Will the Engaged Neighbor Please Stand Up?
By David L. Burton, Community Development Specialist, University of Missouri Extension
It is nearly time for residents to begin hosting parties and doing good deeds for their neighbors as part of Missouri Good Neighbor Week (Sept. 28- Oct. 4).
There is an opportunity to win a prize as part of a drawing if you report your act of neighboring from that week and an opportunity to nominate someone for recognition as Missouri's most engaged neighbor, both online at http://missourigoodneighborweek.com.
Missouri Good Neighbor Week is the perfect time to discover love, kindness, and friendship in your neighborhood or community. Research shows that being an engaged neighbor reduces crime and loneliness while also improving communities, and your own health and quality of life.
The special week and the research makes me ask: will the en-
gaged neighbor please stand up?
An engaged neighbor understands the importance of helping out when needed, sharing a cup of sugar when asked, and happily lending a strong back or a listening ear.
An engaged neighbor is willing to share their backyard with the people that live closest to them.
An engaged neighbor is willing to share a conversation or a tear over a coffee or other drink.
An engaged neighbor finds joy by investing in those around them and takes the time to learn and use the names of those that live near them.
An engaged neighbor is giving and enjoys performing good deeds without being prompted.
An engaged neighbor knows that a smile and a wave, and knowing and using the names of neighbors can go a long way toward building a relationship.
An engaged neighbor keeps a

tidy home and lawn. They mow regularly, maintain their lawn, and remove clutter from the yard at the end of the day.
An engaged neighbor knows the importance of being a quiet neighbor. They don't mow their lawn at 7 a.m., don't honk their horn every time they pull into the driveway, and keep their music down past 9 p.m.
Neighboring is an opportunity to be thankful for those living near us and a chance to be a blessing. Being a kind and engaged neighbor can bring out the best in all of us. At the same time, an engaged neighbor knows this requires our attention for more than one week a year.

PROPER FALL MOWING HEIGHT FOR YOUR LAWN
by Jim Crawford, Field Specialist in Agricultural Engineering, MU Extension
Sometimes you will hear people say to let the grass grow tall right before winter sets in. Their reasoning is that the extra foliage will insulate the crown of the plant from the extreme cold of winter. Although this may sound reasonable, in practice it probably does little, if anything, to increase winter hardiness. On the contrary, a canopy that is too high during the winter may lie over and become matted down, leading to an increased incidence of winter-diseases such as snow mold.
You will also hear people recommend cutting the grass a little shorter the final time so that leaves will blow off the lawn and not become wet and matted down causing diseases and dead grass. Again, the reasoning sounds good, but in all practicality, it probably does little to keep the leaves from sticking to the turf and cutting the grass closer than normal may cause damage to the plant crown. Besides – mulching the leaves backing into the lawn is a great source of nutrients and organic material.
Turfgrass species vary genetically in their cold tolerance, with warm-season grasses being less cold tolerant than the cool-season types. Given these differences, cold tolerance is improved by increasing the health of the plants going into the winter, and healthy plants are a result of a sound management program (fertilizing, watering and mowing) during the spring, summer and fall. The lawn will benefit more from continuing to mow at the recommended height than from trying to gain some insulation against winter cold by allowing it to grow tall or mow-
ing it short to prevent debris accumulation.
Here is a list of the recommended mowing height ranges (in inches) for home lawns in Missouri:
Tall fescue 3-4 inches
Kentucky bluegrass 2-3 inches
Fescue/bluegrass lawns3.0 to 3.5 inches.
Bluegrass/ryegrass lawns - 2.5 to 3.5 inches.
Creeping red fescues -3.0 to 3.5 inches
Buffalo grass 2-3 inches
Bermuda grass 2-2.5 inches
Zoysia grass 2-2.5 inches
There may be some benefits gained by adjusting mowing heights WITHIN the recommended range at times. For example, it is a good practice to mow warm-season grasses at the higher end of recommended heights during late summer and early fall because this practice should help them store more carbohydrate reserves for the winter, and it may reduce the incidence of certain coolweather diseases. Mowing warm season grasses at the lower end of the range in the spring removes the dead material and speeds the green up of the lawn in the late spring. But the rule to remember is to stay within the recommended height range for your species.
Regardless of how high you are mowing; it is important to keep mower blades sharp to cut grass cleanly and evenly. Dull cutting blades can tear and shred blades of grass and may fail to cut tougher stems and weeds. These jagged, ripped edges will turn brown as they will not heal as quickly as a cleanly cut blade of grass. This slower healing and jagged edge can also make it easier for diseases to creep into your lawn. A sharp blade is critical for a healthy lawn.

