Anthony embarked on an incredible tour of Antarctica and Hutigruten cruise full of unforgettable experiences. Read his incredible journey below.
18 Days Chilean Fjords and Antarctica Cruise Tour Day 1 Fly from UK London Heathrow to Santiago Airport Day 2 2 nights at the Sheraton Hotel and Convention Centre, Santiago Day 3 Fly to Punta Arenas, where the expedition ship is awaiting. A welcome on board dinner will take place once on board Day 4 – 6 Sail through Chilean Fjords and Tierra del Fuego. Explore Garibaldi fjord and then make a landing in Cape Horn, the southernmost point of South America. At the end of day 3 cross the famous Drake Passage.
What was your overall impressions of While you were on the cruise what the Hutigruten, MS Midnatsol ship? wildlife species did you see? I would definitely recommend cruising with the Hutigruten MS Midnatsol, could not fault it at all. The staff were friendly, very informative and were always trying to ensure people had the best experience whilst also taking safety into consideration. My cabin was a great comfortable size featuring double/twin sized beds, seating areas with TV, internet access, a heated bathroom floor and equipped with tea and coffee-making facilities, it was everything you would expect. On top of that the food was incredible with a combination of both buffet and set menu with the option of the additional al a carte restaurant. The food options are catered for all people, including a 24-hour café offering drinks and snacks.
What activities/excursions did you do while on board and at ports? While I was on board I got a chance to do a range of activities including:
Kayaking
Kayaking was great, as I got to glide through the quiet waters and got to see the natural beauty of Antarctica including getting a bit nearer to the icebergs but due to obvious safety reasons we could not get too close.
Shoe Snowing
Even though I did not get a chance to do this as it got cancelled due to bad weather, I would recommend doing this.
Hiking at Port Williams
A short and long hike is offered. With the long hike, we got to hike through the forest and mountains. The Hiking at Port Williams is totally worth it as at the end of the hiking you get to see breath-taking views at the top. I also got a chance to land at Cape Horn which is in the Southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago of Southern Chile, which was very unexpected due to the surrounding waters being particularly hazardous. I particularly liked the landings to the penguin colonies where I got to take some amazing photographs.
Antarctica sure is famous for its fierce nature and rare wildlife. While on the cruise excursions, the variety of wildlife that I got to see includes an abundance of Orca and Humpback Whales, leopard and fur seals, cormorants and many bird species. But the highlight of the trip was seeing the rare Magellanic, Gentoo and Chinstrap penguins.
What did you enjoy most about your trip?
Overall, the whole experience was amazing, from witnessing the rare wildlife species, breathtaking scenery’s to getting close to the Icebergs in Antarctica. However, I may have spent less time in Santiago, I would say 48 hours is enough. I would definitely recommend this Antarctica cruise to anyone, as it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
What were your suitcase essentials?
My suitcase essentials included merino wool base layers, a good down jacket and waterproof gloves and a warm hat. Not forgetting my camera with a zoom to capture the unforgettable memories of my trip.
Any recommendations and tips for anyone who would like to embark on this cruise/tour? Yes, it is not cheap but very affordable, so I would recommend booking this adventure as it is a once in a life time opportunity. If you are planning on embarking on this adventure to the Antarctica be sure to take a good down jacket, gloves, a hat and books for any down time. Throughout the tour, sit back and enjoy the unpredictability that is Antarctica. Also, invest in a good camera, and know how to use it, you will be thankful looking back at the pictures taken. I would recommend taking a dry bag to protect the camera from sea spray or the bad weather and sea sickness tablets just in case you are sea sick.
What’s next on your bucket list?
Well, I have always wanted to travel to Japan or Alaska. Therefore, this will definitely be on my bucket list for next year. CALL US TODAY 0800 0856 846

Lima (2 nights with 1 full day) “First arriving at Lima we had cheeky bit of celebrity spotting as Tinie Tempa was on our flight and in front of us at immigration! We were met by Lilianne, who was really helpful and friendly. Hotel Arawi was gorgeous and we had a well-needed sleep. We were up at 5am the next day, we explored the part of Lima we were staying at called Miraflores. Miraflores is great for coastal walks and watching surfers. We had our first Peru cuisine of beef heart skewers and ceviche, which were all very tasty.”
