organization moves to downtown Lathrop
For the longest time, the Clinton County Senate Bill 40 organization has gone about its important work with little visibility in the public. But with a recent move to downtown Lathrop, residents are
beginning to take notice of SB40 and its mission.
The group’s working arm has spent the last several years at the Goppert Community Center in Lathrop, renting office space from the city. But it’s grown now to five staff members (an executive di-
rector, three support coordinators and an administrative assistant), requiring more room than the community center can provide.
SB40 recently made its new home at 705 Oak Street in downtown Lathrop (the former site of the Lathrop Medical Clinic), right

LATHROP City signs off on a new siren
The City of Lathrop will soon have a fourth storm siren covering the town, with its newest addition landing on the southwest side near Lathrop Elementary.
The Lathrop City Council approved a $25,000 bid for a new electronic siren from L&B Electronics during its regular monthly meeting in April. The municipality has received a Hazard Mitigation grant that will cover 90 percent of the costs.
The solar-powered siren will be located southwest of Lathrop Elementary near the former railroad tracks. The town has three other sirens in its system.

Gower Fire Dept. trains for grain bin incidents
On Saturday, April 22, eleven Gower fire volunteers and one from Faucett received training for potential grain bin accidents.
Lt. Angie Jones of the Maryville Fire Department provided the training, which included a classroom session with videos and slides and questions, as well
as a staged, hands-on mock rescue. Jones, who works with the University of Missouri Fire Rescue Training Institute, has conducted a couple dozen of these training sessions and stated that, statistically, most of these incidents happen to men between the ages of 40 and 70.
According to Gower Fire Chief Jon Roe, there has never
been an accident of this type in the area to his knowledge, but he wants his department to be ready if called upon for such a situation.
“We hope we never have to use this training, but we want to have our staff prepared to respond if the situation arises,” the chief said.
Chief Roe plans on doing this type of training annually to keep
the volunteers familiar with the needed equipment and receive any new information. The department has purchased some of the most up-to-date rescue tools, which include aluminum panels, an auger and ropes. The panels have handles attached on both sides, slide together and once in place they surround the victim. The auger is

space in Goppert for years,” said SB40 President Kendra Gagnon. “But this space is much larger, is in a historic building in downtown Lathrop, and is much more visible to the community. In the new space, each of our support coordinators has her own office (the three support coordinators previously shared an office). We also have a small conference room and a front desk/reception area. We are excited that the added space will give us a place to meet with our clients and our community partners, either privately or in groups, and may even allow us to host some small events in the future.”
She added that the new location will allow SB40 to better serve the community while sparking curiosity and interest in their mission.
Named for the 1969 state legislation that allowed for its formation, Senate
Bill 40 provides services and support for people of all ages with disabilities. In one effort, the group’s support coordinators provide individual case management for people with disabilities in Clinton County. In another, the group supports community efforts that keep Clinton County inclusive to people of all abilities. Some examples include assistance and financial support for numerous projects, including the recently-opened inclusive playground at Lathrop’s municipal park, the City of Gower’s ADA sidewalk project downtown and the therapeutic horseback riding program Dream Catchers in Cameron.
The group has also been a long-time supporter of Clinco, the sheltered workshop in Cameron, including a recent allocation of nearly $50,000 for a new van to transport clients with dis-
abilities.
Senate Bill 40 is funded through a pair of sources: a local, dedicated tax levy and reimbursements from Missouri Medicare funds for the group’s case management services. The SB40 board is comprised of nine members from throughout Clinton
County who are appointed by the Clinton County Commissioners.
SB40 Executive Director Jessica Clariday said she, too, wasn’t fully sure of the group’s purpose and efforts until she began working with SB40.
“What I have found in the almost five years I have been here, is that we provide services for some of
the most loving, deserving people I have ever met,” she said.
She said SB40 wants to connect with any families that could possibly benefit from their services.
“We work with so many great people within our community and we are always questioning who might not know about our services, and how we can make those

used to pump out the grain in the bin. This allows the victim to hopefully use the handles on the inside as hand holds and steps to eventually climb to safety. Only a couple, maybe three rescuers, would be actively involved in the bin in time of an accident.
Lt. Jones said that different grains act differently. Moisture content also adds another variable. However, in less than 10 minutes, someone trapped in a grain bin could be completely covered and suffocate.
To help reduce the risk in a grain bin, make sure an individual never enters a bin alone. Never let children play around or enter a grain
bin. The best insurance in these situations is to avoid potential problems; however, if one arises, be aware that the Gower Fire Protection District is ready to assist
connections within our communities,” she said. “We hope a new location will provide us with a comfortable space to welcome our current and future clients, as well as our local community members.”

