Jefferson Highway, Continued from Page A1 he worked to see that the Jefferson Highway would break out of its shadow and into the light of history.
“I spoke with John George. He recommended I talk to Keith Clements, and Keith told me about Stan Hendricks of Cameron,” recalled Wood. “Hendricks spoke to our group, and we decided to take on the promotion of the Jefferson Highway. I approached the Plattsburg City Council about funding the purchasing of signs to place around Plattsburg. (Former) City Administrator Greg Harris and (former) Mayor Schauer showed some interest, and a few months later they came to our meeting and agreed to pay for the signs.”
Mr. Wood contacted the Jefferson Highway Association and learned there was no official sign for Missouri. The association helped design the signs and they were printed. Knowing the commitment from the City of Plattsburg to pay for the signs, he went on to apply for a grant through the Jefferson Highway Association to fund additional signage.
“Just in case we received the grant, I went to the county commissioners with a request to place Jefferson Highway signs in Cameron, and also in Trimble,” he said. “They approved, but we had to pay for the signs.”
