“A perennial complaint about music competitions is that brawn often triumphs over brain,” read The New York Times review of Minsoo Sohn’s Honens-label recording of the Goldberg Variations last December.

“But the Honens International Piano Competition in Calgary, Alberta, has found a genuine artist.” What better affirmation to usher in a year-long run-up to the Seventh Honens International Piano Competition and a celebration of Esther Honens’ vision 20 years since the first Competition in 1992?

For this 20th birthday year, Honens returns to EPCOR CENTRE’s Jack Singer Concert Hall for the entire Calgary Rounds of the Competition and awards the largest prize of any international music competition of its kind. The Honens Prize Laureate receives the $100,000 Enbridge cash prize and an artistic and career development program valued at a half million dollars. We’ve made enhancements to offer mentorship

opportunities to our visiting pianists, to engage jurors who will play a role in the development of the Honens Prize Laureate’s career and, by adding an interview requirement, we intensify our search for a 21st century artist for 21st century audiences. The line-up of guest artists features a feast of musical innovators and legends and our streamlined schedule makes it easier than ever to hear every note.

It is fitting that a piano competition of this calibre should be held in Canada. Two of the most influential and innovative virtuosos of the 20th century—Glenn Gould and Oscar Peterson—hail from Toronto and Montreal, respectively, and many of the leading pianists of our time— Canadians such as Angela Hewitt, Anton Kuerti, Marc André Hamelin and André Laplante—have gained international acclaim for their artistic and technical achievements.

Honens differs from other competitions of its kind by focusing on the ‘Complete Artist’. Its varied program challenges the musician to demonstrate both technical mastery and expressive talent. She was also a music lover and amateur pianist who gave very generously of her fortune to create the Honens Competition.

Esther Honens lived to see her dream come true; she passed away just days after watching the first Competition in 1992. However, her name, her vision and her generosity live on in the ardent hopes of young musicians and in the sheer joy of music lovers.

Esther honens Esther Honens loved the piano and the city of Calgary. After working 25 years as an office manager for the Henry Birks jewelry firm, she amassed a sizeable fortune through smart investments and turned her attention to creating a legacy of musical excellence to be enjoyed by Canadians for generations.

In 1991, knowing she was near the end of her life, Mrs Honens gave $5 million to endow an international piano competition in Calgary. Her competition would provide a springboard for young musicians and be a source of tremendous civic pride. A board of directors was quickly assembled and an Artistic Director appointed. Their challenge was to organize the inaugural competition while Mrs Honens, suffering from Parkinson’s disease, was still alive. They barely made it. Mrs Honens had to observe the final concerts in November 1992 from a specially built chamber at the side of Jack Singer Concert Hall’s stage. Five days later, at age 89, she passed away.

Today, 20 years since that first competition, Esther Honens’ generosity, vision and love of music continues to touch the lives of Calgarians, Canadians and musicians and music-lovers around the world.

Esther Honens’ endowment is maintained and administered by The Calgary Foundation.

Concept & Design: WAX Sculpture: Walter May Photography: Justen Lacoursiere

Note from Walter May During the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, the Nickle Arts Museum presented an exhibition entitled Striving for Ideal Resolution. The premise of the exhibition was that even though the dream of an exceptional or ‘ideal’ accomplishment with its accompanying rewards may be a motivating factor for many athletes, artists or performers, there is another, more critical component to consider when acknowledging exceptional achievement. This is the struggle and commitment that enables an individual to persist in activities often requiring daily contributions to a challenging practice that may offer as many setbacks as rewards. It is understood of course, that the ‘ideal’ is unattainable no matter how much we desire to accomplish or even witness that moment. Nonetheless, we persist in the quest to come closer to perfection.

I was reminded of this exhibition when learning that the Honens International Piano Competition, in its search for the ‘Complete Artist’, offers recognition of a pianist’s accomplishments beyond the performance. This factor influenced the construction of a sculpture in four parts that focuses on much of the paraphernalia surrounding the piano. It is my hope that objects linked to the artist and the piano might provoke memories or perceptions that refer to the artist’s broader experience.

The Benches In the context of the performance, it is the piano bench that situates the artist. In this sculptural context, not only is the bench a support, but it is also a pedestal, a mirror, a container and a frame. It is a repetitive element to be arranged, aligned and stacked. Each of the four benches can be considered as a singular sculpture or, with its companions, can become an essential part of the larger sculptural group.

All of the benches are related to other objects that carry their own associations, references and questions. For instance, the chaotic tangle of blue cable tumbling from one of the benches might suggest creative potential or is it perhaps more evocative of movement and energy? Does the encapsulated metronome represent a pause, stillness, silence, a perpetually quiet moment? Is it simply a reflection of the metronome on the piano bench or could it be an echo? The children’s shoes hanging below the bench – a nostalgic memory of a time when one was too small to reach the pedals or perhaps a less pleasant recollection of being restrained by what seemed like endless hours of practice? What is the significance of the disconnected speaker horns? Why is the model piano only partially supported by the bench with one leg extending over the edge? Should we consider the model to be a toy or a trophy; a ghost or an ideal?

Walter May Although primarily known as a sculptor, Walter May’s practice has also included drawing, digital photography, installations and, on occasion, performance art. He has an extensive exhibition record with 15 solo exhibitions, an additional ten collaborative exhibitions and over 75 invitational and group exhibitions at the regional and national level. International activities include the production and exhibition of works in England, France, Iceland, Poland and the United States. May’s work is represented in public and corporate collections including Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The Canada Council Art Bank, Glenbow Museum, the University of Lethbridge, the University of Regina, The Art Gallery of Alberta, The Nickle Arts Museum, TorontoDominion Bank Collection and several others.

Since 1982, Walter May has been a continuing permanent faculty member at the Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD), teaching primarily in the sculpture program. Recent research projects and creative activities include contributions to ACAD’s Institute for the Creative Process / Hugh Dubberly produced concept maps on the subject of ‘Play’ and ‘The Creative Process’.

Walter May is a graduate of the University of Alberta and the University of Regina.

A collection of Walter May’s work is exhibited at Paul Kuhn Gallery from 13 October to 10 November.

The Complete Artist To establish a career in music today, a pianist must have a unique and distinctive voice, be a versatile musician and an effective communicator— the ‘Complete Artist’.

The Complete Artist is the whole package—a sensitive musician, a consummate collaborator, an awe-inspiring virtuoso, a communicator, a dreamer, an explorer. He or she expresses and interprets ideas from a wide cultural context and keen imagination. His or her performances and programming choices are informed and flavoured by a fascination for life outside the practice studio. The Complete Artist is a risk-taker, unafraid of challenges and hungry to face the unknown. Moreover, he or she inspires the heart and engages the intellect. The Complete Artist leaves us wanting more.

The Complete Artist’s interpretations will be founded upon the intellectual and emotional understanding of musical text and upon his or her ability to synthesize and express such understanding so as to challenge and stir both the intellect and the emotions of the listener. This creative awareness will stem not only from knowledge of a particular composition itself but, equally importantly, from a wide knowledge of related music, of musical literature as a whole, and of the other arts including, but not limited to, the visual and literary. If the resulting interpretation appears unusual and unconventional it will appear so freshly and naturally. Artists taking part in Honens must also express— through their stage deportment, program design and interviews with arts journalists—sensitivity to contemporary culture and willingness and ability to communicate effectively with audiences of today.

