And who wouldn’t be tempted to share those juicy tidbits? Well, if you want to be successful, the wisest action would be to forget you ever heard them, and never repeat one syllable of those confessions. But we live in an imperfect world where gossip is often the only form of conversation that some people can seem to conduct.

Gossip has replaced news in many media. It’s big business. Outlets like TMZ and celebrity gossip programs get huge ratings. Social media has made the truth a rare commodity, as people can share harmful gossip and rumors in an instant from anywhere in the world.

And the truth gets lost in the whirlwind.

The gossip business may be red hot, but office gossip is mostly bad for businesses. The workplace should be a no-gossip zone. But when it is not, consequences include lost productivity and wasted time, erosion of trust and morale, damaged reputations, dissension among employees and even the loss of good employees who leave companies due to unhealthy work environments.

Gossip and rumors have been part of the workplace culture since ancient Egypt. Although a certain amount of personal chitchat goes on in any workplace, gossiping employees can erode trust among co-workers and infect a team with hostility.

Before rumors gain a foothold in your organization, take some proactive steps.

Make sure your general company communications are efficient and as complete as possible. Employees will believe rumors if they don’t have access to facts. Even in tough times, give your Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Skunks

We’ve all smelled them and some of us have met them p e r s o n a l l y.

Skunks are actually quite abundant in our area, but their population has declined, when compared to the good old days. Some of the population reduction is due to humans, but I believe disease has had a direct effect too. Rabies occurs in skunks, however raccoons are actually a greater carrier of the disease.

My Dad hunted and trapped enough skunks to buy my Mother a diamond engagement ring. I have never skinned a skunk nor been an observer of the

process. I imagine the stink must be very excessive, however my Dad said if you positioned yourself upwind it was tolerable.

Other than observing skunks traveling through the farm-yard at night, I didn’t experience close contact with a skunk until I was about 9 years old.

I had been trapping fox for bounty payments and had just purchased a new jump trap. I was so very proud of it and knew that it would really make me the most successful trapper.

After setting the trap, I went to check it the next morning. My trap had a skunk by the front leg. My mind sorted out my options. If I shot and killed the skunk, I would either have to leave the skunk and my trap for more than a week so the stink would be reduced or remove the freshly killed skunk from the trap. I didn’t like those

people as much information as you can so they can rely on solid data, not halftruths. If you can’t share news, explain why, so you don’t appear to be hiding anything.

Always confront rumors directly.

If you catch wind of an untrue rumor, address it promptly. Go to the source and set him or her straight, explaining the damage that false information can cause. Clear up any confusion with your entire workforce right away. They may think twice about spreading or believing rumors if they know you’re ready to step in.

Set the right example. Don’t listen to gossip that comes your way.

Either correct any misinformation immediately, or explain that you’re not interested in rumors. Don’t pass along any unsubstantiated stories yourself.

Let the gossip stop with you. If people persist in spreading rumors, suggest that they need more work to do.

Sometimes the harm that gossip inflicts is irrevocable. It is critical to nip it in the bud.

Perhaps you are familiar with this Hasidic folktale: A man went for months slandering the rabbi of his village. When the High Holy Days approached, the man realized the enormous evil he had committed and, overcome with remorse, sought out the rabbi and begged for forgiveness.

The rabbi told the man he would forgive him on one condition: that he go back to his house, cut up a feather pillow, scatter the feathers to the wind and then return. The man raced home, followed the rabbi’s instructions and returned to the rabbi’s residence.

“Am I forgiven now?” he asked.

options, so I decided to shoot the front leg off and the skunk should run away.

After several shots with the 22 rifle, the skunk was freed from the trap without it’s leg. It made a couple of steps and turned up it’s tail and gave me a blast. I then learned that a skunk doesn’t spray, it squirts. When I got home, I had to take my clothes off outside of the house and even after a hot soapy bath, I still smelled for a few days. Tomato juice wasn’t tried, since one didn’t waste good food.

