and educate others all simultaneously. I’m honored and glad to be apart of such a great group ofpeople,”Silversaid.

Students also experience the chance to speak with a variety of healthcare providers, which may help them narrow down their intereststoaspecificfieldtheycould potentially study in the future.

Medical Club has previously spoken to a nurse and hopes to speak with a private practice owner this year, as well as a pediatrician.

Fieldtripshavebeenlimitedover the last few years, but since there are fewerCOVID-19 protocols, the group is hopeful that they can go on field trips to further expand their knowledge of the healthcare fieldand gain experience.

“We are planning to hopefully makeourwayto apediatriconcology unit dressed as Disney prin-

cesses to brighten up their lives,” Silver said. “That is what Medical Club is about.”

Inclubmeetings, membersgain hands-onexperience,includingthe ability to take blood pressure with a manometer and stethoscope. Knowing how to take your own blood pressure is not only useful for those interested in healthcare, but useful for determining your heart health and risk fordisease.

“I love being a part of medical club because I can guide others with theknowledge I currently

know while also being in a learning position while we hear from healthcare workers teaching us about the medical field,” Mescolo o said.

The club is advised by Mrs. Christine Fico, and meetings are held on Tuesdays after school in roomin 330.

More than just a drama

Now in its fifth season, “All American” is a show filled with plot twists that will leave you at the edge ofyourseat.

“All American” has been featuredonaweeklybasisonTheCW since 2018, with episodes streaming on Netflix once each season is complete.

Set in a fictitious high school in California, the main character, Spencer James, is played by Daniel Ezra. Spencer is an extremely talented football player and cares greatly about his family. He lives in Crenshaw, an area in Los Angeles (depicted as being filled with gangs and danger), with his mom and younger brother. When a coach from another high school comestorecruithim, hiswholelife isthrown upsidedown.

In order to pursue his dream of making it to the NFL, Spencer decides to transfer schools. After all, the coach who recruited him (played by Taye Diggs) is a former NFL player himself. Spencer moves in with the new coach and his family and a ends a high school in Beverly Hills to play football there. Naturally, this high

school is in a wealthy area with its own set of problems. The coach’s two childrenareOliviaandJordan Baker, played by Samantha Logan and Michael Evans.

Spencer is constantly torn between the two worlds: his old schoolandfriendsononesideand his new school and teammates on the other.

AnaspectabouttheshowIgreatly enjoy is the process of Spencer maturing emotionally. In Season 1, Spencer frequently lets his emotions get the be er of him, leading to issues with his family that he has to resolve. Later in the series, Spencer demonstrates greater selfcontrol, remainingcalmindifficult

situations.

Though centered around the world of football, All American definitely has its fair share of drama. It includes important themes and lessons about the use of drugs and alcohol, mental health, family dynamics, and gang violence. All of these topics and more are contributing factors into how the plot ofthe storyplays out.

Fansoffootballwillenjoyallthe scenes that take place in practice and in games, but the show is just as popularwith non-football fans.

Fourseasonsin,Iabsolutelylove it. Season 5 started already on The CW, or you can wait for the entire season to droponNetflix.

Five years since its release, the Nintendo Switch is already one of the world’s most successful gaming consoles.

The question is how will Nintendo top its already overwhelming popularity and success?

The lineup for 2022 and 2023 video games on Nintendo Switch will push the success even further than it already is.

Atthebeginning ofthe Switch’s reign came the newest concept for open world games; games that make less use of loading screens and the connection between different environments and areas moved along without the use of filler screens or classic loading imagesinthe corner.

Themostfamousofthesegames was “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.” Not only was it the first Zelda game on the Switch, but it also made brilliant use of the Switch’s advanced graphics. It showed the world that with the rightgraphicsandtechnology, trulyopenworldgameswereentirely possible.

Nintendo continued on with its line of open world games with titles such as “Pokémon Legends

Nintendo’s next phase

Arceus,” “The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt,” “Subnautica: Below Zero,” “Monster Hunter Rise,” “Xenoblade Chronicles 3.”

Nintendo has every intention of keeping their throne with open world games. One of the more known open world titles that have been set to releasein2022and2023 is “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.”

First teased in E3 2019, it was set to be a sequel to “Breath of the Wild.”

It means to carry on the newly found legacy of open world that BOTW creators Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma started with the release ofBOTW.

The game is set to release on May 12, 2023, and is something that all gamers alike have been anticipating since its first teaser trailer in2019.

WiththeclassicZeldafranchise starting the open world title business, other well-known gaming franchises have also jumped onthe bandwagon. “SonicFrontiers,”anew open world spin on the original formula of the Sonic series is set to release on November8,2022onall consoles, including Switch, Xbox, and Playstation. LikeallSonic games before it, “Sonic Frontiers” centers around the familiar blue hedgehog on his questtogatherthe chaos emeralds on a mysterious island fighting against the nefariousDr.Eggman, butwiththetwist of new freedoms and open world concepts, showing that the formulaofRPGscantrulybeaddedonto freedominagamewhilemakinga memorable series.