Application Process and Evaluation Applications to the Competition are accepted through an online process.

Pianists of all nationalities, aged 20 to 30 on 17 October 2012, with the exception of previous Honens Laureates and professionally managed pianists, are eligible.

Honens asks for a comprehensive resume of education, experience and interests. Proof of schooling, past performances and competitions must be provided. The Applicant Screening Panel evaluates all eligible applications, and chooses a maximum of 50 artists to advance to the Quarterfinals. Candidates are evaluated based on proposed Competition programming, experience relative to age and reference letters.

Quarterfinals International Audition Round Quarterfinalists perform a recital of approximately 40 minutes’ duration before an audience in Berlin, London, Los Angeles or New York. Each pianist must perform music for solo piano from the repertory submitted in his or her application.

Quarterfinal performances are recorded on digital video under as similar conditions as possible. An arts journalist conducts a ten-minute interview with each pianist in English. These interviews are videotaped.

Semifinals Recital Round Performance order is determined in advance of the Semifinals. This order of performance is maintained throughout the Semifinals except, at the discretion of the Jury Facilitator, for reason of accident, illness or other untoward circumstance. The pianist who is assigned ‘Number 1’ will perform his or her solo recital first; the pianist who is assigned ‘Number 6’ is the first to perform his or her collaborative recital.

Pianists have the opportunity to select their performance piano(s) from instruments supplied by Honens’ ‘Exclusive Piano’ manufacturers. Each pianist is allotted 30 minutes for the choice(s). He or she may choose one instrument for the solo recital, another for the collaborative performance, and another for appearance with orchestra should he or she so wish. All piano choices are final. No changes are allowed.

Pianists perform a 60-minute solo recital and a 70-minute collaborative recital with a singer, violinist and cellist. Each pianist has a 30-minute rehearsal with the singer, a 40-minute rehearsal with the violinist and a second 40-minute rehearsal with the cellist. There is run-through with each collaborator immediately before the collaborative recital.

The Laureate Selection Panel / Second Jury selects five pianists to advance to the Finals. A Jury deliberation takes place immediately following the last Semifinal performance and the announcement of the Finalists is made from the stage that same evening.

Finals Concerto Round The order of performance in the Finals / Concerto Round is made programmatically and is decided by the Competition’s administration and the guest conductor of the orchestra. There is a rest day for pianists between the Semifinals and the start of rehearsals for the Finals.

Finalists have a 30-minute rehearsal with the conductor immediately followed by a two-hour rehearsal with the orchestra. There is a dress rehearsal on the day of performance.

A 15-minute interview will be conducted with each Finalist in English.

Sample discussion points are provided to the pianists in advance of the interviews in order to prepare their thoughts. The interview is videotaped for review by the Second Jury. The Jury evaluates this interview on the pianist’s ability and willingness to communicate and his or her readiness and suitability for a major career in music.

A Jury deliberation takes place immediately following the last Finals performance. The announcement of the Honens Prize Laureate and presentation of prizes is made from the stage that same evening.

Meeting with Jurors and Mentor-in-Residence All members of the Second Jury remain in Calgary for one day after the Finals to share their knowledge and expertise with Competition pianists as they see fit. Pianists have the opportunity to discuss with individual jurors questions relating to their own technique and musicianship.

A highly respected pianist will attend the final week of the Competition. The five pianists who do not advance to the Finals will meet with the mentor for a 60-minute coaching session. The mentor also attends the Finals after which he meets with the four Finalists and Honens Prize Laureate.

Repertory Applicants submit two solo recital programs for the Competition. The first 40-minute program is performed in the Quarterfinals. The second 60-minute program is performed in the Semifinals. While no set repertory is required, pianists are asked to include a pivotal work from the piano literature. Juries are instructed to look for intelligent and imaginative programming. No repertory may be repeated.

Pianists are asked to design their recital programs with the same care and on the same principles as for a public, professional concert, and are encouraged to perform an encore of two to three minutes after their 60-minute solo recitals.

Pianists may select one collaborative recital program from a list of three prescribed choices.

Any concerto written after 1760 that can be performed by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra without the addition of more than a few extra players may be chosen for the Finals. Jurors consider the choice and performance of a demanding concerto from the classical era equally with the choice and performance of a work composed later.

Jury guidelines

The following rules help ensure that the Honens Competition is as fair as possible and that it leads the Competition world by reputation.

Jury Facilitator The President & Artistic Director of Honens acts as Jury Facilitator. He has the right at any time to remind Juries of criteria for the choice of pianists and prizewinners in order to maintain the integrity of the process and of the Competition. He may invite discussion at any time. He is a voting member of the Applicant Screening Panel, but may not vote during any subsequent stage of the Competition. Should any of the rules guiding Juries be broken, the Jury Facilitator may, at his discretion, relieve a Jury member of his or her duties and/or disqualify a pianist or pianists taking part.

Official Mathematicians The Honens Juries employ the ‘Optimal Jury Scoring System’ created by the Competition’s Official Mathematicians, Ernest Enns, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Calgary, and mathematician Moses Renert. One or both of them monitor and regulate the voting process and scoring procedures to ensure absolute fairness. They do not vote and are not invited to discuss musicians with Juries. The Jury Facilitator may ask the Official Mathematicians to lead discussions on topics of scoring or voting procedures, or when scores or rankings are indecipherable between pianists.

Jury Room and Meetings All official Jury meetings are closed except to Jury members, the Official Mathematicians, interpreters if needed, the Jury Facilitator and the Competition’s Director of Artistic Planning & Career Development. Jurors may not invite guests to join Jury meetings or, in the case of the Laureate Selection Panel / Second Jury, into the designated Jury meeting room under any circumstance. The collaborating artists from the Semifinals / Recital Round and Finals / Concerto Round also attend their respective deliberation meetings. The official language of Jury meetings is English.

Jury Etiquette Jury members must remain silent and undemonstrative during Competition performances. The Applicant Screening Panel sees all materials that are submitted by applicants. The Artist Selection Panel / First Jury and Second Jury see only each pianist’s biography, age, nationality and performance program as printed in the official Jury binder and the official Competition program book. It is the responsibility of each juror to make and keep comprehensive notes about all Competition performances in his or her binder. The notes should be designed to help both at the time of voting and, in the case of the Second Jury, at the meetings with pianists on the day following the presentation of awards.

Jury Confidentiality Jury proceedings are confidential. Jurors may not discuss any aspect of proceedings or of pianists’ performances with each other or with other persons except during the official meetings. Others present at Jury proceedings are prohibited from discussing any aspect of proceedings with anyone at any time. It is the responsibility of the Jury Facilitator to announce the decisions of the Second Jury after the Semifinals and Finals.

Individual and/or composite votes may not be publicly disclosed. Nothing written in the binders by Jury members may be publicly disclosed before, during or after the Competition. The binders and their contents remain the property of Honens and will be destroyed immediately after the Competition.

