HAELSASSANOOF SOMAIPHARMACEU

In an industry where change happens in the blink of an eye, Michael Sassano, CEO of Somai Pharmaceuticals, stands as a beacon of foresight and innovation. Over the past decade, as the cannabis industry has grown from a niche market to a global phenomenon, Sassano’s company has expanded into 12 countries and is on track to enter 20. This kind of international reach is rare in the cannabis space, but Sassano and Somai have mastered the art of navigating complex regulatory landscapes, innovating with products, and making waves in countries where cannabis is still in its infancy. From Lisbon to Bangkok, from Berlin to Sydney, Sassano has a bird’s-eye view of the rapidly evolving global cannabis market—and he’s playing a major role in shaping its future.

TALKSCANNABIS

THE VISION BEHIND SOMAI PHARMACEUTICALS

Somai Pharmaceuticals was built on one fundamental belief: cannabis is not just a commodity, it’s a transformative global medical product. "We’re one of the few groups that have built a true global footprint," Sassano explains. "We’re competing with both big players and local brands on the ground. We’ve cracked the code on how to build cannabis operations that transcend borders."

This global vision is the backbone of Somai’s success. The company is responsible for growing and distributing products for some of the most recognizable cannabis brands, including Cookies, across multiple continents. Somai is known for bringing sought-after products like Cookies to countries such as Germany, the UK, and Australia, while also diversifying its portfolio with vapes, extracts, and other product formats under the APRO brand. "It’s multifaceted," says Sassano, outlining how Somai balances market demand with regulatory challenges in diverse regions. “Our job is to create products that meet the specific needs of each market. It's all about adapting."

GERMANY VS. THE U.S.: THE BATTLE FOR CANNABIS MARKET SUPREMACY

Germany’s medical cannabis market is often discussed as the next big thing, with some predicting it could soon surpass the U.S. in size. But Sassano is more cautious. “Germany will hit a billion this year, but are they going to dethrone the U.S. as the heavyweight champion? I seriously doubt it,” he says. While Germany’s population of 86 million presents huge potential, Sassano points out that the country’s medical market is still relatively new and limited to flower and oral drops. By comparison, the U.S. cannabis market—valued at $34 billion—has a far more sophisticated and diverse product landscape, including tinctures, vapes, and concentrates.

, INNOVAT I O N , AND GLOBALEXPANSION

is clear-eyed about the potential of European markets, but he believes the U.S. will continue to dominate for the foreseeable future, thanks to its scale and consumer sophistication.

AUSTRALIA: THE MOST ADVANCED CANNABIS MARKET

If there’s one market that Sassano is particularly excited about, it’s Australia. "Australia is by far the most advanced in terms of product diversity and accessibility," Sassano says, highlighting the fact that the country boasts over 1,400 cannabis products, from gummies to vapes. Compared to Germany, which still relies heavily on flower, Australia has embraced a much broader range of products, positioning itself as a leader in global cannabis innovation.

This product diversity, Sassano argues, is what sets Australia apart. As the market matures, Somai Pharmaceuticals is focusing heavily on expanding its offerings in Australia and ensuring that it can keep pace with the growing demand for cannabis in all its forms.

NAVIGATING REGULATORY HURDLES

In the world of cannabis, regulatory uncertainty is the constant backdrop. Countries have different rules, different regulations, and different cultural perceptions of cannabis. While some markets are more progressive, others remain incredibly cautious.

Sassano points to Portugal as an example of a market with lenient laws that has allowed Somai to grow and distribute products without the bureaucratic red tape that plagues more restrictive countries. “We have a production facility in Lisbon that grows Cookies exclusively,” says Sassano. The Portuguese facility enables Somai to serve not only local markets but also to ship cannabis products across the European Union.

However, even in countries with more lenient laws, the logistics of exporting narcotics across international borders can be a nightmare.

As the cannabis market matures, Sassano believes extracts will emerge as the next big frontier. “Extracts like tinctures and resins are becoming more common in the medical space,” he says. “Doctors love tinctures because they’re easy to dose. But rosin—especially solventless extracts—is coming on strong.”

Sassano’s company has long focused on creating a diverse portfolio of high-quality cannabis extracts. By staying ahead of these product trends, Somai is positioning itself to lead in an increasingly competitive market.

A FORWARD-LOOKING FUTURE

Looking ahead, Sassano is optimistic about the future of cannabis. With expansion into new markets like Spain, Brazil, and France, he believes Somai Pharmaceuticals is well-positioned to continue its growth. For Sassano, the focus isn’t on geographical expansion, but on reshaping the way cannabis is seen around the world. "It’s not just about where we grow cannabis; it’s about how we bring it to people,” he says with quiet conviction.

As Somai continues to grow, its emphasis on education, product development, and navigating international regulations will be essential. Sassano understands that the future of cannabis isn’t just about growth; it’s about transforming the cannabis space into one that is recognized and respected globally as a legitimate and therapeutic industry.

THE GLOBAL CANNABIS GAME

As a leader in the cannabis industry, Michael Sassano is shaping the future of cannabis across the globe. Whether he’s talking about expanding into new markets, pioneering innovative products, or overcoming regulatory hurdles, it’s clear that Somai Pharmaceuticals is in the driver’s seat of global cannabis expansion.

For Sassano, the journey is far from over. With his forward-thinking leadership, Somai is poised to redefine what it means to be a global cannabis company. If the cannabis industry has taught us anything, it’s that change is constant—and Michael Sassano is ready for it.

"It’s a game of patience,” says Sassano. “Navigating international cannabis laws takes time, especially when it comes to product registration and ensuring everything is compliant.” THE FUTURE OF CANNABIS PRODUCTS: EXTRACTS TAKE CENTER STAGE

One of the group’s initiatives led to the passage of legislation in December 2024 classifying cannabis as an agricultural crop, a landmark step in furthering industry progress. ECMA’s core initiatives focus on creating a level playing field, enforcing compliance to protect consumers, and promoting diversity within the industry.

Kimberly Tanami isn’t just building a cannabis company—she’s setting the standard for how big corporations should behave. She refuses to let corporate greed and bureaucracy crush the small businesses and legacy operators who built this space from the ground up. For her, this isn’t just business—it’s about creating a market where everyone, not just the well-funded few, has a shot at success. It’s about ensuring cannabis remains a force for healing, equity, and economic empowerment. DAN'S DISPATCH: THE ROAD TO SPANNABIS

While California and the United States have been the focal points of cannabis culture for the last few decades, many parts of the world are now adding to the global cannabis community in a significant way. For the weeks leading up to Spannabis, I have been traveling around Europe to meet with the people who are helping to shape the next wave of trends, strains, and products around the world.

In the heart of Barcelona, cannabis culture continues to thrive as one of Europe’s most vibrant and diverse scenes. Spain remains a beacon for cannabis consumers, innovators, and entrepreneurs alike to collaborate. In recent years, private social clubs have become the central hub for cannabis aficionados, with a growing presence of international growers, artists, and brands looking to plant their flags in Barcelona’s fertile ground.

While at most clubs flower takes up the majority of the menu, the thing being smoked the most is traditionally made, old-school hash. High quality live rosin of flavors like Grape Gas and Red Tiger (a selection of Exotic²) remain some of the most sought after and rare products in the underground. However Moroccan hash, which becomes abundant after the annual harvest, is a relatively inexpensive product.

The Emerging Medical Markets

While many US strains and flavors have been at the top of every stoner’s list for years, brands like Compound Genetics and Khalifa Kush are starting to show up in medical markets across the globe. Through Germany has received most of the attention recently, Australia and Israel are starting to introduce US brands that want to have a greater international presence. Despite being still in the early stages, US brands and companies have begun working more collaboratively with medical farms across the globe to ensure the highest quality product is achieved.

Although most medical producers and brands are focused on flower, we are starting to see products like live resin and rosin being produced at a high quality through collaborations between medical producers and American hash makers and brands.

While many companies based in the US are just now considering getting into the global medical markets, some legacy European operators have already taken the leap.

EU Legacy Market Joins Regulated Cannabis

Karma Genetics is one of the most well known breeders from Europe, who for years had been focused on flavor and effect. While he began his career on the underground and on the forums, his time is now split between running a licensed cultivation facility in the Netherlands and his breeding and selection work

Spannabis 2025: The World Stage

In addition to the annual Spannabis events like Masters of Rosin, Ego Clash, and Full Moon Sesh, this year you will see events that bridge the gap between US and Spanish cannabis culture. On Wednesday March 12th, Compound Genetics is collaborating with Greenardo, one of the original Barcelona social clubs, to feature all things Grape Gas. This will highlight live rosin from Feeling Frosty alongside Grape Gas static from Morocco.

Even with the American competition, there are several local producers who have some absolutely can’t miss product. Lady Diana from The Ethereal Tree is one of those strains. It is an incredibly gassy strain with ultra potent smoke, reminiscent of Sour Diesel in effect that got me old school stoned. Red Tiger, a pheno of Exotic², is also an intense smoke with sweet tropical terps From Sativa Engineering. A true micro craft grower and hash maker, he delivers phenomenal quality to the market every time.

While American cannabis culture still leads the charge, it is impossible to ignore the burgeoning community of passionate and dedicated people who are looking to hone their craft and bring fire to people around the world. Although the industry continues to evolve and take shape, cannabis for both medical and recreational use continues to become more broadly accepted. With less than 5% of the world having access to regulated cannabis, we are still in the early days of the global cannabis trade, and we are very excited about where it is heading.

The High ArT of fullMoon SeSh:

Live and Let Blaze, Igor talks The Global Scene

As the founder of FullMoon Sesh, Igor isn’t just leading a cannabis event series—he’s reshaping the fabric of cannabis culture by creating a movement. One that fuses the art of cannabis with creativity, culture, and global community. From its humble beginnings to becoming a landmark event with international influence, FullMoon Sesh is more than just a competition—it’s a celebration of everything cannabis represents, from the craft to the culture and the people. His vision transcends just the high and pushes boundaries of what cannabis can mean in a world that’s just beginning to understand its potential.

A VISION BORN FROM REBELLION

Igor’s story began in Slovakia, a place where cannabis wasn’t just illegal—it was actively demonized. Growing up, he saw the plant as something more than a recreational escape. "It wasn’t just illegal. It was persecuted," he recalls. "I was an outsider in my own country for wanting to explore it."