The Clinton County Sheriff’s Department recently outfitted vehicle unit 710 with new soy technology tires from Goodyear through Pod to Pavement program. The tires, at no cost to the department, are environmentally friendly, meet high-performance standards and support Missouri’s growers of the top agricultural crop. They’re from Goodyear’s soy-based lines, where a portion of the tires’ petroleum content is replaced by renewable soybean oil. “We appreciate the opportunity to participate in this program,” Clinton County Sheriff Larry Fish said, “and for one more way in which we can support our local famers.” Fish said Clinton County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicles average 36,000 miles per year; tires are replaced after 25,000 miles.

A QUICK WORD Lathrop R-II sees major changes ahead of next year
Forget the four-day school week. The new high school and its sports complex. Even the pandemic, which shifted how we do everything in society.
In the last 25 years, the Lathrop R-II School District hasn’t faced a hurdle so important as the transition they’ll be making this summer.
Last week, we reported that Chanucey Rardon, a 20-year staple as the Lathrop Elementary School principal, had submitted his resignation to take a principal’s office in Kearney. His building has been the foundation for the district’s classroom success, and now Lathrop will have to find his replacement.
Rardon marks the third administrator to leave the school district after the 2022-2023 school year. Superintendent Chris Fine will retire at the end of this school year, and LMS Principal John Goodin is leaving to take a principal’s position in Kearney, too.
In total, the district has seen nearly two dozen resignations this school year, most being teachers.
Going back to last year, Lathrop R-II has received more than three dozen resignations.
All together, this historic exodus creates a vacuum. The remaining district leaders will need to fill vacancies with one eye on the 2023-2024 school year, and another on the overall culture, atmosphere and stability of the school district.
It’s a tricky task.
A decade ago, Plattsburg schools found themselves in a similar situation. Key departures and retirements among the administration and staff lit the fuse on a revolving door. The culture at the Clinton County R-III School District suffered. Even now, after the current leaders dug in their heels and stopped the spin and put Plattsburg back on a proper foundation, some fall out remains.
The district’s APR and MAP results are abysmal. But at least Plattsburg is in a position to attack the problem.
Luckily, Lathrop R-II has tapped Andy McNeely – who served as LMS principal before Goodin and is serving as the assistant high school principal currently – to lead the middle school. He and LHS Principal Robert Bowers will give the district valuable continuity.
Thanks to Chris Fine and his advanced notification on his retirement, Dr. Adam Willard, the next superintendent at Lathrop R-II, was hired last October, giving him an additional seven-months to learn the district and its needs. Board members Matt Holsted, Darrell Morgan and James Martin are experienced community leaders who have helped lead the school and other community organizations through tough times.
The Lathrop R-II School District has enjoyed a long period of relative success and stability –the kind that benefits not just the students, but the entire community. The coming months, then years, will determine whether the former mule capital can keep the good years rolling.

Kansas City’s downtown has hosted plenty of historic, can’tmiss entertainment opportunities, and I’ve been blessed to make my share. The most dynamic was the 1972 concert at Municipal Auditorium, when Elton John energized a sold-out venue with three encores, as the crowd didn’t want to stop the exciting performance. This preceded my excitement when I returned to the President Hotel’s parking lot to find my car had been stolen. The full story will be a chapter in the book.
My most recent entertainment opportunity was Travis and Jason Kelce’s “New Heights Live” podcast held Wednesday, April 26, at the Music Hall that adjoins Municipal Auditorium. Though their best talents are revealed more so on the playing field, the brothers know more than just winning football games. They now have gone to the airwaves to bring humor with locker room banter and brotherhood for all to enjoy. The weekly podcast show, which began this past September, has grown to become one of the most popular podcasts across the country.
If playing against each other in Super Bowl LVII wasn’t enough, they decided to bring their podcast as an opening act for the NFL’s three-day draft party at Union Station that began on Thursday, April 27.
And they didn’t disappoint.
Anything to do with the Chiefs becomes a hot ticket item, and their show was another example, with the 5,000 tickets gobbled up quickly. The lineup for the show was star studded, with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell opening the show, first introducing Jason Kelce and then Travis. Goodell’s go-to act includes taking full advantage of posing with them for a photoshoot.
Not to be outdone, Travis’s bearhug turned into lifting the
commissioner off the floor and spinning him around before returning him to solid footing. For those who think Goodell is a stuffed shirt, they soon learned why he has been commissioner for over 15 years (with a paycheck of 20 million). He knows how to enjoy the moment and be a part of the act.
There were plenty of local stars in the crowd, with Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid and his wife enjoying a center stage seat. He was joined by Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach. Kelce’s mother, Donna, was in the crowd, too.
Travis Kelce promised a fun-filled show. “We’ll have surprise guests, giveaways, and maybe we’ll even sign your baby.”
Again, they didn’t disappoint.
Both used large, air-powered cannons to shoot towels into the crowd. They didn’t always work as designed, so winging the towels by hand was a can’tmiss opportunity for the fans.
Joining them on their living room couch set-up on stage was comedian and Kansas City native Eric Stonestreet, as did Chiefs center Creed Humphrey and former Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez. This led to a bit in the show where Chiefs back-up quarterback Chad Henne joined them. They hyped Henne’s appearance be-
fore bringing on the guest everyone wanted to see, quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The roar from the crowd when he ran (yep the ankle is okay!) onto the stage was the loudest of the night.
Henne’s appearance allowed Travis Kelce to right a wrong from this past season, when Kelce tossed the ball from his touchdown pass from Henne into the Arrowhead crowd during the Jacksonville game. Apparently, it was Henne’s only touchdown pass in a playoff game.
Also in attendance that night was Jesse Eggers, who caught the touchdown celebration football from Travis Kelce. He was joined by his fiancée, Karly Riley.
Travis introduced Eggers, who produced the football and threw it onto the stage, which airmailed Kelce and was caught by Patrick Mahomes, once again proving Mahomes has a way of being in the right place at the right time. Kelce then passed a signed replacement football back to Eggers.
The hour and a half show closed out with Jason Kelce showing off his shaved head and wearing a diaper as part of fulfilling their bet before the Super Bowl.
Without a doubt, the Kelces fulfilled the expectations of the fans once again at the historic Music Hall. And the good
news? My daughter Liz’s car was still in the Hotel President parking lot.