Amazon (2 nights with 2.5 days to explore) “We transferred from Lima to Puerto Maldonado, which was easy and stress free as we were well looked after. It’s the first holiday we’ve ever been on where we’ve been picked up and dropped off everywhere. So it was quite different for us and enjoyable for a change to lugging your own stuff Cabana at Inkaterra Hacie around. They even took us right to the check nda Conception Amazon in desk then the departure gates. At Hacienda Conception we enjoyed an ice cold bottle of water and a short bus trip to the port to get on a motorised canoe. The trip was amazing, from start to finish, it was exciting going down the Madre de Dios River towards the Amazon jungle. The location and Inkaterra Hacienda Conception was stunning! Our cabanas are gorgeous and we were literally sleeping in nature. The sounds of the jungle blew our minds. The excursions were amazing, from eating termites from a tree (a guided experience),to wildlife spotting howler monkeys, birds, parrots, snakes, tarantulas, kamans and herons. The hardest bit was a trek to Lake Sandoval. We went deeper into the jungle chasing after some Macaws and that was exciting going off the beaten track with our guide. Food at Hacienda Conception amazing and lots of it, and the service was impeccable.”
Cusco (2 nights with 1 full day to explore) “This is where the ‘altitude adventure’ started. When we got to the hotel in Cusco the Maytaq was in, our greeter took us through our itinerary for the next few days in Cusco then on to Machu Picchu. The guide suggested we get off the train back from our Machu Picchu trip at a place called Ollantaytambo. We explored Cusco steadily that bo Ollantaytam night and thought it was an amazing town with such a buzzy atmosphere. It is a very religious place and we went inside the cathedral that night as evening prayers were taking pace and it was beautiful. Cusco has a brilliant atmosphere and the excitement about going to Machu Picchu builds whilst there as it is a very traveller based town with everyone talking about Machu Picchu. There are cute baby Alpacas walking around too!”

Machu Picchu (2nights with 2 full days to explore) “Today’s the day we go Machu Picchu. We took the Vistadome train traveling up the Andes. This train was more amazing than we expected. The journey was about 3.5 hours but I didn’t notice as the views were spectacular going up through the Andes, along the side of the Urubamba River and the service on board included a brunch! The train goes through Ollantaytambo which we were told is where the Inca trail starts. As an aside we said would think about going back and do View from an Inca House – Machu Peru again at some point and do the Inca trail Picchu after our first experience. On arrival at Machu Picchu Pueblo we had a friendly greeting at the station, and they took our bags to the hotel for us. Then we got a bus up to Machu Picchu, you could feel the energy turn to pure excitement, a lifelong dream to visit the city in the clouds finally coming true! Our private guide, Daniel was full of good spirit and very knowledgeable! The first trek up doesn’t seem too far but because you’re at altitude it’s a killer. It has to be taken in baby steps even though we are two fit and healthy 35 year olds. The first view is just breath taking. The pictures are amazing but being there for real is something else and hard to describe. We spent a good 2.5 hours having a tour around and learnt so much about Inca history and Inca life. We visited early afternoon which wasn’t too hectic, Machu Picchu Pueblo is such a buzzing place; small but vibrant with travellers and traditional markets to buy souvenirs and everyone sharing stories about their experience up Machu Picchu. Our hotel Inkaterra El Mapi was stunning, again another fabulous hotel and meal plus lots of the local cocktail ‘Pisco Sour’ consumed too! The second day we visited the same areas but also the additional of a 30 minutes’ walk to Inca Bridge. It was luxurious and blew us away. We had arrival drinks and dancing in the bar with strangers from all around the world with live music and percussion playing. The meal was silver service and delicious. It was stunning, beautiful, magical, amazing. I could not stop crying happy tears on the return from Machu Picchu. An experience to remember…”
Sacred Valley (2nights with 1.5 days to relax) “After getting off the Hiram Bingham train it was 9:30pm and we transferred to our final stay in the Sacred Valley, the Aranwa Resort. The journey took about 1 hour and the sky was so clear that night and the clarity of the stars Machu Picchu in the sky were amazing. Aranwa is a spa resort hotel and everything you could need was on site, Spa, cinema, library, 3 restaurants, bars, games rooms, pools and art gallery. A great way to wind down from all the adventuring, we had a spa afternoon and enjoyed some treatments and wonderful food. This trip was arranged as our belated honeymoon. Well worth it and the only thing we would have changed is maybe staying for even longer. Peru is firmly woven into our hearts, and with our traditional wooden panpipes and fluffy lama souvenirs we have the travel trinkets in our home to remind us Aranwa Resort Sacred Val of the trip, alongside about 800 photos to capture ley our memories forever.”
