Election will decide whether to move EBMS

After consulting with its patrons, the East Buchanan C-1 School District is poised to make history and move its middle school from Easton to Gower, but voters
More than 1,700 Clinton Countians hit the polls Tuesday to help decide school and city leadership and important tax issues throughout the area.
Sales taxes on the recreational purchase of marijuana gained widespread support, with the county’s proposed three-percent tax passing 1,252 to 465, according to the unofficial results. Gower’s marijuana tax passed 120-34 (Clinton and Buchanan County vote totals) and Plattsburg’s marijuana tax passed 155-42.
While Lathrop didn’t put forward a marijuana tax, the municipality did propose a one-percent sales tax to fund street improvements on Tuesday, which passed 152-62.

will have the final say this August.
In a letter from Superintendent Dr. John Newell on Monday, March 27, the district announced its intention to place a proposed levy increase on the August ballot to fund the construction of a
new middle school in Gower. The school board intends to finalize the ballot language and the exact levy amount when it meets again on April 17.
Dr. Newell explained to The Leader that the district intends to
use a lease-purchase format to fund the construction. He said with the district’s current funding, it would only be able to borrow approximately $4 million – well short of the $13 million to $15 million that

Students at East Buchanan Elementary School in Gower blended history with a little bit of fun on Friday, March 31, with the annual wax museum of famous Missourians. From sports to science, military service to literature, the wide range of portrayals showed how important the Show-Me State has been to the world.
On Saturday, April 1, the Gower Fire Protection District celebrated its 30th anniversary with a reunion for former volunteers and an open house for the gen-
eral public.
Established in 1993 by former fire chief Sam Thompson and 11 volunteers with four trucks, the district began as an association where property owners subscribed for the
service.
The district has grown, moving into its current station off 169 Highway in Gower and expanding to today’s fleet of three trucks, two brush trucks, one rescue truck and one
command vehicle. There are currently 23 firefighters and a three-member diving rescue and recovery team. It was also where the first night exercise drill was held for emergency management in the state of
Missouri.

former Trimble Fire Chief Mike Shryock with giving him guidance and information to begin the journey.

will be needed for the project. The district’s current total levy is $5.22 per $100 assessed, which is used to fund the overall operations. In the letter, the district projects that most taxpayers would see a $200 to $300 increase to its taxes, annually.
Dr. Newell added that if the district had gone with bonded debt over the lease-purchase option, it would both cost more for the taxpayers and provide less money for construction.
Throughout the process, the district has gone to great lengths to ensure residents have their say in the project, including surveys and community meetings in both Easton and Gower. In the letter, the district announced that it received 677 responses to its survey, of which, 54 percent preferred building a new middle school in Gower. That’s in comparison to 17 percent favoring renovating the current building in Easton, 15 percent want-
the nod. They beat out Michael Burton (172 votes) and Angela Trevino (173 votes). Those results include votes from both Clinton and Clay Counties.
Clinton County R-III also had a two-year seat for a vacated position, with

ing to build new in Easton, and 14 percent that wanted to renovate existing district buildings in Gower to house the middle school.
Dr. Newell said that community involvement has been extremely important in the process, stating that the district belongs to its members, and leaders want to work together with patrons to create solutions and meet the needs of the community.
“Ultimately, the members of the district will de-

Lathrop R-II had three seats to be decided among five candidates. Jen Lanning (257), Darrell Morgan (215) and James Martin (201) were elected, with William Dietrich (169) and T’keya
Hope (121) trailing. Those counts include votes from both Clinton and Caldwell County.

termine the future of this project at the ballot box,” said Dr. Newell. “I want to put forward a proposal that many will have had a part in crafting. And the importance goes beyond the ownership of being a part of the process; the collective is always stronger than the individual. No single person or small group has all of the answers.”
Even if the proposed levy fails in August, it would give the district some direc-