Las Vegas Shooting Memorial Design Gets Approval
LAS VEGAS (AP) —
The permanent memorial to the victims and survivors of the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history will feature 58 candlelike beams under a plan officials in Las Vegas approved Tuesday.
With the design officially in place, Clark County commissioners will shift their focus to selecting a nonprofit that will oversee fundraising and the construction and maintenance of the project. It took years to get to this point in the process and could take years more before the memorial is unveiled at the site of the attack on the Las Vegas Strip.
The commissioners voted unanimously to proceed with the design recommended by the 1 October Memorial Committee, which was formed in 2019 to develop a design concept. The committee, which was dissolved Tuesday after commissioners voted, included a survivor and the sister of one of the 60 people who were killed in the October 2017 shooting.
“We are grateful to the design teams, family
members, survivors and everyone who participated in this process to create a memorial to remember the events of 1 October,” said Clark County Commission Chairman Jim Gibson, whose district includes the festival site. “Thanks to the committee’s hard work, a very unique process was put into place to ensure that anyone who had an idea for the memorial could be heard.”
The number 58 in the final design represents the initial toll of people who were killed when a gunman opened fire from a 32ndfloor suite at the Mandalay Bay hotel on a country music festival crowd below. In addition to those who died at the scene or shortly after the attack, hundreds of people were injured, including two women who initially survived but died in subsequent years from causes attributed to their gunshot wounds.
Mynda Smith, whose sister Neysa Tonks was killed, said Tuesday that she was grateful to be a part of the memorial committee.
“I never thought that this journey could be filled with
so much light," Smith said.
Tonks, a 46-year-old mother of three, had called Las Vegas home for about two decades.
“She loved this city,” Smith said. “I know that she's going to be honored, along with the 57 others who died that night, in such a beautiful way that will bring light to our families. And I know it will bring light to all the survivors.”
The final memorial concept is the work of local firm JCJ Architecture. It envisions a park shaped like an infinity symbol in what was the northeastern corner of the former concert venue, with 22,000 lights representing the number of people who attended the show that night. A looping path will take visitors through a garden area, past a 58-foot (18-meter) glass tower and to a “remembrance ring” with the 58 candles. Each beam will display the name and a photo of a victim.
The commissioners also approved an alternate design Tuesday that would feature 15 large horse statues representing the home states and countries of the 60 people who were
killed, as well as two smaller horses in honor of the dozens of children who lost parents to the attack.
Amber Manka, whose mother died two years after she was shot and paralyzed in the massacre, said she finds the final design to be both beautiful and disappointing.
“This is a beautiful memorial for the 58 and their families. They deserve such a beautiful representation
of their loved ones,” she told The Associated Press. But, she countered, “At this point, I’m pissed. My mom would never have suffered for two years if she didn’t get shot that night. That shooting rocked our family and left us without a mother, grandmother, daughter and sister.”
Manka said she was awaiting a response to a message she sent to the committee outlining her concerns. Her mother, Kimberly Gervais, spent her final years in and out of hospitals and treatment centers in Southern California, where she lived.
In a statement, the county said the final design was a reflection of the public input the committee had gathered through a series of surveys and group discus-
sions.
“Clark County’s intent throughout this effort has been and continues to be to create a memorial that honors all who were affected by the tragedy, including the 58 who died in the immediate aftermath, all those who were injured, including the two who unfortunately passed months later, and all those who were affected in other ways,” the statement said. “Exactly how that will be done will continue to be determined as we move forward with the project.”
The permanent memorial will be separate from a community healing garden built in downtown Las Vegas by more than 1,000 volunteers in the days after the shooting.