His early experiences with cannabis were underground. “I started with weed young. It wasn’t fancy—just aluminum foil, plastic bottles.” It wasn’t about getting high for Igor—it was about breaking free from the systems that suppressed curiosity. His path led him to Spain, where he co-founded a cannabis association group, eventually setting the stage for what would become FullMoon Sesh.

“I saw cannabis as a way to challenge the status quo,” he said, “and that’s still at the heart of what we do with FullMoon Sesh.”

FULLMOON SESH: CRAFT, COMMUNITY, AND CREATIVITY

FullMoon Sesh isn’t the typical cannabis competition. Rather than focusing on product quantity or celebrity endorsements, Igor envisioned a space where creativity and craftsmanship would reign. “We didn’t want to create just another cannabis cup,” he explained. “It’s about bringing together artists, growers, hash makers, and people who understand the depth of cannabis as a culture and a craft.”

Each FullMoon Sesh event is a celebration of artistry— from the hand-blown glass pieces to the top-tier concentrates and meticulously grown flowers. It’s a place where cannabis is treated like an art form, and the community is centered around mutual respect for quality and creativity.

“We wanted to do something that felt more like a gallery opening than a trade show,” Igor continued. "Where the products are the art, but also where people are there to exchange ideas. It’s about connection— between creators, between the audience, and between different parts of the world."

A GLOBAL MOVEMENT: BRINGING FULLMOON SESH TO THE WORLD

Since its inception in Spain, FullMoon Sesh has quickly expanded into a global phenomenon, with events held across Europe, the U.S., and Asia. From Las Palmas to Los Angeles, and from Berlin to Bangkok, the brand has set the stage for cannabis culture to evolve on an international scale.

For Igor, each event feels like a unique chapter in an ongoing story. “Spain was a standout for us. The energy there was incredible,” he said. “But Bangkok? That was something else. It was 10 days of non-stop sessions. People came from all over. It wasn’t just about cannabis—it was about culture, connection, and energy.”

FullMoon Sesh’s international appeal lies in its ability to create a space where local cannabis communities feel seen and heard, while also drawing in people from all walks of life. “It’s not just about smoking weed. It’s about uniting people from different corners of the globe under a common love for the plant,” Igor says.

CANNABIS AS A GATEWAY TO CREATIVITY

One of Igor’s most compelling philosophies is that cannabis isn’t just a product—it’s a tool for creativity. For him, the plant unlocks new possibilities, whether it’s in the art of glassblowing, hash-making, or music production. “Cannabis amplifies creativity,” he says. “It’s what draws so many artists to it. Whether you’re a painter, a designer, or a musician, cannabis opens up new ways of thinking.”

This belief extends beyond just consumption—it’s evident in the FullMoon Sesh experience, where artistry and innovation are on full display. At every event, the connection between cannabis and art is emphasized, whether it’s in the form of intricate glass pieces or the curated designs that surround the event.

Igor’s dedication to this artistic vision is also reflected in the carefully selected brands and products featured at FullMoon Sesh. “We work with the best,” he says. “From solventless concentrates to the finest glass artists like Mothership, we’re showcasing the very best of cannabis craftsmanship.”

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE: CANNABIS, CREATIVITY, AND NEW FRONTIERS

As FullMoon Sesh continues to grow, Igor’s ambitions extend beyond even the most ambitious cannabis event. His vision for the future is nothing short of groundbreaking. “In five years, I want FullMoon Sesh to be a global institution,” he says with conviction.

“Think Art Basel, but for cannabis. A place where art, culture, and the plant collide on a global stage.”

But Igor’s aspirations don’t stop at Earth. “Cannabis in space? That’s the dream,” he said. “Why not? We have the technology to send things to Mars, and we’ve already got the cannabis to do it. FullMoon Sesh could be the first event to send dabs to space. Elon Musk has the rockets, and I’ve got the vision.”

He continues, “I want to dab on the moon. Why stop at Mars? Imagine the first full moon sesh on the moon— dab pens floating in zero gravity, glass rigs that can’t tip over… it’s the next frontier. Maybe we’ll even get a space station event going. The possibilities are limitless.”

THE HIGH ART OF FULLMOON SESH

At its core, FullMoon Sesh is more than just an event— it’s a cultural shift. It celebrates cannabis as high art, exploring its potential as a medium for creativity, connection, and community. For Igor, it’s not about building a business; it’s about leading a movement that redefines cannabis culture for the modern world.

“We’re creating something bigger than an event, FullMoon Sesh embodies what cannabis represents— art, community, creativity, and quality.”

As the cannabis industry evolves, FullMoon Sesh is poised to remain at the forefront of the revolution. Whether pushing cultural boundaries or aiming for the stars, one thing is certain: Igor’s journey is just beginning, and the world will be watching.

Scott Deppe of MOTHERSHIP GLASS:

DIAMONDS ARE FOR DABBERS, THE ART OF GLASSBLOWING.

Photo Credits: Lucas Reilly and Mothership Glass

When it comes to the world of cannabis culture, one name rises above the rest like a smooth, iridescent bubble caught mid-spin: Scott Deppe. The founder and visionary behind Mothership Glass has been shaping the cannabis experience for nearly two decades, transforming the humble dab rig from functional tool to fine art. Scott’s rise is the story of a true craftsman, one who turned passion into innovation and has shaped how the world enjoys hash, one hit at a time.

Dabbing Through the Years: The Genesis of a Glass Pioneer

Before he was blowing glass that would become the stuff of legends, Scott was like many others— a lover of cannabis who sought out a better way to consume it. His journey into the world of hash began in the late ‘90s, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing. “We were still smoking out of crappy pieces,” Scott said. “This was way before the dab craze, before people even knew what a low-temp hit was. You’d heat up some knives, get your hash, and hope for the best.”

It was the dawn of the dab era—a time when hash was still in the “niche” category, and most folks were still learning how to handle this potent form of cannabis. But Scott didn’t stop at making do with what was available. He envisioned a better way to dab, one that didn’t scorch your throat or leave you choking on harsh smoke. He wanted something cleaner, smoother, and ultimately more enjoyable.

As he began to explore the world of glass-blowing, it

quickly became clear that Scott wasn’t just dabbling in a hobby. This was a calling. Mothership was born out of a deep-rooted desire to make the ultimate dab rig— something both functional and artistic.

The Low-Temp Dab: Scott’s Signature Move

Mothership didn’t become a household name overnight. It was Scott’s unique approach to the art of dabbing that set him apart. In those early years, most smokers would heat up their nails to red-hot temperatures, essentially vaporizing hash at a high temp, destroying much of its delicate flavor profile. Scott had a different idea. What if you could preserve those flavors, unlocking the full potential of the hash, while keeping things smooth and easy on the throat?

This was the “low-temp dab” moment—the breakthrough that changed everything.

Scott recalls, “It started when I was messing around with a Honey Bucket rig, and I thought, 'What if I cap this and slow down the airflow?' That was the lightbulb moment. Suddenly, I could taste the hash in a way I’d

never experienced before. It was cleaner, smoother. The terps were more vibrant.”

This discovery not only changed the way Scott smoked, but it also set the standard for what the ideal dab should be: flavorful, smooth, and easy on the lungs. Over time, that innovation became a hallmark of Mothership’s designs.

Glass as Art: Mothership’s Masterpieces

For Scott, glass isn’t just a medium—it’s a canvas. He’s been creating rigs that are as much about craftsmanship as they are about consumption, blending art and function in ways no one had thought possible. From recycler rigs to slurpers that spin and whirl with every dab, each piece he makes is a work of art in motion.

“I’m not just thinking about the function,” he said. “I want to create something that people will appreciate on all levels—the visual, the tactile, the functional. A good piece should be something you can hold in your hand, admire, and also use every day.”

And use they do. Mothership’s rigs have become iconic. The brand is known for its impeccable craftsmanship and forward-thinking designs. The sacred geometry perks in the glass, the intricate honeycomb patterns, and the flawless recyclers make each piece not only a tool for consumption but a statement in itself.

mothershipglass.com @mothership_glass

Scott Deppe’s impact on the cannabis community is undeniable. Through Mothership Glass, he has not only changed the way we dab but also elevated the experience itself into something that merges artistry, science, and community. Whether you’re hitting a piece at a dab bar or showcasing one of his rigs at home, you’re part of something bigger—an everevolving culture that Scott helped shape from the ground up. As cannabis culture continues to evolve, we know one thing for sure: Scott Deppe is a name that will continue to define the world of glass. And as long as he’s around, dabbing will never be the same again.

A Revolution, One Dab at a Time

He’s also working on building a breeding facility for cannabis seeds, focused on creating strains that highlight the most flavorful terpene profiles. But for Scott, it’s all about balance—combining his passion for glass with his love for cannabis cultivation.

So what’s next for Scott and Mothership Glass? The future looks brighter than ever, with Scott planning to expand his glass school and cultivate new talent. His goal isn’t just to create more rigs but to inspire a new generation of artists and innovators in the world of cannabis. "I want to teach the next wave of glassblowers, give them the tools and skills to make their own mark in this world," Scott explains. "It's about giving back to the community and ensuring the culture thrives."

What’s Next? The Future of Mothership Glass

As Scott’s glasswork continues to reach new heights, so too does the love for hash and dabbing around the world. Over the years, Scott has taken Mothership Glass across the globe, spreading the culture of the perfect dab. His presence at cannabis events—from judging cannabis cups in Berlin to hosting dab bars in Buenos Aires—has helped introduce a new generation to the art of fine hash consumption.Scott’s goal is clear: he wants to give people the experience of tasting hash in its purest, most enjoyable form. Whether he's in a workshop in Oregon or leading a demonstration at an international cannabis conference, his mission remains the same. "It's all about showing people the best possible way to consume cannabis, while respecting the plant and the process," he says.

The Global Impact: Spreading the Culture

In the world of cannabis, where growth is often measured by profit margins, true mastery goes beyond numbers—it’s about crafting experiences and flavors that resonate deeply within the culture and its consumers. The Duke of Doja, also known as Rusty, alchemizes cannabis cultivation into an art form, blending decades of experience with cutting-edge techniques to create some of the most sought-after strains on the market. As a master grower, breeder, and visionary, The Duke of Erb is about what cannabis can be, from the roots to the smoke. Alongside Ryan Bartholomew - Ryan, who co-founded iconic California-based cannabis brand Doja - they combine their shared passion for breeding and cultivating that elevates the industry to new highs.

