Pandemic comes to a close after three years

Though COVID-19’s official designation as a public health emergency has drawn to an end this month, the virus is expected to play a small-but-continual part in American life for some time to come.

COVID was especially difficult in Clinton County, which spent much of the pandemic (beginning in the winter months of 2020) as the deadliest county per capita in Missouri. Ultimately, Clinton County is closing out the pandemic era having suffered 120 deaths and 5,699 confirmed cases for a population of approximately 21,000 people.

New cases are likely to continue, but Clinton County Health Director Blair Shock said that those counts are tough to quantify now, as the availability of at-home testing increased as the pandemic progressed.

Shock said that, as health department officials transition away from emergency response and back to regular operations, there are some key points that people should

COMMUNITY

The inspirational Cory Wohlford passes at 60

A multitude of teammates, competitors, players past and present, friends and family gathered at Grace Community Church in Smithville on Tuesday to show their respect for Coach Cory Wohlford, who passed away on Wednesday, May 10, at his new town home in Smithville.

The identical twin son of the late Jon and Rebecca Wohlford of Trimble, Cory left a distinguished mark on the playing field as a youth and later as an assistant coach for 35 years for the Smithville Warriors. As remarkable as his achievements were on the playing field for Plattsburg High School and William Jewell College, it was the impact that he had

on the players he coached from his wheelchair that was recalled at this funeral service on Tuesday, May 16.

During the funeral service, his twin brother Chris spoke of them discussing some very important decisions that needed to be made. Cory was facing the end of his life, and plans for the funeral needed to be arranged. Chris recalled how

they needed to determine where to hold the services, since the Paradise Methodist Church would not be big enough.

“I told him his church in Paradise would not hold the crowd.

‘You are a pretty big deal,’” Chris said as he wiped away his tears.

A ‘pretty big deal’ was an understatement, as hundreds attend-

Gower City Council approves rezoning on Fourth Street

The Gower City Council approved a rezoning request from Danny Musser during its meeting Monday, May 8, at Gower City Hall. The request was to rezone a lot (located on Fourth Street just north of Whitney Street) from R-1 to R-2.

Mr. Musser said he plans to build a duplex for rental properties under Musser

Properties, LLC. The city’s planning and zoning board recommended approving the request, and the city council voted unanimously, 3-0, in its favor.

In other council business, during an update on the MoDOT sidewalk grant project, Mayor Ken Pike stated that the sidewalk plans are being drawn up and will be submitted to MoDOT for their approval.

The council also received an update on the Safe Streets for All Action Grant. The process has been started and city officials are waiting on the highway department for further information.

The council decided at this time not to pursue an opportunity to purchase four lots to the west of the city maintenance barn for a price of $20,000, since it did not appear that this property was

Bowers Hired, Continued from Page A1

“As a teacher, I was able to make a difference in the classroom, but I’m excited to make a difference on a much larger scale, impacting over 400 students in the building,” she said. “The amount of support I have already received from the staff and community has confirmed that this was the right move, both for myself and for our district.”

Bowers graduated from Green City High School in 1998 and then Graceland University (B.S. in elementary education) in 2002. She earned a masters in educational leadership from William Woods University in 2005 and a masters in educational technology from Webster University in 2008.

She taught third grade at Green City from 2002 to 2004 before teaching first grade (and one year of Title 1 reading) from 2004 to 2021. She then came to Lathrop R-II. She said she

feels lucky to have taught at Lathrop the past two years, gaining insight into the building’s needs and strengths.

“I believe change is a good thing and there is already a buzz of excitement in the building for next year,” she said. “We’ve started making plans to improve some of our existing programs and curriculum, as well as ideas for celebrating student success and increasing community involvement. Education is all about building relationships, so my focus for our entire building will be to forge strong relationships among the staff, students, and community.”

Though teaching couples are common, administrative couples are less so. Stephanie said she and Robert, her husband of 12 years, make a good team.