Grundy County Route 6 Intersection Improvement Project Continues
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – An intersection improvement project on Grundy County Route 6 at the intersections of 30th Avenue and Route 146/W, located just west of Trenton, was scheduled to begin the next stage of Phase 2 construction at the Missouri Route 146/Route W intersection on Tuesday, Sept. 5. The Missouri Department of Transportation has contracted with Phillips Hardy, Inc. to complete the project which is widening Route 6 and constructing dedicated left and right turn lanes.
The project is being constructed in two phases following the below updated schedule:
Phase 1: 30th Avenue intersection – complete.
Phase 2: Route 146/W intersection – work was to switch to the eastbound lane of the intersection, and traffic was to switch from the eastbound lane to the westbound lane Tuesday, Sept. 5. The project is expected to be complete mid-November.
Once the second phase of work is complete, the contractor will return to
both intersections and overlay them with the final lift of asphalt and install permanent markings.
Route 6 will continue to be narrowed to one lane, with traffic being directed through the work zone by temporary traffic signals. A 12-foot width restriction will remain in place throughout the project.
Access to/from Route W is closed. East and westbound traffic on Route 6 will still be able to access Route 146 to travel north towards Crowder State Park.

Korynn, an NCMC alum, holds a Master’s of Science in Nursing with an emphasis in Nursing Education and has been employed at NCMC for 16 years.
Korynn describes her job as challenging, rewarding, and fun. When asked her favorite thing about NCMC, she said, “the people, employees, and students.” Recently, Korynn assisted with the CNEA accreditation and completed and submitted NCMC’s five-year selfstudy to the Missouri State Board of Nursing in preparation for the routine site visit this September. In the future, Korynn would like to continue to maintain a high standard and reputation of NCMC’s nursing programs. She sees her department advancing by increasing enrollment into the PN-ADN online program and hiring more nursing faculty.

Kraft Heinz is partnering with Del Monte on the lunch kits, which include apples, grapes, pineapple and clementines along with the usual lineup of crackers, cheese and lunch meat.
Kraft Heinz said it made the change after seeing a spike in social media searches for “Lunchables with fruit and vegetables.”
Starting this fall,
Expansion: Lunchables hopes to grow sales by joining school lunch programs with their newly-reconstituted product which will have healthier foods like fruit and vegetables and less fat and sodium.
Lunchables will also be available to school lunch programs, either for sale or for free distribution through the National School Lunch Program. To gain approval Kraft Heinz reformulated two top-selling options to increase protein and whole grains and lower saturated fat and sodium. They also have larger serving sizes Lunchables sales topped $1.8 billion in 2022, up 15% from the prior year according to Circana a market research firm. But that was mostly due to higher prices; actual unit sales were down 0.5%. Kraft Heinz hopes its changes will revitalize sales

TRENTON: 6
MAYSVILLE: 5
In an 11-inning game stretch the Trenton Bulldogs came out on top.
Last Thursday the Lady Bulldogs took on the Lady Wolverines in what was considered a pretty close matchup.
Trenton started pitching with Emma Roberts, who would go on and pitch the first six innings.
Maysville started at home plate and was able to score two runs in the first inning. The Bulldog defense came back and stopped them from scoring.
Bottom of the first Kaylor Hodge led off with a double. Mirena King would then follow her onto base after being walked. A bunt by Madi Moore would bring both of the girls home to tie the game.
The second inning led to Maysville getting another run in after the Bulldogs had an error at third. No Lady Bull-

