MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

I am thrilled to welcome you to Honens’ tenth Competition and our search for the next “Complete Artist!”

When I was a young pianist, competitions always motivated me to find more within myself. I began with small local competitions and gradually progressed to the international stage. I never thought about besting anyone around me—the variety of artistry and the levels of accomplishment are infinite. Rather, I was inspired to connect with music, through my chosen instrument, in more meaningful ways than I had before.

I have also judged international piano competitions, and it is a humbling experience, requiring a trained ear and an open mind. My first jury experience was in 1992, at the inaugural Honens International Piano Competition, and I knew after meeting Esther Honens that I was fortunate to be at the beginning of something extraordinary.

Music is our universal language. Music transcends spoken language and different cultures. Music has the power to move us, transport us, and excite us. And now we have the privilege to host extraordinary young artists whose talent, dedication, and hard work will be evident through their musical expression.

I am also grateful to our distinguished Jury, collaborating artists, past Laureates, mentor, conductor, and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. All are committed to bringing the highest level of music and artistry to you.

Let the music begin, and let’s enjoy every note.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Honens Family & Friends:

Finally!

After four long years, the moment we’ve all been waiting for…and to our ten sensational Semifinalists, this moment belongs to you.

Welcome…I wish you all the very best of luck.

When Esther Honens made the decision to establish an international piano competition here in Calgary, she could not have imagined the impact that her generosity would have on the lives and careers of emerging musicians, the international piano world, and her beloved hometown. Thirty years and ten competitions later, we proudly remain true to her vision—to discover and help launch the careers of the world’s most promising emerging pianists.

To the Honens Team, Board of Directors, and Volunteers, my deepest and most profound thanks. An event of this magnitude truly takes a village, and all contributions, big and small, are equally important when it comes to ensuring its overall success. Your commitment and dedication continue to amaze and inspire. To you who support us—individuals, as well as private and public funding agencies—we could not do this without you and are beyond grateful for your partnership.

As many of you know, I will depart my current role shortly after the Competition comes to a close and feel privileged to have had the unparalleled opportunity to be among you. Thank you Honens, thank you Calgary, for six tremendous years.

MESSAGE FROM THE 2018 HONENS PRIZE LAUREATE

The tenth edition of the Honens International Piano Competition is finally here. What a journey it’s been since the last Competition, for all of us. Arguably, between no two editions of Honens has the world changed as much as it has in the past two.

Four years ago, I had the incredible good fortune of being named Prize Laureate. My international career launched in an ideal fashion, with the comprehensive support of Honens’ unique Artist Development Program. Notwithstanding the flurry of international engagements and acclaim that followed, perhaps the greatest testament to the value of the program has been the continued flourishing of my career through one of the most surreal periods of our lifetimes, the pandemic. At a time when musical life disappeared as we knew it, Honens, through its support of exciting projects such as album recordings, new work commissions, and streamed performances, has been a lifeline to my professional development. I am enormously grateful to the wonderful Honens Team and all those who support this remarkable institution for making this possible.

My trips to Calgary over the past four years have been some of the highlights of my time as Prize Laureate—by now, it feels like home! Engaging with this vibrant community of piano lovers has been such a joy. In turn, representing Honens and Calgary across the world has been a true privilege.

I am excited to pass the mantle on to one of the ten pianists competing in Calgary. We are in for a feast of brilliant piano playing, and I’m looking forward to enjoying it together with this fantastic audience. During the Competition, I’m also thrilled to curate and present the symposium Mind Over Music, exploring a number of themes surrounding competitions in the 21st century. I hope to see you there!

ME SSAGE F ROM T HE

GOV E RNOR GE NE R A L

I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending and competing in this year ’s Honens International Piano Competition in Calgary, Alberta.

As one of Canada’s most prestigious international piano competitions, this event attracts artists and spectators from a multitude of countries around the world, who speak a multitude of languages. On this occasion, however, we are all united through the universal language of music. We are blessed to see this triennial event return after being delayed by the pandemic, and to witness once again these musicians’ passion, dedication and talent.

Congratulations to the organizers and supporters who have made this event possible, and who continue to build community through the arts.

I wish everyone in attendance a wonderful event, and to the competitors the best of luck

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon Governor General of Canada

MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA

I am pleased to convey my warmest greetings to everyone attending the 2022 Honens International Piano Competition, taking place in Calgary.

Since it was first held 30 years ago, the Honens International Piano Competition has become a highlight of Calgary’s arts scene. This prestigious event offers a diverse program featuring some of the world’s best young musicians, in concert and competition. I am certain that audiences will delight in the chance to see ten emerging artists from seven countries vie to be named the 2022 Honens Prize Laureate.