Other than finding skunks hiding in oat shocks, my next close encounter with a skunk was a couple of years later.

I liked to sit at the edge of a hay field in the evening waiting for a fox to travel across the field. It was one of those perfect sunny summer evenings and the mosquitoes weren’t even pestering me. I noticed a movement off to my right and slowly turned my head to see a mother skunk and more than a half a dozen cute little babies.

I decided to stay perfectly still and see what would happen. The skunk family was totally involved in catching grasshoppers for their evening meal.

The mother noticed me form about 20 feet away and she felt that she should check me out. Of course the little ones followed her. After looking me over for a couple of minutes, she decided to see what I smelled like. She smelled my shoes and pant legs and like curious youngsters, the little ones tried to climb over my shoes. After about 5 minutes the mother decided that getting the kids fed was more important than checking me out and they moved along the edge of the field. There was a very slight

odor, but certainly not offensive. This experience made me think of skunks in a more positive way.

In later years we built a house in a territory that was evidently claimed by a very large skunk. We saw him at the edge of the yard, but he seemed to stay away from the house. One evening he went under the porch. Our dog felt that the skunk was invading his territory and began to try to get him to leave with very loud and excited barking.

The skunk tolerated the noise for a few minutes, but when we heard the skunk thumping his feet on the ground, we knew the crisis was about to end. The skunk let loose a blast that got the dog and the porch. The dog backed off, but he and the porch still smelled for weeks, whenever humidity was high.

A month later, I was sitting on a folding chair in front of the house cutting up green beans. The dog was laying about 10 feet to my left and our cat was about 10 feet to my right. The skunk walked out of the field in front of the house, walked up about 8 feet from me, looked at me, then the dog and then walked past the cat and left the yard.

I guess we had all gained respect for each other.

My time spent close to nature certainly created an appreciation of my surroundings.

Clara K. Rahn, age 76 of Melrose, died peacefully on Friday, September 23, 2016 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, September 29, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery following the service.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Clara Katherine Brake was born March 24, 1940 in Ward Springs, Minnesota to Frank and Caroline (Feldewerd) Brake. On May 11, 1960 she married Herman Rahn in Ward Springs. The couple farmed near Ward Springs for 25 years before moving to Meire Grove and then to Melrose. Clara was a nursing assistant at Pine Villa for about ten years. She enjoyed crocheting,

Survivors include her children, Don (Danelle) Rahn of Kensington, Betty (Trinidad) Ambriz-Morelos of Melrose, Marvin (Vicky) Rahn of Browerville, and Richard (Yvonne) Rahn of Melrose; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Laura (Ray) Zenzen of Melrose, Eleanor (Michael) Froelich of Albany, and Sr. Helen Brake, OSF of Little Falls; and sisters-in-law, Helen Brake of Ward Springs and Barb Brake of Minneapolis.

Clara was preceded in death by her husband, Herman on April 28, 1994; her parents, Frank and Caroline; brothers and sisters, Marie (August) Schmidt, Irene (Louis) Parish, Bernard Brake, Henry Brake, John Brake, and infant Lawrence.

Serving as casket bearers will be Jeffrey Rahn, Josh Rahn, Bob Bearson, Justin Ettel, Larry Brake, and Kurt Zenzen. Cross bearers will be Brian Rahn and Richard Jr. Rahn. Scripture bearer will be Maryann Monroe.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Gregory Miller, OSB will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9AM until the time of services Thursday at the church in Avon.

Jean was born on May 5, 1922 to Valentine and Frances Jarnot in Holdingford, MN. She married Norbert Waletzko on September 1, 1945. Jean was employed at the Avon Post Office as the Postmaster and also St. John’s University.

She enjoyed quilting, playing cards, camping, fishing and spending time with her family.

Jean is survived by her children, Dale (Ace) and Katie Waletzko and Diane (Muggs) and Tom Torgerson.