SCALING UP: PRECISION AND PASSION AT DOJA

The Duke’s approach to cannabis cultivation is grounded in precision. While many envision cannabis cultivation as a small, quaint operation, he and Ryan are revolutionizing the industry by scaling up without sacrificing quality. A state-of-the-art facility in Sacramento that they utilize, which houses over 3,000 lights, is a testament to their commitment to growth at scale. “It’s about full control,” Rusty notes.

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE LAND OF

Rusty’s story began before cannabis went mainstream, when cultivation was still largely underground. “I’ve been in the game a long time,” he said. “Started in the mid-90s, and it was a completely different world back then.” After moving to California, The cannabis pioneer experienced the evolving landscape of cannabis cultivation, navigating through the complex web of ever-changing regulations

“Each county has its own vibe. El Dorado County was no cakewalk, but we stayed ahead of the curve.” Despite the challenges and constant evolution of cannabis politics, his resilience and drive kept

MARTIAL ARTS TO CANNABIS: SHAPING A MASTER’S PATH

Before becoming the Duke of Doja, Rusty was a national martial arts champion and a fourth-degree black belt in karate. Martial arts was his focus and escape, until he was badly injured.

“I got my orbital nerve really messed up when I was helping a friend get ready for a fight, and so then I was like, well, maybe I should just pretty much focus on cannabis for employment and I’ll just

The injury has caused irreversible damage and pain, which affected Rusty’s physical capabilities, including being unable to continue practicing martial arts at the same level.

“The only thing you can do is keep pushing forward,” he says, a sentiment that drives him throughout his cannabis career. He met Ryan Bartholomew in the early 2010s and created a powerful synergy, both recognized for their excellence and innovation.

“Environment, genetics, everything dialed in. Bigger doesn’t mean compromising on quality—it means more room to experiment and push boundaries.” For Rusty, scaling up is not just about growing more; it’s about cultivating better, creating an environment where every variable—from temperature to light cycles—is optimized for perfection.

THE ART AND SCIENCE OF PHENO HUNTING

Rusty is a master of pheno-hunting, a meticulous process of selecting the perfect plant from hundreds or thousands based on potency, flavor, yield, and resistance to pests. “Pheno hunting is an art form,” he explained.

“You’re looking for that one plant that has it all.” The Duke’s attention to detail and commitment to perfecting every aspect of the plant—temperature, humidity, light cycles—are what set him apart as a true craftsman. For him, pheno-hunting is akin to being a winemaker or chef, creating a product that resonates with the senses in ways that few others can replicate. “It’s about creating a masterpiece—something that people will remember,” he says.

FLAVOR IS KING: CRAFTING UNFORGETTABLE STRAINS

In today’s cannabis world, where potency often takes the spotlight, Rusty’s focus is squarely on flavor.

“Potency matters, but it’s the flavor profile that sets a strain apart,” he says. For The Duke of Doja, flavor is what makes cannabis an experience—an unforgettable moment that lingers long after the smoke has settled. “While we will always love and appreciate classic flavors like gas, and will continue to put effort into creating seeds that provide access to those, our primary focus is on isolating new profiles. We aim to develop profiles that are even more mouthcoating and flavorful than the titans of the past. This will allow us to expand our menu of top-tier varieties and, eventually, offer them as clones to the public as well.”

“Something that leaves an impression.” His passion fort terpenes— the aromatic compounds responsible for a strain’s flavor—helps Doja stand out in a crowded market. Every strain they cultivate is designed to offer complexity, with rich, mouth-coating terpenes that evoke memories and experiences, all while ensuring potent effects.

PRESERVING LEGENDARY GENETICS

His commitment to cannabis genetics goes beyond just creating new strains. Rusty is a guardian of legacy genetics, working to preserve the classics while also pushing the envelope with new projects. “OG Kush and Sour Diesel are classics, but genetics are disappearing every day,” he says. “We have to protect the ones that are worth saving.”

The Champion Grower’s latest project, crossing the legendary SFV OG with Peachtree Reversal Pollen, promises to produce a strain that exemplifies everything cannabis enthusiasts love about the “gas” flavor.

But Rusty’s gaze is always on the future. “With genetics like the Haley’s Comet cut—originally a bag seed from Washington Heights, NY, that was popped and mothered by @whateverthatscool 15 years ago—@lexters_daboratory passed it to @breathefree222_ in Boston, who then shared it with me. This lineage ensures that Doja will remain at the forefront of cannabis innovation.”

THE GLOBAL REACH AND FUTURE OF DOJA

The Duke of Doja’s influence has spread far beyond California. Today, Doja’s genetics are shared worldwide, with partnerships in Europe and an ever-growing global fanbase. “We’re just getting started,” Rusty says. “We’ve got new varieties in the works that will push the limits of flavor and potency. We’re always looking ahead.”

With plans to expand their operations further, The Cannabis Pioneer and Ryan are determined to continue shaping the future of cannabis with integrity and precision.

“This isn’t just about business for us. It’s about creating experiences that people will remember. It’s about the connections, the community, and the memories people make along the way.”

For The Duke of Doja, cannabis is his life’s work. “We’re building something lasting here. And I’ll keep going as long as I can.”

As the cannabis industry continues to evolve, Rusty and Ryan will undoubtedly remain at the forefront, pushing the boundaries of the highest standards of cultivation and commitment to excellence, leaving a lasting legacy.

WHEN YOU THINK OF CANNABIS BRANDS THAT HAVE BROKEN THROUGH TO THE MAINSTREAM, DOJA STANDS OUT AS ONE OF THE TOP NAMES. BEHIND THE BRAND IS A JOURNEY SHAPED BY DECADES OF CULTIVATION, BREEDING, AND EVOLUTION. WE SAT DOWN WITH RYAN BARTHOLOMEW—KNOWN AS DOJA—TO DISCUSS HIS PERSONAL JOURNEY, THE ART OF BREEDING, AND THE FUTURE OF HIS BRAND.

FROM CAMDEN

TO CALIFORNIA: A JOURNEY FUELED BY PASSION

Ryan's story began in Camden, New Jersey, with a childhood marked by constant moves. Despite this, cannabis was always a constant. His first encounter with the plant came in 1998 in Fort Worth, Texas, where cannabis became a rite of passage for him and his friends. It was this early experience that set him on a path to becoming a key figure in the cannabis industry. After bouncing between Texas and California, Ryan eventually settled in Los Angeles, where he found the ideal combination of culture, networking, and perfect weather. “LA is home,” he says, crediting the city’s international networking opportunities and infrastructure for his success.

CRAFTING GENETICS: THE HEART OF DOJA’S SUCCESS

Today, Ryan is recognized as a pioneer in cannabis genetics. Doja is known for their cultivation and mainstreaming of RS 11, Giraffe Pussy, and Permanent Marker, all strains that came from other colleagues. Today Doja is only working with proprietary genetics and creating iconic strains all their own like Peach Tree. The key to their success was a collaborative partnership with Rusty, known as Duke of Erb, a breeder he’s worked with since 2012. In 2020, they began their venture into seed production and genetic development.

Ryan’s breeding philosophy is simple: he’s focused on crafting unique, innovative strains that stand out in a crowded market. “I’m looking for things we haven’t seen before,” he says. Doja's breeding program seeks to create strains that break away from the norm and surprise even the most seasoned cannabis connoisseurs. The focus is on high-flavor, mouth-coating strains like Papaya Mosa and Peach Tree, all while ensuring the overall smoking experience is smooth, not harsh.

THE DOJA BRAND: NAVIGATING THE NEW CANNABIS LANDSCAPE

As the cannabis industry evolved, so did Doja. Ryan attributes much of its success to being part of the first wave of brands that embraced social media and digital marketing. “We’ve been working for close to 10 years. It’s a combination of a strong internet presence and innovative thinking that got us where we are,” he explains. But marketing alone isn’t what propelled Doja to the top; it’s their commitment to producing some of the best cannabis genetics available. “What we’re doing with Rusty now is next to none. No one else is doing what we’re doing. We’re pushing the envelope in a way that hasn’t been seen before.”

TRANSITION

For Doja, the cannabis industry’s transition from illicit to legal markets mirrors the historical shift of alcohol post-prohibition. "It’s not going to be right now, but I think all the markets are going to succeed in the end," he says, drawing parallels to the challenges faced by alcohol during its own legal transition. He’s keenly aware of the hurdles legal cannabis faces, from over-taxation to high barriers of entry. "The black market thrives in certain aspects because they set up these

really high barriers of entry,” he explains. But he believes the tide will eventually turn as younger generations, who’ve never known cannabis as illegal, come of age. "Eventually, it's going to be the norm to get your weed through legal channels," he predicts, with the market settling into a regulated, sustainable model.

Despite the inevitability of larger corporations dominating the space, Doja remains confident in his ability to compete. "The MSOs have to play on our field," he asserts, emphasizing that his expertise in cannabis will always give him an edge over businesses with deep pockets. While big brands might try to undercut him with lower prices, Doja knows that quality will always win. "Can they throw hits with me in the ring? I’ve been doing this my whole life," he says, confident in his ability to deliver top-tier product. As the industry grows, he faces the challenge of maintaining that quality while scaling up his operations. "The challenge I’m up against right now is to really compete on this level," he admits, underscoring his dedication to not just riding the wave of brand hype but to mastering the craft of cannabis at every level.

THE FUTURE: VERTICAL INTEGRATION AND INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION

Ryan’s plans for Doja’s future are ambitious. He envisions a single-source cultivation facility for quality control, ensuring the same premium product while scaling operations. But it’s not just about California—Doja is expanding internationally. The brand has already made its mark in Australia, and Ryan is focused on growing in markets like Germany, Portugal, and the UK. “We’ve taken control of a facility in Portugal to help facilitate UK medical markets,” he shares. Domestically, Doja is also expanding in states like Florida, New York, and Michigan.

