The Plattsburg City Council had an eventful meeting last Monday, January 8, as they heard more than an hour of public comments to open the evening. Linda Brooks spoke to the council. She said Plattsburg has a great downtown, but the city does things to trash it up. She was told at the last meeting that the dumpsters would be moved off Broadway at the first of the year, and they weren’t. Among her concerns was the privately-owned fence on city property in the alleyway behind the west side of Main Street, the duties of the city inspector and the number of cops in the police department. She feels there are too many officers and suggested one of the positions be made a full-time city inspector. She said she will be back each month until the dumpster and alley situation is resolved. Mayor James Kennedy told her the Chamber of Commerce has brought up the need for more parking and public restrooms downtown. He said he previously suggested the city offer a fair-market price for

tice football field, with the practice field being moved to the south. There were no members of the community present to ask questions, and after a short presentation from Superintendent Dr. John Newell, the council voted 3-0 to approve the request. There will be a 14-day waiting period for any opposition to be heard, and if none is submitted, the council will then be able to vote to

formalize the request for the annexation at its next council meeting in February. During the regular city council meeting, the council received an update on the SS4A Grant, as well as the MoDOT TAP request. Mayor Kenny Pike informed the council that MoDOT had received the estimate for the new sidewalk to be built along Railroad St., and that federal funds have been autho-

rized for the project. Mayor Pike also said that the first estimates in November of 2022 came in at $248,000 for the project, and the current estimate for this project was now about $195,246, which is good news for the city. The next steps will be for MoDOT to advertise this for two weeks on their website and for the city to run notices in the St. Joseph News-Press.
