PURPOSE BUILT REPRODUCTION BARN at West Coast West Coast Veterinary Hospital have been making good use of their purpose built reproduction barn, which sits alongside the hospital’s impressive facilities in Forrestdale.

With six large undercover sand yards and foaling down paddocks, mare and foal crush, frozen semen storage tanks and laboratory, since their completion in the last few months they’ve impressed not only clients but the Director of the Holsteiner Verband Stallion (Germany) Stable, Mr. Norbet Boley, when he visited Casall Ask pictured. Semen from the number 3 in July for the Holsteiner Verband Tour.

As the sole Holstein Verband agents for stallion in the world is stocked with West Coast stallions in WA the Hospital offers natural, Veterinary Hospital. chilled and frozen packages for those looking to breed their mare with some of the world’s leading performance horses. West Coast’s sizeable veterinary team includes a number of vets with a special interest in equine reproduction. See ad on page 9.

cameras and foal alert alarms At valley equine Valley Equine Centre’s Dr Paula Bell-Cross recently attended an internal medicine course and then headed to Melbourne in late July to attend another one on Equine Neonatology. Paula was extremely busy delivering foals last season and is looking forward to more of the same over the upcoming months.

Making good use of monitoring technology, the Practice has video cameras in all of their foaling down yards and have purchased several new Foal Alert foaling alarms for this season’s foaling down service.

The Centre’s staff are all eagerly awaiting the birth of their first frozen embryo foal, which is due in a couple of months, and this season will again be offering embryo freezing along with the hospital’s normal embryo transfer program and other breeding related services.

In other news, the recently purchased gastroscope has been put to good use already and the regular gastroscope days have proved to be very popular with Valley Equine Vet Centre clients as part of an overall evaluation of their horse’s gastro-intestinal health. See ad page 4

Hermitage Dressage’s Heidi Emery is excited about the first of their homegrown babies. Sole Mio HD is by Sandro Bedo (Sandro Hit/Donnerhall) out of their mare Dolce (Dancier/His Highness). Born via embryo transfer, Sole Mio HD marks the beginning of a new direction for the Stud.

Historically Hermitage Dressage has focused on competition with the aim to support talented young riders who have worked hard to train and establish HD horses in the competition arena. Their stallions have been an integral part of their competition team and have been successful at State and National level. They will now be focussed on a small breeding program using their international quality mares and stallions and propose offering stock to interested riders at an affordable cost or to partner with them to develop them and showcase their breeding program.

Hermitage Dressage is excited to start their partnership program with the purchase of PHP Ferdinand - from Penny Hill Park Stud - in conjunction with young FEI rider, Madison Tristram.

For the 2019/2020 breeding season they are awaiting the arrival of a Skywalker baby from a Magic Ronaldo/Graf Landau mare and are planning a repeat breeding for a full sibling to Sole Mio HD. See ad page 5 plus the front cover.

The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University

It was an exciting season at The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University last season with the equine embryo they froze back in 2012 and transferred in 2017 born. A beautiful colt, his owners are now in the process of getting him registered as part Warmblood. The Hospital continues to work on getting equine embryo freezing perfected; their laboratory covers all species and continues to have good success with the bovine embryo freezing, but equine embryos are more challenging! They’re also continuing their research in newer techniques for semen evaluation, having developed a novel test for an in-semen enzyme, which may be related to stallion fertility; staff presented the initial aspects of this work at the International Society of Equine Reproduction last year.

Routinely using computer assisted motility analysis for evaluating sperm, the Hospital also now has access to Differential interference contrast microscopy and fluorescence microscopy for even more detailed examination of individual sperm morphology. Research students are also investigating new additions for semen extenders, to improve sperm motility. The Animal Hospital has also recently installed a brand new Aquilion Lightning 80 Slice CT scanner, which is currently the most powerful veterinary CT scanner in Australia. See ad page 3.

Success for Stud’s Young Stock

Yalambi Farm is a renowned breeder of top quality performance horses and they are absolutely thrilled that their youngest European Approved Stallion, Yalambi’s Incognito VDL (Dakar VDL x Emilion), produced the highest scoring Colt (x Indoctro) Under 12 months in Australia this year as well as the highest scoring Colt (x Indoctro) and Filly (x Quidam de Revel) in Western Australia. He also produced the highest scoring Colt (x Quidam de Revel) in Western Australia in 2018.

Their latest crop of stunning foals were all awarded Elite or Premium Status in their ACE assessments earlier this year and the Stud is pleased to advise that semen from all of their stallions will be available this season, including frozen semen from Yalambi’s Confidant, Yalambi’s Cassini Rosso and Yalambi’s Carpino Z. Carpino Z is the sire of well-known Yalambi’s Finnigan, Grazi, Gucci Girl and Harvard, to name just a few. All their stallions are exceptional breeding and performance horses and Yalambi Farm has a number of horses of all ages and bloodlines available for purchase.

