City approves increase to trash service rates by brett adkison leader editor

The Plattsburg City Council met Monday, December 11, to tackle an agenda packed with business. The meeting opened with a presentation of the city’s annual audit from Bob Conrad of Conrad and Higgins, who gave a positive

review of the city’s financial position. He said the city has an unrestricted reserve of approximately $3 million against $5 million in expenses, and he lauded the city for the sturdiness of its pension fund. He noted that the city has some outstanding checks (some of which are 15 years old) and

they’re working with city staff to find a way to clear those from the books. Terry Peterson, owner of Redgate Disposal, was on hand to request an increase in the rates the city pays Redgate for solid waste disposal. Peterson said that, much like everyone, inflation has hit them hard in recent months.

He added that they have a 3.5-percent increase built into the contract with the city that they could take annually, but Redgate seldom does so, otherwise the city’s rates would be much higher than they are now. During the Gower City Council meeting on Monday, December 11, the council approved the annexation of the state right of way along Route DD on the south side of the city limits. The property in question is the state right of way along Route DD from the city limit sign to County Line Road. The city proposed to annex this property into the city in anticipation of the new East Buchanan Middle School building, which the school district expects to build on its property known as the school farm. The annexation process included public notifications in The Leader in October, then a period for written opposition to this proposal, of which there were none submitted. Lastly, a public hearing was held on November 6 ahead of Monday’s vote. The council also received a petition from the East Buchanan School District for voluntary annexation of two tracts of land it owns totaling approximate-

Board approves subdivide, rezoning of land by jim bonebrake leader reporter

The Clinton County Planning and Zoning Commission met Thursday, December 7, to hear public comments on two issues before the board. The first hearing was a request by Kyle S. and Tina L. Long, who

were asking for approval of a minor subdivision of a 29.80-acre parcel into one 10-acre lot and one 19.80-acre lot, and to rezone both lots from AG-A to Ag-B. The property is located on the south side of NE 292nd St., east of 69 Highway, west of NE Tri-County Line Rd., in rural Cam-

eron. Certified letters were sent to nine adjoining property owners with none attending this hearing to voice objections or support for this request. After very little discussion, the board voted to approve this request for the rezoning of the two lots in question to Ag-B, 6-0. The second public hearing

dealt with changes and clarifications to current ordinances, including changes to the minimum width for manufactured and mobile homes; requirements and regulations around special use permits and public signage for applicants; changes to the right of use for pri||Continued on A2
