DEATHS

Heaven has received another angel. Barbara Ellaine “Barb” Swank passed away December 22, 2022 at 5:30 pm in her home surrounded by family, after a brave and hard-fought battle with cancer.

Barb came into this world January 15, 1967, a bright light born to Donald and Patricia Favor. Full of love for life, as a child she was mostly at home outdoors riding horses, playing in the dirt, and climbing trees. Barb graduated from Harrison County R-4 in Gilman City, class of 1985. That passion carried on through her life and she never lost her love for gardening, canning, and fishing. Each day was a new adventure, but she loved her family. Especially her husband, children, and grandchildren. Barb spent the last twenty years of her life loving her husband, Myrle Wayne Swank. She will always be remembered for her optimism and strength. That steady calm for her family and friends.

Barb was a member of the Shelburne Baptist church and their music di-

rector for multiple years. She was instrumental in directing the children’s music program and enjoyed every minute of singing with the community. She was also a talented musician playing piano, organ, and had a beautiful singing voice. She was an active member of the Christian Motorcycle Association CMA and a devout Christian. Barb was employed by Tucker Chiropractic Center and then Hunter White Chiropractic as an office manager prior to retiring in 2020.

She left behind her husband, Myrle Wayne Swank; her children, Danny (Rachel) King, Michael King, Matt (Carissa) Swank and Chasity (Tony) Ferguson; grandchildren, Kaleb King, Gregory King, Nathen King, Zac Ferguson, Nolan Ferguson, Halle Ferguson, Nate Ferguson, Brent Ferguson, Jace Ferguson, Victoria Swank, Traeh Swank and Mattee Swank; her mother, Patricia Favor; sisters, Judy Favor, Becky (Dave) Lyons and Pam (Eric) Padget; nieces and

Swank

nephews, Kaylie (Tim) Ridgeway, Brady Lyons, Karrissa Lyons, Brendyn Padget, Allyson Padget and Corryn Padget; and aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends.

She was preceded in death by Donald Favor. her father; Barbara Swank, her mother-inlaw; and Jacob King, her grandson.

Goodbye Barbie Girl as Myrle Wayne affectionately would call you. Save us a place for we will all be together again and finally our broken hearts will become whole.

Funeral Services were held at 1:00 p.m. today (Thursday, December 29) at the A. V. Spillman Event Center, 113 Broadway St., Jamesport MO, under the direction of Roberson Funeral Home of Jamesport. A private family interment will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery at Ridgeway.

Memorials may be made to the Grundy County Breast Cancer Support Group in care of Roberson Funeral Home, 503 S. Broadway, Jamesport, MO 64648.

Weekly Feature on Individuals or Organizations in our Area

VFW Post 919

The VFW Post 919 is focused on helping Veterans and providing educational programming and funding to the local area. They assist Veterans with VA claims and paperwork, transportation to VA facilities, and provide honors for deceased Veterans. The VFW also helps with educational programming for students, such as the Patriot Pen, Voice of Democracy, and Teacher of the year competitions and awards. They provide donations to various local organizations, a scholarship at North Central Missouri College, and allow the use of their building for downtown fundraisers. The post has been established for 90 years since May 5, 1932, and named after Joseph L. Norton, a former railroad man of Trenton killed in action on the Western Front 1918, WWI. Anthony Ralston, VFW Commander, said, “It’s a privilege to provide honors for deceased Veterans and their families and help Veterans obtain the medical needs they deserve.”

Along with their support locally through donations, activities, and scholarships, the VFW also petitioned and received the designation for a Purple Heart City and County that connects with Purple Heart Trail across the US to honor wounded Veterans. They also pro-

vide in-house personnel for PTSD help and evaluation for Veterans. In the future, the post would like to update the present VFW Post to an up-to-date facility that would be ADA handicap compliant and add room for office space for VA personnel for PTSD evaluation privacy. They would also like to add more room for file storage and the internet for transferring records and storage. In addition, they would also like to have a better and larger kitchen area for the post. Sam Smith, VFW Quartermaster, said, “It is our hope with the upgrade of the facility to accommodate the future generation of Veterans.”

Also, in the future, the post would like to place a memorial wall with all Grundy County Veterans listed from Civil War to the current at the WWI Memorial at Moberly park. The post would also like to establish the Grundy County Veterans Association as an auxiliary to supplement the existing post and members.

To learn more about the VFW Post 919, individuals can visit a Veterans Service Office at the Post two days a week. Individuals can also visit the Facebook page, VFW Post 919.

Companies are spending less to

of their own stock but one last burst may be primed to happen before the turn of the new year. After setting a record in the first three months of 2022, spending by companies in the S&P 500 on stock repurchases has been trending down for two straight quarters. It fell to $210 84 billion from July through September according to preliminary figures from S&P Dow Jones Indices. That’s down 4% from the prior quarter and a little more than 10% from a year earlier.

Investors tend to like buybacks, as long as there is no better use for the money that could help boost the company’s growth. By reducing the number of shares a company has

trading in the market, repurchases can goose a company’s per-share earnings, which helps its stock price Companies could instead return cash to shareholders by paying dividends, but that’s seen as a more longstanding promise that’s difficult for CEOs to get out of.

A flurry of buybacks may be on the immediate horizon, though. A new tax to be levied on certain buybacks by U.S. companies is scheduled to kick in on Jan. 1. To get ahead

Top five sports stories of the year

Bulldog football State qualifiers

TENNIS

The last few years for the Trenton Bulldogs football team were spent rebuilding. In the 2019-2020 season the Bulldogs were 2-8 with their only wins being against the Polo Panthers and the Maysville Wolverines. The next season they went 0-8 with their closest game being against Maysville. An improvement was made between the 20202021 season and the 20212022 season, when the Bulldogs went 5-6 on the season. During that season they played Brookfield twice. The first time the game went into overtime, and they lost; the second game was during the first round of district play where they defeated them 28-6. The upward movement of them having those wins during the 2021-2022 season set goals for them dur-

ing the 2022-2023 season.

