Celebrate composer Erik Satie’s 150th birthday and Calgary’s Year of Music with a performance of the longest piano piece in history. Vexations runs continuously for over 18 hours, played in shifts by more than 30 pianists dubbed ‘Esther’s Piano Relay Team’.

Director Ethan Hawke documents the career of Seymour Bernstein, a classical pianist who abandoned his rising performance career at age 50 to retreat to a modest, private life as educator and composer.
“Is it possible for a pianist to be too good? If anyone faces jeopardy with that question, it’s Marc-André Hamelin” (The New York Times). This is Mr Hamelin’s first Calgary performance since his sold-out Honens recital in 2010.

Ten years since winning the top prize at the 2006 Honens Piano Competition, Minsoo Sohn returns to Calgary with a convincing and moving recital of Beethoven’s last three piano sonatas.

Inspired by the art songs of Franz Schubert, composer David Lang enlisted four classically trained artists active in alternative-pop circles to perform a new song cycle called death speaks. Commissioned by and premiered at Carnegie Hall and Stanford Lively Arts in 2012, death speaks makes its Canadian premiere at this late-night cabaret that also features Schubert’s monumental Death and the Maiden string quartet.
