Smiths Falls - Janelle Labelle editorial@pd gmedia.ca When he talks about the 2019 Docs on Ice, Dr. Bob Van Noppen's eyes light up and he seems to almost hum with eager energy. This year, March 28-30 marks the first time the annual hockey tournament / fundraiser has ever been hosted in Lanark, and along with his team of dedicated local doctors, the self-styled “Sons of Lanarky,” Van Noppen has been going all out. The Sons of Lanarky - doctors from Lanark County who hosted this year’s event - are more sedately known the rest of the year as Dr. Bob Van Noppen, Dr. Bill Blaine, Dr. Paul Turner, Dr. Dan Kruszelnicki, Dr. Mike Horsey, Dr. Paul Miller, Dr. Peter Cunniffe, Dr. Spencer Gutcher, Dr. Steve Rad-

ke, Dr. Benjamin Blain, Dr. Adam Neilson, Dr. Anil Kuchinad, Dr. Troy Neufeld, Dr. Alain Gauthier, Dr. Robin Kennie, Dr. Graeme Hendry, and Dr. Cory Scott. Docs on Ice is an annual charitable fundraiser, held in a different locale each year. Among the local charities receiving funds from this 2019 event is PEP Seniors' Enrichment Program a program of individualized care, direction, and therapy, which was developed to help seniors in Perth and Smiths Falls stay healthy and stay at home longer. The Lanark County Therapeutic Riding Program (LCTRP) is also one of this year’s charities. LCTRP provides specialized horseback riding lessons to children and adults with physical and or developmental disabilities, offering a unique form of therapy, rehabilitation, and recreation.

Project Trauma Support, Perth FireDawgs, and The Table are also included in this year’s list of Docs on Ice supported charities. While the final tally is not yet complete, Van Noppen estimates the Docs on Ice fundraising total to exceed $100 000. Games were held in Lanark, Westport, Beckwith, Perth, Smiths Falls, and Carleton Place. The tournament itself welcomed over 800 participants, 60 teams in 12 divisions, and this year saw the inclusion of a first-ever all-women’s division. “We know we've got a special location,” Van Noppen explains, “we're hosting in Lanark County, holding the tournament on nine different rinks. We can welcome the participants with a small town warmth and coziness, that personal touch, that they'd never get in a big city. That's going to make it great. But we've never hosted this here before, and we probably never will again. So our standard can't just be great. Our standard,” he declares, eyes dancing, “is epic.” “When we planned our events, we needed to make sure they met that standard. So we're having a nice catered meal, and sure, you've been to a fancy dinner before,” he says, “but have you ever

been served an entire canoe filled with oysters? Now that's epic!” And just so, the Sons of Lanarky hosted an absolutely epic weekend. Thursday’s opening game was a Legends of Hockey party, with hockey legends like Wendel Clark, Geraldine Heaney, Matt Barnaby, Chris Neil, Guy Carbonneau, and more. The small town charm was in full display with more than thirty six hundred cookies pulled hot and fresh from local ovens. When each team came off the ice, they were greeted with a plate of handmade cookies to help them recharge for the next game, and to thank them for pouring their efforts into fundraising for local charities. “Cookies were the surprise hit,” says Dr. Paul Miller, “We had hot tubs at rinks, massage and physiotherapy, we gave each team a Bluetooth speaker and curated playlists to amp them up pregame. Even with all that, the most comments we heard were about the cookies. They loved them, loved the community engagement it implied.” And finally, an epic party on Friday night was served by a slew of local shops and producers. Drinks were supplied by Perth

Brewery, Weatherhead Brew Co., Top Shelf Distillers, and Scheuermann Vineyard & Winery. Catering was provided by Leatherworks, and specialty foods were served by The Stone Cellar, The Perth Cheese Shop, Perth Pie Co., and Law and Orders. The visiting doctors were treated to performances by Tom Watson, The Ramblers, King of Swingers, The Jimmy Tri-Tone Band, Marc Doucette, and The Peter Wood Trio. There was a wide range of fun activities - a poutine bar, sumo wrestling, a casino room, and more. “One of my special projects was the 70s style pinball arcade set up at YAK. It was a real nostalgia trip for many of my vintage colleagues,” shares Dr. Miller. Looking back at this intense and enormous weekend, Van Noppen says his highlight was working with his colleagues, the Sons of Lanarky. “Such a great bunch of guys. It was so great to see how proud and pleased they were of it.” The Sons of Lanarky wanted to host an epic, truly fantastic event for the fundraising Docs. Did they succeed? Yes, says Van Noppen, “The Docs loved it; they went ahead and really enjoyed it, which was our goal. That is the ultimate compliment.”