PARTNERSHIPS: TRUST AND INTEGRITY

In an industry where shady business deals are common, Ryan’s approach to partnerships is rooted in trust. “You’ve got to select your partners carefully,” he says, emphasizing the importance of working with people you know and trust. His philosophy centers on integrity and transparency, staying close-knit with his team and partners to maintain control and authenticity.

A LEGACY IN THE MAKING

Ryan's vision for Doja goes beyond selling cannabis; it’s about redefining what cannabis can be. He’s not interested in following trends; he wants to create something new and groundbreaking. “I’m here to shape the future,” he says. This drive is reflected in the unique genetic projects he’s working on, which are pushing the boundaries of what cannabis can offer. From perfecting the Peach Tree Reversal project to enhancing gas-heavy varieties, Ryan’s goal is to craft a sensory experience that transforms the way people view cannabis.

NEW STRAINS, NO LIMITS

For Doja, the hunt for cannabis genetics is all about finding the unexpected. "I’m looking for

outliers," he says, emphasizing his love for the unique and unexplored. "I like to gravitate toward the one in the pack that's way different from everything else." He thrives on discovering traits that defy expectations, often finding himself fascinated by those plants that don’t quite fit in. "There’s been times where I’m like, 'Yo, are you sure you didn’t mix this one up? This isn’t something else,'" he laughs, adding that the mystery of these genetic anomalies keeps him coming back. His drive for innovation leads him to select rare, high-terpene varieties that stand out in both flavor and potency.

Doja’s focusing on "mouth coating, unique flavors, exotic fruits, new forms of gas"—elements that will set his genetics apart. With strains like the Papaya Mosa and Peach Tree, which he calls some of the "highest flavor intensity" in the market, Doja is carving out a new frontier in cannabis. By crossing familiar varieties with "more interesting things," he’s paving the way for the next generation of approachable yet groundbreaking strains.

A GLOBAL VISION: PORTUGAL, THAILAND, AND BEYOND

Ryan’s sights are set on the global stage, particularly in markets like Portugal and Thailand. He envisions Doja becoming as synonymous with quality as California wines are with Bordeaux. “California’s cannabis will be like Bordeaux wine,” he notes, seeing the potential for Doja to become a household name worldwide. With ongoing global expansion plans and a deep focus on genetic innovation, Doja’s future is looking brighter than ever.

SPREADING SEEDS, SHARING THE LOVE

For Doja, nothing beats the thrill of seeing his California cannabis genetics grow in the hands of people across the globe. "The coolest thing you can do is to take part in some creation of some genetics," he says, his passion clear. "I’m trying to spread ‘em all over the world and let people pop 'em in every different region and find their own phenotypes." His international trips aren’t just for expanding his brand— they’re about nurturing a global network of growers, especially in Europe, where his strains are becoming increasingly popular.

“The real reward comes when they bring ‘em to me and show ‘em to me, and it’s lit,” Doja says, a grin in his voice. For him, it’s not about the sales or the recognition—it’s the excitement of seeing how his seeds evolve in different environments.

“It’s like handing someone a gift, and then they bring it back a year later with their own twist. That’s the dopest thing.” It's a personal and fulfilling connection to his work, one where the legacy of his cannabis empire is built not just on business, but on a shared love of creation and discovery.

ALWAYS EVOLVING, ALWAYS INNOVATING

Doja isn’t just about following trends—it’s about shaping them. With Ryan at the helm, the brand is focused on creating new experiences and pushing the limits of what cannabis can offer. As Ryan’s journey continues, it’s clear that Doja’s evolution is far from over. With a commitment to authenticity, genetic innovation, and global expansion, Ryan’s legacy is being built, one strain at a time.

Rewriting the Rules of Cannabis with Loyalty, Vision, and Innovation

If you know, you know—Cali Paid (CP) and Doja’s partnership doesn’t need much introduction. Their journey has been about passion, loyalty, and making power moves in the cannabis world. It all started back in 2018, when CP first met Ryan Bartholomew in Sacramento. From the jump, they clicked, realizing that their shared passion for cannabis was matched only by their loyalty to each other.

For the next six years, their friendship grew, with both making moves in the cannabis industry—just like Ronaldo and Messi making an impact in football. No matter what they did, they were making noise and pushing boundaries.

In 2023, CP saw a gap in the medical cannabis market.

“Hey bro, I can see something happening in the medical market,” CP said to Ryan. “With our knowledge, genetics, and market dominance, we can solve the biggest problem in the medical world—quality.” Ryan instantly knew CP was onto something. “I had no doubt that CP would deliver with the utmost transparency and standards,” he said.

Fast forward to now, and the pair have done something no California rec brand has ever done—entering the global medical cannabis market. It’s been a long and difficult journey, but it’s paying off. With the first rollout of their medical product, people are already saying, “Wow, if this hits the medical market, it’s a game changer.” The buzz is spreading, with others sharing their excitement on social media.

CP’s standards are some of the highest seen in the industry, and with Doja’s proprietary strains and market dominance, the duo is set to raise the bar for medical cannabis worldwide. The launch of their new GACP cultivation facility in Portugal is just the beginning.

As Cali Paid and Doja continue to roll out to new countries, one thing is clear: the cannabis industry is in for a shift. With unmatched loyalty, high standards, and a focus on quality, CP is ready to redefine what medical cannabis can be.

FROM EUROPE WITH LOVE

Ciarán O'Leary's journey through the cannabis industry is nothing short of unconventional. Starting out in the vibrant nightlife scene of Amsterdam, Ciarán dove deep into cannabis culture working at The Bulldog, one of the city's most iconic coffee shops. “It was the perfect introduction to everything—regulations, customer service, and the culture that surrounded cannabis. It was real, hands-on experience,” he says. Originally from Ireland, he’d never imagined his career would lead him to the heart of Amsterdam’s cannabis scene, but once he was in, there was no turning back.

Now based in Barcelona, Ciarán’s become a key player in bridging the

CI ARÁN

O'LEARY

cannabis worlds of Europe and the U.S. “Europe has so much to offer when it comes to cannabis,” he explains. “But people are overlooking it. The U.S. market is huge, and it’s time for European brands to make their mark.” For Ciarán, it’s all about helping these brands find their footing on a global scale—something he’s done with notable brands like Doja and Cookies.

With Doja, for example, he’s helped the brand expand into Europe, making sure they stayed authentic while still scaling up. "Doja really gets it. They’re all about quality and culture, and that resonates with me," Ciarán says. "That’s how you build something sustainable— not by chasing trends, but by understanding market dynamics and staying true to who you are."

Then there’s Cookies. Ciarán played a big part in opening the first Cookies store in Barcelona, a moment he calls a milestone in his career. "Cookies is massive. To help them expand into Europe, into a city like Barcelona, with its deep cannabis roots, was huge." He pauses. “It was a game-changer.”

But Ciarán’s not just focused on the now—he’s got his eye on the future. While Europe’s regulatory environment still lags behind the U.S., he’s optimistic. “It’s slow, but every step counts,” he says. “We’ve learned a lot from the U.S. about how to build a solid framework. And now, it’s just a matter of time before Europe catches up.”

For Ciarán, though, the real magic is in medical cannabis. "Recreational is important, but the real expansion, the real potential, is in medical cannabis," he says with conviction. “Once Europe sorts its medical cannabis infrastructure, that’s when things will really take off.”

His career’s been shaped by a singular goal: to build lasting, meaningful businesses in an industry that was once on the fringes. "Cannabis is no longer this underground thing," he notes. "It’s moving into the mainstream, and we need to treat it with the seriousness it deserves. This is a legitimate business."

And that’s exactly what Ciarán’s doing: helping brands grow in both recreational and medical markets, navigating the complexities of regulation, and positioning cannabis as more than just a product, but a legitimate part of the global healthcare conversation. “It’s going to take time,” he says, "but we’re heading in the right direction."

Through his strategic approach, Ciarán’s ensuring the brands he works with are set up for the long haul—built to thrive in emerging markets and established ones. "The future is bright," he says. "I’ll be here, working to make that happen."

The Mechanics Farm

NUTS AND BOLTS OF CULTIVATING THE HIGHEST GENETICS

Chris, the mastermind behind The Mechanics Farm, is fine-tuning the cannabis game like a high-performance engine. From his Long Island roots, Chris shifted gears from wrenching on cars to cultivating elite cannabis. Partnering with Ryan Bartholomew of Doja in 2022, Chris hit the accelerator with strains like Runtz BX1 and Soap x Blueberry Mimosa. His Cherry Runtz drop sold out in

three hours, a perfect proof of concept. With his eye always on the next upgrade, Chris is pumping out proper gear like Zelium and Peach Tree and, proving that New York can compete with California in the cannabis race. He’s not just building a business—he’s creating a legacy, one strain at a time, and he’s in it for the long haul, shifting the gears of East Coast cannabis.

“We hunted through the Cherry Runtz and found a keeper that became the cornerstone of our line, We also created ‘Zelium,’ which is now one of New York’s most requested strains.”

"People need to know that we can grow this here, and it can be just as good as anything out West. it’s all about pushing the culture forward."
"Peach

Tree was a tricky one, She’s a picky plant— delicate and temperamental. We had to take extra care, lowering the lights and adjusting our approach. But when it came together, it was spectacular. Even Rusty was impressed."

In the rapidly expanding world of cannabis, where trends and technologies evolve faster than the smoke rings at a concert, a new startup is setting itself apart by merging cutting-edge technology with the art of precise cannabis dosing. Meet ROCA, a groundbreaking startup founded by Ram Solell and David Apfelbaum, both driven by personal experiences and a shared vision of revolutionizing how the world consumes cannabis.

Launched in 2023, Roca is not just another cannabis company—it’s a game-changer. Roca produces an infused paper (that you can roll up and smoke by itself!), customizable down to the dosage, strain, terpene profile, and branding.

A PERSONAL MISSION AND THE BIRTH OF ROCA

Solell’s entry into the world of medical cannabis wasn’t motivated by business ambitions—it was born from his own struggle with chronic pain. A motorcycle accident left him with lasting nerve damage, and for years, cannabis provided much-needed relief. But Solell, a seasoned industrial designer, found himself frustrated with the inconsistency of the products available to him in Israel’s highly regulated medical cannabis market. “After using the same strain for years, I suddenly found it wasn’t available anymore. The dosage was all over the place, and that created a lot of anxiety for me,” says Solell.