With fans of Zelda and Sonic being appeased in their wish for an open world series, we can’t

leave classic Mario fans out of the fun. The game “Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope,” which was released this month, brings the Mario series into the formula of an open world game. And with leaks and rumorsofa“Super MarioOdyssey 2” in the works, fans can all hope to enjoy the red-capped man himselfinthegloriousopen world foryears to come.

Go a catch em all, they say. Nothing of the sort is more true for the series of Pokémon with anticipationbeingbuiltupforatruly immersive experience of the openworld game set for release later this year, even with the formula of usuallylinearpokémongames.

“Pokémon Scarlet and Violet,” set for release on November 18, 2022, follows the gamer’s adventure along with Pokémon in the Paldea region. This game will mark the ninth iteration of PokémonRPGs.

With numerous trailers teasing the new pokémon gamers will encounter on their journey and the three separate stories throughout the game, Pokémon fans across the globe are waiting to start their journey whenthis game releases.

Other notable companies, such as Microsoft, are also making their marks on the Nintendo Switch, withthehighlyanticipated“Minecraft Legends,” set for release some time in 2023.

This game follows the characters and mobs of Minecraft and the combat system of Minecraft Dungeons to provide a truly immersive experience in the cubed world itself. Get ready to gather resources and gather armies on a larger scale. In addition to being availablefortheSwitch, itwillalso be playable on the PC, Xbox, and Playstation.

Open world games are the future of gaming and will produce memorable games from the classic franchises that fans all love. From The Legendof Zelda to even Kirby, fans all can look forward to new games in an immersive style with the characters that make them special.

Although there are many great albums to choose from, these are by farthe ten best.

“The Definitive Collection”Stevie Wonder. Choosing favorite albumsissohardwithallthegreat music inthe world, but this album was an easy add for me.

Growing up, my family always had me listen to Stevie Wonder, whether it was at parties, around the house, or during family dinners. At my age it’s probably not common for people to be listening to Stevie Wonder, but this album has an emotional meaning to me. Stevie truly puts so much power into each and every one of his songs, makingthemworthalisten.

This album includes some of my favorite songs, such as “I Was Made to Love Her,” “Hey Love,” and “You are the Sunshine of My Life.” There are songs with more funk, such as “Master Blaster,” and slower and heartfelt songs, suchas “Overjoyed.”

StevieWonderissuchatalented artist, which is exactly this album iseasily Top 10 inmy heart.

“Sweetener”- Ariana Grande. Ariana Grande has always been one of my favorite singers since I was li le, and although I love all

of her albums, this one made me realize how talented she really is.

Thealbumincludessomeofmy favorite songs, such as “breathin,” “pete davidson,” “God is a woman,”“successful,”and“raindrops.” Grande really portrays her talent in this album with the harmonies, her high notes, and the passion in the songs she puts ineachsong.

“Igor”-Tyler,TheCreator.Tyler, the Creator is not only an amazing singer, but he also produces songs withadifferenttypeofelectricfeel and style ofrap.

This album was produced in 2019 and has been popular ever since with some of my favorite songs including “NEW MAGIC WAND,” “GONE, GONE THANK YOU,” “A BOY IS A GUN,” and “RUNNINGOUTOF TIME.”

The album kicksoffwith asong called “IGOR’S THEME” that includes an electric intro and silent singing.Tyler,TheCreatordoesan incredible job, which is why this is one of my go-to albums when I’m looking forsomething to listen to.

“The Stranger” - Billy Joel. This albumis100percentoneofthebest albums released. It contains songs such as “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant,” “Vienna,” “Movin’ Out,” and“Just theWay YouAre.”

This album also relates back to my childhood because my family

would always play these songs at parties or dinners. Songs such as “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant” have such a different feel because it starts off with a slower pianoandgraduallychangedtoan upbeat song in the end. This song is 7 minutes and 40 seconds long, and although people may say that’s too long, I think this song

was the perfect length.

This album contains some of

I’ve seen Harry Styles in concertbefore, butnothingcouldhave prepared me for this.

Earlier this year, Harry Styles announced a residency show in four cities: Chicago, Austin, LA, and of course, New York. Styles just toured the U.S. not long ago, butmorepeoplewantedtogothan everbefore.Butwhatdrawseveryone back to see the man multiple times, especially during the same tour?

Iimmediatelysigneduptogeta presale code, hoping and praying that I got something. The presale code means you have access to “early tickets,” and while I didn’t get anything, my best friend did eventually get a code.

EveryoneknowsthatTicketmaster is awful. They jack up prices, let bots get all the tickets, and put

tickets on sale at the worst times. When it came time to get tickets, it was in the middle ofa schoolday.

Wedecidedtoignoreoureducation for Harry Styles, but we were putinatNo.2,000+onthequeue.I just assumed we were done for.At thispointall faithwaslost, andwe justwent backto class.