Conflict of Interest Should any member of the Applicant Screening Panel or First or Second Juries have or have had previously a professional or personal relationship with a pianist whose application or recorded or live performance he or she is judging, he or she must notify the Jury Facilitator prior to his or her respective stage of adjudication. It will be the responsibility of the Jury Facilitator to rule whether the member should or should not vote on that pianist’s performance, taking into account the closeness and time of such relationship. In a case where the relationship is or has been within the previous five years one of regular or occasional teacher and student, the Jury Facilitator must rule that the member may not vote on that pianist’s performance. The Jury Facilitator will inform the remaining jurors of any declaration of conflict, whether or not it is ruled as such.

Communication between Jurors and Pianists There will be no communication of any kind between jurors and Competition pianists until the announcement of the Honens Prize Laureate.

Should a pianist attempt to communicate with a member of any Jury, either during or prior to the announcement of the Honens Prize Laureate, said juror must inform the Jury Facilitator. The pianist in question may be subject to disqualification at the discretion of the Jury Facilitator.

Laureate Selection Panel / Second Jury The Laureate Selection Panel / Second Jury evaluates the Semifinals and Finals performances and Finals interview with an arts journalist in order to identify the Honens Prize Laureate and other prizewinners. The Second Jury also provides valuable feedback to all pianists taking part in the Semifinals. Jurors score each performance and interview separately.

Scores are weighted and converted to rankings. Scores are not carried forward from the Quarterfinals to the Semifinals. Scores in the Semifinals and Finals are combined for a cumulative ranking.

The voting and tabulating procedures follow: 1. Immediately after all Semifinal performances, the Second Jury convenes in the official Jury room, where it is joined by the collaborating cellist, singer and violinist. The collaborating musicians are invited to share impressions of their collaborative experiences with each pianist, from first impressions and rehearsals through performances. Jurors may ask questions of the collaborative musicians but must keep their own impressions to themselves. Discussion with the collaborating musicians is limited to 30 minutes.

2. The collaborating musicians leave the Jury room and jurors receive two ballots, one for the solo recital and one for the collaborative recital.

Jurors score each pianist’s performances on the respective ballots using the natural numbers 1 to 20, 1 being a low score, 20 representing one of extremely high accomplishment. Each juror decides his or her own scale of grading without reference to other Second Jury members; however, scores must be kept within the set numerical parameters. Decimal scores are not allowed, so there will inevitably be ties in each individual score.

The same method of scoring is used for both ballots. Each juror gives his or her completed, unsigned ballots to the Official Mathematicians.

3. If the Jury Facilitator has ruled that any individual juror is ineligible to vote for a particular Semifinalist because of a prior relationship, the Official Mathematicians will calculate a score for that Semifinalist. They will do this by evaluating the ranking of that Semifinalist as if the juror in question had not scored any of the Semifinalists. The Official Mathematicians will then assign a score to the juror’s ballot that will maintain the same ranking.

This maintains the integrity of the scoring and ranking process both for the Semifinalist concerned and for all other Semifinalists.

4. The Official Mathematicians analyze scores in the designated tabulation room. They convert the scores from the ballots for the solo recital and the collaborative recital into rankings. The method of conversion from scores to ranks is as follows: the highest score of each juror receives rank 1, the second highest score rank 2, and so on. When ties arise, as they inevitably will, the scores are given equal rank in such a way as to preserve the ranking of those with ranks above and below. For example, if the fifth, sixth and seventh highest scores of a juror are tied, each will receive rank 6, i.e. the average of ranks 5, 6 and 7. The eighth highest score of that juror will then receive rank 8. Similarly, if the first and second highest scores are tied, each receives rank 1.5. The next highest score receives rank 3.

5. The Official Mathematicians next create two slates, one for the solo recital and one for the collaborative recital. These two components of the Competition are given equal weight and are thus combined into a single slate. They take this combined slate and from it construct two lists. The top three names on this list are the ‘first slate’; these pianists are named Finalists. The next four names on the list are the ‘residual slate’. Both slates are given to the Second Jury in alphabetical order.

6. The Jury Facilitator asks each juror whether there is a pianist not on either slate who he or she feels strongly ought nevertheless to be considered as a Finalist. The Jury Facilitator also asks the Official Mathematicians if the various rankings provide any special insights. Each juror has the right to add one name to the residual slate. The number of names on the residual slate could reach a maximum of seven. Two pianists are ultimately chosen from the residual slate to be Finalists, making a total of five.

7. The Jury Facilitator invites each juror who has added a name to state briefly why the added pianist ought in his or her view to be considered. He may also invite general discussion of other pianists if he thinks it appropriate.

8. Each juror receives a ballot containing the names of the pianists on the residual slate. He or she then scores the pianists on the slate using the natural numbers 1 as the lowest to 10 for the highest possible score.

9. Each juror gives his or her unsigned ballot paper to the Official Mathematicians who combine the results and produce a list in order of ranking.

10. The Jury Facilitator invites discussion of the list. If a majority of jurors decide that the ranking ought to be different, a reordering is possible. The Official Mathematicians will outline the possibilities that can change the final outcome. Voting is by a show of hands. Should there be no majority on the alternate possibilities, the ranking reached by the original vote stands.

11. The names of the top two ranked pianists chosen by this process are added to the three already chosen to make the required total of five Finalists.

12. At a time after the Semifinals, to be arranged by the Competition administration, the jurors convene to view the 15-minute videotaped interviews conducted with the five Finalists and an arts journalist.

13. After viewing all interviews, each juror receives a ballot listing the names of the Finalists. He or she scores the interview using the natural numbers 1 as the lowest to 5 for the highest possible score, with ties allowable. Each juror gives his or her completed, unsigned ballot to the Official Mathematicians.

14. At this time, each juror also receives a ballot listing the names of all pianists who have not advanced to the Finals. The ballot paper is titled ‘Raeburn Prize for Artist of Special Promise’. Each juror puts a mark beside the name of the pianist who is not a Finalist who he or she considers to have shown the most promise for career after further performance experience. Each juror gives his or her completed, unsigned ballot paper to the Official Mathematicians. The pianist with the most votes wins the prize and will be revealed to the Second Jury during the final deliberation preceding the presentation of awards. In the case of a tie, the Jury Facilitator calls for a vote by show of hands at the final Jury deliberation in order to establish a sole winner.

15. After the completion of the Finals the jurors convene in the official Jury room and are joined by the conductor of the Finals performances.

The conductor is invited to share his or her impressions of each pianist, from first impressions and rehearsals through performances. Jurors may ask questions of the conductor but must keep their own impressions to themselves. Discussion with the conductor is limited to 15 minutes. The conductor leaves the Jury room before scoring begins.

16. Each juror receives a ballot listing the names of the Finalists. He or she scores the performance of the concerto, taking into account the comments of the conductor, using the natural numbers 1 as the lowest to 5 for the highest possible score, with ties allowable. Each juror gives his or her completed, unsigned ballot paper to the Official Mathematicians.

17. The Official Mathematicians go to their designated tabulation room while the Second Jury is free to discuss the performances that have just taken place. As before, the Official Mathematicians convert the scores from the Finals ballot papers into rankings. They then combine the rankings from the solo recital and collaborative recital from the Semifinals and the concerto and interview from the Finals, weighting them 30%, 30%, 30% and 10% respectively, to produce a list of the five Finalists in ranked order, with whatever ties that may have appeared.