She was also blessed with 7 grandchildren, Rob, Sara, Patrick, Becky, Kari, Andy, Jeffrey; and 8 greatgrandchildren; 2 sisters, Violet Meagher and Marlene Gill.

Marie M. Primus, age 91 of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 26, 2016 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 30 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Vincent Lieser concelebrating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Meire Grove. The Christian Mothers and Saints Bernard and Elizabeth Council will pray at 6 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Marie Margareth Hinnenkamp was born June 29, 1925 in Melrose, Minnesota to Henry and Agnes (Pohlman) Hinnenkamp. She was united in marriage to Albert Primus on June 2, 1948 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose.

The couple farmed southwest of Melrose and retired in 1991. Marie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and volunteered there for many years. She took care of the flowers at church, acted as a greeter and served for many funerals.

Marie was also a member of the Christian Mothers and Saints Bernard and Elizabeth Council.

grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, scrapbooking, rug braiding, and doing miscellaneous crafts.

Survivors include her children, Anthony (Lynette) Primus of Alexandria, Agnes Bauer of Elrosa, Ray (Rosemary) Primus of Melrose, Monica (Ron) Magnuson of Seaside, Oregon, Martin (Georgiann) Primus of Sauk Centre, Francis (Judy) Primus of Melrose, Theresa Madel of Murphysboro, Illinois, Ruth (John) Eliason of Greenfield, and Paul (Amy) Primus of Melrose; 37 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Primus on August 16, 2002; parents, Henry and Agnes; grandchildren, Brian Primus and Christina Madel; brothers and sisters, Leo Hinnenkamp, Elsie Hellermann, Norbert Hinnenkamp, Boniface Hinnenkamp, and Loretta Mehr; and sons-in-law, Joe Madel and David Bauer.

Serving as casket bearers will be Chad Bauer, Chad Primus, Josh Primus, Joey Madel, Charlie Madel, Andrew Primus, Isaiah Primus, Ian Eliason, and Nathan Primus. Cross bearer will be Stacie Harvala and scripture bearer will be Eli Harvala. Serving as Eucharistic Ministers will be Amanda Primus and Theresa Madel.

Vi was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her grandsons, Paul Nett of Albany, Mick Nett of Avon, and David (Gail) Nett of Sartell; and great-grandchildren, Marcus and Brooke Nett.

Vi was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Berns on October 23, 1982; parents; daughter, Sharon Nett; brothers, Ernest, Warren, and Bernard Winter; and sister, Virginia Fluegel.

J e a n n e Clarise (Bitz) Wilber, age 57 of Melrose, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

Jeanne was born December 29, 1958 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Milton and Lorene (Berscheid) Bitz. Jeanne was passionate about family. When she wasn’t taking photos of her grandchildren, she likely could be found giving them cuddles, hugs, kisses, or spoiling them with whatever new toy she could find.

Jeanne was awed by the beauty in nature and shared photos with both friends and family. She also enjoyed sharing her talents by volunteering for the local history museum and their Facebook page.

Survivors include her son, Shalon (Kate) Wilber of Fargo, North Dakota; grandchildren; Jay and Adelane (Laney) Wilber; brothers and sisters; Carole Austing (Don Weissman), Darlene

(Albin) Moritz, David (Lorraine) Bitz, Stephen (Lavonne) Bitz, Kevin (Nancy) Bitz, Mary Kay Rhode, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents; Lorene and Milton Bitz, brotherin- law; Erv Austing, and nephew; Spencer Milton Austing.

Swanville Sr. High Student of the Month Sophie Larson, daughter of David and Susan, is September’s Senior High Student of the Month.

Sophie is this year’s student body president and has been on student council since eighth grade.

Sophie is a valuable member of the basketball and volleyball teams and played softball for four years. Off the court, Sophie acts in our school plays, plays in the band, was part of Healthy Communities Collaborative, and is a member of the Honor Society. Sophie was nominated for the ExCel award and has lettered in theatre and every sport.