“My husband and I have always used each other as sounding boards when

it comes to ideas for school, so we are looking forward to being able to do that even more as administrators in the same district,” she said.

“Now, don’t get me wrong. There will definitely be some friendly competition, too, so he better be ready to bring his A-game!

She added that Robert has cultivated a strong culture at the high school and she hopes to have the same success at LES. She said she’s blessed to have his support, as well as that of the rest of the administrative team at Lathrop R-II. She and Robert have been married for 12 years and have five children: Lathrop graduates Alexandria and Jillian, Lawson graduates Wyatt and Ethan, and McKinlee, a junior at Lathrop. They have two grandsons, Brayden (four years old) and Koe (seven months old).

The council approved a recommendation from Snider and Associates for the water line project and the city will need to work out the contract for the project.

The council chose to table a discussion on possible water and sewer rate increase until after they hold a work session for the budget for the

upcoming fiscal year. That workshop was held on Monday, May 15.

The city’s budget hearing will be held on Monday, June 12, at 6:45 p.m., just prior to the normal monthly council meeting.

Department reports were given by department heads with no significant issues reported. The council discussed the gazebo at Gower City Park, where repairs will have

know.

“COVID-19 is not going away,” he said. “It will remain a part of our lives for the foreseeable future and continues to pose a risk to the health of people throughout the world. That risk has significantly diminished compared to when the virus first emerged. That said, about 200 Americans continue to die from COVID-19 weekly, and it is in our interest to take steps to reduce our risk, including being vaccinated. This is especially true for persons who are older or immunocompromised.”

As the public health emergency comes to its end, Shock said it’s hard to fully express his thoughts on the pandemic, which was,

at times, a contentious issue throughout the country. Shock said it would be easy to focus on the negative, but rather turned his attention to the positives that came from community cooperation.

“Our relationships with and among our educational institutions, volunteer organizations, and faith-based organizations within the county and region developed and blossomed due to our cooperative work during the pandemic,” Shock said. “While we had relationships with many of these organizations before the pandemic, those relationships are significantly more robust than they have been historically. ed the visitation on Monday evening, standing in a long line outside the large church auditorium. Another large crowd came Tuesday to pay their respects, including members of the Smithville football team, who traveled by bus to attend the funeral wearing their green and white jerseys.

During his eulogy, Chris made sure to offer praise for everyone who had cared for his brother, especially over the past year. He thanked Cory’s girlfriend, Brenda Norton, who for the past 14 years had been by his side.

Chris shared stories of how they competed in multiple sports in their younger years.

“Most of our lives have revolved around sports, so it was a good thing our dad was a sports equipment salesman.”

This brought laughter from the crowd.

“We pitched to each other for hours as we grew up, and as I remember, Cory was not a very good umpire,” he recalled.

“We then would switch to basketball, where we played to 100 and that was before the three-point shot.”

He said that Cory picked out the songs, and a couple would not work. But they decided to begin with the Vince Gill song, “Go Rest High on That Moun-

tain,” a song that Gill wrote when his brother died. That was followed by “In the Garden,” “Well Done,” and “I Can Only Imagine.”

Minister Jerry Middleton started the funeral by reading the obituary, and then sharing some of his thoughts about Cory, and his family’s relationship with the Wohlfords. He said that sports played an important role in their lives, and Cory and his coaching affected thousands of young men in

ty for years in the future positively, not just within the sphere of health, but for numerous other initiatives that will improve the quality of life in our communities.

“During the most challenging times, it was also refreshing to be reminded of why we choose to live in our rural communities. From neighbors ensuring that neighbors were taken care of while they were sick, to making sure that those who were ill with COVID were able to vote during elections, the breadth of work that people of all walks of life undertook to ensure that their friends, families, and communities were taken care of was and will forever be inspiring to me.”

a positive way.

“Cory was a giant in that field,” Middleton said. “As a coach and mentor.” Paradise Methodist Church Pastor Rob Ernest closed the services. He recalled how he and Cory talked about sports and faith, as well. Pastor Ernest said that Cory had fought the good fight, and had crossed home plate many times, crossed the goal line and had finished the race, breaking the tape in record fashion.

