Big moves for bonds

for the stereotype of the “boring” bond market The $24.3 trillion market in U.S. Treasurys has swung massively since last month’s failure of Silicon Valley Bank. A closely watched measure of volatility recently hit its highest level since the 2008 financial crisis Not even during the 2020 COVID crash did the ICE BofAML MOVE index climb as high as it has the past month. Meanwhile volatility in the stock market remains below levels seen last autumn Government bond traders sent yields plummeting as they rushed to bet the Federal

Reserve would have to ease up on its rate hikes

That reversed previous expectations for further

Fed hikes as inflation remains high. This volatility may have unnerved investors who’d hoped for bonds to offer the steadier, safer returns they’re reputed for. A recent drop in the MOVE index could be an encouraging signal for stocks. A spike in the index has typically been seen around major market bottoms for stocks, according to strategists at RBC Capital Markets