Outside of school, Sophie spends time with her cousins, plays sports with her friends, and plays cards with her grandmas. She volunteers at local libraries and at school blood drives. She is a member of the Culdrum Comets 4H Club through which she has taken a sheep to the State Fair six years in a row.

Sophie advises other students to “try your best now so you don’t regret it later.” She plans to attend college and pursue a career in the medical field.

This is Jackson’s first year on Student Council, but he has played football, basketball, and baseball since he was in seventh grade.

Fall Harvest Farm Safety

By Brenda Miller, University of Minnesota Extension-Todd County Now that harvest season is upon us, it is important to remind ourselves to be safe when operating equipment. Accidents can happen in less than a blink of an eye and can have devastating outcomes. Here are 10 things to keep in mind as you go through this harvest season.

1. Do not expose children to hazards. Teach them farm safety at a young age. Children watch everything you do.

If you put yourself in a potentially hazardous situation then they will think it is OK, mimic you and bad things will happen. Explain to a child the importance of why and how they should or should not act around machinery or other farm hazards. If you teach them right when they’re young, it will stick with them for the rest of their lives.

2. One seat, one rider. If a piece of equipment only has one seat, the driver’s seat, then the driver should be the only one on that piece of machinery.

The only exception to this rule is if a tractor or combine has a buddy seat that is meant for an additional rider. Children love to go for rides but be strict and say no if there is only one seat. Tough love keeps your kids safe.

3. Always tell someone where you are going. If you are going to go disk “the back 40” then let someone know where you will be, should something happen or just to check in to make sure you’re OK. If you move to a different field, update them on your status. Cell phones and 2 way radios are fabulous communication tools.

4. Don’t take “shortcuts.” They will come back to haunt you. Jumping across a moving PTO or trying to unclog the chopper while it is running are probably not the best ideas if you’d like to keep your limbs. Take the extra few seconds to shut off moving parts or engines.

5. Be aware of your surroundings.

Know where children or workers are before moving machinery. Know where

field approaches, tile inlets, trees, barns, sheds, vehicles, drainage ditches, and buffer strips are located and make sure your help knows too. Having to replace machinery parts or fix tile inlets are never a cheap or fun task. Also, don’t text and drive!

6. Eat. Drink. Sleep. Fatigue will sneak up on you and pretty soon you’ll be sleeping behind the wheel. Take a 20 minute nap when the sleep monsters start crawling all over you. Keep a jug of water with you in the tractor to stay hydrated and wash your hands if needed. Have someone bring you lunch or supper and keep a few healthy snacks (apples, granola bars, etc.) on hand to boost your energy. And, just get out of the tractor once in a while to get a breath of fresh air!

7. Don’t wear loose clothing or strings. Too often you hear about a farmer getting caught in an auger or PTO because their sweatshirt strings got too close or their pant legs got caught in the gears. Take the sweatshirt or jacket off or remove hood strings before working in these conditions. Cut the fringes off pants and repair holes to reduce chances.

8. Shut off PTO & engine before working on moving parts. ‘Nuff said if you want to keep your fingers, arms, legs, and other important body parts.

9. Use your lights and flashers.

Many road drivers don’t heed to farm machinery as they should so be proactive and make sure they can at least see your lights. If you have machinery that has poor or no lights, only move it on roads during daylight hours and have someone follow behind you in a vehicle with their flashers on.

10. Wear a dust mask & do not enter grain handling facilities that are being loaded or unloaded. Every year we hear about farmers getting trapped in grain bins. This is a big no, no. Grain is not safe to walk across, especially when it is in a bin and twenty feet deep.

If you absolutely have to enter a grain bin, wear a safety harness and have another person or two nearby should the situation go bad. Also, grain gets dusty sometimes, wear protection, your lungs and airways will thank you.

You told me you’re married, yet it sounds to me like you two are living entirely different and separate lives. This seems more like a roommate situation than a healthy, loving marriage.