18. Before the presentation of results, the Jury Facilitator reminds the Second Jury of criteria for the choice of pianists and prizewinners in order to maintain the integrity of the process and of the Competition.

He asks the Official Mathematicians to provide any special insights and then invites discussion of the result by asking each juror whether there is a pianist he or she feels strongly ought to be considered Honens Prize Laureate instead of the pianist or pianists who have ranked first. Each juror has the right to suggest one name and may discuss the rationale for his or her nomination for up to five minutes. Only one pianist will be named Honens Prize Laureate. Should there be more than one candidate identified/nominated as Honens Prize Laureate, the final decision will be made by majority vote with a showing of hands. Should there be an impasse (i.e. no majority vote for an option different from the original ranking), the ranking reached by the original vote stands, unless the original ranking resulted in a tie. In such a case, a second voting by hand is undertaken to identify the majority’s choice of Laureate.

LaUreate awarD Honens has commissioned Alberta glass artist Darren Petersen to create a commemorative glass award for the 2012 Honens Prize Laureate. The award is based on a design by Mark Gibeau, who created the Laureate Award presented to Honens Laureates from 1996 to 2009.

Darren Petersen has been creating blown glass for over 20 years. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Alberta College of Art + Design and is a regular Series Instructor at Red Deer College. He has exhibited work across North America, in Germany and in South Korea. His work is represented in the collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and in private collections worldwide. Petersen is a passionate naturalist, wildlife photographer, fly-fisher and bow-hunter. These outdoor activities inform his studio practice as creative inspiration.

The program includes worldwide general management by Honens for three years; recital debuts in career-building markets that may include Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Munich, New York, Paris and Toronto; residencies at The Banff Centre in preparation for collaborative touring projects, development of repertory and live recordings; a recording on the Hyperion label; and mentorship opportunities with Emanuel Ax, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Leon Fleisher, Angela Hewitt, Stephen Hough and Sir Neville Marriner.

The Hunstein Variations: A Photographic Record of Glenn Gould 1957 to 1980 4 to 27 october 2012 masters gallery

A Photographic Record of Glenn Gould 1957 to 1980 In 1957, Don Hunstein, a New York portrait photographer working for Columbia Records, was assigned to capture the creative moments and personality of Glenn Gould during his recording sessions in the famous CBS 30th Street Studio. Over the succeeding 23 years, Hunstein continued to capture Glenn Gould’s recording sessions in New York, Toronto and elsewhere. He was also commissioned photographs intended specifically for album cover use.

Hunstein selected these particular photographs as his personal favourites from a collection of thousands of negatives and prints which, taken together, are the largest group of images of Glenn Gould by one photographer.

The exhibit was produced in 1992 by The Glenn Gould Foundation, which administers the prestigious Glenn Gould Prize, and has travelled to various cities and locations for presentation to the public.

From the late 1950s until his death in 1982, Glenn Gould was among the world’s most prominent classical musicians. A celebrity in his own country before he turned 20, Gould rapidly established a reputation in the international musical community. More than 25 years after Gould’s death at age 50, interest in his legacy continues on with extraordinary fervour. This year, a series of celebrations are scheduled around the world in honour of the 80th Anniversary of Gould’s birth.

This year, Honens honours F. Richard Matthews cm qc with this free concert for the entire community. Over the last 60 years, Mr Matthews has been an avid supporter of the arts and arts education in Alberta. A retired lawyer, he has made considerable contributions to numerous arts organizations including Honens, the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, which he helped found in the 1950s. He has also generously supported the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University Conservatory of Music and numerous health care and social service organizations. Mr Matthews was appointed Member of the Order of Canada in 2010 for his outstanding contribution to arts and culture.

tHe HorowItZ PIaNo NortH aMerIcaN toUr The legendary Steinway & Sons Model D Horowitz Piano makes a stop in Calgary during its North American tour from October 14 to 28. The nine-foot grand is one of Steinway’s most revered designs. The tour provides a rare opportunity for the public to see, hear, touch and even play CD 503—the fabled instrument that accompanied Vladimir Horowitz (1903-1989) on tour.

It was known to be one of Horowitz’s favourite instruments.

Horowitz, a Steinway Artist Immortal, is widely considered one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. His colourful personality and astounding performances enthralled audiences for decades. Early in 1934, as a wedding present, Steinway & Sons presented Horowitz and his wife Wanda with a Steinway Model D, Serial #279503. In the early 1940s, this piano was replaced with #314503, now known simply as CD 503. This is the piano Horowitz kept in his New York townhouse. He used it in many recitals and recordings in the 1970s and 1980s, and famously demanded that the piano be his exclusive touring instrument during the last four years of his life, including for his triumphant return to Moscow and Leningrad in 1986.

Lorenzo Cossi Italy Age 30 Italian Lorenzo Cossi admires great pianists Radu Lupu and Claudio Arrau but as a child was inspired to play piano by his older brother. Cossi completed his piano studies in Trieste, Italy with Giuliana Gulli and Nino Gardi, and is now on faculty at Ars Nova Academy. He has also taken part in masterclasses with Joaquín Achúcarro, Jerome Lowenthal, William Grant Naboré and Elissio Virsaladze. In 2009 he founded Duo Sinossi with cellist Marianna Sinagro; he performs regularly as part of this duo and with other chamber ensembles. His solo performances have been broadcast in Italy by RAI, Radio Popolare and Radio Classica, and in Slovenia by National Radio. Cossi follows a Schumann motto: “If your music comes from your innermost soul, if you have felt it, then it will take effect on others.”

David Fung Australia Age 29 Australian pianist David Fung is described as “stylish and articulate” by the The New York Times. He is a champion of contemporary music as evidenced by his performances with the internationally-acclaimed eighth blackbird ensemble, and last year was appointed Artistic Director of the Bari International Music Festival in Italy. He has performed with orchestras across Australia including the Canberra and Melbourne Symphonies, the Queensland Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra, in the United States with the San Diego Symphony and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestras, and with Israel’s Philharmonic and Camerata Orchestras. Fung is co-founder of Project Classical, a Boston-based non-profit organization whose activities support arts education in schools and arts initiatives in the United States. He studied with Claude Frank and Peter Frankl at Yale, where he is completing his Master of Musical Arts degree, and previously studied with John Perry at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles.

He enjoys the great outdoors where he can be found hiking, rock-climbing, skydiving, kayaking and sand-boarding.

Sasha Grynyuk Ukraine Age 29 The BBC Music and International Piano magazines chose Ukrainian pianist Sasha Grynyuk as a Rising Star in 2009. He studied with Ronan O’Hora at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has also benefited from the artistic guidance of Alfred Brendel and Murray Perahia. While at Guildhall, he won the Wigmore Recital Prize and the school’s most prestigious award, the Gold Medal. Grynyuk has performed throughout the United Kingdom, notably at Royal Festival, Queen Elizabeth, Bridgewater, Cadogan, and Barbican Halls. His win at the 2009 Rio de Janeiro International Piano Competition led to performances throughout South America. He has also performed extensively through Europe and the United States. Grynyuk’s debut CD on the PianoClassics label, featuring works by Gould and Gulda, was released earlier this year. His diverse musical tastes include everything from Bob Dylan to Miles Davis and Arvo Pärt to Jay-Z.