tion in handling the existing building in Easton. To continue in its purpose, East Buchanan Middle School will need major renovations, including an overhaul of its HVAC systems. If voters turn down the ballot measure, district officials expect to use its existing resources to address the needs in Easton.
Should the measure be successful, the district will need to decide on a location for the new East Buchanan
Middle School in Gower. Dr. Newell said there are several avenues that could be pursued, including the possibility of acquiring land around the existing Gower campus, using part of the 60 acres of district-owned property west of Fourth Street, or determining whether creative ways exist to use the district’s current footprint. Once the ballot language is finalized, the district plans to host information sessions on the proposal.
over Travis Brooks (29) and Gary Wright (11). Outside of that race, it was quiet on the municipal front, as most city council races in Plattsburg, Lathrop and Gower went uncontested by opponents. That includes the offices of Lathrop Mayor Jennifer
trict for three years. He also helped form the first mutual aid agreement, which consisted of Gower, Plattsburg, Lathrop, and Trimble.
Sam said when he took on the position, their first budget consisted of $12,500, which was a result of a tencent levy for joining the association. The ISO rating by insurance companies was nine, but dropped to seven (lower ratings are better) due to Chief Thompson’s requirement of 3,000 manhours of training for the volunteers. This could be considered a blessing and a curse, since the requirement resulted in a number of the original volunteers quitting. However, Thompson said there were younger volunteers coming on board.
Current fire chief John Roe started as a volunteer in

1994 and has served as chief since 1998, except for a couple years when Tracy Rose took over so John could start a family. John has been chief for a total of 22 years. His budget is significantly higher currently with a tax
levy of 30 cents per $100 assessed value. However, only 26 cents is collected due to the Hancock Amendment. The ISO rating currently stands at four for the area and has been at that level since 2018.
Are you on Medicare but still struggling to afford your prescriptions and health care costs? Young At Heart Resources, your local area agency on aging, has information on programs that may be able to help you.
The “Extra Help” program available through the Social Security Administration helps pay out-of-pocket costs from Medicare Part D prescription drug plans, including premiums, deductibles, and co-payments. Income and asset limits apply.
Medicare Savings Programs are available to help with out-of-pocket costs from Original Medicare (Parts A and B.) They pay for premiums, copayments, or both, depending on the applicant’s income and assets.
Recent changes to income and asset guidelines for each of these programs have made more people eligible than before. With Medicare costs continuing to rise, why pay more than necessary in out-of-pocket expenses? There are several options available to help keep your furry family members calm. Natural pheromone products, such as Adaptil for dogs and Feliway for cats, are recommended for any anxiety issues. Pressure body wraps, such as ThunderShirts, have been shown to be helpful for several animals. Homeopathic options/essential oils may relieve some anxiety but be sure to use products labeled for pets. When all else fails or you need just a little more, there are pharmaceutical options available. If you are interested in trying anxiety medication for your pet, call today and schedule your appointment.