I would like to congratulate the talented musicians who are competing this year. I would also like to commend the organizers, supporters, and volunteers on a job well done. Your enthusiasm and hard work are vital to the success of this outstanding cultural showcase.

Please accept my best wishes for a most enjoyable and memorable experience.

Sincerely,

MESSAGE FROM THE ALBERTA MINISTER OF CULTURE

On behalf of Alberta’s government, I am pleased to welcome you all to the 2022 Honens International Piano Competition.

I know from experience that some of the best things to collect are mental. When you know poetry so well, what you see walking down the street can recall lines of verse into your mind. Similarly, when you know classical music so well, random sounds that you hear can trigger melody and memory. The mundane is infused with meaning and is a healthy release from our troubles. That is the power of music.

And that’s why the Honens International Piano Competition is so important. This competition brings world-class piano music into our lives. Such music stays with us and lifts us out of the everyday, allowing us to see things in a new way.

Thank you to all the amazing Honens staff and the Board of Directors, for your invaluable work organizing this event. Because of you, Esther Honens’ dream of showcasing Calgary’s community spirit and nurturing artistic talent is a reality.

Best of luck to all the competitors!

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR OF CALGARY

It is my pleasure to welcome you on behalf of City Council to the Honens International Piano Competition!

For three decades, Honens has provided us with a chance to hear and feel the world around us differently. Calgary is honoured to welcome emerging professional pianists as they compete in one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world. I commend all those involved in making this event a success and for their dedication to the performance of classical music in our community.

This year’s semifinalists have dedicated countless hours of practice to perfect their craft – an inspiration to musicians everywhere who share their dream. Music has a powerful effect on our brains, and artists, in particular, have the unique ability to soothe, empower, and unite us. I am so glad that we can gather once again to savour the collective audience experience that only live music can provide.

Congratulations and best of luck to the pianists competing to be the 2022 Honens Prize Laureate!

Sincerely,

HONENS THEN & NOW

ESTHER HONENS

Esther Honens loved the piano and the city of Calgary. After working 25 years as an office manager for Henry Birks & Sons and amassing a sizeable fortune through smart investments, she turned her attention to creating a legacy of musical excellence to be enjoyed by generations of Canadians. In 1991, knowing she was nearing the end of her life, Mrs. Honens gave $5 million to endow an international piano competition in Calgary. Her competition would provide a springboard for young musicians and be a source of tremendous civic pride. A Board of Directors was quickly assembled, and an Artistic Director appointed. Their challenge was to organize the inaugural competition while Mrs. Honens, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease, was still alive. Mrs. Honens observed the Competition’s final concerts in November 1992 from a specially-built chamber in the Jack Singer Concert Hall. Five days later, at age 89, she passed away.

COMPETITION PROCESS

THE COMPLETE ARTIST

The Complete Artist is a thoughtful interpreter, a consummate collaborator, an awe-inspiring virtuoso, a communicator, a risk-taking explorer, a dreamer. The Complete Artist expresses and interprets ideas from a wide cultural context and keen imagination through performances and programming choices that are informed and seasoned by a fascination for life outside the practice studio. The Complete Artist inspires the heart and engages the intellect.

The Honens International Piano Competition discovers unique, imaginative, and informed pianists—emerging Complete Artists whose distinctive voice, versatility, and ease as communicators demonstrate that they are ready for professional careers.

The Complete Artist’s interpretations are founded upon the intellectual and emotional understanding of musical text, and upon their ability to synthesize and express such understanding so as to challenge and stir both the intellect and the emotions of the listener. This creative awareness stems not only from knowledge of a particular composition itself but from a wide knowledge of related music, of musical literature as a whole, and of the arts in general. If the resulting interpretation appears unusual and unconventional, it does so freshly and naturally. Pianists taking part in the Honens Competition must also express—through their stage deportment, program design, and interviews with arts journalists—a sensitivity to contemporary culture and a willingness and finesse to communicate effectively with audiences regardless of age, location, background, or degree of musical sophistication.

APPLICATION PROCESS AND EVALUATION

Applications to the Competition are accepted through an online platform. Pianists of all nationalities, aged 20 to 30, with the exception of previous Honens Laureates and professionally managed pianists, are eligible to apply. Honens asks for a comprehensive resume of education, experience, and interests. Proof of schooling, and documentation from performances and competitions must be provided. The Applicant Screening Jury evaluates all eligible applications, based on experience relative to age, proposed Competition programming, and letters of reference. The Applicant Screening Jury chooses 50 pianists to advance to the Quarterfinals.