dogs would score in the bottom of the second.
Top of the third inning the Wolverines advanced another runner to home. Roberts ended the inning striking out the batter.
Bottom of the third is when the Lady Bulldogs got their bats swinging to tie the score.
A short fourth inning rolled right into the fifth with Maysville scoring another run.
It wasn’t until the bottom of the sixth that the Lady Bulldogs tied the game score 5-5.
The next five innings would be brutal for both sides. With good defense and offense from the Lady Bulldogs came the same smart defense and offense from the Lady Wolverinces and their Coach. The top of the eleventh inning, with Avery Clark on the pitcher’s mound, Trenton was able to get three more outs. The first was hit right to Morgan Foster
who caught it for out one. The second was an out at first on a play by Foster. And the last out was a strikeout by Clark.
The Lady Bulldogs had another chance to end this game. Moore popped one up that was caught for an out. Kenzie Lynch would then hit one out at center field but the defense would get her out at home. Clark would be the third batter up. She hit one between the right and center fielders who got confused on who was going to catch the ball, so it landed making Clark safe on third. Foster would be the Lady Bulldog’s saving grace when she hit one up the center, but the defense had an error at first attempting to get the out. This scored Clark and ended the game 6-5.

LATHROP: 12
The Trenton Bulldogs traveled to Lathrop to take on the Mules last Friday. The Mules won the coin toss but elected to have Trenton kick the ball to them first.
In the first quarter both sides played defense really well. The Mules were able to score once but the Bulldogs waited to make their attack getting down to the endzone area as the clock ran down for the end of the first.
The second quarter started with the Bulldogs scoring and kicking the extra point to take the game lead. They then countinued working hard preventing La-
throp from scoring before they themselves scored again at the end of the clock with a pass to Gabe Novak. The halftime score was 13-6 Trenton. Lathrop kicks off the start of the third quarter. With quick play making skill the Bulldogs are able to make it from their own 48 yardline to Lathrop’s eleventh. They scored on the quarteback keeper. The Mules scored one more time for the night ending the third quarter, score 19-12 Trenton.
The Bulldogs would take the fourth quarter by storm scoring once more with another touch down by Novak. The night ends with a big block on deffense by Hunter Smith. Bulldogs win 27-12.

During that drive the Bulldogs lost starting quarterback Peyton Baker to a shoulder injury and was out for the remainder of the game. Sophomore quarterback Jackson Ohlberg led the way for the Gallatin Bulldogs for the remainder of the game. North Platte responded earlier in the second quarter with a 40 yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Colton Kirkham. (2 pt conversion was good). At halftime the score was Gallatin 6 - North Platte 8. On the Panthers first possession in the 3rd quarter, they completed a 5 play drive, 9 yard touchdown run by quarterback Colton Kirkham (two point conversion good). It was a tough battle back and forth between both teams, but the Gallatin Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on any drives. Late in the fourth quarter, North Platte was able to get another touchdown run by running back Dylan Armstrong (two point conversion no good). Final score at Bulldog Stadium, Gallatin 6 - North Platte 22.

OVERVIEW - The Trenton Bulldogs have started their season out strong with an opening season of 2-0. After losing quarterback Coleman Griffin, Junior Mason Rongey has filled the hole well for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have then also relied on Senior Brayden Hughs to fill the wide receiver spot. The Bulldogs hope to go undefeated this season, hoping to beat Gallatin after last year’s defeat and move on past districts. The Bulldogs have had a good offensive team this year with many endzone finishes by Gabe Novak. On defense Seniors Gavin Cagle and Gabe Stark do everything they can to get to the backfield.

OVERVIEW: After a nearly perfect season last year, the 2022 Class 1 District 7 champions return with some big challenges ahead of them. Gallatin’s graduates from last season include; Draven Wright, Payton Feiden, Brett Hemry, Logan Bottcher, Issac Bird, Ethan Adkison, Garrett Dungy, Gabe Parker and Colt Baker. These nine made up most of Gallatin’s offense and defense last season, which helped lead them to the first part of the state tournament. This year Gallatin returned to the field with a quarterback from last year, Peyton Baker. He will be a key player when it comes to leading the team. Along side him is All-State Defensive lineman Keegan McBroom. Coach Holt and Coach Goodman will be doing their best to fill the holes in their roster with kids from all classes. They hope to carry on the energy from last year and get those wins.