There are plenty of questions that arise during the season that we Christians call Lent. It’s one of our holiest days of the year, as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, occurring after the end of the 40-day Lenten period. This Sunday is our day to celebrate the risen Christ.
When talking about questions, and more importantly, looking and finding the answers, all you must do is consider how one of the most revered evangelists, the late Billy Graham, approached his ministry. Between 1947 and 2005, he conducted 417 crusades in 185 countries and territories on six continents. The first campaign held in September 1947 drew a crowd of 6,000.
The staple of his crusades was his preaching of the gospel, and when ending his service, he would invite people to come forward to ask Jesus “to be their savior” and pray together. During this invitation, he would have a soloist sing the altar call song, “Just As I Am.” In Moscow, in 1992, one-quarter of the 155,000 people in Graham’s audience went forward at his call.
Over the years, millions answered
this call.
A prime example of such an event is retold by Hall of Fame musician Kris Kristofferson, who, as a result of responding to an altar call, wrote the song, “Why Me Lord.” Kristofferson recalled how he and Connie Smith were attending Jimmy Snow’s church one Sunday, where he said he had a profound religious experience – something that he had never experienced before. And “Why Me Lord’ Came out of it.
He said he was not a regular attendee of church. However, on this day, the congregation was kneeling, and Rev. Snow said, “If anybody’s lost, please raise their hand.”
Kristofferson admitted during an interview with Jerry Farris, “I don’t go to church very often and the notion of me raising my hand was out of the question. I can’t imagine who is doing this, and the next thing I know my hand was going up. And I was hoping that nobody else was looking since our heads were bowed praying.”
Rev. Snow then asked anyone who was ready to accept Jesus to come down to the front of the church.
Kristofferson said: “That would never happen. And I found myself getting up and walking down there.
Jimmy said something like, ‘Are you ready to accept Jesus Christ in your life?’ Which I replied, I don’t know. I didn’t know what I was doing there. He told me to kneel down
there. I don’t remember what he said, but I found myself weeping in public. I felt this forgiveness that I didn’t even know that I needed.”
Nobody really knows when or where the power of the Holy Spirit will arrive at our doorstep and provide the answers to our questions, or the forgiveness experienced by Kristofferson.
What I do know is that I’m a truly blessed man that has experienced my “Altar Call.” My prayer for you as we approach Easter Sunday is that you will hear that “Altar Call” and respond so you, too, can find the answers and forgiveness that comes from Jesus Christ.
“Why Me Lord”
Why me Lord, what have I ever done
To deserve even one
Of the pleasures I’ve known
Tell me Lord, what did I ever do That was worth loving You
Or the kindness You’ve shown Lord help me Jesus, I’ve wasted it
So help me Jesus, I know what I am
Now that I know that I’ve needed you
So Help me Jesus, my soul’s in Your hand
Tell me Lord, if you think there’s a way I can try to repay
All I’ve taken from You Maybe Lord, I can show someone else
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
What I’ve been through myself
On my way back to You
Lord, help me Jesus, I’ve wasted it
So Help me Jesus, I know what I am
Now that I know that I’ve needed you
So help me Jesus, my soul’s in Your hand
Lord, help me Jesus, I’ve wasted it
So Help me Jesus, I know what I am
Now that I know that I’ve needed you
So help me Jesus, my soul’s in Your hand
Jesus, my soul’s in Your hand.
Trivia question: What is the first day of Spring called? A. Vernal Equinox; B. The first day of spring; C. Spring Equinox; D. Spring Break (find answer nearby).

A little boy was in church on Easter Sunday with his mother when he started feeling sick.
“Mom,” he inquired, “can we leave now?”
“No,” his mother replied, “the service isn’t over yet.”
“Well, I think I’m about to throw up,” the boy announced.
“Then go out of the front door and around to the back of the church and throw up behind a bush,” said his mother.
After about 60 seconds, the boy returned to his pew, alongside his mother.
“Did you throw up?” she asked quietly.
“Yes,” the boy answered, embarrassed.
“How could you have gone all the way to the back of the church and returned so quickly?” the mother demanded.
“I didn’t have to go out of the church. They have a box next to the front door that says, “For the Sick.” (Trivia answer – A. Vernal Equinox. There are only two times of the year when the Earth’s axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the sun, resulting in a “nearly” equal amount of daylight and darkness at all latitudes. These events are referred to as Equinoxes. The word equinox is derived from two Latin wordsaequus (equal) and nox (night).)