Memories of the ‘79 Tigers and the late Ken Rafferty

You know you’re growin’ older when... You understand that the hardness of the butter is proportional to the softness of the bread.

The memory of the magical 1979 football season for the Plattsburg Tigers is being recalled by local fans as they remember the quarterback of the team, Cory Wohlford.

Cory’s life was changed because of a car accident in 1985 that left him bound to a wheelchair until his passing May 10, 2023.

In researching the 1979 issue of The Leader, I found a picture that brought the semifinal game against Stockton back to life. The photo was taken by my father, the late Skip Tinnen, publisher of The Leader, who loved to be part of the action on the field – often too close for comfort, as he dodged players from his view on the sidelines. One of

his favorite referees was the late Ken Rafferty, 93, who passed away recently.

Ken was a dedicated high school football official for 47 years and was highly regarded as the head official for this state semifinal game. He was a Northwest Missouri football rules interpreter and a MIAA and Heart of America Conference college football official. He was honored to referee Chiefs’ practices for a few years.

He was born in Carrollton, Mo., but throughout his life he was a busy guy, making a difference every stop along his path. Raised on a dairy farm, he went on to serve three years in the U.S. Air Force in the 435th Fighter Bomber Squadron and was stationed in England, Germany, and Africa.

As if loading nuclear bombs onto planes during the Cold War wasn’t exciting enough, he also was a dirt track sprint car racer at

Sportsmans Speedway in Marshall, Mo., and a Golden Gloves boxer.

Ken worked as an agent for New York Life, then went to work for a mortgage life insurance company and traveled throughout Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee. He then joined Hardin Savings Association and worked for Cameron Savings and Loan for 19 years.

He was an inventor and later joined a friend to form Rieadco, which patented the Night Bobby, a lighted fishing bobber.

It’s no surprise that he was involved with his community. He was a member of the school boards in Hardin and Cameron, where he served a term as president. Ken was a Rotarian, Shriner and was proud to have earned his 50-year pin as a Mason, Vincil Lodge #62. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Cameron.

Ken served as a board mem-

Keeping communism at bay

Our country has been complacent for decades allowing communists and Marxist regimes to infiltrate our government and institutions. Senator McCarthy was right in the early 1950s, recognizing communism was starting its incubation.

First academia was attacked, coercing professors then students with communist ideas.

Communism is godless secularism while the party is a religion. It dominates people (masses) which must comply with its dictates.

Remember the ruthless killing of baby girls for years, Mao Zedong’s massacre at Tienanmen Square, and now the genocide of the Uyghars. Even business is oppressed, restricted, and fined. This is a regime at your doorstep.

George Soros is another conspirator whose philosophy is deeply embedded in the U.S. and other countries. He is the traitor of the Jewish people. His reach is worldwide with an endowment of multi-trillions. He is

supporting left-wing political positions throughout our states with his Open Society Foundation Fund.

The infiltration is massive. Just follow the money.

Investigator Trevor Loudon uncovered 31 treacherous congressional officeholders.

One of his books, “The Enemies Within,” presents evidence and footnotes. Listed are Chuck Schumer, AOC, Talib, Arizona’s Sinema and others.

The corruption continues. The Clintons, the Biden crew, and mastermind Obama. All need a special archive reveling their bad acts. Trace Obama’s early Chicago history. His association and friendship with the Ayers, the terrorists who bombed the Pentagon and tried the same on the Twin Towers.

The deception of our operatives running our government is so problematic. The goal must be to destroy all trust in our officials and agencies or beyond that de-

stroy our country. Economically they have us in quicksand. We saw the lies about COVID, the election and January 6 set-up.

Now Jay Powell and the Federal Reserve deceived us again. Three banks are belly-up because of poor oversight by the Federal Reserve and he states the balance is stable. PacWest, Western Alliance and many regionals are suffering. Our FDIC is about bankrupt.