It was this personal dilemma that sparked the idea for Roca. Solell teamed up with Apfelbaum, a childhood friend, and corporate lawyer-turned-VC (Venture Capital) Investor-turned-CEO with a shared passion for cannabis, and together they set out to create a more consistent, reliable cannabis product. The solution? A precision-engineered, cannabis-infused paper that could be dosed with exact accuracy, offering patients and consumers alike complete control and personalization over their experience.

“We’re solving real problems. People deserve more than just a ‘weed experience.’ They deserve a consistent, thoughtful, and safe experience every time.”

What’s even more unique? You can smoke it clean, without the need to add flower, as an extract only, 100% natural hemp paper delivery-vehicle, just grab one (Roca Rolling Paper) flat out of your pocket, roll and spark up.

In December 2024, Roca obtained full approval from Nevada’s Cannabis Compliance Board (CCB) to be listed as a new consumer goods category - “paper based vaporizer.”

A NEW ERA OF CANNABIS CONSUMPTION

Unlike traditional pre-rolls, which rely on loosely packed flower or sprayed extracts that burn inconsistently, Roca’s precision infused paper offers a completely controlled and customizable experience. “Each sheet of our paper is infused with a consistent amount of cannabis extract—up to 300 milligrams of THC,” says Solell. Whether you’re looking for a light buzz or a potent high, you can customize your dose, taking the guesswork out of consumption. With Roca’s innovative design, every puff is a deliberate, controlled experience.

But Roca’s approach doesn’t stop at flat sheets of cannabis-infused paper. The company is preparing to roll out pre-rolls, offering an even more convenient way to enjoy a controlled experience without the need for extra equipment or preparation like concentrates. The possibilities are endless as the company scales and expands its offerings.

TECHNOLOGY MEETS CANNABIS: CRAFTING A LONGER

LASTING, SMOOTHER, COOLER BURN

Roca’s technology is a marriage of innovation and simplicity, with Solell’s background in 3D printing taking center stage. The cannabis-infused paper isn’t just about delivering extract—it’s designed to optimize the burn rate and heat distribution, ensuring a smooth, even smoking experience. Unlike the rapid burn of traditional pre-rolls, Roca’s paper offers a gradual release of cannabis, which means users get a steady, predictable effect every time.

“What we’re doing is creating a precision experience that’s been lacking in the industry,” explains Apfelbaum. By carefully designing the paper’s properties and geometry, the burn rate is regulated, giving users more control over their consumption and a more enjoyable experience overall.

BEYOND ISRAEL: EXPANDING TO GLOBAL MARKETS

While Roca’s roots are in Tel-Aviv, Israel, the company has quickly set its sights on international markets, including the United States, which boasts one of the largest and most diverse cannabis markets in the world. “We’ve seen incredible success in places like Las Vegas, where our first batch sold out. Now we’re moving forward with demos in Colorado, and additional states,” shares Apfelbaum. Roca is available at Oasis Dispensary in Las Vegas. (@oasisdispensary)

But Roca’s vision extends far beyond the U.S. With an eye on Europe, Roca aims to offer its innovative solution to a global audience. “The world is ready for this kind of innovation, and we’re here to bring it to the people who need it most,” says Apfelbaum.

A COMMITMENT TO INTEGRITY

In an industry often criticized for inconsistency and a lack of transparency, Roca’s co-founders are committed to doing things differently. Their focus on quality, precision, and reliability sets them apart. “We’re not here to ride trends,” Solell says. “We’re solving real problems. People deserve more than just a ‘weed experience.’ They deserve a consistent, thoughtful, and safe experience every time.”

This commitment to integrity is evident not only in Roca’s products but also in their partnerships. Roca has garnered support from Israel’s Innovation Authority, which provided a $0.5M non-dilutive grant to support their research and development towards creating their novel 100% paper-based, cannabis-extract delivery vehicle. “It’s rare for a cannabis-related company to receive this kind of recognition, especially in Israel, but it speaks volumes about the potential impact of our technology,” Solell adds. THE FUTURE OF CANNABIS: PRECISION,

PERSONALIZATION, AND PARTNERSHIPS

Roca’s disruptive approach isn’t just about creating a new product—it’s about reshaping the entire cannabis consumption experience. The company’s long-term vision is to become a platform for other cannabis brands, empowering them with precision technology and customizability. By leasing their machines to licensed manufacturers, Roca allows cannabis brands to offer highly personalized products without the need for heavy investment in technology and infrastructure.

As Roca grows, its future looks bright. The company’s technology is already generating buzz, with plans to roll out new machines and increase production in the coming year. Roca’s adaptability ensures that it remains a step ahead of competitors, whether that’s by offering unique strain profiles, flavor combinations, or targeted experiences.

A LEGACY IN THE MAKING

For Solell and Apfelbaum, Roca is more than just a business—it’s a chance to create a lasting legacy. “Our goal isn’t just to sell a product,” says Apfelbaum. “It’s about reshaping the way people think about cannabis consumption—whether they’re using it for medical purposes or recreation. We’re here to change the narrative and make cannabis more accessible, reliable, and customizable.”

As Roca continues to grow and innovate, one thing is clear: they’re not just pushing the boundaries of cannabis technology—they’re changing the game entirely. Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or a first-time user, Roca is proving that the future of cannabis consumption is about precision, personalization, and above all, a better experience with every puff.

Stay tuned, because with Roca on the rise, the future of cannabis is just getting started. If you’re an extract manufacturer or cannabis brand, and want to get in touch with Roca, please visit their website and leave an inquiry www.rollingcard.io @roca.technology

Duc Anh Dang is no stranger to the grind. As the Managing Director of Mary Jane Berlin, he’s been at the forefront of Europe’s cannabis evolution since 2016. What began as a small festival aimed at shedding light on the benefits of cannabis has grown into one of Europe’s largest and most influential cannabis trade events, drawing thousands of visitors, exhibitors, and industry leaders year after year.

MARY JANE BERLIN

Dang’s path to the cannabis industry wasn’t conventional. Having seen firsthand the shift in Germany’s legal framework, he understands the challenges of bringing a previously underground market into the light. For him, the mission has always been about more than just business—it’s about changing perceptions, shifting cultural attitudes, and creating a space where cannabis culture can thrive.

Today, Mary Jane Berlin is at the heart of Germany’s growing cannabis industry, leading the charge as it shifts from medicinal use to potential recreational legalization. In an exclusive interview for Honeysuckle Media with the team at Green Success - the premier house of brands revolutionizing US culture brands into the European medical market with big names such Tyson 2.0, Cali X, and Packs. Dang spoke candidly about the evolution of Europe’s cannabis market, the role of international brands, and what’s next for Germany as it continues to move toward broader legalization.

EXCLUSIVE Q&A

WITH DUC ANH DANG

Q: Duc, you’ve been leading Mary Jane Berlin since 2016. How have you seen the industry in Europe change over the years?

DUC ANH DANG: It’s been incredible. When we first started, there was nothing. Zero. Cannabis was still illegal for pretty much everyone except medical patients. Fast forward to today, and Germany is legally allowing people to grow plants at home, there’s tons of medical cannabis on the market, and the conversation is shifting to recreational use. The growth is almost impossible to compare.

Q: What can we expect from Mary Jane Berlin this year compared to last year?

DANG: Oh, this year is going to be huge. We’re talking about more halls, more exhibitors, more visitors, and the whole event area is going to be massive. We’re pushing the limits of what we can do. We’re building something bigger each year, not just in size, but in the energy and impact we can make in the industry. It’s going to feel like the industry is finally coming into its own in Europe.

Q: How has the German market evolved since you started, and where do you see it going?

DANG: It’s like night and day. Back in 2016, we were fighting for every inch. People didn’t even understand why cannabis should be legal. Now, there’s medical cannabis everywhere, and the conversations are moving toward full legalization. People are finally accepting that cannabis is here to stay—and I think the next step will be recreational legalization. That’s the game-changer for us.

SHAPING THE FUTURE OF EUROPE’S CANNABIS MARKET WITH MARY JANE BERLIN

Q: What role are international brands playing in the European market, and how have U.S. brands impacted Germany?

DANG: U.S. brands like Tyson 2.0, Cali X, and Packs & More are definitely changing the game. The U.S. has street credibility, a huge legacy in the industry. They’ve been around longer, and they’re bringing that experience to Europe, which is a good thing for everyone. For us in Germany, it pushes the quality up. It's not just about competing for space; it’s about improving the market by offering more variety and better products. When the big players come in, they raise the bar for everyone else.

Q: You mentioned quality—how do you feel about the current state of products on the market in Germany?

DANG: Honestly? There’s a lot of room for improvement. The legal market is still figuring it out. Some of the product quality just doesn’t cut it. People are looking for that real thing, not just something that’s legal and easily accessible. What we need is more artisanal, craft cannabis. That’s where we’re headed— toward micro-grows, quality over quantity. That’s where the heart of the culture is.

Q: There’s been a lot of talk about the Green Success Initiative and its role in Europe. What’s your take on it?

DANG: The Green Success Initiative is absolutely a game changer. It’s bringing a lot of culture and lifestyle-driven brands into the European market— brands with a real message, not just a product to sell. These brands are pushing the boundaries of what cannabis culture can be, and that’s going to resonate with the European market. It’s not just about the plant; it’s about the story behind it. This is how we make a lasting impact.

Q: Finally, what do you think the impact of federal legalization in the U.S. will be on the global cannabis industry, and how will it affect Europe?

DANG: If the U.S. goes federal, it’s a big deal—not just for the U.S., but for the whole world. It’ll lift the stigma, change the perception globally, and make it easier for other countries to follow suit. For Europe, it means more pressure to accelerate the push for legalization. And for the industry, it means more investment, more innovation, and more opportunities for everyone involved.

DUC ANH DANG

INTERVIEW BY GREEN SUCCESS

When it comes to the future of medical cannabis in Europe, few voices resonate as powerfully as that of Niklas Kouparanis, the CEO and co-founder of Bloomwell Group, Germany’s largest medical cannabis company that operates the nation’s largest digital platform for medical cannabis. With a passion for innovation, an unwavering commitment to patient care, and an entrepreneurial spirit, Kouparanis has been a key player in reshaping the medical cannabis landscape in Germany. His journey from finance to cannabis is as

WHAT'S NEXT: A FUTURE

The future for Bloomwell and the German cannabis market is incredibly bright. Since 2024, patient numbers have exploded, with the company seeing a 1,000% increase in users. “We’re just getting started,” Kouparanis says with confidence. “The demand is massive, and it’s only going to grow as more people learn about the ease of becoming a medical cannabis patient.”