Food for thought: Book of John: 3:16 (King James version) “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Talk to you next week!
Steve Tinnen stevetinnen@yahoo.comReading the editorials recently got me thinking about why the population of Plattsburg has gone down. I do not think an alleyway or a lack of support for local business is the reason there is “stifled growth.” I moved to Plattsburg for a couple reasons –and I moved to Trimble for a couple more. I loved being able to walk to Hy-Klas for groceries, Blondie’s for coffee. China Restaurant has the best portions for meals
in town. Being close to St. Ann Catholic Church was a blessing, and our community is still growing. However, the rest of the city is lagging a bit. Why? Three things come to my mind – jobs, housing, and education.
On jobs. I work as an accountant, a financial auditor, for cities and school districts. I work with cities all the way from Kansas City to Sioux City, Iowa, and Duluth, Minnesota. How am I
able to do this remotely in Plattsburg? United Fiber. How was I able to complete grad school at nights in Plattsburg? United Fiber. Focusing on work-fromhome professionals who want country livin’ away from the craziness of Kansas City will be critical for Plattsburg. But I was lucky. The job market for positions with wages that can support a family are slim around here. So, a lot of folks work
in St. Joseph or Kansas City. Why would any of them with a commute pick Plattsburg over Lathrop (next to the interstate) or Gower/Trimble (right on 169)? Spoiler: they wouldn’t, and they aren’t.
Second, housing. Have you paid attention to your property taxes recently? Assessed values are through the roof, literally. That’s hitting the market for housing prices as well. Very few people my age, young adults
with families, can afford a house in Plattsburg. Clay Avenue is beautiful, but that comes at a high cost.
Third, education. Y’all have recently seen the struggles that Clinton County R-III is experiencing with test scores. It is not a good look. Open enrollment is on the horizon, with that bill being passed in the state legislature. Parents will be looking towards Cameron, Lathrop, East Buchanan,
and even Smithville if R-III continues to lag. They will pick where they live based on the perceived quality of their local school district. For them, Plattsburg is not the best choice in Clinton County, or even in the top three right now.
Tyler Walock Trimble, Mo. Publisher Emeritus Steve TinnenJohn Allen Ditto was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Herbert and Weata Ditto of Plattsburg, Missouri. At the age of three, John showed great interest in the piano and was taught by Pauline Chaney and Lucille Hoover of Plattsburg. At the age of nine until he was eighteen, he studied piano at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music with organ lessons beginning in 1961.
Upon graduating from Plattsburg High School in 1963, he went on to earn a Bachelors of Music Degree in Organ and Church Music from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1969 John earned his Masters of Music in Organ and Sacred Music from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. From 1969-1972 he was the Director of Music for the First Presbyterian Church in Evansville, Indiana. In 1972 he began his Doctoral Degree of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Upon graduation he served as assistant professor of organ, piano and music history at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri, and was organist at Linn Memorial United Methodist Church on campus from 1975 to 1982. In 1982 Dr. Ditto began teaching at the University
of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory of Music. He continued to teach at the conservatory until his retirement in 2015. In that time he was also the Organist/Music Director at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Kansas City. Throughout his career, Dr. Ditto played numerous concerts in the Kansas City metro and throughout the country. During the summer months, John spent time on Lopez Island, Washington, where he was the organist at Grace Episcopal Church. Upon retirement he volunteered at the Kansas City Free Health Clinic and St. Luke’s Hospital. John also served as Chairman of the Program Committee on the UMKC Retirees Association Board.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Weata Ditto and by his nephew, Matthew Nelson and his step-great-nephew, Brian Nelson.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Alice (Larry) Roberts and nephew, Zach (Ashley) Nelson and his great-nieces Lilly and Sylvie Nelson, all of Plattsburg, Missouri. John loved his “bonus” family and is survived by step-nephews Tim Roberts of LaGrange, Georgia, Vince (Jeannie) Roberts of Edgerton, Missouri, Jason (Valentine) of Encinitas, California, Brandon Roberts of Austin, Texas, as well as step-nieces Dena (Bob) Freund of Mission, Kansas, and Cheryl (Andy) of Macomb, Illinois. He is also survived by 15 step-great-nephews and nieces. In addition, he leaves behind hundreds of former students, colleagues, and friends who will remember him for his great talent, humor and kindness.
Services will be held at 3:30, April 16th, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church located at 11 E. 40th St., Kansas City, Missouri 64111.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for the music program, to the American Guild of Organists (New Organist Fund John Ditto Scholarship, 475 Riverside Drive, Suite 1260, New York, NY 10115), or to the John A. Ditto Memorial Music Scholarship, P.O. Box 136, Plattsburg, Missouri 64477.
Children and seniors alike enjoyed the Easter egg hunt at Oakridge in Plattsburg this past weekend, but for those who missed out, two more hunts will happen locally this weekend. Sisters in Service will hold their annual Easter egg hunt at Gower City Park on Saturday, April 8, at 1 p.m., sharp!

As the calendar flips over to April, the track season in Missouri is in full swing, and local athletes are already adding medals to their collections.
The East Buchanan Invitational was this past Monday, during which the EBHS boys team fought their way to the team title with 127 points, while the girls were sixth. For Plattsburg, the girls placed fourth on the day, while the boys placed seventh in the team standings.
Aidan Hensley led the way for East Buchanan, winning both the 1600M (4:56.99) and 3200M (10:43), while helping the 4x800M relay team (Parker, Paxton, White, Hensley
8:34) to first place. Trey Johnson was also first in the long jump (6.15 meters) and Chase Meers was first
in the shot put (13.88 meters). Trevor Klein added a first-place finish in the triple jump (12.67 meters) and was second in the long jump (6.07 meters). Trey Johnson was second in the javelin, Wyatt Parker was third in the discus and Reece Dixon was fourth in the pole vault (2.59 meters).
For the East Buchanan girls, Laney Wilmes was second in the javelin (34.4 meters), Brooklyn Johnson was second in the shot put, and Rilyn Sherwood was second in the long jump (5.11 meters). Natalya Sprague was third in the high jump and Adrian Allen was fourth in the pole vault.

