Message from the Chairman

O

n behalf of the Hong Kong Rugby Union I would like to warmly welcome everyone here today to the 52nd New Year’s Day Youth Rugby Tournament. The tournament is always one of the highlights of our rugby calendar, and the best way to kick-off the New Year and clear out the cobwebs!

It is, of course, natural on 1st January to both reflect on the year just gone and also to look forward; there is certainly much for us in the rugby community to be both proud and excited about.

During the past 12 months we have seen our men appear in the Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco, win an amazing Gold Medal in the Asian Games 7s, the first team sport gold medal in Hong Kong’s history, and perform with great credit in the Rugby World Cup Repechage in Marseille - the closest we have come yet to our men emulating our women in qualifying for a 15s World Cup. Meanwhile our women have secured a slot at the World Sevens Series Qualifier Tournament here in April, and they also had a fruitful 15s tour to Europe with test matches against Spain and Wales. At age grade level, the Asia Rugby Under 20s Sevens saw our boys take gold and our girls win silver, while in the Under 18s age group it was silver for our girls and bronze for the boys. I am also delighted to be able to congratulate our U19 men’s team for their recent retention of the Asia Rugby Championship, which brings with it qualification for their 6th World Rugby U20s Trophy in Brazil next summer, a proud record indeed.

We are now looking forward with much anticipation to the launch of the new 15s Global Rapid Rugby competition in March, that will feature the newly created South China Tigers team based out of Hong Kong. It is also the 44th edition of the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Sevens in April, and it is great to see both our men’s and women’s teams

participating in the World Sevens Series Qualifiers again this year.

Behind all the success of trophies and medals lies a vibrant and dynamic rugby community that continues to grow at an amazing pace; already this season our 21 mini clubs have enjoyed three tremendous Festival days courtesy of USRC Tigers, HKU/Sandy Bay, and Flying Kukris, while the Colts have enjoyed a new Youth Championship competition and the Girls’ Youth rugby has continued to flourish. The Schools rugby season is also in full flow, and over 80 schools are involved in the Hong Kong School Sports Federation Sevens Competition.

I would like to recognise the hard work of the people who make rugby in Hong Kong possible – the match officials, the coaches, managers, the supporters and the numerous volunteers…a very big thank you to you all. Also, a special thanks to the Union staff under the leadership of Robbie McRobbie and my fellow Board Directors who tirelessly work with so much enthusiasm and passion.

Our gratitude is also extended to our tournament title sponsor Prudential, along with the numerous other suppliers and partners and of course our wonderful hosts not just today but throughout the last five decades, the Hong Kong Football Club.

I

t is with great pleasure that Brandon and I wish you all a Happy New Year and welcome you to The Hong Kong Football Club for the 52nd staging of the Prudential New Year’s Day Youth Rugby Tournament; an event which dates all the way back to 1966.

I’m not sure how many of you attended that first game, but if things have gone well last night, then there are probably a few of us who just feel as if we’ve been going that long! What better way to clear the cobwebs than being here at the club, in magnificent surroundings, watching the best of Hong Kong’s young rugby representing their club or school while getting stuck into each other.

We will see over four hundred players compete in nine games today; if you’re one of those players, congratulations and well done!

I’m sure you’ll want to give your best, and will be focussed on doing just that, but don’t forget to enjoy it too! And welcome back to those of you returning from overseas, it’ great to see you again.

A special mention to Brandon Huang, General Manager of Rugby Participation, and all the guys at the Hong Kong Rugby Union. It really is too easy to take for granted just how much hard work is required to make things look so easy!

A big thank you to Lucy Clarke, Head of Player Welfare and Medical at the Hong Kong Rugby Union, and her team for providing the very important medical cover today.

Try as I might, I can’t fail to mention, and thank, the Hong Kong Society of Rugby Football Union Referees, ably led by Matt Rodden.

If you look around, you’ll see superb playing, spectating and catering facilities here at the club, so let’s thank our General Manager, Mark Pawley, and his great team of professionals; Minos, Dominique, Mandy, Tracy, Daniel and many more.

A Brief History of the New Year’s Day Tournament

T

he first ever New Year’s Day Youth match kicked off on 1st January 1967, when a Hong Kong Schoolboys side comprised of students from King George V School took on a team of students who were at boarding schools in the UK—and so began the Hong Kong v Overseas rivalry that continues up to the present day!

One familiar name on that inaugural Overseas team sheet was captain Brian Forsgate, whose father Gerry was, for many years, the President of the Hong Kong Rugby Union and in whose memory the Forsgate Stand at HKFC is named. Brian recalls that although normally a flanker he was pressed into service as a make-shift scrum half for the game, in which position he received plenty of personal attention from the army offspring in the opposition backrow! Brian had a back operation later in the year, so missed the ’68 tournament, but his son David made an appearance in 1998 when he was actually presented with his NYD tie by his grandfather.

While the UK Schoolboys were the first names on the Middlesex Cup, the Hong Kong boys got their revenge in the second edition of the game, with 8 KGV representatives being joined by students from the St George’s military school in the victorious 1967 team. KGV had only started playing rugby in 1964, and one of those sporting pioneers, Dr Dan Hooley, remembers that before the New Year’s Day fixture they largely played against adult sides and St George’s of course.

So right from the start, the Tournament was a key date in the rugby calendar, and to make one of the teams was very much the aspiration of any young rugby player in the Territory, as it still is today, and hopefully will continue to be the case for many, many years to come!