MEDICAL CANNABIS LANDSCAPE: A NEW ERA OF PATIENT ACCESS

compelling as the transformation he’s helping lead in Western Europe’s most populated nation.

FROM THE BOARDROOM TO THE GREEN FRONTIER

Kouparanis quickly rose through the ranks at a medical cannabis wholesale company, learning the ropes of an industry on the cusp of global expansion. In 2018 he founded a German wholesaler, leading it to an impressive multi-million dollar exit after a year. In 2020, he co-founded Bloomwell Group with a bold mission: to create a platform that would make medical cannabis more accessible and user-friendly through the power of technology. Today, Bloomwell is not only Germany’s largest medical cannabis platform but also one of the leaders in the European cannabis revolution.

FROM NICHE TO MAINSTREAM

When Kouparanis reflects on Germany’s journey with medical cannabis, there’s one date that stands out: April 2024. That’s when cannabis was officially decriminalized and reclassified in Germany—not as a narcotic, but as a legitimate, prescription medication. This milestone was a gamechanger for patients, and Kouparanis believes it opened the floodgates for easier access and wider acceptance.

“Before April 2024, cannabis was still seen as this illicit, almost taboo substance,” says Kouparanis. “But once it was reclassified, it could be prescribed just like any other medication, making it much easier for patients to access.” This legal shift was a seismic moment for the country’s medical cannabis industry, and it set the stage for a significant rise in patient numbers.

Bloomwell has taken full advantage of these new regulations, positioning itself at the forefront of patient care through its innovative platform. “It’s like ordering from Amazon,” Kouparanis explains. Patients now register online, fill out a quick questionnaire, receive an e-prescription in minutes, and have their medicine delivered to their door within 24 to 48 hours.

TACKLING THE ILLICIT MARKET: QUALITY AND SAFETY FIRST

While the legal market continues to grow, Kouparanis recognizes a major hurdle—the persistent existence of the illicit market. “We’re not going to solve this problem overnight,” he admits. “But it’s crucial that patients get their cannabis from regulated, safe sources. The stakes are too high for people to be buying from illegal markets.”

Bloomwell’s approach is rooted in quality assurance. By working closely with international suppliers and importing cannabis from countries such as Uruguay, South Africa, and Colombia, Bloomwell can offer patients access to high-quality products at competitive prices. “Cannabis from unlicensed vendors isn’t just illegal—it’s potentially dangerous. We’re providing a safer alternative, with reliable, tested products,” says Kouparanis.

As Bloomwell continues to scale, the company is focusing on expanding its product range. While flower remains the dominant product, the platform is already developing alternatives such as vape pens, edibles, and tinctures. “Cannabis is not just about flower. We’re committed to bringing new, innovative products to market that serve different patient needs,” he explains.

And for Kouparanis, technology is the key to continuing that expansion. “It’s about efficiency. The more we can streamline the process with tech, the easier it is for patients to access the care they need—and the better we can serve them,” he says.

A NEW FRONTIER: GERMANY’S ROLE IN THE GLOBAL CANNABIS MOVEMENT

As for the global cannabis landscape, Kouparanis is optimistic about Germany’s future. “Germany is well-positioned to lead Europe’s cannabis market. We have the infrastructure, the demand, and the public support to do it,” he says. As more countries look to Germany as a model for medical cannabis, the nation is primed to become the largest medical cannabis market in the world.

With a booming population of 84 million, a rapidly expanding patient base, and a forward-thinking regulatory framework, Germany is quickly becoming the epicenter of Europe’s cannabis revolution. In the process, it’s creating a blueprint for other nations to follow.

BEYOND THE HORIZON: WHAT’S NEXT FOR BLOOMWELL

Looking ahead, Bloomwell’s mission is clear: to remain at the cutting edge of patient care, continue innovating in product development, and lead the charge for cannabis reform in Europe. As international companies turn their attention to Germany, there’s no doubt that Bloomwell will play a key role in shaping the market’s future.

With the global cannabis conversation shifting toward Europe, all eyes are on Germany—and Bloomwell Group. The company is a beacon of progress, showing the world what’s possible when innovation, technology, and patient care come together. Under the leadership of Niklas Kouparanis, the future of medical cannabis in Germany is brighter than ever.

Germany’s cannabis market isn’t just transforming—it’s a new frontier in the making, and Bloomwell is at the heart of it.

CALI-X

FROM THE STREETS TO THE PHARM: CALI-X’S MOVE FROM UNDERGROUND CULTURE TO EUROPE’S MEDICAL CANNABIS MARKET

As Europe’s cannabis scene evolves, some brands are bridging two distinct worlds: the raw, underground culture of cannabis and the regulated realm of medical marijuana. Cali-X, founded by *K*, a veteran of London’s cannabis subculture, exemplifies this shift. Originally rooted in London’s high-end cannabis circles, Cali-X has moved into the global medical cannabis market, reflecting a broader change in the industry as cannabis transitions from its rebellious origins to a more legitimate, medical role.

For decades, cannabis in Europe was produced and consumed in secret, far from the public eye. However, as legalization progresses, cannabis is moving from underground circles to regulated pharmacies. Cali-X seeks to bridge this gap by offering authenticity, appealing to both traditional consumers and medical patients.

THE LEGACY OF THE STREETS: TRUST, LOYALTY, & AUTHENTICITY

In today’s competitive market, standing out involves more than high-quality products—it’s about culture. Cannabis is built on trust, loyalty, and authenticity. For years, the European market was dominated by personal, local transactions within the black market, based on mutual trust in an unregulated world.

As the industry enters the medical space, this trust must evolve to meet new standards. Cali-X recognizes that while it brings street culture’s authenticity to the medical market, it must also align with the transparency and consistency that medical users demand. “It’s about transferring trust from the streets to the regulated market,” says Yuval Soiref, co-founder of PhCann and Green Success, a house of brands including Cali-X. K adds, “Trust has always been about buying from your local dealer.”

STREET MEETS PHARM

The rise of strains like Zkittlez has redefined global cannabis culture, and Cali-X was at the forefront of that shift. Now, they are blending grassroots knowledge with the precision needed in the pharmaceutical world.

“We’re not just creating cannabis; we’re creating a culture,” K says. “We’re moving from street-level quality to pharmaceutical-level trust.” While the medical market demands clean, tested products, Cali-X remains committed to preserving the flavor, potency, and authenticity that has made cannabis culture so enduring.

BUILDING TRUST IN THE MEDICAL MARKET

Moving cannabis from the black market to medical dispensaries requires more than product regulation—it’s about rebuilding trust. As European markets develop, Cali-X understands the importance of authenticity while meeting pharmaceutical standards. This dual focus ensures that the products are clean, tested, and reliable.

Looking to the future, Cali-X plans to expand beyond Europe, targeting markets like Israel and Australia. Their goal is to become a leading name in the global medical cannabis space.

EDGAR ESTEVES

Filmmaking is a high-pressure, ever-evolving world, and Edgar Esteves is carving his path through it with a style that’s equal parts meticulous and collaborative. Known for his work with some of hip hop’s biggest stars—from weed superstars Wiz Khalifa to Lil Wayne—Esteves’s approach to creating music videos isn’t just about the finished product; it’s about building a community of creators and fostering mentorship for the next generation. His recent work on *Proud of Me* by Fridayy featuring Meek Mill and is a perfect example of this vision at play. But for Esteves, the challenges are always part of the journey. We sat down with him to discuss how he navigates those hurdles, his take on cannabis and creativity, and his plans for the future of filmmaking.

The Power of Shadou-ing: Giving Back to the Next Generation of Filmmakers

Esteves isn’t just about making great videos; he’s passionate about helping others find their way in the industry. “I’ve been having people shadow me for about four or five years now,” he explains. “I wanted to build a platform where creators could come on set and learn, whether they were just starting out or needed a little guidance. We don’t tell anyone exactly what jobs we’re working on until the last minute, and the next thing you know, you could be shadowing me on a Meek Mill shoot in Philly.”

The Shadou platform, created by Edgar Esteves, offers emerging creators the chance to learn directly from industry professionals by shadowing on real-world sets. For Esteves, shadowing is a game-changer. He recalls a pivotal moment early in his career when he saw Colin Tilly’s treatment on someone’s laptop. “At the time, I was making treatments on Microsoft Word, Times New Roman font—nothing fancy. But that moment made me realize how important the visual and aesthetic side of filmmaking is. It opened my eyes to what was possible.”

Esteves is deeply aware of the gap in resources for young creators, especially for those who didn’t have access to formal education in filmmaking. “There are so many people out there who want to get into this industry but don’t have the support or knowledge. I didn’t have it when I was starting. If I can help change that for someone else, I will.”

The Cannabis Connection: Creativity, Focus, and Flow

As we talk about Esteves’s process, he reflects on his medicinal cannabis use. “I use weed to help me sleep through long nights,” he says with a chuckle. “I’ll be writing a treatment and hitting a wall, and then I’ll just smoke, get some sleep, wake up, and the ideas start flowing.”

But it’s not just about the personal use—cannabis often enters into the larger creative process, especially when it comes to working with artists. Hip hop and cannabis have a longstanding relationship, and for Esteves, it’s a natural part of his workflow. “I have no problem with consumption on set, as long as it doesn’t affect the performance. If we’re wrapping up a shoot, like the Fridayy and Meek Mill video, I’ll grab a joint and take a hit, just to unwind. It’s all about balance—you gotta stay sharp when you’re working, but also, sometimes a little weed is all you need to relax once the job’s done.”

Navigating Last-Minute Chaos: A Day in the Life of a Director

Shooting a music video is always full of unexpected moments, and for Esteves, adaptability is key. His recent video for *Proud of Me* saw a flurry of last-minute changes that required quick thinking and flexibility. “The night before the shoot, we got word from Meek Mill’s team that he wanted to shoot at a few different locations, including the place where his father had passed away,” Esteves recalls. “Then Fridayy wanted to include his grandma’s house. These things came up at 10 PM, the night before we were supposed to shoot. But instead of saying no, I just called the label and said, ‘Look, they’ve got these requests, let’s figure out a way to make it work.’”