ThatwasuntilmyfriendgotanothertextfromTicketmasterle ing us know there would be another pre-sale for a different date. This was our chance. On my way home from school, I got a frantic phone call. I heard my friend screaming, and all I could understand was, “I’m No. 2 on the queue, and I’m trying to get pit tickets.”

Shockingly, the payment went through, and we got two pit tickets, whichwouldmeanbeingright in front ofthestage.

I thought we got past the hard part, but ge ing pit tickets opened a new set of problems. While pit can be great, the process for getting to the front is like having to gothroughwarzonetrenches. Not to mention many fans do a thing wheretheysleeponthestreetsand wait for days just to get a spot in the front.

Not wanting to sleep ontheratinfested streets of NYC, we decided to get to MSG as early as possiblethedayoftheshow.MSGhas a process of giving out wristbands at 9 a.m., then making everyone

come back just to line up again in the same order for the official pit wristband at 4p.m.

After passing multiple rats (three to be exact), we brought out towels and sat on the streets of NYC from 4 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. We weren’t allowed on MSG property until around 8 a.m., so everyone linedup across MSG near the Moynihan Train Hall and got fan-made wristbands. We moved to MSG property at around 8 a.m. and got the wristbands at 9a.m.

Afteranexhaustingmorning, we took a train home, caught up on sleep, showered, and got ready for the concert. We went back to MSG at 4 p.m. and waited to line up to get inside. They let us inside at 5:30 p.m. to give us yet another wristband and water.

At this point my friend and I were either panicking that we were about to see Harry Styles or half asleep on the ground. Once 6:30 p.m. rolled around, we were moved to the pit. It was time. The entire day planning, traveling, and waitingled to thismoment.

They made us hold up our wristswiththethreewristbands we accumulated, and we began to speed walk into the pit. This was probably the most stress-

Harry Styles commanded the crowd from the opening song, “Daydreaming.” (photo by Isabelle Pan) The buzz on 7th Avenue outside of Madison Square Garden was electric in anticipation for ge ing

ful moment of my life. When our speed walking began to border running, we got yelledat to walk.

Once we got through all the hallways and hit the pit, our plan on where to stand flew out the window. We jumped on the first open spot near the barricade and grabbed it asfast as possible.

Touching the barricade was just a breakdown of realizing Harry Styles was about to be three feetaway fromus.

Before the show started, we listened to the opening, which had calming music (something that I absolutely needed). We sang along to the classic songs on his pre-show playlist, such as “Best Song Ever” and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and during that time a box was rolled under the stage labeled “Soft goods.” We all knew that inside that box was the reason we had been up forover16 hours.

Then,“NewYork,NewYork” started playing. At this point all the fatigue and hunger in me left my body and a shock of adrenaline began to flow through me. We sang along with excitement and fear in our voices. This was the last song before he came on stage.

Immediately when the song ended, the speakers sprang into some cute lullaby mu-

sic (which sounded like the Minecraft music) that represented a welcome to “Harry’s House.” A li le promo played on screen of a big home opening its doors to let youinside.

The lights went down and the intro to his song, “Daydreaming,” began to play; before I knew it Harry Styles was right smack at the center of the stage. It wasn’t until the song, “Adore You,” when he walked down both catwalks, that I realized my favorite singer since I was 7 was standing right in front ofme.

My jaw was on the floor the entire show. At one point he was lookingatagirl’ssignwhowasdirectly behind me, and to be honest I was slightly terrified. He’s a really large man when you actually get close to him.

In that moment, I also snapped the best BeReal I have ever taken in my life.

The rest of the concert went by in a flash, but the best moment was at the end when he played his closing song, “Kiwi.” Right at the beginning, he ran to my side of the catwalk, looked at me and the group of three girls I was standing with, and threw his water onto us. Definitely one of the top 10 moments ofmy life.

The walk back down to Penn Station after any concert is always rough, but this was prob-

ably the most difficult one. We got ice cream, caught a train, and got home after a long and exhausting day. From that day on I have just beenprocessing what happened.

Now I promise you don’t need to wait all day to have a good time at his concert. The best part of his concert is the energy of everyone in the room.

You immediately walk in and see a sea of people in feather boas, cowboy hats, and gli er. It basically looks like Party City threw up on MSG. I think that’s why people who aren’t huge fans go to his concerts and why so many people go multiple times. From the nosebleeds to the front of the pit,the entire atmosphereis so fun

because everyone is excited about thesamething. It’saverywelcoming environment, and MSG had so many photo opps and festive food that went along with the “Harry Styles” theme it felt more like a festival thananactualconcert, and during the last show of his residencytheyevengaveoutfreeboas to every personin the audience.

The concert was amazing because he has such great showmanship. He interacts with the crowd so often — even counting the amount of golf dads in the audience. It’s atrulyspecial time.

Although the process was difficult, ifyougetthechanceto go see Harry Styles, I highly recommend taking upthe opportunity.

