Testing volunteers As the term draws to close I would like to thank our parent, community and staff volunteers who have made the demands of returning to school possible. When we were told at Christmas that we would be setting up and running a testing centre at school I was left with a feeling of panic at the thought of attempting to pull such a thing off. It was only made possible by our community pulling together to support us. We have been testing regularly all term but these last few weeks have really put us to the test. After nearly three weeks of solid testing of our learners (three tests each) we found only one positive result. That is one more result than we would have found had we not been testing and I hope that it has helped to reduce transmission that otherwise may have gone unchecked. James Saunders Quality of education theme It feels as though we are able to start looking forward now; that there is hope we are able to achieve some semblance of normality. I for one will be glad to get our strategic mission back on track. COVID has forced us to redirect our focus on many things. It will be nice to finally be able to direct our efforts to what we value most - the quality of the education at Honywood. I came across the following this week - ‘What You Teach Matters: How we teach should be decided once we determine what to teach’.
The work on our capital enhancing curriculum will continue to underpin our vision and plans going forward and is just as much about developing what we teach our learners as it is, how we teach them. Building character and achieving success will continue to be a part of what we do. Our aim is for learners to leave us happy as well as successful. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of our six capitals (Moral, Social, Cultural, Knowledge, Organisational and Professional) and highlight our curriculum principles. Honywood Curriculum Principles Our capital enhancing curriculum should: Foster a love for learning Be challenging, rigorous and personalised Offer breadth and depth of learning Be knowledge rich and culturally enhancing Recognise the importance of connecting with prior learning 6. Be rich in literacy, numeracy and oracy 7. Require learners to showcase their learning effectively 8. Be transparent and demonstrate progress 9. Allow learners to acquire and develop their knowledge, skills and attributes 10. Model success and aspire for excellence 11. Require learners to build and demonstrate a strong set of shared values 12. Enable learners to leave us resilient, confident and successful so they can embrace their future

These curriculum principles can be mapped across our six capitals. It won’t surprise you to know that they are mostly concentrated in the development of Knowledge capital. The thing that will make the most difference to success in this area is ensuring we have built a challenging and aspirational learning experience that progresses over the five years learners study with us. And the thing that ensures optimum execution of this curriculum content: great teaching and learning and great teachers. These are the things we will continue to develop into next year.

Moral Capital: Day to day all learners and staff live through our core values and promote equity and well being. Social Capital: All learners leave Honywood fully prepared with the resilience, attributes and independence needed to embrace, and positively contribute to, society. Cultural Capital: Authentic learning is embedded in all aspects of the curriculum. Learners develop a rich vocabulary and contextual awareness through a culturally enriching curriculum. Knowledge Capital: Deep knowledge acquisition underpins all learning. Evidence-based evaluation and analysis of learning by teachers enables personalised learning design and drives continual improvement in the classroom through the sharing of best practice. Organisational Capital: At every level of the organisation there is a culture of performance evaluation and challenge and a deep aspiration to achieve excellence and impact. Professional Capital: Leadership across the school is both learning and teacher centered and drives continual improvement through collaboration and the sharing of best practice. Dress Code When we return after Easter to more spring-like weather learners will no longer need to wear coats during learning session time as a matter of course. However should the weather on a given day be cold, or a classroom not be sufficiently warm teachers of each learning session will use their discretion as to whether or not they allow learners to wear coats during the learning session. Please remember that school jumpers are still required to be worn at all times when learners are inside the building unless they have their teachers permission during a learning session, but jumpers should be put back on at the end of each learning session before leaving the classroom. Also hoodies and sweatshirts are not permissible as alternatives to coats. Learners who wear these to school may have them taken from them and will need to collect them learner reception at the end of the school day. For learners who persistently fail to follow this rule their parents/carers may be asked to collect their hoodies/sweatshirts from the school instead. Also after Easter we will continue to encourage learners to wear masks in classrooms, we recognise that not all families are in favour of masks being worn at all times in school, however with the national picture still developing and fact we had to send a number of C9 learners home this week due to a positive lateral flow test we feel this is the best option. We will review this on a day by day basis in conjunction with national guidance and we hope we can revert back to masks only being required in corridors fairly quickly. We are also hopeful that after May half term we will be able to return the school to close to 'normal' operating conditions and end our system of staggered breaks and lunches as well as the cohort bubble system, however the local and national picture in terms of infection rates will dictate whether or not this is possible. Some learners have returned to school in items of clothing, predominantly jeans/trainers that are not part of our dress code. We recognise that for some they may have outgrown their uniform since last attending school in December. Where possible we have loaned uniform to learners so they are dressed appropriately. Over Easter can we please ask that all families use their time to ensure their children have the correct uniform for their return after Easter. Any learners returning to school after Easter not in correct dress code will be expected to wear the uniform we loan to them until they purchase their own (apart from learners that may have medical exemptions). Any learners that refuse may be given consequences and/or sent home to come back in the correct uniform that day. In the case of C11, any learners who are not following the dress code and unwilling to engage with the school and dress correctly could jeopardise the option of attending end of year celebrations. Learner Leadership @Honywood Last Friday, 15 C10 learners bravely faced a panel to interview for a role on the Learner Leadership Team. A challenge such as this, most adults find daunting, but our learners more than met this challenge. Each of them presented their ideas and thoughts on how to develop the different strands of the Learner Leadership at Honywood. It was a wonderful day, and I am immensely proud of the young people who took the challenge to apply, and interview for these roles. Learners will need two masks and a plastic bag in which to keep the spare mask. Masks to be worn at all times.
Are you about to embark on higher education or do you take part in sport or the arts at a high standard? Would some additional funding help? The Earls Colne Trust has been a supporter of young people in the local area and Honywood children since 1975. The charity provides support for projects and financial aid to individuals meeting the charity’s criteria. The charity assists young people who are engaged in any type of educational activity. It gives particular priority to young people who are studying for a recognised higher education qualification or who are already performing to a high level in the arts or in sport.