PHS earns national sports safety honor
Plattsburg High School
is a recipient of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Safe Sports School Award for its athletic program. The award champions safety and recognizes secondary schools that have met the recommended standards to improve safety in sports. The award reinforces the importance of providing the best level of care, injury prevention, and treatment.
“Plattsburg High School is honored to receive this Second Team recognition from NATA,” said Plattsburg athletic trainer Blaise Kriley. “We remain committed to keeping our student-athletes safe during physical education classes, team practices, and games, so they can accomplish their
own goals of great competition, winning records, fair sportsmanship, and good health. Our goal is to lead our athletics program to the highest safety standards for our players.”
“The health and safety of student-athletes is critical, as it has both immediate and long-term effects,” said NATA President Kathy Dieringer, EdD, LAT, ATC. “The National Athletic Trainers’ Association created the Safe Sports School Award to recognize and champion schools nationwide that are committed to safety in sports. We are proud to see the list of award recipients grow exponentially each year as schools see the immense value in holding themselves to best prac-
tices and policies that ensure a high standard of athlete care.”
In order to achieve Safe Sports School status, as Plattsburg High School did, athletic programs must do the following:
• Create a positive athletic health care administrative system. Provide or coordinate pre-participation physical examinations. Promote safe and appropriate practice and competition facilities. Plan for selection, fit function and proper maintenance of athletic equipment.
• Provide a permanent, appropriately equipped area to evaluate and treat injured athletes. Develop injury and illness prevention strategies, including protocols for environmental conditions
• Provide or facilitate injury intervention. Create and rehearse a venue-specific Emergency Action Plan. Provide or facilitate psychosocial consultation and nutritional counseling/education. Be sure athletes and parents are educated about the potential benefits and risks in sports, as well as their responsibilities.
To apply, schools complete an in-depth questionnaire that assesses adherence to best practice standards and recommendations. For more information about the Safe Sports School Award, please visit www.athletictrainers.org.

West Platte sinks East Buchanan’s conference title hopes
Just one win away from splitting the KCI Conference championship with Lawson, the East Buchanan baseball team ran into an upset-minded rival on Thursday, April 27.
A two-run bottom of
the seventh by West Platte lifted the Bluejays to a 4-3 victory over East Buchanan in Weston, Mo., popping the Bulldogs’ title hopes in the process, as Lawson staved off Mid-Buchanan that same night 1-0 to win the crown.
Junior Gage Busby led East Buchanan with a three-
RBI performance. AdamStephen Engnes was two-forfour with a run scored and Mason Brown was two-forthree with a pair of runs. On the mound, Bronco Whitt allowed just five hits in six innings, but West Platte managed to draw seven walks out of the fireballer.
Two days earlier, East Buchanan teed off on Hamilton for a 12-0 victory in a mercy rule five-inning game. Eight different Bulldogs scored on the night. Busby went three-for-four with two runs scored and three RBIs. Mason Brown scored three runs and Max
Henry scored twice. Austin Cilke knocked in two RBIs and Blake Pryor knocked in three runs. On the mound, Cilke was smooth, giving up just two hits in five innings while striking out five batters.
The Plattsburg Tigers, meanwhile, played four
road games in four days last week, going 2-2. The Tigers had a rough go against Lawson on Tuesday, April 25, falling 10-0 to the eventual KCI champs. Jackson Lewis, Gavin Carter and Braden Brown each collected a hit for Plattsburg.