The Federal Reserve, our government, and other countries are planning a digital I.D and digital currency. If these are instigated, they will have total control of our monetary system and we lose personal freedoms. Talk to or email your representatives and everyone else. This must be stopped now!

Trust in our government has evaporated. We must stand firm and trust God Almighty, for He will bring justice to all.

ber of the former Cameron Community Hospital and as a foundation member of the Cameron Regional Medical Center for 50 years.

In addition to greeting Ken before officiating Plattsburg football games, I got to know him better when serving on the Cameron Regional Medical Center’s operating board. His vision led CRMC to purchase land to build the new hospital on I-35, which provides access to medical care for Northwest Missouri.

It’s obvious from his many accomplishments that Ken lived more than one life. They say a cat has nine lives; Kenny was a very cool cat.

The photo (above) was followed by the opening kickoff to Plattsburg’s Troy McKay, who returned it for a touchdown. Those who know Plattsburg football history also know that John Gassman’s father, Frank, was so excited about the opening kickoff. For some reason, he

was positioned behind the stands, and when McKay took off, so did Frank, running full steam all the way to the end of the bleachers.

The Tigers went on to beat Stockton, and then defeated Marceline 12-7 at Busch Stadium St. Louis for the state championship.

Food for thought: “The problem with the gene pool is there are no lifeguards.”

Debt Ceiling Shenanigans

Joe Biden and Kevin McCarthy walk into a room to discuss the nation’s budget.

Biden says, “What took you so long? I had my budget ready two months ago.”

McCarthy says, “I had to wait until Marjorie, Jim and the other MAGA folks told me what to do.”

“And?”

McCarthy pulls out an AR-15 and places it on the table in front of him. Engraved on it are the words: “The Debt Ceiling.”

“If you don’t agree to our demands, I’m going to shoot him with The Debt Ceiling,” McCarthy says, and points to a giant strapped to a chair in the corner.

“You’re going to shoot the Economy?” Biden asks incredulously.

“That’s right.”

“Why? What are your demands?”

“We don’t know for sure yet. But there will be massive spending cuts in the budget.”

THE CLINTON COUNTY LEADER

“Like what?”

“I don’t know. Medicaid, agriculture, veterans’ health care, the infrastructure bill. That kind of stuff.”

“Why?”

“Because the national debt is ruining the Economy.”

“Let me get this straight. You think shooting the Economy will save the Economy?”

“I don’t want to. But you’re holding the Economy hostage and we have to stop you.”

“What? I’m not holding the Economy hostage. You’re the one with the gun. Can’t you just put it away and we can calmly negotiate a budget?”

“No. My MAGA folks say no.”

“Well, when Trump was president, the national debt rose by $7.8 trillion in large part because of the tax cuts for the wealthy you guys passed. Back then, you didn’t threaten to shoot the Economy with the Debt

Ceiling.”

“That was different. He’s our guy and we like tax cuts for the wealthy.”

“But if you shoot the Economy with the Debt Ceiling, it will ruin the world’s faith that the United States will always pay its debts. No one will want to lend to us and interest rates will go sky high. It will ruin the Economy, not save it.”

“I don’t care. We didn’t cause the debt.”

“Yes, you did! The current debt is for spending that both Republican and Democratic Congresses approved.”

“So?”

“So if you don’t raise the debt ceiling, the Treasury can’t write any checks. Everyone in the country will be hurt. Do you really want to make voters suffer because of your MAGA folks?”

“I don’t know. I’ll have to ask my MAGA folks.”

Tender-hearted, generous, loving and kind. Always researching, seeking innovative ideas and fun stuff. He was one of the first in the area to get a virtual reality headset called the Oculus Rift. When 3D printers were beginning to appear and with a great price tag attached, he ordered a kit to make his own to save money. He assembled it, set up the programming and it worked great. In his house, he had it set up to turn on lights, change their colors with Alexa, and do so much more. He had so many ideas and things he accomplished with technology.

