Native American Heritage Month
In honor of Native American Heritage Month, North Central Missouri College spotlights student Jillian Hettinger. Jillian is an A+ Missouri scholarship student from Novinger, Missouri, and is currently a freshman studying psychology. After completing her degree at NCMC, Jillian plans to transfer to Central Methodist University to obtain a bachelor's degree in psychology, then work as a therapist while getting her master's, then doctorate. Jill would like to become a psychiatrist and open her own practice.
Jillian's Native American heritage is from both the Leach Lake Band of the Ojibwe tribe and the Cherokee tribe. Jill said about her heritage, "I love that my heritage holds such value in nature and has symbolic and ritualistic ways to honor nature. I love how beautiful the culture is, how they care and respect the earth and understand how it provides for them. They have such gratitude for the earth and give thanks for everything it provides, like having a good harvest." It's because of my heritage I
am more in touch with nature and appreciate the beauty of our world more.
Jill visits the Ojibwe reservations often for the rice festival and to participate in Powwow, where her grandmother is still a part of the tribe. Jill said, "my favorite tradition is the Powwows. I love the traditional music and clothes. I've danced in a Powwow before, and it's a very neat experience." She also loves seeing the birch trees that, in the tribe, hold significant importance, and the wild rice, which is the only place you can see it grow.
Jill said, "I think I view the world differently because of my people, and what they have been through has really made me appreciate the generation I grew up with. Not many reservations have as much land as they once had, but I am hopeful things can improve."
At NCMC, Jill is a student worker at the library, involved in book club, Business Club, Student Support Services, and First Gen Club, and lives on campus in the residence halls. Jill's favorite class

has been accounting with Ronda Copple. Jill said, "I've never worked with numbers, and it was good information to have. Especially on the business side of things." Jill chose NCMC because it was close to home, while still being far enough away to branch out on her own. Jill went on to say, "My favorite thing about NCMC is how close I am with all my friends."
National Native American Heritage Month is observed each November and celebrates and pays tribute to the ancestry and traditions of Native Americans. The dining room was decorated like the apothecary from Act V in the play. Members “visited” the apothecary and took home herbal and floral scented items such as candles, hand sanitizers, room refreshers, and fragrance sachets.
For lunch, members enjoyed creamy onion soup, rainbow salad with poppy
seed dressing, baguettes with dipping oil, vegetarian gnocchi with spinach and mushroom butter sauce, “marry me” chicken, and Southern praline pecan cake with butter rum glaze and spiced cream cheese frosting.
Following lunch, members played a hilarious party game based on the works of Shakespeare.

Mr. Hoffman attended NCMC (TJC-Trenton Junior College at the time) his freshman year (1969-70) and transferred to the University of Missouri School of Agriculture, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and a Masters of Agronomy.

Phil is not only a supporter of North Central Missouri College; he is also an advocate of everything that contributes to the improvement and advancement of

NCMC Announces Bill Ausmus Faculty/Staff Mini-Grant Recipient

North Central Missouri College Foundation announces the fall 2022 recipient of the Bill Ausmus Faculty/Staff Mini-Grant. The application approved for funding was titled, “Can you hear me now?” submitted by Director of Library Services, Dr. Beth Caldarello.

Applicants are asked to describe why the project is needed. “This project involves our Testing Center. We took over testing for NCMC and some our community members four years ago.
The Testing Center has grown and evolved. NCMC students are our first priority testers. If a student misses a class and the instructor requires the test to be proctored, they come to us. We

need more tools to ensure we can accommodate all of our testers to the best of our ability,” wrote Dr. Caldarello.
When describing how the success of the funded application would be evaluated, she wrote, “We will evaluate this by testers response to our Testing Center and their satisfaction with their testing results.”
“To date, the Bill Ausmus Faculty/Staff Mini Grant has awarded over $4200 to NCMC departments. The awarded applications may not have otherwise been funded without this grant opportunity through the NCMC Foundation for faculty and staff,” commented NCMC Director of Development Alicia Endicott. “We are honored that this fund was
established in honor and memory of Dean Ausmus, who was a great friend to NCMC.”
Bill joined Trenton Junior College in the fall of 1967 and retired from North Central Missouri College in 1987, at which time a fund was created to promote faculty/staff development at the college, and those funds have grown to allow a regular disbursement by the NCMC Foundation.
Those interested in contributing to the Ausmus fund or have questions regarding the NCMC Foundation can contact Executive Director Alicia Endicott at 660-3576403 or aendicott@mail.ncmissouri.edu.

Last month’s failure of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX appears to have put a long term damper on the cryptocurrency universe.

Since FTX failed on Nov. 11, bitcoin has fallen to below $17,500 apiece and remained below that price for the last three weeks. Ethereum, the other major cryptocurrency, has largely stayed below $1,300 apiece since FTX’s failure as well.
Crypto prices, which are already down significantly this year, are likely to remain depressed as this crisis of confidence works it way through the system, cryptocurrency analysts say. Before its failure, FTX was

the second-largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world and its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, was the industry’s “it-boy.”

FTX’s collapse likely will push more casual investors out of cryptocurrencies, JPMorgan analysts said in a note to investors, which will likely keep crypto values down as well.

This isn’t the first time a major failure has shaken the entire cryptocurrency world. Crypto prices took two sharp declines this spring and summer after the stable coin Terra Luna collapsed, followed by the collapse of the crypto lending firm Celsius.