The event has grown steadily since its inception 52 years ago, expanding to the current 9 game format that will be presented this year.

What hasn’t changed is the magnificent setting of HKFC, one of Asia’s finest sports clubs, which normally welcomes over 200 players and more than 2,000 spectators to this wonderful family day.

In 2014, the Roberts Shield match for U12 Ladies was introduced. The Roberts Shield was originally presented to the Hong Kong Mini Rugby Football Union in 1983 by Vernon Roberts, a long-time supporter of junior rugby in Hong Kong, who played a great part in the early days of the New Year’s Day Tournament. It was originally contested by the only mini rugby clubs operating at the time: Hong Kong Football Club, Kai Tak Mini Rugby Club (now DEA), and Stanley Fort Mini Rugby Club (now Valley Fort). There were 9 editions of the Roberts Shield competition played up to 1992, when the Shield was lost.

The Shield was recently found, restored and is now back as the trophy for the New Year’s Day U12 Ladies match, convincingly won last year by the Lions 43-5.

The U14s Ladies will be competing for the Overton Cup, named in recognition of the contribution of the Overton Family (Kevin and Fiona) to girls’ rugby development in Hong Kong. Last year the Lions won 17-12, whilst at the U16 age group the Lions triumphed 32-19 and took home the Naylor Cup presented by previous Tournament Director Rob Naylor. The U19 Ladies contest for the Lassies Quaich will be between the Overseas Lions v Hong Kong Dragons, with the Dragons team the current holders after a solid 47-0 win last year; the Quaich was presented by long-term supporter of Hong Kong youth rugby Gordon Lamb.

The Waterford Bowl was presented by Mr John Breen in 1983 to be played for by minis under 13 years old. John, an enthusiastic supporter of Hong Kong youth rugby, chose a Waterford Crystal Bowl to reflect his Irish roots, and he

himself presented the beautiful piece each New Year until 1992. Since 1999 this match has been contested by U12 teams from Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula, with the Islanders dominating the honours so far. In 2006 the match was re-branded as “Lions v Dragons”, and the Lions have taken home the silverware on 8 out of the 12. However, the Dragons currently hold the Bowl as they won 25-5 last year.

The Stuart Leckie Cup is competed for in the U14 age group and was first presented by the man himself in 1993. Originally this match was between Hong Kong v Overseas schoolboys, but due to a huge increase in domestic Colts rugby this was changed in 2004 to an Island v Peninsula fixture. In 2006 this too became Lions v Dragons, with the Dragons currently holding the cup, winning 27-17 last year.

The George White Trophy is awarded to the winner of the U16 Hong Kong v Overseas school boys’ fixture. It originates from approximately 1978, and was donated by George White, a New Zealander who played for and coached Hong Kong Football Club, and also

coached the Hong Kong U21 team in 1976.

This has traditionally been a closely contested match, and last year the Hong Kong Dragons beat the Overseas Lions 33-17.

This year sees the fourth edition of the “Jin Si Trophy” match between the U19 Boys Warrior Lions v Dragons. The Warriors programme has been introduced to encourage local player development, and Jin Si is Cantonese for “Warrior Heart”—last year’s encounter was won 27-5 by the Lions.

Traditionally the final match of the day is the U19s Hong Kong v Overseas schoolboys playing for the Middlesex Cup, the trophy that started it all, way back in 1967. It is believed to have first been presented by the Middlesex Regiment, who had a strong wartime connection with Hong Kong. The format has gone from U18 to U19, then to U20 in 2008, and has now returned to U19, picking up an extra piece of silverware along the way—the Wright-Naylor Cup, which was presented by our illustrious previous NYD Tournament Directors. Last year, the Overseas team won a tight tussle 19-17, so the Hong Kong team will be looking for a reversal this time out.

Player Welfare Month Today marks the launch of the Hong Kong Rugby Union’s second ever “Player Welfare Month”, after the incredible success of last year’s initiative that involved activities and events at all age groups, from minis through to senior premiership players, to raise the awareness of mental health and the stigmas surrounding it.

Player Welfare is anything which affects the physical or mental wellbeing of a player. While much attention is paid to physical wellbeing, mental wellbeing is invariably overlooked due to a lack of understanding and the stigma associated with mental illness. HKRU, therefore, feels responsible to provide an environment within our rugby community which nurtures both physical and mental wellbeing, and ensure the highest standards of care is provided to all players.

Mental Wellbeing means feeling good – both about yourself and about the world around you. Good mental health isn’t just the absence of mental health problems, it means being able to get on with life in the way you want. Importantly, evidence shows that there is a link between being physically active and good mental wellbeing.

This year’s Player Welfare campaign is Play SMART, an initiative that will revolve around the acronym for the following:

S – Safeguarding: be physical and emotionally safe

M – Mental Health: feel good about yourself and the world around you A – Away from Injury: learn to prevent injuries

R – Return to Play: follow a safe and effective recovery pathway T – Team Spirit: an important part of a team

The HKRU Player Welfare & Medical Department have helped bring together a strong coalition of NGOs working in this area, all who provide exceptional support and encouragement—Kely Support Group, Samaritans Befrienders HK, MindHK and the HKRU Community Foundation.

With the support of our local NGO’s, HKRU is taking steps to facilitate education and action around this essential part of player welfare and while we have organized an entire month of activities to raise awareness and provide resources, this is a long term commitment and will continue to develop as awareness improves and people start to have conversations about what we can all do to improve mental health.
