LETTERFROM EXECUTIVEDIRECTOR NATALIETUNG

DearHomeWorksCommunity,

As we conclude our seventh year at HomeWorks, we are celebrating “the process . Just as our scholars, whocompletedtheirfreshmenandsophomoreyears, areinthemidstoftheirhighschool journeys,HomeWorksisalsointhethickofitsprocessandgrowth.

Wehavecomealongwaysinceour4-weeksummerpilotin2017 Sincethen, wehaveevolvedintoa four-year high school program that provides each scholar with approximately 360 transportation trips to and from school, 360 healthy meals, 220 hours of tutoring, 400 hours of programming on academics and identity-driven leadership, field trips, and 30 counseling sessions per year. This summer, forthefirsttimeever, wehaveextendedourprogramtoincludeasummeracademicboot camp!

As we look forward to the coming year, we remain committed to our mission of equipping young women from marginalized communities with the tools and confidence to reach their full potential and become community leaders. We have ambitious plans to expand our programs and reach morescholars, whichyouwillreadaboutinthefollowingpages

The greatest celebrations, however, are found in the journeys of our individualscholars.Herearethreestoriestoshare:

Thalia, a sophomore and second-year scholar at HomeWorks, has grown into a confident student with a passion for art, music, and K-dramas. Despite her initial struggles with math, she faced her fears with HomeWorks’ support, mastering challenging concepts and developing a curiosity for the subject This led her to enroll in Honor Pre-Calculus, showcasing both her determination and the empoweringenvironmentatHomeWorks

Illiana, also a sophomore and second-year scholar, has shown remarkable leadership. As a selfdescribed introvert, Iliana has worked hard to build confidence, improve her public speaking, and advocateforherselfandothers.Lastyear,HomeWorkshadtheopportunitytospeakatTrentonCity Hall. Illiana was one of two scholars who bravely spoke about her experiences, helping secure a $100kgrantforourorganization!

ACADEMICS

This year, our scholars have demonstrated exceptional academic progress, achieving an impressive average attendance rate of 96% and an average GPA of 3.53. This success is the result of our targeted and individualized approach to tutoring sessions, focused study groups, and a supportive learning environment A key element of this support has been our continued partnership with Bespoke Education,withCameron,ourHeadTutor,co-leadingstudyhallalongsideourHouse Team. This collaboration, along with our dedicated team of volunteer tutors, provides invaluable one-on-one academic support while maintaining a strong senseofcommunityinourlargestudyhallspace

Ourpartnershipswithlocalacademicinstitutions, suchasPrincetonUniversity, have enriched our scholars' educational experiences. Princeton Professor Dr. Anna Stilz invited our scholars to participate in a discussion-based Political Theory seminar, where they engaged with thought-provoking readings on Dr Martin Luther King Jr Complementing these experiences, our internal College Readiness program, led by House Director Michelle, further prepared our scholars for their future by exposing them to various post-secondary pathways. These comprehensive efforts ensure thatourscholarsarewell-equippedforacademicandpersonalgrowth.

“I did get a lot of help academically, and without that help, I would not be the scholarIamtoday.”-Jada-KayM.‘27

IDENTITY-DRIVENLEADERSHIP

Beyond academics, scholars have blossomed into confident and capable leaders. Through various programs offering exposure to new skill sets and enrichment of budding interests, scholars have developed essential skills in publicspeaking,collaborationandcommunity-building,criticalthinking,visual arts, cultural appreciation, and so much more One of our highlights this past year was the Scholar Capstone project and presentation. Scholars identified areas of inequity that called their attention within their broader community, which included teacher and student relationships in public schools, fast fashion, women leaders and unaffordable healthcare Our scholars then collaborated in small groups to brainstorm strategies to raise awareness or offer interventions to the systemic issue Scholars grew and exercised their skillsinpublicspeakingbypresentingtheircommunityprojectsanddiscussing their visions for positive change in front of multiple different audiences throughout the HomeWorks community. The intrigue, passion, commitment, and mature thinking they displayed were incredible moments to witness this year!

“[HomeWorks] has taught me how to be intentional in everything that I do andhowtoadvocateformyself.”-SamiyahJ.‘26

MENTALHEALTHANDWELLNESS

Cognizant of the profound importance of mental healthcare and emotionalwell-being,HomeWorkshascontinuedtoexpandourwellness programsandmentalhealthservices.Thisyear, weintroducedindividual counseling sessions and wellness activities. Through our mental health program, scholars practiced introspection and reflection, built bonds of trust, and took charge over their own healing journeys by developing healthycopingmechanisms Overthepastyear, ourdedicatedcounselor and staff provided individualized support, ensuring each student felt heard, valued, andempoweredtoovercomechallenges.