Congratulations, freshmen.

You’re the first grade who could have a completely normal high school experience in years.

Is the 2022-2023 school year finally the normal school year? The one that the senior class has been waiting for since 2020 when their freshman year was cut short on a random Friday afternoon in March? It seems like this may finally be the year, and students couldn’t be more grateful.

Masks are no longer required, and there aren’t any plastic dividers on desks. Traditions have already taken place, and future events are highly anticipated by students.

Since the school year started, Calhoun has had a Homecoming game, ColtFest, a Homecoming dance, and more. Students are looking forward to events such as

Ba leoftheClassesandtheSpring Fling.Thentherewillbetheprom.

With a normal school year comes bundles of school spirit. It begs the question of how high our school enthusiasm would be without those three years impacted by COVID-19.

eryone to participate in something they enjoy andmeetgoodpeople.

Staff Editorial

Since we all might be out of practice, here are a few pieces of advicetotheunderclassmen, especiallythe freshman.

Take advantage of what high school has to offer. Get involved in school activities, and display school spirit when you can. Dressing up for Spirit Week or going to sporting events are what make highschool fun.

Join a school club. Calhoun has so many to choose from, from the new club H.O.U.N to Hoo eats, there is truly something for ev-

Focusonstudies, andgiveevery class your best effort. In the past years it’s not a secret that academics have taken a backseat with everyone more focused on the health and safety of others. But, as things continue to go back to normal,it’stimeforstudiestotake priority again. If you’re planning on a ending college or joining the workforce, academics are the backbone, and they’re laying the foundationofyour future.

If you’re struggling, take advantage of the opportunities surrounding you. Utilize your teachers’ extra helps or contact a peer tutor. If you’re willing to work, others are willing to help guide youto a place ofsuccess.

Don’t take a single moment for

granted. You may be si ing there wishing you could just be a senior already or be in college and done with Calhoun forever, but the years fly by, and soon enough you willbe a senior.

Savor the moments in Calhoun because you’ll never be a high school student again. Form connections with students and teachers, and even talk to that personin classyou’renotfriendswith.Don’t rush the time; you’ll soon be nostalgic foryour freshman year.

High school isn’t like the movies, but as life returns to normal, finally, the high school experience isge ingclosertotheonethatstudents have always envisioned.

Many seniors wish they were back in a freshman’s shoes and could have experienced high school normally for four years. Savor every moment, because soon it’ll beover.

Run the world

It irritates me when women in the music industry are underestimated.

Whetheritbecriticismoffemale artists or female music fans, the hate isunwarranted.

If we’re being honest, the musicindustryis builtonthe backsof the most underestimated group of people: teenage girls. Often identified as irrational and emotional (which can sometimes be true), it would be far fetched to say that they did not have an effect on pop culture.

Why did the Beatles get popular? Why do artists like Harry Styles, Justin Bieber, Olivia Rodrigo, andTaylorSwifthaveacareer? You can’t deny we have an effect on what’s popular and what’s not or paint our opinions as hysteria and obsession.

The hysteria that “only” teenagegirlshavehaspaidthebills for most famous celebrities. If a group of men can raid a town because they are angry that their football team lost (or won?), it’s okay if I dress up in a cute li le outfit with a boa and gli er when I go to see HarryStyles.

If you open Twi er and search up any popular singer or actor, you’llfindanaccountrunby(most likely) a teenage girl who has a good amount of followers waiting to see what Taylor Swift’s next

move is. The way Stan Twi er functions is what creates hype for certain celebrities, and they probably have just as much influence onan artist’s image as a manager.

There are so many ways female artists are underestimated and double standards are forced upon them. Women constantly have to worrymoreaboutwhattheywear, whattheylooklike, whattheysay, and how they act. Everything they do is put under a microscope and inspected. If it doesn’t follow society’s perfect idea of a woman, you’ll see articles calling them pushy, saying they gained weight, or anything else that is so out of pocket to say to someone. For a male artist, showing his talent is often enough.

In no way am I trying to drag menbecausetherearesomanytalentedmenwhoputtheirheartand soul into their work. I just think womenhavetododoubleasmuch to get to thesame level.

It’s time to start pu ing respect on women singers and listeners. How eachofusfeelaboutanartist does not affect anyone except for ourselves, so why do people care?

Go and enjoy your own favorite singers without tearing down a female artist or female fans.

Iftheonlyreasonyouaretrying to delegitimize an artist is because their target audience is teenage girls, you are just looking to start problemsand, sorry, butyoudon’t have goodtaste in music.

Ifwe’rebeinghonest, noonetruly loves school lunches, especially now that they’re nolonger free.

But for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors during the winter months, and seniors without a license and car, students are left witheatinglunchatschoolorfood brought from home as their only options.

What if we could find a way to bringinnewoptionsthataretasty, varied, and healthy?

Anyone who a ended ColtFest got to experience the food trucks that parked on school grounds. Why not make this a recurring practice throughout the year?