The Bulldogs started out with a big first game where they defeated Brookfield 29-8. That opening game win continued throughout the season, and they took the win at the next six games. They where officially 8-2 on the season having seven more wins over Lathrop (35-0), Princeton (42-6), Putnam County (42-20), Milan (217), Polo (24-6), Maysville (34-0) and South Harrison (48-0). Their winning streak of seven games in a row came to an end when they played the Gallatin Bulldogs, who where also 7-0 at the time. During that game, Trenton found it difficult to put the ball in the endzone and eventually lost 6-46. They also took the loss when they played Lawson during the first round of districts where they came up just short with a score of 14-21, end-

ing their season.

The Trenton Bulldogs will be losing some important players for next season.

Seniors Sam Gibson, Tucker Otto, Ian Elbert, Coleman Griffin, Brody Polk, Dylan Spencer, Bo Meeker, Tim Kempton and Gaven Kelsall had a big impact on this year’s season.

With Griffin at quarterback, Coach Hixson will be looking to back up quarterback and current sophomore, Mason Rongey to fill his shoes. They will also be looking to Gabe Novak, a current junior, to continue his role on the field. There will also need to be people to step up into a defensive role and fill the shoes of the offensive roles in both the line and backfield. The Bulldogs will hope to continue their success of this season to the 2023-2024 season with a new and improved team.

The Lady Bulldogs tennis team went 4-7 on the regular season as a team. In the end two of the team’s strongest individual players came together to form a pair in the doubles division of Missouri tennis.

GOLF

The Lady Bulldogs of both Trenton and Gallatin had state qualifiers in this year’s state golf tournament. Trenton had two individuals qualify, Eliana Cowling and Reece Weldon, and Gallatin took a team to the state tournament, which consisted of Elle Copple, Courtney Crose, Madison Kirk and

Astrid Soriano and Lydia Leininger performed well in individual matches, but during districts Coach Ockenfels decided to pair them up in hopes they would go farther as a pair, and that they did. During the District tournament they won the championship match, play-

Hannah Critten. To qualify for the state tournament the girls first had to go through districts. Both Bulldog teams competed in the Class One District Three tournament, with Gallatin taking second as a team under Northeast, and Trenton’s team took sixth. Individual places for the district tournament for Trenton had Cowling placed 14th and Weldon tied for 15th . Gallatin’s

ing three sets, winning the first and the last. They then traveled and took first at sectionals as well, winning two sets there. Their winning streak came to an end when they faced the future state champions in the quarter-finals match of the state tournament.

individual placings included Copple first and Crose second; the other two contributed to the team score to be able to make it to the state tournament. They then made it to the state tournament where Gallatin’s team tied for sixth place. Individual placings for the tournament placed Copple eighth, Crose 11th, Weldon 45th, Cowling 61st, Kirk 66th and Critten 81st.

The Gallatin Bulldog team had a very successful season, led by a new coach and an athletic group of senior players. The Bulldogs went 11-1 on the season with their only loss being to the East Buchanan Bulldogs (6-14) during the State quarterfinals. Their successes on the season included GRC conference champions and District champions of Class 1 District 7.

The Bulldogs won all their regular season games, their closest game being against Putnam County (35-20). Other Bulldog

wins included: North Platte (51-16), Penney (40-0), South Harrison (46-6), Polo (46-8), Maysville (35-12), Milan (41-10), Trenton (466), and Princeton (FW).

The Bulldogs where lucky enough to play all their district and state tournament games on their home field. They won against Brookfield (42-6) and Putnam County (21-7) before taking on East Buchanan on a cold, snowy day in Gallatin.

Coach Holt was new to the Gallatin school district but was able to learn about his boys quickly and know exactly how to use their talents. Gallatin’s previous

seasons weren’t exactly failing seasons, but they were always just short of the state tournament. Gallatin will be graduating a big group of seniors this year that played big roles this season, including Ethan Adkison, Colt Baker, Isaac Bird, Logan Bottcher, Garret Dungy, Payton Feiden, Brett Hemry, Gabe Parker and Draven Wright. Coach Holt will be looking to patch the holes of the seniors in terms of speed, size and ability. All team responsibility will continue to fall on the shoulders of junior quarterback Peyton Baker and backup junior quarterback Boston Bell.

Grand River Conference Changes

The Grand River Conference is the current home of 16 schools including Trenton, Gallatin and Princeton. The GRC is divided into the East and West divisions by which type of football the school plays. The schools that play 11-man football are part of the eastern division and the schools that play 8-man football are part of the western division of the conference. The Princeton Tigers have elected to switch from playing 11-man football to 8-man foot-

ball and will begin their season as an 8-man football team in the 2023-2024 season. This will move all Princeton sports from the east side of the GRC to the west side.

The Grand River Conference will also be expanding in the future as well. Brookfield and Marceline will be joining the GRC after a long history of being part of a different conference for the longest time.

Brookfield will be moving from the Clarence Cannon Confer-

ence and Marceline will be moving from the Lewis & Clark Conference. This will stretch the GRC from 16 teams to 18, making the GRC one of the biggest conferences in Northwest Missouri. The next question schools will be looking at is if the conference will be split in half, separating the east and the west, or if schools will be looking to move to different conferences so that they don’t have long travel times and more teams to prepare for.