QUARTERFINALS

International Audition Round

Quarterfinalists perform a 40-minute recital in New York or Frankfurt. Recitals are video recorded under conditions that are as similar as possible. Following the recital, each Quarterfinalist participates in a ten-minute, English-language interview, which is also captured on video. The First Jury reviews all recital and interview recordings and selects 10 pianists to advance to the Semifinals.

SEMIFINALS

Solo and Collaborative Round

Performance order is determined in advance of the Semifinals. This order of performance is maintained throughout the Semifinals except, at the discretion of the Jury Facilitator, for reason of accident, illness, or other untoward circumstance.

Pianists choose their performance piano(s) from instruments supplied by Honens’ Official Piano supplier, Steinway & Sons. Each pianist is allotted 30 minutes for piano selection. They may choose a different instrument for the solo recital, collaborative performance, and for Finals I. The piano for Finals II is pre-chosen by Honens’ Artistic Director and will be the same instrument used by each Finalist.

Each Semifinalist performs in two separate rounds:

Semifinals I a 65-minute self-programmed solo recital which must include a newly commissioned 8-minute work by Canadian pianist / composer Stewart Goodyear*

Semifinals II a 60-minute solo / collaborative recital which must include one of Beethoven’s ten violin sonatas, one piece from Fritz Kreisler’s Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen, and solo repertoire to complete the program

*The Stewart Goodyear commission is made possible through the generosity of Irene and Walt DeBoni.

Pianists are asked to design their recital programs with the same care and on the same principles as for a public, professional concerts. Honens believes that a Complete Artist explores both the pivotal works of piano literature and the music of our time (i.e., works composed during the last 50 years).

Each pianist has a 75-minute rehearsal with the collaborative artist, Martin Beaver, and a run-through immediately before the collaborative recital.

The Second Jury selects three pianists to advance to the Finals. Jury deliberations take place immediately following the Semifinals X recitals and the announcement of the Finalists is made that same evening.

FINALS

Chamber, Concerto, and Interview Round

The order of chamber and concerto performance is made programmatically and is decided by Honens’ Artistic Director and the conductor of Finals II.

Each Finalist performs in two separate rounds:

Finals I a three-part performance consisting of a Mozart concerto (from a prescribed list) with string quintet, a set of Schubert lieder (from a prescribed list) with a singer, and an encore announced from the stage

Finals II any concerto composed after 1791, with full orchestra

Each Finalist also undertakes a 30-minute English-language interview with an arts journalist.

Each Finalist has a 90-minute rehearsal with the Viano String Quartet + Sam Loeck (bass), and a 45-minute rehearsal with mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó prior to their Finals I performance.

They also have a 30-minute meeting with the conductor immediately followed by a two-hour rehearsal with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra for their Finals II concerto. There is a dress rehearsal on the day of each performance.

Final Jury deliberations take place immediately following the Finals II performance and the announcement of the 2022 Honens Prize Laureate is made that same evening.

MEETING WITH JURORS AND MENTOR-IN-RESIDENCE

All members of the Second Jury remain in Calgary for one day after the Finals to share their knowledge and expertise with Competition pianists. Pianists may discuss questions relating to their own technique and musicianship with each Juror.

A highly respected pianist attends the final week of the Competition as Mentor-in-Residence. The 2022 Mentor-in-Residence is Jeremy Denk. The seven pianists who do not advance to the Finals each meet with the Mentor for a 60-minute coaching session. The Mentor also attends the Finals after which he meets with the two Finalists and the Honens Prize Laureate.

JURIES

Honens’ juries include concert pianists and other individuals (artist managers, collaborative musicians, presenters, etc.) from the musical world who play a meaningful role in a concert artist’s career. All jurors have extensive knowledge of the piano literature and represent and / or are aware of the qualities an artist must possess in order to build and sustain a career in today’s world.

JURY FACILITATOR

Honens’ Artistic Director acts as Jury Facilitator. He has the right at any time to remind juries of criteria for the choice of pianists and prizewinners to maintain the integrity of the process and of the Competition and may invite discussion at any time. He is a voting member of the Applicant Screening Jury but does not vote during any subsequent stage of the Competition.

OFFICIAL MATHEMATICIAN

Honens’ Official Mathematician monitors and regulates the voting process and scoring procedures to ensure absolute fairness. He attends jury deliberations but does not vote and is not invited to discuss musicians with juries. The Jury Facilitator may ask the Official Mathematician to lead discussions on topics of scoring or voting procedures, or when scores or rankings are indecipherable between pianists.