Food trucks are convenient, portable, and the food is usually delicious.Ourschoolshouldallow food trucks to reside in the back parking lot during lunch periods and after school. This would benefit both the students of Calhoun and the community.

Foodtrucks wouldprovide studentswithaplethoraofoptionsfor lunch. They would no longer have to choose school pizza or a sandwich, butinsteadcouldeasilywalk outsideandpurchasethefoodthat the trucks are offering.

As a sophomore and freshman, I hated being stuck in the cafeteria during my lunch period. If given this opportunity, I would have purchased food from these trucks and even spent my lunch period eating outside during the warmer monthsof school.

By bringing these foodtrucks

onto campus, Calhoun would be eliminating many risks students take every day when they decide to walk to Dunkin’ Donuts, Via Roma, or Boswells. Having food trucks on campus would allow parents to feel at ease knowing their kids aren’t walking along MerrickAvenuewiththeirfriends.

With the food trucks directly in the parking lot, students will no longerbelatetoclassbecause they left campus. How often have you heard a student say they drove to some far-away restaurant for lunch only to get back to school late? Now they’ll be right outside and able to hear the bell ring sig-

naling the end of class. Since they areeatingoncampus, they’llknow that they don’t have a viable excuse to be late.

Teachers and administrators could also benefit from this concept by being able to quickly run outside and grab a food truck lunch inbetween their periods with a class.

This idea would also benefit clubs in many ways. Clubs could take turns renting spaces out to food trucks or create a deal with food trucks giving the club a portion of profits for allowing the trucks to park there. These funds could go towards many things to

be er our school, such as lights for the football field, installing picnic tables for students to eat at, or toward student events such as dances like the Fall Ball. Student Government could generate a ton offundsthroughthiscollaboration with food trucks, which will in turn be er our schoolcommunity.

Allowing food trucks to park outside ofour schoolwill give students a chance to eat something other than the “typical” school lunch. I’mready tosaygoodbye to boring lunch periods and hello to the delicious food trucks that can begiventheopportunitytoparkin our lot.

Should gym be mandatory?

Phys. Ed. teaches many life skills

There are so many key benefits ofphysicaleducationthatimprove your knowledge and your health.

So many life skills are learned in gym classes. You may look back onedayandappreciatetheknowledge that was pounded into your head every year of your adolescence.

Whatotherclassisteachingyou what to do if someone is having a hearta ack?Whatotherclassgoes in-depth on how to give CPR to someonewhoneedsit?Gymclasses teach important concepts and life skills that young adults need to know in their lifetime.

Physical Education has gone through many adaptations to make gym classes more feasible for younger generations.Ask your parentswhattheydidingymclass. They’ll tell you they did strenuous activities like running actual laps aroundthetrack.Todaymostgym teachers give a variety of options fortheir students includinga team sports option, walking wellness, weight roomactivities, and more.

Students can choose what they want to do as long as they are being active. If you’re doing somethingyouenjoy,that40minutesof activity flies by. Gym teachers are lookingtoaccommodatethewants of their students, oftentimes settingthemuponteamsoringroups with their friends. They teach for the students and their well-being and are making changes to make kids enjoy their classes. I know you would rather be walking laps aroundthetrackwithyourfriends listening to music rather than running laps for40 minutes.

The more optimistic one is to their gym class, the more enjoyable it will be, which can serve as a nice break from harder classes throughout the day.

Physical Education classes are also known to, believe it or not, improve both your physical and mental health. Regular physical activity is proven to reduce heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and blood sugar, stroke, and diabetes. It’s common knowledgethatexerciseandphysicalactivitystrengthensyourheart andimprovesyourphysicalconditionand health.

AccordingtotheCDC,thecoun-

try’s health protection agency, “Regularphysicalactivitycanhelp children and adolescents improve cardiorespiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control weight, reduce symptoms of anxietyanddepression, andreducethe risk of developing health conditionssuchas:heartdisease, cancer, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and obesity.”

Ontheflipside, the CDCwarns of the consequences of physical inactivity. These include energy imbalance, high blood pressure, obesity, and an increase in the risk fordevelopingbreast, colon, endometrial, and lung cancers.

Physical activity, as we know, increases blood flow, but what does that mean for students? After engaging in physical activity studentshaveshownandreported increased a ention and concentrationintheirotherclasses.Increased bloodflowfromaphysicalactivity means increased blood flow in the brain too. This leads to more energy and oxygen, making our brains comprehendandperformbe erin classes. This increased brain activity will also help with their cognitive skills and memory asstudents can recall information post consistent activity be er than without it.

Notonlyaretherephysicalbenefits, but gym classes also improve your mental health. There have been many studies done about physical exercise and its effects on mental health, and time and time again, it’s been reported that activity can reduce depression and anxiety, build self-confidence, and teach students how to work with otherscollectively.