The challenge wasn’t just about logistics; it was about understanding that these moments were deeply personal for the artists. “This isn’t just my video—it’s their video too. I want to make sure we represent them in the right way,” Esteves says. “So, we pivoted and made it happen. It’s about being flexible and finding solutions on the fly.”

Looking Ahead: The Future of Edgar Esteves

Esteves’s ambition isn’t just limited to music videos. As he moves forward, he has his sights set on feature films. “This year, I’m focused on getting a feature out in 2025,” he says with determination. “I’ve got three longform projects in the works—one’s a documentary on a music artist, another’s a scripted film about substance abuse and fame, and the third one is about a group of young boys in Nigeria making Hollywoodstyle movies on their smartphones to save the world. It’s an exciting time, and I’m looking forward to seeing how everything shapes up.”

For Esteves, the key to success in the ever-changing world of filmmaking is ownership. “You’ve got to be a creative entrepreneur,” he asserts. “It’s not just about being the director; it’s about owning the production company, creating your own lane, and staying true to your vision.”

As he prepares for the next chapter of his career, Esteves’s message is clear: never stop pushing boundaries, and always make room for the next generation of creators. The future is his, and it’s wide open. @edgaresteves @shadouco @blanksquareproductions blanksquareproductions.com, shadou.co

ROOTED IN SUNSHINE, BLOOMING NATIONALLY:

A

Coming from a family with a green thumb but choosing to pluck an even thornier thorn, cannabis marketing, Steph Frohock, the Vice President of Marketing at The Flowery, plots a steady course. With a career spanning over a decade in brand-building, she brings a wealth of experience across finance, marketing, and operations. Combining her passion for growth and her expertise in strategy, Frohock has helped The Flowery carve out a niche in the competitive cannabis industry.

“I’ve

seen women in leadership roles here at The Flowery, and it’s inspiring to see how the company creates opportunities for all individuals to succeed”

Frohock’s journey to cannabis marketing began in the alcohol industry, where she developed a strong foundation in brand-building and customer engagement. Her transition into cannabis was driven by her entrepreneurial spirit and the opportunity to be part of an industry poised for massive growth. “I grew up in a family business, so the transition to cannabis felt natural,” Frohock reflects. “The opportunity to work with people who share a vision for change in this space has been incredibly rewarding.”

At The Flowery, Frohock oversees all aspects of marketing, delving into such diverse arenas as experiential marketing, like physician outreach and events, to facets of digital marketing including website, email, loyalty programs, and ads. Since joining the company, she has been instrumental in developing and executing creative campaigns that have helped The Flowery thrive in a highly regulated market. Cannabis marketing, in particular, poses unique challenges, particularly due to restrictions on advertising. However, Frohock and her team have found ways to circumvent these obstacles by leveraging word-of-mouth referrals, partnering with medical professionals, and using innovative methods like offering coupons, which have proven highly effective in increasing customer engagement.

The cannabis landscape is unique not only because of its regulatory environment but also due to the market’s evolving nature. Frohock has seen firsthand the differences between Florida’s medical market and New York’s newly launched recreational market. In New York, there is more freedom for marketing initiatives such as billboards and event hosting, which are restricted in Florida’s more conservative cannabis space. The shift has allowed The Flowery to experiment with new strategies, including the launch of a customer loyalty program, which has been met with strong success. With this shift in focus, Frohock sees the New York market as a place where The Flowery can expand its brand and reach a broader audience.

As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Frohock has also experienced the unique opportunity to be part of a growing movement that is increasingly supportive of female leaders. “I’ve seen women in leadership roles here at The Flowery, and it’s inspiring to see how the company creates opportunities for all individuals to succeed,” Frohock says. “It’s not about gender; it’s about the dedication and hard work you put in. We’re passionate about giving everyone the chance to rise through the ranks.”

Citing the gift of an incredible mentor early in her career who inspired her to empower others, Frohock shares her true vocation for supporting women professionally. Noting that many of The Flowery’s current female managers “began their careers with little prior experience or formal education,” she praises how their “natural strengths, dedication, and commitment to personal and professional growth have enabled them to excel” at the company.

Frohock’s personal connection to cannabis also informs her leadership approach. What started as a shift from wine to weed sparked her interest in the medicinal qualities of cannabis. The product’s ability to change lives and offer relief to those in need resonates deeply with her, as she sees the industry’s potential to make a profound impact on society. “Cannabis is not just a product—it’s a transformative experience,” Frohock adds. “I’ve seen so many people’s lives improve, whether through medical cannabis or simply for recreational use, and that makes all the hard work worth it.”

Looking ahead, Frohock is optimistic about The Flowery’s future. The company is expanding rapidly in Florida and New York, with plans to open more stores and explore new sales avenues such as live-stream selling. With the cannabis industry continuing to evolve and mature, Frohock is excited to see where it leads. “The opportunities are endless, and we’re just getting started,” she says. “As a company, we’re committed to growing alongside the industry and continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible.”

Under Frohock’s leadership, The Flowery is well-positioned for continued success. Through her creative marketing strategies, passion for the product, and dedication to growth, she’s helping shape the future of cannabis retail and customer experience. @floweryflorida @steph_frohock theflowery.co

My Green Fields: LIOR PISSO BLOOMS IN THE DESERT

From Israel’s largest cultivation facility to a global cannabis empire, My Green Fields is shaping the future of cannabis. Founded by wife and husband team, Lior Pisso and Ido Saada, the company has mastered the Golden Triangle of success: world-class genetics, pharmaceutical-grade production, and a top-tier leadership team. With strategic partnerships across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, My Green Fields is setting a global standard in cannabis. But how did two Israeli entrepreneurs with distinct backgrounds come together to lead the industry?

“Cannabis wasn’t just an opportunity for us—it was a calling,” says Pisso. “When our first daughter was born, I knew Ido should transition out of his military career into something meaningful. We saw cannabis as a combination of discipline, science, and innovation. We didn’t want to just participate—we wanted to lead. So we traveled the world, learning, building relationships, and understanding the global supply chain before planting our first seed.”

align perfectly with our philosophy. Together, we’re elevating global cannabis quality.”

Another notable collaboration is with Khalifa Kush, one of the U.S.’s most iconic cannabis brands. “We’re proud to bring this elite quality to the global market,” says Saada. “Our strategic collaborations are expanding our reach and blending top-tier genetics with My Green Fields’ international presence.”

As the cannabis industry evolves, Pisso and Saada are focused on emerging trends. “Pharmaceutical-grade standards are the future,” says Pisso, pointing to markets like Germany, Switzer land, and Australia as setting the precedent. They also believe that genetics will be pivotal in the next generation of cannabis brands. “The companies that master breeding and innovation will dominate.”

Israel, recognized as a leader in cannabis research, became the launchpad for My Green Fields. However, Pisso and Saada saw a gap between cutting-edge research and high-quality cultivation. “We bridged that gap,” Pisso explains. “My Green Fields is built on precision—top-tier genetics, pharmaceutical-grade production, and operational excellence. That’s how we became Israel’s largest cultivator, setting a new industry standard.”

For My Green Fields, partnerships are more than business transactions. “We don’t do ‘business as usual,’” says Saada. “We build long-term, strategic relationships with carefully chosen partners, ensuring mutual growth.” This approach has garnered a loyal network of global collaborators.

Global supply chain shifts are also on their radar, with cost-ef fective cultivation hubs like Thailand and GMP processing centers in Europe. “We built My Green Fields to stay ahead of these trends,” adds Pisso.

Events like Spannabis and Mary Jane Berlin are more than in dustry meet-ups—they’re where leaders set the agenda. “These events let us showcase innovations, strengthen partnerships, and shape the future of cannabis,” says Saada.

Discussing the evolution of American cannabis, both founders are excited about the possibilities. “America leads in branding and consumer culture,” Pisso explains. “Israel leads in genetics and cultivation science. The synergy is clear. Our next step is structured partnerships to bring Israeli cannabis science to the U.S. while helping American brands scale globally.”

Israel’s cannabis leadership extends beyond research. “Israel is shaping the future of global cannabis,” says Pisso, highlighting the country’s innovations in genetics, clinical trials, and cultiva tion techniques. Looking ahead, the founders are focused on expanding My Green Fields’ global footprint. “This is the year we take our global dominance to the next level,” Saada says. “We’re deep ening our supply chain in Thailand, expanding in Europe, and launching world-class genetics.”

At the core of My Green Fields’ success is what the founders call ‘The Golden Triangle’—the perfect

balance of facility, genetics, and team. “We built a 45,000-square-meter facility meeting the highest global standards,” says Pisso. “We secured the best genetics and processed them in our state-of-the-art tissue culture lab, supported by a team obsessed with excellence.”

When asked for advice for budding cannabis entrepreneurs, Saada offers valuable insight: “Don’t rush. Invest in your foundation—many compa nies jump into branding without securing cultivation and processing. Pri oritize genetics, as great cannabis starts at the genetic level. And build the right team—ensure diversity, especially female leadership.”

The leadership team at My Green Fields reflects this ethos. “We don’t just talk about diversity—we build with it,” says Pisso. “Women bring unique strengths to leadership, from strategic thinking to operational precision. Our team’s excellence speaks for itself.”

As My Green Fields continues to dominate the global cannabis market, it’s clear: it’s not just about growing plants—it’s about growing the future of the industry, one strategic move at a time.

Zara Snapp:

CANNABIS COCAINE

Advocacy for Inclusive Substances

Zara Snapp’s name has become synonymous with change in Mexico’s cannabis movement. As the founder of Instituto RIA—a pioneering organization in drug policy reform and advocacy—Snapp has championed a vision that blends public health, human rights, and social justice, tackling issues ranging from cannabis legalization to harm reduction programs.

Nestled in the heart of Mexico, Instituto RIA has become a cornerstone of advocacy, pushing for the reform of drug laws while working directly with communities to create safer, healthier alternatives. Their innovative drug-checking programs, which allow users to test their substances for safety and to identify adulterants at festivals and local community spaces, are just one example of their proactive approach to harm reduction. It’s all part of Snapp’s larger goal: to cultivate a world where drug users are not criminalized but supported.