Pavel Kolesnikov Russia Age 23 Russian pianist Pavel Kolesnikov equates music with fine perfumes, believing both arts simultaneously speak to the heart and subconscious.

He began music studies with violin and piano at age six, and played both instruments before concentrating solely on piano after ten years.

Kolesnikov studies at Moscow State Conservatory with Sergey Dorensky and at London’s Royal College of Music with Norma Fisher. In 2008, he made his recital debut in the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory and has since played both as soloist and chamber musician throughout Russia and in Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

He took part in the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival in Italy in 2005 and 2006 and the Verbier Festival and Academy in Switzerland in 2007 and 2009. Kolesnikov is also passionate about literature; he considers Tolstoy the literary incarnation of Beethoven.

Maria Mazo Russia Age 30 Russian pianist Maria Mazo is the Artistic Director of an innovative concert series in Hanover called ‘Late Night Lobby’, which puts classical music in a casual lounge environment to attract new and diverse audiences.

She holds a graduate degree in piano performance from the Hanover Hochschule für Musik und Theater where she studied with Arie Vardi and Matti Raekallio. She also earned a Master of Arts from the same institute’s department of Journalism and Communication Research where her thesis explored the relationship between artist and audience.

Mazo’s studies were supported by the Solti, Yehudi Menhuin and Alfred Toepfer Foundations. She performs regularly in Germany and throughout Europe as soloist and in chamber ensemble. Beethoven is her desert island composer.

Jong-Hai Park South Korea Age 22 At age 11, Korean pianist Jong-Hai Park entered his country’s Yewon Music School. He went on to study at the Seoul Arts High School and in the preparatory section of the Korea National University of Arts with Choong Mo Kang. He is Laureate of several Korean competitions, Second Prizewinner at the Hong Kong International Piano and Nagoya International Music Competitions in 2008, and at the 2009 Dublin International Piano Competition. He was a Finalist at Belgium’s prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2010. Last year, the city of Eppan awarded him its Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli Prize. Park has given a series of recitals in Korea (Young Artist Concert Series) and Japan, and has performed with the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra. He enjoys Korean BBQ, relaxing with a video game and playing soccer.

Konstantin Shamray Russia Age 27 Russian Konstantin Shamray was the first pianist in the history of the Sydney International Piano Competition to win not only its top prize, but also six special awards along with two recording contracts in 2008.

This allowed him to tour Australia and New Zealand in recital and as a collaborator with the Australian String Quartet. He has also performed extensively through Europe, including appearances at the Klavier-Festival Ruhr and Bochum Festival in Germany and with the Moscow Philharmonic and Prague Symphony Orchestras. His recording of Tchaikovsky’s Morceaux Op. 72 was released by Naxos and a recital recording is available on ABC Classics. Shamray studied at Gnessin Special Music School and Academy of Music in Moscow with Tatiana Zelikman and Vladimir Tropp. He spends as much time as possible in nature, going for long walks with his dog and riding his bike.

Avan Yu Canada Age 25 Canadian pianist Avan Yu was born in Hong Kong and raised in Vancouver. He grew up surrounded by the sounds of traditional Chinese instruments—his mother playing pipa and his father the sheng. He now lives in Berlin where he studies with Klaus Hellwig at the Universität der Künste. Yu has performed with some of Canada’s leading orchestras, including the Vancouver Symphony and National Arts Centre Orchestras and Victoria Symphony and Symphony Nova Scotia. He has appeared overseas with the Dresden Philharmonic, Slovak Radio Symphony, Xiamen Philharmonic and Morocco Philharmonic Orchestras. In 2008 he was Silver Medalist and winner of the People’s Choice Award at the prestigious Paloma O’Shea Santander International Piano Competition and earlier this year won First Prize at the Sydney International Piano Competition. His list of favourite musicians includes Wilhelm Kempff and Murray Perahia and fellow Canadians Oscar Peterson and Nikki Yanofsky.

Zenan Yu CHINA Age 25 Chinese pianist Zenan Yu performed extensively throughout China after making his recital debut at age 15 in a performance of Rachmaninov’s complete preludes. While in China, he studied with E-lin Chen at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and had the honour of performing for former president Jiang Zemin at The Great Hall of the People in 2007. Later that year, he travelled to the United States to study with Russell Sherman at New England Conservatory. Yu continues his studies at NEC toward a Master’s degree and has performed in New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Cleveland and Boston. He loves the thrill of scary movies.

erIc ZUber UNIteD StateS Age 27 American pianist Eric Zuber holds degrees from The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School where he studied with Boris Slutsky, Leon Fleisher, Claude Frank and Robert McDonald. While at Juilliard, he was awarded the Arthur Rubinstein Prize and received the Gina Bachauer Prize twice. Zuber has won prizes at several international piano competitions including the Cleveland, Dublin and Sydney. He made his orchestral debut at age 12 with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and has performed in recital at Washington’s Kennedy Center, the Sydney Opera House and Cleveland’s Severance Hall. The New York Times described his playing as “irresistibly fluid” at his Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall debut in 2007. Zuber is a tennis fan and a table tennis enthusiast. He also studies Korean.

William Aide A pianist, author and teacher, William Aide earned musical degrees from the University of Toronto and The Juilliard School. As a collaborative pianist, he has worked with conductors Sir Andrew Davis, Arthur Fiedler and Walter Susskind; sopranos Elizabeth Soederstroem and Lois Marshall; and the St Lawrence and Orford String Quartets, among others. He has performed concerts throughout Canada, the former Soviet Union, and in New York, Chicago and San Francisco. A specialist in Canadian music, Aide has performed more than 30 premieres of Canadian works, including five piano concertos. He is the former Head of the Keyboard Division at the University of Toronto and was the inaugural R.E. Edwards Chair in Piano Performance. His autobiography, Starting from Porcupine, was published in 1996. Aide has also written two books of poems, one of which, Sea Voyage with Pigs, is based on the Chopin piano preludes.

He has a long affiliation with the Honens Competition, having served as a juror for each edition of the Competition since 2000.

Cecilia String Quartet Min-Jeong Koh violin Sarah Nematallah violin Caitlin Boyle viola Rachel Desoer cello The Cecilia String Quartet is one of Canada’s most exciting young ensembles. First Prizewinner of the 2010 Banff International String Quartet Competition and Second Prizewinner of the 2008 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, the Quartet is Ensemble-in-Residence at the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto for the 2012-2013 season. The Quartet has performed at Berlin’s Konzerthaus, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, London’s Wigmore Hall, Bonn’s Beethoven-Haus and venues in Italy and Belgium. The ensemble was formed while students at the University of Toronto and soon won acclaim for “extraordinary commitment and maturity” (Montréal Gazette). It has performed for some of the most respected chamber series including MusicToronto, San Diego’s La Jolla Music Society, ProQuartet in Paris and the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. The Quartet has a four-CD contract with Analekta; the first recording of music by Dvorˇák was released in March.

The Quartet takes its name from St Cecilia, the patron saint of music.

Katherine Chi Calgary native Katherine Chi became the first woman and the first Canadian to win the Honens International Piano Competition in 2000.

