Starship China 2016
How China has become the world's largest economy by 'purchasing power parity' is potentially relevant to everybody. Yet, I believe, this idea has not necessarily been given critical artistic representation or attention. Drawing on historical research, I have extracted what I believe to be five key 'acts' in China's meteoric transformation and the consequences inherent in these acts. Being 'absent' as these events occurred and unfolded, I have utilized 'symbolic representation' and 'symbolic objects' to denote these events through the medium of photography. I have chosen to present the images as a series of lightboxes because of the sense of depth they create which as the potential to draw the viewer into the image. Moreover, as a commercial tool, the lightbox seemed especially appropriate to represent China's development into a commercial society. The series of work presented for exhibition, unfold a sequential narrative. The photograph Starship China serves as a prologue to the five acts. The Party is Still in Control, is an epilogue. A series of satellite images 'orbit' each of the five acts, representing the consequences inherent in each act.