German-bred Import

International Bloodlines Now Available in WA

This year Powderbark Stud bought the young, top quality German-bred imported Connemara Pony stallion, Sternbergs Lenaro (IMP GER).

Lenaro is a great asset to the stud, and to all Australian Connemaras with his new bloodlines, laid-back temperament, Sternbergs Lenaro (IMP GER). trainability, athleticism, height, bone and good looks. Lenaro has had spectacular success in the show ring both in hand and under saddle, has enjoyed jumping and cross country activities, and has successfully completed his first endurance ride.

The Stud’s young stallion, Powderbark Charlie Brown, has his first purebred foals expected this season. He has had outstanding success in the show ring in hand. Both Lenaro and Charlie are perfect stallions for the progeny of the Stud’s older stallion, Glenormiston Dundrum, who is continuing his very successful breeding and ridden career. See ad on page 14.

Evale Gypsy Cob’s Evie-Ray Herson’s gorgeous stallion HS The Rocking Horse Colt, aka Lou, will be taking on a very special job this season when he will be driven by Evie-Ray to her own wedding! Evie- Ray explains, “When I purchased Lou at 10 months old I laughed about getting him into cart and driving him myself to my own wedding... and now my dream is coming true!”

In other news, Evie-Ray’s blue roan Tobiano mare Spirit is going into foal to a Palomino Tobiano stallion for a 2020 foal. Her black mare Magic is due to foal this year and has been started in cart as well. Evie-Ray is a massive fan of Gypsy Cobs, “My gorgeous stallion is going to a multitude of shows this year, including a harness show next month, and has non purebred and purebreds booked for this year’s stud season. We’ve been attending weekly dressage lessons and every coach can’t say enough good things about Lou’s work ethic and high-please drive.”

Lou was also invited to Kojonup’s Spring Haven Lodge to visit the elderly residents, their faces filled with joy as they enjoyed spending time with him and commenting what an absolute gentleman he was.

Springwater Welsh Pony Stud’s stallion Telynau Regency arrived in Australia from the UK in 2015 after Debbie McCosh set her heart on him when seeing him as a colt in 2013. With a filly already in Wales, his first filly in Australia was born last season and as well as standing at stud there are plans to show him at Welsh shows now he’s back under saddle.

Springwater Royal Leilani (Telynau Regency) at this year’s Welsh Foal The Stud also has the imported Show (Champion B). mare Telynau Royal Diamond Jubilee who had a very successful showing career in Wales before being imported in foal in 2016, her filly Springwater Royal Diva born later that year. Diamond has achieved many successes in the ring in WA, in hand and under saddle, and Debbie is excited to be breeding quality Welsh ponies for children with her ‘riding type’ ponies with substance, bone, scope and quality. CAMPDRAFTINFG AND CUTTING PROSPECTS

Mylnedale Performance Horses is a small stud breeding Australian Stock Horses and Quarter Horses with potential for campdrafting and cutting. The ten ASH and QH broodmares have been chosen for their ability to work cows, their temperament and breeding with bloodlines of Docs Freckle Oak, Roanies Lynx and Acres Destiny, plus other well known working cow lines. The stud’s colt is Acres of Who by the great Acres Destiny with Who’s Top Cat as his dam’s sire. Owner Bec Van Wingerden reports that she has seven mares due to foal, and one is Acres of Who’s first progeny, “She is due early next year and I’ll be returning all but three of the mares to him this year. He’s a 14.2hh gorgeous black stallion with a lovely cuddly temperament and lovely to ride. He’s very easy to have around and he’s in training to be ready for next year’s campdrafting and cutting competitions.” See Acres of Who ad on page 8.

Rowen Welsh Cobs Jody and Kim McKenzie are looking forward to the arrival of four foals due this season to their imported stallion Gwynfaes Madoc. With one expected from their imported mare Penstrumbly Blue Jean Baby who has already produced a number of successful progeny, including a daughter who won Victorian All Welsh Supreme Cob with her owners in December. Also due are two frozen semen AI foals, including a foal by Menai Cardi Llwyd the first by this stallion in WA and another to Taraco Firecracker. Homebred Rowen Princess Daenerys has enjoyed huge success in the show ring in the last two seasons. They have started yearling Rowen Gretel in her in-hand career; she’s sired by AI to international Welsh Cob stallion Pennel the Great, his first filly born in Australia.

The Stud has also imported a filly from the UK, Trevallion Champagne Moments who is the half sister to the highest priced foal at the UK Welsh Cob Sales, for their breeding program and she’ll be bred to Gwynfaes Madoc. On the ridden side of things several of the Stud’s progeny have been recently broken in and these performance ponies will soon be seen out and about in the show ring, dressage and in harness.
