EVs gain on gas vehicles

Electric vehicles will hit 40% of global new vehicle sales by 2030 as cost, refueling time, travel range and charging stations will make them comparable to combustion vehicles in just two years, according to new research. Even with huge growth predicted in a paper by Morningstar analysts, sales will struggle to reach levels sought by governments as they seek to boost EV sales to cut greenhouse gas emissions In the European Union, for instance, all new vehicles sold must be zero emissions by 2035. Fuel economy regulations proposed in the U.S. would require up to two-thirds of new vehicle sales to be electric by 2032

Morningstar says people bought 8 million EVs worldwide last year. That s expected to reach 40 million in 2030 EVs should reach “cost and functional” parity with gas vehicles in about two years Analysts calculated cost of ownership by including purchase price, refueling, maintenance and insurance. They also looked at range per charge versus a tank of gasoline — about 300 miles Around a third of EVs can achieve that on one charge, with about 60% hitting 250. Morningstar expects enough chargers to be in place in two years to support EV growth.