According to the Mayo Clinic, doing 30 minutes or more of exercise a day for three to five days a week may significantly improve depression or anxiety symptoms. Exercising in gym releases endorphinsandhelpstakeyourmindoff ofyour worries.

Physical Education is truly a great class that provides students with so many benefits for their physical and mental health. Classeshavebeenmodifiedtoacclimate to students’ needs and wants.

Whetherit’salessoninnutrition or CPR, walking around the track, or shooting basketballs, students learn and grow, which is why physical education is essential for allschools.

Give students more choices than gym

It’swell-knownthatbeingactive andmovingyourbodyiscrucialto sustaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle, but are physical educationclassesreally doing the trick?

I believe physical education classes should not be mandatory in public schools.

The periods spent walking around the track or playing basketball can be er be spent allowingstudentstotakeasubject class, a study hall, or a lunch period for students unfortunate enough to not haveone.

Many students fill their schedulestotheextreme, takingsomany courses that they are left without a lunch period. How are schools using gym classes to preach healthy living when students are denying their bodies the nutrition needed to function throughout the day?

According to the CDC, from 1999 through 2020, obesity prevalenceincreasedintheUnitedStates from 30.5 percent to 41.9 percent. Is playing volleyball every other dayingymdoinganythingtoslow down that increase?

In many schools, students are provided the “varsity option,” which states that students who participate in a varsity sport are not required to have a scheduled gym period. This makes perfect sense because these student-athletes are already spending a large portion of their day moving their bodies; it is not necessary forthem to have to spend an additional periodingym class.

In addition, students may feel uncomfortable participating in gym class. In the majority of gym classes I’ve been in, it’s mostly the premiere athletic students shooting basketballs while the rest of the class stands around watching. When teachers force students to participate and even call them out in front of the entire class, whether it be in a general ed class or in physical education, it’s embarrassing, and from my experience, makes a student want to participateevenless.Manystudentshave anxiety, soitisunfairforastudent tohavetoparticipateinaclassthat willincrease their anxiety.

While we hope all high school students practice personal hygiene, we know that this isn’t the

case. If students become a sweaty and smelly mess during their gym periods, the rest of the student body will suffer. In classrooms we sit closely together, so it is unfair for students to have to deal with the smell of kids who just came fromgym.Evenifthestudentdoes practice perfect personal hygiene, if they are forced to play a sport for 41 minutes, they’re bound to become a li le bit sweaty.

Majority of students aim to look presentable throughout the school day, and having gym early on could ruin this for them. Many students enjoy wearing what they wanttoschool—jeans, skirts, slippers — but gym class ruins their opportunity to dress how they want. It’s extremely uncommon for people to change in the locker rooms (another circumstance that causes anxiety), so students end up wearing “gym appropriate” clothes all day, which is not the preferred choice for many. Not to mention the unlucky students whose gym lockers are literally in front of the door leading to the hallways.

There are many students who don’t get to take all of the classes they want during high school. There simply isn’t enough room in their schedule. By removing the mandatory gym class, students will have the opportunity to take another class that sparks their interest. There are tons of electives available for students to take, so givingthemthisperiodwillenable them to dive into their interests.

Many students like gym class, andforthosestudents, theywould be given the option to take gym as an elective. This option would make all students happy because they cantake gym ornot.

There are plenty of benefits to moving your body to stay healthy; however, these benefits can be fulfilled elsewhere, outside of gym class. Physical education classes should not be mandatory for high school students for both obvious and hidden reasons. By eliminating this mandatory class students without one will be able to have a lunch period, students will be able to take another class they are interested in, it will relieve anxiety, it causes students to feel uncomfortable throughout the day after theirgymclass, andsomanyother schoolsoffer the “varsity option.”

Pt./Counterpoint:

FollowingitspremieronNetflix, “Monster:TheJeffreyDahmerStory”wasthemostwatchedseriesof the week on the platform with a 196.2 millionhour view count.

TheshowfollowseventsinvolvingAmerican serial killer/cannibal Jeffery Dahmer from childhood to death, emphasizing his sickening murders.

Consisting of 10 episodes of around 50 minutes each, the series adds up to a total of eight hours. Of those eight hours, I could only bear to watchthree.

I had always been interested in true crime, watching documentaries and interviews whenever I cameacrossthem.Ihavedefinitely heard concerning and “throw-upworthy” things over the course of my interest, but I’ve managed to hold up throughthem.

However, the Dahmer series was nothing compared to what I had watched and read; it was disgusting in both a visual and moral sense.

The first episode skips to Dahmer’s arrest and final a empt at murder, covering survivor Tracy Edwards’s traumatic night and escape. The second is about the killing of Konerak Sinthasomphon, and the third, Steven Hicks.

Bytheendofthethreeepisodes, my brows felt permanently furrowed, and my mouth was basically cemented open. I teared up numerous times while watching. These were things people actually experienced, people whose lives were stolen from them by the hands of someone sosick. And now, it’s available to everyone to watch from the comfort of our beds, with our hands stuck in a tub of popcorn like it’s some silly slasher Halloweennovelty act.