Your house is definitely an asset; it’s the mortgage that’s a liability. Some folks may try to position a house as a liability simply because it costs you money. But the truth is your home will make you more money than it will cost you over time. Therefore, it is an asset.

Some of the saddest situations I’ve seen in all my years of teaching are seniors who have paid-for homes and nothing saved or invested. Money isn’t the most important thing on earth, but it is a fact of life. That’s why I encourage people to build an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses and begin saving for retirement before they tackle paying off their homes.

Then, after all that is addressed, take every dollar you can scrape together and put it toward paying off your mortgage as fast as possible. Good question, Mark!

LBLL East Smart Program - A Prescription for Healthy Living

Stop by the SPROUT Food Hub located just off Haven Road in Little Falls Wednesday afternoons and you’ll see a variety of activity happening in efforts to connect area residents with local, healthy food.

Currently there are 48 individuals (approximately 186 total family members) participating in the Eat Smart program. They visit SPROUT twice a month to pick up “community supported agriculture” (CSA) shares ,which include items such as: kale, romaine lettuce, herbs, fresh eggs, cucumbers, melons, radishes, green beans, heirloom tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, varieties of squash, honey and wild rice. The Live Better Live Longer (LBLL) Eat Smart program is a prescription for fresh vegetables and other healthy foods referred by area health care providers.

One component of the Eat Smart program includes cooking demonstrations and classes held on-site when par-

ticipants stop to pick up CSA shares at SPROUT. “Part of the funding we received from Catholic Health Initiatives, through a Mission & Ministry grant, went towards the purchase of equipment for a community demonstration kitchen at the SPROUT facility” states Kate Bjorge, director of Live Better Live Longer (LBLL), a community outreach program of CHI St. Gabriel’s Health.

“We believe it’s critical to the success of the program to be able to immediately demonstrate how to prepare the food items they receive. Otherwise, what’s the use of giving a family a share of kale – which is so full of health benefits – without providing options for how to make it taste good?”

Eat Smart program participants receive some equipment, spices and pantry items to assist them as they prepare food at home. Additionally, they receive a binder full of nutrition information and

Todd County Sheriff’s Dept.

September 21, 2016: At 6:32 Sheriff Don Asmus and Long Prairie Police Chief Kevin Langer and officers from their departments, along with agents from the Central MN Violent Offender Task Force executed a search warrant at 311 3rd Ave. SW in the City of Long Prairie.

Arrested was Brian Lee Hall (age 36) DOB/11-28-1980. Hall had 3 outstanding warrants for his arrest from Anoka and Mahnomen Counties in MN and another warrant from Detroit Lakes Police Department.

Hall is also being held at the Todd County Detention Center awaiting for formal charges for sale and possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine). And also giving false name to police officers. The investigation is ongoing and other arrests are expected.

Sauk Centre Police and the MN State Patrol also assisted at the scene.

September 22, 2016: At 6:48 the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a one vehicle rollover crash at the intersection of County Rd 59 and 271st Ave. Robert Miron of Long Prairie, lost control of the vehicle causing it to enter the ditch and roll. No injuries were reported and the vehicle sustained moderate damage.

September 23, 2016: At 13:15 TCSO received a call of a theft that occurred at an address on 165th Ave south of County 38 in Leslie TWP sect 12. 73 year old Meryl Wegner reports that between the dates of September 21st at 1800 hours and Saturday September 24th at 1800 hours, suspect(s) entered his property and took an aluminum utility trailer. Suspects also forced entry onto a shed on the property.

It is unknown if anything was taken from the shed at the time of the report. The incident is currently under investigation. If you have information regarding this theft, please call the TCSO at 1-800-794-5733.

September 24, 2016: At 10:56 Timothy Greene reported the theft of a 12 foot Fiesta Camper, 2013 Baja mini bike, and a Moultrie trail camera from his residence at 27770 335th Avenue.