A gifted young performer whom The Boston Globe predicted was “on a line headed straight up,”Chi went from the Curtis Institute to the New England Conservatory where she completed her studies with Wha Kyung Byun and Russell Sherman. Chi’s Weill Recital Hall debut at Carnegie Hall drew the following words from The New York Times: “Ms. Chi displayed a keen musical intelligence and a powerful arsenal of technique.” She has performed in recital and with orchestra across North America and Europe. LeoN FLeISHer Pianist Leon Fleisher is a musical legend—both for his remarkable musicianship and the inspiring story of perseverance that has sustained his career. Fleisher made his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1944 and in 1952 became the first American to win the prestigious Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Competition, establishing himself as one of the world’s premier classical pianists. At the height of his success at age 36, he was suddenly struck silent with a neurological affliction later identified as focal dystonia, rendering two fingers on his right hand immobile. Rather than end his career, he focused on repertory for the left hand only, conducting and teaching. Not until some 40 years later was he able to return to playing with both hands after experimental treatments. Fleisher has performed with every major orchestra throughout the world including the Berlin Philharmonic, Cleveland and London Philharmonic Orchestras. He has made numerous recordings including the 2004 release of his critically acclaimed album Two Hands. The New York Times, Washington Post, L.A. Times, Billboard, Gramophone and many others hailed it as one of the top recordings of its year in any genre. He received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors in 2007 and is the subject of the 2006 Oscar® and Emmy®-nominated documentary film, also titled Two Hands. His recent memoir, My Nine Lives: A Memoir of Many Careers in Music, co-written with Washington Post music critic Anne Midgette, is published by Doubleday. Eric Friesen Eric Friesen is a veteran broadcaster, writer and speaker on music and culture. He spent much of his life as a network music host and producer for CBC Radio and Minnesota Public Radio (MPR), as well as a network executive for both organizations. For CBC he hosted programs such as Studio Sparks, In Performance, and Onstage at Glenn Gould Studio, as well as the celebrated documentary series, The Concerto According to Pinchas, The Concerto According to Manny and Peter and the Symphony.

Since leaving the CBC in 2008, Friesen has been busy serving a wide variety of major cultural organizations in Canada. He is a regular contributor to NUVO magazine and Queen’s Quarterly, and is a much sought after public speaker on cultural issues. Friesen serves as director and advisor to a number of cultural and arts organizations, including Roy Thomson Hall and Massey Hall, Kingston WritersFest and Honens.

Charles Garrett Charles Garrett is Principal Bassist of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

He was recipient of a full scholarship to the University of Michigan, where he studied with Lawrence Hurst, and graduated with honours. He also trained at Interlochen Centre for the Arts and Boston Symphony’s Tanglewood Institute. Garrett is a soloist with the Alberta Chamber Players and has appeared with the Kensington Sinfonia, Beau Quartet and University of Calgary String Quartet. He is Instructor of Double Bass at the University of Calgary, coaches for the Calgary Youth Orchestra and Banff International Festival of Youth Orchestras, and has been a faculty member for the Asian Youth Orchestra in Hong Kong. He was recently a guest lecturer at Indiana University School of Music.

roberto MINcZUk Roberto Minczuk is Music Director of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and holds two concurrent posts in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Artistic Director of the Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira and Music Director and Artistic Director of the Opera and Orchestra of the Teatro Municipal Rio de Janeiro. Until 2005, he served as Principal Guest Conductor of the S達o Paulo State Symphony Orchestra in Brazil, having completed a nine-year tenure as Co-Artistic Director of that orchestra and a two-year period as Associate Conductor of the New York Philharmonic. Minczuk began his career as a French horn prodigy and by age 13 was Principal Horn of the S達o Paulo Symphony. After graduating from The Juilliard School in 1987, he became a member of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra at the invitation of Kurt Masur. Returning to Brazil in 1989, he pursued conducting studies with Eleazar de Carvalho and John Neschling.

Since his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1998, Minczuk has been invited to conduct extensively in North America, with successful appearances at nearly all of the major North American orchestras and in many European capitals. He has been Music Director of the Calgary Philharmonic since 2006.

Bruno Monsaingeon Over the last 30 years, Paris-based concert violinist Bruno Monsaingeon has devoted a large part of his time to the making of musical films. With over 80 ‘opuses’ in his film canon, Monsaingeon is a storyteller about many of the major musicians of our time: Nadia Boulanger, Yehudi Menuhin, Murray Perahia, Glenn Gould, Sviatoslav Richter, Viktoria Postnikova, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Michael Tilson Thomas, Zoltán Kocsis, Friedrich Gulda, Paul Tortelier, Julius Katchen, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, David Oïstrakh, Julia Varady, among many others. His long association with Menuhin and Gould led to the production of numerous films with these two musicians. Two of them in particular,The Open Wall, Menuhin in China and The Goldberg Variations, have gained worldwide acclaim.

In 2006, he completed Glenn Gould, hereafter, a retrospective of the life and work of Gould, seen from today’s point of view and based on a synthesis of all the documents existing on the pianist. Monsaingeon made his debut as a conductor in 2004 with the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra in Russia. He is also the author of seven books including a series of three containing the entire literary output of Glenn Gould.

Johannes Moser Cellist Johannes Moser came to international attention when he won Moscow’s Tchaikovsky International Music Competition in 2002. In short order, his career has reached great heights. Moser has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Chicago, London and Tokyo Symphonies, the Israel, New York, Los Angeles and Munich Philharmonics, and the Bayerische Rundfunk, Cleveland, Concertgebouw and Tonhalle Zurich Orchestras. He now works with leading conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Lorin Maazel, Valery Gergiev, Zubin Mehta, Christian Thielemann, Pierre Boulez and Paavo Jarvi. A dedicated chamber musician, Moser has regularly collaborated with Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Jonathan Biss, James Ehnes, Leonidas Kavakos, Midori and Menahem Pressler. He is especially committed to reaching young and new audiences, from kindergarten to college and beyond. His touring outreach project with toy pianist Phyllis Chen took ‘Sounding Off: A Fresh Look at Classical Music’ to campuses and alternative venues across the United States, culminating in performances at Le Poisson Rouge, New York’s leading venue for eclectic gigs. Moser was born into a musical family in 1979 as a dual citizen of Germany and Canada. His mother is soprano and past Honens Competition juror, Edith Wiens.

Geoff Nuttall Geoff Nuttall co-founded the St Lawrence String Quartet in 1989 and has since performed as first violinist of the renowned chamber ensemble more than 2,000 times on stages around the world. Nuttall is also an accomplished soloist. His collaboration in Gyorgy Kurtag’s Kafka Fragments for soprano and violin with Dawn Upshaw, and staged by Peter Sellars, began at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall in New York in 2005 and was since revived for acclaimed performances in Los Angeles, Berkeley, London, Brussels, Rome and again in New York. In addition to his busy concert and recording schedule, Nuttall is on faculty at Stanford University where the St Lawrence String Quartet has been Ensemble-in-Residence since 1999. He has also served as Artistic Director for Chamber Music at the Spoleto Festival USA since 2010. Nuttall began violin at age eight after moving to London, Ontario from College Station, Texas. He spent most of his musical studies under the tutelage of Lorand Fenyves at The Banff Centre, the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He has performed as a collaborative artist at the Honens Competition twice before: the first time, in 1996, with the St Lawrence String Quartet, and again in 2000 for performances of piano trios with cellist Shauna Rolston.

