Most companies would love to be Conveyor Tech. For the last year, the Sanford-based enterprise that designs and builds automated machines used in manufacturing worldwide has enjoyed skyrocketing growth.

Thanks to orders pouring in from existing customers — and new ones, as well — their share of the market is growing. They’ve added 78,000 square feet of space. And their workforce has exploded.

Dreama Pilson, the company’s human resources director, says Conveyor Tech essentially is doubling their head count and has been hiring around the clock since last fall. They grew from 82 employees in October to 127 by the end of April. And sometime in the next year and a half, if all goes according to plan, they expect that number to hover somewhere around 200.

But even good news can present some dicey challenges. To start with, how can you quickly hire so many people and train them all to assemble high-tech automated machines, especially when there’s already a lot of turnover in those entry-level positions?

Problem Solved

Nobody was more puzzled than Pilson — until she mentioned the problem to Central Carolina Community College’s industry services director Cathy Swindell.

That’s when the two longtime friends and industrial leaders had an idea: What about forming a comprehensive training part-

nership between Conveyor Tech and the college?

It started with that immediate problem — training new hires. Swindell found a gifted master training instructor who spent a couple of weeks inside Conveyor Tech, learning their system, assessing exactly what new machine builders needed to succeed on the job and then designing a training program to provide the critical knowledge and skills.

CCCC opened the doors to its HowardJames Innovation Center, the state-ofthe-art industrial training facility located a stone’s throw from Conveyor Tech in the Lee County Industrial Park. Conveyor Tech provided all of the needed supplies, some basic tooling and, of course, a steady stream of new employees.

How It Works

Pilson now hires in groups of six to eight and sends them to a two-week, 80-hour training class before they ever land on the production floor. That class, using the curriculum developed specifically for entry-level machine builders at Conveyor Tech, provides classroom instruction on basic electrical systems and a lot of hands-on assembly practice.

It even includes a final assessment: completely assembling an automated machine. To finish training successfully, employees must complete the assembly alone, in a fixed amount of time, with 90 see CCCC, page 11

Tribute To James Earnest

“Titt” Johnson James Earnest Johnson, known as “Titt” was born August 27, 1944 in Lee County to the late David “Sam” and Nannie Johnson.

He attended W.B. Wicker School in Sanford, NC and was a star baseball and basketball player. James was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church in Sanford before moving to Selma, N. C. “Titt” loved to sing and was always imitating songs of the 60s. His favorite quote was “This is

my show and ya’ll are just in it.”

After graduation from high school, “Titt” enterd the U.S. Army in 1966 and was initially stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia in the Combat Infantry unit.

While in the military, he received the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, one Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He was a disabled veteran and received an Honorable Discharge upon separating

from military service.

He was a caring father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He formerly worked at Burlington Mills and KR Edwards Tobacco Company.

He also worked spoiling his grandchildren. He was united in holy matrimony for 32 years to Lucille Sanders Johnson, who preceded him in death. see TITT, page 5

CCCC Offers Collision Repair and Refinishing Technology Central Carolina Community College now offers the Collision Repair and Refinishing Technology program.

The program prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, reconstruct, and finish automobile bodies, fenders, and external features.

The program includes instruction in structural analysis, damage repair, nonstructural analysis, mechanical and electrical components, plastics and adhesives, painting and refinishing techniques, damage analysis, and estimating.

“We are very excited to start the Collision Repair and Refinishing Technology diploma

program,” said Drew M. Goodson, CCCC Dean of Career and Technical Education.

“Collision repair is an in-demand field with great opportunities for students who demonstrate an interest in and aptitude for the knowledge and technical skills that we will teach in the program.”

The Collision Repair and Refinishing Technology diploma program is offered during the day in a new facility located at the West Harnett Center. This newly constructed facility includes classrooms, automotive bays, and a new paint booth, all with the latest state of the art technology.

Graduates will be

prepared for entry-level employment in the collision repair field in body shops, dealerships, and repair shops. The employment prospects for the collision repair field are strong. Demand for collision repair technicians is expected to increase by double-digit percentages over the next few years in both the region and the state.