How could any sane person believeitwasokaytomakea“story” out of this subject ma er? Could something filled with such deep

detail and actual cruelty really sit well enough with the victims’ families for them to give consent to this?

Inshort,no.Infact, theyweren’t even taken into consideration during the production. In recent public tweets and statements, many family members of the victims have criticizedtheseries.

“I was never contacted about the show,” wrote RitaIsabel, sister ofvictimErrolLindsey, inanessay publishedbyInsider.“Theydidn’t ask me anything. They just did it.”

Isabelrightfullygoesontorefer toNetflixas“moneyhungry”with itsharshandcarelessactionofdisplayingthemortifyingexperiences ofthevictimstothescreensofmillions aroundthe world.

Anothersimilarstatementcame from Shirley Hughes, mother of Tony Hughes, when she spoke to The Guardian.

“I don’t see how they can do that,” Hughes said. “I don’t see how they can use our names and put stuff out like that out there.”

She, too, questioned how the show was even allowed to film the series without direct permission from her and the rest of those affected.

As someone privileged enough to have never gone through anythingremotelysimilar,Ifullysympathize with Isabel and Hughes, knowing that the show can bring back those oppressive emotions to them a second time. The death of a loved one, especially in such a gruesomema er,isnotsomething that can ever be fully recovered from — let alone made accessible ona streaming service.

Unfortunately,Ievenfoundmyself disconnecting from the reality of the series while I was watching. I was distracted by the nature of the show, forge ing these were traumas of real people and not those of made-up characters. That theywerelivesofpeoplenowtobe remembered as “Episode 1,” “Episode 2,” and“Episode 3.”

Though director Ryan Murphy claimstheshowwasmadetofocus on “the failure of the Milwaukee Police Department’s disregard for Dahmer’s actions,” it’s blatantly obviousthat is not the case.

Not only did the Dahmer case make its way to television screens, butithasalsogonefarenoughinto socialmediatofindgroupsofpeoplewhoshowpityandargueways to justify the killer’s stomach-turning behaviors.

Specifically on TikTok, trends and new phrases have strikingly emerged, publicizing the show further and distracting people from the seriousness of the case. BeautyinfluencersonTikTokhave gone as far as dressingupand creating looks inspired by Dahmer, which then influenced some to be him this Halloween.

Movie night

Whyisitthatweturnedatragedyintoatrend? It’strulyappalling to see that people will trade their humanity forlikes andfollowers.

The Dahmer case was never something that should have been publicized to this extent. He never should have been put in a position where people could portray him as someone to romanticized and made into a topic to discuss with friendsover the internet.

After watching portions of the Netflix show and researching the controversy, I have come to one conclusion: the Dahmer series was notmadetobringawarenesstothe situation, and it was not meant to bring closure to the victims’ families.Itwasmadeforentertainment and to make a billion-dollar company richer. It was made to create a story ofJeffery Dahmer.

Top albums

their best songs such as “Eruption,” “You Really Got Me,” “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love,” and “Why Can’t ThisBe Love?”

Thesong“Eruption”iseasilyone ofthecoolest rocksongsto ever be made. It really portrayed Eddie’s talent on the guitar; how fast he playstrulyamazesme.Thisalbum is easily in the Top 10 because of Eddie’s amazing guitar skills and how eachsongincludesDavidLee Roth’s incrediblevocals.

The Essential Michael Jackson - Michael Jackson. This was hard for me to choose because Michael Jacksoncan’tmake a bad album.

This incredible album holds some of his best songs, such as my personal favorites, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” “Rock Your Body,” “Dirty Diana,” and “Off the Wall.” These songs all have a different feel.

“Dirty Diana” has more of an angry feel with less upbeat music and more incredible vocals by Michael. “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,, “Off The Wall,” and “RockYourBody”areallmoreupbeat and dance songs that Jackson ismoreknown for.

Thisalbumportraysalldifferent types of songs, and it really shows how his range can change based onthemood of eachsongs.

The Platinum CollectionQueen. Every song on this album

is be er than the next. It includes some of the best songs in history, such as “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Killer Queen,” “Crazy Li le Thing Called Love,” and “Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy.” These songs really portray the talent that lead singerFreddie Mercury holds in his voice.

Mercury is one of the greatest singers of all time, and I wish I would have had the opportunity to seehim live.

The harmonies, as well as the power in his voice, show how amazing the band really is. This is an album that I highly suggest everyone give a listen.

“Nevermind”-Nirvana- This album has some of my favorite songs, such as “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Drain you,” “Lounge Act,” “On A Plain,” “Lithium,” and “StayAway.”

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” is a well-known song to many people, but the others are not as well knownandareeasilymyfavorites.

Lead guitarist and singer Kurt Cobain and drummer Dave Grohl made this album one of the best to ever exist with the different feel of strangelyrics,Kurt’suniquevoice, and Dave’s incredible drumming skills. There is not a single bad song onthis entire album.