Amanda Roocroft Amanda Roocroft is known internationally as one of Britain’s most exciting singers. She has appeared with leading orchestras throughout Europe and North America with conductors including Sir Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, Mariss Jansons, Ivor Bolton, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Daniele Gatti, Sir Neville Marriner, Sir Andrew Davis, Sir Charles Mackerras, Valery Gergiev and Bernard Haitink. She has also performed at many of the world’s leading opera houses and festivals including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Glyndebourne Festival, the English National Opera, the Welsh National Opera, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, the Netherlands Opera and the Salzburg Festival. Roocroft won the 2007 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in ° Opera for her performance in the title role of Janácek’s ˇ Jenufa with the English National Opera. A noted recitalist, she has appeared at London’s Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Musikverein in Vienna, New York’s Lincoln Center, La Monnaie in Brussels and in Munich, Frankfurt, Paris, Valencia and Lisbon.

St Lawrence String Quartet Geoff Nuttall violin Scott St John violin Lesley Robertson viola Christopher Costanza cello The St Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ) is one of the world’s great chamber ensembles. Since winning both the Banff International String Quartet Competition and Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1992, the Quartet has delighted audiences across the world with its spontaneous, passionate and dynamic performances. Alex Ross of The New Yorker wrote, “the St Lawrence are remarkable not simply for the quality of their music making, exalted as it is, but for the joy they take in the act of connection.” The Quartet continues to build its reputation for imaginative and spontaneous music-making, through an energetic commitment to the great established quartet literature as well as the championing of new works by such composers as John Adams, Osvaldo Golijov, Eziquiel Vinao and Jonathan Berger. The St Lawrence performs over 120 concerts annually worldwide and calls Stanford University home, where the group is Ensemble-in-Residence.

William Aide Canada A pianist, author and teacher, William Aide earned musical degrees from the University of Toronto and The Juilliard School. As a collaborative pianist, he has worked with conductors Sir Andrew Davis, Arthur Fiedler and Walter Susskind; sopranos Elizabeth Soederstroem and Lois Marshall; and the St Lawrence and Orford String Quartets, among others. He has performed concerts throughout Canada, the former Soviet Union, and in New York, Chicago and San Francisco. A specialist in Canadian music, Aide has performed more than 30 premieres of Canadian works, including five piano concertos. He is the former Head of the Keyboard Division at the University of Toronto and was the inaugural R.E. Edwards Chair in Piano Performance. His autobiography, Starting from Porcupine, was published in 1996. Aide has also written two books of poems, one of which, Sea Voyage with Pigs, is based on the Chopin piano preludes. He has a long affiliation with the Honens Competition, having served as a juror for each edition of the Competition since 2000.

Leila Getz Canada Leila Getz, Founder and Artistic Director of the Vancouver Recital Society, has presented the Canadian and Vancouver debut performances of some of the world’s most brilliant and respected young musicians. She has provided the platform for the brightest lights in the musical world long before they have become household names and has become a trusted ‘taste-maker’ by providing the opportunity to hear the ‘future’ of classical music—of discovering musicians for the 21st century. In 1995, she was made a Member of the Order of Canada for her community service in cultivating Canada’s musical landscape and, in 2004, was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal and appointed to the Order of British Columbia, the province’s highest honour for outstanding achievement. A year later, she was awarded an honourary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Simon Fraser University. Getz was also one of only three international consultants invited to sit on the Artistic Advisory Committee of the world-leading Melbourne Recital Centre (Australia), which opened in 2009.

Charles Hamlen United States Charles Hamlen is one of the most respected professionals in the world of arts management. He began his professional life as a high school French teacher upon graduating from Harvard in 1965. After 11 years in the classroom, with an interim year in Paris at the Sorbonne, he moved to New York to start a career as an artist manager. Together with business partner Edna Landau, he founded Hamlen/Landau Management in 1979. Five years later, the company was acquired by the International Management Group, becoming IMG Artists, where he looked after the careers of artists including violinists Joshua Bell, Leila Josefowicz and Itzhak Perlman; the Emerson String Quartet; and pianists Stephen Hough, Evgeny Kissin, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and André Watts. In 1992, Hamlen left IMG for almost two decades to found Classical Action: Performing Arts Against AIDS, a not-for-profit organization that draws upon the talents, resources and generosity of the performing arts community to raise and distribute funds for AIDS-related services across the United States. Today, Classical Action is the nation’s leading industry-based AIDS fundraising and grantmaking organization. He returned to IMG Artists as Chairman for three years starting in 2009 while continuing his affiliation with Classical Action as its Founding Director. He has recently taken a position with New York’s Orchestra of St Luke’s.

Benedetto Lupo Italy Benedetto Lupo is a refined pianist whose career has gained worldwide recognition. He has performed with some of the world’s top orchestras, notably the Chicago, Montreal, Seattle and Vancouver Symphonies, the Hallé, Bergen (Norway), London, New York and Rotterdam Philharmonics, the Gewandhaus (Leipzig), Philadelphia, Santa Cecilia (Rome) and Spanish National (Madrid) Orchestras, and with Canada’s Les Violons du Roy. Festival appearances include the Tivoli in Copenhagen, the Villa Medici in Rome, the Chopin Festival in Poland, the Schubert Festivals in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo and Chicago’s Grant Park Festival. His recording of Nino Rota’s Concerto Soirée with the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana on the Harmonia Mundi label received the prestigious Diapason d’Or award. He has also recorded Schumann’s complete works for piano and orchestra with Peter Maag and the RSI Symphony Orchestra, including the first CD recording of the piano version of Konzertstück Op. 86, for the Arts label. Lupo was Bronze medalist at the 1989 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and was Second and Third Prizewinner at the Cleveland and Gina Bachauer International Piano Competitions respectively. He teaches at the Nino Rota Conservatory in Italy.

Adrian Brendel United Kingdom / Germany Cellist Adrian Brendel studied at Winchester College, Cambridge University and with Frans Helmerson at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne. His close musical relationship with his father, Alfred Brendel led to many chamber music appearances throughout the world and culminated in a critically acclaimed Philips recording of Beethoven’s complete music for cello and piano. Adrian Brendel’s piano trio with Till Fellner and Lisa Batiashvili is much in demand throughout Europe. Other recent collaborators include pianist Imogen Cooper, the Jerusalem String Quartet and fellow Honens juror, Aleksandar Madžar. In 1995, Brendel founded Music at Plush, where he has been festival Music Director throughout its development. He is also Classical Music Director of music label Plushmusic. He regularly offers masterclasses to chamber musicians and even solo pianists because of his vast knowledge of the chamber and solo piano literature. Brendel divides his time between Plush, London and Berlin.