CCCC, NCSU Partner for Transfer Program

Central Carolina Community College and NC State University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that promotes both associate degree and baccalaureate degree completion by giving guaranteed admission to NC State for CCCC students who meet the conditions of the program.

The NC State University Strategic Plan outlines an initiative to develop alternative pathways for admission to NC State through the North Carolina Community College System. Additionally, long-range enrollment goals include increased enrollments of transfer students, as well as increased enrollments of rural and low-tomoderate income students. The NC State Community College Collaboration (NC State C3) promotes achievement of these goals and initiatives by offering a transfer pathway for rural and low-to-moderate income students while promoting baccalaureate degree completion and fulfilling NC State’s land-grant mission for the citizens of North Carolina.

“Central Carolina Community College is thrilled to be partnering with N.C. State University on this initial offering of the NC State Community College Collaboration program,” said CCCC President Dr. T. Eston Marchant. “This program provides excellent advising and program support for low-to-moderate income students by combining the efforts and resources of CCCC and NC State and creating a more seamless transfer experience. The C3 program will be an outstanding attraction for our students who are considering NC

NC State and CCCC will work together to promote greater access to NC State through improved, collaborative advising.

CCCC students will be dually-enrolled at NC State and receive access to advising, financial aid, and other resources to facilitate a smooth transfer to the university.

CCCC students who are accepted into the program and meet the C3 criteria are guaranteed admission to NC State on the completion of their Associate in Science, Associate in Arts, or Associate in Engineering degrees.

NC State C3 is a dual-admission program between N.C. State and eight regional community college partners: Alamance Community College, Central Carolina Community College, Durham Technical Community College, Johnston Community College, Nash Community College, Vance-Granville Community

College, Wake Technical Community College, and Wilson Community College.

“On behalf of our students, we are delighted to partner with N.C. State in this new transfer initiative,” said Dr. Lora L. Witcher, CCCC Biology Instructor who is program liaison. “As a direct result of this program, CCCC students will have increased opportunities toward completion of their bachelor’s degree. While participating in the C3 program, students will benefit from academic and financial aid advising at both institutions, as well as having the prospect of getting to know NC State’s campus prior to making the transition. Students admitted into the NC State C3 Program and who are enrolled at Central Carolina Community College receive: • Up to 3 years from date of acceptance to the C3 program to complete the Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Engineering at Central Carolina Community College.

• Dual admission to NC State University as a Non-Degree Studies (NDS) student.

• Access to NC State services consistent with Non-Degree Studies enrollment (some services are fee-based and will be unavailable to C3 students).

• Access to academic advising by designated advisors at Central Carolina Community College and NC State to ensure students select courses to minimize their time to degree completion and optimize academic achievement.

• Access to the NC State degree planning

and degree audit tools.

• Access to financial aid advising and planning to aid students in maximizing their aid and minimizing student debt.

• Invitation to specialized C3 program events designed to aid students with their connections to NC State and their timely and successful completion of their associate and baccalaureate degrees.

Central Carolina Community College graduates with the Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Engineering degree who then matriculate to NC State receive: • Admission into an NC State undergraduate degree program upon completion of the AA, AS, or AE degree and continuous maintenance of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (Note: students are not guaranteed admission into a particular major, as high demand programs may be more competitive.).

• Eligibility for scholarships and financial aid, subject to financial aid eligibility.

• Invitation to specialized C3 program events designed to aid students with their transition to NC State and with their timely and successful completion of their baccalaureate degree.

ST. PAUL AME CHURCH is a bold example of red, brick and wood American Gothic Revival. The result of a long building campaign which began in 1884. The building was nearly complete in July 1901 when a fire gutted the structure.

Rebuilt within the walls, it was rededicated in 1910. Influenced by pattern books, it was built by Black skilled masons. The excellent execution is a reflection of traditional black involvement in the masonry trades in North Carolina and the Raleigh community.