Lathrop, Plattsburg athletes win events
With 15 individual finishes in the top three on Saturday, the East Buchanan Bulldogs track and field team nearly sneaked past an old nemesis to win the KCI Conference Track and Field Championship.
The Bulldogs scored 159 team points at the conference meet on Lathrop High School’s Leroy Sater Memorial Track on Saturday, April 29 – just half of a point behind the KCI champion West Platte Bluejays (159 points). East Buchanan won individual conference titles in seven different events.
Meanwhile, on the girls side, East Buchanan earned 91.5 points to place fourth in a tough field. Lawson won the girls conference championship with 191.5 points.
Seth Spencer and Trevor Klein each won a pair of KCI titles for the East Buchanan boys on Saturday. Spencer won both the 110M hurdles (16.15 seconds) and 300M hurdles (43.11 seconds), while Klein was first in both the long jump (6.08 meters) and triple jump (12.22 meters). Trey Johnson won the KCI title in the javelin (51.42 meters) while taking third in the triple jump (11.6 meters) and

James Braddy signs with SWCC
In his lone year at Plattsburg High School, senior James Braddy proved to be the spark plug in the Tigers’ historic run to the Missouri Class 2 Final Four. Now he’ll be transitioning his game to the collegiate level.
Braddy signed his letter of intent Wednesday, April 26, at PHS, to play college basketball for Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa, beginning next year. Braddy said several factors attracted him to sign with Southwestern, including head coach Reggie Kindle, the players, the campus
and the great community in Creston.
A speedy and tenacious point guard, Braddy was exactly what the Tigers needed this year, joining a squad that already benefited from standout skills of junior Isaiah Howard, the senior leadership of Luke Schroed-

Congratulations to East Buchanan girls basketball coach Cori Elms, who was recently recognized with the John Wooden Legacy Award for Missouri from the National High School Basketball Coaches Association (NHSBCA). The award, in its first year, honors coaches that demonstrate excellence on the court and in the classroom as an educator, giving back to the game of basketball. er and Jackson Lewis, and the youthful talent of Rylan Langton. Braddy helped spur the Tigers to a 30-game winning streak, a nine-week run as Missouri’s top-ranked Class 2 team, and a thirdplace finish at the state championship.
On the way, Braddy swept up All-District, All-Conference and AllState Honors.
“He just brings the energy to any room he steps in,” said Plattsburg head coach Twydell Love, Jr. “It’s contagious on the floor and off the floor. We needed some personality with our group and I thought that was one of the biggest things that was eye-popping to us this year.”

The next day, Lutheran Kansas City also managed to shutout the Tigers, winning 2-0. Despite the loss, Hunter Risch was great on the bump, giving up just four hits in six innings while striking out seven batters.
The bats woke up on Thursday, April 27, as the Tigers swatted the Penney Hornets 11-2 in Hamilton, Mo. Brown, Keegan Gudde and Zach Annis each scored two runs. Jackson Lewis knocked in a pair of RBIs with a run scored. Gavin Carter earned the victory, striking out nine batters while giving up three hits in five innings. Wyatt Moran allowed just one hit while striking out three batters in two innings of relief work.
Plattsburg followed it up with an 11-1 win against University Academy on Fri-
day, during which Jackson Lewis was two-for-four with five RBIs and three runs scored. Hunter Risch and Keegan Gudde each scored a pair of runs and Braden Brown knocked in two RBIs.
The Lathrop Mules knocked around West Platte for a 6-1 victory on Tuesday, April 25, at LHS. Keaton Coots struck out three batters and allowed three hits in four innings, while Dylan Smith gave up three hits in three scoreless innings while working around four walks. At the plate, Mason Mudd scored a pair of runs and both Coots and Brendan Fine added RBIs. Coots, Ethan Noll, Griffin Schrunk and Shane Dodd each scored a run.
Two days later, Lathrop came up on the short end
that year with Coach T. “It’s a great community,” he said. “There was a lot of love shown all year, on and off the court. There have been packed-out houses and a great vibe. Everybody kind of rocks out together. Everybody treats you like family. It’s all one. It was a great year being here and it’ll forever be a part of me.”
of a wild seventh inning, as the Mules and North Platte Panthers combined for six runs. North Platte (which entered the inning leading 5-2) was able to escape with a 7-6 victory. Grady Miller allowed six hits and four walks while striking out four batters in five innings. He allowed just one earned run.
Cole Chapman and Griffin Schrunk contributed a run and an RBI, each.
The Mules ran into a buzzsaw on Friday, as Richmond held them to just two hits in a 4-0 loss. Ethan Noll was otherwise strong on the mound. He allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out six batters in seven innings. Lathrop suffered from five errors in the field.