“Fine Line” - Harry Styles. This is the second studio album Styles

released, and it is filled with incrediblesongsabout sadness, happiness, and breakups.

Styles has been my favorite singer ever since One Direction, andwhenhecameoutwiththisalbum, I instantly became obsessed and fell in love with every song.

If I had to choose a few of my favorites, I would have to choose “Cherry,” “To Be So Lonely,” “She,” “Adore You,” and “Golden.”

Someofthesesongsaresadand slow, while others are more upbeat and happy. I love the differentemotionsheputsintoeachand every one of his songs.

“HS1” - Harry Styles. My favorite album is Harry Styles’s first album, “HS1.”

This album is 100 percent a noskip album and contains several different feels of songs, such as “Carolina,” “Sign of the Times,” “MeetMeintheHallway,”“Woman,” and “Kiwi.” “Sign of the Times” is a slower and more passionate song, and “Kiwi” being more of an upbeat, strong, and powerful song.

Although I may be biased having seen him in concert and loving himforyears,Ido believethat this deserves the No. 1 spot of albums worth a listen.

Though it’s been six years since the boys’ varsity soccer team won theClassAALongIslandChampionship against Brentwood in 2016, the team’s winning culture has never died.

With returning varsity players, Head CoachChris Vogel, and new Assistant Coach Joe Thomann, the team has an overall record of 8-2-1 in ConferenceA Central.

The team moved on to the second roundof the playoffs after defeating Clarke, 3-2.

Drew Lennon scored one goal

and added an assist. Captain P.J. Kakalos and Jonathan Cardo each added one goal. Goaltender Tyler Pra stopped seven shots.

However, afterba lingMineola in the second round, they lost on penalty kicks. The game was tied 1-1 after two overtime periods, which lead to the shoot-out. Mineolawon5-4on penalty kicks.

Mineola will now play MacArthur in the quarterfinals.

Starting off the season right, the boys wontheirfirst two games against Valley Stream South and Hewle . Hewle was favored to win, having had a 3-0 record and just defeating the renowned South

Side. However, the Colts won the game, 1-0, when Kakalos scored a spectacular header with an assist from junior Ryan Nicholson. Pra made eight saves.

Captain RaymondAdams said, “That was the most energetic game I’ve ever played. We need to showthis tenacity and effortevery game.”

Many of the team’s recent accomplishments can be accredited to starting goalkeeper Tyler Pra He is leading the team with 43 saves and 4 shutouts along with only le ingup 4 goals in 7games.

As everyone knows, bonding as a team is something incredibly important to perform well.

“Whetherit’sonthefieldorjust hanging out, it’s apparent that the team connects well with each other,”Pra said.

Goaltender is one of the most challenging positions, being alone on the field watching as the game happens around you, hoping that yourdefendersaredoingtheirjob.

However, Pra said, “There’s nobe erfeelingthanmakingabig save and having everyone cheeringforyou.Itsometimesgetshard knowingI’mthelastmanandhaving all the pressure on me, but the best way to get around it is having a short memory and focusing on what’s next.”

As one of the be er teams Calhoun has seen in recent years, many strengths are coming to light.

Captain Ethan Hertwig said, “On the field we have a strong, well-rounded team with a good goalie, as well as good players ready to come off the bench. This team also has the perseverance needed to make it to the playoffs.”

Therosterhasyoungtalentfrom players such as Lennon and Matthew Borgese to keep the team going after this year’s seniors graduate. Additionally, the boys believe team manager Rohan She y has contributed largely to the success of the team. He has been the man-

agerofCalhounsoccerforthepast three years, being a source of uplifting energy and constant team spiritfromthe sidelines.

The entirety of the team had the same goals all throughout the season: securing a team county championshiptitle andearningindividualAll-County honors.

Coach Thomann is confident in the team’s strengths as they approach the season one game at a time.

“As a team, we feel that focusing on one game at a time gives us anadvantagebecauseitallowsour focustobehighestforeachandevery game,”he said.

Kakalos added, “Our team has great chemistry this year, and one key factor is that we all celebrate together. Going to Applebee’s as a team after a win brings the team together, and when a team has good chemistry it shows, which is evidentof this year’s team.”

The values of Calhoun athletics have been to play with heart and with skill.

“Whathasreallystoodouttome is how much it feels the same both asateacherandasacoach.WhenI wasastudent-athleteatCalhoun,I always felt the family atmosphere that surrounded Calhoun. As a former soccer player here at Calhoun, Coach [Jim] Cantley, Coach [Sal] Montoya, and Coach Vogel created a team centered around chemistry, work ethic, and enjoyment of soccer. The players agreed the way to reach these goals is keeping their heads straight, taking it game by game, and focusing on building teambonds.

Although the team came up short of their county championshipgoal, theyworkedrelentlessly and plan to come back next season with that goal in mind: winning the LIC.
