Helen Pun’s art practice explores the relationship between Art and Science through an examination of life experiences and ideas of representation. The interlinked, experimental research-based projects, examine how body movements and surface textures can be used metaphorically to explore the human condition as it experiences changes in space, time and health. The research circles around the idea of the temporality of our bodies, and is largely based on scientific investigation but explored through a fine art practice. Art methodologies and practices are employed to translate these findings and thoughts into metaphoric archetypes. Science and art naturally overlap – both involve ideas, theories and hypothesis that are tested in places where the mind and body come together.
The project “PULSATING ” was developed using a range of materials and processes including; digital prints, sculptures, installation and animation. It seeks to expose both the strengths and vulnerabilities of the human body and indeed the human condition. It draws on the often perceived, conflicting binary distinctions such as; desire and revulsion, and fear and fascination. Ultimately the project engages the idea of the body as a space of hope and resilience.