Three resign from Lathrop R-II

The Lathrop R-II School District will have a new food service provider for the 2023-2024 school year.

The Lathrop R-II Board of Education voted Wednesday, May 10, to approve a bid from Taher, Inc., to provide school meals for the next five years. There were three bids for the work, including OPAA! (Lathrop’s current food service company) and Southwest Foodservice Excellence (SFE).

Lathrop R-II Superintendent Chris Fine projects that the district will save approximately $100,000 over the course of the five-year agreement by switching to Taher, which had lower average prices through the term of the contract than the other two bids.

“We haven’t had more than one bid for our services for a while, so it was nice to finally have some other companies get involved in order to have some options available,” Fine said. “All of our school improvement focus groups recently mentioned improving the school’s food service program. Being in an expense reduction mode, I didn’t know if we’d be able to make a change without increasing costs.

When one of the bids actually came in lower than our current provider, we felt we had to do a little more research. After checking with other Missouri schools who have switched to Taher, we felt like they were going to be a great fit for us.”

The district has received three more teacher resignations – Bethany Balke (third grade), Jessica Hartman (fifth grade) and Katy Foster (fifth grade). Balke and Hartman are both taking teaching jobs in Liberty, while Foster is taking a position with the Kearney school district.

Supt. Fine said that the teacher shortage has triggered a cycle that has hit the school district hard.

“Between retirees and people getting hired in suburban schools where they can make 20to 30-percent more than they do here, it’s tough. We have always had teachers applying to get on in those higher-paying schools, but now, with the shortage all of those schools needing more teachers, ours are getting more opportunities. Add to that that more schools to our north are going to a four-day schedule, and some of them are taking advantage of extra state funds to move

up to a starting salary of $38,000. All of that means we are losing some of the extra benefits we once could use to attract teachers.”

Fine said the resignations have been especially difficult at the elementary.

Roy Adams, the longtime district maintenance director, has also announced that he’ll be retiring at the end of the school year.

The board approved the plan for Career Ladder next year, increasing the pay caps for Stage 1 ($1,500) and Stage 2 ($3,000), while adding in Stage 3 at a $5,000 cap. For this year, the district allocated $65,000 for Career Ladder (which supplementally pays teachers for additional student contact hours) but spent $48,455. Nearly 40 teachers participated for 2,475 hours. District officials expect the increase to result in a $30,000 increase in the program’s allocation.

The school board also received a presentation that night from LHS students Brody Spear and Lucas Quinn, who won the FBLA state championship in graphic design and will be traveling to Atlanta to compete at nationals.

Training Day at Sam’s

When emergency personnel arrive on scene, it’s vital that they have some hands-on knowledge of the situation. Members of the Kearney Fire Department received some real-life training on Saturday, as Sam Swindler, owner of Sam’s Auto Body and Glass in Lathrop, allowed the department to use cars from his lot on Locust Street to prepare for their vehicle accident responses, including stabilizing vehicles and extracting passengers.

DISTRICT BASEBALL

Lathrop upsets state-ranked Cards

All three local teams to play for district titles

The Lathrop Mules baseball team is back in a district championship game, knocking off a stateranked rival despite being seeded just fourth in their district tournament.

The Mules (10-15) upended the top-seeded Lawson Cardinals (19-6) in the Class 3, District 15 semifinals at Lathrop High School on Tuesday night, 5-1, to move on

to the district title game against third-seeded East Buchanan on Thursday, May 18, at 5 p.m.

Before making the semifinals, the Mules first had to win a play-in game against fifth-seeded Lexington last Friday – a game Lathrop won handily, 10-0. In that game, senior Brendan Fine went two-for-three with three RBIs, Carson Carver was two-for-three with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored, Cole Chapman scored three

times, and Max Gagnon added two RBIs and two runs scored. Grady Miller and Dylan Smith combined to allow just one hit and no walks in five innings while striking out six Minutemen.