“because when my dad was using cannabis, he wasn’t drinking alcohol.”

As a young adult, she turned to cannabis her self, but with a different purpose: to heal. After becoming a mother, Zara found that cannabis provided therapeutic relief, especially during the challenging post-birth and breastfeeding stages. “It wasn’t recreational anymore,” she explains. “It became about taking care of myself. It was about grounding myself, both physically and emotionally.”

During an insightful interview with Honeysuckle, Snapp shared the journey that led her to this life-altering work, delving into her personal history, the social justice aspects of cannabis, and the future of the cannabis industry in Mexico and beyond.

FROM MEXICO TO COLORADO: THE

OF A LIFELONG JOURNEY

In 2018, a legal breakthrough would cement her bond with the plant. Zara became one of the first individuals in Mexico authorized by the Supreme Court to cultivate cannabis for personal use. The act of growing cannabis, she explains, gave her a deeper understanding of its life force.

ORIGINS

Zara’s story begins in Mexico, where she was born to American parents in the 1980s. Her father, a talented trumpet player, was recruited to Mexico’s Xalapa Symphony Orchestra, marking the beginning of a journey that would see Zara growing up immersed in music and culture. Yet, as with many of us, her life took a turn when her mother moved the family to the United States for better educational opportunities.

It was during her time in Colorado that Zara witnessed the intense racial profiling of young people, particularly those from Black and Latinx backgrounds, and the criminalization of drug use. Cannabis, acid, and other substances became part of a landscape that Zara found deeply unjust.

“I watched my friends get caught up in the system,” she recalls. “Once you’re in, it’s like a downward spiral. Parole, probation, criminal records... it all takes a toll.”

The experience ignited a sense of justice in Zara, driving her toward activism. She got involved in sex education and HIV prevention programs, where her Spanish-speaking skills gave her a unique advantage in reaching the Latino community in

THE SPARK FOR CANNABIS ADVOCACY

As a young woman navigating both cultures, Zara was no stranger to the stigma surrounding drug use. But it wasn’t until her return to Mexico in her adult years that she began to focus specifically on cannabis. She recalls her childhood experiences, noting that her father openly used cannabis, which helped him manage his struggles with alcohol. “It was a positive in our lives,” Zara says,

in criminalizing a plant that, to her, is as harmless as any other garden herb. “I have basil and lavender growing right next to my cannabis plants. How is this plant illegal? Why are we criminalizing people for this?” she exclaims.

INSTITUTO RIA: A VISION FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE

Snapp founded Instituto RIA with a clear mission in mind: to bring social justice to the conversation around cannabis regulation and drug policy reform. Working within a framework of human rights, she and her team have pushed for comprehensive cannabis laws in Mexico that don’t just focus on legalization, but also take into account the social, economic, and racial disparities created by the War on Drugs.

“It’s about creating a legal market that includes cultivating communities,” she explains. “It’s about offering economic opportunities to those who’ve been disproportionately affected by the war on drugs. We need dignified jobs, better wages, and access to business ownership for those who’ve been criminalized.”

other community events. Their message? The only way to keep people safe is to build trust, not fear.

A BROADER APPROACH: ADVOCATING FOR COCAINE AND OTHER SUBSTANCES

While cannabis remains at the forefront of Snapp’s advocacy, her commitment to drug policy reform extends to a variety of substances. One of the most radical components of her work is her advocacy for the regulation of cocaine, a substance often tied to violence, addiction, and societal harm due to its illicit status. But as Zara points out, “Cocaine is already part of the global economy, so why not take it out of the hands of criminal organizations and put it under legal regulation?”

By advocating for the regulation of cocaine, Snapp seeks to promote harm reduction and redistribute wealth more fairly. “We’ve seen this with cannabis,” she explains, “where legal markets reduce violence, provide opportunities, and make drug use safer. Why should cocaine be treated differently?”

growing number of women-led cannabis businesses. From Chicks versus Stigma, a lifestyle brand founded by Brenda Hernandez, to Dulce Maria, a women-owned coffee shop in Mexico City that caters to cannabis users, women are increasingly taking the lead in shaping the cannabis market.

“We’re in the process of creating safe spaces, sisterhood, and support for each other,” Zara explains. “This is about more than just cannabis— it’s about creating a supportive network where women are empowered and their businesses are thriving.”

THE ROAD AHEAD: CANNABIS REGULATION AND SOCIAL CHANGE

Looking to the future, Zara is focused on securing the sustainability of her organization while advocating for policy change. With new political shifts in Mexico, including the potential for the country’s first female president, Zara hopes to see the nation take a more progressive stance on cannabis regulation within the next few years.

Zara’s work on cocaine regulation is rooted in a vision where substance use is treated with care and respect rather than criminalization. “The goal is to create a regulated market where individuals who use these substances have access to a safer supply, much like cannabis,” she says. She believes that regulation can help reduce violence and give communities more control over the economic benefits of drugs derived from coca leaves, as well as expand access to less risky products.

“We’re looking at how we can build a future where no substance is criminalized, but rather regulated with the similar safety measures and public health standards that we apply to alcohol and

CANNABIS, FEMINISM, AND LATIN AMERICA’S CANNABIS MOVEMENT

In Mexico and much of Latin America, where conservative traditions often dominate, the cannabis movement is especially challenging. Zara, however, sees a wave of change. Over the past decade, women have increasingly become leaders in the cannabis space, taking on entrepreneurial roles and driving political change.

“We’ve seen a shift in who’s leading the cannabis movement,” she says. “About ten years ago, it was mostly men—often older, bearded men.

But now, there’s a new generation of young women and mothers of patients who are at the forefront. It’s exciting.”

One of the most visible examples of this shift is the

And while cannabis is central to the work she does, Zara is equally committed to harm reduction programs, including expanding access to health services for women and dissidents. She believes that societal change begins with compassionate policies that prioritize people over punitive measures.

Zara Snapp’s commitment to social justice, cannabis, and harm reduction is a testament to the power of activism. From personal growth to political change, she’s not just fighting for cannabis; she’s fighting for a world where all people, no matter their background, have access to health, freedom, and dignity. As she continues to build the foundation for a more just world, one thing is clear: Instituto RIA is a beacon of hope in Mexico and beyond.

Zara’s visionary work is building a future where a spectrum of substances—cannabis, cocaine, and beyond—can be regulated with public health and human rights at the forefront. As global conversations about harm reduction gain traction, Mexico stands poised to be a leader in creating a new world of drug policy that leaves fear and criminalization behind in favor of compassion, safety, and opportunity for all.

cannabis didn’t start in a typical way. It began in 2010 when I was working in my garden in Garberville, Northern California. I was tending to a greenhouse of Green Crack, watering the plants and sitting beneath the canopy of smart pots. As I sat there, something unexpected happened. A voice entered my head. It wasn’t the kind of thought I’d ever experienced before. The voice told me that she did not like being called “Green Crack.” She said her real name was “Foxy Lady.” As I looked at her, I understood why. Her leaves were more sativa-dominant, shaggy and psychedelic, with a vibe that reminded me of the 70s. It felt like she was truly speaking to me, and I began to realize that cannabis was far more than just a plant. I hadn’t heard from her for a while, but during the crash of the California cannabis market, she came back to me. My husband and I had been growing cannabis at an industrial level, but with the market demand and inflation rising, we had to stop our homesteading approach and adapt just to keep up. It was mentally, physically, and spiritually taxing. The magic of the plants, the connection with the community, it all felt stripped away. Homesteaders were leaving the forest, the old ways of working with cannabis were fading, and the soul of the culture was dying.

We had a “soul patch,” as I like to call it—a legacy garden that had been growing since the ‘90s. The same soil, the same beds, and everything hand-watered under the sun. There was something sacred about those gardens. The kids helped, we grew our food, and it felt like a beautiful cycle of life. But with the crash of the market, I found myself sitting in that garden, overwhelmed with confusion and grief for what seemed like the death of our culture. I remember crying, unsure of what would come next. That’s when she spoke to me again.

She told me to stay true to her. She opened up about her spiritual essence, why she manifested as a plant, and why I was meant to work with her. She shared her plan with me. “Don’t give up,” she told me. “You are part of my family. Even in these tough times, trust me. We are not done. Just be patient.” One year later, I found myself in Thailand, working with the plant again in a completely different environment. I was in an incredible garden where we could work with the plant’s energy in an intentional way, far removed from industry standards. It felt like a blessing.

Work-

1.

One day, as I was taking clones in the garden, she spoke to me again: “Look... look at where you are now. Do you believe me now? I led you here. Our work begins now.” I knew that it was her voice. I’ve learned to trust it. Now, when I’m in the garden, I know it’s her speaking. “Turn the music off, drop your ego, and maybe you’ll hear something,” I’ve learned to tell myself. In my work with her, I’ve had a few questions I’ve wanted to ask her:

What does she want people to call her? I’m not getting a clear answer on that. It feels like it’s less about a name and more about the connection we have.

2.

Does she think Honeysuckle is doing a good job representing her and the future of cannabis? Yes. She sees that you’re here for the greater good and not for a takeover of her energy, but to complement it. She wants us to build and bond a culture—a family.

3.

What would her primary message be to the people? She wants people to know that she is a real, living entity here for us. She encourages people to listen, to quiet their minds, and she’ll speak to them. Her message is about natural, respectful cultivation. She wants to be grown with intention—not just for profit. Profit is a natural byproduct of the care and respect we give her. “Take care of me, and I’ll take care of you.”

4.

What makes her most happy? She thrives when in harmony with nature, existing on earth and flowing with the natural cycles of life.

5.

What makes her most upset in how she is treated or misused? She’s strong and can put up with a lot, but she reminds us: “Do unto others as you would have done unto you.” Treat her with respect, and she will reciprocate.

ing with cannabis is more than just a business for me—it’s a spiritual journey. I’ve learned to listen, to hear her voice, and to trust her guidance. As I continue to grow with her, I’m reminded that this journey is about more than profits or trends. It’s about connection, respect, and honoring the plant’s true nature. The work we are doing now is just the beginning, and I know there’s more to come.