Michael Haefliger Germany / Switzerland The son of tenor Ernst Haefliger, Michael Haefliger earned a degree in violin at The Juilliard School, where he studied with Ivan Galamian and Dorothy Delay. He went on to study management at the School of Business, Law, and Social Sciences of St Gallen University, where he received an Executive MBA, and at Harvard in the General Manager Program. At first, Haefliger pursued a career as a concert violinist. In 1986 he became a cofounder of the Young Artists in Concert Festival in Davos (Switzerland), for which he served as Executive Director until 1998. He was also Artistic Director of the Collegium Novum in Zurich. In 1999, he became Executive Director of the Lucerne Festival where he has expanded the annual programs of the organization’s three festivals: Easter, Summer and Piano, including the cofounding of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra with Claudio Abbado and the Lucerne Festival Academy with Pierre Boulez. In 2000, the World Economic Forum in Davos named Haefliger a ‘Global Leader of Tomorrow’. He has also received the European Cultural and Innovation Prize (2003) and the Tourism Award from the Lucerne Tourism Forum (2007).

Julian Kuerti Canada Canadian conductor Julian Kuerti has quickly made a name for himself with his confident style, artistic integrity and passion for musical collaboration. Kuerti has led numerous orchestras across North America including the Boston, Cincinnati, Houston, Montreal, Toronto, Colorado and Utah symphonies, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra. In 2010, he completed his post as Assistant Conductor to James Levine at the Boston Symphony. Kuerti was born in Toronto into one of Canada’s most distinguished musical families; his father is famed pianist Anton Kuerti. He began his instrumental training on the violin, studying with some of Canada’s finest teachers. While completing an honours degree in engineering and physics at the University of Toronto, he kept up the violin, performing as Concertmaster and soloist with various Canadian orchestras. After taking a year off and touring Brazil with Kahana, a Toronto-based world-music band, Kuerti began his conducting studies in 2000 at the University of Toronto.

That summer he was accepted to the renowned Pierre Monteux School for Conductors in Maine, where he studied for two years with Michael Jinbo and Claude Monteux.

Aleksandar Madžar Serbia / Belgium Pianist Aleksandar Madžar has performed throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and Asia and has worked with some of the world’s leading conductors, including Paavo Berglund, Iván Fischer, Paavo Järvi, Carlos Kalmar, John Nelson, Libor Pešek, André Previn and the late Marcello Viotti.

He is a regular guest artist at festivals including the Bad Kissingen and Schleswig-Holstein, the Ivo Pogorelich Festival at Bad Wörishofen, Klavier Festival Ruhr, Davos, Roque d’Anthéron, Salzburg, Sintra and Aldeburgh. His recordings include the Chopin piano concertos with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony and Dmitri Kitaenko (BMG / Classic FM), a disc of Chabrier’s music for two pianos (Arion) and a disc of Elliott Carter, Rachmaninov and Schnittke (Intim Musik) with cellist Louise Hopkins. He is professor at the Royal Flemish Conservatoire, Brussels, and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Bern. Madžar was Third Prizewinner at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1996. He previously served on the 2009 Honens Competition Jury.

HaeSun Paik South Korea Pianist HaeSun Paik has performed throughout the world following triumphs at major international piano competitions including a Gold medal at the 1989 William Kapell International Competition (United States), a Silver at the 1991 Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium, and a Bronze at the 1994 Tchaikovsky Piano Competition (Russia). Paik has appeared with the world’s leading orchestras including the Boston, London, National (Washington D.C.) and NHK (Japan) Symphonies, and the Japan, Moscow, Munich, Radio France, Tokyo and Warsaw Philharmonics. She has given recitals at New York’s Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Bank of Boston Celebrity Series at Jordan Hall, and in concert halls in major cities of Europe, North and South America and Asia.

She is a graduate of the New England Conservatory where she studied with Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun and was the youngest pianist to be appointed music professor at Seoul National University in Korea (1994).

After teaching at the university for ten years, she decided to give up her professorship in order to broaden her musical experiences and views in life. She now divides her time between the United States and South Korea where she is the Artistic Director of the Busan Music Festival.

Jon Kimura Parker Canada / United States Pianist Jon Kimura ‘Jackie’ Parker was born, raised and educated in Vancouver. He studied with Edward Parker, Keiko Parker, Robin Wood, Marek Jablonski and Lee Kum-Sing, as well as with Adele Marcus, under whom he received his doctorate at The Juilliard School in 1988. Parker has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra and with the major orchestras of Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Canada.

He has given recitals in London, New York, Chicago, Munich, Budapest, Sydney, Hong Kong and Tokyo, and has performed with musicians including Joshua Bell, James Ehnes, Lynn Harrell and the Tokyo String Quartet. He has also jammed with Doc Severinsen and Bobby McFerrin and collaborated with Audra McDonald and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Parker is Professor of Piano at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and serves as Artistic Advisor for the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival. He has recorded for Telarc with André Previn, Yoel Levi and Peter Schickele. Gold Medal winner at the 1984 Leeds International Piano Competition, Parker was also awarded the Order of Canada in 1999. He previously served on the Jury of the inaugural Honens Competition in 1992.

Michael Spring United Kingdom Michael Spring is a Scottish recording executive who developed a love of classical music in his early teens, first as a listener and only later as an enthusiastic, but rather—in his words—untalented pianist. After initial university studies in philosophy and biochemistry he realized he could make his hobby his career and continued with postgraduate work in music, receiving a Masters in Music from the University of East Anglia where he researched performance practice in early piano recordings and trained as a classical recording engineer and producer. Spring has now worked in the record industry for 25 years, 23 of them spent at Hyperion Records. In addition to running the commercial side of Hyperion’s business, he has been responsible for most of the recent piano output. He has brought such pianists as Stephen Hough, Marc-André Hamelin and Steven Osborne to the label and has created the hugely successful Romantic Piano Concerto series that has released more than 50 volumes. Projects for which he has been responsible have won seven Gramophone awards, two of which have also become ‘Record of the Year’. In 2005 he took over the APR label, which specializes in re-issuing historic piano recordings.

Honens Learning Programs inspire young and old and enrich the 2012 Honens experience.

Honens High The Honens High Program offers a unique opportunity to Calgary high school students to experience performances by some of the world’s leading pianists – most of them not much older than the students themselves. Classes are invited to attend afternoon weekday Semifinals sessions at no cost.

Honens in the Classroom: Discover Music Project Elementary school children across Calgary will trace favourite pop songs back to their origins with Honens’ new ‘Discover Music Project’. Katherine Chi, 2000 Honens Prize Laureate, will guide students on their journey from Bieber back to Bach. Schools will begin the process as online penpals with Ms Chi prior to the Competition. While visiting schools, she will lead a classroom session and perform for the entire school body.

Masterclasses Music students from across Alberta learn from distinguished members of the Honens Jury, HaeSun Paik and Aleksandar Madžar. Masterclasses offer helpful instruction on topics ranging from technical and performance skills to musical style and artistic interpretation. Masterclasses are free and open to the public at 9:30 am on 20 and 21 October on-stage at EPCOR CENTRE’s Jack Singer Concert Hall.

On The Road

The Canada Council for the Arts, in partnership with Honens, presents ‘ON THE ROAD’—a workshop for professional musicians, managers and agents working in classical and contemporary classical music. Over three intensive days of discussion, presentations and hands-on exercises, participants learn from the many music professionals attending the Honens Competition, including artist managers and agents, orchestra managers, festival producers, recital presenters, journalists, publicists and record executives and producers.

The ON THE ROAD workshop is coordinated by the Audience and Market Development Office of the Canada Council for the Arts in partnership with Honens and with support from The Banff Centre and the National Music Centre.