East Buchanan (19-4) found themselves locked in a defensive battle against second-seeded Lafayette County on Tuesday in Lathrop, ultimately advancing with a 1-0 victory in extra innings.

Austin Cilke scored the winning run for the Bulldogs, while veteran pitcher Bronco Whitt tossed six scoreless innings.

The Plattsburg Tigers will also be playing for a championship down in Class 2, District 15. The second-seeded Tigers dispatched West Platte 7-2 on Tuesday night to advance to the title game, where they’ll face top-seeded North Platte at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, at Perkins Park in Plattsburg.

Senior Jackson Lewis was two-for-three with a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs in the game, while Braden Brown was three-for-four with four RBIs. Wyatt Moran added two hits and a run scored. Hunter Risch was dealing on the mound, allowing just two hits and three walks in the complete-game victory. He struck out nine batters.

Tigers were seventh on the day and will send a young contingent to the state championships in Jefferson City. Freshman Letecia Howard leads the way, as she qualified in four events. She was second in the 400M run (1:00), fourth in the high jump (4’10.5”), and was a member of both the second-place 4x400M relay (Schmitten, Parra, Nelson, Howard – 4:11) and the third-place 4x200M relay (Bingham, Schmitten, Parra, Howard – 1:47).

Isabella Parra also punched her ticket to state with a fourth-place finish in the high jump (33’4”).

Plattsburg senior Carson Stockdale will end his prolific high school running career on the state’s biggest stage, advancing with a third-place finish in the 400M (51.11) and as a member of the second-place 4x100M relay (Stockdale, Boyle, Braddy, Bingham – 44.24 seconds). Donte Bingham was also third in the 100M run with a time of 11.23.

The Lathrop Lady Mules qualified for state track in three events. Avery Patton took second in the high jump at sectionals (5’2”), Autum Nichols was third in the discus (98’9”) and the 4x400M relay team (Clapp, Schrunk, Seeley, Beane) took fourth with a time of 4:17.

Perry Earns Major Scholarship 2023 East Buchanan Art Show

On Friday, May 5, the East Buchanan School District had its 18th annual K-12 and Community Art Show. There were over 2,000 pieces of artwork from kindergarten through 12th grade, and nearly 60 artworks from six local artists. It was very well attended, with hundreds of people attending the show.

The K-12 show was judged by former East Buchanan student Kloe Miller,

who brought 10 artworks for display. She is a student at MU, and is an art major there. Ribbons were awarded to a few artworks per grade level, with one rosette ribbon given to one artist per grade level that was the “Best of Show.”

In addition, the public was encouraged to vote for favorite K-12 artist and favorite community artist. Mrs. Kristin Meyer is the art teacher for the elemen-

The cannon that once sat in the city park in Turney, MO was sold for scrap in 1942 but never made it to the smelter. We are trying to fill in the blanks of the cannon’s history.

What we think we know:

• Located in Turney from 1888-1942

Harry Kennedy’s father was Lemuel Kennedy who served in the Missouri Militia during the Civil War

• Harry Kennedy was first cousins with J.T. Anderson, both worked for the CBQ Railroad

• Harry’s name was James Henry Kennedy

• The Kennedy’s family left the area for Kansas in the late 1800’s leaving the cannon behind

• The Cannon is a 1861 Woodruff gun issued to the 10th Illinois calvary on duty in Springfield, MO in the spring of 1862. The calvary was issued 6 of these guns

• The Woodruffs stayed with the 10th Illinois until being exchanged for another cannon in 1864 at Fort Davidson in Pilot Knob, Mo

• Confederate General Sterling Price invaded Missouri in September 1864 and sacked Fort Davidson taking two woodruff guns with him and destroying the remaining two

• The two Woodruffs traveled with Price and the Confederates until being recaptured by the union on October 25, 1864 in Trading Post, KS

• The trail goes cold until LB Sheldon is mentioned in the 1933 Cameron Sun Article firing it off 45 years earlier (1888)