Guidelines and processes are in place to ensure that the Honens International Piano Competition is as fair as possible and that it continues to lead the competition world by reputation. Scan this QR code to read the complete Jury guidelines as well as the voting and tabulation procedures.

ARTIST DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The 2022 Honens Prize Laureate will be awarded a comprehensive three-year artistic and career development program valued at a half-million dollars.

Previous Artist Development Programs have offered career-defining debut recitals at Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Konzerthaus Berlin; residencies at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity; mentorship programs with the leading artists of our time including Emmanuel Ax, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Angela Hewitt, and Hélène Mercier; the production, release, and worldwide distribution of professional recordings; and repertoire and public relations coaching.

The Artist Development Program is largely supported by the generosity of Honens Laureate Circle members in Calgary, Edmonton, and Ottawa and by foundations from across Canada.

Honens is grateful for the support of these individuals who played an important role in making the 2022 Honens International Piano Competition a reality.

2022 COMPETITION AWARDS

“Support of these awards is in celebration of thirty years of meaningful music making and successful competitions in the name of Esther Honens, a woman determined and passionate in her efforts to bring some of the finest young pianists in the world to Calgary. There were forty candidates that first Competition! The stories of their journeys to a freezing cold city ‘somewhere in Canada’ are hilarious! My late husband Bill was the founding Chairman of that inaugural event. It was a mammoth task, a significant challenge to be sure, but as Calgary has proved again and again, volunteers and resources emerged from all over the city and succeeded in presenting a fabulous, winning event.”

2022 SECOND JURY

“Honens is incredibly dear to my heart and my commitment to the organization is unwavering. I joined the foundational Board of Directors in 1991 and became Chair in 2000—30 years later I have the privilege of witnessing a thriving organization ready to take on new challenges. I am proud to support the Second Jury of the 2022 Honens International Piano Competition—continuing the long tradition of bringing the world to Calgary!”

Nicolas Namoradze presents a session interspersing piano performances with discussions and guided mindfulness exercises designed to place participants into a perceptive headspace to listen to specific pieces of music. The foundational meditations explore facets of our awareness and attention, our interpreting of stories and dramatic narratives, how we perceive and conceptualize musical textures, and the communication and internalization of emotional affect, prompting a reappraisal of our relationship to music as listeners.

MIND OVER MUSIC

Mind Over Music is a four-session mini-symposium exploring a range of questions surrounding music competitions in the 21st century, primarily from the perspectives of cognitive science. Events include two panel discussions, a workshop, and a lecture demonstration that touch on such topics as performance psychology, mindfulness, mental health, aesthetics, and neuroscience.

Curated and hosted by 2018 Honens Prize Laureate Nicolas Namoradze, Mind Over Music is made possible through the generosity of the Azrieli Foundation and with the cooperation of the Azrieli Accelerator and Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Calgary.

Nicolas Namoradze
Honens is grateful for Irene & Walt DeBoni’s commitment to keeping new music alive.

“We believe in supporting composers—particularly Canadian composers. We feel that it is important to have music that reflects our time, as well as the classics that we all love. We thoroughly enjoyed sponsoring the retrospective of Alexina Louie's work at the 2019 Honens Festival so when we were asked to sponsor Stewart Goodyear's commission for this year's Competition, it was a natural fit.”

—Irene & Walt DeBoni

“Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso is a virtuosic piano composition written in the spirit of Mendelssohn and Saint-Saëns, but inspired by music of Sub-Saharan Africa. The piece opens with a 46-bar serenade of harmony and colour, creating an atmosphere improvisatory and mysterious until it stops on an A-flat chord. The A-flat then repeats and takes on a drumming effect before the Rondo takes off, the rhythm of 3/8 and 6/16 dominating the dance. The middle theme, established in bold octaves in the right hand, and repeated near the end of the work, takes the spirit of a chant.”

Ross Glen Hall

Roderick Mah Centre for Continuous Learning, Mount Royal University

Julie Nesrallah host

Honens Honours pays tribute to individuals and organizations whose dedication to the arts, like that of Esther Honens, has made an extraordinary contribution to our city, province, and country. Larry has served as a director of many arts organizations over the years, including Honens, the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre.

Both Jan and Larry are committed to bringing together artists for one-of-a-kind collaborations, often in their home, with the end goals being the creation of amazing musical experiences and the support of emerging and established artists alike.

The Fichtners have been a part of the Honens Family since 1992 when they hosted Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, who competed in the inaugural Honens International Piano Competition. Their close friendship with Jean-Efflam and his family continues to this day.

Honour these champions of the arts community at this fundraising dinner and celebration. Proceeds support the 2022 Honens International Piano Competition and its outreach into the community.