It took more than seven innings for Lathrop and Plattsburg to hash out their rivalry on the diamond last week.
The two teams were knotted 6-6 and required extra innings to decide a winner Thursday, March 30, at Lathrop High School. Plattsburg took the win in the eighth, powered by a three-run single from Bra
den Brown that lifted the Ti
gers to a 9-6 victory. Brown finished the night with four RBIs.
Seniors Wyatt Moran and Jackson Lewis each scored twice for Plattsburg. Gavin Carter and Luke Schroeder each scored once and Rylan Langton added an

RBI. Four Tigers took to the mound Thursday, with Keegan Gudde striking out five batters and allowing five hits in the start. He went four and two-thirds innings.
For Lathrop, Keaton Coots scored twice and knocked in a pair of runs, while Gabe Watkins knocked in two RBIs. Griffin Schrunk, Max Gagnon, Grady Miller and Mason Mudd each scored a run. Miller and Carson Carver each threw four innings, with Miller striking out six batters and Carver fanning four batters.
A day later, the Tigers drubbed Sweet Springs for an 18-3 win in three innings, during which Plattsburg set a painful new state record by sustaining 11 hit batters.
Braden Brown took the brunt of the damage, getting hit three times. Hunter Risch had four RBIs, while Brown, Schroeder and Moran each scored three times. Moran, Lewis and Carter each knocked in a pair of runs. Carter also struck out five batters in less than three innings on the mound.
The annual Plattsburg Tournament was Saturday, and Risch made the most of it, striking out a school record 16 batters in a complete-game victory over Polo, 5-2. He allowed seven hits and just two walks and one earned run. Schroeder scored twice and Lewis knocked in a pair of runs.
Plattsburg fell in their second game of the day against Maryville, 14-0.
The Lathrop Mules tried to get back on the winning track this past Monday but fell to baseball power Savannah, 15-6. Mason Mudd came up with a home run and four RBIs for the Mules, with Cole Chapman, Max Gagnon, Miller, Mudd, Shane Dodd and Dylan Smith each scoring a run.
Meanwhile, East Buchanan has stormed out to a 6-1 record to begin the season, their lone loss coming against Class 4 Maryville.
Before running into the Spoofhounds, the Bulldogs opened on six-straight wins, including a pair of big victories against KCI foes North Platte, 2-0, and Mid-Buchanan, 6-2. Against North Platte, senior Bronco Whitt allowed just one hit and one walk in the shutout. Against Mid-Buchanan, Gage Busby struck out 10 batters while allowing just a pair of hits. Full stats for East Buchanan were unavailable as of press time.
while finishing third in the 4x800M (Nelson, Woods, Nelson, Wehmeyer). Freshman Letecia Howard set a school record in the high jump at 5’2” to break the mark previously set by Tina May in 1986. Allyson Elliot was third in the pole vault.
For the Plattsburg boys, senior Carson Stockdale won the 400M at 52.58 seconds. He was third in the 3200M and junior Isaia Howard was third in the high jump.
All three local schools took on some big competition last Friday by participating in the Smithville meet. Despite the tough opposition, East Buchanan punched into the top three five times: Brooklyn Johnson was second in the shot put, Trey Johnson was second in the javelin and the
long jump, Rilyn Sherwood was second in the long jump, and Laney Wilmes was third in the javelin.
For Lathrop, Avery Patton won the high jump, Scott Abbott was third in the boys high jump, and Lucas Quinn took fourth in the 110M hurdles. The Plattsburg girls 4x200M relay was second and Letecia Howard was third in the high jump. Carson Stockdale was second in the 400M on the boys side.
Earlier last week, Lathrop hosted its early invitational. Jared Wright won the javelin and Kinsley Patton won the shot put for Lathrop, while Letecia Howard won both the high jump and 440M for Plattsburg. Stockdale won the boys 3200M and the Lady Tigers 4x400M relay was also first.