This event was shared with many excited children and parents. Events included, oral stories, free food, dancing,

Heather Lineberry Sanford, NC Firefighter Heather Lineberry didn’t grow up wanting to be a firefighter. It was during college that she was dating a volunteer firefighter. She went on calls with him whenever they were together. One night they went to a house fire. While Heather sat in the car for hours watching she couldn’t help but think that she could be of some help as they didn’t have much help. after graduating college, she joined a volunteer fire department.

Heather had no intention of going into a burning building but as part of getting her certification she had to. That was all it took and Heather went from wanting to be a CPA to becoming a paid firefighter. After about 2 years she was hired with Sanford and has been there for almost 17 years now.

CCCC Recent Graduates Chosen for NCSU Goodnight Scholars

Two Central Carolina Community College recent graduates have been chosen for the Transfer Class of 2021 of the Goodnight Scholars Program at N.C. State University.

The two graduates, Frank Roth Ewens and Jaideep Ramani, are both from Lee County. They are among 15 recipients for the Transfer Class of 2021.

In making the announcement of their selection, the Goodnight Scholars Program released the following information for

each student: Frank Roth Ewens will graduate from Central Carolina Community College where he earned the Academic Excellence in Physical Science Award.

Frank was a member of both the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Math Club. He plans to major in aerospace engineering.

Jaideep Ramani will graduate from Central Carolina Community College where he was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Jaideep volunteered for BAPS Temple in Raleigh along with supporting clean-up efforts at Raven Rock State Park. In 2017, Jaideep was elected treasurer of the Math Club. He plans to major in computer science.

With that new-employee problem solved and a structure now in place to provide training easily and effectively, Conveyor Tech and CCCC dug even deeper. They also added employee training in several other areas — including electrical systems, forklift safety, leadership and team skills.

“We talked initially about the entry-level machine builders and what we needed to do to get a project in place, but then we talked about what else was needed given the growth they were going to have,” says Swindell. “We knew there were other things that would help them be productive, efficient and successful.

“So, we’re actually doing a larger project with other elements that will have a positive impact on the company.”

Innovation and Success

It has been an unqualified success.

Not only has training allowed new employees to start building machines with added confidence and skill, but it means Conveyor Tech’s more experienced machine builders can use their time better. Rather than teaching the most basic skills to new employees, they can serve as mentors and focus on creating the company’s intricate equipment.

“The partnership has been instrumental to our fast growth,” says Pilson. “It has helped us improve both quality and production schedules — which provides benefits internally, within the company,

and externally for our customers.”

It’s also been good for Swindell and the college. The project provided an opportunity to help one local company solve a real problem and, maybe even more importantly, demonstrate how partnerships between education and industry can pay real dividends when everyone brings their expertise to the table.

“We don’t want the community college to be seen as a last resort; we want it to be the first,” is how Swindell puts it. “When companies are looking for employees, developing the ones they have or training new ones coming in, they should think about the community college right away, because this is where workforce development happens.”

Apparently, others are believers, too.

Everything went so well at the Innovation Center that the Conveyor Tech project will be featured as an effective and innovative partnership during a presentation at MFGCON 18, the manufacturing innovation conference held each year in the Research Triangle. Pilson and Swindell will be sharing details and insights in September with industry leaders from across the state.

About The Goodnight Scholars Program (from N.C. State University) The Goodnight Scholars Program was established in 2008 out of the philanthropic generosity from North Carolina natives and NC State alumni Dr. Jim Goodnight, co-founder of global business analytic software leader, SAS Institute, and Mrs. Ann Goodnight, director of community relations at

SAS Institute.

The Goodnight Scholars Program targets North Carolina residents from low- and middle-income families who aspire to study in a science, technology, engineering, mathematics or STEM education discipline at NC State. The value of the scholarship is $20,000

and is renewable for up to four years for first-year students ($80,000 total), and three years for transfer students ($60,000 total). In addition to the scholarship, Goodnight Scholars have access to an assortment of developmental programming focused on their professional and personal growth.
