Year of Resilience

2021 GRATITUDE REPORT

Aloha kakou

It was a big year for us at Honolulu Habitat, filled with joyful achievements and unexpected challenges. Through it all, we remained united by the vision of a world – and island – where everyone has a decent place to live.

As a Habitat homeowner, I know firsthand the tremendous impact of your support. Every time I hand over the keys to a new home, I am reminded of the moment we received ours. It’s a moment that changes everything.

Now, as chief executive officer of Honolulu Habitat, I am determined to lead this organization to do things we never have before. We will build more homes. Serve more families. And create more pathways forward for the people who need them most.

The work of Habitat is the work of many. All that we achieved this year was possible because of you – our generous donors, determined volunteers and dedicated partners. This report is a summary of the amazing impact you had on our island this year.

There’s a lot of talk these days about affordable housing. But we – you – are doing more than talking. We are building. We’re building homes, communities and hope, together.

Mahalo for your commitment to and investment in our organization. And thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for empowering us to transform this moment into the origin story of a more impactful Honolulu Habitat for Humanity.

Mahalo nui loa for your continued partnership.

Me ka haahaa, with humility, TJ Joseph Chief Executive Officer

IN 2022 YOU DID MORE THAN BUILD HOMES...

This house is for my grandchildren. It's about them now.

- Teri Mercurio, eldest daughter

...you gave peace of mind

Since 1971, Enid and Lloyd Young have been on the wait list for Department of Hawaiian Home Lands. Fifty years, three children and seven grandbabies later, they finally have a home of their own.

For 40 years, Enid and Lloyd have been resident caretakers of St. John’s by-the-sea Episcopal Church. “It’s been a big responsibility for a long time,” said Teri Mercurio, their eldest daughter, “and now that they are in their 70s, this house will give them a new way of life.”

“Mom doesn’t have to climb up and down stairs anymore,” she said, “she can carry groceries from the car right into the kitchen. Little things like these will make a huge difference in their quality of life. I cannot tell you how grateful I am to know that they’re going to have all these things for the rest of their life.”

But Lloyd, a US Navy Veteran who served four years on the USS Radford, says the house isn’t about him – it’s a family legacy. “This [house] is for my grandchildren,” he said on the day they moved in, “it’s about them now.”

...you built a legacy

Elaine and Randall Kalaluhi had a single goal in mind when they partnered with Honolulu Habitat for Humanity: to build a home, a gathering place, big enough for their entire family.

For more than a year, Elaine, Randall, and their children spent every Saturday working alongside volunteers to raise the walls of their home in Papakolea. The two-story, 6-bedroom house took 14 months to complete.

Today, four generations of the Kalaluhi family are finally together again under the same roof.

For the Kalaluhi ohana, this multi-generational house is a new sanctuary and hub for family and friends. It’s where graduations, birthdays and milestones will be celebrated. “My grandchildren are already lining up to reserve the house for their big days,” laughed Elaine. The first of many joyful occasions to take place in the home was her grandson’s 4th birthday.

I can keep my family safe and healthy here. It’s a blessing for all of us.

All I can say is thank you.

- Barbara Kapuakela, homeowner

…you helped strengthen families and communities

When Barbara Kapuakela came to Habitat, she and her three siblings, Doreen, Abraham and Thomas, had been living in their family’s generational home in Waimanalo. While filled with memories of their childhood, the house was slowly deteriorating around them and was no longer safe for them to stay.

Where the collapsing house once was, now stands an ADA compliant home. Fully accessible with ground level ramps, wheelchair accessible shower stalls and wide doorways, the house will change everything for the Kapuakela family.

But the best part, she says, is being able to stay in her home community of Waimanalo. Before partnering with Habitat, Barbara lived in fear of not being able to keep her family together. But now, thanks to you, they have peace of mind knowing that they can stay together on the land where they were raised.

OUR 2022 HABITAT HOMEOWNERS

...you reunited loved ones

Married for 28 years, Wili and Cheryl raised three beautiful children in Waimanalo before lack of available housing forced them to live apart. For years, Cheryl resided in Kapolei, where housing was easier to find, while Wili stayed in Waimanalo to care for his aging mother.

“We had such a hard time finding housing,” said Cheryl, “When DHHL suggested that we contact Honolulu Habitat, everything changed. It was such a blessing.”

On the day of their Home Dedication Ceremony, in the highly anticipated moment when the homeowners usually receive the keys to their new home, Wili and Cheryl surprised guests with a delightful prelude – a vow renewal, on the threshold of their new home, marking a new chapter for them not only as homeowners, but as a husband and wife.

Finally, after years of waiting, Wili and Cheryl are together again under the same roof.

Because of these unseen things –love, faith, and new hope – this is no longer a hale, it’s a home; a space where their spirits can finally rest.

But, on April 30, 2022, we traded our work boots for evening wear to debut our new signature event: Hard Hats & High Heels.

Partners, community leaders and Habitat homeowners joined in an evening of purpose-driven elegance to celebrate our shared vision of a world – and island – where everyone has a decent place to call home.
